Early‐stage responses of Brassica juncea, B. napus and B. oleracea during black spot disease and the development of Alternaria brassicicola were evaluated. Infection of plant cells by the fungus occurred mainly through direct penetration or by appressoria and, rarely, stomata in B. juncea and B. oleracea; in B. napus, penetration was mostly direct. The process of conidial germination, germ tubes and appressoria formation on a leaf surface was correlated with the post‐inoculation time and host species (p < 0.05). Changes in the leaf surface were observed at successful infection sites as bright, wax‐deprived areas. Significant differences in progression of infection between Brassica species were observed, with B. oleracea being the most susceptible and B. napus the least. Accumulation of superoxide anion radicals and hydrogen peroxide was not only observed in plant cells, but also in A. brassicicola germ tubes and appressoria at 8 and 12 h post‐inoculation (hpi). Enhanced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation during infection triggered diverse patterns of enzymatic and non‐enzymatic antioxidant activities and phenolic compound contents in response to A. brassicicola. In each Brassica species, a different antioxidant was the most active. With their antioxidant properties, phenolic compounds also played an essential role in these interactions. This phenomenon could be related to the disparate levels of susceptibility of the Brassica species to A. brassicicola; for example, the most susceptible, B. oleracea, showed high ROS accumulation with decreasing tendency during disease progression, unchanged phenolics content, and the highest catalase activity, differentiating it from B. juncea and B. napus. Phytohormones, particularly cytokinin trans-zeatin (tZ), were studied for their impact on the green alga Desmodesmus armatus under cadmium (Cd) stress, focusing on growth, metal accumulation, and stress response mechanisms. Using atomic absorption spectroscopy for the Cd level and high-performance liquid chromatography for photosynthetic pigments and phytochelatins, along with spectrophotometry for antioxidants and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry for phytohormones, we found that tZ enhances Cd uptake in D. armatus, potentially improving phycoremediation of aquatic environments. Cytokinin mitigates Cd toxicity by regulating internal phytohormone levels and activating metal tolerance pathways, increasing phytochelatin synthase activity and phytochelatin accumulation essential for Cd sequestration. Treatment with tZ and Cd also resulted in increased cell proliferation, photosynthetic pigment and antioxidant levels, and antioxidant enzyme activities, reducing oxidative stress. This suggests that cytokinin-mediated mechanisms in D. armatus enhance its capacity for Cd uptake and tolerance, offering promising avenues for more effective aquatic phycoremediation techniques. Phytohormones, such as auxins and cytokinins, take part in the integration of growth control and stress response, but their role in algal adaptation to heavy metal remains to be elucidated. The current research indicated that lead (Pb), one of the most toxic metals in nature, causes severe depletion of endogenous cytokinins, auxins, and gibberellin and an increase in abscisic acid content in the green alga Acutodesmus obliquus. Exogenous auxins and cytokinins alleviate Pb toxicity through the regulation of the endogenous phytohormones' levels. Exogenously applied auxins provoked the coordinated activation metal tolerance mechanisms leading to the increase in phytochelatin synthase activity and accumulation of phytochelatins and their precursors, which are essential for Pb sequestration. On the other hand, phytochelatin synthesis decreased in algal cells treated with cytokinins. Significant changes in the levels of low molecular weight metabolites, mainly involved in metal chelation and glutathione synthesis pathway under the influence of phytohormones in algal cells growing in the presence of Pb stress, were observed. This is the first report showing that auxins and cytokinins are important regulatory factors in algal adaptation strategies to heavy metal stress based on thiol-mediated compounds and the maintenance of phytohormone homeostasis. The presented research concerns the use of nickel cobaltite nanoparticles (NiCo 2 O 4 NPs) for the heterogeneous activation of peracetic acid and application of NiCo 2 O 4 -PAA system for degradation 10 organic micropollutants from the group of