Valproic acid or sodium valproate is a widely used drug in the treatment of epilepsy, although it also appears to have anxiolytic and sedative properties derived from its agonistic action on the GABAergic system. To analyze these potential effects of the drug, we conducted three experiments with rats using procedures designed to assess anxiety in rodents. In the first experiment, with a fear conditioning procedure, three groups of male rats were included that received either 100 mg/kg or 300 mg/kg of valproate or an equivalent volume of saline solution. In Experiment 2, recording spontaneous activity in an open field, we compared the effects of valproic acid (300 mg/kg) on male and female rats. In the third experiment, we analyzed the effect of valproic acid using a novelty‐induced hypophagia test and tested again for potential differences as a function of the sex of the animals. The results showed an anxiolytic effect restricted to the 300 mg/kg dose of the drug in Experiment 1. Such an effect was restricted to the female sample in Experiment 2, but in the third experiment affected both sexes. As for the sedative effect, it was observed in all experiments irrespective of the sex of the rats. These findings hold significant implications for the treatment of anxiety disorders since valproate may offer a novel therapeutic approach for anxiety‐related conditions with distinct benefits and fewer side effects. Introduction Methods Results Conclusion The potential benefit of intraoperative wound irrigation (IOWI) in preventing surgical site infection (SSI) remains unclear. The use of antimicrobial agents (AMA) or antiseptic agents (ASA) is controversial worldwide.We performed a systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomized clinical trials comparing AMA or ASA with saline solution in patients who underwent abdominal surgery. Sub‐analyses were performed on the type of surgery, type of intervention agent, and wound classification.Nineteen studies comprising 4915 patients undergoing abdominal surgery were included. SSI was observed in 207 out of 2504 patients in the intervention group (8.26 %) and 344 out of 2411 patients in the control group (14.27%). Overall, intraoperative wound irrigation (IOWI) with AMA or ASA was associated with a lower SSI (Odds ratio (OR) 0.62; 95% CI 0.47, 0.82; p < 0.01; I2 = 50%). Sub‐analyses have shown a tendency for decreased SSI in patients from emergency surgery (OR 0.46; 95% CI 0.30, 0.70; p < 0.01; I2 = 23%), patients with contaminated wound (OR 0.48; 95% CI 0.31, 0.74; p < 0.01; I2 = 24%), and either the use of AMA or ASA (OR 0.53 vs. 0.65).The overall use of AMA or ASA before skin closure was associated with decreased SSI. In the present study the authors' main goal is to avoid the corrosive attack of the chloride ions of 3.5% NaCl solution in saline medium on the mild steel (MS), by addition of small amount of a new derivative of the hydrazide called ligand (HL), as a corrosion inhibitor. This study had been achieved by employing different electrochemical measurements such as, open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentio-dynamic polarization (PDP) methods. The results of the electrochemical test (OCP), showed that, the open circuit potential of the mild steel in saline solution, was guided to more positive direction in presence of the ligand (HL), at its ideal concentration (1 × 10−3 M), compared to the (OCP), of the mild steel in absence of (HL). The results of the electrochemical methods, EIS and PDP presented that, the ligand (HL), was acted as a good corrosion inhibitor for hindering the corrosion process of the mild steel in 3.5% sodium chloride, as it was recorded a good percentage of the inhibition efficiency (77.45%, 53.41%, by EIS and PDP techniques respectively), at its optimum concentration (1 × 10−3 M). Also, the corrosion rate of the mild steel in the saline medium without (HL), was listed about (0.0017 mm/year), while in existence of (HL), was decreased to a value about (0.00061 mm/year). As well, some of electrical properties of (HL), and its derivative [Pd(II), Cr(III), and Ru(III)], complexes were investigated such as; the activation energy (Ea(ac)), which recorded values in the range of 0.02–0.44 (eV) range and electrical conductivity which listed values at room temperature in the range of 10−5–10−8 S.cm−1. The results of the AC and DC electrical conductivity measurements for (HL), and its derivative [Pd(II), Cr(III) and Ru(III)] complexes indicate semiconducting nature which suggests that these compounds could be used in electronic devices. Also, the complexes exhibited higher conductivity values than (HL). Photophysical studies showed good florescence properties of HL that indicated that it can be used to determine most of the drugs with no fluorescence properties by quenching and calculating quantum yield. Moreover, the hydrazide ligand (HL), has shown selectivity as an active anticancer candidate drug for both breast and colon cancer in humans. Density function theory demonstrated that, the frontier molecular orbital HOMOs of the complexes have exhibited similar behavior and the charge density has localized in the metallic region of all the studied complexes. Also, the values of the energy gap of the ligand (HL), and its complexes Pd(II), Cr(III) and Ru(III), had been arranged in this order HL > Cr(III) > Ru(III) > Pd(II). All characterization using different spectroscopic techniques were reported to elucidate the proposed structures such as; thermal analysis, elemental analysis of C, H, and N atoms, spectral analysis using IR, UV, 1H NMR techniques, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analyses. Double ferrite nanocomposites with NiF 2 O 4 as the core and ZnFe 2 O 4 as the shell, were synthesised through combination of co-precipitation and hydrothermal methods. This two-step process resulted in formation of a cubic structured core of around 100 nm and a shell of zinc ferrite nanoparticles which are below 10 nm in size. The core/shell structures were characterised using various techniques such as XRD, Raman, TEM/EDS and VSM. In addition, Ni leaching out of these structures was tested in the ultra-pure water and saline solution. These analyses demonstrated that the shell of zinc ferrites effectively prevents Ni leaching from the core keeping the concentration of nickel well below the level usually found in drinking water. Introduction Many trauma patients die from hemorrhagic shock in the military and civilian settings. Although two-thirds of hemorrhagic shock victims die of reasons other than exsanguination, such as the consequent cytokine storm, anti-inflammatory therapies failed to be utilized. Apoptotic cell–based treatments enhance innate ability to exert systemic immunomodulation as demonstrated in several clinical applications and hence might present a novel approach in hemorrhagic shock treatment. Materials and Methods Twenty-two rats underwent a pressure-controlled hemorrhagic shock model and followed up for 24 hours. An infusion of apoptotic cells (Allocetra-OTS, Enlivex Therapeutics Ltd, Nes Ziona, Israel) was administered to the treatment group. Hemodynamics, blood counts, biochemistry findings, and cytokine profile were compared to a saline-resuscitated control group. Results The treatment group's mean arterial pressure decreased from 94.8 mmHg to 28.2 mmHg, resulting in an 8.13 mg/dL increase in lactate and a 1.9 g/L decrease in hemoglobin, similar to the control group. White blood cells and platelets decreased more profoundly in the treatment group. A similar cytokine profile after 24 hours was markedly attenuated in the treatment group 2 hours after bleeding. Levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1a (28.4 pg/mL vs. 179.1 pg/mL), IL-1b (47.4 pg/mL vs. 103.9 pg/mL), IL-6 (526.2 pg/mL vs. 3492 pg/mL), interferon γ (11.4 pg/mL vs. 427.9 pg/mL), and tumor necrosis factor α (19.0 pg/mL vs. 31.7 pg/mL) were profoundly lower in the treatment group. Conclusion In a pressure-control hemorrhagic shock model in rats, apoptotic cell infusion showed preliminary signs of a uniform attenuated cytokine response. When recycled material is used to produce quasicrystal-forming alloys, their price is reduced, which makes them even more attractive. Therefore, this study reports the development of the recycled quasicrystal-forming Al–Cu–Fe alloys with characteristics competitive with those of high purity alloys. A comprehensive understanding of the characterization by directly linking microstructure, mechanical properties and the relationship with electrochemical response was assessed. The microstructures of the alloys were composed of crystalline phases, such as λ-Al3Fe and β-Al(Cu,Fe), as well as Ψ icosahedral quasicrystalline (i-QC) phase. The last one was formed via peritectic reaction by L + β → Ψ . The microstructures were composed of Ψ i-QC phase of two different morphologies (polyhedral-like structure close to a pentagonal dodecahedron and cauliflower-like structure). The alloys presented higher hardness values (> 650 GPa). The higher the quasicrystallinity, the higher (nobler) the corrosion potential. A 48-year-old female presented to the emergency department with severe fatigue. Admission laboratory test results were hemoglobin 6.6 g/dL, platelet count 287,000/μL, and white blood cell count 25,200/μL. Lactate dehydrogenase was elevated at 898 U/L, haptoglobin was markedly decreased (< 31 mg/dL), indirect bilirubin was elevated (5.3 mg/dL), and the absolute reticulocyte count was low at 0.0050/μL. A sample was sent to the immunohematology reference laboratory. The direct antiglobulin test immunoglobulin G was negative; C3 was 1+. All cells were reactive at immediate spin phase, indirect antiglobulin testing (IAT) with polyethylene glycol, with low ionic strength saline, neat, prewarm, and in the solid phase. All cells were nonreactive at IAT-ficin. Additional testing included a cold antibody titer that was 1:4096 and thermal amplitude studies demonstrating reactivity of 2+ at 37°C. These results were consistent with a clinically significant anti-Pr and cold agglutinin disease (CAD). Although rituximab is effective in autoimmune hemolytic anemia, this may take weeks. The patient was treated with pegcetacoplan, a pegylated peptide that targets C3 inhibiting hemolysis. The patient was discharged on day 29 with a hemoglobin of 8 g/dL. