The aim of this paper is to study the mechanical behavior of corrugated board boxes, focusing attention on the strength that the boxes are able to offer in compression under stacking conditions. A preliminary design of the corrugated cardboard structures starting from the definition of each individual layer, namely the outer liners and the innermost flute, was carried out. For this purpose, three distinct types of corrugated board structures that include flutes with different characteristics, namely the high wave (C), the medium wave (B), and even the micro-wave (E), were comparatively evaluated. More specifically, the comparison is able to show the potential of the micro-wave which would eventually allow a significant saving of cellulose in the fabrication process of the boxes, thus reducing the manufacturing costs and causing a lower environmental footprint. First, experimental tests were carried out to determine the mechanical properties of the different layers of the corrugated board structures. Tensile tests were performed on samples extracted from the paper reels used as base material for the manufacturing of the liners and flutes. Instead, the edge crush test (ECT) and box compression test (BCT) were directly performed on the corrugated cardboard structures. Secondly, a parametric finite element (FE) model to allow, on a comparative basis, the study of the mechanical response of the three different types of corrugated cardboard structures was developed. Lastly, a comparison between the available experimental results and the outputs of the FE model was carried out, with the same model being also adapted to evaluate additional structures where the E micro-wave was usefully combined with the B or C wave in a double-wave configuration. Abstract: The Marmolada platform is characterized by striking globose masses (“evinosponges”), arranged in concentric bands, of fibrous calcite cements ranging in size from centimeters to several decimeters. The lithogenetic importance of these peculiar cements has been recognized in many Middle Triassic buildups of the Western Tethys. EDS microanalyses revealed that these fibrous cements contain 1–3 mol% of Mg and detectable amounts of Sr, over 1000 ppm, sometimes exceeding 10,000 ppm. The strontium geochemical signature in neomorphic calcite could reflect the replacement of an aragonitic carbonate precursor. The boundaries between the fibrous calcite bands are marked by alignments of microcrystalline aggregates of fluorapatite and/or dolomite. The presence of fluorapatite may indicate a depositional microenvironment eutrophic or rich in microbial communities. Epifluorescence analyses showed bright bands alternated to dark ones, confirming that organic matter remains occur within the studied cements and could have played a significant role in supporting the widespread syndepositional cementation. High magnification SEM observations on bright epifluorescent bands showed the presence of widespread, more or less spherical bodies ranging in size 100–300 nm. During the Late Miocene, the marginal areas of the Mediterranean Basin were characterized by the development of mixed siliciclastic-carbonate ramps. This paper deals with a temperate siliciclastic-carbonate ramp (late Tortonian-early Messinian in age) which crops out in the Capo Vaticano area, Southern Apennines (Italy). Carbonate components are mainly represented by calcitic skeletal fragments of coralline red algae, bryozoans, bivalves, and larger foraminifera, whereas corals, brachiopods, echinoderms, and planktonic foraminifera are subordinate. In the studied ramp, the depositional geometries of the main unit, the 'Sabbie gialle ad Heterostegina', show a gradual steepening from low/middle (dip about 2-5°) to steep slope settings (up to 25°). The microfacies observations, the quantitative analyses of the main biogenic components as well as the rhodolith shapes and growth forms allowed the differentiation between the middle and the outer ramp depositional setting and the refining of the stratigraphic framework. The middle ramp is characterized by coralline red algal debris packstone facies often associated with larger foraminiferal floatstone/packstone facies, while the outer ramp is characterized by rhodolith floatstone/rudstone facies. These facies pass basinward into typical open-marine deposits (planktonic foraminiferal facies). The taxonomic composition of the coralline red algal assemblage points to a temperate paleoclimate and emphasizes the Miocene Mediterranean phytogeographic patterns. The absence of non-skeletal grains (ooids and green algae), the paucity of Porites patch reefs, the rare occurrence of primary marine cementation, all confirm that the studied ramp was poorly lithified within a warm-temperate setting. The origin of fine-grained dolomite in peritidal rocks has been the subject of much debate recently and evidence is presented here for a microbial