Background & Aims: Bacterial resistance toward the most used antibiotics is increasing in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) strains worldwide. The emergence of multidrug resistance significantly affects the efficacy of standard therapy regimens. Therefore, this prospective study has updated the prevalence rates of primary antibiotic resistance in H. pylori strains isolated in routine practice. Methods: H. pylori isolates obtained from patients consecutively observed in a single center were tested for primary resistance by using the E-test method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) breakpoints to define resistance to clarithromycin, metronidazole, and levofloxacin were, respectively, greater than 0. 25 mg/L, 8 mg/L, and 1 mg/L, according to updated EUCAST recommendations. The trend of antibiotic prevalence, either single or combined, during 2020-2023 was assessed. Results: A total of 789 patients meeting inclusion criteria were diagnosed with H. pylori infection, but bacterial strains were overall recovered in 632 (80.1%) cases. At bacterial culture, primary resistance rate was 36.7% for clarithromycin, 32.8% for metronidazole, and 22.1% for levofloxacin, whilst dual clarithromycin-metronidazole resistance rate was detected in 17.4%, and triple resistance in 9%. Conclusions: Our data found that primary resistance towards both clarithromycin and metronidazole, as well as dual resistance, is substantially stable in Italy whilst the prevalence of levofloxacin resistance seems to be decreasing in our geographic area. Background and Aim: Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common bacterial infections affecting humans, causing gastroduodenal and extraintestinal diseases. Treatment of the infection remains challenging for the clinicians, and different factors are involved in the failure of the therapeutic approach. The importance of the intensity of acid secretion inhibition remains an unclear issue. The aim of this study is to assess whether 80 mg/day esomeprazole‐based 10‐day sequential therapy (esomeprazole‐ST) achieved different eradication rates when compared to 80 mg/day pantoprazole‐based analogous regimen (pantoprazole‐ST). Methods: This was a retrospective observational study where data of consecutive patients referred by their physicians to our unit to perform an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were analyzed. Results: Overall, 1,327 patients were available for the analysis: 599 and 728 patients received pantoprazole‐ST and esomeprazole‐ST, respectively. Eradication rate was significantly higher in patients receiving esomeprazole‐ST (92.6%, 95% CI: 91–94.5) than pantoprazole‐ST (89.3%, 95% CI: 86.7–91.7; difference: 3.3%; 95% CI: 0.2–6.5; P = 0.037). Even after a multivariate analysis, the esomeprazole‐ST achieved a significantly higher eradiation (OR: 1.44; 95% CI: 1.1–2.17). Conclusions: This study showed that esomeprazole‐ST achieved significantly higher H. pylori cure rates than pantoprazole‐ST. • XRF is used to characterize non-destructively 29 Sasanian drachmas (499–628 AD). • The elemental composition is determined, checking authenticity and purity. • Semi-quantitative analysis identified two potential forgeries among the 29 coins. • Five Khosrow II coins with a special inscription had Ag content over 99 %. • Au content could identify cerussite as the original ore for silver mining. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis is widely employed in the field of cultural heritage due to its non-destructive nature. µ-EDXRF was used to study 29 Sasanian drachmas from a private collection at the Department of Humanities, University of Trieste. The coins were issued between 499 and 628 AD, during the reigns of four Sasanian kings (Kawad I, Khosrow I, Hormizd IV, and Khosrow II). This study aimed to determine the elemental composition of the alloy's surface, assess the coins' fineness, and identify potential forgeries or signs of devaluation. Eight XRF spectra were acquired for each sample, revealing a primary composition of Ag, with traces of Cu, Au, and Pb. Semi-quantitative analysis showed Ag content exceeding 95% in nearly all coins, with two suspected forgeries identified (coin no. 13 minted during the reign of Hormizd IV and coin no. 18 from the reign of Khosrow II). Five drachmas from Khosrow II's reign, marked with the inscription "afid", exhibited Ag content above 99 %, supporting the historical hypothesis of superior quality compared to other drachmas from the same period. Finally, the %Au and the presence of Pb provided further indications on the origin of Ag, allowing hypotheses on the mineral sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seismic refraction tomography is a commonly used technique to characterise rock glaciers, as the boundary between unfrozen and ice-bearing layers represents a strong impedance contrast. In several rock glaciers, we observed a reversed polarity of the waves refracted by an extended ice-bearing layer compared to direct-wave arrivals. This phase change may be related to the presence of a thin low-velocity layer (LVL), such as fine- to coarse-grained sediments, above a thicker ice-rich layer. Our results are confirmed by the modelling and analysis of synthetic seismograms to demonstrate that the presence of a low-velocity layer can produce a polarity reversal on the seismic gather. Zinc oxide and polylactic-co-glycolic acid (ZnO-PLGA) nanocomposites are known to exhibit different biomedical applications and antibacterial activity, which could be beneficial for adding to wound dressings after different surgeries. However, possible cytotoxic effects along with various unexpected activities could reduce the use of these prominent systems. This is correlated to the property of ZnO, which exhibits different polymeric forms, in particular, wurtzite, zinc-blende, and rocksalt. In this study, we propose a computational approach based on the density functional theory to investigate the properties of ZnO-PLGA systems in detail. First, three different stable polymorphs of ZnO were considered. Subsequently, the abilities of each system to absorb the PLGA copolymer were thoroughly investigated, taking into account the modulation of electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. Significant differences between ZnO and PLGA systems have been found; in this study, we remark on the potential use of these models and the necessity to describe crucial surface aspects that might be challenging to observe with experimental approaches but which can modulate the performance of nanocomposites. Updated data on genital Mollicutes prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility can help provide guidance for antibiotic stewardship and set up effective strategies for infection control policies. In this multicentre study, we assessed the prevalence and the resistance profile of Mycoplasma hominis (MH) and Ureaplasma species (U. parvum/U. urealyticum), analyzing data from 21,210 subjects who provided urogenital samples for Mollicutes detection by culture over a 5-year period (2017–2021) in two high-density urban areas in the North of Italy (i.e., Bologna and Lecco). Overall prevalence of Mollicutes infection was 22.3%, with women showing a significantly higher detection rate than men (p < 0.00001). The prevalence decreased with age (highest prevalence <30 years) and over the years considered. Ureaplasma strains were much more frequently detected (62.3%) compared to MH (8.3%) and to mixed infections (29.4%). Ureaplasma species showed high levels of ciprofloxacin resistance (39.5%), whereas MH strains were nonsusceptible to azithromycin and roxithromycin in about 60% of cases. Over time, a significant decrease of resistance to azithromycin and doxycycline was detected (p < 0.0001 and 0.0004, respectively), in parallel with an important increase of ciprofloxacin-resistance levels (p < 0.0001). Detecting the impacts of