Objective • To analyze the clinical significance of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP-7), members of the bone morphogenetic protein family, in infectious preterm birth, to provide references for future prevention and management of IPB. Methods • The study participants were 20 pregnant women with IPB admitted to between January 2022 and January 2023 (research group) and 20 concurrent normal pregnancies (control group). Serum BMP2, BMP-7 inflammatory factors were quantified. Differences in BMP2 and BMP-7 were identified. The Receiver Operating Characteristic curve analyzed the evaluation value of BMP2 and BMP-7 on infectious preterm birth and adverse pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women, and Pearson correlation coefficient determined the correlation of the two with inflammatory factors levels. Results • The research group was higher in serum BMP2 and BMP-7 levels than control group (P < .05). The joint detection by BMP2 and BMP-7 had a sensitivity of 80.00% and a specificity of 90.00% in diagnosing infectious preterm birth (P < .05), and its sensitivity and specificity in predicting adverse pregnancy outcomes in infectious preterm birth pregnant women were 100.0% and 66.67%, respectively (P < .05). According to Pearson correlation coefficient analysis, there was an obvious positive relationship between BMP-2 and BMP-7 and inflammatory factors in research group (P < .05). Conclusions • BMP-2 and BMP-7 are elevated in IPB and are linked to inflammatory factor levels. Joint detection of BMP2 and BMP-7 shows promising potential for evaluating infectious preterm birth. This paper proposes a team orienteering problem with time windows considering multiple deliverymen (TOPTWMD), which arises from practical situations where firms deliver goods to customers in congested urban areas. In addition to the routing and scheduling decisions, the crew size for each route also has to be decided. Adapted from iterative three-component heuristic (I3CH), an enhanced heuristic is designed for this problem. Integrating two effective methods and the alteration between feasible and infeasible regions, the proposed heuristic finally consists of three components, including (i) an iterated local search in feasible region, (ii) a tabu search in infeasible region, and (iii) a route recombination for a high-quality solution. Besides, due to the particularity of deliverymen assignment, some adaptive changes must be made accordingly compared with the original I3CH. The TOPTWMD instances are generated by modifying the Solomon instances. To evaluate the performance of the enhanced heuristic, computational experiments are conducted on a set of 138 instances for comparing enhanced heuristic with CPLEX and original I3CH. Results demonstrate the effectiveness and the stability of the proposed algorithm. Moreover, additional analyses verify that the joint use of the three components and the alteration between feasible and infeasible regions make significant contributions to the performance of the enhanced heuristic. Underwater supersonic gas jet flows are sophisticated physical phenomena that widely exist in underwater propulsion, such as underwater rocket, high-speed torpedo, and water-piercing missile launcher (WPML). The present study aims to explore the characteristics of underwater supersonic jets. This research carries out two-dimensional and three-dimensional underwater jet experiments and establishes an improved spherical bubble model to study the transient and steady-state characteristics of the underwater supersonic jet. The simulation results show that the entrainment strength and anti-interference ability are the main factors affecting the transient characteristics of underwater supersonic jets. The experimental results show that the jet angle increases with increasing pressure and the increased rate of the jet angle decreases with increasing pressure. The jet pulsation exists in the entire experimental pressure range from 0.4 MPa to 6.5 MPa. The frequency of back-attack increases first and then decreases with increasing pressure in the chamber. Introduction: Seizure is a common poisoning-related neurological presentation in the emergency department (ED). Although brain computed tomography (CT) is recommended in patients presenting with first seizures, its role in patients with a suspected drug/substance-induced seizure (DSS) remains inconclusive. This study evaluated whether brain CT examination changes the management and outcome of DSS patients. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed adult patients presenting to the ED with a DSS in Linkou and Taipei Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan, from January 2008 to December 2015. We also analyzed whether the brain CT examinations found meaningful acute abnormalities and their impact on subsequent management. We compared the differences between DSS patients undergoing CT scans or not to identify factors that affect the decision to arrange brain CT. Results: The study enrolled 97 patients (69 males). The most common cause of DSS was alcohol withdrawal (58.76%), followed by carbon monoxide (12.37%) and stimulants (8.25%). Eight (8.25%) patients developed status epilepticus, 15 (15.46%) were intubated, and 37 (37.76%) were admitted, including 12 (12.26%) to the intensive care unit. Brain CT was performed in 64 (66.0%) patients and four had abnormal reports that led to further imaging studies. The abnormal findings ultimately had no significant clinical impact. Patients who underwent CT scans had a worse Glasgow Coma Scale score (p = 0.024) and higher rate of status epilepticus (p = 0.031). Conclusion: Brain CT does not provide substantial information for the care of DSS patients. Multi-center prospective studies are needed to obtain stronger evidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Neutrophils are one of the most predominant infiltrating leukocytes in lung cancer tissues and are associated with lung cancer progression. How neutrophils promote lung cancer progression, however, has not been established. Methods: Kaplan-Meier plotter online analysis and tissue immunohistochemistry were used to determine the relationship between neutrophils and overall survival in lung cancer patients. The effect of neutrophils on lung cancer was determined using the Transwell migration assay, a proliferation assay, and a murine tumor model. Gene knockdown was used to determine poly ADPribose polymerase (PARP)-1 function in lung cancer-educated neutrophils. Western blot analysis and gelatin zymography were used to demonstrate the correlation between PARP-1 and matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9). Immunoprecipitation coupled to mass spectrometry (IP/MS) was used to identify the proteins interacting with PARP-1. Co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) was used to confirm that PARP-1 interacts with arachidonate 5-lipooxygenase (ALOX5). Neutrophil PARP-1 blockage by AG14361 rescued neutrophil-promoted lung cancer progression. Results: An increased number of infiltrating neutrophils was negatively associated with overall survival in lung cancer patients (P < 0.001). Neutrophil activation promoted lung cancer cell invasion, migration, and proliferation in vitro, and murine lung cancer growth in vivo. Mechanistically, PARP-1 was shown to be involved in lung cancer cell-induced neutrophil activation to increase MMP-9 expression through interacting and stabilizing ALOX5 by post-translational protein modification (PARylation). Blocking PARP-1 by gene knockdown or AG14361 significantly decreased ALOX5 expression and MMP-9 production, and eliminated neutrophil-mediated lung cancer cell invasion and in vivo tumor growth. Conclusion: We identified a novel mechanism by which PARP-1 mediates lung cancer cell-induced neutrophil activation and PARylates ALOX5 to regulate MMP-9 expression, which exacerbates lung cancer progression. A methodology to access chiral 3,3'-spiro-phosphonylpyrazoline oxindoles via an asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of substituted methyleneindolinones with α-diazomethylphosphonate in the catalysis of tertiary amine thiourea and 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]non-5-ene (DBN) has been established. This method exhibits high functional group compatibility, where a wide range of methyleneindolinones with various substituents and heterocyclic rings are accommodated by this reaction. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common reasons for cancer-associated mortality worldwide. The present study aimed to investigate the drug resistance mechanism of the oxaliplatin (OXA)-resistant HT-29 cell line (HT-29/L-OHP) and examine the expression of lysosome-associated protein transmembrane 4β (LAPTM4β), a drug resistance-associated gene. In the present study, a drug concentration gradient method was used to establish the drug-resistant HT-29/L-OHP cell line. Cell apoptosis was analyzed by flow cytometry. LAPTM4β mRNA expression was examined by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis and LAPTM4β-35 expression was examined by western blot analysis. Cell morphology of the HT-29/L-OHP drug-resistant cell line was examined. The results indicated that the intercellular space among HT-29 cells was small, with aggregative growth while the intercellular space among HT-29/L-OHP cells was large, with scattered growth. The apoptotic rate in HT-29/L-OHP cells (11.7%) was significantly lower compared with that in HT-29 cells (17.7%) (P<0.05). LAPTM4β mRNA expression in HT-29/L-OHP cells was significantly increased compared with that in HT-29 cells (P<0.05). The relative expression of LAPTM4β-35 protein in HT-29/L-OHP cells was significantly