Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a crucial technique to prepare high-quality graphene because of its controllability. In the research, we perform a systematic computational fluid dynamics numerical investigation on the effect of gas-phase reaction dynamics on the graphene growth in a horizontal tube CVD reactor. The research results indicate that the gas-phase chemical reactions in the CVD reactor are in a nonequilibrium state, as evidenced by the comparison of species mole fraction distributions during the CVD process and under chemical equilibrium conditions. The effect of gas-phase reaction dynamics on the deposition rate of graphene under different conditions is studied, and our research shows that the main causes of change in graphene growth rates under different conditions are gas-phase reaction dynamics and active species transport. The results of numerical simulation agree well with the experimental phenomena. The research results also indicate that, for methane, the main limiting factor of graphene growth is the surface kinetic reaction rate. Conversely, for active species, the main limiting factor of graphene growth is species transport. Our research suggests that the growth rate of graphene can be regulated from the perspective of the gas reaction mechanism. The impact of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) on India's intraseasonal and interannual variability of rainfall has been investigated in this study. Anomalous MJO amplitude points from 1979 to 2021 are classified into post-, pre- and normal onset years of the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM). High MJO amplitudes, particularly those exceeding three standard deviations from the mean, correlate with significant rainfall anomalies, affecting both the timing and intensity of the monsoon. Specific MJO phases contribute differently to rainfall patterns, with phases 3, 4, and 5 generally suppressing rainfall, while phases 1 and 8 enhance it. Pre-onset years show significant rainfall anomalies driven by strong MJO activity, particularly during phases 3, 4, and 5. Normal onset years exhibit notable suppression and enhancement patterns, with significant fluctuations observed in 1996 and 2020. Post-onset years have the highest frequency of anomalies, with phases 3 and 4 prominently influencing rainfall variability. Overall, this research underscores the critical role of MJO dynamics in modulating rainfall variability in India. The findings suggest that understanding MJO phases can improve rainfall predictability and monsoon onset forecasting, aiding in better climate prediction and water resource management. Changes in EEG have been reported in both major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). Specifically, power changes in EEG alpha and theta frequency bands during rest and task are known in both disorders. This leaves open whether there are changes in yet another component of the electrophysiological EEG signal, namely phase-related processes that may allow for distinguishing MDD and BD. For that purpose, we investigate EEG-based spontaneous phase in the resting state of MDD, BD and healthy controls. Our main findings show: (i) decreased spontaneous phase variability in frontal theta of both MDD and BD compared to HC; (ii) decreased spontaneous phase variability in central-parietal alpha in MDD compared to both BD and HC; (iii) increased delays or lags of alpha phase cycles in MDD (but not in BD), which (iv) correlate with the decreased phase variability in MDD. Together, we show similar (decreased frontal theta variability) and distinct (decreased central-parietal alpha variability with increased lags or delays) findings in the spontaneous phase dynamics of MDD and BD. Both straight and curved carbon fibers are widely used in various commercial gas diffusion layer (GDL) fabrications. The effect of the different carbon fiber curvatures on two-phase flow dynamics within the cathode GDLs of proton exchange membrane fuel cells remains unclear. In this study, we investigate liquid transport in three types of GDLs with varying fiber curvatures using the two-phase volume of fluid simulations in OpenFOAM. For the first time, a rod periodic surface model is combined with a layer-by-layer fiber stacking strategy, to stochastically reconstruct GDL structures while incorporating crucial parameters from physical (experimental) GDLs. A grid independence study and model validation are conducted. Following pore network analysis of pore size distribution and connectivity, we study the time-varying GDL total and local water saturation and capillary pressure. Despite maintaining similar layer and bulk porosity, increased fiber curvature enhances pore connectivity but raises water saturation and capillary pressure, increasing the risk of flooding. Additionally, droplets in gas channels with straight-fiber GDLs are larger and have slower movement than those in curved-fiber GDLs. Fiber curvature inversely affects drainage capacity in GDLs and connected channels. With comparable water saturation and capillary pressure, curved-fiber GDLs exhibit lower discrepancies, suggesting improved uniformity in water distribution. Real-time detection of intermediate species and final products at the surface and near-surface in interfacial solid–gas reactions is critical for an accurate understanding of heterogeneous reaction mechanisms. In this article, an experimental method that can simultaneously monitor the ultrafast dynamics at the surface and above the surface in photoinduced heterogeneous reactions is presented. This method relies on a combination of mass spectrometry and femtosecond pump–probe spectroscopy. As a model system, the photoinduced reaction of methyl iodide on and above a cerium oxide surface is investigated. The species that are simultaneously detected from the surface and gas-phase present distinct features in the mass spectra, such as a sharp peak followed by an adjacent broad shoulder. The sharp peak is attributed to the species detected from the surface, while the broad shoulder is due to the detection of gas-phase species above the surface, as confirmed by multiple experiments. By monitoring the evolution of the sharp peak and broad shoulder as a function of the pump–probe time delay, transient signals are obtained that describe the ultrafast photoinduced reaction dynamics of methyl iodide on the surface and in the gas-phase. By measuring the current–voltage characteristics and the switching current distributions as a function of temperature, we have investigated the phase dynamics of Al tunnel ferromagnetic Josephson junctions (JJs), designed to fall in the typical range of parameters of state-of-the-art transmons, providing evidence of phase diffusion processes. The comparison with the experimental outcomes on non-magnetic JJs with nominally the same electrodynamical parameters demonstrates that the introduction of ferromagnetic barriers does not cause any sizeable detrimental effect and supports the notion of including tunnel ferromagnetic JJs in qubit architectures. The method of identifying the direction of the coupling between oscillators based on the simulation of phase dynamics of weakly coupled and weakly noisy periodic processes is used to determine the direction of the coupling between time series extracted from biological signals. The third-order response lies at the heart of simulating and interpreting nonlinear spectroscopies ranging from