Pinonaldehyde, which is among the most abundant oxidation products of a-pinene, and dimethylamine were selected to study the formation of N-containing low volatile compounds from aldehyde-amine reactions in the atmosphere. Gas phase reactions took place in a Tedlar bag, which was connected to a mass spectrometer ionization source via a short deactivated fused silica column. In addition to on-line analysis, abundance of gaseous precursors and reaction products were monitored off-line. Condensable products were extracted from the bag's walls with a suitable solvent and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to chemical ionization high-resolution quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry and by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization Orbitrap mass spectrometry. The reactions carried out resulted in several mid-low vapor pressure nitrogen-containing compounds that are potentially important for the formation of secondary organic aerosols in the atmosphere. Further, the presence of brown carbon, confirmed by liquid chromatography-UV-vis-mass spectrometry, was observed. Some of the compounds identified in the laboratory study were also observed in aerosol samples collected at SMEAR II station (Hyytiälä, Finland) in August 2015 suggesting the importance of aldehyde-amine reactions for the aerosol formation and growth. Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) participate in many physicochemical processes in the atmosphere. Studies indicate that some of these volatile compounds can be photo-oxidized to non-volatile species that contribute to atmospheric formation and growth of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). In this study, the applicability of dynamic solid-phase microextraction (SPME) for the sampling of atmospheric BVOCs and their oxidation products was tested. These compounds were then analysed via portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The measurements were performed in mid-summer 2013 at the Station for Measuring Ecosystem–Atmosphere Relations, SMEAR II in Hyytiälä, Finland. Numerous classes of compounds were efficiently sampled on PDMS/DVB coated SPME, thermally desorbed and analysed by GC–MS, including monoterpenes, their oxidation products, and amines. Results were analysed against meteorological conditions observed during the sampling campaign and the total amount of monoterpenes obtained by proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). The comparison of the referred data with obtained results demonstrated the capability of the dynamic SPME method for fast in-situ sampling and analysis of organic gaseous compounds in the atmosphere with minimal analytical steps. Atmospheric aerosol particles of primary or secondary, biogenic or anthropogenic origin are highly complex samples of changing composition in time and space. To assess their effects on climate or human health, the size-dependent chemical composition of these ubiquitous atmospheric constituents must be known. The development of novel analytical methods has enabled more detailed characterization of the organic composition of aerosols. This review gives an overview of the methods used in the chemical characterization of atmospheric aerosol particles, with a focus on mass-spectrometry techniques for organic compounds, either alone or in combination with chromatographic separation. Off-line, on-site, and on-line methods are covered, and the advantages and limitations of the different methods are discussed. The main emphasis is on methods used for detailed characterization of the composition of the organic compounds in aerosol particles. We address and summarize the current state of analytical methods used in aerosol research and discuss the importance of developing novel sampling strategies and analytical instrumentation. RATIONALE: On-line chemical characterization methods of atmospheric aerosols are essential to increase our understanding of physicochemical processes in the atmosphere, and to study biosphere-atmosphere interactions. Several techniques, including aerosol mass spectrometry, are nowadays available, but they all suffer from some disadvantages. In this research, desorption atmospheric pressure photoionization high-resolution (Orbitrap) mass spectrometry (DAPPIHRMS) is introduced as a complementary technique for the fast analysis of aerosol chemical composition without the need for sample preparation. METHODS: Atmospheric aerosols from city air were collected on a filter, desorbed in a DAPPI source with a hot stream of toluene and nitrogen, and ionized using a vacuum ultraviolet lamp at atmospheric pressure. To study the applicability of the technique for ambient aerosol analysis, several samples were collected onto filters and analyzed, with the focus being on selected organic acids. To compare the DAPPI-HRMS data with results obtained by an established method, each filter sample was divided into two equal parts, and the second half of the filter was extracted and analyzed by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS). RESULTS: The DAPPI results agreed with the measured aerosol particle number. In addition to the targeted acids, the LC/MS and DAPPI-HRMS methods were found to detect different compounds, thus providing complementary information about the aerosol samples. CONCLUSIONS: DAPPI-HRMS showed several important oxidation products of terpenes, and numerous compounds were tentatively identified. Alkylamines play an important