bisphenols. The bisphenols removal (initial concentration 1 μM) process was optimized by selecting the appropriate process conditions. The optimal amount of catalyst (115 mg/L), peracetic acid (PAA) concentration (7 mM) and pH (7) were determined using response surface analysis in the Design of Experiment. Then, NiCo 2 O 4 NPs were used to check the possibility of reuse in subsequent oxidation cycles. The work also attempts to explain the mechanism of oxidation of the studied micropollutants. The participation of the sorption process on the catalyst was excluded and based on the experiments with radical scavengers it can be concluded that the oxidation proceeds in a radical pathway, mainly with participation of O 2 •- radicals. Experiments conducted in real water matrices exhibit low impact on degradation efficiency. Toxicity tests with green alga Acutodesmus obliquus and aquatic plant Lemna minor showed that post-reaction mixture influenced growth and the content of photosynthetic pigments in concentration dependent manner. Abstract The effects of auxins (IAA, IBA, PAA) and cytokinins (t Z, Kin, DPU) on the growth, oxidative damage, level of antioxidants and the activity of antioxidant enzymes as well as the contents of proteins and photosynthetic pigments in green alga Acutodesmus obliquus were investigated under 100 μM lead (Pb) stress. Heavy metal induced oxidative damage as evidenced by a decrease in cell number and reduction in the contents of proteins and chlorophylls as a consequence of an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and lipid peroxidation. The application of exogenous auxins and cytokinins modulated biosorption of Pb by algal cells significantly alleviated the growth inhibition and stimulated the accumulation of proteins, chlorophylls and carotenes. Phytohormones also activated the xanthophyll cycle which is extensively involved in the protection of the photosynthetic apparatus in adverse environmental conditions. The reduction in oxidative stress caused by the presence of toxic Pb was observed in algal cultures treated with phytohormones. Cytokinins were more effective in lowering hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation levels in comparison with auxins. This improving effect of cytokinins seems to be mediated by a decrease in Pb accumulation by algal cells, whereas auxins promoted metal uptake. Importantly, auxins and cytokinins enhanced the redox status of algal cells inducing the increase in the content of antioxidants (ascorbate, glutathione, and proline) and in the activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and glutathione reductase) involved in ROS scavenging. The results of the present study strongly suggest that exogenous auxins and cytokinins enhanced the resistance of microalga A. obliquus against Pb toxicity through the activation of the antioxidant defence system. The responses of Acutodesmus obliquus (Chlorophyceae) cells to the presence of lead (Pb 2+ ) at the range of concentrations 0.01–500 μM during 7 days of culture were studied. The growth rate was clearly reduced and the changes in the level of low molecular weight metabolites, particularly involved in heavy metal chelation and glutathione synthesis pathway under Pb 2+ stress, were observed. External metal induced the accumulation of phytochelatins (PC) precursors (cysteine, glutathione) and stimulated the activity of phytochelatins synthase leading directly to enhanced production of PC 2 - 5 responsible for binding and detoxification of Pb 2+ . The enhancement of xanthophyll cycle indicates its significant role in algal adaptation to adverse environmental conditions. Another defense mechanisms against metal stress is the disturbances in hormonal homeostasis, as indicated by the increase in the level of abscisic acid with simultaneous decreases in the contents of indole-3-acetic acid and trans- zeatin, representatives of auxins and cytokinins, respectively. Results suggest that the green alga A. obliquus has evolved a complex network to maintain toxic concentrations of Pb 2+ within physiological limits and to minimize the harmful effects of this nonessential metal. Abstract: Interaction between brassinosteroids (BRs) (brassinolide, BL; 24-epibrassinolide, 24-epiBL; 28-homobrassinolide, 28-homoBL; castasterone, CS; 24-epicastasterone, 24-epiCS; 28-homocastasterone, 28-homoCS) and adenine- (trans-zeatin, tZ; kinetin, Kin) as well as phenylurea-type (1,3-diphenylurea, DPU) cytokinins (CKs) in the regulation of cell number, phytohormone level