two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) to 2D electronic (2D-ES), and 2D sum frequency generation (2D-SFG). The extra time and frequency dimensions in these spectroscopic techniques provide access to rich information on the electronic and vibrational states present, the coupling between them, and the resulting rates at which they exchange energy that are obscured in linear spectroscopy, particularly for condensed phase systems that usually contain many overlapping features. While the exact quantum expression for the third-order response is well established, it is incompatible with the methods that are practical for calculating the atomistic dynamics of large condensed phase systems. These methods, which include both classical mechanics and quantum dynamics methods that retain quantum statistical properties while obeying the symmetries of classical dynamics, such as LSC-IVR, centroid molecular dynamics, and Ring Polymer Molecular Dynamics (RPMD), naturally provide short-time approximations to the multi-time symmetrized Kubo transformed correlation function. Here, we show how the third-order response can be formulated in terms of equilibrium symmetrized Kubo transformed correlation functions. We demonstrate the utility and accuracy of our approach by showing how it can be used to obtain the third-order response of a series of model systems using both classical dynamics and RPMD. In particular, we show that this approach captures features such as anharmonically induced vertical splittings and peak shifts while providing a physically transparent framework for understanding multidimensional spectroscopies. The phase reduction approach has manifested its efficacy in investigating synchronization behaviors in limit-cycle oscillators. However, spatial distributions of the phase value on the limit cycle may lead to illusions of synchronizations for oscillators close to bifurcations. In this paper, we compared the phase sensitivity function in the spatial domain and time domain for oscillators close to saddle-node homoclinic (SNH) bifurcation, also known as saddle-node bifurcation on an invariant circle. It was found that the phase sensitivity function in the spatial domain can show the phase accumulation feature on the limit cycle, which can be ignored in the phase sensitivity function in the time domain. As an example, the synchronization distributions of uncoupled SNH oscillators driven by common and independent noises were investigated, where the space-dependent coupling function was considered on common noise. Characterizing the brain's dynamic pattern of response to an input in electroencephalography (EEG) is not a trivial task due to the entanglement of the complex spontaneous brain activity. In this context, the brain's response can be defined as (1) the additional neural activity components generated after the input or (2) the changes in the ongoing spontaneous activities induced by the input. Moreover, the response can be manifested in multiple features. Three commonly studied examples of features are (1) transient temporal waveform, (2) time–frequency representation, and (3) phase dynamics. The most extensively used method of average event-related potentials (ERPs) captures the first one, while the latter two and other more complex features are attracting increasing attention. However, there has not been much work providing a systematic illustration and guidance for how to effectively exploit multifaceted features in neural cognitive research. Based on a visual oddball ERPs dataset with 200 participants, this work demonstrates how the information from the above-mentioned features are complementary to each other and how they can be integrated based on stereotypical neural-network-based machine learning approaches to better exploit neural dynamic information in basic and applied cognitive research. Methanol is one of the most abundant interstellar Complex Organic Molecules (iCOMs) and represents a major building block for the synthesis of increasingly complex oxygen-containing molecules. The reaction between protonated methanol and its neutral counterpart, giving protonated dimethyl ether, $ \require{mhchem} \ce{(CH3)2OH+} $ (CH 3 ) 2 OH + , along with the ejection of a water molecule, has been proposed as a key reaction in the synthesis of dimethyl ether in space. Here, gas phase vibrational spectra of the $ \ce{(CH3)2OH+} $ (CH 3 ) 2 OH + reaction product and the $ \ce{[C2H9O2]+} $ [ C 2 H 9 O 2 ] + intermediate complex(es), formed under different pressure and temperature conditions, are presented. The widely tunable free electron laser for infrared experiments, FELIX, was employed to record these vibrational fingerprint spectra using different types of infrared action spectroscopy in the 600-1700 cm $ ^{-1} $ − 1 frequency range, complemented with measurements using an OPO/OPA system to cover the $ \ce{O-H} $ O − H stretching region $ 3400-3700\,{\rm cm}^{-1} $ 3400 − 3700 c m − 1 . The formation of protonated dimethyl ether as a product of the reaction is spectroscopically confirmed, providing the first gas-phase vibrational spectrum of this potentially relevant astrochemical ion. Preparation of neutral non-volatile molecules intact in the gas phase for mass spectrometry or chemical dynamics experiments remains a challenge for many classes of molecules. Here, we report the design and characterization of a fiber-coupled laser-based thermal desorption source capable of preparing intact neutral molecules at high molecular densities in the gas phase for use in velocity-map imaging experiments. Within this source, the sample is deposited onto a thin tantalum foil. Irradiation of the foil from the reverse side by a focused laser beam leads to highly localized heating of the sample, resulting in desorption of a plume of molecules into the gas phase. The fiber-coupled design simplifies the alignment of the desorption laser beam, and the ability to rotate the foil relative to the fixed laser beam allows the sample to be continually refreshed under vacuum. We use 118 nm photoionization of three test molecules—uracil, adenine, and phenylalanine—to characterize the source and to demonstrate various aspects of its performance. These include the dependence of the velocity-map imaging performance on the size of the interaction region and the dependence of the laser-induced desorption source emission on desorption laser power and heating time. Signal levels recorded in these measurements are comparable to those we typically obtain in similar experiments using a pulsed supersonic molecular beam, and we, therefore, believe that the source has considerable potential for use in a wide range of chemical dynamics and other experiments. We investigate the unbiased model for money exchanges with collective debt limit: agents give at random time a dollar to one another as long as they have at least one dollar or they can borrow a dollar from a central bank if the bank is not empty. Surprisingly, this dynamic eventually leads to an asymmetric Laplace distribution of wealth (conjectured in [N. Xi, N. Ding, and Y. Wang, Phys. A, 357 (2005), pp. 543--555] and shown formally in a recent work [N. Lanchier and S. Reed, J. Stat. Phys., 176 (2019), pp. 1115--1137]). In this manuscript, we carry out a formal mean-field limit as the number of agents goes to infinity where we uncover a two-phase ODE dynamic. Convergence towards the unique equilibrium (two-sided geometric) distribution in the large time limit is also shown and