Remote sensing was used to map the invasion of yellow-flowered legumes on the Central Plateau of New Zealand to inform weed management strategy. The distributions of Cytisus scoparius (broom), Ulex europaeus (gorse) and Lupinus arboreus (tree lupin) were captured with high-resolution RGB photographs of the plants while flowering. The outcomes of herbicide operations to control C. scoparius and U. europaeus over time were also assessed through repeat photography and change mapping. A grid-square sampling tool previously developed by Manaaki Whenua—Landcare Research was used to help transfer data rapidly from photography to maps using manual classification. Artificial intelligence was trialled and ruled out because the number of false positives could not be tolerated. Future actions to protect the natural values and vistas of the Central Plateau from legume invasion were identified. While previous control operations have mostly targeted large, highly visible legume patches, the importance of removing outlying plants to prevent the establishment of new seed banks and slow spread has been underestimated. Outliers not only establish new, large, long-lived seed banks in previously seed-free areas, but they also contribute more to range expansion than larger patches. Our C. scoparius and U. europaeus change mapping confirms and helps to visualise the establishment and expansion of uncontrolled outliers. The power of visualizing weed control strategies through remote sensing has supported recommendations to improve outlier control to achieve long-term, sustainable landscape-scale suppression of invasive legumes. Globally, invasive non‐native plants are an increasing threat to indigenous biodiversity and ecosystems, but management can be compromised by poor efficacy of control methods, harmful non‐target effects or secondary invasions by other non‐native plant species.A 5‐year field trial compared two stakeholder‐selected control methods for heather, a European plant invading native ecosystems in and adjoining Tongariro National Park in New Zealand. The control methods were a selective herbicide (Pasture Kleen®; 2,4‐D ester) and biocontrol with an introduced beetle Lochmaea suturalis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).Biocontrol reduced mean heather cover by 97%, slightly more than herbicide at 87%, compared with a 20% increase in heather under no management.Cover of native dicots, the most species‐rich plant group, increased following biocontrol. In contrast, herbicide application had major non‐target effects on native dicots, reducing their percentage cover and species richness. Native monocot cover and species richness increased following both herbicide and biocontrol treatments.A similar eightfold increase in non‐native monocots occurred following both biocontrol and herbicide treatments. Overall, secondary invasion was greatest with biocontrol because non‐native dicot cover also increased, whereas herbicide almost eliminated non‐native dicots.Synthesis and applications. Biocontrol and herbicide treatments both controlled heather but herbicide application was associated with severe non‐target impacts on native dicots. Benefits to the native flora were consequently greatest in the biocontrol treatment, despite greater secondary invasion. Introduction The purpose of this study is to introduce a virtual radiology rotation curriculum that is being used to safely maintain medical student and intern education and engagement with the Department of Radiology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mitigation. Materials and Methods The curriculum is designed as a 4-week block with each week representing one of the four highest yield radiology subspecialties for medical students; neuroradiology, thoracic radiology, body radiology, and musculoskeletal radiology. A subspecialist radiologist from each section was identified as a primary mentor and tasked with designing a daily schedule for medical students and interns. The first 2 months of virtual rotators were surveyed to assess the effectiveness of the course. Results Thirty-five of 41 rotators responded to the survey, a response rate of 85%. Thirty-one of 35 (89%) of the rotators gave this virtual elective rotation a positive rating, with 16 trainees scoring the course as 4 out of 5 and 15 trainees selecting 5 out of 5. Four respondents selected 3 out of 5. Five out of 5 respondents who had experienced an in-person radiology elective rotation before this virtual rotation rated the virtual elective as more educational than the in-person rotation. We found the 4-week subspecialist mentor-based structure to be highly versatile, allowing us to simultaneously accommodate multiple groups of full or partial block rotators throughout COVID-19 mitigation. Conclusion A virtual rotation curriculum is a viable method of maintaining medical student and intern education and engagement with the department of radiology during