Recruitment dynamics of the Gulf of Riga herring stock: density-dependent and environmental effects. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 67: 1914–1920.The Gulf of Riga and open-sea stocks of the Baltic herring have displayed remarkably consistent inverse recruitment and stock development patterns since the 1970s: the open-sea stocks steadily declined, whereas the Gulf stock increased rapidly in the early 1990s, reaching a peak abundance in the early 2000s and exceeding the level of the 1970s by a factor of 2–3. The increase was accompanied by a decline in the mean weight-at-age and the condition factor. The estimated decline (by 30–40%) in the average annual consumption rate per individual and changes observed in the zooplankton community suggest that density-dependent effects may have increased since the 1970s. The current period of high stock sizes is also characterized by greater recruitment variability. Historical fecundity investigations have established that the average egg production per individual has decreased in all age groups by 20–50%, along with a decrease in mean weight and condition. Yet, the effect on recruitment has been low so far, because lower fecundity has been compensated by the greater abundance and population fecundity has been maintained at the original level. Age reading is a major source of uncertainty in the assessments of fish stocks. The paper presents preliminary results of alternative approaches to estimating the age (year-class) structure of Baltic flounder, Platichthys flesus. The size structure of catches and the weight distribution of otoliths were analysed using Bhattacharya.s method to distinguish between different cohorts (year classes). The traditional counting of annual growth zones on otoliths yielded the greatest number of age groups (12). Age determination by Bhattacharya.s analysis of otolith weight frequencies enabled to distinguish between 7 cohorts. Bhattacharya.s analysis of length frequencies of the same material allowed distinguishing 5 or 6 different groups. Theoretical weight distributions of otoliths, calculated by Bhattacharya.s method for age groups 1 and 6, were not significantly different from the corresponding distributions of weights of otoliths obtained by the method of counting annual rings. The Baltic herring is one of the key elements of the pelagic ecosystem of the Baltic Sea, being of the most important commercial species of the sea. The structure and dynamics of herring populations (stocks) have been assessed and managed on international level since 1970s. Since 1990, all local herring populations have been combined and assessed as one stock (Central Baltic Herring in Sub-divisions 25–29 and 32). However, the continuously decreasing trend in stock biomass throughout almost 30-years period of observations indicates the failure of the stock management implementation of the scientific advice. The separate assessments of different stocks and results of hydro-acoustic surveys of different sub-units (herring in Sub-divisions 25–27, Sub-divisions 28, 29 and 32 and the Gulf of Riga herring) have revealed rather different situation within combined assessment unit: e.g. fishing mortality of the Gulf of Riga herring has decreased while a sharp increase in mortality is observed in the herring stocks of the North-eastern Baltic (Sub-divisions 28, 29 and 32). At the same time stock abundance and biomass of the Gulf of Riga herring have increased to record high in early 2000s allowing also higher catches. It is concluded that only separate analytical assessment of local populations combined with regular acoustical surveys and following different protection measures have proved to be a successful way in managing the herring stocks. Joint assessment and management of several populations with different structure and dynamics as one combined stock do not allow revealing the real situation and trends in its parts. Predator–prey interactions are a primary structuring force in marine foodwebs and they play an important role in the dynamics of both marine fish populations and their prey. We investigated the individual and spatial patterns in the feeding of two dominant zooplanktivorous clupeids—herring Clupea harengus membras and sprat Sprattus sprattus —in the Baltic Sea in summer, by means of a taxonomic analysis of stomach content. Both species consumed predominantly the small-sized copepods (Temora longicornis, Eurytemora affinis, and Acartia spp.). E. affinis and T. longicornis were generally positively selected by both species. Centropages hamatus was selected only by sprat. With the exception of Pleopis / Podon spp. in the case of small sprat, the remaining prey, i.e. the zooplankton taxa that were found in fish stomachs, were consumed at similar proportions as they occurred in zooplankton. Stomach fullness of fish increased with the increasing proportions of prey in the zooplankton community. The share of empty stomachs was lower for sprat, and among smaller fish in both species. Pairwise dietary overlap between fish decreased when zooplankton diversity increased. Dietary overlap was also lowest among the individuals of sprat, probably due to the wider diet spectrum and diversity of stomach content compared to herring. Our results point to high interspecific competition, where sprat seems to be more successful than herring in finding and consuming prey, and therefore may have an advantage over herring when the zooplankton community is dominated by small-sized taxa. The Gulf of Riga stock of Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras L.) has been maintained through several management tools. One such tool is the restriction of vessels' main engine power (<221 kW). This restriction was implemented in the early 1990s and is based on the vessel