role in atmospheric chemistry and are of concern for human health. Determining them from the vapor phase is challenging owing to their high polarity and volatility, water solubility, low concentrations, and poor chromatographic properties. We propose on-fiber derivatization solid-phase microextraction (SPME) to increase sensitivity and selectivity for the determination of alkylamines in air samples. SPME fibers coated in head-space with 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl chloroformate (PFBCF, 10 min) or 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (FMOC) chloride (5 min) were exposed to the sample for 5–120 min, after which the derivatized alkylamines were thermally desorbed in the GC injection port and analyzed by GC-MS. The specific focus of the research was dimethylamine (DMA) but, as well as secondary amines, both coating agents readily react with primary and tertiary amines and with ammonia at ambient temperatures. The fiber coating procedures, sampling times, and analytical conditions were optimized, and methods were tested with natural samples. PFBCF was more selective and almost an order of magnitude more sensitive than FMOC chloride. Both reagents are applicable, however, depending on the requirements. With scan mode and use of molecular ion for quantification, the limit of quantification for DMA was 0.17 μg L −1 when derivatized with PFBCF and 3.4 μg L −1 when derivatized with FMOC chloride. When selected ion monitoring was used with the most abundant ion, the limit of quantification for DMA was 2.8 ng L −1 . Intermediate reproducibility expressed as relative standard deviation was around 30% with PFBCF and less than 20% with FMOC chloride. Fibers coated with PFBCF could be used at least up to 24 h when stored at 4 °C and for 5 to 7 h when stored at room temperature. After sampling/derivatization, storage time before analysis should not exceed 48 h at 4 °C or 24 h at room temperature. Abstract: A method is described to determine vapor pressures of compounds in multicomponent systems simultaneously. The method is based on temperature-gradient analysis by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-TOFMS). Vapor pressures are determined with the aid of known vapor pressure values of reference compounds eluting before and after the analytes. Reference compounds with the same functionalities as the analytes are preferred, but when these are not available, the alkane series can be utilized. The number of compounds whose vapor pressures can be determined is limited only by the peak capacity of the chromatographic system. Although the lowest subcooled vapor pressure determined was 0.006Pa, for tetrahydroaraucarolone in an atmospheric aerosol sample, vapor pressures as low as 10−6 Pa can be measured with the described set-up. Even lower values can be measured with higher GC temperatures and longer analysis times. Since only a few picograms of compound is required, in a mixture of any complexity, the GCxGC-TOFMS method offers unique sensitivity, rapidity, and comprehensiveness. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Vapor pressures (subcooled liquid, p liquid) of atmospherically relevant oxidation products of β-caryophyllene (β-caryophyllene aldehyde 0.18 ± 0.03 Pa and β-nocaryophyllene aldehyde 0.17 ± 0.03 Pa), and α-pinene (pinonaldehyde 16.8 ± 0.20 Pa, cis-pinic acid 0.12 ± 0.06 Pa, and cis-pinonic acid 0.99 ± 0.19 Pa) at 298 K were obtained by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (FID) and mass spectrometric (MS) detection. The effects of stationary phase polarity and column film thickness on the vapor pressure values were investigated. Increase in stationary phase polarity provided smaller values, while increase in film thickness gave slightly higher values. Values for vapor pressure were at least two orders of magnitude lower when obtained by a method utilizing vaporization enthalpy (determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry) than by retention index method. Finally, the results were compared with values calculated by group contribution theory. For the β-caryophyllene oxidation products, the values measured by gas chromatography were slightly lower than those obtained by theoretical calculations. The opposite trend was observed for the α-pinene oxidation products. The methods based on gas chromatography are concluded to be highly useful for the determination of vapor pressures of semi-volatile compounds. Except for the most polar pinic and pinonic acids, differences between vapor pressure values obtained by GC–FID and GC–MS were small. Abstract: Twenty one organic compounds including three monocarboxylic and ten dicarboxylic acids, four aldehydes, three polyols and one amine were determined in 61 atmospheric aerosol particle samples with different sizes (30 ± 4-nm, 40 ± 5-nm, 50 ± 5-nm and total suspended particles) collected at two sampling sites, the SMEAR II and SMEAR III stations during different seasons of the year. Non supervised pattern recognition techniques, such as hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis were used to study the influence of the collection place, the season of the year and the particle size on the concentration and behavior of the target compounds. The reliability of these results was proved using a supervised pattern recognition technique such as soft independent modeling of class analogy. The results achieved demonstrate that the chemical composition of the atmospheric aerosol particles is affected by the potential emission sources and the reactivity of the studied compounds under certain atmospheric conditions. In addition, from quantitative analysis methodologies partial least squares regression and principal component regression models were successfully used to clarify the influence of the number of nucleation events on the chemical composition of the particles. Abstract: Three ionic liquid (IL)-functionalized silica materials, imidazolium, N-methylimidazolium and 1-alkyl-3-(propyl-3-sulfonate) imidazolium, were synthesised and applied in solid-phase extraction (SPE) of organic acids, amines and aldehydes, which are important compound families in atmospheric aerosol particles. 