As bio-indicators, seabirds across the globe help us understand how our environment is changing, and how this is affecting our wildlife. Little Penguins (Eudyptula minor) in Australia are a key species in understanding the changes to the Australian environment. However, studies generally focus on the effects of oceanic changes without always accounting for the potential interactions with the environmental conditions experienced on land during breeding. This study examined the relationships between both marine and terrestrial environmental variables and breeding success in South Australian Little Penguins, observing 10 colonies over a nonconsecutive 28-yr time period. Our results showed that South Australian Little Penguins had a lower breeding success (fewer fledglings produced per pair) when sea surface temperatures were higher in the 3 mo before breeding and when high winds occurred during the breeding season. We also observed local variation between the colonies: breeding success was only influenced by environmental variables for colonies located near open waters and not for colonies located in enclosed bays. These results confirm the idea that future oceanographic warming is expected to reduce the breeding success (and population size) of some Australian seabirds, including Little Penguins. The common noun רְבִיבִים occurs six times in the Hebrew Bible (Deut 32:2; Jer 3:3; 14:22; Mic 5:6; Pss 65:10[10]; 72:6). Its contexts clearly suggest that it belongs to the semantic domain of rain and dew, and that it denotes something desirable. But further precision has eluded interpreters, and the much-discussed Ugaritic words rbb and rb are of little help in this regard. The apparent Akkadian cognate rabbu A, unmentioned in the standard Biblical Hebrew lexica, is considered here, and it is argued on that basis that the word means "gentle rain" or "drizzle." Historical records are significant for current climatology studies. Ecclesiastical records deserve attention for the lively description of people's incomprehension of weather adverse phenomena causes, which were invariably seen as a manifestation of God displeasure and punishment. The religious processions and penitence, done in times of calamity, besought God's blessing for calamity's end. In the years 1744, 1753, 1772, 1793, 1800, 1818 and 1824, the Franciscan Secular Order of Coimbra recorded, for future memory, some of these processions related to extreme weather events that devastated the city of Coimbra. Rainfall and reservoir water level fluctuations are the main external factors of landslides in the Three Gorges Reservoir area. To improve the analysis of slope stability under the combined effect of reservoir water level fluctuations and rainfall, a simplified method for phreatic line calculation of slopes is proposed in this study. Based on the obtained phreatic line, the expression of normal stress on the sliding surface of the slope under the hydrodynamic forces is deduced, and a global analysis method to solve the slope safety factor under hydrodynamic force is proposed. Rainfall is a major requirement for many water resources applications, including food production and security. Understanding the main drivers of rainfall and its variability in semi-arid areas is a key to unlocking the complex rainfall processes influencing the translation of rainfall into runoff. In recent studies, temperature and humidity were found to be among rainfall predictors in Botswana and South African catchments when using complex rainfall models based on the generalized linear models (GLMs). In this study, we explore the use of other less complex models such as artificial neural networks (ANNs), and Multiplicative Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (MARIMA) (a) to further investigate the association between rainfall and large-scale rainfall predictors in Botswana, and (b) to forecast these predictors to simulate rainfall at shorter future time scales (October–December) for policy applications. Climate is one of the major factors controlling agricultural productivity in Africa. Changes in meteorological variables such as rising temperatures, changes in precipitation and increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels affect crop production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of climate change and variability, and crop management on yield of maize (Zea mays L.) grown in the southern part of Tanzania. Using the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer Cropping System Model (DSSAT-CSM), a series of sensitivity experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of maize yields to a range of principal changes in rainfall and temperatures. The sensitivities were estimated under two management practices, one with traditional farming practices, and the other with application of external farm inputs. Dry-spells during the growing season caused yield losses of all cultivars of up to 43% for the prolonged dry-spells of 20 days. Increased rainfall intensity, during vegetative and reproductive stages, caused the decrease in yield of 5 and 2%, respectively. A 50-100% decrease in rainfall intensity during the growing season caused a loss of yields between 40-100%. Increased or decreased temperatures from the baseline values reduced or increased days to flowering and to physiological maturity, respectively. In addition, a decrease in temperature from the baseline values to 2 °C had an overall impact of yields loss for all cultivars. However, yields increased with an increase of temperature by up to 2.5 °C (UH6303 and H628) and 4.5 °C (PAN691). Growing seasons with lower total rainfall (<50 mm) and temperature (<1°C) from their climatological values, caused yield loss as much as 71 and 15%, respectively for PAN691 cultivar. Broken line smoothing is a simple technique for smoothing a broken line fit to observational data and provides