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is an established human lung carcinogen, but the carcinogenesis mechanism is poorly understood. Chromosome instability, a hallmark of lung cancer, is considered a major driver of Cr(VI)-induced lung cancer. Unrepaired DNA double-strand breaks are the underlying cause, and homologous recombination repair is the primary mechanism preventing Cr(VI)-induced DNA breaks from causing chromosome instability. Cell culture studies show acute Cr(VI) exposure causes DNA double-strand breaks and increases homologous recombination repair activity. However, the ability of Cr(VI)-induced DNA breaks and repair impact has only been reported in cell culture studies. Therefore, we investigated whether acute Cr(VI) exposure could induce breaks and homologous recombination repair in rat lungs. Male and female Wistar rats were acutely exposed to either zinc chromate particles in a saline solution or saline alone by oropharyngeal aspiration. This exposure route resulted in increased Cr levels in each lobe of the lung. We found Cr(VI) induced DNA double-strand breaks in a concentration-dependent manner, with females being more susceptible than males, and induced homologous recombination repair at similar levels in both sexes. The application of saline solutions for surface coating is pertinent across multiple biomedical fields, various technological sectors, and industries, including agriculture. The drying of salt solution droplets is key to understanding and controlling morphological structures on surfaces. In this paper, we report the study of pattern formation from the evaporation of saline drops (NaCl, CsCl, and KCl) placed on pillars. Our findings indicate that regardless of saline concentration and type, the drying process can be categorized into three modes: stable, metastable, and unstable. In both the stable and metastable modes, the droplet fixes to the pillar during the drying process and ensuing pattern formation; however, the crucial distinction lies in the metastable mode, where the droplet additionally undergoes mass loss through fluid drainage from the walls of the pillars. Conversely, in the unstable drying mode, the droplet undergoes rapid collapse, leading to a substantial loss of mass. The distinct drying modes dictate the resulting patterns on the pillars. We employ measurements of configurational entropy and fractal dimension as quantitative metrics to assess the complexity, reproducibility, and similarity of patterns. The texture analysis reveals that, at low concentrations of both CsCl and KCl, significant differences emerge among the patterns produced by the different drying modes, especially highlighting differences in patterns of the stable drying mode. To assess whether adding metoclopramide to a protocol of maropitant and pantoprazole would reduce incidence of ptyalism, vomiting and regurgitation in brachycephalic dogs undergoing thoracolumbar spinal surgery. Randomized blinded controlled trial. A total of 43 brachycephalic dogs undergoing thoracolumbar spinal surgery. In addition to a standardized anaesthetic regimen, dogs were randomized to be administered either a 2 mg kg–1 day–1 metoclopramide constant rate infusion (CRI) or a saline solution at an equivalent infusion rate, started after anaesthetic induction and discontinued 5 hours after tracheal extubation. The presence of vomiting, regurgitation and pytalism, and short form of the Glasgow Composite Pain Scale pain scores were assessed by a blinded observer hourly for 4 hours, starting 1 hour postextubation. Regurgitation occurred in six dogs postoperatively; three dogs were in the placebo group and three in the metoclopramide group. The odds ratio (OR) of regurgitation after surgery did not differ between groups [OR: 0.76, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.13–4.3, p = 0.76]. The odds of observing ptyalism at 3 and 4 hours was approximately 15 times less than 1 hour postoperatively (both OR: 15.4, 95% CI: 1.8–130.7, p = 0.012) and did not differ based on the addition of metoclopramide (OR: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.07–8.0, p = 0.79). The odds of observing pain did not change over time and did not differ based on the addition of metoclopramide (OR: 0.71, 95% CI: 0.12–4.2, p = 0.71). Vomiting did not occur during the study (0.0%, 95% CI: 0.0–8.2%). No adverse effects were observed during the study period in either group. The addition of a metoclopramide CRI to maropitant and pantoprazole did not result in a significant reduction in ptyalism or regurgitation in brachycephalic dogs undergoing thoracolumbar spinal surgery. This randomized clinical trial aims to evaluate cryotherapy as a therapeutic option for pain prevention after endodontic treatment with and without foraminal enlargement, in patients with asymptomatic apical periodontitis.120 teeth of patients with preoperative Visual Analogue Scale score indicating zero were treated. Specimens were randomly allocated into 4 groups: Control, Cryotherapy (ICT), Foraminal Enlargement (FE), and Cryotherapy and Foraminal Enlargement (ICT + FE). Working length was determined with an Electronic Apex Locator (EAL). Cryotherapy groups passed through a final irrigation protocol using 20 ml (2.5 ℃) of cold saline solution delivered at working length for 5 min. In FE groups a #40 K-file was used up to the 0.0 mark on the EAL display. Obturation was performed and postoperative pain was checked at 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h and 7 days after endodontic treatment.All experimental groups showed an increase in the level of postoperative pain, which started to decrease after 12 h. Foraminal enlargement caused a statistically significant increase in postoperativepain compared to ICT and control groups within the first 6 h (p < 0.05). Corrosion is an inevitable and persistent issue that affects various metallic infrastructures, leading to significant economic losses and safety concerns, particularly in areas near or in contact with saline solutions such as seawater. Green corrosion inhibitors are compounds derived from natural sources that are biodegradable in various environments, offering a promising alternative to their conventional counterparts. Despite their potential, green corrosion inhibitors still face several limitations and challenges when exposed to NaCl environments. This comprehensive review delves into these limitations and associated challenges, shedding light on the progress made in addressing these issues and potential future developments as tools in corrosion management. Explicitly the following aspects are covered: (1) attributes of corrosion inhibitors, (2) general corrosion mechanism, (3) mechanism of corrosion inhibition in NaCl, (4) typical electrochemical and surface characterization techniques, (5) theoretical simulations by Density Functional Theory, and (6) corrosion testing standards and general guidelines for corrosion inhibitor selection. AbstractThe study investigates the drying behavior and desalination effectiveness of porous ceramic tiles made from fired clay materials like bricks or pottery on soil columns initially saturated with saline solution. Evaporation kinetics experiments compared the drying of saline soil with and without a ceramic tile. For soil without a ceramic cover, salt precipitation formed an efflorescent crust that initially (t ∼ 30 h) reduced the evaporation rate. However, with continued drying, the tensile stress caused cracks in the crust, allowing increased evaporation through the cracks (t > 200 h). When covered with a ceramic poultice, the saline solution was wicked into the porous ceramic by capillary action. Rapid salt efflorescence was observed on the ceramic surface. The ceramic layer initially reduced the soil evaporation rate due to pore clogging caused by salt precipitation. The pore structure characteristics of the ceramics significantly impacted their desalination performance. After an initial fast drying period controlled by evaporation, a reduced drying rate was observed as salt clogging effects became dominant, especially for the