and the content of chlorophyll, monosaccharide and protein in unicellular green alga Chlorella vulgaris (Trebouxiophyceae) were examined. Chlorella vulgaris exhibited sensitivity to CKs in the following order of their stimulating properties: 10 nM tZ > 100 nM Kin >1 μM DPU. Exogenously applied BRs possessed the highest biological activity in algal cells at concentration of 10 nM. Among the BRs, BL was characterized by the highest activity, while 28-homoCS - by the lowest. The considerable increase in the level of all endogenous BRs by 27–46% was observed in C. vulgaris culture treated with exogenous 10 nM tZ. It can be speculated that CKs may stimulate BR activity in C. vulgaris by inducing the accumulation of endogenous BRs. CKs interacted synergistically with BRs increasing the number of cells and endogenous accumulation of proteins, chlorophylls and monosaccharides in C. vulgaris. The highest stimulation of algal growth and the contents of analyzed biochemical parameters were observed for BL applied in combination with tZ, whereas the lowest in the culture treated with both 28-homoCS and DPU. However, regardless of the applied mixture of BRs with CKs, the considerable increase in cell number and the metabolite accumulation was found above the level obtained in cultures treated with any single phytohormone in unicellular green alga C. vulgaris. Abstract: The relationships between brassinosteroids (BRs) (brassinolide, BL; 24-epiBL; 28-homoBL; castasterone, CS; 24-epiCS; 28-homoCS) and auxins (indole-3-acetic acid, IAA; indole-3-butyric acid, IBA; indole-3-propionic acid, IPA) in the regulation of cell number, phytohormone level and metabolism in green alga Chlorella vulgaris were investigated. The application of 50 μM IAA stimulated the level of all detected endogenous BRs in C. vulgaris cells. The stimulatory effect of BRs in green algae was arranged in the following order: BL > 24-epiBL > 28-homoBL > CS > 24-epiCS > 28-homoCS. Auxins cooperated synergistically with BRs stimulating algal cell proliferation and endogenous accumulation of proteins, chlorophylls and monosaccharides in C. vulgaris. The highest stimulation of algal growth and the contents of analyzed biochemical parameters were observed for the mixture of BL with IAA, whereas the lowest in the culture treated with both 28-homoCS and IBA. However, regardless of the applied mixture of BRs with auxins, the considerable increase in cell number and the metabolite accumulation was found above the level obtained in cultures treated with any single phytohormone. Abstract: The present study was undertaken to test the influence of exogenously applied phytohormones: auxins (IAA, IBA, NAA, PAA), cytokinins (BA, CPPU, DPU, 2iP, Kin, TDZ, Z), gibberellin (GA3), jasmonic acid (JA) as well as polyamine - spermidine (Spd) upon the growth and metabolism of green microalga Chlorella vulgaris (Chlorophyceae) exposed to heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Pb) stress. The inhibitory effect of heavy metals on algal growth, metabolite accumulation and enzymatic as well as non-enzymatic antioxidant system was arranged in the following order: Cd > Pb > Cu. Exogenously applied phytohormones modify the phytotoxicity of heavy metals. Auxins, cytokinins, gibberellin and spermidine (Spd) can alleviate stress symptoms by inhibiting heavy metal biosorption, restoring algal growth and primary metabolite level. Moreover, these phytohormones and polyamine stimulate antioxidant enzymes’ (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, catalase) activities and ascorbate as well as glutathione accumulation by producing increased antioxidant capacity in cells growing under abiotic stress. Increased activity of antioxidant enzymes reduced oxidative stress expressed by lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide level. In contrast JA enhanced heavy metal toxicity leading to increase in metal biosorption and ROS generation. The decrease in cell number, chlorophylls, carotenoids, monosaccharides, soluble proteins, ascorbate and glutathione content as well as antioxidant enzyme activity was also obtained in response to JA and heavy metals. Determining the stress markers (lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide) and antioxidants’ level as well as antioxidant enzyme activity in cells is important for understanding the metal-specific mechanisms of toxicity and that these associated novel endpoints may be useful metrics for accurately predicting toxicity. The data suggest that phytohormones and