Indonesia has abundant natural biomass resources, particularly from oil palm plantations that have not been used properly. One type of biomass is oil palm tree trunks that are no longer productive, or over 25 years of planting period. The goal of this research is to investigate the potential of palm oil trunk as a raw material for cofiring in drop tube furnace. Palm oil trunk divided into three parts: Upper Trunk (UT), Middle Trunk (MT), and Lower Trunk (LT) as test samples. Drop Tube Furnace (DTF) equipment conducted to identify combustion properties at 550 and 600 °C in the form of ash deposit and emission gas. Ash deposition is determined through physical observation, proximate testing, and ultimate analysis. As a form of real-time monitoring, the combustion gas is evaluated using a portable gas meter. In comparison to the MT and LT samples, the physical observation probe of the UT sample revealed significantly more corrosive deposits. At the measured temperature of 550 °C, 0.1719 gr, 0.1357 gr, and 0.0233 gr of ash were deposited on UT, MT, and LT samples, respectively. While ash deposit at 600 °C for UT, MT, and LT, was 0.1924, 0.1445, and 0.1904 gr, respectively. Furthermore, the observed combustion gases exhibit emission levels were below environmental safety standard. The high quantity of ash, and corrosion left on the probe, indicate that palm oil trunk wasn't promised as cofiring material. Indonesia, which is rich in plantations, has abundant biomass potential. Acacia and Mahogany wood are two biomasses that can be used as a coal substitution or co-firing in a Coal-Fired Power Plant (CFPP). The main objective of this study was to identify the combustion characteristic of Acacia and Mahogany biomass based on the prediction of slagging, fouling, and corrosion, ash fusion temperature (AFT) analysis, and ash deposit observations using a drop tube furnace (DTF) combustion test. The prepared biomass powder was characterized according to ASTM coal standards and tested on DTF with a probe temperature of 550 °C, representing the fouling area, and 600 °C, the slagging area. According to the calculations, the potential for slagging in Mahogany is higher than in Acacia. The fusibility index on Mahogany shows a high risk, while Acacia is medium risk. In addition, the composite index in Mahogany is higher than in Acacia. The potential for fouling of Mahogany is higher than Acacia. However, the risk of abrasion in Acacia is higher than in Mahogany due to SiO2, ash content, and total sulfur Acacia being higher than in Mahogany. For corrosion potential, the results of the two samples were similar. In addition, acacia wood has a higher AFT value than mahogany wood. The probe observations on the burning of DTF show that Acacia ash deposits are more abundant than Mahogany. This is because the ash content, Fe2O3, MgO, and SiO2 Acacia is higher than in Mahogany. There is material sticking on the probes of both samples. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out special treatment before burning 100% of the biomass of Acacia and Mahogany wood in coal boilers to be safe from slagging, fouling, and corrosion. Biomass has a potential for co-combustion in power plants. Currently, biomass waste in Indonesia is quite abundant but has not been used optimally. The government has begun to promote co-firing plans in Indonesia with the main material in the form of waste that has great potential, including palm oil waste, urban waste, agricultural waste and wood waste. Wood waste is a big potential, especially in Central Java and East Java, because both locations are producers of wood waste from furniture. The raw material used in this research is wood biomass originating from the Mojokerto and Temanggung areas. The sample used is wood waste that has been processed in the form of wood chips. This research was conducted to compare the combustion characteristics between wood biomass from Mojokerto and Temanggung as co-firing material. This study compares and discusses materials that match the potential of wood waste seen from initial predictions based on characteristics, combustion tests and recommendations for the feasibility of co-firing in power plants. This test was carried out by burning in a Drop Tube Furnace (DTF) with 100% biomass as raw material at temperatures of 500°C and 600°C. Based on the calculation of the slagging prediction, the results of the two samples are quite similar. Most of the indexes show the same risk except for the ash melting index which shows moderate risk for Mojokerto wood and low risk for Temanggung wood. On the corrosion potential there are also different results because the ratio of total sulfur and chlorine in Mojokerto wood shows a high corrosion risk, while Temanggung wood has a moderate corrosion risk. For the potential for fouling, the two samples are at a high risk potential, while the results of the abrasion calculation show that the potential risk in both samples is at a low risk.
