Rising temperatures due to global warming necessitate immediate evaluation of heatwave patterns in Peninsular Malaysia (PM). For this purpose, this study utilized a locally developed heatwave index and a gridded daily maximum temperature (Tmax) dataset from ERA5 (1950–2022). During validation, the ERA5 dataset accurately represented the spatial pattern of Level 1 heatwaves, showing widespread occurrence. Historically, Level 1 heatwaves prevailed at 63.0%, followed by Level 2 at 27.7%, concentrated in northwestern states and the enclave between the Tahan and Titiwangsa mountain ranges. During very strong El Niño events in 1982/83, 1997/98, and 2015/16, Level 2 heatwave distributions were 10.4%, 26.8%, and 15.0%, respectively. For future projection, the model ensemble was created by selecting top-performing Global Climate Models (GCMs) using Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE), ranked re-aggregation with compromise programming index (CPI), and GCM subset selection via Fisher-Jenks. The linear scaling bias-corrected GCMs (BC-GCMs), NorESM2-LM, ACCESS-CM2, MPI-ESM1-2-LR, ACCESS-ESM1-5, and FGOALS-g3, were found to exhibit better performance, and then ensemble. March to May show the highest increase in all scenarios, ranging from 3.3 °C to 4.4 °C for Level 1 heatwaves and 4.1 °C to 10.7 °C for Level 2 heatwaves. In the near future, SSP5-8.5 projects up to a 40.5% spatial increase for Level 1 heatwaves and a 2.3% increase for Level 2 heatwaves, affecting 97.1% and 57.2% of the area, respectively. In the far future, under SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5, Tmax is projected to rise rapidly (1.5–4.5 °C) in the northern, western, and central regions, with increasing population exposure anticipated in the northern and western regions. The Northeast monsoon (NEM) exerts a significant influence on the climate system of Peninsular Malaysia (PM) and has profound implications for water resource management, flood control, and disaster preparedness in the region. This study employed CHIRPS rainfall data from 1981 to 2022 at a spatial resolution of 0.25° to generate climate zones. The performance of global climate models (GCMs) in replicating monthly rainfall was evaluated using multiple statistical metrics, with the top-ranked ones being used for the generation of future projection downscaled ensemble models. The NEM months (November, December, January, February, and March) were used as input parameters to form clustered homogeneous groups using the Ward hierarchical method. The optimal number of climate zones was determined using the elbow method, silhouette width values, and spatial evaluation. Ultimately, a 7-cluster solution was chosen due to its consistency and meaningful cluster formation. The zones were categorized into two regions: the West Coast and the East Coast, based on their geographical location and distinctive monthly NEM rainfall patterns. The analysis of the probability distribution function (PDF) showed that rainfall in the West Coast region had a more spread-out pattern with varying amounts, while rainfall in the East Coast region was more concentrated and consistent. The Northeast climate zone received the highest rainfall, attributed to its proximity to the South China Sea, mountainous areas, and the NEM convergence zone. In contrast, the Northwest and Lower Central-West climate zones received the lowest rainfall due to the rain shadow effect, limited moisture availability, and distance from major moisture sources. The CMCC-ESM2, CMCC-CM2-SR5, EC-Earth3, and CanESM5 consistently ranked among the highest performing models. After linear scaling bias correction, validated GCMs showed significant improvements, with improvements in MAE, NRMSE, PBIAS, RSR, NSE, MD, CP, R2, and KGE by 11–45%, 15–47%, 96–100%, 15–47%, 10–79%, 5–37%, 68–113%, 11–73%, and 9–51%, respectively. Analysis of NEM season rainfall patterns across climate zones indicated consistent mid-future increases for the Northwest and Lower Central-West zones (12.4–19.8%) and the Upper Central-West and Southwest zones (0.2–5.4%) across all scenarios. In the far-future, the Southeast zone saw an overall increase in rainfall (4.9–11.4%), while the Central-West zone exhibited mixed results (−4.0 to 5.6%). Climate change has significantly altered the characteristics of climate zones, posing considerable challenges to ecosystems and biodiversity, particularly in Borneo, known for its high species density per unit area. This study aimed to classify the region into homogeneous climate groups based on long-term average behavior. The most effective