Despite the growth of the sport-for-development and peace (SDP) field, the sector remains heavily resource-constrained whereby organizations have limited resources but also operate in resource-scarce environments. Given this, we draw on the theoretical concept of bricolage to explore how such resource constraints are overcome. In this study, an organization implementing SDP for refugees and throughout their existence have been confronted with resource constraints is examined. Across the organization's start-up phase and growth stage, multiple forms of bricolage are identified, which enabled the organization to address the social needs of refugees through SDP. We discuss these findings in relation to existing literature on bricolage as well as social entrepreneurship in SDP, emphasizing the way in which the recombination of resources offers opportunities for organizations and practitioners to effectively manage a scarce resource base. In recent years, magnetic skyrmion-based spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) have attracted considerable interest for their prospect in future-generation communication and spintronic technologies. However, some critical issues, which hamper their practical applications, e.g., the long start-up time and variable skyrmion gyration orbit, remain to be resolved. Here, we numerically demonstrate the realization of a fixed-orbit STNO, which is based on an interlayer-coupled meron–skyrmion (MS) pair instead of a magnetic skyrmion. In this STNO, the MS pair possesses a structurally defined, fixed orbit within a broad range of driving currents, even in the presence of random defects. The output frequency range of the STNO based on an MS pair far exceeds that of the STNO typically featuring a single skyrmion. Moreover, the output frequency of this STNO can be further elevated if more MS pairs are incorporated. Our results reveal the nontrivial dynamics of the interlayer-coupled MS pair, opening perspectives for the design and optimization of fundamental spintronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the impact of online interaction between investors and enterprises on stock liquidity, using data from A-share listed companies in China from 2010 to 2021. Firstly, our findings reveal that more frequent interaction leads to better stock liquidity, and this result remains consistent across various robustness tests. Secondly, we observe that the expected tenure of senior executives and the ratio of institutional investor ownership exert a significant moderating effect on this relationship. Thirdly, this effect varies across enterprises at different development stages and with different ownership structures, being more pronounced in growing and privately-owned companies. Furthermore, this paper finds an inverted U-shaped relationship between reply length and stock liquidity, indicating that excessively long replies may introduce noise and negatively affect liquidity. This paper explores the effectiveness of regional intervention strategies aimed at enhancing 'low-tech' SMEs' sustainable competitive advantage and innovation activities, employing the food sector in Wales (UK) as a case study. It utilizes the triple helix model to analyse these interventions, emphasising collaboration between government, academia, and industry to stimulate knowledge-based economic development. The food sector represents an ideal subject for innovation-focused regional development policies because of its global importance, sustainability concerns, health impact and economic outcomes. A mixed-methods longitudinal case study approach was taken, evaluating a series of intervention programmes over an extended period (12 years in total), all funded by the European Union via the Welsh Government. Data sources included program reports, management committee reports, interviews, and case study testimonials. Frequent intervention activities included quality systems development, technical support, and skills training. They notably improved product and processing innovation for SMEs, key performance indicators revealing over 1,800 new products, safeguarding around 2,300 food sector jobs, and supporting 64 new business start-ups. Findings emphasized the value of consistent policies over an extended time period, albeit with the potential for lock-in effects. Generally, marine reclamation land needs to be improved by a large margin before the construction of civil structures in coastland due to poor geotechnical properties of the dredged slurry. The combination of vacuum preloading (VP) and dynamic consolidation (DC) has been developed for application in such projects. However, the effect of the combined VP and DC method is mainly controlled by the start-up time of DC (time of first tamping); in this study, the start-up time was determined by the degree of consolidation (DOC), and the DOC under VP was estimated by pore water pressure (PWP). According to a series of previously studied laboratory test results, the DC can be applied when DOC is greater than or equal to 60%. Thus, DOCs of 60%, 65%, 70%, and 75% were considered as the judgment index of start-up time. During the model tests, the settlement and PWP were monitored and measured. The water content and vane shear strength of the dredged slurry were also measured after the completion of tests. The start-up time of DC was determined when an optimal DOC was 70%. Due to the emergence of the digital economy, traditional corporate entrepreneurship (CE) forms (i.e. corporate incubators, corporate venture capital, and corporate