Torsional waves as one of the types of nonlinear elastic cylindrical displacement waves are analyzed theoretically within the framework of the five-constant Murnaghan model. The analysis is based on tools of the nonlinear theory of elasticity. Two variants of new nonlinear wave equations for torsional waves are derived taking into account cubicallyt nonlinear terms. The difference between the variants is in the different ways of allowing for the nonlinearities in the wave equation. The simpler variant is considered, and the evolution of torsional waves is analyzed theoretically and numerically. Special attention is paid to the boundary conditions and the transcendent equation classical for torsional waves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