parameters from the high-resolution daily gridded Princeton climate datasets spanning 65 years (1950–2014) were utilized, including rainfall, relative humidity (RH), temperatures (Tavg, Tmin, Tmax, and diurnal temperature range (DTR)), along with elevation data at 0.25° resolution. The FCM clustering method outperformed K-Mean and two Ward's hierarchical methods (WardD and WardD2) in classifying Borneo's climate zones based on multi-criteria assessment, exhibiting the lowest average distance (2.172–2.180) and the highest compromise programming index (CPI)-based correlation ranking among cluster averages across all climate parameters. Borneo's climate zones were categorized into four: 'Wet and cold' (WC) and 'Wet' (W) representing wetter zones, and 'Wet and hot' (WH) and 'Dry and hot' (DH) representing hotter zones, each with clearly defined boundaries. For future projection, EC-Earth3-Veg ranked first for all climate parameters across 961 grid points, emerging as the top-performing model. The linear scaling (LS) bias-corrected EC-Earth3-Veg model, as shown in the Taylor diagram, closely replicated the observed datasets, facilitating future climate zone reclassification. Improved performance across parameters was evident based on MAE (35.8–94.6%), MSE (57.0–99.5%), NRMSE (42.7–92.1%), PBIAS (100–108%), MD (23.0–85.3%), KGE (21.1–78.1%), and VE (5.1–9.1%), with closer replication of empirical probability distribution function (PDF) curves during the validation period. In the future, Borneo's climate zones will shift notably, with WC elongating southward along the mountainous spine, W forming an enclave over the north-central mountains, WH shifting northward and shrinking inland, and DH expanding northward along the western coast. Under SSP5-8.5, WC is expected to expand by 39% and 11% for the mid- and far-future periods, respectively, while W is set to shrink by 46%. WH is projected to expand by 2% and 8% for the mid- and far-future periods, respectively. Conversely, DH is expected to expand by 43% for the far-future period but shrink by 42% for the mid-future period. This study fills a gap by redefining Borneo's climate zones based on an increased number of effective parameters and projecting future shifts, utilizing advanced clustering methods (FCM) under CMIP6 scenarios. Importantly, it contributes by ranking GCMs using RIMs and CPI across multiple climate parameters, addressing a previous gap in GCM assessment. Although Borneo Island is one of the most vulnerable tropical regions to climate change, maps depicting the local climate conditions employing climate classification are still not well defined. The present study attempted regional climate classification to divide the Borneo region into several homogenous groups based on long-term average climate behavior. Daily gridded rainfall and temperature (Tavg, Tmax, and Tmin) data at 0.25° resolution spanning 56 years (1960–2016) was used. The classification was done using non-hierarchical k-mean and several hierarchical methods, namely, Single, Complete, McQuitty, Average, Centroid, Median, and two algorithms of Ward's method, wardD, and wardD2. The results showed that k-mean, wardD, and wardD2 were able to classify the climate of Borneo into four zones, namely 'dry and hot' (DH), 'wet and hot' (WH), 'wet' (W), and 'wet and cold' (WC) with a considerable difference at the boundaries. Spatial relevancy, stability, and variability of the clusters based on correlation and compromise programming showed that the wardD method was the most likely to yield acceptable results with optimum 4-cluster to partition the area into four principal climate zones. The constructed cluster plot, centroid plot, and probability distribution function (PDF) showed a distinct climatic characteristic between the climate zones in terms of rainfall, temperature, and seasonality. It is crucial to carry out a spatiotemporal evaluation of rainfall concentration in the Johor river basin (JRB) given that erratic rainfall can lead to floods. The study utilized the CHIRPS rainfall dataset from 1983 to 2018 to determine rainfall concentration using the Concentration Index (CI). To further define the rainfall regime, the Seasonality Index (SI) and Precipitation Concentration Index (PCI) were examined. The Mann-Kendall (MK) test was utilized to examine the trend at a 95% level of significance. The results showed the better accuracy of SI than PCI in classifying the rainfall regime in the JRB, defined as "equable but with a definite wetter season" type. The CI values ranged from 0.61 to 0.72 and were typically high all over the