natural and anthropogenic disturbances that cause declines in organisms or changes in community composition has long been a focus of ecology. However, a tradeoff often exists between the spatial extent over which relevant data can be collected, and the resolution of those data. Recent advances in underwater photogrammetry, as well as computer vision and machine learning tools that employ artificial intelligence (AI), offer potential solutions with which to resolve this tradeoff. Here, we coupled a rigorous photogrammetric survey method with novel AI-assisted image segmentation software in order to quantify the impact of a coral bleaching event on a tropical reef, both at an ecologically meaningful spatial scale and with high spatial resolution. In addition to outlining our workflow, we highlight three key results: (1) dramatic changes in the three-dimensional surface areas of live and dead coral, as well as the ratio of live to dead colonies before and after bleaching; (2) a size-dependent pattern of mortality in bleached corals, where the largest corals were disproportionately affected, and (3) a significantly greater decline in the surface area of live coral, as revealed by our approximation of the 3D shape compared to the more standard planar area (2D) approach. The technique of photogrammetry allows us to turn 2D images into approximate 3D models in a flexible and efficient way. Increasing the resolution, accuracy, spatial extent, and efficiency with which we can quantify effects of disturbances will improve our ability to understand the ecological consequences that cascade from small to large scales, as well as allow more informed decisions to be made regarding the mitigation of undesired impacts. Considerable amounts of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg0) can be released into the atmosphere from Hg-enriched substrates, such as those from former mining areas, posing a potential environmental threat. In this work, Hg0 fluxes at the soil–air interface under natural vegetation covers were measured in various locations within the Idrija Hg mining area (Slovenia) and its surroundings. Sites were selected in order to compare Hg0 fluxes from both forest soils heavily impacted by historical ore roasting and urban soils characterised by a different degree of Hg enrichment due to the natural occurrence of Hg in rocks or recent mining and roasting processes. Replicate measurements at each site were conducted using a non-steady state flux chamber coupled with a real-time Hg0 analyser (Lumex RA-915M). Moreover, topsoil samples (0–2 cm) were analysed for Hg total concentration and speciation. Cinnabar was the predominant Hg form in almost all the sites. Despite Hg0 being undetectable in soils using thermo-desorption, substantial emissions were observed (70.7–701.8 ng m−2 h−1). Urban soils in a naturally enriched area showed on average the highest Hg0 fluxes, whereas relatively low emissions were found at the historical roasting site, which is currently forested, despite the significantly high total Hg content in soils (up to 219.0 and 10,400 mg kg−1, respectively). Overall, our findings confirm that shading by trees or litter may effectively limit the amount of Hg0 released into the atmosphere even from extremely enriched soils, thus acting as a natural mitigation. Ice is a rich reservoir of past climate information, and the well-documented increasing rate of glacier retreat represents a great loss for paleoclimate studies. In this framework, the Ice Memory project aims to extract and analyze ice cores from glacier regions worldwide and store them in Antarctica as a heritage record for future generations of scientists. Ice coring projects usually require a focused geophysical investigation, often based on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) prospecting to assess the most suitable drilling positions. As a novel approach in the Calderone Glacieret, we integrated the GPR method with Frequency Domain Electromagnetic (FDEM) surveys, a technique not commonly applied in the glacial environment. We used a separated-coils FDEM instrument to characterize the glacieret structure. The acquired FDEM datasets were inverted and compared to the GPR data and borehole information. The results demonstrated the capability of the FDEM technique to define the structure of the glacieret correctly; therefore, the potential to be applied in frozen subsoil environments. This opens new perspectives for the use of the FDEM technique to characterize periglacial environments, such as rock glaciers, where the coarse-blocky surface hinders data acquisition and enhances the problem of signal scattering. MoO3 and MoO2 systems have attracted particular attention for many widespread applications thanks to their electronic and optical peculiarities; from the crystallographic point of view, MoO3 adopts a thermodynamically stable orthorhombic phase (α-MoO3) belonging to the space group Pbmn, while MoO2 assumes a monoclinic arrangement characterized by space group P21/c. In the present paper, we investigated the electronic and optical properties of both MoO3 and MoO2 by using Density Functional Theory calculations, in particular, the Meta Generalized Gradient Approximation (MGGA) SCAN functional together with the PseudoDojo pseudopotential, which were used for the first time to obtain a deeper insight into the nature of different Mo–O bonds in these materials. The calculated density of states, the band gap, and the band structure were confirmed and validated by comparison with already available experimental results, while the optical properties were validated by recording optical spectra. Furthermore, the calculated band-gap energy value for the orthorhombic MoO3 showed the best match to the experimental value reported in the literature. All these findings suggest that the newly proposed theoretical techniques reproduce the experimental evidence of both MoO2 and MoO3 systems with high accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Frozen layers within the subsurface of rock glaciers are generally assumed to act as aquicludes or acquitards. So far, this behavior has been mainly defined by analyzing the geochemical characteristics of spring waters. In this work, for the first time, we experimentally confirmed this assumption by executing an infiltration test in a rock glacier of the Southern Alps, Italy. Time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) technique monitored the infiltration of 800 L of saltwater released on the surface of the rock glacier; 24 h ERT monitoring highlighted that the injected water was not able to infiltrate into the underlying frozen layer. HfO2 can assume different crystalline structures, such as monoclinic, orthorhombic, and cubic polymorphs, each one characterized by unical properties. The peculiarities of this material are also strongly related to the presence of doping elements in the unit cell. Thus, the present paper has the main purpose of studying and comparing twelve different systems characterized by diverse polymorphs and doping percentages. In particular, three different crystalline structures were considered: the monoclinic P21/c, the orthorhombic Pca21, and the cubic Fm 3 ¯ m phases of HfO2. Each one has been studied by using Y as a doping agent with three different contents: 0% Y:HfO2, 8% Y:HfO2, 12% Y:HfO2, and 16% Y:HfO2. For all the systems, density functional theory (DFT) methods based on PBE/GGA, and on the HSE hybrid functionals were used to optimize the geometry as well as to study their optical properties. Depending on the polymorphs, Y affects the formation energy in different ways and causes changes in the optical properties. When the percentage of Y did not exceed 12%, a stabilization of the cubic phase fraction and an increase of the dielectric constant was observed. Additionally, the calculated optical bandgap energies and the refractive index are examined to provide an overview of the systems and are compared with experimental data. The bandgaps obtained are in perfect agreement with the experimental values and show a slight increase as the doping percentage grows, while only minor differences are found between the three polymorphs in terms of both refractive index and optical band gap. The adopted first principles study generates a reasonable prediction of the physical-chemical properties of all the systems, thus identifying the effects of doping phenomena. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A dietary supplement potentially employed for the treatment and/or prevention of hyperlipidemia was developed. The proposed product is composed of a combination of natural macromolecules as chitosan (CH), α-cyclodextrin (α-CD), and lupin proteins (LP). First, the anti-hyperlipidemic effect of the α-CD and LP binary mixture was assessed and compared to that of the extensively utilized anti-hyperlipidemic CH, using a hyperlipidemic rat model. The anti-hyperlipidemic effect of their combination was also demonstrated. Additionally, ligand–target and protein–protein docking studies were performed. The in vivo results displayed that on intergroup comparison, blending CH, α-CD, and LP promised a superior therapeutic effect over α-CD and LP mixture, CH, and the marketed atorvastatin, potentiating a considerable reduction of serum lipid profile and the calculated atherogenic risk predictor indices. Molecular docking study revealed a weak hydrophobic cholesterol–CH and cholesterol–α-CD interactions, while protein–protein docking study showed a good lipase–LP interaction, involving eight hydrogen bonds. Then, on the base of the in vivo and docking study results, a tablet formulation was produced aimed to overcome the negative technological effects of the anti-hyperlipidemic macromolecules: long disintegration time and tablets mechanical resistance. The optimized tablet formulation has a disintegration time shorter than 15 min and a weight loss from friability test lower than 1%, which are in line with the regulatory specifications for uncoated tablets. Overall, this anti-hyperlipidemic formulation is attractive for the dietary and nutraceutical market, despite further clinical studies are required to assess the efficacy, possible side effects, and product compliance. HfO2 shows different polymorphs, including monoclinic and orthorhombic ones, that exhibit singular properties. Moreover, the character of HfO2 is also influenced by the Zr atoms as a doping agent. Here, an extensive study of the monoclinic P21/c and the orthorhombic Pca21 polymorphs of HfO2, Hf0.75Zr0.25O2, and Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 is reported. For all six systems, density functional theory (DFT) methods based on generalized gradient approximations (GGAs) were first used; then the GGA + U method was settled and calibrated to describe the electrical and optical properties of polymorphs and the responses to the oxygen vacancies. Zr had different effects in relation to the polymorph; moreover, the amount of Zr led to important differences in the optical properties of the Pca21 polymorph. Finally, oxygen vacancies were investigated, showing an important modulation of the properties of HfxZryO2 nanostructures. The combined GGA and GGA + U methods adopted in this work generate a reasonable prediction of the physicochemical properties of o- and m-HfxZryO2, identifying the effects of doping phenomena. Air pollutants are usually formed by easily spreading small molecules, representing a severe problem for human health, especially in urban centers. Despite the efforts to stem their diffusion, many diseases are still associated with exposure to these molecules. The present study focuses on modeling and designing two-dimensional systems called Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs), which can potentially trap these molecules. For this purpose, a Density Functional Theory (DFT) approach has been used to study the role of the elemental composition of LDHs, the type of counterion, and the ability of these systems to intercalate NO2 and SO2 between the LDH layers. The results demonstrated how the counterion determines the different possible spacing between the layers, modulating the internalization capacity of pollutants and determining the stability degree of the system for a long-lasting effect. The variations in structural properties, the density of states (DOS), and the description of the charge transfer have been reported, thus allowing the investigation of aspects that are difficult to observe from an experimental point of view and, at the same time, providing essential details for the effective development of systems that can counteract the spread of air pollutants. Carlina acaulis root essential oil (EO) is one of the most potent mosquito larvicides (LC50 < 2 ppm). This EO is mainly composed of carlina oxide (> 90%). Poor water solubility and rapid degradation from UV light and oxygen in the environment limit the real-world use of this EO. Herein, we developed nanocarrier-based formulations, namely micro- and nanoemulsions (ME and NE, respectively) containing C. acaulis EO or carlina oxide (both at 0.5%) as active ingredients (a.i.). The larvicidal activity of ME and NE was evaluated against Culex quinquefasciatus. The highest larvicidal activity was achieved by the ME containing 0.5% of the EO (M1); its LC50(90) was 579.1 (791.3) µL L−1. Sublethal effects of this ME and its a.i. were assessed testing both at the LC16, LC30, LC50 and LC90 on mosquito larvae exposed to each product for 1–7 h, and then monitoring mortality for 18 days. At variance with the EO, ME application, even at LC16, led to 100% mortality at 18 days. The EO and its encapsulated form were scarcely toxic to human keratinocytes (HaCaT) and human fibroblast (NHF A12) cell lines. The acute toxicity of C. acaulis EO and its ME (M1) was also evaluated in Wistar rats through oral administration; EO LD50 was 1098 mg kg−1 bw, whereas its ME, even at 5000 mg kg−1 bw (considered the upper testing limit to establish safety to mammals), was not toxic. Biodegradable chitosan films were produced using lactic and acetic acid solutions and glutaraldehyde as crosslinking agent by casting technique. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different acids and the crosslinking on the characteristics and biodegradability of chitosan films. The films were analyzed through thickness, swelling degree, mechanical and thermal properties, chemical structure and biodegradability. The glutaraldehyde release was also evaluated. All films' properties are deeply affected by the acid type and glutaraldehyde crosslinking. Crosslinking reduced the swelling degree of films, also increasing their fragility. The glutaraldehyde release from the films to the simulant solutions was not observed after the incubation period. Through biodegradation tests, it was observed that the crosslinking does not prevent films' degradability but longer time is required. The qualitative analysis of ecotoxicity of the films suggests the possibility of composting the developed films. The films presented potential for application as membranes and in packaging, and different formulations can be used according to the desired final characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: the temporal muscle is covered by the dense temporal fascia, the fascia not only protects and contains the muscle, but also provides insertion for its anterior and middle fibers, since the flesh fibers originate from the infratemporal cavity and the middle portion of the fascia. Case report: The purpose of this study is to expose an atypical variation of the temporal tendon in the region of the retromolar trigone, which presents a deep insertion, found during routine exodontia of the mandibular third molar, in addition to exemplifying the possible clinical-surgical implications. The surgical implications of this variation