accelerators) have become too heavy and resource-consuming. As such, large corporations need to adopt a lightweight and flexible approach to access startups’ knowledge. Many of them have started outsourcing the CE service, demanding it from specialised service providers. In this study, we document the rise of this new form of CE, i.e. corporate service providers. Building from 25 interviews with managers of Plug and Play and GELLIFY, we analyze how these two types of service providers work concretely. Moreover, we discuss how they differ from traditional CE forms. Drawing on additional 17 interviews with large corporations and startups that have interacted through these service providers, we discuss how corporate service providers differ from previous traditional CE forms in facilitating the adoption of lightweight initiatives among large corporations to access startups’ knowledge. Medical start-ups (MedTech) significantly contribute to the development and commercialization of innovative healthcare solutions, driving advancements in technology, enhancing treatment effectiveness, and supporting public health. This study explores the main themes and concepts related to MedTech start-ups, examines the research methods used, and identifies major gaps in the literature. A scoping literature review was performed by searching the Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases for publications from 2012 to 2023, focusing on MedTech start-ups in titles, abstracts, and keywords. References were analyzed using the Bibliometrix package in R, and a coupling network analysis was conducted, visualizing results on a Coupling Map to identify key research themes and gaps. The research identified 480 unique articles on MedTech start-ups. After removing duplicates and following a PRISMA-based assessment, 79 articles were included in the review. The studies predominantly focused on organizations, including start-ups and Venture Capital funds (46%). Most articles (60%) used qualitative methods, 25% employed mixed methods, and 15% used quantitative methods. Geographically, 63% of articles focused on a single country, primarily the USA (35%), followed by Iran, Sweden, Switzerland, China, and Japan (2–4% each). Coupling analysis identified five topic clusters: crowdfunding for medical research, innovation in medical technology, new product development, digital start-ups, and the venture capital industry. This review highlights the significant role of MedTech start-ups in advancing healthcare innovations despite challenges like regulatory hurdles and high capital requirements. The literature emphasizes the importance of collaboration among universities, industry, and government for successful commercialization. The geographic concentration in the USA indicates a need for more inclusive research. A suite of diagnostics used to assess impurity content and dynamics has been updated, upgraded, and installed on the Pegasus-III Experiment. Typical plasma parameters during local helicity injection start-up are τshot ∼ 10 ms, ne ∼ 1 × 1019 m−3, and Te ∼ 50 eV. The deployed diagnostics are compatible with this modest temperature and density regime and provide species identification, source localization, and estimation of radiation losses. Impurity species are determined by recording time-evolving, single line-of-sight spectra at 1.25 kfps using a SPRED (Survey, Poor Resolution, Extended Domain) vacuum ultraviolet spectrometer. SPRED is equipped with 450 g/mm grating, giving a spectral resolution of 0.33 nm and a spectral range from ∼10 to 110 nm, useful to identify light impurity species in this temperature and density range. An absolutely calibrated spectrometer that collects light from the plasma at Rtan = 15.9 cm and Δt ≥ 2 ms is used as a visible survey spectrometer and for continuum measurements. The radiated power from the plasma is estimated with a photodiode-based diagnostic. Two 16-channel absolute extreme ultraviolet diode arrays are placed behind pinhole apertures, resulting in 32 lines of sight at Z = 0, with a spatial resolution of 2–3 cm and a time response of 60 kHz. A photometrically calibrated collinear Dα/near infrared filtered photodiode-based system measures the Dα emission and around 1040 nm. The SPARC tokamak will be equipped with a hard X-ray (HXR) monitor system capable of measuring the bremsstrahlung emission from runaway electrons with photon energies in excess of about 100 keV. This diagnostic will detect the formation of runaway electron beams during plasma start-up and inform the plasma control system to terminate the discharge early to protect the machine. In this work, we present a 0D estimate of the HXR emission in SPARC during plasma start-up. Then we discuss the characterization of a prototype of the HXR monitor. The detector mounts a 1 × 1-in.2 LaBr3 inorganic scintillator coupled with a photomultiplier tube and has been tested with γ-ray sources to find its dynamic range. Various significant features influence the success of a startup in an entrepreneurial ecosystem. However, identification of such features has not been performed coherently. This study aims to bridge the gap by determining the essential features impacting a startup's success. In the first part, a machine learning-based approach is applied empirically to determine critical features from ten datasets. Then the obtained features were validated using popular feature selection techniques based upon Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE), SelectKBest, and XGBoost to assure the final significant