origin of this dolomite type in the Norian Dolomia Principale of northern Calabria (southern Italy). Microbial carbonates there consist of stromatolites, thrombolites, and aphanitic dolomites. High-relief thrombolites and stromatolites characterize sub-tidal facies, and low-relief and planar stromatolites, with local oncoids, typify the inter-supratidal facies. Skeletal remains are very rare in the latter, whereas a relatively rich biota of skeletal cyanophycea, red algae and foraminifera is present in the sub-tidal facies. Some 75% of the succession consists of fabric-preserving dolomite, especially within the microbial facies, whereas the rest is composed of coarse dolomite with little fabric preservation. Three end-members of dolomite replacement fabric are distinguished: type 1 and type 2, fabric retentive, with crystal size <5 and 5–60 μm, respectively; and type 3, fabric destructive, with larger crystals, from 60 to several hundred microns. In addition, there are dolomite cements, precipitated in the central parts of primary cavities during later diagenesis. Microbialite textures in stromatolites are generally composed of thin, dark micritic laminae of type 1 dolomite, alternating with thicker lighter-coloured laminae of the coarser type 2 dolomite. Thrombolites are composed of dark, micritic clotted fabrics with peloids, composed of type 1 dolomite, surrounded by coarser type 2 dolomite. Marine fibrous cement crusts are also present, now composed of type 2 dolomite. Scanning electron microscope observations of the organic-rich micritic laminae and clots of the inter-supratidal microbialites reveal the presence of spherical structures which are interpreted as mineralized bacterial remains. These probably derived from the fossilization of micron-sized coccoid bacteria and spheroidal–ovoidal nanometre-scale dwarf-type bacterial forms. Furthermore, there are traces of degraded organic matter, probably also of bacterial origin. The microbial dolomites were precipitated in a hypersaline environment, most likely through evaporative dolomitization, as suggested by the excess Ca in the dolomites, the small crystal size, and the positive δ18O values. The occurrence of fossilized bacteria and organic matter in the fabric-preserving dolomite of the microbialites could indicate an involvement of bacteria and organic matter degradation in the precipitation of syn-sedimentary dolomite. The main goal of the paper is the reconstruction of a Middle Triassic buildup cropping out in the central part of the Southern Apennines. Middle Triassic reefs of the western Tethys realm are well known in the Northern and Southern Alps. In contrast, few studies of the Anisian–Ladinian carbonate platforms of the southern Apennines are available, due to the diagenetic alteration and tectonic disruption that hinder their paleoenvironmental and stratigraphic reconstruction. In an attempt to fill this gap, and to improve the knowledge on the Anisian–Ladinian carbonates of central Mediterranean area, this research is focused on a carbonate buildup cropping out in the "La Cerchiara" area, Sasso di Castalda (Basilicata, Southern Italy). The buildup, affected by intense tectonic deformation associated with the development of the Apennine thrust and fold belt, was studied using a statistical evaluation of the quantitative microfacies data. The research enabled a reconstruction of the original stratigraphic relationships of the various buildup fragments. A positive linear regression between the sample positions vs the percentage of autochthonous carbonates indicates an increase of the autochthons carbonate toward the top of the succession. The allochthonous fabrics (packstone/wackestone) at the base of the section (Unit IIIa) pass gradually upward into autochthonous (boundstones) facies (Units IIIb, I), consisting of microbialites (clotted peloidal micrite, microbial-derived laminae, and aphanitic micrite), microproblematica and cyanobacterial crusts, with few encrusting skeletal organisms. Statistical data suggest that units IIIa, IIIb, and I are in stratigraphic order while unit II appears to have been moved by tectonic dislocation from its original position at the base of the succession. The absence of metazoan reef framework, and the richness of micro-encrusters, autochthonous micrite and synsedimentary cements, suggest a mud-mound style of growth for the carbonate bodies of the Southern Apennine during the Anisian. Biotic crusts occurring in the Early Pleistocene Rumena Cave, in NW Sicily, have been analyzed from a geomicrobiological point of view. The crusts consist largely of scleractinians and of subordinate bryozoans and serpuloideans, all typical of submarine cave biota. Encrustations document a blind cave in a shadowed setting, or possibly below the fair weather swell zone. Autochthonous and, subordinately, detrital fractions were observed within the skeletal framework of biotic crusts. The syndepositional lithified fraction occurs mainly as very fine-grained laminations. Clotted peloidal and aphanitic (structureless) textures occur in the micrites as well. Autochthonous micrite is always associated with a significant amount of organic matter remains. In caves from the Plemmirio area in SE Sicily, the autochthonous microbial micrite, occurring in the bioconstructions, contains bacterial lipid biomarkers, including abundant compounds derived from sulfate-reducing bacteria. It is likely that a similar microbial mediation was involved in the formation of the autochthonous micrite present in the biotic crusts of the Rumena Cave. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biostalactites formed by metazoan-microbialite associations from three submerged marine caves in the Plemmirio Peninsula (south of Syracuse, Ionian Sea) are randomly distributed and show different sizes and morphologies, as well as variations in surface roughness/smoothness. The biostalactites consist of crusts a few centimeters thick of small serpulids and other metazoans, associated with fine-grained carbonate; the larger ones often include a nucleus of serpulid tubes (Protula). The metazoans include mainly serpuloideans, sponges, bryozoans and foraminifers but microbial carbonates are also significant components. The composition of both the living communities and thanatocoenoses on the outer surfaces, as well as the composition and fabric of the internal framework, were analysed and used to reconstruct the history of the caves. All of the identified sessile faunas mainly consist of cryptic and sciaphilic dwellers that reflect cave conditions and their variations through time. The distribution pattern, composition and abundance of the present-day dwellers largely depend on the degree of roughness of the biostalactite surfaces and their positions within the caves. It has been suggested that the Protula specimens in the nuclei represent pioneer populations that formed aggregates during the early cave colonization phase, in response to relatively high food supply from seawater inflow and intruding continental waters. By contrast, the outer metazoan- microbialite carbonates reflect more confined conditions in the caves caused by Holocene sea-level rises. Hypotheses are proposed for biostalactite growth, taking into account information about the growth rates of some constituents, and evidence of dissolution effects. Similarities and differences between these biostalactites and other Holocene deposits previously described from submarine caves in the Mediterranean Sea and in tropical reefs are discussed. Abstract: In upcoming years several space missions will investigate the habitability of Mars and the possibility of extinct or extant life on the planet. In previous laboratory works we have investigated the infrared spectral modifications induced by thermal processing on different carbonate samples, in the form of recent shells and fossils of different ages, whose biogenic origin is indisputable. The goal was to develop a method able to discriminate biogenic carbonate samples from their abiogenic counterparts. The method has been successfully applied to microbialites, i.e. bio-induced microcrystalline carbonate deposits, and particularly to stromatolites, the laminated fabric of microbialites, some of which can be ascribed among the oldest traces of biological activity known on Earth. In this work we show that, by applying our method to different parts of the same carbonate rock, we are able to discriminate the presence, nature and biogenicity of various micrite types (i.e. detrital vs autochthonous) and to distinguish them from the skeletal grains. To test our methodology we preliminarily used the epifluorescence technique to select on polished samples, skeletal grains, autochthonous and allochthonous micrites, each one characterized by different organic matter content. The results on the various components show that, applying the infrared spectral modifications induced by thermal processing, it is possible to determine the degree of biogenicity of the different carbonate samples. The results are of valuable importance since such carbonates are linked to primitive living organisms that can be considered as good analogues for putative Martian life forms. Abstract: Geochemical signatures and carbonate microfacies highlight contrasts between two distinctive mid–late Triassic reef communities in the Dolomite Alps, Italy. In the first community, sponges, bryozoans, calcified cyanobacteria and problematic organisms (Archaeolithoporella, Shamovella), together with a variety of micritic fabrics, formed compact reefs in high energy shallow-water at the margins of high-rise Ladinian–Carnian carbonate platforms. Debris from these margins created steep foreslopes, and some large blocks of the allochthonous material (Wengen–Cassian formations, Cipit Boulders) were