low porosity ceramic (t ∼20 h). The porous ceramic poultices could effectively extract salts from the soil, but their desalination efficiency depended critically on their pore structure properties. An industrial-based clay ceramic with large and more connected pores (porosity 0.33) was found to be around 62% more efficient in removing NaCl than a handmade pottery with small pores (porosity 0.18). Aim Saline contrast-enhanced electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has been used to identify the respiratory failure etiologies through assessment of regional lung perfusion at the bedside. In this study, we introduce a novel approach to detect right-to-left intracardiac shunt based on the center of heart (CoH) parameter determined from the early phase of impedance–time curve after saline bolus injection. Methods and result The timepoints when the saline bolus enter the heart (T0) and the lung regions (T1) are identified at first. A moving time window from T0 to T1 is then generated with steps of 0.5 s and the slope of the impedance–time curve in each pixel within the window calculated. CoH is calculated as the geometric center of pixel slope values in the right-to-left image direction. To illustrate how this method works in practice, we calculated the CoH values at T0 to T1 in 10 control hypoxic patients with no right-to-left shunt. In addition, we examined two critically ill patients with right-to-left intracardiac shunt. One was postcardiac surgery patient who had a residual atrial septal defect by color doppler of transesophageal echocardiograph. The other patient had a congenital heart disease of ventricular septal defect by color doppler of trans-thoracic echocardiography. A large difference in CoH between T0 to T1 was observed in the two patients with intracardiac shunt than in the control patients (11.06 ± 3.17% vs. 1.99 ± 1.43%, P  = 0.030). Background: The purpose of the present study was to determine the postoperative analgesic effects of preemptive intravenous (iv) paracetamol and the amount of reduction in opioid consumption. Materials and Methods: After obtaining Ethics committee approval, ninety patients were randomly allocated to one of three groups for ASA I-II: Group I was given IV paracetamol 1 g/100 mL ten minutes before skin incision, and they also received 100 mL of normal saline solution after the procedure. Group II was given 100 mL of normal saline solution ten minutes before the skin incision, and they also received 100 mL of IV Paracetamol after the procedure. Group III was given a placebo, who also received 100 mL of normal saline solution ten minutes before the skin incision and 100 mL of normal saline solution at the end of the procedure. The first need for analgesics and the total amount of analgesics consumed in 24 hours were noted. Every patient had their pain scores measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) at the end of the operation. Results: Group I and Group II experienced a substantially longer time to first analgesic demand than Group III (p<0.05). Group I experienced a substantially longer time to first analgesic demand than Group II (p<0.05). Compared to Group III, Group I and II recorded considerably reduced total analgesic intake and postoperative VAS pain score. Group I recorded considerably lower postoperative VAS pain scores and used fewer analgesics overall than Group II (p<0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, preemptive intravenous paracetamol lowered post-operative pain scores, the requirement for and usage of supplemental opioids, and the time to first request analgesics after laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedures. Background Objective Materials and Methods Results Conclusions Chondroitin and glucosamine sulphates (CGS) are considered structure‐modifying drugs and have been studied in the prevention, delay or reversal of structural morphological changes in joints caused by osteoarthritis.The aim of the present study was to investigate the action of CGS on the progression of chemically induced osteoarthritis in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of rabbits by evaluating the serum levels of tumour necrosis factor (TNF‐α) and collagen in the articular discs.A sample of 36 male rabbits was divided into three groups: control (CG), osteoarthritis (OG) and treatment (TG). The disease was induced by intra‐articular injection of sodium monoiodoacetate (10 mg/mL) in the OG and TG groups bilaterally. After 10 days, the TG animals received subcutaneous injection of chondroitin sulphates and glucosamine (7.5 mg/kg) and the OG and CG received saline solution (50 μL). Euthanasia times were subdivided into 40 and 100 days. Collagen quantification was performed by biochemical and histological analysis and for the quantification of serum levels of TNF‐α, an enzyme immunoassay was used.The TG showed an increase in the collagen area of the articular disc when compared to the CG and the OG. The increase collagen concentration in the discs did not show a statistically significant difference between the groups. Post‐treatment TNF‐α levels were significantly lower in TG compared to OG.The results indicate that CGS treatment delayed the degeneration of the collagen in the TMJ articular disc and reduced serum TNF‐α levels, indicating a preventive effect on OA progression. The utilization of biodegradable hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides in the agricultural and biomedical sectors is anticipated to be a growing field of interest. Due to increasing environmental pollution, the current global goal is to synthesize sustainable materials based on natural polysaccharides to conserve natural resources for the future. In this study, we synthesized an amla-based hydrogel, denoted as AL-g-poly(MAA), using the graft-free radical polymerization method. Methacrylic acid (MAA) was employed as the monomer, N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) served as the crosslinker, and ammonium persulfate (APS) acted as the initiator. The synthesized hydrogel, AL-g-poly(MAA), underwent optimization by adjusting seven parameters: initiator, solvent, time, monomer, power, pH, and crosslinker, to achieve the highest swelling percentage. The optimized values were as follows: solvent: 10 ml, time: 150 s, monomer: 0.039 mol/L, power: 60%, pH: 7, and crosslinker: 0.0648 mol/L. The cross-linking process was confirmed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The swelling behavior of the synthesized hydrogels was determined in saline solutions with varying ionic strengths and concentrations, revealing maximum swelling in solutions with lower ionic strengths and concentrations. Additionally, the density and porosity of the hydrogels were examined. The biodegradability of AL-g-poly(MAA) was tested through soil burial and vermicomposting experiments, demonstrating its significant potential for agriculture applications. Furthermore, both the backbone and the synthesized hydrogel were evaluated for antibacterial activity against four bacterial strains (Burkholderia gladioli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus), revealing strong potential as an antimicrobial agent and therefore having applications in the biomedical field. This article discusses the use of nebulized hypertonic saline solution for the treatment of acute bronchiolitis in infants. Acute bronchiolitis is a common lower respiratory tract infection in children under 2 years old, often caused by the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). The article presents the findings of a Cochrane review, which suggests that nebulized hypertonic saline solution may slightly reduce the risk of hospitalization and decrease the length of hospital stay for infants with bronchiolitis. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on Streptococcus mutans biofilm in the oral cavity using the photosensitizer chloroaluminum phthalocyanine encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles (ClAlPc/Ch) at three preirradiation times. Methods: Biofilms of Streptococcus mutans strains (ATCC 25,175) were cultivated on bovine tooth blocks and exposed to a 10% sucrose solution three times a day for 1 min over three consecutive days. The samples were randomly distributed into five treatment groups (n = 5): (I) aPDT with ClAlPc/Ch with a preirradiation time of 5 min (F5), (II) aPDT with ClAlPc/Ch with a preirradiation time of 15 min (F15), (III) aPDT with ClAlPc/Ch with a preirradiation time of 30 min (F30), (IV) 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), and (V) 0.9% saline solution (NaCl). After treatment, the S. mutans biofilms formed on each specimen were collected to determine the number of viable bacteria (colony-forming units (CFU)/mL). Data were analyzed for normality using the Shapiro–Wilk test and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD tests to analyze the number of viable bacteria (α = 0.05). Results: The one-way ANOVA showed a difference between the groups (p = 0.0003), and the Tukey HSD posttest showed that CHX had the highest microbial reduction of S. mutans, not statistically different from the F5 and F15 groups, whereas the NaCl group had the lowest microbial reduction statistically similar