Entry timing is critical for a firm's sustainability, and it is determined after comparing the first mover advantage (FMA) and the late mover advantage (LMA). This study aims to continue the extant discussion on FMA and LMA to explore the important determinants and their effects on FMA or LMA in a smartphone market. The methodology of building a theory from a comparative case study is adopted using Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy cases in a smartphone market. This study verified that market- and firm-level determinants are more linked with FMA, and the isolating mechanism along with the environment as well as firm-level enablers are useful for explaining FMA. This study also uniquely found that the product-level determinant is closely linked with LMA, which has not been explored much in relation to LMA. This study theoretically contributed to extending the conceptual framework as well as enabling the mechanism of entry advantage, and it has managerial implications of how the first mover or the late mover can benefit from their entry advantage by exploiting their relative strength. With 86% of Generation Y South Africans found to have a Samsung phone, we examined 1) whether they love and are satisfied with the brand, 2) how much the consumption value theory (monetary, functional and symbolic values) explains brand love and satisfaction, 3) the relationship between brand satisfaction and love. We surveyed 651 respondents from two large universities. Results revealed that Generation Y South Africans moderately love and are adequately satisfied with the Samsung phone brand. Structural equation modeling results showed that the three consumption values and brand satisfaction positively influenced brand love. The Choi Soon-sil scandal, which led to the arrest of the de facto leader of Samsung Group Lee Jae-yong and the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye, exposed the ugly features of state capture in South Korea. Although the 1997–1998 financial crisis highlighted the problems of crony capitalism, it has been widely recognized that South Korea overcame the crisis by implementing far-reaching reforms of the chaebol's corporate governance. This article explores why the post-crisis reform failed to end the practices of crony capitalism and why global companies like Samsung engaged in such corruption through a historical case study of Samsung Group. It highlights how increasing inequality and chaebol concentration have produced both popular pressures for institutional reform and incentives for chaebol to capture the policy-making process in the context of the changing state–business–civil society relations in the democratic post-developmental state era. I find that while the main objective of the chaebol's bribery and lobbying of the government before the financial crisis was business expansion through the acquisition of low-interest loans and other government favors, it has changed to weakening or circumventing government regulations on corporate governance in order to achieve easier and cheaper dynastic successions of corporate control. This study explored a comparative analysis of how the South Korean and United States media framed the Samsung–Apple patent lawsuit. The South Korean and U.S. media have a tendency to report Samsung–Apple patent disputes in a completely different angle. While framing in favor of Samsung was frequent in South Korea, neutral frames were dominant in the United States. The South Korean newspapers showed a stronger nationalism in favor of Samsung, whereas the U.S. newspapers portrayed the business conflict in the market logic. The South Korean and U.S. newspapers also showed differences in framing according to the ideological characteristics of the newspaper. In South Korea, the main conservative newspaper (Chosun Ilbo) framed the issue in favor of Samsung and the largest liberal newspaper (Hankyoreh) revealed a tendency to frame it in favor of Apple. However, in the United States, only the main business newspaper (Wall Street Journal) favored Apple. This study contributes to news framing research in that socio-cultural divergences, framing pool (e.g., generic frames vs. issue-specific frames), and journalistic contexts considered systematically. Emotions are part of the brands communication. The models provided to explain the influence process are often focused on cognitive processing, leaving the affective process aside. The present paper identifies the elements that are activated in the consumer mind while attending brand communication and how this process supports the creation of powerful brands. The study focus on the emotional evaluation of the Apple brand compare to Samsung brand. The three-factor model proposed by Thomson, MacInnis, y Park (2005) is used to measure the affect, passion and brand connection. The results show that the scale adaption to the Spanish sample achieves good psychometrics properties when applied to the selected brands. This article addresses the issue of corporate social responsibility, including the development of new concepts of CSR. Within the theoretical framework of the CSR, I have analyzed the specific cases of Samsung's CSR in Colombia, in order to reflect on the change of the policy guidelines and the characteristic elements of its csr, as well as its impacts in society. Consequently, these new strategies of companies become indispensable factors for companies to achieve sustainable development and maintain their competitiveness at a global level. This article is designed to broaden the understanding of South Korean newspapers' journalistic practices. It examines the editorial approaches of two contrasting sets of newspapers towards corruption accusations and judicial proceedings against a leading corporation, Samsung. Through an analysis of the degree to which the ideological leanings and economic interests of the newspapers are reflected in their editorials on this issue, it shows that the journalistic practices of South Korean newspapers have been mixed. In addressing to what extent the financial viability of newspapers influences their news reporting, this article shows that there is a complex interplay of ideological inclination and economic interests in their reporting on economic corruption. It argues that the watchdog role performed by the newspapers, conservative newspapers in particular, in relation to the powerful economic and corporate actors represented by business conglomerates, has to a large extent been subordinated to the papers' organizational and economic interests. Background: With the widespread ownership of smartphones, many health care professionals question the degree to which medically related smartphone applications are reliable. Objectives: To assess the variety of smartphone applications relating to paediatric radiology and the presence of health care professional involvement in their development. As a secondary objective, we explore whether there are gaps within the paediatric radiology app market. Materials and methods: The most popular smartphone marketplaces (Apple iTunes App Store, Blackberry Mobile Market, Google Play Android Market, Nokia Ovi, Samsung and Microsoft Windows Marketplace) were searched for terms relating to paediatric radiology. Cost, review ratings, number of downloads, health care involvement and target audience were recorded. Results: Nine paediatric radiology applications were found in the Apple iTunes App Store and nine in the Google Play Android Market. The target audiences for all applications were health care professionals. None were available for patients or their caregivers. All applications were reported to have medical expertise in their development. Conclusion: All paediatric radiology applications were developed with the aid of a health care professional. The role of e-books in Korea has been a puzzle for the rest of the world due to its late acceptance and development in a country that has such a highly developed and wide ranging computer based technologies. The article provides a twenty-year history with a focus on the past 3 years of the emergence of the e-book and related smart phones as prime platforms and then the related development of content. Path dependence attempts to clarify the continuous survival of some technology firms in cross industries amid the failure of others under radical circumstances. Controversially, related studies suggest both findings that path dependence works positively and negatively on a firm's survival. In this paper, we present the disadvantages from the negative views, or those that restrict technology firms within one's business, and instead suggest expansion to cross businesses. This study aims to investigate the survival of some technology firms and their means to regain their dominant position, by analyzing the case of Samsung. Results show that Samsung, while facing radical change, successfully established a new strategic business. Our contributions confirm the positive views on path dependence. We also suggest three factors that contribute to the survival of the incumbent facing radical changes: dynamic technological capability, top management capability, and internal selection process. This paper examines Samsung Electronics' catch-up with Sony in terms of technological capabilities and investigates the various aspects of the change in the two firms' technological characteristics in the course of the catch-up. Using the US patents of the two firms as a basis, this paper finds that in terms of the quantity of patents, Samsung Electronics' catch-up with Sony happened around the mid-1990s, and in terms of the quality of patents, Samsung Electronics' catch-up occurred earlier, at the beginning of the 1990s. In addition, Samsung Electronics has come to be more independent from Sony, proving that Samsung Electronics has gone beyond simply imitating and applying Sony's technology. This paper also analyzes the other aspects of catch-up, namely the generality and the originality of the knowledge base, technology cycle and appropriability. Samsung Electronics caught up with Sony in terms of sales, corporate value and brand value only after the 2000s. Our study shows that technological catch-up precedes the catch-up in other dimensions.