1-Alkyl-3-(propyl-3-sulfonate) imidazolium-functionalized silica was tested as sorbent for SPE for the first time. The analytes were separated and detected by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). To confirm the results achieved by LC–MS, the acids were additionally determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The stability of the IL-functionalized silica materials was tested at low and high pH. The effect of the pH on the extraction was also informative of the retention mechanism of the materials. The results showed anion exchange to be the main interaction, but hydrophobic and π interactions and hydrogen bonding also played a role in the extraction. Extraction efficiencies for organic acids ranged from 87 to 110%, except for cis-pinonic acid (19–29%). Lower extraction efficiencies for amines and aldehydes confirmed that anionic exchange was the predominant interaction. Comparisons made with two commercial SPE materials—silica-based strong anion exchange (SAX) and polymer-based mixed-mode anion exchange and reverse-phase (MAX)—showed the IL-functionalized materials to offer different selectivity and better extraction efficiency than SAX for aromatic compounds. Abstract: In the present study, sample collection and preparation were directly integrated with a chromatographic system by coupling a particle-into-liquid sampler for the first time on-line with solid-phase extraction-liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Several organic acids, such as adipic, hydroxyglutaric, mandelic, vanillic, cis-pinonic, pinic, azelaic and sebacic, were used in the research. For sample pretreatment and concentration, strong anion exchange material was used in the extraction. Sampling, extraction and analysis conditions were optimized to obtain reliable information about aerosol chemical composition. To evaluate the performance of the on-line coupled system, half of each sample was analysed on-line and the other half was derivatized and analysed off-line by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Comparison of the two techniques with use of t-test showed the results to be in an excellent agreement. Limits of detection of studied acids in on-line system were between 0.1 and 0.9ng. The on-line coupled system is fast and reliable and a promising tool for the real time analysis of organic acids in atmospheric aerosols. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Atmospheric aerosol particles, collected with the particle-into-liquid sampler at SMEARII station in Finland in mid-August 2007, were analysed for biogenic acids. The sample pretreatment method, comprising solid-phase extraction with anion exchange and hydrophilic–lipophilic balance materials, was optimized. Extraction efficiencies of solid-phase extraction from 10 and 20ml samples were about 100%, with average relative standard deviation of 8.9%, in concentration range from 12.5 to 50ng/ml of the acid. Extraction of aldehydes was less successful, with efficiencies from 69 to 163% and average 10% deviation. Pretreated samples were analysed by reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography with ion trap mass spectrometric detection. Limits of detection achieved for organic acids with the analytical procedure developed ranged from 9 to 27μg/l of extracted sample, while limits of quantitation were from 31 to 90μg/l. Oxidation with ozone was used for the preparation of the acid of β-caryophyllene (β-caryophyllinic acid), which was also studied in aerosol samples. MS2 experiments were used to confirm the identification of trans-pinic, trans-pinonic and β-caryophyllinic acids. Azelaic, hexadecanoic, cis-pinonic, and cis- and trans-pinic acids were quantitated in the samples with use of authentic standards, while the concentrations of trans-pinonic and β-caryophyllinic acids were determined with cis-pinonic acid as surrogate. Also, the contribution of β-caryophyllene oxidation products to aerosol organic carbon was evaluated. Aldehydes could not be analysed in real samples due to the insufficient extraction. The particle-into-liquid sampler proved to be suitable for the collection of aerosol particles for the elucidation of daily and diurnal variation of selected species. The optimized sample pretreatment, together with the analysis method, offer a promising approach for the study of aerosol chemical composition, where artifact formation is minimal and time resolution is good. Oxidation of β-caryophyllene with ozone followed by reduction was carried out in dichloromethane. Reaction led to the formation of β-caryophyllene aldehyde (11%, purity 90.8%) and β-nocaryophyllone aldehyde (79%, purity 99%). Compounds were purified and separated by liquid–liquid extraction and flash chromatography. Identifications were