COVID-19 mitigation. The New Zealand tea tree Leptospermun scoparium (mānuka) is widely known for the antimicrobial properties of its honey. Mānuka is native to New Zealand, growing in a range of environments, including the Central Volcanic Plateau of the North Island, where it is currently threatened by the spread of exotic invasive weeds such as heather (Calluna vulgaris) and Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius). Here, we characterise for the first time the aboveground volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by mānuka in this area, during summer and winter seasons, in weed-invaded and non-invaded stands. We measured plant volatiles at four sites, each with a distinct combination of woody species: (1) conspecific stands of mānuka; (2) mānuka and another native species (Dracophyllum subulatum); and mānuka with one of two European invasive plants, (3) heather or (4) Scotch broom. We also quantified herbivore damage on target mānuka plants and analysed microclimatic variables (soil nutrients, air temperature and soil water content) to investigate their impact on volatile emissions. Our results reveal a strong seasonal effect on volatile emissions, but also significant differences between sites associated with biotic and abiotic changes partly driven by invasive plants. Overall, volatile emission rates from mānuka were typically lower at sites where invaders were present. We point to several factors that could contribute to the observed emission patterns and areas of interest for future research to provide a comprehensive understanding of VOC emissions in nature. Given the vital role of volatile compounds in plant communication, we also recommend future studies to be performed in multiple seasons, with larger sample sizes and more study sites to expand on these findings and explore the ecological impacts of changes in VOC emissions during plant invasion. The objective of this study was to describe the natural history of primary pulmonary thrombus (PPT) in combat casualties. This was a retrospective study of casualties treated at a major military treatment facility from 2010 to 2012. Patients with a downrange chest CT were included. CTs were reviewed by two independent, blinded radiologists to confirm PPT on initial imaging. Follow-up CTs, if obtained, were also independently reviewed to determine the extent of clot burden. Two hundred and forty-nine casualties with a downrange, acceptable quality chest CT were included. 9 per cent (23/249) of patients sustained PPT. Thirty nine per cent (9/23) were initially treated with therapeutic anticoagulation (AC). Conversely, 61 per cent (14/23) arrived to our military treatment facility without AC. Seven arriving without AC-developed pulmonary symptoms during their hospitalization and had interval chest CTs. Of those, three had no evidence of pulmonary thrombus. The other four had subsegmental filling defects and three were started AC whereas one had an IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) filter inserted. In total, 11/23 (48%) PPT patients were managed without AC and discharged without complications. This is the first study attempting to look at PPT natural history. There were no adverse sequelae from managing PPT without AC. Further studies are warranted to further characterize PPT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the case of a 49-year-old male with metastatic epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation-positive adenocarcinoma of the lung that continues to outlive stage IV diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer after treatment with RRx-001, an experimental anticancer agent with epigenetic and immunologic activity, in the context of a phase II clinical trial called TRIPLE THREAT. Currently, no adequate treatment options exist for patients with EGFR mutation-positive tumors who have failed a 1st-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor (erlotinib or gefitinib) treatment and do not develop a resistant mutation. Biopsy of a large pancreatic metastasis after RRx-001 demonstrated extensive necrosis with CD3+ and CD8+ immune cell infiltration that appears to correlate with prolonged survival despite end-stage disease. These results suggest that the mode of action of RRx-001 is related to immune stimulation in addition to epigenetic inhibition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reproductive biology of 16 native shrub species was studied in 34 populations to identify breeding systems, pollen limitation, local abundance, and population age structures. Seven of the study species are hermaphroditic, seven dioecious, and two gynodioecious. One of the 18 hermaphrodite populations (Alseuosmia macrophylla at Mamaku Plateau) had high levels of self-incompatibility and pollen limitation and mutualism failure was evident. In the gender-dimorphic taxa, two populations (Coprosma spathulata from Hakarimata and Cyathodes juniperina