Reviews the report `Problem Definition Process: A Guide to Research Strategies.'

The article discusses the decline in knowledge of and facility with alphabetical order in middle school children. It cites a middle school student who does not know how to look up a topic in an encyclopedia and is stuck at choosing the correct volume, using the last name to look up an individual, and using guide words at the tops of the pages. The author attributes the phenomenon to use of computer search engines, which do not require alphabetization. She states that understanding of alphabetical order and indexes places information in context so that one can judge relative importance of headings and observe frequency of letters, prefixes and suffixes. She says literacy is enhanced by use of dictionaries and encyclopedias and calls for including the activity in schools.