types available in the area and on the assumption that the gear size used in trawl fishery depends on the vessel size (power). In the current study, we compared vessels with different engine powers using the same gears currently allowed in the gulf, to identify whether vessel power had any relation to catch structure. The results showed that engine power did not explain the differences in catch structure, which were more dependent on season and depth of water. Easing the power restriction of the trawl vessels in the Gulf of Riga will most likely not have a major negative impact on the sustainable management of the herring population. We used the longest available weight-at-age (WAA) time series (from 1950 to 1999) for Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras L.) in the Gulf of Finland to investigate which environmental factors affect Baltic herring growth. The relationships among WAAs, annual weight increments, and growth rates for different herring year classes, water salinity, temperature, zooplankton abundance, and biomass, as well as stock sizes of herring, sprat, and cod, were evaluated. Our results showed that in the Gulf of Finland, herring weight and growth rate correlated positively with salinity, and WAA correlated positively with the abundance of the marine zooplankton species Pseudocalanus minutus elongatus. A density-dependent mechanism was not likely to explain the changes in herring WAA in the Gulf of Finland, because no significant correlation between herring WAAs and herring abundance could be found. Instead, the zooplankton community structure changed during the research period, which supports the theory of bottom-up controlling mechanism. Age of fish at maturation depends on the species and environmental factors but, in general, investment in growth is prioritized until the first sexual maturity, after which a considerable and increasing proportion of resources are used for reproduction. The present study summarizes for the first the key elements of the maturation of European smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) young of the year (YoY) in the North-eastern Gulf of Riga (the Baltic Sea). Prior to the changes in climatic conditions and collapse of smelt fishery in the 1990s in the Gulf of Riga, smelt attained sexual maturity at the age of 3–4 years. We found a substantial share (22%) of YoY smelt with maturing gonads after the collapse of the smelt fisheries. Maturing individuals had a significantly higher weight, length and condition factor than immature YOY, indicating the importance of individual growth rates in the maturation process. The proportion of maturing YoY individuals increased with fish size. We discuss the factors behind prioritizing reproduction overgrowth in early life and its implications for the smelt population dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fish samples of Baltic herring, sprat, flounder, perch, salmon, and river lamprey were collected from the Gulf of Finland in 2013 and 2014 with the aim to get an overview of the occurrence of pollutants in fish caught in Estonian waters. The content of non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (ndl PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), organic tin (OT) and perfluorocompounds (PFAS) are examined and discussed in the study. The results revealed that potentially higher content of organo-tin compounds, perfluorocompounds and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in Baltic herring, salmon and river lamprey may cause concern regarding human exposure. Fisheries have had major negative impacts on marine ecosystems, and effective fisheries management and governance are needed to achieve sustainable fisheries, biodiversity conservation goals and thus good ecosystem status. To date, the IndiSeas programme (Indicators for the Seas) has focussed on assessing the ecological impacts of fishing at the ecosystem scale using ecological indicators. Here, we explore fisheries 'Management Effectiveness' and 'Governance Quality' and relate this to ecosystem health and status. We developed a dedicated expert survey, focused at the ecosystem level, with a series of questions addressing aspects of management and governance, from an ecosystem-based perspective, using objective and evidence-based criteria. The survey was completed by ecosystem experts (managers and scientists) and results analysed using ranking and multivariate methods. Results were further examined for selected ecosystems, using expert knowledge, to explore the overall findings in greater depth. Higher scores for 'Management Effectiveness' and 'Governance Quality' were significantly and positively related to ecosystems with better ecological status. Key factors that point to success in delivering fisheries and conservation objectives were as follows: the use of reference points for management, frequent review of stock assessments, whether Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated ( IUU) catches were being accounted for and addressed, and the inclusion of stakeholders. Additionally, we found that the implementation of a long-term management plan, including economic and social dimensions of fisheries in exploited ecosystems, was a key factor in successful, sustainable fisheries management. Stock-based and ecosystem-based indicators are used to provide a new diagnosis of the fishing impact and environmental status of European seas. In the seven European marine ecosystems covering the Baltic and the North-east Atlantic, (i) trends in landings since 1950 were examined; (ii) syntheses of the status and trends in fish stocks were consolidated at the ecosystem level; and (iii) trends in ecosystem indicators based on landings and surveys were analysed. We show that yields began to decrease