Bottom trawl fisheries often catch several species simultaneously. However, most studies addressing the catch performance and selectivity of a specific trawl focus on a few commercially important or most vulnerable species requiring management measures. By contrast, the present study considers the multispecies nature of Mediterranean bottom trawl fisheries through a holistic approach that accounts for the full species community in the catches. Specifically, we evaluated and compared the catch performance of the two codends allowed for this fishery, made of 40 mm square (SM40) and 50 mm diamond (DM50) meshes. Results showed that 50 and 80% of the catch in weight and count numbers, respectively, consisted of species without commercial value, demonstrating that large proportions of the catch are not considered when using the existing approach to evaluate the ecological impact of the fishing activity. Significant differences in catch profiles between the two codends were observed, especially for two commercial flatfish species, Arnoglossus laterna and Citharus linguatula, with larger contributions in the SM40. Further, the SM40 codend had a significantly higher retention, compared to DM50 codend, for specific sizes of Merluccius merluccius and Mullus barbatus. Interactions between fishing and dolphins can be detrimental, since on one hand dolphins can be lethally entangled by nets and trawls, and on the other dolphins can predate fish caught by nets. For dolphins, this interaction can be dangerous as they can be wounded or accidentally killed; for fishers, the predation of their catch results in economic losses due to reduced quantity and/or quality of catches and damage to fishing gear. During July and November 2020, we surveyed the "dolphin–fisheries conflict" through compiling 209 fisher interviews from nine locations in Italy and Croatia. Fishers mentioned the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) as the species primarily interacting with fishing, with the major issue being catch damage by predation. The interaction probability varied among gears and seasons, with some fishing activities (e.g., passive nets) more affected than others (e.g., bottom trawls), especially in terms of economic loss (1000–10,000 €/year on average). More than 70% of the fishers claimed that dolphin populations have increased over the last 10 years, in different degrees and based on different areas. Dolphin bycatch rates are generally low; however, 34.6% of respondents reported having captured at least one dolphin during their career. Small-scale coastal fisheries in the Mediterranean often employ gillnets, a widely used gear worldwide. The disadvantages of gillnets in this fishery include high bycatch levels of unwanted species and consequent discards. Moreover, spatial conflict with other gears and dolphin depredation often results in considerable economic loss. Alternative fishing methods are being tested. This study investigated whether, in small-scale fisheries in the Adriatic Sea, pots can ensure sustainable harvest of mantis shrimp (Squilla mantis), a major target demersal species in terms of landings, and possibly replace traditional gillnets. We adopted a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the catch efficiency, biological impact, and socio-economic effects of the two fishing methods. We found different species compositions in gillnet and pot catches. Gillnets yielded a greater number of discarded species of no commercial value, whereas pots caught a greater amount of mantis shrimp. Finally, a profit analysis indicated that pot fishery has the potential to increase profits for the commercial fishing industry. Stock overexploitation, bycatch, discards and gear impacts on the environment are outstanding issues for Mediterranean fisheries. The adoption of alternative fishing gears is an appealing solution to ensure a more sustainable exploitation of resources. We discuss the pros and cons of pots as alternative gears by reviewing their main designs, spatial distribution and target species in the Mediterranean basin. We assessed the technical factors affecting the catch efficiency of the different pot designs for four target species: spiny lobster, Palinurus elephas; Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus; common octopus, Octopus vulgaris and pandalid shrimps, Plesionika spp. We found that pot volume is important to catch Octopus; mesh size to catch Nephrops and Plesionika; entrance surface to catch Octopus, Nephrops and Plesionika; pot shape/colour and entrance shape/position to catch Octopus and Plesionika; and bait type to catch Octopus and Nephrops. The literature review shows that pot fisheries have several considerable advantages over conventional gears, especially in terms of discards, bycatch, seabed impacts (particularly compared with bottom trawls and passive set nets), size and species selectivity, gear depredation, catch quality and gear cost, besides saving time and labour. Disadvantages hampering their wider diffusion include ghost fishing, a low catch of finfish species, the narrow range of