the role played by the bank and debt (in terms of Gini index or wealth inequality) will be explored numerically as well. We analyzed growth trajectories recorded in the tree-ring series of Norway spruce Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. and silver fir Abies alba Mill. co-occuring with European beech Fagus sylvatica L. in old-growth forests driven by natural stand dynamics. The study sites were localized in five old-growth stands in the Western Carpathians (Central Europe). We characterized the life histories of 218 individual trees by using 25 metrics which refer to the age of the trees, number of release events, reaction to releases, radial increment and basal area increment. We found a large variation in the dbh-age relationship. The life histories of most trees included two or three (in single cases up to seven) release events. We did not find tree age as an important factor in determining post-release growth response. The maximal basal area increment was frequently registered at the terminal stage of tree life. The life histories of spruces and firs did not significantly differ. We concluded that in natural forests driven by gap-phase dynamics, the history of release events is the primary driver of tree growth and that tree age plays a secondary role. After reaching the overstory, trees can continue growing without significant symptoms of aging until extrinsic forces cause their death. Our results indicate that in the studied ecosystem the persistence of less shade-tolerant spruce is not attributable to the niche differentiation and site partitioning mechanism. • Bubble cluster behaviour in froth characterised by dynamic X-ray radiographic setup. • Particle reattachment, dropback, and accumulation were visualised. • X-ray radiography is a valuable tool for investigating froth dynamics. X-ray radiography presents a non-invasive and dynamic approach for examining multiphase flows, particularly in complex systems like flotation froths. While this technique has been applied successfully in various multiphase studies, such as granular flows and fluidised beds, its utilisation in understanding flotation froths is novel. This study aimed to investigate the behaviour of particles and bubbles within the froth phase using a unique flotation rig combined with an X-ray radiographic setup. Specifically, it sought to understand how the pulp-froth interface influences the entry of bubble clusters into the froth phase and to observe the journey of particles within the froth. The results provided tangible evidence supporting previously inferred phenomena. It was found that the interface between the pulp and froth acted as a barrier, impeding the entry of bubble clusters into the froth phase. However, what was particularly noteworthy about the study was its revelation of extraordinary dynamics in particle movement within the froth phase. These dynamics included the occurrence of reattachment and dropback at critical solid fractions, phenomena that were visually observed for the first time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The radiation dynamics of a closed chain of lasers with optoelectronic delayed coupling is analyzed. We consider bidirectional couplings of two designs: (i) diffusion type with feedback and (ii) bidirectional type without feedback. Assuming that the number of lasers is sufficiently large, we propose integro-differential models for spatially distributed variables with periodic boundary conditions. The critical value of the coupling coefficient is determined at which the stationary state of laser generation spontaneously becomes unstable due to the presence of a delay in the coupling lines. Bifurcations of asymptotically infinite dimension are described. For both types of coupling, we obtain the same two-dimensional complex partial differential equation of the Ginzburg–Landau type (with the difference only in the coefficients) for the slowly varying amplitude of the fundamental harmonic. Using the simplest homogeneous solution of such a quasi-normal form, the oscillations of laser radiation in chains, which can be anti-phase or in-phase depending on the time delay and the design of the couplings, are analytically described. • The models of a large laser chain with bidirectional couplings are proposed. • Bifurcations of infinite dimension are studied in dependence on coupling delay. • Boundary-value problems are obtained as quasi-normal forms. • The delay-dependent direction (super- or subcritical) of bifurcation is determined. • Delay intervals leading to anti- or in-phase oscillations in laser chain are obtained. We present a simple model for a patch antenna based on metamaterial concepts operating in the microwave region with a bandwidth of 1.9-2.6 GHz. The small size and the relatively large operational band make this device exploitable for electromagnetic energy harvesting in urban environments. Describing the antenna by an equivalent circuit composed of a transmission line having right/left hand properties with a RC load, we can properly account for the phase dynamics in correspondence of resonances characterized by a specific handedness. Partial synchronous states appear between full synchrony and asynchrony and exhibit many interesting properties. Most frequently, these states are studied within the framework of phase approximation. The latter is used ubiquitously to analyze coupled oscillatory systems. Typically, the phase dynamics description is obtained in the weak coupling limit, i.e., in the first-order in the coupling strength. The extension beyond the first-order represents an unsolved problem and is an active area of research. In this paper, three partially synchronous states are investigated and presented in order of increasing complexity. First, the usage of the phase response curve for the description of macroscopic oscillators is analyzed. To achieve this, the response of the mean-field oscillations in a model of all-to-all coupled limit-cycle oscillators to pulse stimulation is measured. The next part treats a two-group Kuramoto model, where the interaction of one attractive and one repulsive group results in an interesting solitary state, situated between full synchrony and self-consistent partial synchrony. In the last part, the phase dynamics of a relatively simple system of three Stuart-Landau oscillators are extended beyond the weak coupling limit. The resulting model contains triplet terms in the high-order phase approximation, though the structural connections are only pairwise. The change in the phase, from quiescence to surge, may perturb the glacier's dynamical behavior. To understand these changes through geospatial technique, the fastest moving tidewater Monacobreen Glacier, Svalbard, was studied for the year 2016–2019. It was elucidated that the surge had initiated during 2017–2018 before it the glacier was in quiescence since 2001. Initially, the glacier radar zones, namely percolation refreeze, lower percolation, and clean ice, were identified using the multi-temporal SAR data. These zones were utilized to delineate the equilibrium line altitude, and it was found that it is continuously moving down during surging, unlike the quiescence phase. The accumulation area ratio was always more than 0.67 throughout the analysis. The seasonal change in glacier surface velocity for both the phases was estimated, adapting the most appropriate Offset Tracking approach using the SAR data. The mean velocity over the main trunk was