to the F30 group. Conclusion: The results demonstrate that aPDT mediated by ClAlPc/Ch when used at preirradiation times of 5–15 min can be an effective approach in controlling cariogenic biofilm of S. mutans, being an alternative to 0.12% CHX. Background Methods Results Conclusions Injections of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT‐A) have been proposed as an additional treatment modality for patients suffering chronic temporomandibular disorder (TMD)‐related myofascial pain (MFP). BoNT‐A impairs muscle function, along with its analgesic effect, and a minimal effective dose should be used. The objective of this randomized placebo‐controlled crossover study was to evaluate the clinical benefit of a moderate dose (50 U) of BoNT‐A.Sixty‐six subjects were randomized into two groups, one which received BoNT‐A first and a second which received a saline solution (SS) first. Follow‐ups were performed 2, 11, and 16 weeks after the injections. Diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (DC/TMD) diagnostic algorithms were used to evaluate characteristic pain intensity (CPI) and pain‐related disability based on the Graded Chronic Pain Scale (GCPS). Electromyographic and bite force were also evaluated.The within‐group analysis showed a significant improvement in pain intensity and pain‐related disability after BoNT‐A (p < 0.001, p = 0.005, p = 0.011) and SS (p = 0.003, p = 0.005, p = 0.046) injections up to week 16. The between‐group analysis of pain‐related variables revealed no differences between groups at any time. Nonetheless, BoNT‐A, but not SS, caused a significant decline in muscle performance. The number needed to treat (NNT) regarding a clinically significant pain reduction (≥30%) was 6.3, 57.0, and 19.0 at 2, 11, and 16‐week follow‐ups favoring BoNT‐A.Injections of 50 U of BoNT‐A might improve MFP symptoms, but the specific effect of the drug on pain compared to the placebo is not obvious. The aim of the present study was to determine the extenders such as calcium-free saline, Ringer’s solution and phosphate buffer and to determine the effect of different concentrations of cryoprotectants with different duration of exposure for short-term storage of mud crab, Scylla tranquebarica sperm cells. A total of 30 mud crabs were used in the present study. In the present study, three treatments with three replicates were tested to determine the suitable extender. Three treatments (dimethyl sulfoxide, glycine and glycerol) were tested to determine the suitable cryoprotectants. Eight treatments (25, 20, 16, 4, 2, -4, -20, and -80°C) were assessed to determine the optimal cooling rate. The result showed the phosphate buffer solution produced the highest sperm viability (82.36 ± 5.84%) after 60 min compared the calcium-free saline and Ringer’s solution. Using 5% glycine as the optimal cryoprotectant, sperm viability at -80°C exhibited robust initial viability 95.17 ± 0.92% at 6 hours, 94.11 ± 0.64% at 12 hours, and 93.31 ± 0.51% at 24 hours. However, sperm viability gradually declined to 90.84 ± 2.05% by day 7, 82.82 ± 0.41% by day 14, and continued to decrease by day 21. This study aims to analyze the administration of microencapsulated probiotic Bacillus cereus BR2 through feed atdifferent doses on the survival, immune response, and digestive enzyme activity of catfish Clarias sp. infected with Aeromonas hydrophila NFC1. The research design consisted of five treatments and three replications, (K-) feeding without the supplementation of probiotics fish injected with Phosphate-buffered saline solution, (K+) feeding without the supplementation of probiotics fish injected with A. hydrophila NFC1 cell suspension (106 CFU/mL), (P1) feeding with supplementation of B. cereus BR2 microcapsules at a dose of 0.5% (w/w), (P2) feeding with the supplementation of B. cereus BR2 microcapsules at a dose of 1% (w/w; (P3) feeding with the supplementation of B. cereus BR2 microcapsules at a dose of 2% (w/w). All treatments of P1, P2, and P3 were intramuscularly injected with A. hydrophila NFC1 cell suspension. Catfish in average body weight of 3.73 ± 0.22 g were reared in tanks filled with 30 liters of water, at a density of 15 fish per container. A feed supplementation trial was performed for 40 days with feeding times three times a day and a 5% feeding rate reevaluated based on biomass. Fish rearing was continued after the challenge test with A. hydrophila NFC1 for 10 days. The results showed that the application of supplemented feed containing B. cereus BR2 probiotic microcapsules increased the survival rate, immune response, and digestive enzyme activities of catfish which was infected with A. hydrophila NFC1, 2% microcapsule supplementation demonstrated the best result. Horses that sweat during exercise lose considerable amounts of water and electrolytes, such as sodium (Na), potassium (K) and chloride (Cl). Significant sweat losses between 7–10L can occur even during moderate exercise in leisure horses (500–600kg body mass); significantly higher sweat losses can be observed in endurance riding or in Three-day eventing competitions. Numerous studies have shown that most leisure and sport horses cannot compensate their increased Na and Cl requirements via a salt lick, whereas the K supply can be covered by an adequate roughage intake, even under situations with a high K requirement. The oral supplementation of electrolytes, especially Na and Cl, is a useful strategy in order to replace electrolytes that are lost by sweating in leisure and in sport horses. Although there are numerous electrolyte supplements on the market, commercial products are usually not well formulated, so that salt supplementation (e.g., table salt without fluorine and iodine) is recommended in the nutritional management of hoses. Adding electrolytes into the diet, sufficient water must be always freely available in order (i) to compensate water losses through sweating; (ii) promoting electrolyte absorption in the gastrointestinal tract; and (iii) counteracting the risks of salt overdosing, as renal elimination is dependent on water supply. Horses should be adapted to the oral supplementation of electrolytes/salt e.g., in combination with palatable feed. The application of electrolytes via the drinking water is often not recommended, as the palatability of saline solutions in horses is low and can individually vary from horse to horse. Isosteviol has been investigated with a cardio-treating effect on cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. However, its hydrophilicity suppressed its efficient cellular uptake for targeting the heart. Exosomes were seen as delivery vesicles with excellent histocompatibility; thus, an isosteviol-loaded exosome (Istv-exo) was prepared for cardiopulmonary delivery in this study. For in vivo evaluation, the Istv-exo and isosteviol saline solution was used for inhalation or intragastric administration on Sprague–Dawley rats for an assay of dynamic distribution. The higher biodistribution of Istv-exo in the lung and heart has been confirmed by the dynamic content curve. Istv-exo/isosteviol solution was administered by inhalation/intragastrically to Myh6-/- mice, a cardiomyocyte hypertrophy model, to explore the therapeutic effect. The heart function of the mice was measured using echocardiography and in situ imaging was used to analyze the morphology of the heart. The higher level of left ventricular internal dimension, ejection fraction, and cardiac output in echocardiography indicated that Istv-exo enhanced improvement of myocardial function. The attenuation of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy in mice treated with inhalation of Istv-exo determined that it contributed to the reversal of pathological hypertrophy phenotypes. Wheat germ agglutinin staining confirmed that cardiomyocyte hypertrophy was reversed to varying degrees in the Istv-exo, intragastrical isosteviol, and positive control groups. Hematoxylin and eosin staining exhibited the enlarging left ventricular and thinning ventricular wall of the treated mice. Drastically less collagen fiber was observed in the positive control group and Istv-exo group. Orthopedic and dental equipment have always been made of Ti and its alloys. In physiological saline solution, the corrosion behavior of the β-Ti alloy, as a possible replacement for Ti and Ti6Al4V in medical applications, was studied. In agreement with the EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), the PPCs (potentiodynamic polarization curves) findings, and the OCP (the open circuit potential), the specimens' resistance of corrosion declines in the next arrangement: β-Ti alloy > Ti6Al4V alloy > Ti in a physiological saline solution (PSS). Because of the thin layer of Ti oxide that forms on its surface, the β-Ti alloy is widely known for its ability to resist corrosion in dental applications. H2O2, a reactive oxygen species that is present during inflammation, and albumin, the most prevalent protein in biological fluids, were added to in vitro tests to stimulate peri-implant inflammatory conditions. Consequently, for the first time in PSS at 310 K, electrochemical and long-term immersion tests were utilized to assay the impact of BSA (bovine serum albumin) and