higher compared with that inHT-29 cells (P<0.05). In data mining, finding frequent itemsets is a critical step to discovering association rules. The number of frequent itemsets may, however, be huge if the threshold of minimum support is set at a low value or the number of items in the transaction database to be mined is large. In the past, some approaches were thus proposed to keep frequent itemsets with compact representation. For example, the approach of maximal itemsets keeps a borderline composed of the maximal itemsets, which separate frequent itemsets from non-frequent ones. It can recover all the frequent itemsets, but cannot get their actual frequencies back. On the contrary, the approach of closed itemsets can correctly recover each frequent itemset and its frequency. Besides, another approach called reference itemsets can recover each frequent itemset and approximately estimate its frequency. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to recover each frequent itemset and its approximate frequency based on the kept maximal itemsets, frequent 1-itemsets, their supports, and some key information. The maximal frequent itemsets are used to recover all frequent itemsets, which are then organized into a simple flow network with levels. Next, the kept key information is used to derive approximate supports of the frequent itemsets in the flow network through the flow process. A facile synthetic approach to a series of chiral 4-chloromethyl-1,4-dihydro-2H-3,1-benzoxazin-2-one derivatives has been described. This transformation is achieved through the catalytic asymmetric chlorocyclization of 2-vinylphenylcarbamates using a newly developed organocatalyst. Background: Human genetic studies have indicated that mutations in calcium/calmodulin-dependent serine protein kinase (CASK) result in X-linked mental retardation and autism-spectrum disorders. We aimed to establish a mouse model to study how Cask regulates mental ability. Methods: Because Cask encodes a multidomain scaffold protein, a possible strategy to dissect how CASK regulates mental ability and cognition is to disrupt specific protein-protein interactions of CASK in vivo and then investigate the impact of individual specific protein interactions. Previous in vitro analyses indicated that a rat CASK T724A mutation reduces the interaction between CASK and T-brain-1 (TBR1) in transfected COS cells. Because TBR1 is critical for glutamate receptor, ionotropic, N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor subunit 2B (Grin2b) expression and is a causative gene for autism and intellectual disability, we then generated CASK T740A (corresponding to rat CASK T724A) mutant mice using a gene-targeting approach. Immunoblotting, coimmunoprecipitation, histological methods and behavioural assays (including home cage, open field, auditory and contextual fear conditioning and conditioned taste aversion) were applied to investigate expression of CASK and its related proteins, the protein-protein interactions of CASK, and anatomic and behavioural features of CASK T740A mice. Results: The CASK T740A mutation attenuated the interaction between CASK and TBR1 in the brain. However, CASK T740A mice were generally healthy, without obvious defects in brain morphology. The most dramatic defect among the mutant mice was in extinction of associative memory, though acquisition was normal. Limitations: The functions of other CASK protein interactions cannot be addressed using CASK T740A mice. A single sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with an operating mode of anaerobic/oxic/anoxic (A/O/A) was developed to determine a simpler process to recover nitrous oxide (N2O) from synthetic wastewater containing ammonia and glucose. This SBR system was initiated in A/O mode to implement nitritation (ammonia to nitrite) and then switched to A/O/A mode. Using measurements of the dissolved N2O concentration and release rate, the total production and conversion rate of N2O were calculated to reveal the potential of producing and recovering N2O in the extended anoxic phase. Results showed that the A/O/A SBR could convert the majority of the nitrite available in the system into N2O by heterotrophic denitritation over longer anoxic periods, and a conversion rate of 77% could be achieved. It is known that cardiac and respiratory rhythms in electrocardiograms (ECGs) are highly nonlinear and non-stationary. As a result, most traditional time-domain algorithms are inadequate for characterizing the complex dynamics of the ECG. This paper proposes a new ECG sensor card and a statistical-based ECG algorithm, with the aid of a reduced binary pattern (RBP), with the aim of achieving faster ECG human identity recognition with high accuracy. The proposed algorithm has one advantage that previous ECG algorithms lack--the waveform complex information and de-noising preprocessing