features. Furthermore, mutual information is used between the features obtained from the proposed approach and the ground truth to measure the approach's efficacy, which is calculated to be 90%. The significant features acquired through this approach imply how the entrepreneurs prioritise the determining features in startup success and maximise the socio-economic outputs. This study provides an essential contribution to the entrepreneurial finance literature by empirically exploring the features influencing a startup's success based on its financial performance in different stages of its lifecycle. Startups can apply the implications of this study to reduce uncertainty and enhance performance. This study serves as a research endeavor aiming to explore the behavior of the coupling flow effects of the single expansion ramp nozzle (SERN) in over-expansion conditions during the static start-up process. The open-source program OpenFOAM and its solver "rhoCentralFoam" are employed in the 2D simulation and the two critical geometric variations, the shape of the ramp and the length of the flap beyond the throat, are considered in the geometric variation. The result shows the preferable propulsion performance in the FSS (Free Shockwave Separation) state compared to RSS (Restricted Shockwave Separation). FSS also plays the role of the initial, albeit transient, separation, which originates from the shockwave from the throat and will eventually transform into a stabler RSS state. For the 100% flap length configuration in this study, the axial thrust can achieve a high value of 500 N/m in the FSS state and decrease to around 450 N/m, on average, in the RSS state. The trust angle also shows a preferable performance of around −13° in FSS compared to −30° in RSS. Regarding geometric modifications, both modifications, shorting the flap and bell-shaped ramp adjustments, manifest similar effects. Both conical and bell-shaped short flap configurations demonstrate an axial thrust from around 1750 to 1900 N/m and a thrust angle of around −45°. However, the flap shortening, which may demonstrate an attitude compensation effect, exhibits a more pronounced effect compared to the bell-shaped modification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Startup accelerators have emerged as a prominent mechanism for supporting early-stage ventures, yet questions persist regarding their effectiveness. This study addresses the gap in understanding by investigating whether accelerators promote the growth of all startups or only those already successful. Leveraging web-search traffic data as a proxy for startup growth, trend analysis is used to assess the impact of acceleration. Using a sample of 103 startups from Y Combinator from 2017 and 2018, the analysis reveals that accelerators aid startups regardless of their pre-acceleration growth status (i.e. growing, stagnating or declining). Furthermore, non-growing startups selected for acceleration exhibit better chances of achieving growth post-acceleration compared to already growing counterparts. These findings add important insights into the understanding of accelerators’ effectiveness, demonstrating that accelerators work for all selected startups, not only for those already successful. Our findings offer two important practical implications: policymakers and stakeholders should continue supporting accelerators due to their positive impact on startup growth and reducing uncertainty; startups should focus on their future potential and vision when applying for an acceleration program. Using the introduced approach, future research could compare the effectiveness of accelerators offering offline and online programs, targeting specific industry sectors, and across different periods. Geroscience, or longevity biotechnology, has made impressive advances in recent years that have led to the founding of dozens of start-ups, nonprofits and advocacy organizations, and the formation of a global movement to defeat aging. The community envisions changes at the regulatory and policy levels and calls for increased funding for research. Nevertheless, progress in the field has not been matched by discussions about ethical, legal, and social implications, as longevity advocates assume that seeking to expand lifespan or health span is inherently desirable and permissible. In this article, I make the case for the importance of putting ethics and society back into geroscience, along with three considerations for the longevity community. First, it should seek to understand the needs and attitudes of the public. Second, the community needs to define whether the field is primarily striving for healthy aging (increasing health span) or for extending years of life (lifespan). Third, it needs to define the role of investors and tech millionaires in shaping the field's priorities and direction. Fall prediction using machine learning has become one of the most fruitful and socially relevant applications of computer vision in gerontological research. Since its inception in the early 2000s, this subfield has proliferated into a robust body of research underpinned by various machine learning algorithms (including neural networks, support vector machines, and decision trees) as well as statistical modeling approaches (Markov chains, Gaussian mixture models, and hidden Markov models). Furthermore, some advancements have been translated into commercial and clinical practice, with companies in various stages of development capitalizing on the aging population to develop new commercially available