everywhere (except in the Baltic) from the mid-1970s, as a result of the over-exploitation of some major stocks. Fishermen adapted by increasing fishing effort and exploiting a wider part of the ecosystems. This was insufficient to compensate for the decrease in abundance of many stocks, and total landings have halved over the last 30 years. The highest fishing impact took place in the late 1990s, with a clear decrease in stock-based and ecosystem indicators. In particular, trophic-based indicators exhibited a continuous decreasing trend in almost all ecosystems. Over the past decade, a decrease in fishing pressure has been observed, the mean fishing mortality rate of assessed stocks being almost halved in all the considered ecosystems, but no clear recovery in the biomass and ecosystem indicators is yet apparent. In addition, the mean recruitment index was shown to decrease by around 50% in all ecosystems (except the Baltic). The eastern Baltic (EB) cod (Gadus morhua) stock was depleted and overexploited for decades until the mid-2000s, when fishing mortality rapidly declined and biomass started to increase, as shown by stock assessments. These positive developments were partly assigned to effective management measures, and the EB cod was considered one of the most successful stock recoveries in recent times. In contrast to this optimistic view, the analytical stock assessment failed in 2014, leaving the present stock status unclear. Deteriorated quality of some basic input data for stock assessment in combination with changes in environmental and ecological conditions has led to an unusual situation for cod in the Baltic Sea, which poses new challenges for stock assessment and management advice. A number of adverse developments such as low nutritional condition and disappearance of larger individuals indicate that the stock is in distress. In this study, we (i) summarize the knowledge of recent changes in cod biology and ecosystem conditions, (ii) describe the subsequent challenges for stock assessment, and (iii) highlight the key questions where answers are urgently needed to understand the present stock status and provide scientifically solid support for cod management in the Baltic Sea. The article discusses a study which linked the benthic invertebrate communities and the feeding diet of native founder, perch and the invasive round goby in a brackish water ecosystem like the Muuga Bay in the Baltic Sea. The fish feeding ecology concepts include the Lindeman trophodynamic model and the optimal foraging theory. With the bivalves Mytilus trossulus and Macoma Balthica as main ecosystem food, the study showed that food availability does not limit fish growth except for round goby.

Using ecological indicators to represent and compare the states of marine ecosystems. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 67: 717–731.Within the IndiSeas WG, the evaluation of exploited marine ecosystems has several steps, from simple binary categorization of ecosystems to a more-complex attempt to rank them and to evaluate their status using decision-tree analyses. With the intention of communicating scientific knowledge to the public and stakeholders, focus is on evaluating and comparing the status of exploited marine ecosystems using a set of six ecological indicators and a simple and transparent graphic representation of ecosystem state (pie charts). A question that arose was whether it was acceptable to compare different types of marine ecosystems using a generic set of indicators. To this end, an attempt is made to provide reference levels to which ecosystems can be objectively compared. Unacceptable thresholds for each indicator are determined based on ecological expertise derived from a questionnaire distributed to a group of scientific experts. Analysis of the questionnaires revealed no significant difference in the thresholds provided for different ecosystem types, suggesting that it was reasonable to compare states directly across different types of ecosystem using the set of indicators selected. Phytoplankton, mesozooplankton, mysids and fish larvae were studied during 15–29 annual cycles measured weekly to monthly in Pärnu Bay, the Gulf of Riga. The monthly variability of the biological data was related to temperature, ice conditions, salinity, influx of nutrients, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index, cloudiness and solar activity. Phytoplankton development was mainly a function of the NAO index. For the whole study period the abundance of zooplankton increased with increasing water temperature and solar activity. Significant correlations between phytoplankton and zooplankton densities were found until 1990. After the invasion of the predatory cladoceran Cercopagis pengoi in 1991, the zooplankton community was likely to be regulated by the introduced species rather than phytoplankton dynamics. The increased abundances of rotifers and copepods triggered the increase in mysid densities. The development of herring larvae was positively affected by the high density of copepods and rotifers but also by increased eutrophication. Until 1990 there was no significant relationship between the density of zooplankton and herring larvae. A negative relationship between the density of zooplankton and herring larvae in the 1990s suggests that the major shift in zooplankton community resulted in food limitation for herring larvae. The results indicated that (1) atmospheric processes in the northern Atlantic explain a large part of the interannual variation of the local phytoplankton stock, (2) trophic interactions control the development of pelagic communities at higher trophic levels, and (3) the introduction of an effective intermediate predator has repercussions for the whole pelagic food web in Pärnu Bay.