species targeted by each pot design and the current early stage of research. The use of laboratory animals in biomedical research is a matter of intense public debate. Recent statistics indicates that about half of the western population, sensitive to this discussion, would be in favor of animal testing while the other half would oppose it. Here, outlining scientific, historical, ethical, and philosophical aspects, we provide an integrated view explaining the reasons why biomedical research can hardly abandon laboratory animal testing. In this paper, we retrace the historical moments that mark the relationship between humans and other animal species. Then starting from Darwin's position on animal experimentation, we outline the steps that over time allowed the introduction of laws and rules that regulate animals' use in biomedical research. In our analysis, we present the perspectives of various authors, with the aim of delineating a theoretical framework within which to insert the ethical debate on laboratory animals research. Through the analysis of fundamental philosophical concepts and some practical examples, we propose a view according to which laboratory animals experimentation become ethically acceptable as far as it is guided by the goal of improving humans and other animal species (i.e., pets) life. Among the elements analyzed, there is the concept of responsibility that only active moral subjects (humans) have towards themselves and towards passive moral subjects (other animal species). We delineate the principle of cruelty that is useful to understand why research in laboratory animals should not be assimilated to a cruel act. Moreover, we touch upon the concepts of necessity and "good cause" to underline that, if biomedical research would have the possibility to avoid using animals, it would surely do that. To provide an example of the negative consequences occurring from not allowing laboratory animal research, we analyze the recent experience of Covid‐19 epidemic. Finally, recalling the principle of "heuristics and biases" by Kahneman, we discuss why scientists should reconsider the way they are conveying information about their research to the general public. The striped venus clam (Chamelea gallina) is the main edible bivalve living in Italian waters. According to Regulation (EU) 2020/2237, undersized specimens (total length of the shell, < 22 mm) must be returned to the sea. C. gallina specimens of different size classes that had undergone hydraulic dredging and mechanized sorting were analysed for reburial ability in a laboratory tank and for survivability in the laboratory (135 clams, 21 days) and at sea (320 clams, 15 days). In the tank experiments, the reburial times (T50 and T90) and the upper (+) and lower (−) confidence intervals (CIs) of the whole sample were about 4 h (CI+ 4.4, CI− 3.6) and 8 h (CI+ 8.2, CI− 7.7), respectively, and were significantly shorter for the medium-sized clams (22–24.9 mm) than for the smallest (< 21.9 mm) and the largest (> 25 mm) specimens. For the field survivability experiments, clams under and above the minimum conservation reference size were placed in separate metal cages. Survival rates were 94.8% and 96.2% respectively in the laboratory and at sea, without significant differences between the two experiments or among size classes. These findings conclusively demonstrate that C. gallina specimens returned to the sea have a very high survival probability and that they can contribute to mitigate the overexploitation of natural populations. Alveolar capillary dysplasia with misalignment of pulmonary veins (ACD/MPV) is a rare but fatal lung disorder, which causes persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) and which is unresponsive to treatment. We report the case of two siblings, both of whom died a few hours after birth because of severe pulmonary failure. Post-mortem histology confirmed ACD/MPV as the cause of death in both cases, and genetic analysis identified the same 16p13.3 deletion. ACD/MPV can occur suddenly in apparently healthy newborns after a regular pregnancy, and always leads to death. Nevertheless, an autopsy is not always performed after the death of an infant. For these reasons ACD/MPV represents a challenge for diagnosis and therapeutic management with medicolegal implications. Prenatal assessment of ACD/MPV is very difficult, and it should be suspected when irreversible and persistent fetal circulation occurs rapidly in newborns. An early diagnosis during pregnancy would facilitate adequate counselling regarding treatment and prognosis. When death occurs, a complete autopsy with histological and genetic investigations is recommended in order to define the exact cause of death, and potentially inform appropriate genetic counselling of family members who could be affected by hereditary disorders. Length–weight relationships of bivalve species collected during razor clam (Ensis minor) surveys along Italian coastal waters (Northern Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Sea) in the 3-year period 2016–2018 are reported. A total of 13,588 