products. Yet despite the marvel of modern machine learning-enabled fall prediction, little research has been conducted to shed light on the security and privacy concerns that such systems pose for older adults. The present study employs an interdisciplinary lens in examining privacy issues associated with machine learning fall prediction and exploring the implications of these models in elderly care and the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). Ultimately, a justice-informed set of best practices rooted in social geroscience is suggested to help fall prediction researchers and companies continue to advance the field while preserving elderly privacy and autonomy. A pumped storage unit is a crucial guarantee in the pursuit of increased clean energy, especially in the progressively severe circumstances of low energy utilization and poor coordination of the integration of volatile renewable energy. However, due to their bidirectional operation design, pumped turbines possess an S-characteristic attribution, wherein the unsteady phenomena of unit vibration, pressure pulsation, and cavitation erosion happen during the start-up process and greatly impact the stable connection to the power grid. Therefore, a systematic study concentrating on an optimal unified paradigm of a start-up strategy for a pumped storage plant is conducted. Model construction, effective analysis, controller design, and collaborative optimization are sequentially expounded. Firstly, a refined start-up nonlinear model of a pumped storage plant with complex boundary conditions is constructed, wherein the delay time of frequency measurement, saturation, and dead zone features are comprehensively taken account. Furthermore, a variable universe fuzzy PID controller and its operation laws are proposed and specifically designed for the speed governing system of the pumped storage plant; the control quality and anti-disturbance performance are verified by a no-load frequency disturbance experiment. On this basis, taking speed overshoot for stationarity and speed rising time for rapidity, a novel open–close loop collaborative fuzzy control strategy is proposed with rotational speed feedback and a variable universe fuzzy PID control. The experiment results show that the proposed unified paradigm has better control performance in various performance indexes, and more balanced control quality and dynamic performance under various complex start-up conditions, which has great application value for ensuring the unit's timely response to the power grid regulation task and improving the operating stability of the power system. This article proposed a technique for a low‐power and fast start‐up voltage‐controlled oscillator (VCO) for a high data rate 5 G New Radio (5G‐NR) application. The 5G‐NR high data rate signals require a fast start‐up VCO to accommodate the short pulse width. In this proposed work, a cross‐coupled pair (XCP) is integrated with a center‐tapped orthogonal symmetry inductor placed at the gates of the XCP, forming an inductive booster VCO (IBVCO). The inductive impedance at the gate of the XCP preserve the symmetry signal profile of the output voltage swing while alleviating the intrinsic parasitic capacitance effect and flicker noise effect of the transistor under the absence of the tail current source. The concept proves with the improvement on the phase noise performance and generating a fast start‐up without affecting the VCO bandwidth. The VCO also provides the enhancement of the output voltage swing under low power consumption. The IBVCO has been fabricated in 180 nm complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology and consumes a minimum area of only 0.7 mm2. The IBVCO achieved a 13% tuning range from 3.3 to 3.75 GHz bandwidth with a supply voltage, VDD of 0.7 V. The total power consumption is 1 mW with a corresponding phase noise of −122.60 dBc/Hz and a Figure of Merit (FoM) of 193.48 dBc/Hz at 3.52 GHz carrier center frequency at 1 MHz offset. In emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs), entrepreneurship and self-employment, particularly among women, play a pivotal role as a means of livelihood. Unfortunately, the share of women participating in these activities is significantly lower compared to men, which has a negative effect on both the development of these countries and gender equality. Usual programs that support women's entrepreneurship are costly. We aim to explore the role of social networks for the entrepreneurial entry of women in EMDEs, as women can 'help themselves' through their development and activation. Our results, using GEM data for 53 low- and middle-income countries for the period 2011–2018, revealed that an entrepreneur on the women's social network increases the probability of their entrepreneurial entry by 3.3 percentage points. Our results also suggest that social networks represent an important source of information that enhances the determination of women to take advantage of good business opportunities, increases the positive effect of self-assessed start-up skills on entrepreneurial entry, and raises awareness of business risks. Summary: The four‐level hybrid clamp converter (4L‐HCC) is one of the next‐generation multilevel topologies due to its simplified structure and excellent performance. However, it consists of several DC‐link and flying capacitors, which must be precharged to the rated voltage before the normal operation. Without proper control, those internal capacitors could easily induce inrush currents and cause system