surpass from a simple difficulty in the detachment maneuver to the presence of exaggerated edema or even the presence of postoperative trismus. This paper analyses vertical vision by tracing its possible genealogy and exploring the forms it takes in the contemporary city. In the first section, vertical vision is situated in the context of its cosmographic tenets. In the second section, the critique of verticality is complemented by a topological approach where vertical vision can be seen folding into a novel visual grammar. The lineaments of this grammar can be retrieved by attending specifically to algorithms and their role in contemporary urban perception, which we discuss in the third section. The fourth section implements the suggestions of two artists: Harun Farocki's notion of navigation, and Hito Steyerl's notion of bubble vision. Exposing the central role played by digital platforms in ushering in this novel paradigm, bubble vision can be reconstructed as the logical end-point of classical vertical vision. This comes in conjunction with the rise of a peculiar visual-cultural configuration, which could be called 'atmoculture.' Section five submits that atmoculture represents the cultural milieu of bubble vision. In conclusion, the paper invites visual scholars interested in the study of verticality to recognise bubble vision, together with its atmocultural background, as a new expression, and a reconfiguration, of vertical vision: similarly, centred and disembodied, exhilarating, and dangerously de-responsibilising. Critically ill COVID-19 patients have a clear pattern of inflammation and hypercoagulable state. The main aim of the study was to evaluate the outcome of severe COVID-19 patients basing on prothrombotic risk factors (i.e. D-dimer). We also evaluated the impact of different doses of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) on the incidence of bleedings. The data of forty-two patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) were retrospectively analyzed. On ICU admission, patients with D-dimer < 3000 ng/mL (Group 1) received enoxaparin 4000 UI (6000 UI, if body mass index >35) subcutaneously b.i.d. and patients with D-dimer ≥ 3000 ng/mL (Group 2) received enoxaparin 100 UI/kg every 12 h. Aspirin was administered to all patients once a day. Both groups presented a high incidence of perivascular thrombosis (40.9% in Group 1 and 30% in Group 2). Patients of Group 2 suffered a higher incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) than Group 1 (65% vs 13.6%, p = 0.001). One patient (4.5%) of Group 1 and three patients (15%) of Group 2 suffered from minor bleeding; no patient had major bleeding. Group 2 had a longer ICU and hospital stay than Group 1 (11.5 ± 5.6 vs 9.0 ± 4.8 and 30 ± 4.9 vs 21 ± 2.3, p < 0.05, respectively) as well as increased ICU mortality (25% vs 9.1%). More severe critically ill COVID-19 patients have a high incidence of VTE and worse outcome, despite the use of heparin at the therapeutic dose. However, the use of heparin did not increase the incidence of bleeding complications. • Risk stratification based on D-dimer values is fundamental in critically ill patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. • High-risk patients have a higher incidence of thromboembolic events and worse outcome compared with low risk ones. • The use of heparin in therapeutic doses did not lead to an increase of bleeding risk. Background: The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR) can reflect both the myeloid dysfunction and T‐cell immune suppression and have prognostic significance. Methods: In 771 newly diagnosed advanced‐stage Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) patients we evaluated the baseline values of NLR and LMR as predictors of clinical outcome. According to the multicenter prospective phase II GITIL‐HD0607 trial, all patients received two ABVD courses and if PET‐2 negative received four additional ABVD cycles while if PET‐2‐positive patients were randomized to either BEACOPP escalated (Be) plus BEACOPP baseline (Bb) (4 + 4 courses) or Be + Bb (4 + 4) and Rituximab. PET scans were centrally reviewed by an expert panel by Blinded Independent Central Review. Results: Higher NLR and lower LMR were associated with a PET‐2 positivity and failure to achieve long‐term disease control, respectively. By univariate and multivariate analysis, large nodal mass (>7 cm), IPS ≥ 3, NLR > 6 were strong independent predictors of early PET‐2 response after ABVD. Only NLR > 6 and IPS ≥ 3 were strong independent predictors of outcome at diagnosis; however, when PET‐2 status was added, only PET‐2‐positive status and IPS ≥ 3 were independent predictors of PFS. Focusing on PET‐2‐negative patients, those with NLR > 6 had an inferior 3‐year PFS compared to patients with NLR ≤ 6 (84% vs 89% months, P =.03). Conclusion: In advanced‐stage HL patients treated with a PET‐2‐driven strategy, IPS ≥ 3 and NLR > 6 are independent predictors of outcome at diagnosis while the presence of large nodal mass, IPS ≥ 3, and NLR > 6 at diagnosis are independent predictors of early ABVD response. • A decreasing trend in the efficacy of rifabutin-based therapy was detected, particularly when clarithromycin resistance was present. • Our data confirm Pylera® regimen as a reliable option to successfully treat eradication failure patients. Indeed, the eradication rates are steadily high (90%) until the fourth-line attempt. • These findings would suggest that the role of rifabutin-based regimen as rescue therapy should be at least reconsidered, and its use reserved to selected patients. • Unfortunately, Pylera® regimen is really complex and causes side-effects more frequently than other therapies. H. pylori treatment remains a challenge for clinicians, and a definite quote of patients require two or more treatments. We evaluated the efficacy of rifabutin-based therapy and Pylera® regimen as rescue therapies. Between January 2016 and December 2019, dyspeptic patients with at least one therapeutic failure observed in clinical practice received either a 12-day rifabutin-based triple therapy (esomeprazole 40 mg and amoxicillin 1 g, both twice daily, and rifabutin 150 mg once daily) or 10-day quadruple therapy with Pylera® (three in one capsule containing 140 mg bismuth subcitrate potassium, 125 mg metronidazole and 125 mg tetracycline). The eradication rates according to previous number of eradication failure therapies were calculated. The role antibiotic resistance pattern in H. pylori isolates was also investigated. Data of 423 patients were available. A total of 270 patients were treated with rifabutin-based therapy, and the overall eradication rate was 61.9%. Pylera® therapy was administered to 153 patients and the cure rate was 88.3%. According to the number of previous therapeutic failures, the eradication rate for the rifabutin-based therapy was 68.3% as second-line and further decreased to 63.1% in fourth-line therapy. Following Pylera® regimen, the cure rate was 94.8% in second-line, and remained 89.6% in fourth-line therapy. Efficacy of rifabutin-based and Pylera® therapies significantly decreased when clarithromycin and levofloxacin resistance, respectively, were present. Introduction. This report aims at demonstrating the treatment of complex mandibular fracture functional reimplantation of the maxillary alveolar fragment (FRAF), denoting the possibility and feasibility of this reduction with an excellent prognosis. Case Report. Patient E.M.S, 25 years old, male, leucoderma, referred to the Emergency Room of our institute. He reported being a victim of physical aggression, occlusal alteration, limitation of mouth opening, sensibility loss in the mentalis region, right infraorbital, and denied visual alteration. On physical examination, during the inspection and palpation, the crackling was observed in the right mandibular region and apical displacement of the maxillary alveolar process, corresponding