individuals, belonging to 12 bivalve species and 20 populations between the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Seas, were sampled for this study. Analyzing growth parameters for each population, we found 11 allometries and nine isometries. About half of the species investigated showed different growth characteristics between the two areas. The striped venus clam Chamelea gallina is the target of a large fleet of hydraulic dredgers, which represent an important fishing sector in terms of income and landings in the Mediterranean Sea. Although there is information on the catch rates, impact and discards related to this fishery, the size selection process carried out by the dredge during trawl under commercial conditions is practically unknown. The present study aimed to fill this gap, assessing the selectivity of the gear at different haul durations. We demonstrated that 25% of the clams entering the dredge were not size selected by it. Clams with a length (i.e. maximum distance between anterior and posterior margins) of 18.9 mm had 50% retention probability and tow duration did not affect the size selection process in the dredge. The dredge catch efficiency was 79% in numbers of clams and 89% in weight. 58% of the clams caught were below the minimum conservation reference size of 25 mm. The study demonstrates that to land only the legal sizes of clams, the additional size selection process carried out on board the fishing vessels by the sorting sieves is necessary. The Mediterranean Sea is a biodiversity hotspot where intense fishing pressure is associated with high bycatch rates of protected species (sea turtles and cetaceans) and top predators (sharks). Since the conservation of these species has become a priority, fishery scientists are faced with the challenge of reducing incidental catch, which entails high rates of mortality. Among the species threatened by fishing activities, the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is a charismatic species considered as "vulnerable" at the global scale. In the Mediterranean Sea trawl nets are the gears with the highest probability of catching protected species incidentally. A new flexible Turtle Excluder Device (TED) was tested for the first time on commercial bottom trawlers to assess its effectiveness in reducing bycatch in the Mediterranean Sea. Analysis of the total catches of the hauls made with and without the TED showed that the difference in terms of weight was not significant. The catch of the main commercial species showed similar rates without a significant loss of size (i.e. total length) with the exception of the largest anglerfish (Lophius spp.). The bycatch of control nets included mostly rays and sharks, but never turtles, although the authors learned from the crews of other vessels operating in the same areas at the time of the trials that they had caught some loggerhead turtles. Our study demonstrates that TED scan be adopted without significantly affecting commercial catch. This informs fishers and managers for a practical and effective means that may reduce the bycatch of threatened species in coastal Mediterranean demersal multispecies fisheries. The measures involving gear modifications require significant investment but they are technically feasible and are capable of improving the conservation prospects of these endangered species. Cr(VI) is highly soluble and mobile in water solution and extremely toxic. In order to obtain a specific material with adsorption properties towards Cr(VI), and that can be used in environmental remediation of water contaminated with Cr(VI), one-step sol-gel technique, at low temperature (50 °C), has been optimized to prepare transparent silica-based xerogel monolith by using tetraethyl orthosilicate as precursor. The obtained xerogel, with disk shape, was fully characterized by Raman, BET, FE-SEM and XRD analysis. The results indicated that the material showed silica amorphous phase and high porosity. The study of the adsorption properties towards different concentrations of Cr(VI), in the form of HCrO4− in acidic condition, showed prominent results. The absorption kinetics were evaluated by studying different models, the final result showing that the absorption of Cr(VI) occurred through intra-particle diffusion process, following two steps, and that the absorption equilibrium is regulated by Freundlich isotherm model. The material can be restored by reducing the hazardous Cr(VI) to Cr(III), a less toxic form of chromium, by 1,5-diphenylcarbazide, and with successive treatment in acidic water. Passive acoustics are widely used to monitor the presence of dolphins in the marine environment. This study aims to introduce a low-cost and homemade approach for assembling a complete underwater microphone (i.e., the hydrophone), employing cheap and easy to obtain components. The hydrophone was assembled with two piezo disks connected in a balanced configuration and encased in a plastic container filled with plastic foam. The hydrophone's performance was validated by direct comparison with the commercially available AS-1 