fatal failure due to the unsymmetrical circuit structure. This paper proposes soft start‐up control methods for both single‐phase and three‐phase HCCs. The precharging mathematical models of DC‐link and flying capacitors are established. A straightforward algorithm using the selected switching states and rotating regions is developed to build precharging circuits properly. A full‐scale simulation model and a downscale laboratory prototype of the 4L‐HCC are established to validate the superiority of the proposed method. Results demonstrate that the proposed approach is effective in charging all capacitors through internal elements rapidly with suppressed and controllable charging currents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Student entrepreneurship can take the form of solo or team efforts. While a positive and supportive university context is likely to increase entrepreneurial activities in general, it is unclear whether this effect is equally strong on both forms of entrepreneurship and for all types of students. Focusing on students embedded in universities, we study the entrepreneurial climate of universities and its combined effects with gender and entrepreneurship education on solo and team entrepreneurship. Drawing from organizational theory and team formation literature, we hypothesize that a positive entrepreneurial climate stimulates both, solo and team entrepreneurship. Yet, we argue that this effect is contingent on individuals' intrinsic preferences for independence or growth which may differ by gender and entrepreneurship course participation. We test our hypotheses by means of a multilevel and longitudinal research design, using a large international dataset on student entrepreneurs (GUESSS). We find that a positive entrepreneurial climate indeed fosters solo and team startups of students, with gender and entrepreneurship education having an interactive effect. Our results suggest that a positive climate leads to more solo startups of women and more team startups of men. We contribute to a better understanding of student entrepreneurship and, specifically, the formation of solo and team startups. Our results elucidate the hitherto overlooked person-context dynamics and help explain why a supportive university context can unintentionally widen the gender gap in team startups. Purpose: The study aims to analyze how the characteristics of intellectual capital (IC) facilitate green entrepreneurship development in the context of ecology, environment and sustainability. Specifically, the evolution of IC and green entrepreneurship was explored through a systematic review, including the relationships and interactions between human, structural and relational capital and green entrepreneurship. Design/methodology/approach: Meticulously combing the Web of Science Core Collection, the researcher conducted a bibliometric analysis of 800 English-language articles from 2002 to 2023. Employing co-word analysis and visualization, the literature on IC and green entrepreneurship was synthesized and systematized, exploring core topics, knowledge architectures and their evolutionary trajectories. Findings: The IC elements such as human, structural and relational capital interact with green entrepreneurship; IC enhances the innovation and competitiveness of green entrepreneurship, while green entrepreneurship orientation influences the accumulation and reshaping of IC. The flow of IC impacts the establishment of green start-ups and the emergence of green industries, promoting sustainable growth. Originality/value: The dynamic interplay between IC and green entrepreneurship is marked by intricate relationships and diverse attributes. Currently, no comprehensive theoretical model has been established to address the complexities intrinsic to this study. The evidence suggests that the green entrepreneurial orientation influences corporate initiatives to bolster human and structural capital, with structural capital serving as both a constraint and catalyst for human capital. The paper presents an embryonic framework of IC for green entrepreneurship, highlighting its critical role in the aggregation and reconfiguration of IC or venture creation and industry evolution. This study was conducted to investigate the role of academicians as mentors to student startup entrepreneurs in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Although the lecturers at Polytechnic and Community College (PolyCC) may not be real entrepreneurs themselves, they have effectively nurtured student entrepreneurs who have sustained their businesses to this day. Nevertheless, this success rate is quite modest when compared to the total number of mentors that have been appointed. Hence, the objective of this study is to comprehend the methods by which nonentrepreneurial academics effectively fulfill their responsibilities as mentors, as well as the aspects that impact their efficacy in mentoring students toward entrepreneurship. The research design employed in this study is qualitative and utilizes a semi-structured interview instrument. The instrument's validity has been confirmed by four experts, and it exhibits a Cohen's Kappa value of 1.0. The sampling method employed is purposive sampling, specifically targeting lecturers from PolyCC who have been selected as 15 finalists in the category of Best Entrepreneurship Mentor Award for the Ministry of Higher Education Entrepreneurship Award (MEA) 2021. These lecturers also serve as mentors to student startup entrepreneurs at PolyCC, and the student entrepreneurs