can be bypassed; therefore, it is more suitable for non-stationary ECG signals. Experimental results tested on two public ECG databases (MIT-BIH) from MIT University confirm that the proposed scheme is feasible with excellent accuracy, low complexity, and speedy processing. To be more specific, the advanced RBP algorithm achieves high accuracy in human identity recognition and is executed at least nine times faster than previous algorithms. Moreover, based on the test results from a long-term ECG database, the evolving RBP algorithm also demonstrates superior capability in handling long-term and non-stationary ECG signals. BACKGROUND: Operative stabilization is frequently used in the clinical treatment of multiple rib fractures (MRF); however, no ideal material exists for use in this fixation. This study investigates a newly developed biodegradable plate system for the stabilization of MRF. METHODS: Silk fiber-reinforced polycaprolactone (SF/PCL) plates were developed for rib fracture stabilization and studied using a canine flail chest model. Adult mongrel dogs were divided into three groups: one group received the SF/PCL plates, one group received standard clinical steel plates, and the final group did not undergo operative fracture stabilization (n = 6 for each group). Radiographic, mechanical, and histologic examination was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the biodegradable material for the stabilization of the rib fractures. RESULTS: No nonunion and no infections were found when using SF-PCL plates. The fracture sites collapsed in the untreated control group, leading to obvious chest wall deformity not encountered in the two groups that underwent operative stabilization. CONCLUSIONS: Our experimental study shows that the SF/PCL plate has the biocompatibility and mechanical strength suitable for fixation of MRF and is potentially ideal for the treatment of these injuries. A terahertz (THz)-wave parametric oscillator (TPO) pumped by a stable and single-longitudinal mode Q-switched Nd:YAG laser under various room temperatures is demonstrated. It is based on a cavity TPO architecture allowing stable single-resonance operation and low oscillation threshold. The output results, including the effects of the room temperature on this wavelength-agile TPO with a MgO:LiNbO3 crystal, indicate that the performance of TPO under the lower temperature is better. We obtain a widely tunable THz-wave source in the range 104 to 226 µmvia tuning the cavity flexibly under different roomtemperatures. The peak power of the THz wave reaches 220 mWat the wavelength of 146.2 µm when the room temperature is 20°C. nalysis of spatial and temporal variations in the microbial community in the abandoned tailings impoundment of a Pb-Zn mine revealed distinct microbial populations associated with the different oxidation stages of the tailings. Although Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum spp. were consistently present in the acidic tailings, acidophilic archaea, mostly Ferroplasma acidiphilum, were predominant in the oxidized zones and the oxidation front, indicating their importance to generation of acid mine drainage. The impact of alternate ground-motion scaling procedures on the distribution of displacement responses in simplified structural systems is investigated. Recommendations are provided for selecting and scaling ground motions for performance-based assessment of buildings. Four scaling methods are studied, namely, (1) geometric-mean scaling of pairs of ground motions, (2) spectrum matching of ground motions, (3) first-mode-period scaling to a target spectral acceleration, and (4) scaling of ground motions per the distribution of spectral demands. Data were developed by nonlinear response-history analysis of a large family of nonlinear single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) oscillators that could represent fixed-base and base-isolated structures. The advantages and disadvantages of each scaling method are discussed. The relationship between spectral shape and a ground-motion randomness parameter, [variant_greek_epsilon], is presented. This paper presents an extended inventory model of Huang (J. Oper. Res. Soc. 54, 1011–1015, ), which investigated the retailer’s optimal inventory policy under two levels of trade credit. Herein, we consider the impact of a replenishment policy on the timing of the cash flows associated with payments to suppliers and revenue streams from customers. That is, the same cash amount will possess different money value at different future time. To see this, we adopt the more appropriate net present value (NPV) object instead of the average cost objective. In addition, the deteriorating effects will be incorporated in this inventory model, and the time to deterioration of each item follows an exponential distribution. The discounted cash