a flexible means of interpolation. Here an extension of this technique is proposed, which can be utilized to perform various interpolation tasks, by incorporating, in an objective manner, an explanatory variable available at a considerably denser dataset than the initial main variable. The technique incorporates smoothing terms with adjustable weights, defined by means of the angles formed by the consecutive segments of two broken lines. The mathematical framework and details of the method as well as practical aspects of its application are presented and discussed. In a recent development in the literature, a new temporal rainfall model, based on the Bartlett-Lewis clustering mechanism and intended for sub-hourly application, was introduced. That model replaced the rectangular rain cells of the original model with finite Poisson processes of instantaneous pulses, allowing greater variability in rainfall intensity over short intervals. In the present paper, the basic instantaneous pulse model is first extended to allow for randomly varying storm types. A systematic comparison of a number of key model variants, fitted to 5-min rainfall data from Germany, then generates further new insights into the models, leading to the development of an additional model extension, which introduces dependence between rainfall intensity and duration in a simple way. The new model retains the original rectangular cells, previously assumed inappropriate for fine-scale data, obviating the need for the computationally more intensive instantaneous pulse model.Editor D. A distributed 1D rainfall–runoff model is presented. It consists of the Saint Venant continuity and momentum equations for overland flow and a modified Green-Ampt model for the infiltration on railway embankment steep slopes. The model is applied to adjacent 10-m-wide erosion control experimental plots with different percentages of grass cover. A relationship between the 2-day antecedent rainfall and initial moisture content was established and used to predict the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks). Average values of Ks for 0, 50 and 100% grass cover were found to be 0.1, 1.19 and 2.56 mm/h, respectively. For the majority of cases, the model simulated runoff with acceptable accuracy, 68% having Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) values above 0.50. The average NSE value varied between 0.60 and 0.80, with 0% grass-covered plots yielding the highest values. As expected, the runoff volume decreased with increasing percentage of grass cover. A capillary barrier is a two-layer cover system having distinct hydraulic properties to minimize water infiltration into the underlying soil by utilizing unsaturated soil mechanics principles. In this study, a capillary barrier system was designed as a cover system for a residual soil slope to maintain stability of the slope by minimizing infiltration during heavy rainfalls in the tropics. The capillary barrier system (CBS) was constructed using fine sand as the fine-grained layer and recycled crushed concrete aggregates as the coarse-grained layer. The coarse-grained layer is commonly constructed using gravels or granite chips. However, due to scarcity of aggregates and in consideration of environmental sustainability, recycled crushed concrete aggregates were used as the coarse-grained layer in this project. The suitability of recycled crushed concrete aggregates as a material within the coarse-grained layer of a CBS is subject to the hydraulic property requirement. For comparison, another CBS was constructed using fine sand as the fine-grained layer and a geosynthetic (Secudrain) as the coarse-grained layer. The performance of each constructed CBS on the residual soil slope was monitored using tensiometers installed at different depths - from 0.6 to 1.8 m below the slope surface - and a rainfall gauge mounted on the slope. An adjacent original slope without the CBS was also instrumented using tensiometers and piezometers to investigate the performance and effectiveness of the CBS in reducing rainwater infiltration and maintaining negative pore-water pressures in the slope. Real-time monitoring systems were developed to examine pore-water pressure, rainfall, and groundwater level in the slopes over a 1 year period. Characteristics of pore-water pressure distributions in the residual soil slope under a CBS with recycled crushed concrete aggregates and in the original slope during typical rainfalls are highlighted and compared. According to the Peruvian agricultural ministry, the Pacific watersheds where the great cities and intense farming are located only benefit from 1% of the available freshwater in Peru. Hence a thorough knowledge of the hydrology of this region is of particular importance. In the paper, analysis of this region and of the two other main Peruvian drainages, the Titicaca and Amazonas are reported. Rainfall and runoff data collected by the Peruvian National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (SENAMHI) and controlled under the Hydrogeodynamics of the Amazon Basin (HyBAm) project is the basis of this basin-scale study that covers the 1969–2004 period. Beyond the strong contrasting rainfall conditions that differentiate the dry coastal basins and the wet eastern lowlands, details are given about in situ runoff and per basin rainfall distribution in these regions, and about their different altitude–rainfall relationships. Rainfall and runoff variability is strong in the coastal basins at seasonal and inter-annual time scales, and related to extreme El Niño events in the Pacific Ocean. However, rainfall and runoff are more regular in the Andes and Amazonas at the inter-annual time scale. Warm sea-surface temperatures in the northern tropical Atlantic tend to produce drought in the southern Andes basins. Moreover, significant trends and change-points are observed in the