Mixes of compatible beneficial microorganisms can perform better than single strains to support plant health and growth. This study examined effects of inoculating tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) roots with individual and mixed suspensions of Trichoderma harzianum ITEM 3636 and Pseudomonas putida PCI2 on growth and yield in field assays. Culture filtrates were used to observe in vitro compatibility between strains. Effects of ITEM 3636 on tomato seedlings in vitro were studied. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine root colonization by the bacterial and fungal strains. ITEM 3636 was compatible with PCI2 and improved root density in vitro. When compared to other treatments, co-inoculation of tomato plants consistently resulted in increases in the number of fruit and yield under field conditions. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) represents a broad spectrum of liver damage, ranging from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis and fibrosis; as well, there is a close association between NAFLD, obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus. There is a certain degree of uncertainty regarding the natural history and prognosis of NAFLD; however, several methods are currently used for its diagnostic approach. In the first instance, non-invasive tests could be used to identify patients at low risk of developing fibrosis and to establish more easily the need for a liver biopsy, whose accuracy in the evaluation of fibrosis has been questioned, mainly due to errors of intra and interobserver sampling, technical problems and cost, which limits its use. Because of systematic sampling campaigns in the northern Patagonian Nothofagaceae forests of Argentina, several specimens of sequestrate fungi were collected. Some of those collections showed phylogenetic affinities and morphological similarities to members of the formerly recognized sequestrate genus Thaxterogaster, currently a synonym of Cortinarius on the basis of molecular data. Comparisons of macro- and micromorphological features and sequences of nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions have revealed that these collections belong to formerly undescribed species. The sequences of the four new taxa presented here, Cortinarius flavopurpureus, C. translucidus, C. nahuelhuapensis, and C. infrequens, were combined into a data set including additional sequences generated from herbarium collections and retrieved from public gene databases and analyzed by maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods. The four new species were resolved as distinct clades with strong support; at the same time, they showed unique morphological characteristics (hypogeous to subhypogeous habit, complete gasteromycetation, and spore shape and ornamentation) that separate them from previously described Cortinarius species. In addition, several undescribed and/or not previously sequenced species from these forests were detected through phylogenetic analysis of ectomycorrhizal root tip sequences. Tomato is one of the most economically attractive vegetable crops due to its high yields. Diseases cause significant losses in tomato production worldwide. We carried out Polymerase Chain Reaction studies to detect the presence of genes encoding antifungal compounds in the DNA of Pseudomonas putida strain PCI2. We also used liquid chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry to detect and quantify the production of compounds that increase the resistance of plants to diseases from culture supernatants of PCI2. In addition, we investigated the presence of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase in PCI2. Finally, PCI2 was used for inoculation of tomato seeds to study its potential biocontrol activity against Fusarium oxysporum MR193. The obtained results showed that no fragments for the encoding genes of hydrogen cyanide, pyoluteorin, 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol, pyrrolnitrin, or phenazine-1-carboxylic acid were amplified from the DNA of PCI2. On the other hand, PCI2 produced salicylic acid and jasmonic acid in Luria-Bertani medium and grew in a culture medium containing ACC as the sole nitrogen source. We observed a reduction in disease incidence from 53.33 % in the pathogen control to 30 % in tomato plants pre-inoculated with PCI2 as well as increases in shoot and root dry weights in inoculated plants, as compared to the pathogenicity control. This study suggests that inoculation of tomato seeds with P. putida PCI2 increases the resistance of plants to root rot caused by F. oxysporum and that PCI2 produces compounds that may be involved at different levels in increasing such resistance. On the basis of knowledge and values from different social actors, we investigated what biophysical properties of the wood are linked to good-quality firewood in the semiarid Chaco forest of central-western Argentina. We applied social actor-tailored semi-structured interviews to incorporate the perspectives of: a) two kinds of local social actors who carry out their productive activities in the forest (subsistence farmers and cattle ranchers), and b) ecologists. We identified plant attributes associated with the desirable or undesirable