to elements 13, 14, and 15. Conclusion. The rigid fixation of the complex jaw fracture and alveolar maxilla process, through functional reduction, indicated satisfactory applicability, and favorable prognosis. Biopolymers have gained prominence in different areas, such as food packaging for single-use and biomedical applications, automotive field and electrostatic separation systems. The present work aims the development of films by casting based on chitosan and cornstarch incorporated with turmeric. Turmeric insertion is justified by its excellent antioxidant and pharmacological properties. All formulations containing chitosan presented inhibition halo for the microorganism Staphylococcus aureus justifying its addition. Regardless of the turmeric incorporation, the blended films containing the two biopolymers presented greater adhesiveness, remaining adhered to the swine mucosa used as a model surface for a longer time. In the migration tests after immersion in PBS buffer solutions, it was observed that the higher absorbance values occurred for films containing the bioactive agent. Considering the absence of an agreed definition of urban violence, this article suggests that exploring the violence-security nexus in the context of planetary urbanisation provides some necessary steps for theorisation. Moving from the analytical toward the conceptual, we offer three conceptual shifts, intended as steps toward a theory of urban violence: first, from violence in the city to violence in/of/through an age of planetary urbanisation; second, beyond the dichotomous thinking about the violence-security nexus; third, from manifestations of violence in the city to the 'threshold' (of visibility) beyond which a city is understood, and depicted, as violent. Thermoradiotherapy combines radiation therapy with hyperthermia to increase therapeutic effectiveness. Currently, both modalities are optimized separately and in state-of-the-art research the enhanced therapeutic effect is evaluated using equivalent radiation dose in 2-Gy fractions (EQD2). This study proposes a novel thermoradiotherapy treatment planning framework with voxelwise EQD2 radiation therapy optimizing including thermal radiosensitization and direct thermal cytotoxicity. To demonstrate proof-of-concept of the planning framework, 3 strategies consisting of 20 radiation therapy fractions were planned for 4 prostate cancer cases with substantially different temperature distributions: (1) Conventional radiation therapy plan of 60 Gy combined with 4 hyperthermia sessions (RT 60 + HT), (2) standalone uniform dose escalation to 68 Gy without hyperthermia (RT 68), and (3) uniform target EQD2 that maximizes the tumor control probability (TCP) accounting for voxelwise thermal effects of 4 hyperthermia sessions without increasing normal tissue doses (RT HT + HT). Assessment included dose, EQD2, TCP, and rectal normal tissue complication probability (NTCP), alongside robustness analyses for TCP and NTCP against parameter uncertainties. The estimated TCP of around 76% for RT 60 without hyperthermia was increased to an average of 85.9% (range, 81.3%-90.5%) for RT 60 + HT, 92.5% (92.4%-92.5%) for RT 68 , and 94.4% (91.7%-96.6%) for RT HT + HT. The corresponding averaged rectal NTCPs were 8.7% (7.9%-10.0%), 14.9% (13.8%-17.1%), and 8.4% (7.5%-9.7%), respectively. RT 68 and RT HT + HT exhibited slightly enhanced TCP robustness against parameter uncertainties compared with RT 60 + HT, and RT 68 presented higher and less robust rectal NTCP values compared with the other planning strategies. This study introduces an innovative thermoradiotherapy planning approach, integrating thermal effects into EQD2-based radiation therapy optimization. Results demonstrate an ability to achieve enhanced and uniform target EQD2 and TCP across various temperature distributions without elevating normal tissue EQD2 or NTCP compared with conventional methods. Although promising for improving clinical outcomes, realizable enhancements depend on accurate tumor- and tissue-specific data and precise quantification of hyperthermic effects, which are seamlessly integrable in the planning framework as they emerge. The choice of the pseudopotentials (PPs) is a crucial step towards an accurate atomistic calculation of physical properties of 2D materials. In this study, based on Density-Functional Perturbation Theory (DFPT), we investigated the dependency of the phonon properties such as phonon frequencies, dielectric constant, Born effective charge, and vibrational modes of SnSe and SnSe 2 monolayers to the different types of PPs. On the basis of Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) using PBE functional, we computed eight phonon calculations for both lattices in combinations with four different PPs including Normconversing (NC) FHI/HGH, Ultrasoft (USPP), and Standard Solid-State (SSSP), while other parameters like cut-off energy, k -points mesh, and convergence threshold were kept fixed. However, the phonon properties of acoustic and optical phonons were better predicted by USPP and SSSP for phonon dispersion of SnSe and SnSe 2 , respectively. Regarding the dielectric constant and Bohr effective charge calculations, our results showed that SnSe and SnSe 2 structures possess the dielectric tensor of 8.9 and 6.6 along the in-plane direction by using USPP calculations. Our outcomes also revealed less sensitivity of SnSe 2 polarization to the type of PPs by applying the electric field. This study recommends USPP and SSSP to further phonon analysis of other semiconductors. Biopolymers have received considerable attention in recent years given the environmental concern related to the incorrect disposal of materials based on synthetic plastics. Starch and chitosan are good examples of raw materials of interest, and its combination can exhibit some newsworthy barrier and mechanical properties. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the impact of the acid type, acetic and lactic solutions (1% v/v), used for chitosan solubilization and the starch:chitosan proportion on the properties of cornstarch/chitosan-based films. The films were prepared by casting and characterized by analyses of water vapor permeability, tensile strength, elongation, elastic modulus, antimicrobial activity, and biodegradability. Mechanical properties analyses showed that the films prepared by using acetic acid presented higher rigidity and lower deformation, giving higher values of Young's Modulus and a smaller percentage of elongation, in comparison to the films fabricated with lactic acid. Besides, starch/chitosan films containing acetic acid also exhibited better water vapor barrier properties, showing smaller water permeation values. Moreover, the antimicrobial activity of the cornstarch-based films containing chitosan was confirmed, obtaining better results for the blended films prepared with lactic acid, indicating a high potential for the development of active packaging. Nowadays numerous investigations are focused on the search of new materials for the manufacture of sensors of diverse types. These materials change their properties in the presence of different chemical agents. Polyaniline (PANI) and ITO can be used as sensitive materials to detect concentrations of various ions. In this work, glass/ITO/PANI-LS and glass/ITO working electrodes were constructed for the measurement of pH with dimensions of 2.5 cm × 1.5 cm and 2.5 cm × 2.5 cm. The deposition of the PANI-LS layers was performed using the Layer-by-Layer technique. A potentiometric measurement system for pH measurement was designed, based on the use of Virtual Instrumentation techniques. The results showed that the glass/ ITO/ PANI-LS and glass/ ITO electrodes had potentiometric responses close to nernstian in a pH measurement range of 3 to 11 units. In this measurement range there was a linear relationship between the difference in voltage and pH, which is evidenced with