buried in basinal shales that protected them from subsequent alteration and regional dolomitization. In the second and slightly younger community, small Carnian patch reefs (Heiligkreuz Formation, Alpe di Specie) developed in quieter shallow water, where they too were protected against alteration by enclosing shales. They were constructed mainly by scleractinian corals, sponges and red algae, and contain relatively large framework cavities with clotted-peloidal micrite. These early examples of coralgal reefs have broad similarities to present-day examples, whereas the community represented by the Cipit Boulders has more in common with Late Permian reefs. Both bioconstructions preserve primary microfabrics and biomarkers. The Cipit Boulder samples contain bacterial, mainly cyanobacterial biomarkers, lack specific molecules typical of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), and have Rare Earth Element (REE) values indicative of oxic conditions. These signatures are consistent with their original high-energy platform margin location, compact structure, and presence of calcified cyanobacteria such as Cladogirvanella and Girvanella. In contrast, the coralgal patch reefs contain SRB biomarkers, lack specific molecules typical of cyanobacteria, and have REE values indicative of sub-oxic conditions. These signatures are consistent with their lower energy depositional conditions and well-developed skeletal framework that created protected low-oxygen micro-habitats. The SRB biomarkers can be linked to the associated clotted-peloidal fabrics which resemble those commonly present in younger coral-reef frameworks. These details of redox conditions and bacterial processes underscore the important biotic, structural and environmental changes that affected shallow marine reefs during the Triassic. Abstract: The Lower Devonian Kess-Kess mounds of the Hamar Laghdad Ridge, SE Morocco, are one of the most spectacular carbonate buildups of the world. The differential erosion highlighted their original shapes and the relationships with associated beds. The origin of these buildups is still under debate and the most consistent hypothesis is related to submarine hydrothermal vents in which bacteria and/or archaea played a prominent role in the carbonate biomineralization. The research was focused on micro-nanomorphology and biogeochemistry of the very fine dark and white wrinkled laminated microbialites to investigate the traces of prokaryotic metabolic activity, which possibly induced their precipitation. Epifluorescence observations put in evidence a high organic matter content mainly in the dark laminae. The geochemical characterization of extracted organic matter was performed through the functional group analyses by FT-IR Spectroscopy. FT-IR parameters indicate a marine origin and low thermal evolution for these organic compounds. The organic matter, which is characterized by the presence of stretching νCons attributable to alkene and/or unsaturated carboxylic acids, is likely to have been synthesized by bacteria and/or archaea communities. The site of Cessaniti (Vibo Valentia, Italy) has been well known since the 19th century for the richness and good preservation of its Miocene fauna and flora. The sedimentary succession of the site represents a paralic system that evolved toward an open-marine environment recording the Tortonian transgression. The fossil assemblage contains rich invertebrate (corals, bivalves, gastropods, brachiopods, echinoids, benthic and planktonic foraminifers) and vertebrate faunas (proboscideans, rhinoceroses, giraffids, bovids, sirenids, marine turtles, and fish remains). The fossils recovered at the Cessaniti site have a relevant role in phylogenetic studies and paleogeographic reconstructions of Late Miocene environments of the southern Italy. This research is focused on the microstructure and preservation state of the fossil bones. Samples of Metaxytherium sp . bones have been analyzed to understand the diagenetic profile of the bone assemblages that characterizes the taphonomic history of the Cessaniti site. The analyses provided a comprehensive account of how bone mineral (bioapatite) has been altered and demonstrated that the post-burial processes did not significantly affect the micromorphological and biogeochemical features of the bones. The excellent preservation state of the bones strengthens the importance of the Cessaniti site for studies of the Mediterranean Miocene vertebrate fauna. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following introduction of the term 'nummulite bank', there has been debate regarding interpretation of these types of deposits as autochthonous (automicrite) or allochthonous (detrital micrite). These banks are made up of large foraminifera and ill-defined fine-grained components. The fine-grained components consist mainly of micrites. The recognition of automicrite has deep implications for the synsedimentary cementation and stabilization of the bank. In order to distinguish between automicrite and detrital micrite, the nanomorphology, geochemistry and organic matter remains in the microfacies of a nummulite bank in the Middle Eocene of Monte Saraceno (Gargano, Southern Italy) were analysed. Optical and scanning electron microscope investigations showed that the micrites have been recrystallized to aggrading microsparite. Epifluorescence observations on selected micrite/microsparite areas with peloidal texture revealed the presence of organic matter. Scanning electron microscope analyses on epifluorescent micrites showed that the microbial peloids have smaller crystal sizes than those in organic matter-depleted areas. The geochemical characterization of extracted organic matter, performed through the functional group analyses by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, shows strong prevalence of the aromatic fraction over the aliphatic and carboxylic ones. These characteristics of organic compounds indicate both their thermal maturation and their likely derivation from degradation of bacterial communities. The local presence of peloidal anti-gravity textures, bright epifluorescence and organic molecules in clotted peloidal areas suggest that the metabolic activity of microbial communities could have induced precipitation of these micrites and, consequently, the syndepositional cementation of the nummulite bank. The Calcare di Base (CdB), a carbonate unit deposited at the base of the evaporitic succession, is a key to understanding the paleoenvironmental conditions before the Messinian Salinity Crisis. The concentration of rare earth elements and yttrium (REE + Y) in the CdB, cropping out in the Rossano Basin, were measured with inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The CdB shows coherent and reliable REE + Y patterns with typical characteristics of microbial carbonates: (1) enrichment in heavy REE (NdSN/YbSN = 0.52, SD = 0.09), (2) negative Ce and positive La anomalies, (3) marine Y/Ho ratios (57.08, SD = 3.07), (4) slightly positive Gd anomalies, and (5) tetrad effect especially in the La–Ce–Pr–Nd, and [Pm]–Sm–Eu–Gd tetrads. These features suggest that the CdB incorporated REEs in equilibrium with oxygenated seawater. They also corroborate the depositional model of Guido et al. in Palaeogeogr Palaeoclimatol Palaeoecol 255:265–283, () that maintains carbonatogenesis occurred via heterotrophic microbial activity. The REE + Y signatures of the CdB support the interpretation that these sediments were deposited in normal marine condition and cannot belong to the evaporite succession. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A multidisciplinary study has been carried out on the Late Miocene (Messinian) Calcare di Base Formation in northern Calabria, Italy, with the aim of understanding the depositional conditions of these enigmatic carbonate sediments that have been interpreted as evaporitic or diagenetic limestone. The research has been developed through sedimentological (microfacies), organic petrography and geochemical analyses (palynofacies, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry). The carbonates studied preserve their original mineralogy (aragonite) and microstructure. The prevailing microfacies consists of clotted peloidal micrite with antigravitative fabric. Larger and darker cylindrical–subcylindrical micritic grains, attributable to faecal pellets, are more or less randomly dispersed in the peloidal micrite. The faecal pellets have been ascribed to copepods because zooclasts of these arthropods were observed in the palynofacies. Bright epifluorescence characterizes the faecal pellets and peloidal micrite, indicating their high content of organic matter. Detrital and stromatolitic microfacies occur rarely (around a few percent). The detrital microfacies is characterized by silt-sized grains organized in thin, sometimes bioturbated, graded laminae. The stromatolitic microfacies shows planar to gently curved/wrinkled laminae organized in dark and light couplets. The associated sedimentary organic matter shows low maturity, and preserves the original signatures of the source organisms. Rock-Eval pyrolysis revealed a transitional composition between Type II and Type III kerogen, suggesting a mixture of marine and terrigenous organic matter input. The molecular biogeochemical data indicate three main biological signatures: algae, bacteria and higher plants. Organic markers together with sedimentary evidence indicate a marine depositional scenario influenced by freshwater input rather than evaporitic concentration. We conclude that the most probable bacterial process involved in carbonate precipitation of the Calcare di Base, considering the freshwater input and consequent probable enrichment in organic matter and Ca2+ ions, is ammonification of amino-acids in aerobic conditions.