basin, with the northwestern and western regions having the highest values. At 27 grid points on the eastern border of the upper and middle parts of the basin, CI has significantly increased as a result of an upsurge in rainfall concentration brought on by climate change. This study assesses the possible changes in rainfall patterns of Sarawak in Borneo Island due to climate change through statistical downscaling of General Circulation Models (GCM) projections. Available in-situ observed rainfall data were used to downscale the future rainfall from ensembles of 20 GCMs of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) for four Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) scenarios, namely, RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0 and RCP8.5. Model Output Statistics (MOS) based downscaling models were developed using two data mining approaches known as Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). The SVM was found to downscale all GCMs with normalized mean square error (NMSE) of 48.2–75.2 and skill score (SS) of 0.94–0.98 during validation. The results show that the future projection of the annual rainfalls is increasing and decreasing on the region-based and catchment-based basis due to the influence of the monsoon season affecting the coast of Sarawak. The ensemble mean of GCMs projections reveals the increased and decreased mean of annual precipitations at 33 stations with the rate of 0.1% to 19.6% and one station with the rate of − 7.9% to − 3.1%, respectively under all RCP scenarios. The remaining 15 stations showed inconsistency neither increasing nor decreasing at the rate of − 5.6% to 5.2%, but mainly showing a trend of decreasing rainfall during the first period (2010–2039) followed by increasing rainfall for the period of 2070–2099. The main determinants of climate change, forest dynamics, land alteration, heat stress, ecological disturbances, and urban expansion. Addressing challenges posed by increasing anthropogenic activities due to population growth and rapid urbanization requires implementing appropriate solutions and fostering greater awareness, leading to improved, healthier livelihoods. Significant changes in urban expansion have occurred in the central and south Changde and the north, south, northwest, and central Chongqing. Significant urban expansion is observed, with a notable increase of 703.19 km2 in built-up land (Chongqing) and 93.88 km2 (Changde). Cropland has decreased by 103.36 km2 in Changde due to urban expansion, while Chongqing has seen an increase of 395.45 km2 in cropland. Notably, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values have undergone considerable changes, The average normalized difference built-up index (NDBI) increased by an average of 0.07 between 2017 and 2021, going from 0.85 in 2017 to 0.79 in 2021. Average temperatures increased by 0.45 °C in Chongqing and 0.51 °C in Changde, with noticeable effects on urban thermal features and UHIs. One of the direct and unavoidable consequences of global warming-induced rising temperatures is the more recurrent and severe heatwaves. In recent years, even countries like Malaysia seldom had some mild to severe heatwaves. As the Earth's average temperature continues to rise, heatwaves in Malaysia will undoubtedly worsen in the future. It is crucial to characterize and monitor heat events across time to effectively prepare for and implement preventative actions to lessen heatwave's social and economic effects. This study proposes heatwave-related indices that take into account both daily maximum (Tmax) and daily lowest (Tmin) temperatures to evaluate shifts in heatwave features in Peninsular Malaysia (PM). Daily ERA5 temperature dataset with a geographical resolution of 0.25° for the period 1950–2022 was used to analyze the changes in the frequency and severity of heat waves across PM, while the LandScan gridded population data from 2000 to 2020 was used to calculate the affected population to the heatwaves. This study also utilized Sen's slope for trend analysis of heatwave characteristics, which separates multi-decadal oscillatory fluctuations from secular trends. The findings demonstrated that the geographical pattern of heatwaves in PM could be reconstructed if daily Tmax is more than the 95th percentile for 3 or more days. The data indicated that the southwest was more prone to severe heatwaves. The PM experienced more heatwaves after 2000 than before. Overall, the heatwave-affected area in PM has increased by 8.98 km2/decade and its duration by 1.54 days/decade. The highest population affected was located in the central south region of PM. Climatic condition is triggering human health emergencies and earth's surface changes. Anthropogenic activities, such as built-up expansion, transportation development, industrial works, and some extreme phases, are the main reason for climate change and global warming. Air pollutants are increased gradually due to anthropogenic activities and triggering the earth's health. Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) are truthfully important for air quality measurement because those air pollutants are more harmful to the environment and human's health. Earth observational Sentinel-5P is applied for monitoring the air pollutant and chemical conditions in the atmosphere from 2018 to 2021. The cloud computing-based Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform is applied for monitoring those air pollutants and chemical components in the atmosphere. The NO2 variation indicates high during the time because of the anthropogenic activities. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is also located high between two 1-month different maps. The 2020 and 2021 results indicate AQI change is high where 2018 and 2019 indicates low AQI throughout the year. The Kolkata have seven AQI monitoring station where high nitrogen dioxide recorded 102 (2018), 48 (2019), 26 (2020) and 98 (2021), where Delhi AQI stations recorded 99 (2018), 49 (2019), 37 (2020), and 107 (2021). Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, and Chennai recorded huge fluctuations of air pollutants during the study periods, where ~ 50–60% NO2 was recorded as high in the recent time. The AOD was noticed high in Uttar Pradesh in 2020. Developing accurate soft computing methods for groundwater level (GWL) forecasting is essential for enhancing the planning and management of water resources. Over the past two decades, significant progress has been made in GWL prediction using machine learning (ML) models. Several review articles have been published, reporting the advances in this field up to 2018. However, the existing review articles do not cover several aspects of GWL simulations using ML, which are significant for scientists and practitioners working in hydrology and water resource management. The current review article aims to provide a clear understanding of the state-of-the-art ML models implemented for GWL modeling and the milestones achieved in this domain. The review includes all of the types of ML models employed for GWL modeling from 2008 to 2020 (138 articles) and summarizes the details of the reviewed papers, including the types of models, data span, time scale, input and output parameters, performance criteria used, and the best models identified. Climate change exacerbates extreme heat events in the North Africa and Arabian Peninsula (NAAP) region, posing a significant threat to human health and well-being. This study proposes a novel approach for reliable mapping of population exposure in NAAP to different UTCI levels under future climate change scenarios by improved prediction of UTCI using machine learning (ML) methods. Daily mean UTCI was calculated using hourly ERA-HEAT data from 1979 to 2022. Sobol's global sensitivity analysis was used to identify the most influential meteorological variables affecting UTCI. Three ML models were trained to predict monthly UTCI based on these variables. The best-performing model was used to generate historical and future projections of UTCI for four CMIP6 climate models under Paris Agreement goal scenarios. Finally, the projected change in population exposure to mean UTCI was assessed by comparing historical and future projections. The results showed a significant influence of air temperature, wind speed, surface pressure, solar radiation, and humidity on UTCI in NAAP. Estimation of UTCI using these variables showed a higher performance of random forest (RF) (Kling-Gupta Efficiency = 0.84) compared to other models. The projection of UTCI from CMIP6 climatic model simulations using the RF model revealed a decrease in UTCI for the 1.5 °C temperature rise scenario by 0.25–0.75 °C, while an increase by 0.25–0.75 °C for the 2.0 °C temperature rise scenario in most of NAAP. The study revealed that even a modest increase of 0.5 °C in global warming could lead to a 20-day increase in the number of days with moderate thermal stress in Egypt and Sudan and a significant increase in the number of days with strong thermal stress in the Arabian Peninsula. The population exposure to heat stress would increase significantly even under the most ambitious Paris Agreement goals.