found to vary from 0.5 to 4 m/day. Thereafter, Glen's flow law equation was used to estimate the ice-thickness and found that the glacier has an average thickness range of 216–326 m in quiescence and 136–244 m during the surging. The analysis depicted that the basal shear stresses are increasing with surging, and the viscosity is decreasing. It can be said that the transition of the glacier from quiescent to surging phase has entirely changed its dynamic behavior and characteristics. Further, in the absence of field observations, the geospatial technique may provide reasonable estimates of the glacier's physical and dynamical parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oscillatory dynamics pervades the universe, appearing in systems of all scales. Whilst autonomous oscillatory dynamics has been extensively studied and is well understood, the very important problem of non-autonomous oscillatory dynamics is less well understood. Here, we provide a framework for non-autonomous oscillatory dynamics, within which we can define intermittent phenomena such as intermittent phase synchronisation. Batch production of continuous and uniform graphene films is critical for the application of graphene. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has shown great promise for mass producing high-quality graphene films. However, the critical factors affected the uniformity of graphene films during the batch production need to be further studied. Herein, we propose a method for batch production of uniform graphene films by controlling the gaseous carbon source to be uniformly distributed near the substrate surface. By designing the growth space of graphene into a rectangular channel structure, we adjusted the velocity of feedstock gas flow to be uniformly distributed in the channel, which is critical for uniform graphene growth. The monolayer graphene film grown inside the rectangular channel structure shows high uniformity with average sheet resistance of 345 Ω sq−1 without doping. The experimental and simulation results show that the placement of the substrates during batch growth of graphene films will greatly affect the distribution of gas-phase dynamics near the substrate surface and the growth process of graphene. The study of hyperbolic waves involves various notions which help characterise how these structures evolve. One important facet is the notion of genuine nonlinearity, namely the ability for shocks and rarefactions to form instead of contact discontinuities. In the context of the Whitham modulation equations, this paper demonstrate that a loss of genuine nonlinearity leads to the appearance of a dispersive set of dynamics in the form of the modified Korteweg de-Vries equation governing the evolution of the waves instead. Its form is universal in the sense that its coefficients can be written entirely using linear properties of the underlying waves such as the conservation laws and linear dispersion relation. This insight is applied to two systems of physical interest, one an optical model and the other a stratified hydrodynamics experiment, to demonstrate how it can be used to provide insight into how waves in these systems evolve when genuine nonlinearity is lost. Reynolds stress is a key facet of turbulence self-organization. In the magnetized plasmas of controlled fusion devices, the zonal flows that are driven by the averaged Reynolds stress modify the confinement performance. We address this problem with full-f gyrokinetic simulations of ion temperature gradient-driven turbulence. From the detailed analysis of the three-dimensional electric potential and transverse pressure fields, we show that the diamagnetic contribution to the Reynolds stress—stemming from finite Larmor radius effects—exceeds the electrostatic contribution by a factor of about two. Both contributions are in phase, indicating that pressure does not behave as a passive scalar. In addition, the Reynolds stress induced by the electric drift velocity is found to be mainly governed by the gradient of the phase of the electric potential modes rather than by their magnitude. By decoupling Reynolds stress drive and turbulence intensity, this property indicates that a careful analysis of phase dynamics is crucial in the interpretation of experiments and simulations. Understanding the pathways and time scales underlying electrically driven insulator-metal transitions is crucial for uncovering the fundamental limits of device operation. Using stroboscopic electron diffraction, we perform synchronized time-resolved measurements of atomic motions and electronic transport in operating vanadium dioxide (VO2) switches. We discover an electrically triggered, isostructural state that forms transiently on microsecond time scales, which is shown by phase-field simulations to be stabilized by local heterogeneities and interfacial interactions between the equilibrium phases. This metastable phase is similar to that formed under photoexcitation within picoseconds, suggesting a universal transformation pathway. Our results establish electrical excitation as a route for uncovering nonequilibrium and metastable phases in correlated materials, opening avenues for engineering dynamical behavior in nanoelectronics. time dependent thermal model for a superconducting constriction based weak-link (WL) is discussed for investigating the deterministic dynamics of its temperature and phase. A new dynamic regime is found where a non-zero voltage exists across the WL, and its temperature stabilizes between the bath temperature and superconductor's critical temperature. This regime exists over a limited bias current range and gives rise to a new hysteretic regime in current-voltage characteristics. The two-step quench process of surface-directed spinodal decomposition is numerically investigated by coupling the Flory–Huggins–de Gennes equation with the Cahn–Hilliard–Cook equation. The phase dynamics and formation mechanisms of the wetting layer in two-step surface-directed spinodal decomposition have been concerned in detail. The results demonstrate that a parallel strip structure forms near the wetting layer and propagates into the bulk, when the first quench depth is very shallow and the bulk does not undergo phase separation, and the second quench depths are various points with deeper quench depths. In this case, the wetting layer turns to be unchangeable at the intermediate and later stages of the second quench process, compared to the growth with a time exponent 1/2 during the first quench process. When the first quench depth is deeper and phase separation occurs in the bulk during the first quench process, it is found that a deeper second quench depth can stimulate a more obvious secondary domain structure, and the formation mechanism of the wetting layer changes from logarithmic growth law to Lifshitz–Slyozov growth law. We investigate the quantum-phase dynamics of a dissipative molecular system interacting with a single-mode amplitude-squeezed field (with a sub-Poissonian photon-number distribution) using the Monte Carlo wave-function method. As quantum dissipation, we consider molecular coherent (phase) and population relaxations, which are caused by nuclear vibration, and cavity relaxation (the dissipation of an internal single mode to outer mode). In this study, we elucidate the effects of these dissipations on the unique quantum dynamical behaviors of this coupled system, e.g., collapse-revival behavior of Rabi oscillations, using the quasiprobability (Q function) distribution of a single-mode field and the off-diagonal molecular density matrix. It is found that although the amplitude-squeezed field exhibits a distinct revival with larger amplitudes of molecular population in the presence of the molecular phase and population relaxations as compared to the coherent field, a very slight cavity relaxation suppresses the revival of molecular population and the increase in the magnitude of off-diagonal molecular density matrices during the quiescent region in the amplitude-squeezed field case more significantly than in the coherent field case. These features are shown to be closely related to the difference in the dynamics of Q function distributions between amplitude-squeezed and coherent fields. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. Using in situ methods to characterize the state of a system during reactions is critical to understanding and improving solvothermal syntheses. This work demonstrates the use of in situ energy‐dispersive X‐ray diffraction (EDXRD) to investigate the local dynamics during solvothermal formation of Cu4O3 using a general‐purpose full‐sized laboratory oven. This allows for direct comparison of in situ data with laboratory‐based reactions. Using in situ EDXRD, changes in the local amounts of Cu4O3, Cu2O and CuO within approximately 100 × 100 × 700 µm gauge volumes during solvothermal Cu4O3 formation were recorded. Fast conversion between Cu2O and CuO was observed in the solvothermal environment, whereas Cu4O3 was found to be chemically stable against disturbances once formed. • Unimolecular dissociation of C 6 H 6 -C 6 H 6 complex is studied in N 2 bath model. • At N 2 -bath density of 20 kg/m3 (17.5 atm) shows similar behavior of the dissociation as does in the gas phase dynamics. • At higher bath density there is no direct dissociation of the complex and the dynamics is entirely different. Chemical dynamics simulations are performed to study the dissociation of excited benzene-hexafluorobenzene (Bz-HFB) complex in N 2 bath and the results are compared with the gas phase dynamics. Two N 2 bath densities 20 and 750 kg/m3 are considered. Bz-HFB is excited with respect to the temperatures of 1000, 1500, and 2000 K at each bath density. The nature of the Bz-HFB* dissociation dynamics at the bath density of 20 kg/m3 is quite similar to gas phase one, but the same is drastically different at high bath density where energy transfer pathway dominates over dissociation and negligible direct dissociation of Bz-HFB* is reported. Human color vision is achieved by mixing neural signals from cone photoreceptors sensitive to different wavelengths of light. The spatial arrangement and proportion of these spectral types in the retina set fundamental limits on color perception, and abnormal or missing types are responsible for color vision loss. Imaging provides the most direct and quantitative means to study these photoreceptor properties at the cellular scale in the living human retina, but remains challenging. Current methods rely on retinal densitometry to distinguish cone types, a prohibitively slow process. Here, we show that photostimulation-induced optical phase changes occur in cone cells and carry substantial information about spectral type, enabling cones to be differentiated with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency. Moreover, these phase dynamics arise from physiological activity occurring on dramatically different timescales (from milliseconds to seconds) inside the cone outer segment, thus exposing the phototransduction cascade and subsequent downstream effects. We captured these dynamics in cones of subjectswith normal color vision and a deuteranope, and at different macular locations by: (i) marrying adaptive optics to phase-sensitive optical coherence tomography to avoid optical blurring of the eye, (ii) acquiring images at high speed that samples phase dynamics at up to 3 KHz, and (iii) localizing phase changes to the cone outer segment, where photoactivation occurs. Our method should have broad appeal for color vision applications in which the underlying neural processing of photoreceptors is sought and for investigations of retinal diseases that affect cone function. Aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is a devastating subset of stroke. One of the major determinates of morbidity is the development of delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI). Disruption of the nitric oxide (NO) pathway and consequently the control of cerebral blood flow (CBF), known as cerebral autoregulation, is believed to play a role in its pathophysiology. Through the pharmacological manipulation of in vivo NO levels using an exogenous NO donor we sought to explore this relationship. Phase synchronisation index (PSI), an expression of the interdependence between CBF and arterial blood pressure (ABP) and thus cerebral autoregulation, was calculated before and during sodium nitrite administration in 10 high-grade SAH patients acutely post-rupture. In patients that did not develop DCI, there was a significant increase in PSI around 0.1 Hz during the administration of sodium nitrite (33%; p-value 0.006). In patients that developed DCI, PSI did not change significantly. Synchronisation between ABP and CBF at 0.1 Hz has been proposed as a mechanism by which organ perfusion is maintained, during periods of physiological stress. In this work, the scaling behavior of the sleep process is evaluated by using detrended fluctuation analysis based on wavelets. The analysis is carried out from arrivals of short and recurrent cortical events called A-phases, which in turn build up the Cyclic Alternating Pattern phenomenon, and are classified in three types: A1, A2 and A3. In this study, 61 sleep recordings corresponding to healthy, nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy patients and sleep-state misperception subjects, were analyzed. From the A-phase annotations, the onsets were extracted and a binary sequence with one second resolution was generated. An item in the sequence has a value of one if an A-phase onset occurs in the corresponding window, and a value of zero otherwise. In addition, we consider other different temporal resolutions from 2 s to 256 s. Furthermore, the same analysis was carried out for sequences obtained from the different types of A-phases and their combinations. The results of the numerical analysis showed a relationship between the time resolutions and the scaling exponents; specifically, for higher time resolutions a white noise behavior is observed, whereas for lower time resolutions a behavior towards to 1 / f -noise is exhibited. Statistical differences among groups were observed by applying various wavelet functions from the Daubechies family and choosing the appropriate sequence of A-phase onsets. This scaling analysis allows the characterization of the free-scale dynamic of the sleep process that is specific for each sleep condition. We have studied both theoretically and experimentally how an LC series circuit connected in parallel to a Josephson junction influences the Josephson dynamics. The presence of the shell circuit introduces two energy scales, which in specific cases, can strongly differ from the plasma frequency of the isolated junction. Josephson junctions were manufactured using the Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb fabrication technology with various on-chip LC shunt circuits. Spectroscopic