flow (DCF) approach is used to derive the optimal solution in this study. Furthermore, we first show that the optimal solution not only exists bus also is unique. Calcium/calmodulin-dependent serine kinase (CASK), a causative gene in X-linked mental retardation, acts as a multi-domain scaffold protein and interacts with more than 20 cellular proteins in different subcellular regions of neurons. It is of interest, therefore, to explore whether post-translational modification regulates CASK’s protein–protein interactions. Here, we provide evidence that CASK is phosphorylated by protein kinase A (PKA), identifying residue S562 in the PSD-95-Dlg-ZO-1 domain and residue T724 in the guanylate kinase domain as PKA sites by an in vitro PKA kinase reaction and site-directed mutagenesis. Although the role of S562 phosphorylation is not clear, T724 phosphorylation up-regulates the interaction between CASK and T-box transcription factor T-brain-1 (Tbr-1). NMDAR2b, a downstream target of the CASK-Tbr-1 complex, was then used to explore the significance of CASK phosphorylation by PKA. In cultured cortical neurons, the PKA pathway stimulates both the protein expression and the promoter activity of NMDAR2b. Deletion of the Tbr-1-binding sites greatly reduces the 3′-5′-cyclic AMP responsiveness of the NMDAR2b promoter, and the CASK T724A mutation does not promote the 3′-5′-cyclic AMP responsiveness of NMDAR2b. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is associated with premature atherosclerosis. We previously showed that SLE patients have a higher risk of insulin resistance (IR) and abnormal insulin secretion. The present study was to further investigate the relationship between fasting insulin levels and both classic and novel cardiovascular risk factors in patients with SLE. Body mass index (BMI), fasting glucose and insulin, lipid profile, oxidation markers, fibrinolytic factors, vascular function factors, and disease-specific variables were determined in a total of 87 female SLE patients. The homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) was used to evaluate the IR and secretion. SLE patients had significantly higher fasting insulin, HOMA IR, HOMA β-cell, titers of autoantibodies against oxidized low density lipoprotein, systolic blood pressure, homocysteine, and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) than age-matched healthy controls. There were no statistical differences in disease duration, anti-dsDNA, C3, C4, disease activity, and medication dosage between SLE patients stratified by fasting insulin levels. However, mean values for BMI, insulin, HOMA IR, HOMA β-cell, triglyceride (TG), homocysteine, and baPWV were significantly higher in the SLE patients with hyperinsulinemia when compared with those SLE controls. In addition, fasting insulin levels were positively correlated with TG, homocysteine, blood pressure, plasminogen activator inhibitor 1, and baPWV in SLE patients. The elevation of fasting insulin levels in SLE patients is not only associated with IR, but is related to classic and novel cardiovascular risk factors. Endothelial cell seeding, a promising method for improving the performance of vascular grafts, often requires immobilizing biological molecules on the surface of the substrate material. In this study, chitosan (CS) and sulfated chitosan (SCS) multilayers were coated on pure titanium using a layer-by-layer self-assembly technique. The CS-SCS multilayer growth was carried out by first depositing a single layer of positively charged poly(L-lysine) (PLL) on the NaOH-treated titanium substrate, followed by alternate deposition of negatively charged SCS and positively charged CS, and terminated by an outermost layer of SCS. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and endothelial cells were seeded on NaOH treated titanium and CS-SCS coated titanium samples, respectively, to evaluate the adhesion and activation of platelets and the behavior of endothelial cells in vitro. The multilayer processed surfaces displayed reduced platelet adhesion and activation, and promoted endothelial cell attachment and growth in vitro. We conducted a laboratory-scale experiment using real municipal wastewater with identical submerged membrane bioreactors (MBR) operated under different conditions (sludge retention time (SRI) and membrane flux) for nearly 6 months. Membrane biofilm samples were periodically retrieved, and cultivation-independent molecular approaches were used to systematically elucidate the community composition and diversity of microorganisms responsible for biofilm formation in the MBRs. Membrane fouling occurred earlier and faster in the low SRT reactors which had more active mixed liquor biomasses and higher concentrations of dissolved organic matters. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis and comparative rRNA sequencing revealed that diverse and distinct bacterial communities significantly differing from those in the planktonic biomass developed on the microfiltration membrane surfaces, with phylotypes from the Proteobacteria (particularly the α and β subdivisions) and Bacteroidetes dominating the 16S rRNA gene libraries. This indicated that specific groups of bacteria were preferentially growing in the membrane habitats. Membrane flux had great impact on the predominant populations selected in the fouling biofilms. At lower fluxes, biofilm community composition was quite similar independent of sludge ages and biofilm formation seemed to be the result of a more natural process of colonization and biofilm development In contrast, distinct biofilm communities developed on membrane surfaces at high fluxes. Despite the high convective forces, the biofilm composition was significantly different from the planktonic biomass, and selective enrichments of certain species were observed. Our study suggests that the microbial communities responsible for membrane biofouling in MBRs are far more complex and variable than expected and thus could be challenging to control. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is associated with premature atherosclerosis, and an increased susceptibility of plasma lipids and lipoproteins to oxidation could at least in part promote atherogenesis. The objective of this study was to identify the effects of anticardiolipin antibody (aCL) and disease activity on oxidative and antioxidative status in patients with SLE. In this study, patients in SLE/aCL+ group and in SLE disease activity index >3 group had significantly higher thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels, titers of autoantibodies against oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), and glutathione peroxidase activity than that of healthy controls. However, only TBARS and titers of autoantibodies against ox-LDL but not antioxidant enzyme activities were significantly different between SLE subgroups. Thus, enhanced oxidative status but not corresponding elevated antioxidative status by the presence of aCL and active disease activity make potent antioxidant therapy valuable for these SLE patients in preventing oxidative damage. The article focuses on a national survey of juvenile correctional institutions in Taiwan. In the past decade or so, rapid social change in Taiwan has made juvenile delinquency a more complicated issue. Limited budgetary allocation restricted the operational capacity of juvenile correctional institutions. The first two juvenile correctional schools were established in July 1999, based on recommendations from researchers and scholars. The rehabilitation or reform model focuses on reforming the criminal. The community model is new in corrections. The base of this model is to reintegrate the criminal back into the community.

The toggle-brace mechanism has been recognized as an effective installation configuration of viscous dampers to a stiff structural system. In this paper, a toggle-brace-damper configuration with dampers directly installed to the beam–column joints is presented. To facilitate practical applications, a procedure for determining the relationship between the displacement magnification factor and the geometry of the toggle-brace mechanism is established. Shaking table tests are conducted to investigate the seismic responses of a three-story steel model structure with and without linear viscous dampers. The installation configurations of the dampers include the toggle-brace-damper and the diagonal-brace-damper systems. The test results show that the toggle-brace system is more efficient in enhancing the seismic response control on a stiff structure. However, due to the fact that the gaps existing in the hinge connections of the toggle-brace-damper system may affect the contribution of damping ratio to the structure, special care must be taken when installing toggle-brace-damper systems in practical applications. Oil tankers carry large quantities of liquefied chemical cargoes that are flammable, explosive and/or toxic. Hence, a collision with a tanker that causes an oil spill poses a severe threat to the marine environment and human life. In order to quantify and analyze the risk factors of ship collision oil spill, this paper adopts a combination of knowledge element (KE) and dynamic Bayesian networks (DBN) to conduct an emergency scenario study based on the “scenario-response” model. Firstly, the key elements of “accident scenario state, human factors, emergency measures, and emergency goals” are selected to represent the accident. Then, the mechanism of accident evolution is analyzed according to the case, and DBN is used to build a scenario model of oil spills from tanker collisions. Finally, to verify the importance of human factors and the scientificity of emergency measures, the oil spill