from Pukemokemoke) had high levels of pollen limitation and insect-pollinated species consistently ranked higher in a vulnerability assessment compared with wind-pollinated species. There was no significant relationship between natural fruit set and the distance to the nearest conspecific pollen in any of the study populations. Seedling recruitment was variable but evident in 32 of the 34 study populations and appeared to be related to availability of suitable habitat. The species we studied occur mostly on forest edges where they rely on disturbed soil and high light conditions for establishment, and edges may be important for successful reproduction of some native plants, especially shrubs. We have demonstrated that plants with self-incompatibility mechanisms and pollinator specialisation are at greater risk from pollen limitation and mutualism failure than self-compatible or generalist species. Calluna vulgaris (heather) is an aggressive invasive weed on the Central Plateau, North Is., New Zealand (NZ), where it encounters different environmental factors compared to its native range in Europe, such as high ultraviolet radiation (UV) and a lack of specialist herbivores. The specialist herbivore Lochmaea suturalis (heather beetle) was introduced from the United Kingdom (UK) in 1996 as a biocontrol agent to manage this invasive weed. Like other plant invaders, a novel environment may be challenging for heather as it adjusts to its new conditions. This process of "adjustment" involves morphological and physiological changes often linked to phenotypic plasticity. The biochemical responses of exotic plants to environmental variables in their invaded range is poorly understood. The production and release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is essential to plant communication and highly susceptible to environmental change. This study therefore aimed to explore the VOC emissions of heather in response to different levels of UV exposure, and to feeding damage by L. suturalis. Using tunnel houses clad with UV-selective filters, we measured VOCs produced by heather under NZ ambient, 20% attenuated, and 95% attenuated solar UV treatments. We also compared VOC emissions in the field at adjacent sites where L. suturalis was present or absent. Volatiles produced by the same target heather plants were measured at four different times in the spring and summer of 2018–2019, reflecting variations in beetle's abundance, feeding stage and plant phenology. Heather plants under 95% attenuated UV produced significantly higher amounts of (E)-β-farnesene, decanal, benzaldehyde, and benzeneacetaldehyde compared to 25% attenuated and ambient UV radiation. We also found significant differences in volatiles produced by heather plants in beetle-present versus beetle-absent sites on most sampling occasions. We also recorded a lower number of generalist herbivores on heather at sites where L. suturalis was present. We investigated the influence of biological control agent rearing success on weed biocontrol programs in New Zealand. Difficulties have been experienced in rearing approximately one third of all arthropod species imported into New Zealand containment as candidate weed biocontrol agents, and 16% of species could not be reared at all. Rearing success did not prevent agents from being approved for release because host-range testing of difficult to rear species was often completed in the native range using field-collected material. In the past, agents that could not be easily reared were directly released using field-collected material, often in large numbers. Since 1984, this approach has become harder due to the regulatory requirement for agents to be screened for the presence of pathogenic organisms, and so direct releases have been limited to very small numbers (<400 individuals). Agent establishment success was correlated to the numbers released. We conclude that the success rate of weed biocontrol could be improved by improving rearing success, or taking steps to enhance the success rate of small direct field releases. Background and Aims: Interactions between species are especially sensitive to environmental changes. The interaction between plants and pollinators is of particular interest given the potential current global decline in pollinators. Reduced pollinator services can be compensated for in some plant species by self-pollination. However, if inbreeding depression is high, selfed progeny could die prior to reaching adulthood, leading to cryptic recruitment failure. Methods: To examine this scenario, pollinator abundance, pollen limitation, selfing rates and inbreeding depression were examined in 12 populations of varying disturbance levels in Sophora microphylla (Fabaceae), an endemic New Zealand tree species. Key Results: High pollen limitation was found in all populations (average of 58% reduction in seed production, nine populations), together with high selfing rates (61% of offspring selfed, six populations) and high inbreeding depression (selfed offspring 86% less fit, six populations). Pollen limitation was associated with lower visitation rates by the two endemic bird pollinators. Conclusions: The results suggest that for these populations, over half of the seeds produced are genetically doomed. This reduction in the fitness of progeny due to reduced pollinator service is probably important to population dynamics of other New Zealand species. More broadly, the results suggest that measures of seed production or seedling densities may be a gross overestimate of the effective offspring production. This could lead to cryptic recruitment failure, i.e. a decline in successful reproduction despite high progeny production. We tested the hypothesis that quantifying the relative performance of candidate weed biocontrol agents on test and target plants during laboratory host-range testing can predict the probability of test plants being attacked in the field. For arthropod weed biocontrol agents established in New Zealand between 1929 and 2010, the probability of host use was positively correlated with relative performance for both no-choice starvation tests and no-choice oviposition tests. Moreover, multiplying together the relative performance scores for no-choice starvation and oviposition tests to create a combined risk score for no-choice tests resulted in a clear-cut threshold indicating that for scores between 0.21 and 0.33 the probability of host use (including minor spillover attack) occurring rose from close to zero to a virtual certainty. Choice oviposition test data showed a similar pattern to no-choice data, except there were two cases where host use occurred in the field on plant species that had very low relative performance scores in the choice tests. Both of these cases were associated with asynchrony between seed-feeding biocontrol agent activity and the reproductive phenology of the target plant, indicating that choice tests may be inappropriate for certain guilds of biocontrol agent that attack ephemeral plant structures. We conclude that quantitative laboratory testing data can help predict risk of non-target attack. The ability to refer to threshold relative performance scores when deciding whether an agent is safe to release has the potential to ensure fewer environmentally safe candidate biocontrol agents are erroneously rejected, thereby enhancing efficiency in the selection and approval of new agents. Abstract: The boneseed leafroller moth Tortrix s.l. sp. ‘chyrsanthemoides’ (BSLR), originating from Western Cape Province, South African was introduced into New Zealand for the biological control (biocontrol) of a South African shrub boneseed Chrysanthemoides monilifera ssp. monilifera but has established only patchily. We investigated factors hypothesized to influence its establishment success. Field surveys and manipulative experiments ruled out climate as a factor and indicated that establishment failure was associated with predation, mainly by invasive ants of South American (Linepithema humile), and Australian (Doleromyrma darwiniana; Nylanderia sp.) origin that were attracted to invasive honeydew-secreting scale insects (Parasaissetia nigra and Saissetia oleae) found on boneseed. An exclusion experiment showed that unless invertebrate predators (mainly invasive ants and Vespula and Polistes wasps) were excluded, BSLR larvae did not survive to maturity on boneseed plants infested with scale insects. This study supports the notion that insect agents that feed externally on the host-plant are susceptible to predation in the presence of ant-tended Homoptera and that if ant-tended Homoptera are present, candidate agents should be prioritized accordingly. 1. Natural enemies may reduce the effectiveness of weed biocontrol agents and can also cause environmental damage, for example to a shared native insect host through apparent competition. Indeed, successful biocontrol may rely on enemy-free space and avoidance of apparent competition in the area where the biocontrol agent is introduced. 2. We surveyed parasitism in 28 insects released for weed biocontrol in New Zealand (NZ). We reviewed the global literature and databases to complement this survey, and to collate records of these insects being parasitized in their area of origin. We also collated records of native insects that feed on weeds targeted for biocontrol in NZ to test Lawton’s (1985) hypothesis that, to find enemy-free space, selected agents should ‘feed in a way that is different’ and ‘be taxonomically distinct’ from native herbivores in the introduced range. 3. We found that 19, mostly native, parasitoid species attack 10 weed biocontrol agents in NZ, of which 15 were confined to five agents that possessed ‘ecological analogues’, defined as a native NZ insect that belongs to the same superfamily as the agent and occupies a similar niche on the target weed. Parasitoid species richness in NZ was positively correlated to richness in the area of origin. However, only agents with ecological analogues contributed significantly to this pattern. 