measurements in the quantum limit show excellent agreement with theory taking into account the shunt inductance and capacitance in the resistively and capacitively shunted junction model. The results clearly show that the dynamics of the system are two-dimensional, resulting in two resonant modes of the system. We report a systematic study of the transport properties of high critical temperature superconductor (HTS) biepitaxial Josephson junctions in the submicron range. Junction performances point to more uniform and reproducible devices and to better control of d-wave intrinsic properties. Outcomes promote novel insights into the transport mechanisms across grain boundaries and encourage further developments in the control of dissipation in HTS devices. The application of nanotechnology to HTS could be an additional tool to properly engineer the junction properties to match specific circuit design also in view of the integration into hybrid quantum circuits. The approximate quantum mechanical ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD) and linearized semiclassical initial value representation (LSC-IVR) methods are compared and contrasted in a study of the dynamics of the flexible q-TIP4P/F water model at room temperature. For this water model, a RPMD simulation gives a diffusion coefficient that is only a few percent larger than the classical diffusion coefficient, whereas a LSC-IVR simulation gives a diffusion coefficient that is three times larger. We attribute this discrepancy to the unphysical leakage of initially quantized zero point energy (ZPE) from the intramolecular to the intermolecular modes of the liquid as the LSC-IVR simulation progresses. In spite of this problem, which is avoided by construction in RPMD, the LSC-IVR may still provide a useful approximation to certain short-time dynamical properties which are not so strongly affected by the ZPE leakage. We illustrate this with an application to the liquid water dipole absorption spectrum, for which the RPMD approximation breaks down at frequencies in the O–H stretching region owing to contamination from the internal modes of the ring polymer. The LSC-IVR does not suffer from this difficulty and it appears to provide quite a promising way to calculate condensed phase vibrational spectra. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the intermolecular-interaction (dipole-dipole interaction) effects on the quantum dynamics of dimer density matrices and photon-phase distributions using several dimer models with different intermolecular distances in the presence of a two-mode squeezed vacuum field. In this photon field, each mode is initially correlated and the reduced one-mode photon distribution is equivalent with that of a thermal field. For comparison, we perform parallel studies, in which the initial fields are two types of noncorrelated two-mode fields, i.e., a two-mode coherent field and a two-mode thermal field. It is found that although the two-mode squeezed vacuum field causes the random oscillations of dimer populations in the noninteracting dimer, the periodic oscillations like the collapse-revival behavior emerge as the intermolecular distance decreases (the intermolecular interaction increases). Similar and dissimilar features among quantum dynamics caused by these three types of fields are investigated by analyzing the dynamical behavior of two-mode PeggBarnett photon-phase distributions and off-diagonal dimer density matrices, which indicate the coherency between dimer states. In addition to the quantum statistical properties of initial photon field, the change in the degree of contribution between one- and two-photon processes caused by the intermolecular interaction is found to be important to determine these features. It is well-known that the interaction among atoms/molecules and quantized electromagnetic fields with a small number of photons provides a peculiar quantum nature, i.e., collapses and revivals in the Rabi oscillations. In this study, we investigate the intermolecular interaction (dipole-dipole interaction) effect on the collapse-revival behavior using several dimer models (composed of two kinds of two-state monomers with slightly different excitation energies) with different intermolecular distances in the presence of a two-mode squeezed coherent field, in which each mode is initially correlated. It is found that although the collapse-revival behavior is fairly overlapped and indistinct in the case of a noninteracting dimer under the present two-mode squeezed coherent field, the decrease in the intermolecular distance (the increase in the intermolecular interaction) resurrects relatively distinct collapse-revival behavior with longer collapse and revival times. By analyzing the quantum behavior from the viewpoint of the dynamics of two-mode Pegg-Barnett photon-phase distributions and off-diagonal dimer density matrices, this feature is found to closely relate to a significant change in the degree of contribution between one- and two-photon processes caused by the variation in the intermolecular interaction. We consider networks of coupled phase oscillators of different complexity: Kuramoto–Daido-type networks, generalized Winfree networks, and hypernetworks with triple interactions. For these setups an inverse problem of reconstruction of the network connections and of the coupling function from the observations of the phase dynamics is addressed. We show how a reconstruction based on the minimization of the squared error can be implemented in all these cases. Examples include random networks with full disorder both in the connections and in the coupling functions, as well as networks where the coupling functions are taken from experimental data of electrochemical oscillators. We attempted to elucidate early-phase dynamics of HIV-1 infection using replication-competent, red-fluorescent-protein (mCherry)-labeled HIV-1 JR-FL (HIV JR-FL mC ) and NOD/SCID/Jak3 -/- mice transplanted with Individual-A's human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (hPBMC)(hNOJ mice). On day 7 following HIV JR-FL mC inoculation, mCherry-signal-emitting infection foci were readily identified in the subserosa of 10 of 10 HIV JR-FL mC -inoculated hNOJ mice, although infection foci were not located without the mCherry signal in unlabeled HIV-1 JR-FL -inoculated mice (n = 6). Even on day 14, infection foci were hardly located in the unlabeled HIV-1 JR-FL -inoculated mice, while in all of 7 HIV JR-FL mC -inoculated hNOJ mice examined, mCherry-signal-emitting lymph nodes were easily identified, in which active viral replication was present. On day 14, a significantly larger number of mesenteric lymph nodes were seen in HIV JR-FL mC -exposed hNOJ mice than in HIV JR-FL mC -unexposed mice ( P = 0 . 0025 ). The weights of mesenteric lymph nodes of those HIV JR-FL mC -exposed hNOJ mice were also greater than those of HIV JR-FL mC -unexposed mice ( P = 0 . 