accident due to the collision between the two vessels known as MT “SANCHI” and MV “CF CRYSTAL” is used as an example for analysis. The accident model deduction results are in line with reality, and the research results help relevant decision makers to understand the deduction process of oil spills from tanker collisions, which is of great significance to enhance the safety of oil tanker shipping and marine environmental protection. This article presents the findings of a 13-year retrospective study on the sensitization profiles of aeroallergens among allergic rhinitis (AR) patients in China. The study included 16,664 patients from three different centers. The most common aeroallergens were house dust mites, cockroaches, mustard plants, and maple trees. Children had a higher sensitization rate than adults, and AR patients with asthma had a higher sensitization rate than AR patients without asthma. The sensitization rates of the aeroallergens changed significantly from 2009 to 2021, with different trends observed in the three centers. The study provides valuable information on prevalent aeroallergens in China and proposes a panel of five aeroallergens for the diagnosis of AR. [Extracted from the article]

Background: Although glutathione (GSH) has long been considered a master antioxidant, poor stability and bioavailability limit its application in skin protection. To overcome the challenges, Unilever R&D formulated a Glutathione Amino acid Precursors blend (named GAP) to boost GSH de novo synthesis. Objective: Determine whether GAP can boost GSH levels and provide skin protection against stressors. Methods: Normal human epidermal keratinocytes were treated with GAP, with or without stressors, namely, menadione, blue light or pollutants. Ascorbic acid was used as a benchmark. The levels of GSH, glutathione disulfide (GSSG), adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were quantified. A placebocontrolled clinical study was conducted on 21 female subjects who received product applications and subsequent UV radiation. Tape strip samples were collected from the subjects for GSH and GSSG quantification using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The UVprotective effect of GAP was investigated using ex vivo skin. Biomarkers related to DNA damage and the skin barrier were analysed using immunohistochemistry. Results: Glutathione amino acid precursors significantly increased the GSH levels and GSH/GSSG ratio in normal human epidermal keratinocytes. Menadione treatment resulted in excessive ROS production and a decline in ATP levels, which were effectively abrogated by GAP. The protective effects of GAP against menadioneinduced oxidative stress were superior to those of ascorbic acid. In addition, GAP effectively protected the cells against blue light-induced ROS production and pollutant-induced ATP depletion. Topical application of the GAP formulation significantly elevated the skin GSH/GSSG ratio in a clinical study. Ex vivo skin treated with the GAP formulation displayed a reduction in DNA damage and high levels of barrier proteins after UV exposure. Magnesium is a biocompatible and biodegradable metal, which has attracted much interest in biomedical engineering. Cast magnesium alloy shows the low strength and plasticity at ambient temperature. Microstructure, mechanical properties and degradation properties of the extrusion pressed magnesium alloy have been investigated for biomedical application in detail by optical microscopes, mechanical properties testing and corrosion testing. The magnesium alloy ingots were gained by different cooling rate. Then the ingots were extrude into bar at the same processing condition. The results show that the cooling rate of cast ingot is important factors that affect the properties of Mg alloy by dynamic recrystallisation extruding. The cooling rate of cast ingot has been successfully applied to control the microstructure, mechanical and degradation properties of the Mg alloy. Optical microscopy observation has indicated that the grain size of the dynamic recrystallisation extruding has been significantly decreased from fast cooling cast magnesium ingot, which has mainly contributed to the high tensile strength and good elongation. Fasting cooling rate of cast ingot and dynamic recrystallisation extruding has provided moderate corrosion resistance, which has opened a new window for materials design, especially for biomedical. We investigate numerically the random scattering of two-dimensional (2-D) images and the visibility enhancement via stochastic resonance both in intensity and momentum spaces. The multiple scattering destroys the direct transmission of photons, but some ballistic photons carrying the image information still penetrate the scattering media. The underlying ballistic image signals exhibit an instability and are enhanced at the expense of