polyamine play an important role in the C. vulgaris responding to abiotic stressor and algal adaptation ability to metal contamination of aquatic environment. The growing awareness of the depletion of fossil fuels and numerous environmental issues have led to increased interest in finding natural components that can be used to produce various types of fuels. In this study, composts made from the organic fraction of agri-food waste (i.e., two composts produced in a bioreactor and one obtained from a Municipal Waste Disposal Facility) were evaluated for the first time as potential sources of additives for fuel production. The presence of fatty acid methyl esters was determined using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS/SIM), while the calorific value and heat of combustion of the samples were measured in accordance with the PN-EN ISO 1928:2002 standard using a calorimeter. Chromatographic studies identified the presence of 33 compounds, predominantly unsaturated esters. The highest ester content was noted in the compost obtained from the company, while the lowest content was found in the compost containing grass, buckwheat husk, and apple pomace. Of the studied raw materials, the highest calorific value and heat of combustion on a dry matter basis were observed for the compost containing grass, buckwheat husk, and apple pomace, while the lowest values were recorded for the compost obtained from the company. Due to thegrowing awareness of fossil fuel depletion and environmental issues, biodiesel alternative fuel is currently of substantial interest. This research assessed herbal industry wastes as a potential resource for biodiesel production for the first time. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), obtained in the transesterification reaction, were extracted from the herbal samples by ultrasound-assisted extraction and identified withgas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the selected ion monitoring mode. The presence of at least 20 (e.g., in chamomile and chicory) FAMEs, up to 31 in nettle and senna, was reported. The unsaturated FAMEs were found in higher amounts than saturated. Linoleic acidwas the major polyunsaturated FAME in herbal wastes, while palmitic acid was the major saturated FAME. The highest content of FAMEs was identified in rye bran, Figure tea, and chicory. According to the cetane number prediction, BS EN 14214:2012+A2:2019, and hierarchical clustering on principal components (HCPC)wastes from, e.g., nettle, sage, and senna, are the most suitable in biodiesel production with fuel properties acceptable by the EuropeanStandards.Principal component analysis and HCPC allowed to classify and groupsimilar plants according to their FAMEs content; however, additional studies of herbal biofuel properties are needed. Phytohormones play key roles in many aspects of plant growth and development, as well as in resistance to abiotic stresses. The presence of heavy metal limits phytohormone endogenous level; however, the application of brassinosteroids (BRs) restores phytohormone homeostasis and reduces unfavorable consequences of heavy metal on plant growth. Therefore, the aim of this study was to (1) broaden previously published analyses/findings to study the effect of 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) and/or lead (Pb) on Acutodesmus obliquus phytohormone level after 5 days of cultivation using LC-QToF-MS quantification technique and (2) extend the total amount of quantified phytohormones in A. obliquus. The study confirmed that exogenous EBL increased the contents of gibberellin A3 (GA3), auxins (AXs) (indole-3-acetic acid, phenylacetic acid), BRs brassinolide, 24-epibrassinolide (EBL), 28-homobrassinolide, castasterone, 24-epicastasterone, typhasterol, cathasterone, 6-deoxotyphasterol, as well as different types of cytokinins (CKs): free bases, ribosides, and conjugates (N- and O-glucosides). On the other hand, treatment with Pb had an opposite effect on BRs, GA3, AXs, and free bases, as well as ribosides of CKs. The abscisic acid (ABA) level decreased under EBL treatment but increased in response to Pb stress. The level of N-glucosides, as well as O-glucosides of CKs, also significantly increased in response to Pb alone. Interestingly, the co-application of EBL and Pb led to an increase in BRs, GA3, AXs, and CKs content in the algae. Principal component analysis revealed that based on treatments, increase of GA3, BRs, and AXs was found to be in the following order: 1 μM EBL > 0.01 μM Pb + 1 μM EBL > 