achieved by electron-impact and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and precise structures were confirmed by one and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The prepared compounds were used in the analysis of ambient aerosol samples collected during spring 2003 at Hyytiälä, Finland. β-Nocaryophyllone aldehyde was positively identified and quantified in ambient aerosol samples for the first time. The amount of quantified β-nocaryophyllone aldehyde of aerosol origin was 17.4 ± 1.0 ng m−3 of sampled air. Comparison with previous findings led to the conclusion that oxidation products of β-caryophyllene participate in biogenic aerosol formation over boreal forest during late spring. Abstract: Pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) conditions (time, temperature, pressure) were optimized for the extraction of naringenin and other major flavonoids (dihydrokaempferol, naringin) from knotwood of aspen. Extracts were analysed by GC–FID, GC–MS, HPLC–UV and HPLC–MS. The results were compared with those obtained by Soxhlet, ultrasonic extraction and reflux in methanol. Flavonoids were most efficiently extracted with PHWE at 150°C and 220bar with 35min extraction time. Soxhlet with methanol gave slightly higher recoveries, but an extraction time of 48h was required. Naringenin concentration was highest in knotwood (1.15% dry weight) and much lower in the sapwood. PHWE proved to be cheap, fast and effective for the isolation of biofunctional flavonoids from aspen knotwood, producing higher recoveries than 24h Soxhlet extraction, sonication or 24h reflux. A correction to the article "Methods for characterization of organic compounds in atmospheric aerosol particles" that was published in a previous issue of 2015 is presented.

Amines are recognized as key compounds in new particle formation (NPF) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. In addition, ozonolysis of a-pinene contributes substantially to the formation of biogenic SOAs in the atmosphere. In the present study, ozonolysis of a-pinene in the presence of dimethylamine (DMA) was investigated in a flow tube reactor. Effects of amines on SOA formation and chemical composition were examined. Enhancement of NPF and SOA formation was observed in the presence of DMA. Chemical characterization of gas- and particle-phase products by high-resolution mass spectrometric techniques revealed the formation of nitrogen containing compounds. Reactions between ozonolysis reaction products of a-pinene, such as pinonaldehyde or pinonic acid, and DMA were observed. Possible reaction pathways are suggested for the formation of the reaction products. Some of the compounds identified in the laboratory study were also observed in aerosol samples (PM1) collected at the SMEAR II station (Hyytiälä, Finland) suggesting that DMA might affect the ozonolysis of a-pinene in ambient conditions. In this study, a novel solid phase microextration (SPME) Arrow was prepared for the sampling of volatile low molecular weight alkylamines (trimethylamine (TMA) and triethylamine (TEA)) in wastewater, salmon and mushroom samples before gas chromatographic separation with mass spectrometer as detector. Acidified zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (A-ZIF-8) was utilized as adsorbent and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) as the adhesive. The custom SPME Arrow was fabricated via a physical adhesion: (1) ZIF-8 particles were suspended in a mixture of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and PVC to form a homogeneous suspension, (2) a non-coated stainless steel SPME Arrow was dipped in the ZIF-8/PVC suspension for several times to obtain a uniform and thick coating, (3) the pore size of ZIF-8 was modified by headspace exposure to hydrochloric acid in order to increase the extraction efficiency for amines. The effect of ZIF-8 concentration in PVC solution, dipping cycles and aging temperature on extraction efficiency was investigated. In addition, sampling parameters such as NaCl concentration, sample volume, extraction time, potassium hydroxide concentration, desorption temperature and desorption time were optimized. The Arrow-to-Arrow reproducibilities (RSDs) for five ZIF-8 coated Arrows were 15.6% and 13.3% for TMA and TEA, respectively. The extraction with A-ZIF-8/PVC Arrow was highly reproducible for at least 130 cycles without noticeable decrease of performance (RSD < 12.5%). Headspace SPME of 7.5 mL sample solution with the fabricated ZIF-8 coated Arrow achieved linear ranges of 1–200 ng mL −1 for both TMA and TEA. The limit of quantitation (LOQ) was 1 ng mL −1 for both TMA and TEA. The method was successfully applied to the determination of TMA and TEA in wastewater, salmon and mushroom samples giving satisfactory selectivity towards the studied amines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research into microbial community development and metabolism is essential to understand meat spoilage. Recent years have seen the emergence of powerful molecular techniques that are being used alongside conventional microbiology approaches. This enables more accurate studies on meat spoilage. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of packaging (under vacuum and in high oxygen atmosphere) on the development of microbial communities and metabolic activities at 6 °C by using culture-dependent (cultivation, ribotyping) and culture-independent (amplicon sequencing) methods. At the beginning of shelf life, the microbial community mostly consisted of Carnobacterium and Lactobacillus. After two weeks of storage, Lactococcus and Lactobacillus were the dominant genera under vacuum and Leuconostoc in high oxygen meat packages. This indicates that oxygen favoured the genus Leuconostoc comprising only heterofermentative species and hence potential producers of undesirable compounds. Also the number of volatile compounds, such as diacetyl, 1-octen-3-ol and hexanoic acids, was higher in high oxygen packages than under vacuum packages. The beef in high oxygen atmosphere packaging was detected as spoiled in sensory evaluation over 10 days earlier than beef under vacuum packaging. Leuconostoc gelidum , Lactococcus piscium , Lactobacillus sakei and Lactobacillus algidus were the most common species of bacteria. The results obtained from identification of the isolates using ribotyping and amplicon sequencing correlated, except for L. algidus , which was detected in both types of packaging by amplicon sequencing, but only in vacuum packaged samples using the culture-based technique. This indicates that L. algidus grew, but was not cultivable in high oxygen beef using the Nordic Committee on Food Analysis standard method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new method is introduced for the sampling of volatile low molecular weight alkylamines in ambient air and wastewater by utilizing a novel SPME Arrow system, which contains a larger volume of sorbent compared to a standard SPME fiber. Parameters affecting the extraction, such as coating material, need for preconcentration, sample volume, pH, stirring rate, salt addition, extraction time and temperature were carefully optimized. In addition, analysis conditions, including desorption temperature and time as well as gas chromatographic parameters, were optimized. Compared to conventional SPME fiber, the SPME Arrow had better robustness and sensitivity. Average intermediate reproducibility of the method expressed as relative standard deviation was 12% for dimethylamine and 14% for trimethylamine, and their limit of quantification 10 μg/L and 0.13 μg/L respectively. Working range was from limits of quantification to 500 μg/L for dimethylamine and to 130 μg/L for trimethylamine. Several alkylamines were qualitatively analyzed in real samples, while target compounds dimethyl- and trimethylamines were quantified. The concentrations in influent and effluent wastewater samples were almost the same (∼80 μg/L for dimethylamine, 120 μg/L for trimethylamine) meaning that amines pass the water purification process unchanged or they are produced at the same rate as they are removed. For the air samples, preconcentration with phosphoric acid coated denuder was required and the concentration of trimethylamine was found to be around 1 ng/m 3 . Leuconostoc gelidum subsp. gasicomitatum is a common spoilage bacterium in meat products packaged under oxygen-containing modified atmospheres. Buttery off-odors related to diacetyl/acetoin formation are frequently associated with the spoilage of these products. A whole-genome microarray study, together with gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry (MS) analyses of the pathway end products, was performed to investigate the transcriptome response of L. gelidum subsp. gasicomitatum LMG18811T growing on semidefined media containing glucose, ribose, or inosine, which are essential carbon sources in meat. Generally, the gene expression patterns with ribose and inosine were quite similar, indicating that catabolism of ribose and nucleosides is closely linked. Diacetyl/acetoin concentrations as high as 110 or 470 μMwere measured when growth was based on inosine or ribose, respectively. The gene expression results for pyruvate metabolism (upregulation of α-acetolactate synthase, downregulation of L-lactate dehydrogenase and pyruvate dehydrogenase) were as expected when diacetyl and acetoin were the end products. No diacetyl production (<7.5 μM) was detected with the glucose-containing medium, even though the cell counts of LMG18811T was 6 or 10 times higher than that on inosine or ribose, respectively. Although glucose was the most effective carbon source for the growth of L. gelidum subsp. gasicomitatum, utilization of inosine and ribose resulted in the production of the unwanted buttery-odor compounds. These results increase our understanding of which compounds are likely to enhance the formation of buttery odors during meat spoilage caused by L. gelidum subsp. gasicomitatum. Measurements to clarify the chemical composition and especially the nitrogen compounds in 10nm ultrafine aerosol particles were carried out at the boreal forest site at the SMEAR II station, Hyytiälä, Finland, during spring–summer–autumn of 2010 and in spring 2011. In 2011, laser aerosol mass spectrometer (laser AMS) provided in-situ chemical composition data for 10nm particles. Laser AMS results, for samples collected in 2011, were clarified through comparison with findings for partly published 30nm and all-sized particles from filter samples analyzed by chromatographic techniques, re-analysis of the selected 30nm filter samples for quinoline identification by LC–MS and modified results from previously published atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight mass spectrometer (APi-TOFMS) data. The chemistry of the atmosphere was found to change markedly in mid April 2011, just after snow melt: the concentrations of 35% of the laser AMS ions and