qualities after lighting firewood, and tested them through an innovative experimental game. We then calculated the fuel value index of each native woody species of the study area mentioned by local actors as a firewood source, on the basis of quantitative measurements, and compared it with their stated preference, finding partial coincidence. This is because, while the fuel value index includes some traits considered relevant, when assessing firewood quality people also consider other factors that do not intervene in this index (e.g., abundance, accessibility, effort, market preferences). The inputs from different kinds of knowledge and the implementation of qualitative and quantitative strategies gave a broader view of the valuation of plants for firewood, representing a much richer picture than that offered by each knowledge system and approach separately. Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal associates of Alnus are relatively few in comparison with those associated with other tree hosts. The composition of ECM assemblages associated with Alnus seems to change very little across the Northern Hemisphere. However, Alnus-associated ECM assemblages from the Western United States, Mexico, and Argentina tend to differ from those in eastern North America and Europe, presumably due to their different biogeographic histories. Alnus glutinosa is a northern European species subjected to diverse environmental conditions. To address intrageneric host preference within two distantly related Alnus species ( Alnus acuminata and A. glutinosa), we tested the ECM colonization on seedlings of both species inoculated with natural soil from A. acuminata forests. Two tomentelloid ECM fungi from A. acuminata natural soils were determined from the anatomotyping and molecular analysis. Both species colonized A. glutinosa seedlings and presented similar relative abundances. Additional soil sequence data from A. acuminata sites suggest that a variety of tomentelloid taxa occur, including several unidentified Tomentella lineages. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences from various locations do not reflect associations of taxa based on their biogeographic origin, and clades are in general constituted by sequences from diverse regions, including South America, Mexico, USA, and Europe. Results illustrate the probable role of specific tomentelloid fungi in the early colonization of seedlings in A. acuminata forests as well as their importance in the structure of the ECM propagule community at the sites. Pseudomonas chlororaphissubsp.aurantiacaSR1 was evaluated for control ofMacrophomina phaseolina in vitroand in soybean plants, for growth promotion of soybean plants and for production of antifungal compounds. Strain SR1 caused a significant inhibition ofM. phaseolina in vitroand reduced damping-off in thein vivoassays. In addition, strain SR1 significantly increased shoot and root length and shoot and root dry weight of soybean plants inM. phaseolinainfested soil, as compared to control plants in infested soil. Fragments for the phenazine-1-carboxylic acid, pyrrolnitrin and hydrogen cyanide encoding genes were amplified from the DNA of strain SR1 after polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays with specific primers. Thus, this study establishes thatP. chlororaphissubsp.aurantiacaSR1 provides control ofM. phaseolina in vivoand suggests that strain SR1 might be applied as an effective biocontrol agent to protect soybean plants from this phytopathogen. The Yungas, a system of tropical and subtropical montane forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes, are extremely diverse and severely threatened by anthropogenic pressure and climate change. Previous mycological works focused on macrofungi (e.g. agarics, polypores) and mycorrhizae in Alnus acuminata forests, while fungal diversity in other parts of the Yungas has remained mostly unexplored. We carried out Ion Torrent sequencing of ITS2 rDNA from soil samples taken at 24 sites along the entire latitudinal extent of the Yungas in Argentina. The sampled sites represent the three altitudinal forest types: the piedmont (400-700 m a.s.l.), montane (700-1500 m a.s.l.) and montane cloud (1500-3000 m a.s.l.) forests. The deep sequence data presented here (i.e. 4 108 126 quality-filtered sequences) indicate that fungal community composition correlates most strongly with elevation, with many fungi showing preference for a certain altitudinal forest type. For example, ectomycorrhizal and root endophytic fungi were most diverse in the montane cloud forests, particularly at sites dominated by Alnus acuminata, while the diversity values of various saprobic groups were highest at lower elevations. Despite the strong altitudinal community turnover, fungal diversity was comparable across the different zonal forest types. Besides elevation, soil pH, N, P, and organic matter contents correlated with fungal community structure as well, although most of these variables were co-correlated with elevation. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder among reproductive-age women. Patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) often suffer from metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease, and extrahepatic tumors, conferring a lower survival than the general population; therefore it is crucial to study the association between NAFLD and PCOS since it remains poorly understood. Insulin resistance (IR) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of NAFLD and PCOS; also, hyperandrogenism enhances IR in these patients. IR, present in the NAFLD-PCOS association could decrease the hepatic production of sex hormone-binding globulin through a possible regulation mediated by hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha. On the other hand, apoptotic processes initiated by androgens actively contribute to the progression of NAFLD. Considering the association between the two conditions, the screening of women with PCOS for the presence of NAFLD appears reasonable. Objective: This study aims to contribute to the recovery of Indigenous evolutionary history in the Southern Pampas region of Argentina through an analysis of ancient complete mitochondrial genomes. Materials and Methods: We generated DNA data for nine complete mitogenomes from the Southern Pampas, dated to between 2531 and 723 cal BP. In combination with previously published ancient mitogenomes from the region and from throughout South America, we documented instances of extra‐regional lineage‐sharing, and estimated coalescent ages for local lineages using a Bayesian method with tip calibrations in a phylogenetic analysis. Results: We identified a novel mitochondrial haplogroup, B2b16, and two recently defined haplogroups, A2ay and B2ak1, as well as three local haplotypes within founder haplogroups C1b and C1d. We detected lineage‐sharing with ancient and contemporary individuals from Central Argentina, but not with ancient or contemporary samples from North Patagonian or Littoral regions of Argentina, despite archeological evidence of cultural interactions with the latter regions. The estimated coalescent age of these shared lineages is ~10,000 years BP. Discussion: The history of the human populations in the Southern Pampas is temporally deep, exhibiting long‐term continuity of mitogenome lineages. Additionally, the identification of highly localized mtDNA clades accords with a model of relatively rapid initial colonization of South America by Indigenous communities, followed by more local patterns of limited gene flow and genetic drift in various South American regions, including the Pampas. Fluorescent Pseudomonas spp., isolated from rhizosphere soil of tomato and pepper plants, were evaluated in vitro as potential antagonists of fungal pathogens. Strains were characterized using the API 20NE biochemical system, and tested against the causal agents of stem canker and leaf blight (Alternaria alternata f. sp. lycopersici), southern blight (Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc.), and root rot (Fusarium solani). To this end, dual culture antagonism assays were carried out on 25% Tryptic Soy Agar, King B medium, and Potato Dextrose Agar to determine the effect of the strains on mycelial growth of the pathogens. The effect of two concentrations of FeCl3 on antagonism against Alternaria alternata f. sp. lycopersici was also tested. In addition, strains were screened for ability to produce exoenzymes and siderophores. Finally, the selected Pseudomonas strain, PCI2, was evaluated for effect on tomato seedling development and as a potential candidate for controlling tomato damping-off caused by Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc., under growth chamber conditions. All strains significantly inhibited Alternaria alternata f. sp. lycopersici, particularly in 25% TSA medium. Antagonistic effect on Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc. and Fusarium solani was greater on King B medium. Protease was produced by 30% of the strains, but no strains produced cellulase or chitinase. Growth chamber studies resulted in significant increases in plant stand as well as in root dry weight. PCI2 was able to establish and survive in tomato plants rhizosphere after 40 days following planting of bacterized seeds. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Five ectomycorrhizal species of Scleroderma were identified from herbarium and field-collected specimens from Argentina. A new hypogeous species, Scleroderma patagonicum, was recorded in association with native Nothofagus spp. in Patagonia. The epigeous species S. albidum, S. areolatum, S. bovista and S. citrinum were associated with various exotic tree species. A phylogenetic analysis based on the ITS region of Scleroderma species, including S. patagonicum, illustrates its distinct status within Scleroderma, including its placement among species with reticulate spores. In the Patagonian region, Cortinarius is the most diverse and abundant genus of ectomycorrhizal fungi with at least 250 species. Sequestrate forms were until recently documented within the genus Thaxterogaster, a genus now known to be polyphyletic, and many were consequently transferred to Cortinarius. Original descriptions were mostly available in German and Spanish and interpretations of morphological structures outdated. Despite recent advances in Cortinarius systematics, the current classification, diversity, and ecology of sequestrate "cortinarioid" fungi