H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) on the β-Ti alloy corrosion. Because hydrogen peroxide has a high oxidizing effect, its existence increases the OCP's positive trend. The EIS and PPCs show that albumin suppresses both the cathodic reaction and the anodic dissolution, whereas hydrogen peroxide enhances both the cathodic and anodic reactions. Introduction: Despite a potential risk of bladder injury in laparoscopic hysterectomy (LH) and robot‐assisted LH (RaLH), an intraoperative method for delineating the entire bladder with indocyanine green (ICG) has not been established. Methods: We conducted a preliminary experiment using porcine bladders to verify the appropriate amount of ICG for intraoperative bladder visualization. Afterward, intraoperative bladder visualization was tried in LH and RaLH in two patients suspected of having adhesions around the bladder after previous abdominal surgery. Results: Although near‐infrared (NIR) fluorescence was well observed through the wall of the porcine bladder filled with ICG solution at a concentration of 0.024 mg/mL, the subsequent replacement of the ICG solution with saline made the NIR fluorescence brighter. In both patients, the bladder was successfully delineated by NIR fluorescence after filling the bladder with ICG solution and the subsequent washout with saline. Plants play a crucial role in soil fixation and enhancement of slope stability, and saline–alkaline stress is one of the main restrictions inhibiting plant growth and development. At present, there is a lack of research on the effects of saline–alkaline composite stress on the mechanical properties of the root system and the erosion resistance of the root–soil complex. In this study, three gradients of saline–alkaline composite stress treatments and a control of saline-free treatment was set up for Oenothera biennis, Perilla frutescens, Echinops sphaerocephalus, and Lychnis fulgens. The plant salt damage rate, osmotic index, antioxidant enzyme activity and plant root morphological indicators were measured. The biomechanical characteristics were determined by stretching tests, the resistance of the plant was measured by a whole-plant vertical uprooting test, and the anti-erosion capacity of the root soil composite was measured by scrubbing test. The results showed that, at 200 mM, the salt damage index and salt damage rate of the four plants, in descending order, were as follows: E. sphaerocephalus < L. fulgens < O. biennis < P. frutescens. Among them, SOD of Perilla frutescens did not play an obvious protective role, and the substantial changes in CAT and POD, as well as the content of soluble sugars, soluble proteins, and proline, showed its sensitivity to saline and alkaline stresses. Root growth was also significantly suppressed in all four plants, the 100- and 200-mM concentrations of saline solution significantly reduced the average tensile strength of O. biennis and P. frutescens, while the saline–alkali solution of 200 mM significantly reduced the elongation of E. sphaerocephalus and L. fulgens, and significantly elevated the soil detachment rate of the root–soil composite for E. sphaerocephalus. Additionally, all three concentrations of saline treatments significantly reduced the pullout resistance of all 4 plants. There was a negative power rate relationship between tensile resistance and root diameter in four plant species, while the relationship between tensile strength and root diameter showed a negative power law only for L. fulgens treated with 0–50 mM saline solution. There was no significant correlation between elongation and root diameter in the four plants. P. frutescens had the greatest tensile resistance and strength, as well as the lowest rate of elongation, while L. fulgens possessed the greatest pullout resistance, and both had comparable resistance to erosion of the root–soil complex. Pulmonary drug delivery offers a minimally invasive and efficient method for treating lung conditions, leveraging the lungs' extensive surface area and blood flow for rapid drug absorption. Nebulized therapies aim to deliver drugs directly to the lung tissue. This study investigates the histological impact of nebulized tocilizumab—a monoclonal antibody targeting IL-6, traditionally administered intravenously for rheumatoid arthritis and severe COVID-19—on a murine model. Thirty BALB/c mice were nebulized with tocilizumab (10 mg, 5 mg, and 2.5 mg) and six controls were nebulized with saline solution. They were euthanized 48 h later, and their organs (lungs, nasal mucosa, and liver) were analyzed by a microscopic histological evaluation. The results indicate that all the mice survived the 48 h post-nebulization period without systemic compromise. The macroscopic examination showed no abnormalities, and the histopathological analysis revealed greater lung vascular changes in the control group than in the nebulized animals, which is attributable to the euthanasia with carbon dioxide. Additionally, increased alveolar macrophages were observed in the nebulized groups compared to controls. No significant histological changes were observed in the liver, indicating the safety of nebulized tocilizumab. In conclusion, these findings suggest the potential of nebulized tocilizumab for treating pulmonary inflammation, warranting further research to establish its efficacy and safety in clinical settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the effects of low-dose subarachnoid injections of 2% lidocaine (LIDO) and 0.5% bupivacaine (BUPI) in goats. ANIMALS: 6 healthy, privately owned female goats. METHODS In this randomized blind crossover clinical trial, each goat received 0.05 mL/kg-1 of LIDO, BUPI, or sterile saline solution into the lumbosacral subarachnoid space, with a seven-day washout. Cardiorespiratory variables, rectal temperature, and somatosensory (pinprick) and motor (ataxia) functions were recorded at baseline (time 0) and 2, 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes after injection, then every 20 minutes until the goat was standing and able to walk. Time to regain somatosensory and motor functions was compared between treatments using Kaplan-Meier survival curves and the Cox proportional hazards model. Linear mixed-effects models were used to compare cardiorespiratory variables between treatments and over time. A P value ≤ .05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Somatosensory recovery was longer with BUPI, though not statistically significant. The median time to stand was 50 (50, 67) minutes after LIDO injection and 104 (101, 156) minutes after BUPI injection (P = .031). The median time to walk was 72 (54, 85) minutes after LIDO versus 225 (220, 245) minutes after BUPI injection (P = .031). Cardiovascular and respiratory variables showed no significant differences between treatments. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Despite prolonged ataxia with BUPI, pinprick sensation recovery did not differ. Background: Infections are complications in the wound healing process, and their treatment can lead to antibiotic overuse and bacterial resistance. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is used to treat infectious diseases caused by fungi, viruses, or bacteria. Methylene blue (MB) and its derivatives are commonly used dyes in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT–MB). Methods: This study is a PRISMA systematic review of animal models used to discuss the usefulness and therapeutic parameters of aPDT–MB or its derivatives for treating infected skin wounds. Results: After an extensive literature review, 13 controlled trials totaling 261 animals were selected to evaluate skin infection by leishmaniasis and cutaneous bacterial and fungal infections. All studies found results favoring the use of aPDT–MB. Great variability in parameters was found for radiant exposure from 12 to 360 J/cm2, MB diluted in saline solution or distilled water, irradiation time from 40 to 3600 s, irradiance most commonly at a maximum of 100 mW/cm2, and wavelength used mainly in the 630–670 nm range. Conclusion: MB is a safe and promising agent used as a photosensitizer in aPDT for skin‐infected lesions. There is great variability in the parameters found. Purpose: We aimed to assess the effectiveness of early single intravesical administration of epirubicin in preventing intravesical recurrence after radical nephroureterectomy for upper tract urothelial carcinoma. Materials and Methods: Patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma who underwent radical nephroureterectomy between November 2018 and May 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. Intravesical epirubicin was administered within 48 hours if no evidence of leakage was observed. Epirubicin (50 mg) in 50 mL normal saline solution was introduced into the bladder via a catheter and maintained for 60 minutes. The severity of adverse events was graded using the Clavien-Dindo classification. We compared intravesical recurrence rate between the two groups. Multivariate analyses were performed to identify the independent predictors of bladder recurrence following radical nephroureterectomy. Results: Epirubicin (n=55) and control (n=116) groups were included in the analysis. No grade 1 or higher bladder symptoms have been reported. A statistically significant difference in the intravesical recurrence rate was observed between the two groups (11.8% at 1 year in the epirubicin group vs. 28.4% at 1 year in the control group; log-rank p=0.039). In multivariate analysis, epirubicin instillation (hazard ratio [HR], 0.43; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.20 to 0.93; p=0.033) and adjuvant chemotherapy (HR, 0.29; 95% CI, 0.13 to 0.65; p=0.003) were independently predictive of a reduced incidence of bladder recurrence. Conclusion This retrospective review revealed that a single immediate intravesical instillation of epirubicin is safe and can reduce the incidence of intravesical recurrence after radical nephroureterectomy. INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic approaches to varicose veins include sclerotherapy, laser ablation, and surgery. Using sclerosing agents such as hypertonic saline, polidocanol, and glycerol can be an option in cases of recurrent varicose veins. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of hypertonic saline, polidocanol, and glycerol as sclerosant agents in an in vivo study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was an experimental study on 24 Javan rabbits, divided into three treatment groups: hypertonic saline (group I, n=8), polidocanol (group II, n=8), and glycerol (group III, n=8). All animals received treatment by injection into the vein behind the ear, then vein damming 10 minutes later. Punch tissue samples for standard histopathological examination were taken from blood vessels at 1 hour, 24 hours, 7 days, and 45 days posttreatment across all groups. The histopathology changes were scored based on inflammation, proliferation, luminal narrowing, and fibrosis. RESULT: No differences were observed in the degrees of inflammation, proliferation, luminal narrowing, or fibrosis at different observation intervals. However, a significant and positive correlation was found between inflammation, vascular proliferation, and fibrosis with all sclerosing agents (p<0.005). No significant correlation exists in the scoring of luminal narrowing among any sclerosing agent (p>0.005). CONCLUSION: Hypertonic saline, polidocanol, and glycerol demonstrated comparable efficacy as sclerosing agents in vivo concerning fibrosis, vascular proliferation, and inflammation. The novel zinc-incorporated superabsorbent hydrogel (ZSAH) was fabricated by interpenetrating zinc micronutrient in xanthan gum and carboxymethyl tamarind kernel gum with sodium methacrylate. Various compositions of SAH hydrogels were fabricated by varying the concentrations of biopolymers, monomer, cross-linker, and initiator. Zinc chloride was incorporated in the best-swelled hydrogel for the release of Zinc as a micronutrient. Synthesized SAH and ZSAH were characterized by FTIR, SEM, and TGA techniques. The influence of various solvents, such as standard saline solution, different pH solutions (4, 9, and 12), and distilled water on the swelling degree of ZSAH. Moreover, ZSAH was utilized for controlled-release studies of zinc micronutrient in both soil and water. Moreover, the kinetic modeling of zinc release was done using Korsmeyer–Peppas and Higuchi models. It was found that the Korsmeyer–Peppas model with a higher value of regression coefficient (R2) close to unity fitted well in the zinc release pattern in soil and water. Moreover, the estimated value of diffusion exponent (n) indicated that the mechanism of zinc release followed Fickian diffusion. The ZSAH was used for the study of sesame plant growth. Introduction. Intestinal obstruction secondary to the use of fortified milk is a rare cause in pre-term patients. Case report. We present the case of a female pre-term newborn admitted as a result of abdominal distension and rectal bleeding, which mimicked necrotizing enterocolitis. On abdominal X-ray, she had an obstruction pattern, and on ultrasonography, echogenic masses at the distal ileum were observed. Given the lack of improvement with conservative management, urgent exploratory laparotomy was decided upon. At surgery, compact milk masses at the level of the distal ileum were identified as the cause of intestinal obstruction. Appendicostomy and lavage with saline solution through the ileocecal valve were performed. This allowed milk masses to come out towards the colon, and a great amount of acholic stools to be expelled. Conclusion. The increase in “milk curd syndrome” cases should lead us to consider this cause in the differential diagnosis of intestinal obstruction in pre-term newborns fed with fortified milk. Introduction: Stress response to surgery is characterized by increase in secretion of endocrinal system and activation of immunological and sympathetic nervous system. Alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonists have several beneficial actions during the perioperative period. They decrease sympathetic tone, with attenuation of the neuroendocrine and hemodynamic responses to anaesthesia and surgery; reduce anaesthetic and opioid requirements; and cause sedation and analgesia. Aims and objectives; The objective of this study is to evaluate the intra-operative, and postoperative haemodynamic stress responses in patients, when Dexmedetomidine is used as an anaesthetic adjunct. Materials and Method: After the approval from Ethical Committee of Guntur medical college, Guntur, A.P, 100 patients scheduled for elective surgery planned to be done under general anaesthesia were included in the study.Patients were randomly divided into two equal groups, according to the study drug administered, each group include 50 patients in number (n=50), group I (the control or placebo group) and group II (Dexmedetomidine group). Patients received either Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride (available as 100 μg/ml ) in group II or saline solution in group I in equal amount. Data were collected and entered into the software STATA (version 11.0). P<0.05 was considered significant and P>0.05 was considered insignificant. Results: There was no significant difference in the base line parameters among the groups. Dexmedetomidine decreased heart rate significantly compared to control group. Dexmedetomidine reduced the intraoperative use of Propofol and Fentanyl significantly compared to control group. Conclusion: The perioperative infusion of Dexmedetomidine appears to be effective to attenuate stress induced haemodynamic fluctuation, reduced Propofol requirements, decreased the intra and post-operative narcotic analgesic administration, produced perioperative sedation in patients who underwent elective surgeries when compared with placebo. Adhesives can intimately connect humans to machines, seamlessly bond diverse tissues in the human body, and manage various diseases. However, the precise spatial control of wet and tough adhesion of biocompatible hydrogels on biological tissues remains a major challenge. Inspired by the bioglue secreted by sandcastle worms, the design of printable tough adhesives (PTAs) is proposed, a supramolecular hydrogel that can be printed into defined structures, in situ mechanically reinforced into a tough matrix with physiologically relevant benign triggers, and strongly adhere to diverse substrates. With carefully selected polymer components and ratios, it is discovered that the 3D printed PTAs can achieve a marked increase in toughness, tensile strength, and stiffness after being immersed in water/saline solution or attached to biological tissues. To assess the robust toughening mechanism triggered by the supramolecular interactions, the effects of polymer content and pH on the mechanical performance of PTAs and the kinetics of their triggered reinforcement are thoroughly investigated. The potential of PTAs is further demonstrated for manufacturing tough connective tissue mimetics, controlling patterned bioadhesion, and designing programmable 4D soft robotics. Purpose: Dry eye syndrome is a common ocular disease that causes morbidity, high healthcare burden, and decreased quality of life. In this study, we evaluated the beneficial effects of a standardized extract of small black soybean (EYESOY®) in a benzalkonium chloride (BAC)-induced murine model of dry eye. Methods: Experimental dry eye was induced by instillation of 0.02% BAC on the right eye of the Sprague-Dawley rats. Saline solution or EYESOY were administered orally every day for 8 weeks. Results: EYESOY significantly improved tear volume in the cornea compared with that in the BAC group. Moreover, EYESOY inhibited damage to the corneal epithelial cells and lacrimal glands by suppressing the oxidative and inflammatory responses in a mouse dry eye model. It also increased the goblet cell density and mucin integrity in the conjunctiva. Conclusions: Our results suggest that EYESOY has the potential to alleviate dry eye syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mitoxantrone (MTX) is a therapeutic agent used in the treatment of solid tumors and multiple sclerosis, recognized for its cardiotoxicity, with underlying molecular mechanisms not fully disclosed. The cardiotoxicity is influenced by risk factors, including age. Our study intended to assess the molecular effect of