Coatomer subunit α (COPA) syndrome is a mendelian autosomal dominant immune dysregulation disease characterized by early onset lung disease in the form of diffuse alveolar hemorrhaging or interstitial lung disease, frequently associated with arthritis, glomerulonephritis, and high titer autoantibodies usually mimicking other autoimmune diseases. While immunosuppressive medication has been effective in controlling arthritis, data on long-term lung disease control remains scarce, which poses a real challenge as the progression of lung disease is the main cause of poor life expectancy in COPA patients. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, severe disease, characterized by a progressive alteration in neuronal transmission, which decreases personal independence and quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between QoL and personal autonomy in patients with MS, as well as its correlation with age, educational level, and diseases severity. Twenty-six MS patients were followed-up for six months. All patients completed the 15D questionnaire two times: at T0, when they started a new treatment, and at T1 after six months of treatment. At the end point, all patients completed the Personal Autonomy Questionnaire. The average patient age was 43 years (SD = 10), and 89% of them were female. The mean severity and duration of MS were 3.5 (SD = 1.75) and 9.5 (SD = 5.1), respectively. The average QoL of MS patients at T0 was 0.66 (SD = 0.18), and that at T1 was 0.71 (SD = 0.16). The scores of patients with different types of MS, i.e., relapsing–remitting MS (RRMS) or secondary progressive MS (SPMS), were compared. SPMS patients were older than RRMS patients (mean age 47.5 vs. 39.7 years; p = 0.032), and more RRMS patients were working (0.014). SPMS patients described the same QoL and personal autonomy as RRMS patients. Results from bivariate correlation analyses showed a significant relationship between QoL and age, education, and severity of MS. The study aims to explore the oxidative status related to inflammation in peripheral blood of stable relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with low disability. In this study, 31 people were included and divided into two groups: an MS group in which 16 relapsing-remitting MS patients with a low disability level (age 38.9 ± 7.08, EDSS median 2.5) were included and a control group that contains 15 healthy volunteers of similar age to the MS group. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), protein carbonyl level (PCO), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) as oxidative stress markers, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were analyzed in the peripheral blood sample of the healthy and the MS patients to establish the oxidative stress/inflammatory level using conventional plasma markers. In this study, we showed that the pro-inflammatory status of the relapse-remitting stage of diseases can be easily and accurately appreciated by NLR. An increased NLR is associated with a decreased antioxidant capacity, even in the early stage of neuronal damage. Oxidative stress associated with inflammation aggravates the functional outcome, potentiates neuronal damage, and can accelerate the progression of the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The etiological factors involved in acute pancreatitis are multiple, both pancreatic and extrapancreatic, having a predisposing or triggering role. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the role of BMI (body mass index) in the evolution of acute pancreatitis. The study was performed between January 2018-October 2020 on a lot of 110 patients diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and admitted to the 1stSurgery Clinic and the 2ndMedical Clinic of the Craiova Emergency County Clinical Hospital, the study was prospective. The control lot consisted of patients who were not diagnosed with acute pancreatitis (n=232).Comparing the distributions according to the body mass index of the two groups by the Chi square test, a statistically significant difference is observed (p<0.05) regarding the obese patients who are diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infection (CDI) is the most common cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea and among adults, the worldwide incidence rate of the infection is increasing. There is a small amount of data in the literature for pediatric patients, but most indicate an increasing trend. C. difficile is a constituent of the normal microbiota; however, under specific conditions that cause a disruption of the normal bacterial flora, colonization of C. difficile and the released toxins that cause inflammation and mucosal damage occurs. Risk factors for CDI at any age include hospitalization, exposure to antibiotics, administration of proton pump inhibitors, invasive mechanical ventilation, immunosuppression and presence of associated comorbidities. Clinical manifestations range from asymptomatic colonization to fulminant disease characterized by toxic megacolon, intestinal perforation and, rarely, death. Glucosteroids (GS) are widely used drugs for various inflammatory pathologies (Nephrotic syndrome, Proliferative glomerulonephritis, Extramembrane glomerulonephritis, Nephropathy of the Nodous Poliarterita (PAN), Nephropathy from purple Henoch-Schonlein, lupus nephropathy (LN), Acute adrenal insufficiency Waterhouse-Friederichsen, Chronic adrenal insufficiency Addison, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Polymyositis and dermatomyositis, Chronic granulomatosis, Crohn's disease, Hemorrhagic rectocolitis, Hemolytic anemias, Acute leukemias and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma). Although they are prescribed for their anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties, they also have many side effects, hyperglycemia being one of the most common and representative, which is why these drugs need careful monitoring when administered over the long term. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has caused an important social and health impact worldwide and the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) has elicited devastating economy problems. The pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 infection is a complex mechanism and is considered to be the result of a challenging interaction, in which host and virus immune responses are the key elements. In this process, several inflammatory pathways are involved, and their initiation can have multiple consequences with a considerable impact on evolution, such as hyperinflammation and cytokine storm, thereby promoting activation of the coagulation system and fibrinolytic activity suppression. It is commonly recognized that COVID-19 severity involves multiple factors, including diabetes which increases the risk of developing different complications. This could be as a result of the low-grade inflammation as well as the innate and adaptive immune response dysfunction that is observed in patients with diabetes mellitus. In patients with diabetes, multiple metabolic disturbances which have a major impact in disturbing the balance between coagulation and fibrinolysis were discovered, thus the risk for thrombotic events is increased. Diabetes has been recognized as an important severity prognosis factor in COVID-19 cases and considering there is a significant association between diabetes and prothrombotic status, it could be responsible for the increased risk of thrombotic events with a worse prognosis.