runoff data of Amazonas basins where rainfall and runoff decrease, especially after the mid-1980s and during the low-stage season. Almost all the coastal basins show some change in minimum runoff during the last 35 years while no change is observed in rainfall. Abstract: Different studies and instrument/mission proposals have demonstrated the potential of the passive sub-millimetre–millimetre wave (SMMW) radiometry to provide remote measurements for the characterization of clouds and rain. At these wavelengths radiation received by a satellite over ice clouds is dominantly scattered by the ice particles. Vertically integrated ice and water contents, hydrometeor properties and profiles can then be retrieved from the radiometric observations with the use of multi-frequency retrieval schemes based on inversion databases simulating realistic brightness temperatures from in situ or modeled cloud microphysics profiles. The evaluation of shallow soils water content is very important in many fields, and different hydrological models are widely applied to simulate field-scale water flow and soil water content. The degree of saturation of a shallow soil is a time-varying variable, depending on different weather conditions. In many applications, it is useful to directly correlate the soil degree of saturation to time series of rainfall amount. This paper presents a simplified empirical model, which allows for computation of the soil degree of saturation using readily available climate data on air temperature and rainfall depths. The model is tested with in situ measurements of soil water content collected at three sites in the Emilia Romagna region in northern Italy. The experimental data are compared with the results obtained from the simplified model over an observation period of almost 5 years. The model has been used to generate soil water content time series at different depths and requires a separate calibration for each depth where the degree of saturation is computed. The availability of precipitation records in Uganda has significantly decreased since the 1970s, severely limiting the data available for hydrological modelling. This problem has been addressed in this study by using the generalized linear modelling (GLM) framework to develop stochastic daily rainfall models that have the capability for extending and infilling historic data sets. We have used a relatively sparse raingauge network in the Kyoga basin (in the Upper Nile) to reproduce spatial and temporal patterns of precipitation by fitting occurrence (logistic) and amounts (gamma) models as functions of dominant seasonal, climate and geographical controls. The GLMs were able to reproduce rainfall properties when predefined climatic zones are modelled independently. We were not able to represent the spatial variability of the equatorial climate with one integrated basin scale model, however this is not thought to preclude application to basin scale hydrological modelling. Cette etude evalue les consequences de la variabilite climatique sur la maisiculture pluviale dans l'est Ivoirien. Les tests de stationnarite ont mis en evidence des ruptures dans les series pluviometriques a la fin des annees 1960. L'impact de ces decrochages sur les saisons culturales montre que, malgre sa reduction apres les annees 1970, la duree de la premiere saison culturale ne constitue pas un facteur restrictif pour la maisiculture de cycle court. L'evolution des conditions hydriques de la maisiculture et les potentiels de rendements induits ont ete simules sur la base des donnees climatiques et des resultats d'essais de longue duree. Les conditions hydriques ont ete caracterisees en termes de deficit et d'exces d'eau par le modele CROPWAT-FAO de simulation du bilan hydrique. Turkish annual precipitation regimes are analysed to provide a large-scale perspective and redefine precipitation regions. Monthly total precipitation data are employed for 107 stations (1963-2002). Precipitation regime shape (seasonality) and magnitude (size) are classified using a novel multivariate methodology. Six shape and five magnitude classes are identified, which exhibit clear spatial structure. A composite (shape and magnitude) regime classification reveals dominant controls on spatial variability of precipitation. Intra-annual timing and magnitude of precipitation is highly variable due to seasonal shifts in Polar and sub-Tropical zones and physiographic factors. Nonetheless, the classification methodology is shown to be a powerful tool that identifies physically-interpretable precipitation regions: (1) coastal regimes for Marmara, coastal Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Sea; (2) transitional regimes in continental Aegean and Southeast Anatolia; and (3) inland regimes across Central and Eastern Anatolia. Abstract: The present article reports studies to develop a univariate model to forecast the summer monsoon (June–August) rainfall over India. Based on the data pertaining to the period 1871–1999, the trend and stationarity within the time series have been investigated. After revealing the randomness and non-stationarity within the time series, the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models have been attempted and the ARIMA(0,1,1) has been identified as a suitable representative model. Consequently, an autoregressive neural network (ARNN) model has been attempted and the neural network has been trained as a multilayer perceptron with the extensive variable selection procedure. Sigmoid non-linearity has been used while training the network. Finally, a three-three-one architecture of the ARNN model has been obtained and after thorough statistical analysis the supremacy of ARNN has been established over ARIMA(0,1,1). Abstract: Updated rainfall data to 2006 confirm that the Sahelian rainfall has increased since the end of the 1990s, but the annual average rainfall is still