MTX on the cardiac muscle of old male CD-1 mice. Mice aged 19 months received a total cumulative dose of 4.5 mg/kg of MTX (MTX group) or saline solution (CTRL group). Two months post treatment, blood was collected, animals sacrificed, and the heart removed. MTX caused structural cardiac changes, which were accompanied by extracellular matrix remodeling, as indicated by the increased ratio between matrix metallopeptidase 2 and metalloproteinase inhibitor 2. At the metabolic level, decreased glycerol levels were found, together with a trend towards increased content of the electron transfer flavoprotein dehydrogenase. In contrast, lower glycolysis, given by the decreased content of glucose transporter GLUT4 and phosphofructokinase, seemed to occur. The findings suggest higher reliance on fatty acids oxidation, despite no major remodeling occurring at the mitochondrial level. Furthermore, the levels of glutamine and other amino acids (although to a lesser extent) were decreased, which aligns with decreased content of the E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase Atrogin-1, suggesting a decrease in proteolysis. As far as we know, this was the first study made in old mice with a clinically relevant dose of MTX, evaluating its long-term cardiac effects. Even two months after MTX exposure, changes in metabolic fingerprint occurred, highlighting enduring cardiac effects that may require clinical vigilance. The corrosion behavior of the TiN monolayer and CrN/TiN multilayer coatings deposited via cathodic arc evaporation physical vapor deposition (CAE‐PVD) on the Ti–6Al–4V substrates were evaluated in Ringer's and Hank's physiological saline electrolytes. XRD (x‐ray diffractometry) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis were used to characterize the coatings. The corrosion behavior of coatings was assessed by impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of coatings was increased in the order of TiN‐Ringer's < TiN‐Hank's < CrN/TiN‐Ringer's < CrN/TiN‐Hank's. Therefore, it can be concluded that the CrN/TiN coating, due to having a large number of interfaces and a smoother surface with fewer macroparticles and pinholes, is more efficient in raising the corrosion resistance properties of titanium than TiN monolayer coating. Moreover, it was observed that Ringer's solution is a more severe environment than Hank's solution. Both coatings, because of the precipitation of a protective corrosion products layer on their surface, showed an enhancement in corrosion resistance with increasing the immersion time from 1 to 14 days in Hank's. Therapeutic vaccines based on monocyte‐derived dendritic cells have been shown to be promising strategies and may act as complementary treatments for viral infections, cancers, and, more recently, autoimmune diseases. Alpha‐type‐1‐polarized dendritic cells (aDC1s) have been shown to induce type‐1 immunity with a high capacity to produce interleukin‐12p70 (IL‐12p70). In the clinical use of cell‐based therapeutics, injectable solutions can affect the morphology, immunophenotypic profile, and viability of cells before delivery and their survival after injection. In this sense, preparing a cell suspension that maintains the quality of aDC1s is essential to ensure effective immunotherapy. In the present study, monocytes were differentiated into aDC1s in the presence of IL‐4 and GM‐CSF. On day 5, the cells were matured by the addition of a cytokine cocktail consisting of IFN‐α, IFN‐γ, IL‐1β, TNF‐α, and Poly I:C. After 48 hr, mature aDC1s were harvested and suspended in two different solutions: normal saline and Ringer's lactate. The maintenance of cells in suspension was evaluated after 4, 6, and 8 hr of storage. Cell viability, immunophenotyping, and apoptosis analyses were performed by flow cytometry. Cellular morphology was observed by electron microscopy, and the production of IL‐12p70 by aDC1s was evaluated by ELISA. Background: Animal intubation is necessary in painful surgery procedures in order to maintain general anaesthesia and analgesia. In swine, orotracheal intubation is difficult or impossible; all possible measures to improve it need to be explored. Methods: Two groups of a total of 20 clinically healthy local mixed breed (Sus scrofa domesticus) premedicated swine underwent intubation. The animals were randomly divided into two groups, one using atropine sulphate (A) and one using saline solution (N), prior to endotracheal intubation. Premedication started with intramuscular injection of xylazine, ketamine and fentanyl. Intubation was performed after induction with thiopental sodium administered intravenously with atropine sulphate or saline solution. Larynxes were photographed and filmed and coded images and videos were sent to investigators for evaluation. The magnesium alloy ZK60 is a promising candidate as a material for biodegradable implants. One of the most important factors for biodegradable implants is the modification of their corrosion behavior to match the requirements for the healing bone or tissue. The corrosion behavior can be influenced by different factors, among them the grain size, which can be changed by severe plastic deformation processes such as High Pressure Torsion Extrusion (HPTE). This study focuses on the corrosion behavior of samples of pure magnesium and ZK60 before and after HPTE, and the influence of the microstructure on the corrosion activity. The samples are subjected to immersion tests in phosphate buffered saline solution (PBS). The corrosion activity is defined by the emerging hydrogen volume from the corrosion process which is collected and by subsequently observing the resulting sample surfaces. The findings of this study suggest that pure magnesium shows lower corrosion activities than ZK60 and that HPTE processing leads to higher corrosion activities in PBS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Given the noteworthy implications of alcohol consumption and its association with male infertility, there has been a notable focus on investigating natural alternatives to mitigate its adverse effects. Thus, this study was conducted to assess the potential protective effect of phycocyanin extract derived from the blue algae Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis against ethanol-induced oxidative stress, disturbances in testicular morphology, and alterations in sperm production. Methods: Male rats were divided into four groups (five rats each): the control group received a saline solution, the ethanol exposed group (EtOH) was subjected to intraperitoneal injections of 10 mL/kg of ethanol solution at a concentration of 38% (v/v), the phycocyanin alone treated group (P) received oral administration of phycocyanin at a dosage of 50 mg/kg, and the phycocyanin-cotreated group (PE) was given oral phycocyanin followed by ethanol injections. All treatments were administered over a period of 14 days. Results: Our findings demonstrated that ethanol exposure induced reproductive toxicity, characterized by reduced sperm production and viability, alterations in testicular weight and morphology, increased lipid peroxidation levels, and elevated oxidative enzyme activity. In addition, the ethanol-intoxicated group showed perturbations in serum biochemical parameters. However, the simultaneous exposure to ethanol and phycocyanin exhibited a counteractive effect against ethanol toxicity. Conclusion: The results showed that supplementation of phycocyanin prevented oxidative and testicular morphological damage-induced by ethanol and maintained normal sperm production, and viability. Brain death (BD) compromises the viability of the lung for donation. Hypertonic saline solution (HSS) induces rapid intravascular volume expansion and immunomodulatory action. We investigated its role in ventilatory mechanics (VMs) and in the inflammatory activity of the lungs of rats subjected to BD. Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control, n = 10: intact rats subjected to extraction of the heart–lung block; BD, n = 8 (BD): rats treated with isotonic saline solution (4 mL/kg) immediately after BD; hypertonic saline 0 h, n = 9 (Hip.0′): rats treated with HSS (4 mL/kg) immediately after BD; and hypertonic saline 1 h, n = 9 (Hip.60′), rats treated with HSS (4 mL/kg) 60 min after BD. The hemodynamic characteristics, gas exchange, VMs, inflammatory mediators, and histopathological evaluation of the lung were evaluated over 240 min of BD. In VMs, we observed increased airway resistance, tissue resistance, tissue elastance, and respiratory system compliance in the BD group (P < 0.037), while the treated groups showed no impairment over time (P > 0.05). In the histological analysis, the BD group showed a greater area of perivascular edema and a higher neutrophil count than the control group and the Hip.60′ group (P < 0.05). Treatment with HSS was effective in preventing changes in the elastic and resistive pulmonary components, keeping them at baseline levels. Objectives: Based on different physicochemical properties, common submucosal injection solutions could be classified into three categories: normal saline solution (NS), hypertonic solution (HS), and viscous solution (VS). We compared the efficacy and safety of various categories of solutions in this network meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to identify the optimal submucosal injection fluid. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched for RCTs that compared the efficacy and safety of NS, HS, and VS during endoscopic resection for gastrointestinal (GI) mucosal lesions. Pairwise and network analyses were conducted to determine the ranking of different fluids. Results: Thirteen RCTs were included in the final analysis with 1637 patients (1639 lesions). HS outperformed NS in rates of en bloc (pooled relative risk [RR] 1.50; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.10–1.90), overall bleeding (pooled odds ratio [OR] 0.33; 95% CI 0.10–0.88; lesions >10 mm OR 4.65 × 10−2; 95% CI 1.10 × 10−3–0.46), and intraoperative bleeding (lesions >10 mm OR 7.10 × 10−6; 95% CI 4.30 × 10−18–0.26). HS showed the highest probability of ranking first in each outcome except for the volume of injection. Although VS was superior to NS in rates of en bloc, overall, and intraoperative bleeding in the lesions >10 mm subgroup, and required less fluid in pooled analysis, it ranked last in cost of submucosal injection solution. Conclusions: Both HS and VS were superior to NS in comparisons of efficacy and safety. Considering the better performance and potentially low cost, HS might be an optimal choice during gastrointestinal endoscopic resection, especially for colorectal endoscopic mucosal resection. Our aim is to investigate the effects of the submucoperichondrial application of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) on nasal mucosal healing after septoplasty surgery. This prospective randomized observational study was conducted between July 2019 and February 2021, with 40 patients aged 18–60 years who underwent closed the only septoplasty operation for similar septal deviations. Patient divided into two group; 21 patients were placed in PRP group to which PRP was applied on all mucosal surface and submucoperichondrial area of septum and 19 patients were placed in control group to which saline solution was applied on same regions. Nasal obstruction score, mucociliary clearance time, presence of nasal crusting, and bleeding time were evaluated on 5th, 10th, 15th day after surgery and compared between groups. Intranasal crusting on day 10 was found to be lower in the PRP group (n :13 68.4 %) than control group (n :7 33.3 %) with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.028). The nasal obstruction score on day 10 and 15 were found to be lower in the PRP group (3,33 ± 2,75, 2,07 ± 2,20) (than the control group (5,44 ± 2,26, 3,37 ± 1,92) with a statistically significant difference (p = 0,003, p = 0,009). The mucociliary clearance rate was found to be higher and the bleeding time was found to be lower in the PRP group, but a statistically significant difference was not observed. Negative pressure wound therapy with instillation and dwell time (NPWTi-d) is increasingly used for a diverse range of wounds. Meanwhile, the topical wound irrigation solution consisting of polyhexamethylene biguanide and betaine (PHMB-B) has shown efficacy in managing wound infections. However, the effectiveness of this solution as a topical instillation solution for NPWTi-d in patients with diabetic foot infections (DFIs) has not been thoroughly studied. The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the impact of using PHMB-B as the instillation solution during NPWTi-d on reducing bioburden and improving clinical outcomes in patients with DFIs. Between January 2017 and December 2022, a series of patients with DFIs received treatment with NPWTi-d, using either PHMB-B or normal saline as the instillation solution. Data collected retrospectively included demographic information, baseline wound characteristics, and treatment outcomes. The study included 61 patients in the PHMB-B group and 73 patients in the normal saline group, all diagnosed with DFIs. In comparison to patients treated with normal saline, patients with PHMB-B exhibited no significant differences in terms of wound bed preparation time (P = 0.5034), length of hospital stay (P = 0.6783), NPWTi-d application times (P = 0.1458), duration of systematic antimicrobial administration (P = 0.3567), or overall cost of hospitalization (P = 0.6713). The findings of the study suggest that the use of either PHMB-B or normal saline as an instillation solution in NPWTi-d for DFIs shows promise and effectiveness, yet no clinical distinction was observed between the two solutions. Surgical ASTM F139 stainless steel is used for temporary fixtures in the biomedical field. Tribocorrosion is a major concern in this application. The aim of the present work was to study the interplay between tribocorrosion behavior and the surface chemistry of the ASTM F139 stainless steel in phosphate-buffered saline solution (PBS). Sliding wear tests were conducted against alumina balls at different electrochemical potentials: open circuit potential (OCP), cathodic potential (−100 mV versus the OCP), and anodic potentials (+200 mVAg/AgCl and +700 mVAg/AgCl). The normal load was 20 N. The wear volume was estimated based on micrographs obtained from the wear tracks using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Moreover, the wear tracks were also examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface chemistry of the ASTM F139 specimens was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The wear volume was dependent on the electrochemical potential, being maximized at +700 mVAg/AgCl. Delamination areas and grooves were observed in the wear tracks. Detailed assessment of the surface chemistry inside the wear tracks allowed identification of the main chemical species and their relative quantities, thus enabling correlation of the passive film composition with the observed tribocorrosion behavior. African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a highly pathogenic and rapidly disseminated virus with strong viability in the environment, suggesting the importance of environmental detection for prevention and control in all the pig industry. However, the detection results of environmental swabs cannot always reflect the accurate status of viral pollution, leading to persistent ASFV environmental contamination. In this study, we developed an ASFV eluant with higher environmental ASFV detection efficiency relative to 0.85% saline solution, which obtains the patent certificate issued by the China Intellectual Property Office (patent number:202010976050.9). qPCR analysis showed that in the environmental swab samples, the number of viral copies was 100 times higher for the ASFV eluant treatment than the traditional eluant treatment (0.85% saline solution). And besides, the high sensitivity of the ASFV eluant had be verified in a slaughterhouse environmental sampling detection. In soil samples, the ASFV eluent showed the same extraction effect as the TIANamp Soil DNA Kit, in contrast to no extraction effect for 0.85% saline solution. Simultaneously, this eluent could protect ASFV from degradation and allow the transportation of samples at ambient temperature without refrigeration. In clinical practice, we monitored the environmental contamination condition of the ASFV in a large-scale pig farm. The results shown that the ASFV load decreased after every disinfection in environment. This study provides an effective solution for surveilling the potential threat of ASFV in environment. Recent literature suggests that the withdrawal of remifentanil (RF) infusion can be associated with hyperalgesia in clinical and nonclinical settings. We performed a systematic review and a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials with cross-over design, to assess the effect of discontinuing RF infusion on pain intensity and areas of hyperalgesia and allodynia in healthy volunteers. Nine studies were included. The intervention treatment consisted in RF infusion that was compared with placebo (saline solution). The primary outcome was pain intensity assessment at 30 ± 15 minutes after RF or placebo discontinuation, assessed by any pain scale and using any quantitative sensory testing. Moreover, postwithdrawal pain scores were compared with baseline scores in each treatment. Secondary outcomes included the areas (% of basal values) of hyperalgesia and allodynia. Subjects during RF treatment reported higher pain scores after discontinuation than during treatment with placebo [standardized mean difference (SMD): 0.50, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.03-0.97; P = 0.04, I² = 71%]. A significant decrease in pain scores, compared with baseline values, was found in the placebo treatment (SMD: -0.87, 95% CI: -1.61 to -0.13; P = 0.02, I² = 87%), but not in the RF treatment (SMD: -0.28, 95% CI: -1.18 to 0.62; P = 0.54, I² = 91%). The area of hyperalgesia was larger after RF withdrawal (SMD: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.27-0.84; P = 0.001; I² = 0%). The area of allodynia did not vary between treatments. These findings suggest that the withdrawal of RF induces a mild but nonclinically relevant degree of hyperalgesia in HVs, likely linked to a reduced pain threshold. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