coefficients of linear regression and correlation higher than 0.9. Isofuranodiene is a bioactive furanosesquiterpene occurring as the major volatile compound in the essential oil from Smyrnium olusatrum (Apiaceae). It has a notable potentiality to be used as a botanical insecticide. However, its low solubility together with susceptibility to oxidation and thermal degradation limits its application on a wide scale. To face these challenges, isofuranodiene was encapsulated in stable microemulsions (MEs) at two concentrations (ME 750: 0.75%, ME 375: 0.375%). We assessed the larvicidal activity in the short term and after several days of exposure of pure isofuranodiene and its MEs against the filariasis vector Culex quinquefasciatus. The impact of ME-based larvicide at sublethal concentrations on adult emergence was evaluated. Finally, to shed light on potential ecotoxicology risks for nontarget invertebrates, MEs were tested on the aquatic microcrustacean Daphnia magna and on the earthworm Eisenia fetida. Pure isofuranodiene and S. olusatrum leaf essential oil, used as controls, showed their potential as mosquito larvicidal agents (LC50 of 29.2 and 18.6 μL L−1, respectively). Isofuranodiene formulated in ME 750 was effective against C. quinquefasciatus larvae, leading to significant larval mortality over time and a marked decrease in adult emergence. Both isofuranodiene MEs showed little impact on the nontarget aquatic microcrustacean Daphnia magna (ME 750 and ME 375: mortality < 19% after 48 h of exposure at 32 mL L−1 and 20 mL L−1, respectively) as well as on earthworms (ME 750 and ME 375: no mortality and mortality < 7% after 14 days of exposure to 1000 mg kg−1, respectively), outlining their potential employ in vector control operations. The image of the city as a stressful place is an evergreen topic. In this article we review the imagination of urban stress, starting from Simmel's classic thesis that the modern city is an unavoidably psychic-stimulating environment potentially leading to stimuli overload. City dwellers are then supposed to counter stimuli overload with a series of adaptation strategies. However, the ways in which these phenomena can be conceptualised are varied. Historically, a shift of emphasis seems to have occurred from the classic conceptualisation of hyperaesthesia to the contemporary preoccupations with the design of comfortable atmospheres. Such atmospheres are, in fact, comfort bubbles. In the article, we tackle the aspirations and predicaments of such engineered atmospheres. In particular, we build on Sloterdijk's argument that, ultimately, bubbles fail to do away with stress, whereas for Simmel stress anaesthetised urbanites, Sloterdijk has pointed out that, rather, comfort itself stresses them. To better tackle the magmatic stratum of dissatisfaction that seems so coessential to urban life, in the final part of the article we focus on the notion of animosity. Hydrocolloids have been intensively investigated due to their ability to modify the rheology of the system where they are employed. They find application as thickening and gelling agents in many food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical preparations, due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. The present study aims to provide an exhaustive and comprehensive viscoelastic characterization of a series of hydrocolloid formulations, as function of concentration, pH, and temperature. Glucomannan, xanthan gum, tara gum, guar gum, konjac gum, and gellan gum have been analyzed at two concentrations (0.5% w/w and 1.5% w/w), using three different pH conditions (pH 1.2, 5.5, and 6.8). Their viscoelastic properties have been monitored measuring the main rheological parameters, namely, storage modulus G′ and loss modulus G′′ as function of frequency, time, and temperature. The results obtained show a clear dependence of the linear viscoelastic properties of the systems on concentration and pH, while the temperature was not a critical factor. Glucomannan, xanthan gum, tara gum, and guar gum samples prepared in phosphate buffer (pH 6.8) at the final concentration of 1.5% (w/w) have been selected as the most promising systems for further investigations, exploring the possibility of combinations to improve the rheological properties. Practical Application: Glucomannan, xanthan gum, tara gum, guar gum, konjac gum, and gellan gum have been chosen among the most common thickening agents derived from plants to perform a systematic investigation of the influence of pH, concentration, and temperature on the rheological properties of their water dispersions. The data obtained may be useful for further application of these hydrogels in the nutraceutical field as thickeners, texture modifiers, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and gelling agents. Human mini-brains (MB) are cerebral organoids that recapitulate in part the complexity of the human brain in a unique three-dimensional in vitro model, yielding discrete brain regions reminiscent of the cerebral cortex. Specific proteins linked to neurodegenerative disorders are physiologically expressed in MBs, such as APP-derived amyloids (Aβ), whose physiological and pathological roles and interactions with other proteins are not well established in humans. Here, we demonstrate that neuroectodermal organoids can be used to study the Aβ accumulation implicated in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). To enhance the process of protein secretion and accumulation, we adopted a chemical strategy of induction to modulate post-translational pathways of APP using an Amyloid-β Forty-Two Inducer named Aftin-5. Secreted, soluble Aβ fragment concentrations were analyzed in MB-conditioned media. An increase in the Aβ42 fragment secretion was observed as was an increased Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio after drug treatment, which is consistent with the pathological-like phenotypes described in vivo in transgenic animal models and in vitro in induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural cultures obtained from AD patients. Notably in this context we observe time-dependent Aβ accumulation, which differs from protein accumulation occurring after treatment. We show that mini-brains obtained from a non-AD control cell line are responsive to chemical compound induction, producing a shift of physiological Aβ concentrations, suggesting that this model can be used to identify environmental agents that may initiate the cascade of events ultimately leading to sporadic AD. Increases in both Aβ oligomers and their target, the cellular prion protein (PrPC), support the possibility of using MBs to further understand the pathophysiological role that underlies their interaction in a human model. This piece explores "domesticity" as a social territory defined by its relationship with the conceptual and ecological space of "the wild," and asks whether these spaces stand in opposition to each other or more subtle relations of co-implication are at play. As we look into the domestic and the wild, a conceptual map of notions emerges, including the public, the common, the civilized, and the barbarian. The paper suggests the domestic and the wild constitute two semiotic-ecological domains constantly stretching into each other without any stable or even clear boundary line, and it elaborates on a series of corollaries for studying non-human animals in urban contexts. As an illustrative case study, we follow the story of Daniza, a wild brown bear introduced in the Brenta Natural Park on the Italian Alps in the 2000s. The potential impact of decommissioned mining areas on the quality of water resources is an issue of major concern for local communities. Acid mine drainage resulting from hydrolysis and oxidation of metal sulphides associated with mineral veins or mining wastes is often responsible for leaching large amounts of potentially harmful elements (PHEs) in solution, which