compounds determined in 30nm particles from filter samples clearly increased or decreased at this time. Notably, the amount of nitrogen compounds increased and the amount of aldehydes decreased. The laser AMS results for 10nm aerosol samples demonstrated the tendency for nitrogen-containing compounds and oxygenated and non-oxygenated hydrocarbons to increase in concentration after snow melt. More detailed analysis confirmed that the two most interesting, frequently observed, and abundant laser AMS ions, m/z 143 and 185, originated from 1-(X-methylquinolin-X-yl) ethanone. According to laser AMS and APi-TOFMS data, when the quinoline concentrations in the 10nm particulate phase increased, the concentrations in the molecular clusters decreased, indicating changes in the partitioning between particle and gas phases. Abstract: Quaternary ammonium-functionalized silica materials were synthesized and applied for solid-phase extraction (SPE) of aromatic amines, which are classified as priority pollutants by US Environmental Protection Agency. Hexamethylenetetramine used for silica surface modification for the first time was employed as SPE sorbent under normal phase conditions. Hexaminium-functionalized silica demonstrated excellent extraction efficiencies for o-toluidine, 4-ethylaniline and quinoline (recoveries 101–107%), while for N,N-dimethylaniline and N-isopropylaniline recoveries were from low to moderate (14–46%). In addition, the suitability of 1-alkyl-3-(propyl-3-sulfonate) imidazolium-functionalized silica as SPE sorbent was tested under normal phase conditions. The recoveries achieved for the five aromatic amines ranged from 89 to 99%. The stability of the sorbent was evaluated during and after 150 extractions. Coefficients of variation between 4.5 and 10.2% proved a high stability of the synthesized sorbent. Elution was carried out using acetonitrile in the case of hexaminium-functionalized silica and water for 1-alkyl-3-(propyl-3-sulfonate) imidazolium-functionalized silica sorbent. After the extraction the analytes were separated and detected by liquid chromatography ultraviolet detection (LC-UV). The retention mechanism of the materials was primarily based on polar hydrogen bonding and π–π interactions. Comparison made with activated silica proved the quaternary ammonium-functionalized materials to offer different selectivity and better extraction efficiencies for aromatic amines. Finally, 1-alkyl-3-(propyl-3-sulfonate) imidazolium-functionalized silica sorbent was successfully tested for the extraction of wastewater and soil samples. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A complete methodology based on LC-anisole-toluene dopant-assisted atmospheric pressure photoionization-IT-MS was developed for the determination of aldehydes in atmospheric aerosol particles. For the derivatization, ultrasound was used to accelerate the reaction between the target analytes and 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine. The developed methodology was validated for three different samples, gas phase, ultrafine (Dp = 30 ± 4 nm; where Dp stands for particle diameter) and all-sized particles, collected on Teflon filters. The method quantitation limits ranged from 5 to 227 pg. The accuracy and the potential matrix effects were evaluated using standard addition methodology. Recoveries ranged between 91.7 and 109.9%, and the repeatability and the reproducibility of the method developed between 0.5 and 8.0% and between 2.9 and 11.1%, respectively. The results obtained by the developed methodology compared to those provided by the previously validated method revealed no statistical differences. The method developed was applied to the determination of aldehydes in 16 atmospheric aerosol samples (30 nm and all-sized samples) collected at the Station for Measuring Forest Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations II during spring 2011. Abstract: A complete methodology was developed for the determination of ten aliphatic and nine aromatic amines in atmospheric aerosol particles. Before the liquid chromatography — tandem mass spectrometric separation and determination, the derivatization reaction of the analytes using dansyl chloride was accelerated by ultrasounds. From three different ionization techniques studied electrospray ionization was superior in terms of sensitivity, linearity, repeatability and reproducibility over atmospheric pressure chemical ionization and photoionization for the target analytes. The method developed was validated for the gas phase, 30nm and total suspended atmospheric aerosol particles. The method quantification limits ranged between 1.8 and 71.7pg. The accuracy and the potential matrix effects were evaluated using a standard addition methodology. Recoveries from 92.1% to 109.1%, the repeatability from 0.6% to 8.4% and the reproducibility from 2.3% to 9.8% were obtained. The reliability of the methodology was proved by the statistical evaluation. Finally, the developed methodology was applied to the determination of the target analytes in eight size separated ultrafine particulate (Dp=30±4nm) samples and in eight total suspended particulate samples collected at the SMEAR II station. The mean concentrations for aliphatic amines were between 0.01 and 42.67ngm−3 and for aromatic amines between 0.02 and 1.70ngm−3. Interactions between Intralipid dispersion and local anesthetics (bupivacaine, prilocaine, and lidocaine) were investigated. The amount of bupivacaine (the most