4. A review of NZ weed biocontrol programmes indicated that parasitism is significantly associated with the failure of agents to suppress weed populations. 5. Synthesis and applications. Although our conclusions are based on an unavoidably limited data set, we conclude that biocontrol agents that escape attack from parasitoids are more likely to suppress weed populations and should be less likely to have significant indirect non-target effects in food webs. 1. A seed-feeding biocontrol agent Bruchidius villosus was released in New Zealand (NZ) to control the invasive European shrub, broom Cytisus scoparius, in 1988 but it was subsequently considered unable to destroy sufficient seed to suppress broom populations. We hypothesized that an invasive mite Varroa destructor, which has caused honeybee decline in NZ, may cause pollinator limitation, so that the additional impact of B. villosus might now reach thresholds for population suppression. 2. We performed manipulative pollination treatments and broad-scale surveys of pollination, seed rain and seed destruction by B. villosus to investigate how pollinator limitation and biocontrol interact throughout the NZ range of broom. 3. The effect of reduced pollination in combination with seed-destruction was explored using a population model parameterized for NZ populations. 4. Broom seed rain ranged from 59 to 21 416 seeds m−2 from 2004 to 2008, and was closely correlated with visitation frequency of honeybees and bumblebees. Infestation of broom seeds by B. villosus is expected to eventually reach 73% (the average rate observed at the localities adjacent to early release sites). 5. The model demonstrated that 73% seed destruction, combined with an absence of honeybee pollination, could cause broom extinction at many sites and, where broom persists, reduce the intensity of treatment required to control broom by conventional means. 6. Nevertheless, seed rain was predicted to be sufficient to maintain broom invasions over many sites in NZ, even in the presence of the varroa mite and B. villosus, largely due to the continued presence of commercial beehives that are treated for varroa mite infestation. 7. Synthesis and applications. Reduced pollination through absence of honeybees can reduce broom seed set to levels at which biocontrol can be more effective. To capitalize on the impact of the varroa mite on feral honeybees, improved management of commercial beehives (for example, withdrawal of licences for beekeepers to locate hives on Department of Conservation land) could be used as part of a successful integrated broom management programme at many sites in NZ. We assessed the degree of pollen and fruit-dispersal limitation in the endemic gynodioecious New Zealand tree fuchsia Fuchsia excorticata over several seasons and at 17 sites throughout New Zealand. The flowers were visited mainly by two endemic honeyeaters (bellbirds and tui), and in some cases very frequently by silvereyes, which also occasionally rob nectar from flowers. We confirmed that hermaphrodites account for more than half the plants in all populations, are fully self-compatible, and can autonomously self in the absence of pollinators (especially in plants with smaller herkogamy). Fruit production in hermaphrodites and (particularly) females was frequently pollen-limited (mean Pollen Limitation Indices of 0.17 and 0.40, respectively), and was correlated with visual assessments of pollen loads on the stigma, a useful index of pollinator service. A comparison of the proportion of ripe or overripe fruit on branches exposed to birds versus branches enclosed in wire cages showed that uncaged fruit on Kapiti Island is removed almost as soon as it is ripe but on the mainland it persists for much longer. The proportion of ripe or overripe compared to green fruit is therefore an approximate index of dispersal service. A 64-year-old male former smoker with a history of prostate cancer presented to our pulmonary clinic, complaining of nonproductive cough for 10 years. Prior evaluation included treatment for upper airway cough syndrome and gastroesophageal reflux, stopping angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, and initiation of inhaled β-agonists. Esophageal pH monitoring indicated silent reflux, and proton pump inhibitor therapy was started. He continued to cough and complain of dyspnea. Physical examination produced unremarkable results, with no evidence of lymphadenopathy. Pulmonary function tests showed a pseudo-restrictive pattern with air trapping, hyperreactivity, and incomplete bronchodilator responsiveness: FEV1, 2.48 L (69% of predicted); FVC, 3.57 L (75% of predicted); FEV1/FVC, 92%; total lung capacity, 7.00 L (100% of predicted); and residual volume, 3.05 L (136% of predicted).