can be dispersed into the surrounding environment and affect the quality of the recipient water bodies. The aim of the present study was to investigate the geochemical properties of the mine drainage waters at the decommissioned Salafossa mine (North-Eastern Italian Alps), to highlight anomalous concentrations of PHEs outflowing from the currently flooded galleries and to elucidate their speciation. In spite of the Zn-Pb sulphides still present in the body ore, there is no evidence of acid drainage waters from the mine galleries as a result of the buffering effect produced by carbonate host rocks. Due to their high mobility, however, Zn and Tl are present in solution mostly in ionic form. Conversely, the less mobile Pb, is preferably partitioned in the solid phase. Additionally, the oxidising conditions of the drainage waters also allow the precipitation of some PHEs (As, Cd, Pb, Tl, Zn) in the form of Fe-Mn oxy-hydroxides and carbonates, which accumulate at the bottom of the mine galleries as fine “sediments” or concretions. Drainage waters inside the mine were found to be highly enriched in Zn (up to 16 mg L ‐1 ), Fe (up to 5 mg L ‐1 ) and Tl (up to 260 μg L ‐1 ). Their concentrations, however, are partially diluted in the mine due to a mixing with less mineralised waters before being discharged into the Piave River, the major tributary downstream from the mining area. Although drainage waters are still characterised by high concentrations of Tl (about 30 μg L ‐1 ) at their outflow, dilution in the Piave River seems to be the only natural process mitigating the impact of PHEs within the drainage basin. Over the last couple of decades, urban sports have been studied -- as well as, in many cases, celebrated -- as critical forms of using urban space. Urban climbing, a practice also known as "street bouldering," "buildering," "structuring," and "stegophilia," has been much explored in this vein. While we acknowledge the importance of bringing to light the political and playful dimensions of the urban spatial experience, in this piece we would like to focus on a slightly different question. We approach it as a powerful means to probe and understand the finest constitution of urban environments and, more amply, urban morphology. By doing so, we wish, on the one hand, to zoom in as closely as possible onto the actual bodily practice of climbing, and, on the other, to attend its methodological implications in terms of a reflection on bodily techniques in the context of a natural history of the city. We describe urban climbing as a peculiar corporeal operation carried out at and, more precisely, on the limits of environmental control. In conclusion, the article suggests that, by highlighting the meaning of inhabiting a vertical open space of a peculiar kind, a closeup study of urban climbing might help to develop contemporary urban theory. The size of LiCoO 2 cathode particles have fundamental importance on the electrochemical performances of corresponding lithium-ion batteries, especially on their charge capacity and retention upon charge-discharge cycling. Battery cycling and storage are known to promote changes in the crystalline structure of LiCoO 2 cathodes as well as cracks, fractures and dissolution of their particles. However, up to now there are no measurements reporting systematic changes in cathode particle sizes, as described in this study, in which the sizes of LiCoO 2 particles extracted from cathodes of discarded batteries decrease with the battery's state of health (SOH). The degradation of mountain permafrost is well documented at many Alpine sites. Geophysical techniques have been intensively used to monitor these sites, since permafrost degradation is not only a proxy of climate change and global warming but also a possible source of slope instabilities and triggering of mass movements. While the use of non-invasive geophysical techniques is promising, the interpretation of different geophysical results can introduce ambiguities in defining the investigated subsoil and often does not lead to a quantitative estimation of the internal permafrost constituents (rock matrix, ice, liquid water and air contents). To overcome these limitations, we applied an optimized joint inversion approaches of electrical resistivity and refraction seismic tomography datasets collected at two Swiss rock glaciers (Schafberg - Canton Grisons, and Ritigraben - Canton Valais). Firstly, to improve the structural interpretation of the frozen near subsurface, we performed a structurally coupled cooperative joint inversion, optimizing the coupling parameters. Subsequently, we used the petrophysical joint inversion to quantify the composition of these mountain permafrost substrates, optimizing the numerical and petrophysical parameters. The obtained results agree with field observations and the borehole data collected at these two sites, opening new perspectives for the future quantitative monitoring of permafrost constituents. Increasing mean annual temperatures over the last decades has led to glacier melt and permafrost thawing. The degradation of glaciers is easier to quantify as they are visible on the surface, as opposed to permafrost which is found in the subsoil and must therefore be studied with direct drilling techniques or with non-invasive geophysical methods. Drilling investigations are expensive and complicated to perform in high mountain environments and only provide 1D information. Geophysical surveys can be used to quickly and economically characterize larger areas. Since permafrost thawing is a risk factor in high mountain environments (inducing e.g. instability of infrastructure, or triggering rock falls and landslides), it is important to have reliable geophysical techniques to study these environments. Background: Trypanosomatids are a group of protozoan parasites that includes the etiologic agents of important human illnesses as Chagas disease, sleeping sickness and leishmaniasis. These parasites have a significant distinction from other eukaryotes concerning mRNA structure, since all mature mRNAs have an identical species-specific sequence of 39 nucleotides at the 5' extremity, named spliced leader (SL). Considering this peculiar aspect of trypanosomatid mRNA, the aim of the present work was to develop a Trypanosoma cruzi specific in vitro transcription (IVT) linear mRNA amplification method in order to improve parasite transcriptomics analyses. Methods: We designed an oligonucleotide complementary to the last 21 bases of T. cruzi SL sequence, bearing an upstream T7 promoter (T7SL primer), which was used to direct the synthesis of second-strand cDNA. Original mRNA was then amplified by IVT using T7 RNA polymerase. T7SL-amplified RNA from two distinct T. cruzi stages (epimastigotes and trypomastigotes) were deep sequenced in SOLiD platform. Usual poly(A) + RNA and and T7-oligo(dT) amplified RNA (Eberwine method) were also sequenced. RNA-Seq reads were aligned to our new and improved T. cruzi Dm28c genome assembly (PacBio technology) and resulting transcriptome pattern from these three RNA preparation methods were compared, mainly concerning the conservation of mRNA transcritional levels and DEGs detection between epimastigotes and trypomastigotes. Results: T7SL IVT method detected more potential differentially expressed genes in comparison to either poly(A) + RNA or T7dT IVT, and was also able to produce reliable quantifications of the parasite transcriptome down to 3 ng of total RNA. Furthermore, amplification of parasite mRNA in HeLa/epimastigote RNA mixtures showed that T7SL IVT generates transcriptome quantification with similar detection of differentially expressed genes when parasite RNA mass was only 0.1% of the total mixture (R = 0.78 when compared to poly(A) + RNA). Conclusions: The T7SL IVT amplification method presented here allows the detection of more potential parasite differentially expressed genes (in comparison to