cardiotoxic analyte of the local anesthetics studied) entrapped in Intralipid in the presence of plasma was studied using an off-line filtration and solid phase extraction method combined with capillary zone electrophoresis for quantification of free unbound bupivacaine. To confirm interactions between the analytes and Intralipid at lower concentrations, direct injection mass spectrometry was used. The use of immobilized Intralipid chromatography-atmospheric pressure ionization–ion trap mass spectrometry in the study of interactions between drugs and Intralipid dispersion is demonstrated. Finally, interactions between Intralipid dispersion and local anesthetics were investigated by electrokinetic capillary chromatography. The electrophoretic mobility of the Intralipid dispersed phase was calculated using the iterative procedure and a homologous series of alkyl phenyl benzoates (C1–C6), and the retention factors for the analytes were determined. Abstract: Organic compounds in atmospheric nanoparticles have an effect on human health and the climate. The determination of these particles is challenged by the difficulty of sampling, the complexity of sample composition, and the trace-level concentrations of the compounds. Meeting the challenge requires the development of sophisticated sampling systems for size-resolved particles and the optimization of sensitive, accurate and simple analytical techniques and methods. A new sampling system is proposed where particles are charged with a bipolar charger and size-segregated with a differential mobility analyzer. This system was successfully used to sample particles from wood pyrolysis with particle sizes 30–100nm. Particles were analyzed by four techniques: comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography–time-of-flight mass spectrometry, gas chromatography–time-of-flight mass spectrometry, gas chromatography–quadrupole mass spectrometry, and aerosol mass spectrometry (aerosol MS). In the chromatographic techniques, particles were collected on a filter and analyzed off-line after sample preparation, whereas in the aerosol MS, particle analysis was performed directly from the particle source. Target compounds of the samples were polyaromatic hydrocarbons and n-alkanes. The analytical techniques were compared and their advantages and disadvantages were evaluated. New chemical vapor reaction (CVR) and atomic layer deposition (ALD)-conversion methods were utilized for preparation of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) coatings of solid phase microextraction (SPME) Arrow for the first time. With simple, easy and convenient one-step reaction or conversion, four MOF coatings were made by suspend ALD iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ) film or aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) film above terephthalic acid (H 2 BDC) or trimesic acid (H 3 BTC) vapor. UIO-66 coating was made by zirconium (Zr)-BDC film in acetic acid vapor. As the first documented instance of all-gas phase synthesis of SPME Arrow coatings, preparation parameters including CVR/conversion time and temperature, acetic acid volume, and metal oxide film/metal-ligand films thickness were investigated. The optimal coatings exhibited crystalline structures, excellent uniformity, satisfactory thickness (2–7.5 μm), and high robustness (>80 times usage). To study the practical usefulness of the coatings for the extraction, several analytes with different chemical properties were tested. The Fe-BDC coating was found to be the most selective and sensitive for the determination of benzene ring contained compounds due to its highly hydrophobic surface and unsaturated metal site. UIO-66 coating was best for small polar, aromatic, and long chain polar compounds owing to its high porosity. The usefulness of new coatings were evaluated for gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) determination of several analytes, present in wastewater samples at three levels of concentration, and satisfactory results were achieved. Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) emitted by terrestrial vegetation participate in a diversity of natural processes. These compounds impact both shortrange processes, such as on plant protection and communication, and long-range processes, for example by participating in aerosol particle formation and growth. The biodiversity of plant species around the Earth, the vast assortment of emitted BVOCs, and their trace atmospheric concentrations contribute to the substantial remaining uncertainties about the effects of these compounds on atmospheric chemistry and physics, and call for the development of novel collection devices that can offer portability with improved selectivity and capacity. In this study, a novel solid-phase microextraction (SPME) Arrow sampling system was used for the static and dynamic collection of BVOCs from a boreal forest, and samples were subsequently analyzed on site by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This system offers higher sampling capacity and improved robustness when compared to traditional equilibrium-based SPME techniques, such as SPME fibers. Field measurements were performed in summer 2017 at the Station for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations (SMEAR II) in Hyytiälä, Finland. Complementary laboratory tests were also performed to compare the SPME-based techniques under controlled experimental conditions and to evaluate the effect of temperature