0005 ). When hNOJ mice were inoculated with HIV JR-FL mC -exposed hPBMC from Individual-B, significantly greater viremia was seen than in cell-free HIV JR-FL mC -inoculated hNOJ mice as examined on day 7. In the lymph nodes of those mice inoculated with HIV JR-FL mC -exposed hPBMC from Individual-B, a substantial number of Individual-B's HIV JR-FL mC -infected cells were identified together with Individual-A's cells as examined on day 14. The present HIV JR-FL mC -infected mouse model represents the first system reported using traceable HIV JR-FL mC and human target cells, not using SIV or simian cells, which should be of utility in studies of early-phases of HIV-1 transmission and in evaluating the effects of potential agents for post-exposure and pre-exposure prophylaxis. This paper considers the output consensus problem in non-minimum phase nonlinear multi-agent systems. The main contribution of the paper is to guarantee achieving consensus in the presence of unstable zero dynamics. To achieve this goal, a consensus protocol consisting of two terms is proposed. The first term is a linear function of the states of each agent employed in order to overcome the non-minimum phase dynamics, and the second term is a function of the output of neighbouring agents which provides coupling among agents and guarantees output consensus in the network. The asymptotic stability of output consensus errors and the boundedness of the states of agents are also studied. A numerical example is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Cell viability and cytotoxicity assays are highly important for drug screening and cytotoxicity tests of antineoplastic or other therapeutic drugs. Even though biochemical-based tests are very helpful to obtain preliminary preview, their results should be confirmed by methods based on direct cell death assessment. In this study, time-dependent changes in quantitative phase-based parameters during cell death were determined and methodology useable for rapid and label-free assessment of direct cell death was introduced. The goal of our study was distinction between apoptosis and primary lytic cell death based on morphologic features. We have distinguished the lytic and non-lytic type of cell death according to their end-point features (Dance of Death typical for apoptosis versus swelling and membrane rupture typical for all kinds of necrosis common for necroptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis and accidental cell death). Our method utilizes Quantitative Phase Imaging (QPI) which enables the time-lapse observation of subtle changes in cell mass distribution. According to our results, morphological and dynamical features extracted from QPI micrographs are suitable for cell death detection (76% accuracy in comparison with manual annotation). Furthermore, based on QPI data alone and machine learning, we were able to classify typical dynamical changes of cell morphology during both caspase 3,7-dependent and -independent cell death subroutines. The main parameters used for label-free detection of these cell death modalities were cell density (pg/pixel) and average intensity change of cell pixels further designated as Cell Dynamic Score (CDS). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study introducing CDS and cell density as a parameter typical for individual cell death subroutines with prediction accuracy 75.4% for caspase 3,7-dependent and -independent cell death. The phase of low-frequency, rhythmic cortical activity is essential for organizing brain processes because it provides a recurrent temporal frame for information coding. However, the low-frequency cortical phase exhibits great flexibility in response to external influences. Given that brain rhythms have been found to track respiratory inputs, we hypothesized that slow breathing, commonly associated with mental regulation, could reorganize the relationship between these two rhythmic systems through the adjustment of the cortical phase to such a slow train of inputs. Based on simultaneous magnetoencephalography and respiratory measurements, we report that while participants performed paced breathing, slow relative to normal breathing modulated cortical phase activity in the alpha range across widespread brain areas. Such modulation effects were specifically locked to the middle of the inspiration stage and exhibited a well-structured pattern. At the single-subject level, the phase angles underlying the effects became more likely to be diametrically opposed across breaths, indicating unique and consistent phase adjustment to slow inspiratory inputs. Neither cardiac fluctuations nor breathing-unrelated task effects could account for the findings. We suggest that slow-paced inspiration could organize the cortical phase in a regularized phase pattern, revealing a rhythmic but dynamic neural network integrated with different neurophysiological systems through volitional control. Background: Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is prognostic in first-generation radioimmunoassays. We examined GDF-15 temporal dynamics in STEMI and its predictive value using a first fully automated GDF-15 electrochemiluminescence assay. Methods: In this prospective study, circulating GDF-15 concentration was measured at admission (0 h), 12 h and 24 h in 1026 consecutive STEMI patients treated between February 2011 and May 2016 with primary percutaneous coronary intervention. GDF-15 dynamics (0 h, 12 h, 24 h) and predictive value (30 days and 3 years) were examined. Results: Median GDF-15 concentration was 1443 pg/mL at 0 h, 1731 pg/mL at 12 h and 1510 pg/mL at 24 h (p<0.001). During follow-up, 94 patients died (9.2%) and 154 (15.0%) were hospitalized. GDF-15 was a strong predictor of 30-day mortality (hazard ratio [HR] 1.76, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.33–2.34 at 0 h; HR 2.99 [95% CI, 2.18–4.09] at 12 h, and HR 1.97 [95% CI, 1.47–2.63] at 24 h) in multivariable Cox proportional hazards models. GDF-15 improved discrimination and reclassification of a clinical risk model. GDF-15 was also associated with 3-year mortality (HR 1.31 [95% CI, 1.04–1.65] at 0 h, HR 1.42 [95% CI, 1.10–1.84] at 12 h, and HR 1.51 [95% CI, 1.16–1.96] at 24 h) and 3-year composite of mortality and cardiovascular hospitalization (HR 1.17 [95% CI, 1.01–1.37] at 0 h, HR 1.20 [95% CI, 1.02–1.42] at 12 h, and HR 1.27 [95% CI, 1.08–1.50] at 24 h). Conclusions: GDF-15 peaked at 12 h and remained elevated at 24 h in STEMI. GDF-15 measurement during the first 24 h in STEMI is valuable for predicting especially short- but also long-term outcomes, and may be a useful addition to risk stratification. Polymer characterizations are often performed using mass spectrometry (MS). Aside from MS and different tandem MS (MS/MS) techniques, ion mobility–mass spectrometry (IM-MS) has been recently added to the inventory of characterization technique. However, only few studies have focused on the reproducibility and robustness of polymer IM-MS analyses. Here, we perform collisional and electron-mediated activation of polymer ions before measuring IM drift times, collision cross-sections (CCS), or reduced ion mobilities (K0). The resulting IM behavior of different activated product ions is then compared to non-activated native intact polymer ions. First, we analyzed collision induced unfolding (CIU) of precursor ions to test the robustness of polymer ion shapes. Then, we focused on fragmentation product ions to test for shape retentions from the precursor ions: cation ejection species (CES) and product ions with m/z and charge state values identical to native intact polymer ions. The CES species are formed using both collision induced dissociation (CID) and electron transfer dissociation (ETD, formally ETnoD) experiments. Only small drift time, CCS, or K0 deviations between the activated/formed ions are observed compared to the native intact polymer ions. The polymer ion shapes seem to depend solely on their mass and charge state. The experiments were performed on three