as low as during the drought of the 1970s. The decrease of rainfall is higher in the Northwest and lower in the Southeast Sahel. The increase of temperature over West Africa during the end of the 20th century induced an increase of Potential Evaporation, which might reduce the runoff. However, the joint effect of climate change and of human activities on land cover over more than three decades is responsible for an increase of the runoff coefficients of the West African Sahelian Rivers since the 1970s, despite the rainfall shortage during the same period, as revealed by the analysis of runoff from Mauritania, Burkina-Faso and Niger. The runoff coefficients have increased in regions with less than 750mm of annual rainfall, under Sahelian and subdesertic climates, leading to increased flood peaks, occurring earlier in the season. Even if it is difficult to separate which part of this runoff coefficient increase is due to climate change alone or to human impact on land cover, the highest values are observed in the most inhabited areas, where land cover is dominated by cultivated areas. This climatic/human impact on land cover is so huge that it has changed since decades the hydrological regimes of the Sahelian Rivers, from the small watershed to the largest one, such as the Niger River at Niamey. Epigeous mushroom production in the boreal forest ecosystem varies dramatically from year to year. We tested the hypothesis that the aboveground production of epigeous mushrooms in the Kluane region, Yukon, could be predicted by summer rainfall. There is a single crop in this part of the boreal zone with maximum production during the first 2 weeks of August. We measured standing crops from 1993 to 2007 at 13 areas along 210 km of the Alaska Highway and Haines Road in the southwestern Yukon. Aboveground mushroom crops averaged 24 kg/ha wet weight but varied from 0.0 to 117 kg/ha over the 15 years of study, with a coefficient of variation among years of 143%. Epigeous mushroom production could be predicted from June rainfall of the current year and May rainfall of the year previous with R2 = 0.85. Part of the lack of a perfect fit to rainfall was due to the constraint that years of high mushroom crops could not be followed by another high year, no matter what the rainfall pattern. We were not able to identify the species of mushrooms in this study but we confirm from natural history observations that mushrooms are a critical food for several of the small mammal species in the Yukon boreal forest. The mobility of flowslides is influenced by various factors. In this paper, laboratory flume tests were used to evaluate the influence of soil permeability using different soils with different permeabilities in a model slope, while keeping the slope condition and artificial rainfall intensity constant. It was found that the permeability of soil has a significant influence on the initialization of flowslides and that there is an optimal soil permeability existing for the mobility of flowslides when rainfall intensity is kept constant. Abstract: We analysed the stable isotopes (18O and 2H) of rainwater and drip water within a cave (Nerja Cave) located in the unsaturated zone of a carbonate aquifer. Rainfall is more abundant and presents lower isotopic content in winter, while the volume of drip water is greater and its isotopic content is lower in summer. The flow analysis of 18O through the unsaturated zone confirms the seasonal lag between rainfall and the appearance of drip water in the cave and reveals that the unsaturated zone of the aquifer, in the sector of the cave, behaves like an inertial system with a strong capability to modulate the input signal. Abstract: Rainwater rivulets appear on inclined cables of cable-stayed bridges when wind and rain occur simultaneously. In a restricted range of parameters this is known to cause vibrations of high amplitudes on the cable. The mechanism underlying this effect is still under debate but the role of rainwater rivulets is certain. We use a standard lubrication model to analyse the dynamics of a water film on a cylinder under the effect of gravity and wind load. A simple criterion is then proposed for the appearance and position of rivulets, where the Froude number is the control parameter. Experiments with several geometries of cylinder covered with water in a wind tunnel show the evolution of the rivulets with the Froude number. Comparison of the prediction by the model with these experimental data shows that the main mechanism of rivulet formation and positioning is captured. To cite this article: C. Lemaitre et al., C. R. This study deals with wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) loading and performance when receiving combined sewage. A yearly data set from an activated sludge plant operating at very low food-to-mass ratio (F/M) and being intermittently aerated was analyzed statistically to compare loading and discharge during dry and wet weather. The results show that despite some loading increase, the nitrogen removal performance is only slightly affected by rain, whereas higher soluble COD load discharge is observed. This approach was supplemented with dynamic simulations with the Activated Sludge Model No 1 (ASM1). It was first calibrated on data from an intensive 48-h dry weather sampling campaign at 20 °C. A good fit between simulated and measured variables was obtained after adjusting five parameters of the ASM1. This parameter set was then validated on a wet weather sampling campaign. Once the confidence in the simulations' results was established, several wet-weather scenarios were simulated, with maximum flow and variable pollutant loading. They show that the higher COD load discharge is due to a hydraulic flush of soluble inert compounds, and how the biological potential can be used to treat almost any realistically possible carbon and nitrogen overload.