poly(A) + RNA) in host-parasite mixtures or samples with low amount of RNA. This method is especially useful for trypanosomatid transcriptomics because it produces less bias than PCR-based mRNA amplification. Objective To evaluate the craniofacial changes induced by functional appliances with special regard to the oro and nasopharyngeal sagittal airway dimensions in subjects with dentoskeletal Class II malocclusions when compared with an untreated Class II control group immediately after therapy and at long-term observation. Methods A group of 40 patients (21 females and 19 males) with Class II malocclusion treated consecutively either with a Bionator or an Activator followed by fixed appliances was compared with a matched control group of 31 subjects (16 females and 15 males) with untreated Class II malocclusion. The treated sample was evaluated at T1, start of treatment (mean age: 9.9 ± 1.4 years); T2, end of functional treatment and prior to fixed appliances (mean age: 11.9 ± 1.3 years); and T3, long-term observation at the end of growth (mean age: 18.2 ± 2.1 years). Statistical comparisons were performed with independent sample t tests at T1 (baseline characteristics) and for the T1−T2, T2-T3, and T1-T3 changes. Results During active treatment the treated group showed a significant increment in lower airway dimension (PNS-AD1), as well as a significant improvement in the upper airway dimension (PNS-AD2). A significant decrease in the upper adenoid size (AD2-H) was also found. In the longterm evaluation, a significant increase in both lower and upper airway thickness (PNS-AD1; PNS-AD2) and a significant decrease in the upper adenoid thickness were still present in the treated group. Conclusion The treatment with functional appliances produced significant favorable changes during active treatment in the oro- and nasopharyngeal sagittal airway dimensions in dentoskeletal Class II subjects when compared with untreated controls, and these changes were stable in the long-term. Purpose This work aims to evaluate the application of a cylindrical phantom made of dosimetric gel containing alanine pellets distributed inside the gel volume during an end-to-end test of a single isocenter VMAT for simultaneous treatment of multiple brain metastases. The evaluation is based on the comparison of the results obtained with the composite phantom with the treatment planning system ( TPS) dose distribution validated by using the clinical conventional quality control with point and planar dose measurements. Methods A cylindrical MAGIC-f gel phantom containing alanine dosimeters (composite phantom) was used to design the VMAT plan in the treatment planning system ( TPS). The alanine dosimeters were pellets with radius of 2.5 mm and height of 3 mm, and played the role of brain metastasis inside the gel cylinder, which simulated the cerebral tissue. Five of the alanine dosimeters were selected to simulate five lesions; five planning target volumes ( PTVs) were created including the dosimeters and irradiated with different doses. Conventional quality assurance ( QA) was performed on the TPS plan and on the composite phantom; a phantom containing only gel (Gel 1 phantom) was also irradiated. One day after irradiation, magnetic resonance images were acquired for both phantoms on a 3T scanner. An electron spin resonance spectrometer was used to evaluate alanine doses. Calibration curves were constructed for the alanine and the gel dosimeters. All the gel only measurement was repeated (Gel 2 phantom) in order to confirm the previous gel measurement. Results The VMAT treatment plan was approved by the conventional QA. The doses measured by alanine dosimeters on the composite gel phantom agreed to the TPS on average within 3.3%. The alanine dose for each lesion was used to calibrate the gel dosimeter measurements of the concerned PTV. Both gel dose volume histograms ( DVH) achieved for each PTV were in agreement with the expected TPS DVH, except for a small discrepancy observed for the Gel 2 curve of PTV1 and the Gel 1 curve of PTV5. In a 3D gamma analyses performed for each PTV volume independently, comparing both the gels' measurements to the TPS and using 3%/3 mm, 5%/2 mm, and 7%/2 mm, more than 90% of the points were approved for all the PTVs, except for the PTV5 comparison in the Gel 1 measurement and for the PTV2 comparison in the Gel 2 measurement. A 3D gamma analysis was also applied for each PTV independently, to compare both gel measurements in order to evaluate the consistence of repeated gel measurements of the same plan, and more than 94.5% of the points were approved. Conclusions The composite Gel-Alanine phantom can be used for the end-to-end test of a single isocenter VMAT for simultaneous treatment of multiple brain metastases. The use of the alanine as the lesion cores for the treatment planning provided the precise dose measurements inside each lesion and allowed the conversion of the gel R2 values based on an accurate dose measurement inside the target. Ultra-high molecular-weight polyethylene has been used in total joint replacement for the last three decades. Many attempts have been made to improve the wear behaviour of this material. Highly cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) has been developed to decrease the wear rate, while the addition of stabilizers such as vitamin E has been proposed to slow the oxidation processes. In this study, we compared the wear behaviour of conventional ultra-high molecular-weight polyethylene, XLPE and vitamin E-added XLPE acetabular cups for total hip arthroplasty. The samples were run for five million cycles on a hip joint simulator (first test), then underwent an accelerated ageing treatment, were tested again for two million cycles (second test) and finally were run for another two million cycles in presence of third-body particles (third test). Our study showed that vitamin E-added XLPE cups had a better wear behaviour only in the long-term and more severe testing conditions: in the third test, they underwent the lowest increase in wear rate. Micro-Raman spectroscopy allowed us to analyse the wear degradation of the cups on a molecular scale, and differences in the wear mechanisms were revealed. The presence of vitamin E did not prevent structural changes upon the first test, while it did in ageing and in the second test. In the third test, more significant structural changes were observed; the XLPE cups, which lost the lowest mass, had the most modified articular surface. These morphological aspects should be taken into account, together with gravimetric wear rates, in the characterization of wear degradation. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Biolox® delta has been widely used in joint replacements thanks to its high strength and wear resistance. In this study, eleven Biolox® delta femoral head retrievals affected by metal transfer (MT) were analysed by Raman spectroscopy to estimate the tetragonal to monoclinic zirconia phase transformation, whose occurrence may compromise ceramic chemical stability and mechanical strength. The residual stress state was evaluated by both Raman and photoemission spectroscopy. Vm monoclinic zirconia contents were higher near the centre of the articulating surface and in the MT area than in the border control area of the retrievals. In only one retrieval, stress related to MT appeared a more severe condition, able to induce zirconia phase transformation; for all the others, stresses related to loading in the central region and related to MT, were conducive to a zirconia phase transformation of nearly the same extent. Vm depth profiling analyses showed that the transformation involved different thicknesses in different samples. Raman data allowed for the investigation of the mechanism of zirconia phase transformation and confirmed that the growth stage was absent and the nucleation stage was not occurring as freely as it would in unconstrained zirconia.