hydrophone (Aquarian Hydrophones, Anacortes, U.S.) on different underwater acoustic signals: artificial acoustic signals (ramp and multitone signals) and various dolphin vocalizations (whistle, echolocation clicks, and burst pulse signals). The sensitivity of the device's performance to changes in the emission source position was also tested. The results of the validation procedure on both artificial signals and real dolphin vocalizations showed that the significant cost savings associated with cheap technology had a minimal effect on the recording device's performance within the frequency range of 0–35 kHz. At this stage of experimentation, the global cost of the hydrophone could be estimated at a few euros, making it extremely price competitive when compared to more expensive commercially available models. In the future, this effective and low-cost technology would allow for continuous monitoring of the presence of free-ranging dolphins, significantly lowering the total cost of autonomous monitoring systems. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder associated with severe dementia, progressive cognitive decline, and irreversible memory loss. Although its etiopathogenesis is still unclear, the aggregation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides into supramolecular structures and their accumulation in the central nervous system play a critical role in the onset and progression of the disease. On such a premise, the inhibition of the early stages of Aβ aggregation is a potential prevention strategy for the treatment of AD. Since several natural occurring compounds, as well as metal-based molecules, showed promising inhibitory activities toward Aβ aggregation, we herein characterized the interaction of an organoruthenium derivative of curcumin with Aβ(1–40) and Aβ(1–42) peptides, and we evaluated its ability to inhibit the oligomerization/fibrillogenesis processes by combining in silico and in vitro methods. In general, besides being less toxic to neuronal cells, the derivative preserved the amyloid binding ability of the parent compound in terms of equilibrium dissociation constants but (most notably) was more effective both in retarding the formation and limiting the size of amyloid aggregates by virtue of a higher hindering effect on the amyloid–amyloid elongation surface. This paper aims to identify how cognitive and emotional self-regulation (SR) processes in infants from 0 to 36 months are defined within the Latin American academic context. A systematic review based on the PRISMA methodology was implemented to review the conceptual and operational definition of SR, the type of study, the country of origin of the authors, and the reference to the adequacy of the research to the specific cultural context of Latin America. Twenty-two papers that met the selection criteria were selected. The study identified four types of conceptual definitions for SR, each associated with different constructs or sets of constructs: executive functions, temperament, the integration of executive functions and temperament, and physiological homeostasis. These definitions were based on mainstream approaches to SR rather than being specific to the Latin American region. The study also found compatibility between the sample and some observed trends. On one hand, there was an underrepresentation of the Latin American population in high-impact publications on the subject. However, from 2010 to the present, there is evidence of growth in publications on SR in the analyzed sample. On the other hand, the sample also indicates a disparate representation of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in existing publications. Finally, concerning the adaptation to the cultural context of the research, a small number of studies addressed this variable in a specific and significant way. However, even in these cases, the approach is based on models and hypotheses that are limited to understanding the Latin American region's cultural, socioeconomic, and demographic diversity. • We systematically reviewed the conceptual and operational definitions of self-regulation in Latin American studies with samples aged 0-to 36-months. • We found four types of conceptual definitions linked with: executive functions, temperament, the integration of executive functions and temperament, and physiological homeostasis. • Findings showed that Latin American infants are underrepresented in high-impact publications referred to self-regulation. • Findings also showed disparate representation of Latin American countries in the literature. • Current models of self-regulation provide a limited consideration of the idiosyncratic Latin American diversity. Abstract: The aggregation of 3,8,13,18-tetramethyl-21H,23H-porphine-2,7,2,17-tetrapropionic acid (Coproporphyrin-I) has been investigated by UV–vis spectroscopy in aqueous solutions. The aggregation occurred by total neutralization of propionic groups and can be induced by alkaline salts, hydrogen peroxide or acidification. The hydrogen peroxide effect is investigated in the presence of different concentrations and it has been observed that only high concentrations favour the formation of H-aggregates. The dimerization constants in the several experimental conditions are reported. The H-dimers of Coproporphyrin-I in particular experimental conditions formed highly aggregate species depending on the pH. The kinetic of aggregation has been studied at different pHs and the results have showed that the log of kinetic constants k P were linearly dependent on the pH. The morphology of these aggregates, investigated by SEM spectroscopy, showed that the solvent polarity influenced their structures. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Twenty-four individuals of Albunea carabus (Linnaeus, 1758), a species rarely reported in the Mediterranean Sea, have recently been collected in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy) in hydraulic dredge surveys carried out to assess local razor clam stocks. They were found in sandy bottoms at depths of 1–6 m in association with the commercial bivalves Ensis minor and Chamelea gallina and the decapods Diogenes pugilator, Portumnus latipes and Liocarcinus vernalis. The distribution of the species in the Italian seas is described based on a careful search of the available records. Notes on its reproductive biology and autoecology are also included. Elasmobranchs are among the most threatened long-lived marine species in the Mediterranean Sea. Incidental catch and intense fishing effort are considered the major threats to their conservation. To date, no Mediterranean countries has adopted specific technical measures within current conservation plans to mitigate potential impacts on vulnerable elasmobranchs. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of new elasmobranch bycatch reducing devices (BRD) in a Mediterranean multispecies bottom trawl fishery (northern central Adriatic Sea, one of the most exploited basins in the Mediterranean). Specifically, two types of grids were tested: a novel shark excluder device (SED) and a flexible grid (Flexgrid). Effectiveness was evaluated in terms of bycatch and commercial catch reduction, relying on the different sizes of elasmobranchs and the main commercial species. Results showed that preliminary tests with SED were effective in excluding elasmobranch species. Catches made with this grid showed no significant difference for targeted crustacean (mantis shrimp, Squilla mantis), however, commercial losses were shown for some large bony fish. Flexgrid did not affect the catches of the main target species, such as the red mullet (Mullus barbatus), European hake (Merluccius merluccius) and mantis shrimp, but also retained small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula). The effectiveness of the grids apparently was affected by the small size of the elasmobranchs captured. The study showed that SED and Flexgrid are valuable solutions for elasmobranchs if combined with other conservation measures (e.g. seasonal fishing closure in critical areas and good practices). Finally, strong cooperation between fishers, scientists, and managers is critical to identify the best management options in a regulatory framework where only a few elasmobranch species are formally protected. Mediterranean is one of the world's most heavily exploited seas, where more than 90 % of the assessed fish stocks are overfished. In this basin small scale fisheries (SSFs) play a major socioeconomic role in terms of fleet size, number of jobs and amount and value of landings. Passive nets (chiefly gillnets (GN s) and trammel nets (TN s)) are the most common fishing gears employed by SSFs. Since they are considered more selective and less harmful to stocks and habitats than other gears such as trawls, their selectivity and impacts are less explored. This study was performed to provide an accurate description of the selectivity of Mediterranean GN s and TN s in relation to legal provisions and the biological features of their most common target species. It was found that the minimum conservation reference size (MCRS) set for certain species is well under their length at first maturity (LFM) and does not contribute to sustainability. Moreover, a thorough overview of the technical features of Mediterranean passive nets highlighted that they catch mature individuals above the MCRS and are therefore size-selective. This characteristic goes a considerable way towards achieving several conservation priorities: to reduce fishing mortality, to minimize the capture of juveniles and discards, to spare sexually immature individuals, thus improving spawning stock biomass and increasing the yield per recruit while attenuating the impacts on benthic ecosystems. Shortening codend lastridge ropes can be an effective fishing gear modification to improve the size selection properties in diamond mesh codends. Lastridge ropes attached to codend selvedges withstand the longitudinal forces created by the catch building up and therefore, prevent the codend meshes from closing. However, the extent to which the lastridge ropes should be shortened to maximize the effect of this measure is