have successfully sustained their businesses up to the present time. The data obtained from the interviews were subjected to thematic analysis using ATLAS.ti 9 to discern patterns, trends, and interrelationships among the data pieces. The research yielded a theme and competency framework model with an inter-rater reliability, as measured by Cohen's Kappa value, of 0.99. The research yielded an "Entrepreneurship Mentoring Synergy Diagram (EMSD)," a visual representation that illustrates the connection and interplay among the components of entrepreneurial mentoring. The features encompass mentors (lecturers), and mentees (students), as well as the notion of relationships and interactions with external entities (business networks) and strategic planning to foster business growth. This graphic is anticipated to be beneficial for HEI lecturers who are designated as entrepreneurial mentors. Design/methodology/approach: Forward-looking entrepreneurs drive firm creation. The authors hypothesize that more environmentally conscious entrepreneurs will emerge as environmental awareness rises, increasing the number of green and energy firms. The authors test the prediction using Google Trends data and a novel region-level data set from Italy. Findings: The authors find that not only the number of green and energy-innovative firms but also that of all innovative start-ups increases with rising environmental consciousness. The results imply some "innovation spillover" effects from green sectors to other industries with rising environmental awareness. This study explores the implementation of the university-as-a-service (UaaS) paradigm in higher education. Through qualitative research, it examines student and stakeholder experiences to inform the redesign of university programmes. IPO firms in the technology industry are regarded as vulnerable due to their limited resources, inexperience, and relatively short technology and product lifecycles. They also lack a track record to signal to the market that they are equipped with sufficient ability to overcome the challenges faced in this highly competitive environment. This study examines whether board diversity helps IPO firms perform better in such a challenging environment; furthermore, we explore the potential contingencies that magnify or weaken the benefits of board diversity by examining how its impact is moderated by firm size and board tenure. Using a sample of 363 IPO events within technology firms over 11 years, we find that higher board diversity is associated with better post-IPO performance; however, a larger firm size and longer board tenure decrease the value created by board diversity. The findings are robust to alternative measures of performance and board diversity. Our study contributes to the literature by demonstrating the significant impact of board diversity on the performance of technology IPO firms as well as explaining the conditions under which boards effectively execute their resource dependence roles. Alliances are essential for high-tech startups that are seeking resources and preparing for future expansion. This study examines how the attributes of high-tech startups' early-stage inventions influence the likelihood of forming alliances. Specifically, we explore the impact of technological novelty and economic scope of inventions on alliance formation. Using a sample of 408 healthcare startups, we empirically demonstrate that technological novelty has a negative impact on alliance formation, whereas economic scope has a positive impact. Background: There is an evaluation crisis in mobile health (mHealth). The majority of mHealth apps are released with little evidence base. While many agree on the need for comprehensive evaluations to assess the efficacy and effectiveness of mHealth apps, the field is some way from achieving that. This scoping review describes the current state of direct-to-consumer mHealth app evaluations so as to inform how the situation can be improved. Results: Findings showed a predominance of wellness management apps, focusing on fitness, diet, mental health, or other lifestyle factors. Evaluations were conducted by companies at varied financing stages, with a mix of start-ups, scale-ups, and public companies. Most studies employed full-scale or pilot randomised controlled trial designs. Conclusions: Participant demographics indicate a need for more inclusive recruitment strategies around ethnicity and gender so as to avoid worsening health inequalities. Measurement tools varied widely, highlighting the lack of standardisation in assessing mHealth apps. In a global society that is increasingly interrelated and focused on mobility, carbon monoxide emissions derived from internal combustion vehicles remain the most important factor that must be addressed to improve environmental quality. Certainly, air pollution generated by internal combustion engines threatens human health and the well-being of the planet. In this regard, this paper aims to address the urgent need to understand and face the CO emissions produced by internal combustion vehicles; therefore, this work proposes a mathematical model based on Auto-Regressive Exogenous that predicts the CO percentages produced by an internal combustion engine during its start-up. The main goal is to establish a strategy for diagnosing excessive CO emissions caused by changes in the engine temperature. The proposed CO emissions modeling is evaluated under a real dataset obtained from experiments, and the obtained results make the proposed method suitable