500 μM Pb + 1 μM EBL > control > 0.01 μM Pb > 500 μM Pb. Moreover, very strong significant linear relations between almost all studied AXs and BRs were noted. Summarizing, this research did not only allow to detect the occurrence of ABA, GA3, AXs, BRs, and CKs in A. obliquus for the first time but also to study the combined action of EBL and Pb, as well as compare it with treatment alone. Grass collected as part of roadside maintenance is conventionally subjected to composting, which has the disadvantage of generating significant CO2 emissions. Thus, it is crucial to find an alternative method for the utilisation of grass waste. The aim of this study was to determine the specific biogas yield (SBY) from the anaerobic mono-digestion of grass from road verges and to assess the content of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAMEs) in grass in relation to the time of cutting and the preservation method of the studied material. The biochemical biogas potential (BBP) test and the FAMEs content were performed on fresh and ensiled grass collected in spring, summer, and autumn. The highest biogas production was obtained from fresh grass cut in spring (715.05 ± 26.43 NL kgVS−1), while the minimum SBY was observed for fresh grass cut in summer (540.19 ± 24.32 NL kgVS−1). The methane (CH4) content in the biogas ranged between 55.0 ± 2.0% and 60.0 ± 1.0%. The contents of ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in biogas remained below the threshold values for these inhibitors. The highest level of total FAMEs was determined in fresh grass cut in autumn (98.08 ± 19.25 mg gDM−1), while the lowest level was detected in fresh grass cut in spring (56.37 ± 7.03 mg gDM−1). C16:0 and C18:0, which are ideal for biofuel production, were present in the largest amount (66.87 ± 15.56 mg gDM−1) in fresh grass cut in autumn. The ensiling process significantly impacted the content of total FAMEs in spring grass, leading to a reduction in total saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and an increase in total unsaturated fatty acids (USFAs). We conclude that grass biomass collected during the maintenance of road verges is a valuable feedstock for the production of both liquid and gaseous biofuels; however, generating energy from biogas appears to be more efficient than producing biodiesel. Utilizing the organic fraction of agri-food industry waste for fertilization represents one approach to waste management, with composting emerging as a popular method. Composts derived from this waste may contain plant hormones alongside primary macronutrients. This study aimed to evaluate the content of plant hormones in composts crafted from the organic fraction of agri-food industry waste. The presence of these substances was ascertained using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, applied to extracted samples from three composts produced in a bioreactor and three obtained from companies. The results indicate the presence of 35 compounds, which belong to six types of plant hormones: auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, brassinosteroids, abscisic acid, and salicylic acid, in composts for the first time. The highest amount of plant hormones was noted in buckwheat husk and biohumus extract (35 compounds), and the lowest in hemp chaff and apple pomace (14 compounds). Brassinosteroids (e.g., brassinolide, 28-homobrassinolide, 24-epicastasterone, 24-epibrassinolide, and 28-norbrassinolide) and auxins (e.g., indolilo-3-acetic acid) are dominant. Aquatic organisms are exposed to many stressors, e.g., heavy metals. Brassinosteroids, a plant hormone group, can effectively stimulate plants to defend against the negative impact of a heavy metal. The present study was conducted with an aim to find out the influence of 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) on Acutodesmus obliquus treated with 0.01 and 500 μM of lead (Pb) ions during 7 days of cultivation. Pb has a toxic effect on algal cultures because it limits both the growth and development and induces oxidative stress. Simultaneously, 1 μM EBL was involved in protecting algal cells against the toxic effect of Pb. Despite the presence of Pb, EBL significantly increased the number of algal cells and their metabolite content (e.g., proteins, monosaccharides, chlorophylls, carotenes, and xanthophylls). Cultures treated concurrently with EBL and Pb were characterized by a reduction in their content of endogenous Pb, H2O2, and malondialdehyde. Also, EBL increased the activity