Parasitoid females exploiting a patchy environment may encounter conspecifics on the host patches they visit or arrive in patches where other females have already parasitized hosts. When 2 or more foragers with differential arrivals exploit a resource patch simultaneously, the solution for the evolutionary stable patch residence times is the outcome of an asymmetric war of attrition. A theoretical prediction is that the forager that arrives first should stay longer than those arriving later, as a result of a resource value asymmetry. This study aims to examine how the arrival order on a host patch affects patch time in the solitary aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi. For this purpose, 3 situations of competition were tested: single individuals foraging on unexploited patches (no competition), individuals foraging on previously exploited patches, and individuals exploiting patches in the presence of a competitor. Our data confirm the theoretical prediction: first-arriving females stay longer on a patch of hosts than second-arriving females. Neither host rejections nor host attacks affect patch-leaving decisions of females, but foraging with a competitor and previous encounters with a competitor increase the patch residence time of first-arriving females. Abstract In invertebrates, wounding can trigger an immune response, and will often expose organisms to parasites and pathogens. Here we show that in the amphipod Gammarus pulex , wounding abundance is negatively correlated with PhenolOxidase activity (a major component of the invertebrate immune response), and that the occurrence and abundance of wounding is extremely high and varies significantly between five natural populations. In some populations the prevalence and abundance of wounds also varied between sexes. Given that, using and maintaining an efficient immune system is costly, we suggest that the frequency of wounding may be an important selective pressure influencing an organism's optimal investment in immune defences. Summary 1. Host discrimination by Aphidius rhopalosiphi (De Stefani Perez) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was first studied on the grain aphid Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Homoptera: Aphididae). Females tended to avoid oviposition in hosts parasitised 3 h earlier. No evidence of host discrimination ability on freshly parasitised hosts was suggested, however, and ovipositional experience had no effect on host discrimination. 2. The effects of host discrimination ability on the exploitation strategy of patches containing different proportions of unparasitised hosts and hosts parasitised for 3 h were studied. Females spent less time on patches with a higher proportion of parasitised hosts, reflecting the females' ability to perceive the potential profitability of the patch. This ability may be based on the nature of the hosts encountered (unparasitised or parasitised). 3. Incomplete exploitation of unparasitised hosts was also observed. It seems that this partial exploitation is related to the inability of A. rhopalosiphi to recognise freshly parasitised hosts. As a female may experience a risk of self-superparasitism during patch depletion, this could promote early departure from incompletely exploited patches. 4. The effect of previous experience on the patch exploitation strategy was also assessed. Females were tested twice on two patches of the same quality. Results suggested that the experience acquired during a previous visit led the females to leave the patch sooner and to lay fewer eggs in parasitised hosts. 5. Patch exploitation strategy may therefore be the result of different factors such as host discrimination and experience. The evolutionary consequences of the results are discussed. When specialists and generalists compete for a limited resource, specialists are more constrained because they are less likely to find an alternative resource. In parasitoids with overlapping host ranges, asymmetric competition should therefore exist where specialists are more likely to win the host in a contest. Competition between parasitoids has been studied mostly in hymenopterans. In hymenopteran parasitoid wasps, females must reach the host to lay their eggs and can thus strongly influence the outcome of competition between future offspring by killing eggs or larvae of competitors. We studied competition between the free-ranging larvae of two sympatric coleopteran parasitoid rove beetles (one specialist, Aleochara bilineata and a generalist, Aleochara bipustulata) with overlapping host ranges competing in agricultural fields for pupae of the cabbage root fly. In these species, females lay their eggs in the soil, then first instars find the host where they will develop as solitary parasitoids and deal with potential competitors. Because adult longevity and fecundity favour the generalist, we postulated that first instars of the specialist would be superior larval competitors. Accordingly, we studied the outcome of encounters between first instars of the two species provided with a single host. Irrespective of its release prior to or simultaneously with its generalist competitor, the larva of the specialist most often won. Moreover, specialist larvae still won half of the encounters when generalist larvae were given a 24-h advantage. This might explain the coexistence of the two species in the field. Insects harbour a wild diversity of symbionts that can spread and persist within populations by providing benefits to their host. The pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum maintains a facultative symbiosis with the bacterium Hamiltonella defensa, which provides enhanced resistance against the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi. Although the mechanisms associated with this symbiotic-mediated protection have been investigated thoroughly, little is known about its evolutionary effects on parasitoid populations. We used an experimental evolution procedure in which parasitoids were exposed either to highly resistant aphids harbouring the symbiont or to low innate resistant hosts free of H. defensa. Parasitoids exposed to H. defensa gained virulence over time, reaching the same parasitism rate as those exposed to low aphid innate resistance only. A fitness reduction was associated with this adaptation as the size of parasitoids exposed to H. defensa decreased through generations. Abstract: Defining host ranges in parasitoid insects is important both from a theoretical and an applied point of view. Based on the literature, some species seem able to use a wide range of hosts, while field studies indicate possible local host specialization. In koinobiont endoparasitoid species, such specialization could involve physiological processes. We tested the ability of two strains of the cosmopolitan and polyphagous parasitoid Diaeretiella rapae, to develop in three of its recorded aphid host species. Both strains produced high parasitism rates on the cabbage aphid Brevicoryne brassicae and the green peach aphid Myzus persicae but almost no progeny on the cherry-oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi. This last species was less attacked by female parasitoids. Moreover, parasitoid eggs and larvae were smaller than in the two other host aphid species and their development was delayed. This abnormal development appeared to be due to an incomplete host regulation process, probably related to the low number and the size of teratocytes produced by D. rapae in R. padi individuals. Such a failure as far as gaining control of the host''s metabolism is concerned could play an important role in shaping the host range of parasitoid insects, leading to local variation of the host spectrum in populations from various geographical areas. Three related Aphidius parasitoid species share the same host, the grain aphid Sitobion avenae. Among this parasitoid community, Aphidius rhopalosiphi is the most abundant species in the field. Both the interspecific host discrimination of A. rhopalosiphi towards hosts parasitized by the two other species (i.e. A. avenae and A. ervi) and the interspecific host discrimination of the two other species towards hosts parasitized by A. rhopalosiphi were studied here. Results showed that females of A. rhopalosiphi and A. avenae both discriminated between unparasitized hosts and hosts parasitized by the other species. This discrimination occurred only after ovipositor insertion, suggesting the perception of an internal marker of parasitism. Likewise, females of A. rhopalosiphi and A. ervi were able to discriminate between unparasitized hosts and hosts parasitized by the other species. However, in this combination of species, recognition of parasitized hosts occurred before ovipositor insertion, through an antennal perception, suggesting the presence an external cue indicating parasitism. Hence, interspecific host discrimination in the three Aphidius species is based on internal or external cues, which are used either alone or together. Our results showed that the cues used for interspecific host discrimination depend on the specific identity of the interaction. These differences seemed strongly linked to the way the different species respond to defensive behaviours of their aphid hosts.