and relative humidity on their extraction performance. The most abundant monoterpenes and aldehydes were successfully collected. A significant improvement on sampling capacity was observed with the new SPME Arrow system over SPME fibers, with collected amounts being approximately 2× higher for monoterpenes and 7-8× higher for aldehydes. BVOC species exhibited different affinities for the type of sorbent materials used (polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-carbon wide range (WR) vs. PDMS-divinylbenzene (DVB)). Higher extraction efficiencies were obtained with dynamic collection prior to equilibrium regime, but this benefit during the field measurements was small, probably due to the natural agitation provided by the wind. An increase in temperature and relative humidity caused a decrease in the amounts of analytes extracted under controlled experimental conditions, even though the effect was more significant for PDMS-carbon WR than for PDMS-DVB. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play a key role in atmospheric chemistry and physics. They participate in photochemical reactions in the atmosphere, which have direct implications on climate through, e.g. aerosol particle formation. Forests are important sources of VOCs, and the limited resources and infrastructures often found in many remote environments call for the development of portable devices. In this research, the potential of needle trap microextraction and portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the study of VOCs at forest site was evaluated. Measurements were performed in summer and autumn 2014 at the Station for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations (SMEAR II) in Hyytiälä, Finland. During the first part of the campaign (summer) the applicability of the developed method was tested for the determination of monoterpenes, pinonaldehyde, aldehydes, amines and anthropogenic compounds. The temporal variation of aerosol precursors was determined, and evaluated against temperature and aerosol number concentration data. The most abundant monoterpenes, pinonaldehyde and aldehydes were successfully measured, their relative amounts being lower during days when particle number concentration was higher. Ethylbenzene, p- and m-xylene were also found when wind direction was from cities with substantial anthropogenic activity. An accumulation of VOCs in the snow cover was observed in the autumn campaign. Results demonstrated the successful applicability of needle trap microextraction and portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the rapid in situ determination of organic gaseous compounds in the atmosphere. The majority of nitrogen (N) in boreal forest soils is bound to soil organic matter (SOM) in forms not readily available to plants. Northern boreal forest ecosystems are often N limited, despite atmospheric N deposition, and the utilization of organic N from SOM is of crucial importance to the site productivity. The effect of microbial produced oxidative SOM degrading enzymes (laccase and manganese peroxidases) and proteases on soil N forms and availability was studied in a pot experiment with or without a Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) seedling. The combination of SOM degrading enzymes and proteases decreased the total soil N content and increased the N losses significantly in the absence of the Scots pine seedlings. The total soil N content also decreased in the presence of the Scots pine seedlings, irrespective of the enzyme treatment. Most of the other N parameters studied were not sensitive to enzyme additions, and differed only between planted and non-planted treatments. Our results show that the alkylamine content of boreal forest soil are at the same levels as nitrate. We showed that SOM decomposition, stimulated by oxidative enzyme additions, is a key step in soil organic N utilization, while proteases alone do not increase N use from SOM. Abstract: The aim of this study was to characterize the organic composition of ambient ultrafine particles (<50nm) in a boreal forest environment and compare the analytical results obtained by different techniques with use a data analysis software. In the chromatographic techniques, particles were collected on a filter and analyzed off-line after sample preparation, whereas in the aerosol MS, particle analysis was performed directly from the particle source. Many compounds and chemical groups were identified with a laser aerosol mass spectrometer (laser AMS) and selected organic compounds, including acids, polyols, amines and aldehydes, from 50nm filter samples were quantified. Interesting components found with the laser AMS included oxygenated and aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic compounds, amines, and black carbon. The amines found on laser AMS may be related to new particle formation events at particle sizes 10–25nm. Correlations between the results obtained with different instruments were clarified, and the best correlations were found between laser AMS and 50-nm size filter samples. There were no correlations between the laser AMS data and meteorological data or on-line measured gas phase compounds. The black carbon found on laser AMS had moderate correlation for levoglucosan found on all-sized filter samples. Finally, the correlation analysis revealed that the information obtained from sub-50-nm size range particles and results for particles several times higher could not be directly compared.