of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, and the content of ascorbate and glutathione. EBL increased the phytochelatin synthase activity, thereby enhancing the production of phytochelatins accountable for both binding and detoxification of Pb. These results indicate the influence of EBL on the inhibitory effect of Pb in A. obliquus. Brassinosteroids play an important role in the plant growth and development as well as in the adaptation of plants to environmental stresses. Studies have shown the effect of 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) in the range of concentrations 0.0001–10 μM on the green unicellular alga Acutodesmus obliquus (Chlorophyceae) during 7 days of cultivation. EBL is an effective stimulator of algal growth as it causes an increase in the number of cells and the contents of selected metabolites such as proteins, monosaccharides, and photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls, carotenes, and xanthophylls). Furthermore, EBL inhibits the formation of reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide and oxidative damage as evidenced by a decrease of the lipid peroxidation. Microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments constitute an ideal surface for biofilm formation, facilitating or hindering the transport of contaminants. This study aims to provide knowledge on the sorption behavior of high-density polyethylene (μ-HDPE) after algal degradation toward UV filters. Up to now, the oxidation of μ-HDPE using the microalga Acutodesmus obliquus has not been studied. The results obtained by infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and porosimetry analysis revealed a biofilm formation on the surface of μ-HDPE and the presence of carbonyl and double bond functional groups. Also, this is the first time that the simultaneous sorption of benzophenone (BPh), 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4MBC), benzophenone 3 (BPh3), and benzophenone 2 (BPh2) onto biofilm-covered HDPE (biofilm-HDPE) in water have been studied. Filters' sorption on biofilm-HDPE particles follows pseudo-second-order kinetics, and film diffusion was the stage that limited the sorption rate. The Langmuir isothermal model describes the adsorption process for 4MBC, BPh, and BPh2 well, and the linear model is fit for the sorption of BPh3. Hydrophobic interactions, van der Waals forces, electrostatic, and π-π bon are the main mechanisms responsible for the sorption. Biological analysis indicated that HDPE at concentrations of 500 mg L−1 inhibits A. obliquus growth and reduces the levels of proteins, sugars, and chlorophylls. In contrast, the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the contents of small molecular weight antioxidants significantly increased in algal cells treated with microplastic. These findings confirm the toxicity of μ-HDPE and demonstrate the induction of defense mechanisms in A. obliquus as a response to environmental pollutants. This study aims to provide insights into plant-insect interaction during the formation and development of open gall structure on the leaves of Robinia pseudoacacia during gall formation by Obolodiplosis robiniae. This was the first time such far-reaching studies were performed at a biochemical and anatomical level. The gall wall is created from a few thick cells covered with epidermis. This parenchymatous nutritive tissue is rich in starch. Sclerenchyma only occurs around the vascular bundles as a result of the lignification of the parenchyma of the bundle sheaths. The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the new structure was reduced and catalase activity was inhibited, which suggests another pathway of ROS decomposition – e.g. by ascorbate or glutathione peroxidase. The gall structure was combined with an increasing level of protein and non-protein thiols. Phenols seems to be a good protective factor; whose level was lower in infected leaflets. Levels of MUFA (monosaturated fatty acids) and SFA (saturated fatty acids) rose, probably as source of food for insects. The amount of fatty acid is positively correlated with the plant response. We detected that non infected leaflets produced C6:0 (hexanoic acid) and C8:0 (octanoic acid) fatty acids connected with odor. Changes in gall color as they develop are connected with photosynthetic pigments degradation (mainly chlorophylls) where the pathway of astaxanthin transformation to fatty acid is considered to be the most important process during gall maturation. We evaluated the mechanisms that