synthetic homopolymers: poly(ethoxy phosphate) (PEtP), poly(2-n-propyl-2-oxazoline) (Pn-PrOx), and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). These results confirm the robustness of polymer ion CCSs for IM calibration, especially singly charged polymer ions. Picosecond transient grating experiments in sodium and iodine vapors, involving the 3S→3P and X→B transitions, respectively, are discussed in detail. Population gratings in sodium demonstrate that the technique can be used to measure velocity distributions in the gas phase. It is shown that the time dependent transient grating signal is related to the Fourier transform of the velocity distribution. Similar experiments on iodine illustrate the effect of state changing collisions on the grating signal. Theoretical calculations for a model in which the change of state is caused by a single collision are given. Close agreement with the data is observed for the situation in which the collision takes the initial velocity into a random velocity distribution. From this model a collision cross section is determined. The results demonstrate that information on collision dynamics can be obtained from grating experiments. In addition, the sodium experiments are used to illustrate a new type of time domain high resolution spectroscopy. When the grating excitation pulses have perpendicular polarizations, a polarization grating, rather than the usual population grating, is formed. Diffraction from the sodium polarization grating shows larger time dependent oscillations in the diffraction efficiency. These oscillations yield the ground state and excited state hyperfine frequencies (1.77 GHz and 189 MHz, respectively). A detailed theoretical description of the origin of the oscillations is presented. We present a brief discussion of the phase-coherent dynamics of discrete breathers (intrinsic localized modes) in a system of two weakly coupled nonlinear chains and its comparison with periodic tunneling of quantum particles in a double-well potential and with macroscopic quantum tunneling of two weakly linked Bose–Einstein condensates. We consider the dynamics of relative phase of classically-tunneling discrete breathers in two weakly coupled nonlinear chains and show that the dynamics of the relative phase in the π/2 tunneling mode coincides with the experimentally observed dynamics of the relative phase of quantum particles, periodically tunneling in a double-well potential, both for noninteracting and strongly repulsively interacting particles. The observed coincidence demonstrates the correspondence between the dynamics of classical localized excitations in two weakly coupled nonlinear chains and tunneling dynamics of quantum object in the double-well potential. We show that in both π/2 and winding tunneling modes the relative phase experiences periodic jumps by π in the instants of complete depopulation of one of the weakly coupled chains or potential wells. Fundamental understanding of micro-mechanical behaviors in bitumen, including phase separation, micro-friction, micro-abrasion, etc., can help the pavement engineers better understand the bitumen mechanical performances at macroscale. Recent researches show that the microstructure evolution in bitumen will directly affect its surface structure and micro-mechanical performance. In this study, the bitumen microstructure and micro-mechanical behaviors are studied using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) experiments, Phase Dynamics Theory and Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulation. The AFM experiment results show that different phase-structure will occur at the surface of the bitumen samples under certain thermodynamic conditions at microscale. The phenomenon can be explained using the phase dynamics theory, where the effects of stability parameter and temperature on bitumen microstructure and micro-mechanical behavior are studied combined with MD Simulation. Simulation results show that the saturates phase, in contrast to the naphthene aromatics phase, plays a major role in bitumen micro-mechanical behavior. A high stress zone occurs at the interface between the saturates phase and the naphthene aromatics phase, which may form discontinuities that further affect the bitumen frictional performance. Although Mn-Ga alloys are discussed as novel permanent magnetic materials, there are several drawbacks, including the high price of Ga and the yet too small saturation magnetization to name a few. We used several guidelines to motivate the replacement of Ga by Sn to tackle these issues and explored the phase formation, structural and magnetic properties of a Mn 2.6 Ga 1− x Sn x alloy series. The structure of Sn-rich samples is dominated by the corresponding hexagonal and orthorhombic phases, while the structure of Ga-rich samples shows additional contributions from the tetragonal DO 22 structure. However, formation of the tetragonal phase happens only upon an appropriate annealing procedure. In contrast to the discussion in the literature, our experiments do not hint on the tetragonal DO 22 structure being metastable, but rather indicate the DO 22 structure being an equilibrium phase. In general, the experimentally found phase fractions impact on the magnetic properties and hard magnetic properties are downgraded very rapidly even if only a small amount of Ga is substituted by Sn. This indicates that the DO 22 phase found only in the Ga-rich samples is indeed the one which is most relevant for realization of high magnetic anisotropy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Groundwater contamination from ethanol (e.g., alternative fuels) can support vigorous biodegradation, with many possible reactions producing dissolved gases. The objective of this study was to improve the understanding of the development and evolution of trapped gas phase changes occurring within an ethanol plume undergoing biodegradation. The experiment performed involved highly detailed spatial and temporal monitoring of gas phase saturations using Time Domain Reflectometry probes embedded in a 2-dimensional (175 cm high × 525 cm long) synthetic aquifer (homogeneous sand tank with horizontal groundwater flow). Ethanol injection immediately promoted gas-producing reactions, including: fermentation, denitrification, sulphate-reduction and iron(III)-reduction, with methanogenesis developing between 69 and 109 days. Substantial in situ increases in trapped gas were observed over ~330 days, with maximum gas saturations reaching 27% of the pore volume. Despite sustained gas production, this maximum was never exceeded, likely due to the onset of gas phase mobilization (i.e., ebullition) upon reaching a buoyancy-capillarity threshold. Reductions in the quasi-saturated hydraulic conductivity, resulting from the gas phase accumulation, were restricted by ebullition to a factor of ≤2; but still appeared to alter the groundwater flow field. Overall, trapped gas saturations exhibited high spatial and temporal variability, including declines within the plume and increases outside of the plume. Influential factors included vertically-shifting ethanol inputs and resultant secondary redox reactions, microbial controls on redox zonation, ebullition, and altered groundwater flows. These observations have implications for the transport of gases and volatile compounds within plumes and above the water table at sites with groundwater contamination from ethanol or other highly degradable organics.