for being implemented as a novel diagnosis tool in automotive maintenance programs. Modern high-performance processor systems universally employ hardware prefetch engines to address the "memory wall" issue. Nonetheless, prefetchers are typically activated with the default configuration at system startup, and this fixed configuration does not always achieve the intended performance in the face of varied programs and may even degrade performance. As a result, it is crucial to investigate the prefetch configuration tuning method that adapts to different program characteristics in order to take full advantage of hardware prefetching. In this study, a hardware prefetching tuning method based on program phase behavior is proposed to determine the prefetch configuration that maximizes the overall predicted performance of the program through low-overhead online profiling. In the profiling process, the branch instruction vector sampled by the hardware performance counter is used to dynamically classify the program phase behavior, and the performance profiling is performed for each type of phase. Simultaneously, the recurring program phases are no longer profiled to reduce overhead. Following the profiling, the prefetch configuration with the best predicted performance is derived by combining the performance data from each phase and its running time proportion. The results of the tests on prefetch-sensitive programs in SPEC2006, NPB, and PARSEC demonstrate that the prefetch configuration obtained using the suggested method has a geometric average performance improvement of 7.34% over the default configuration and achieves 99.34% of the optimal configuration. A critical omission in research on entrepreneurial ecosystems is the role of large firms. It is claimed that they are critical actors. However, the current consensus – which suggests that their effects are entirely beneficial – is superficial. We present evidence from a case study of Munich, a city that combines an emerging ecosystem with a strong corporate sector, which indicates that the reality is much more nuanced. We confirm the resource-enriching effects of corporations. However, we also identify adverse impacts on the entrepreneurial culture that arise from their conservative and risk-avoiding mindset. Corporations are one of the most significant actors in entrepreneurial ecosystems. They are widely regarded as having a positive influence on local entrepreneurial activity. However, our study of Munich shows that they also have adverse effects, especially on entrepreneurial culture. We find that although corporations provide valuable resources into the entrepreneurial ecosystem, their conservative mindset, self-interested behaviour, and siloed activities negatively impact local entrepreneurial culture and undermine the community aspect of entrepreneurship. These adverse effects could be mitigated by corporations adopting agile practices when collaborating with disruptive start-ups, developing them into future business partners rather than a source of technical and business talent, and building ecosystem-wide networks with other actors. Research background: The growing trend of financial distress risk worldwide increases the need for effective tools to detect accounting manipulation by stakeholders (debt holders, shareholders, suppliers, and customers). However, the well-known models of accrual earnings management do not reflect the financial specificity of individual life cycle stages and their cash flow patterns. Purpose of the article: The study examines the impact of the corporate life cycle on the reliability of accrual earnings management models and identifies appropriate models for detecting accounting manipulation in Central European countries. Methods: Seven accrual earnings management models were used. They were evaluated based on five criteria: explanatory power (adjusted coefficient of determination), overall significance of the regression model, significance of the regression coefficients, predicted sign of the regression coefficients, and standard errors of the estimated regression coefficients. Finally, a comprehensive scoring model was used to determine the overall quality of the models examined. The study was conducted on a sample of more than 30,000 enterprises from four Central European countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia), with data covering the period 2017-2021. The Dickinson non-sequential life cycle model was used to distinguish life cycle stages according to cash flow patterns. Findings & value added: The results of the study suggest that, firstly, discretionary accruals vary across countries as well as over the firm's life cycle; earnings manipulations have an inverted U-shape with mature firms tending to reduce their accounting profit. The reliability of the models examined was poor in the case of start-ups. This reflects the need to distinguish between life cycle stages in the detection of earnings manipulation. This article presents the results of an experimental verification of three-phase Dy transformer dynamics under no-load conditions. This study is motivated by previous ferroresonance analyses where the occurrence of inrush currents has been observed. The measurements covered all available electrical quantities in a transient state (12 measured and 3 additionally computed waveforms) during the device's start-up under no-load conditions, as well as in a long-term steady state. A detailed analytical analysis is carried out for the obtained comprehensive set of measurement results. As