unclear. Besides opening codend meshes, shortening lastridge ropes can also lead to net folding, which can potentially have negative consequences for size selectivity. In the present study, we tested the size selective properties of a 129 mm diamond mesh codend in three different configurations: 0 %, 15 % and 30 % shortened lastridge ropes. Selectivity data were collected for cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and redfish (Sebastes spp.) in the Barents Sea gadoid bottom trawl fishery. Shortening the lastridge ropes by 15 % had a significant effect on the release efficiency of haddock between 35 and 50 cm, whereas to obtain a similar result for cod, the lastridge ropes had to be shortened by 30 %. However, the use of shortened lastridge ropes significantly increased the retention of fish below 35 cm for both species, especially when the lastridge ropes were shortened from 15 % to 30 %. The effect on redfish size selectivity was in general limited. Exploitation pattern indicators showed that there was no added benefit from shortening them further from 15 % to 30 % for any of the three species. This study concludes that, while shortening lastridge ropes can contribute to improved size selection of diamond mesh codends, reducing them beyond 15 % is not recommended because it can substantially increase the retention of undersized fish, probably due to net folding. The authors report the occurrence of a megaoesophagus in a German Sheepdog puppy secondary to the persistence of the arterioso ligament. The three-month old patient had a record of regurgitation which became evident after weaning, dyspnoea and delayed growth. A simple x-ray of the thorax was made as a complementary diagnostic test. The patient was subjected to a left intercostals thoracotomy to dissect the arterioso ligament and free the oesophagic constriction. After surgery, a soft diet from an elevated level was indicated. At the end of the post-operatory period, the patient showed improved clinical signs despite the persistence of the megaoesophagus. Abstract: The coproporphyrin-I (CPI) behaves as a reducing agent for silver and gold metal ions and as stabilizing agent for the formed colloidal metallic nanoparticles. The peculiarity of silver and gold nanoparticles obtained in the reactions of monomeric form of CPI with their metal ions has been studied. The optical properties of the colloidal forms of these metals have been investigated by UV–Vis spectrophotometry, and their morphology by TEM and SEM measurements. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be used as a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) colorimetric sensor; the correlation between the SPR phenomenon and the aggregation state of nanoparticle allows the real-time detection of a target molecule. Surface functionalization of NPs with proper molecular baits is often performed to establish the selectivity of the sensor. This work reports on the synthesis of AgNPs under reducing conditions and on the functionalization thereof with mercaptoundecanoic acid (11-MUA). UV-VIS Spectroscopy confirmed the formation of AgNPs, eliciting a surface plasmon absorption band (SPAB) at 393 nm that shifted to 417 nm upon surface coating. Dynamic light scattering was used to investigate the surface coatings; moreover, pelleted AgNPs@11MUA nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analyzers (EDX), and infrared spectroscopy to corroborate the presence of 11MUA on the surface. Most interestingly, the resulting AgNPs@11MUA selectively detected micromolar levels of Ni2+, also in the presence of other cations such as Mn2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Fe2+, Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cr3+. A simple method to prepare silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with different shapes and dimensions was optimized by using a one-step reduction method with NaBH 4 , TSC and PVP, with H 2 O 2 acting as an oxidation agent, to etch the nanoparticles and produce different morphologies. A series of AgNPs were obtained with different colours, including yellow to green and passing through orange, red, violet and blue, that exhibited different localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) as analysed by UV–visible spectroscopy. The dimensions and morphologies of the nanostructures were characterized in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques. The characterizations showed different trends in the morphologies, starting from spherical to not well-defined structures, triangular nanoplates, hexagonal nanoplates and ultimately once again showing quasi-spherical shapes. The triangular nanoplates were tested as plasmon sensors for mercury ions in aqueous solution, and they showed an LSPR-blueshift with a change in colour from blue to violet. When a calibration curve was measured in the concentration range from 0.14 to 0.5 mg l−1, the nanoparticles showed good linearity between the Hg2+ concentration in the solutions and the LSPR blueshift, with a correlation factor R2 of 0.9978 and an LOD of 0.013 mg l−1 (64.9 nM).