control Cd accumulation and distribution, and the mechanisms that protect the photosynthetic apparatus of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf. cv. Basilisk and Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Massai from Cd‐induced oxidative stress, as well as the effects of simulated summer or winter conditions on these mechanisms. Both grasses were grown in unpolluted and Cd‐polluted Oxisol (0.63 and 3.6 mg Cd kg−1 soil, respectively) at summer and winter conditions. Grasses grown in the Cd‐polluted Oxisol presented higher Cd concentration in their tissues in the winter conditions, but the shoot biomass production of both grasses was not affected by the experimental conditions. Cadmium was more accumulated in the root apoplast than the root symplast, contributing to increase the diameter and cell layers of the cambial region of both grasses. Roots of B. decumbens were more susceptible to disturbed nutrients uptake and nitrogen metabolism than roots of P. maximum. Both grasses translocated high amounts of Cd to their shoots resulting in oxidative stress. Oxidative stress in the leaves of both grasses was higher in summer than winter, but only in P. maximum superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities were increased. However, CO2 assimilation was not affected due to the protection provided by reduced glutathione (GSH) and phytochelatins (PCs) that were more synthesized in shoots than roots. In summary, the root apoplast was not sufficiently effective to prevent Cd translocation from roots to shoot, but GSH and PCs provided good protection for the photosynthetic apparatus of both grasses. The present study aimed to identify biologically active secondary metabolites from the rare plant species, Pulsatilla patens subsp. patens and the cultivated P. vulgaris subsp. vulgaris. Chromatographic fractionation of the ethanolic extract of the roots of P. patens subsp. patens resulted in the isolation of two oleanane-type glycosides identified as hederagenin 3-O-ß-d-glucopyranoside (2.7 mg) and hederagenin 3-O-ß-d-galactopyranosyl-(1→2)-ß-d-glucopyranoside (3.3 mg, patensin). HPLC analysis of the methanolic extract of the crude root of P. patens subsp. patens and P. vulgaris subsp. vulgaris revealed the presence of Pulsatilla saponin D (hederagenin 3-O-a-l-rhamnopyranosyl(1→2)-[ß-d-glucopyranosyl(1→4)]-a-l-arabinopyranoside). Chromatographic analysis using GC-MS of the silylated methanolic extracts from the leaves and roots of these species identified the presence of carboxylic acids, such as benzoic, caffeic, malic, and succinic acids. The extracts from Pulsatilla species were tested for their antifungal, antimicrobial, and antimalarial activities, and cytotoxicity to mammalian cell lines. Both P. patens subsp. patens and P. vulgaris subsp. vulgaris were active against the fungus Candida glabrata with the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 9.37 µg/mL and 11 µg/mL, respectively. The IC50 values for cytotoxicity evaluation were in the range of 32-38 µg/mL for P. patens subsp. patens and 35-57 µg/mL for P. vulgaris subsp. vulgaris for each cell line, indicating general cytotoxic activity throughout the panel of evaluated cancer and noncancer cells. The usefulness of Wolffia arrhiza for decontamination of waters from phthalates and other organic compounds was studied using artificial growing medium and real municipal wastewater samples. The eight most frequently detected phthalates were considered: dimethyl (DMP), diethyl (DEP), dipropyl (DnPP), dibutyl (DnBP), diisobutyl (DIBP), bis(2-ethylhexyl) (DEHP), diizoheptyl (DIHP) and diizononyl (DINP). The reduction of phthalates concentration observed during seven days of W. arrhiza cultivation on artificial growing medium was between 78.9 and 99.7%. Kinetics of phthalates degradation by W. arrhiza in real effluent wastewater was similar to those with laboratory-made solutions. The significant removal of nutrients (75-78%) and reduction of oxygen demand (93-97%) was achieved during cultivation of W. arrhiza. Purification efficiency of non-treated municipal wastewater with W. arrhiza was better than obtained with the use of Lemna minor, which is wide used in constructed wetlands, and not much worse than those obtained in conventional Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). Analysis of biochemical components, stress markers and antioxidant activity in W. arrhiza shows its good acclimation to high pollution of aquatic environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