a result of the conducted research, the mathematical model of the pre-magnetized three-phase Dy transformer is modified. Particular attention is paid to the issue of residual magnetism of the transformer core and its consideration in further research. The original strategy for energizing a three-column three-phase Dy transformer with a suitable pre-magnetization of its columns and original control switching system with a given/set value of the initial phase in the supply voltage is put to the test. The evolution of the induced inrush phenomenon up to the quasi-steady state under given (forced) conditions is documented (currents, voltages and the dynamics of changes taking place in the core (hysteresis loops)). This article represents a continuation of ongoing work on the study of transient states (dynamics of transformer inrush currents). This study aims to explore the dryout characteristics of two-phase closed thermosiphon. It involves the design and experimentation on low-liquid filled heat pipes. We investigated the effects of different fill ratios, heating water temperatures, and cooling water flow rates on the start-up characteristics of two-phase closed thermosiphon. Based on the network model, we proposed an analytical expression for the thermal resistance, R, of two-phase closed thermosiphon, and provided an explanation of the various thermal resistance components. Despite continuous work on new power systems for vehicles, machines, and devices, the combustion engine is still the dominant system. The operation of the combustion engine is initiated during the starting process using starting devices. The most common starting system used is the electric starter. The starting process of an internal combustion engine depends on the following factors: the technical condition of the starting system, technical condition of the engine, battery charge level, lubricating properties, engine standstill time, engine and ambient temperature, type of fuel, etc. This article presents the results of laboratory tests of the electrical parameters of the starting process of a single-cylinder compression–ignition engine with variable fuel injection parameters and ambient temperature conditions. It was confirmed that for the increased fuel dose FD2, higher values of the measured electrical parameters (Imax, Pmax, and Pmed) were obtained compared to the series of tests with the nominal fuel dose. Knowledge of the values of the electrical parameters of the starting process is important not only for the user (vehicle driver, agricultural machinery operator, etc.), but above all for designers of modern starting systems for combustion engines and service personnel. The obtained results of testing the electrical parameters of the combustion engine during start-up may be helpful in designing new drive systems supported by a compression–ignition combustion engine. • CCBS, HEPES, and PBS were investigated for improving the performance of anammox sludge. • Anammox activity and reactor start-up speed were improved with CO 2 /NaHCO 3 buffer. • Dominant anammox bacteria was Candidatus Kuenenia with the relative abundance of 71.8%. • Reactors could be started and enriched with anammox bacteria within microaerobic conditions. Anammox bacteria grow slowly and can be affected by large pH fluctuations. Using suitable buffers could make the start-up of anammox reactors easy and rapid. In this study, the effects of three kinds of buffers on the nitrogen removal and growth characteristics of anammox sludge were investigated. Reactors with CO 2 /NaHCO 3 buffer solution (CCBS) performed the best in nitrogen removal, while 4-(2-hydroxyerhyl)piperazine-1-ethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) and phosphate buffer solution (PBS) inhibited the anammox activity. Reactors with 50 mmol/L CCBS could start up in 20 days, showing the specific anammox activity and anammox activity of 1.01±0.10 gN/(gVSS·day) and 0.83±0.06 kgN/(m3·day), respectively. Candidatus Kuenenia was the dominant anammox bacteria, with a relative abundance of 71.8%. Notably, anammox reactors could also start quickly by using 50 mmol/L CCBS under non-strict anaerobic conditions. Entrepreneurship scholars interested in the performance of innovative start-ups mainly focus on the internal factors related to innovation processes. In the present paper, the research perspective used to study the performance of innovative start-ups is broadened by also considering the influence of the context – more specifically, the technological regime, defined as the state of the art of the technological environment resulting from technological changes/upgrades. Thus, the objective of this study is to investigate if and to what extent the technological regime can affect the performance of innovative start-ups. Statistical elaborations for about 11,760 Italian innovative start-ups (data are retrieved from the Italian Ministry of Economic Development website and are current up to January 2021) are carried out through the estimation of a stochastic frontier analysis: a parametric model. This methodology identifies the causes of inefficiency and disentangles random from technical inefficiency of the model. The results reveal that the technological regime affects performance but, unexpectedly, does not boost the impact of internal factors (related to innovation processes) on performance. The main conclusion is that internal innovation-related factors and the technological regime do not benefit each other when innovation processes are managed in innovative start-ups.