in Patagonia remain unclear. The objective of this study was to provide an update on sequestrate Cortinarius of southern South America. We documented each species with morphological descriptions, photographs, basidiospore scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, and molecular characterization using nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer region ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 (ITS) and nuc 28S rDNA (28S) sequence data. Original descriptions of taxa were also translated to English and revised based on fresh collections. We documented 24 species from Patagonia based on molecular data and conducted morphological and phylogenetic analysis for 18 previously described species based on type and reference specimens. In addition, we formally described two new species. Four additional taxa were provisionally determined as new but require further study. New ITS sequence data were produced from eight type specimens. We also provide a new name, Cortinarius gloiodes, nom. nov., for the taxon previously described as Thaxterogaster gliocyclus. In addition to the species treated in detail, we provided additional reference information and discussion on six described species that remained incompletely known or for which no recent collections were found. Of the 24 taxa documented from Patagonia, 15 species were assigned to 12 current sections in the genus Cortinarius. The aims of this study were, to analyze in vitro phosphate solubilization activity of six native peanut bacteria and to determine the effect of single and mixed inoculation of these bacteria on peanut and maize plants. Ability to produce organic acids and cofactor PQQ, to solubilize FePO 4 and AlPO 4 and phosphatase activity were analyzed. Also, the ability to solubilize phosphate under abiotic stress and in the presence of pesticides of the selected bacteria was determined. The effect of single and mixed bacterial inocula was analyzed on seed germination, maize plant growth and in a crop rotation plant assay with peanut and maize. The six strains produced gluconic acid and five released cofactor PQQ into the medium. All bacteria showed ability to solubilize phosphate from FePO 4 and AlPO 4 and phosphatase activity. The ability of the bacteria to solubilize tricalcium phosphate under abiotic stress and in presence of pesticides indicated encouraging results. Bacterial inoculation on peanut and maize increased seed germination, plant́s growth and P content. Phosphate solubilizing bacteria used in this study showed efficient phosphate mineralizing and solubilization ability and would be potential P-biofertilizers for peanut and maize. The aim of this study was to compare the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) community of the rhizosphere and inside the roots of the perennial Polylepis australis tree. Three forest types differing in their structural complexity due to anthropogenic disturbances were chosen at three different sites at the high mountains of central Argentina. Rhizosphere spores and P. australis roots of four randomly selected trees were isolated from 36 soil samples, DNA was extracted and the 18S rDNA fragments were amplified by nested-PCR. The products were analyzed by DGGE and the bands were excised for sequencing. In total, 36 OTUs were defined from 56 DGGE bands successfully sequenced. Forest disturbance types showed similar communities of AMF, as rhizosphere spores and within the roots of P. australis . However, DGGE clustering showed mainly differences between rhizosphere spores and root-colonizing AMF. Members of Glomeraceae, Pacisporaceae, Acaulosporaceae and Gigasporaceae were shown in rhizosphere spore samples. Root samples showed only members of Acaulosporaceae and Gigasporaceae, which might be complementary in terms of soil resources exploration. The prevalence of the root system with their community of symbionts might explain the resilience of AMF soil communities to forests structural changes. Abstract: Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), rice (Oryza sativa) and maize (Zea mays L.) are the most important cereals worldwide. However, in the last few years, soil has been submitted to both use and handling pressures due to the increase in agricultural practices, which are leading to its degradation. The use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as inoculants constitutes a biological alternative for sustainable production. Pseudomonas aurantiaca SR1 was formulated as an inoculant in order to evaluate its growth promotion effect in the field when applied on maize and wheat seeds at the sowing time. P and N fertilization treatments were also included in the assays. P. aurantiaca SR1 colonized the root system of both crops and it persisted at appropriate population densities. It also showed a significant plant growth-promoting effect that was reflected in the yield. Another relevant finding was that both crops, when inoculated with P. aurantiaca SR1, presented higher yields with fertilization doses lower than those conventionally applied. This indicated its potential use as a reasonable alternative for crop production, with a minimization of the ecological impact. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