scattering noise under self-focusing nonlinearity, which is described as a stochastic resonance. It is found that the higher ratio of ballistic signals to scattering noise triggers a stronger instability. The effect of visibility enhancement in different scattering conditions is discussed, and the 2-D quasiparticle motion model is designed to analyze the nonlinear dynamic evolution. Objective: Although endoscopic drill has the advantages in manipulation and hemostasis, whose low efficiency and blurred vision reduce the efficacy of lumbar endoscopic unilateral laminotomy with bilateral decompression (LE-ULBD). The present study was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of full-visualized trephine/osteotome in the LE-ULBD surgery for severe lumbar stenosis. Methods: Fifty-seven severe lumbar stenosis patients who underwent LE-ULBD between January 2020 to January 2023 were enrolled, who were divided into drill and visualized trephine groups. The medical records including demographics, operative duration, intraoperative electrophysiological findings, postoperative hospital stay or hospital stay, postoperative outcomes and complications were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. Results: A total of 57 patients included 15 in drill and 42 in trephine group were enrolled in the study. There was significant difference in the pre- and postoperative visual analogue scale and Oswestry Disability Index scores in both groups (p < 0.05). The mean operative duration in the trephine group (101.05 ± 12.18 minutes) was shorter than that in the drill group (134.67 ± 9.68 minutes) (p < 0.05). There was no statistical difference between the 2 groups in electrophysiological monitoring, posthospital stays, postoperative outcomes and complications. Abnormal free-electromyography (EMG) were recorded in 2 (13.3%) and 5 patients (11.9%) in the drill and trephine group. Intraoperative somatosensory evoked potential changes occurred in 3 (20%) and 3 patients (7.1%) in the drill and trephine group and all patients recovered immediately when surgery ended. No serious complications and recurrence occurred in all the patients. Conclusion: Full-visualized trephine/osteotome has been approved to be convenient, safe and efficient in our study, which combined with translaminar inside-out technique and EMG monitoring especially free-EMG may offer a new choice in LE-ULBD surgery for lumbar stenosis patients. Midinfrared (MIR) wavelength conversion based on degenerate four-wave mixing is theoretically investigated in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) waveguides. The broadband phase mismatch is achieved in the normal group-velocity dispersion regime. The conversion bandwidth is extended to 900 nm, and conversion efficiency of up to −14 dB with a pump power of 70 mW in a 2-mm long a-Si:H rib waveguides is obtained. The main body of Hebi City is located in the transition zone between the mountain and the plain on the north bank of the Yellow River. It includes two major geomorphological units, the bedrock uplift area of the Taihang Mountain and the sedimentary area of the North China Plain. The Shinaimiao (SNM) core locates in Hebi City of China, belongs to the accumulation plain of the eastern foothills of the Taihang Mountains which is part of the North China Plain, and composed by quaternary alluvium and flood deposits in lithology. The SNM core is 126.64 m deep. Environmental magnetism and ESR dating method are used to divided the lower and middle Pleistocene, and determine the quaternary bottom boundary. OSL and radiocarbon (14C) dating methods are used for the division of the middle and upper Pleistocene, and Holocene. Quaternary stratum of SNM core is divided by multiple dating methods, which have provided the basic data for the study of urban active fault detection and environmental evolution in Hebi City and its vicinity. Patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) often develop drug resistance after treatment with enzalutamide. The goal of our study was to identify the key genes related to enzalutamide resistance in CRPC and to provide new gene targets for future research on improving the efficacy of enzalutamide. Differential expression genes (DEGs) associated with enzalutamide were obtained from the GSE151083 and GSE150807 datasets. We used R software, the DAVID database, protein–protein interaction networks, the Cytoscape program, and Gene Set Cancer Analysis for data analysis. The effect of RAD51 knockdown on prostate cancer (PCa) cell lines was demonstrated using Cell Counting Kit-8, clone formation, and transwell migration experiments. Six hub genes with prognostic values were screened (RAD51, BLM, DTL, RFC2, APOE, and EXO1), which were significantly associated with immune cell infiltration in PCa. High RAD51, BLM, EXO1, and RFC2 expression was associated with androgen receptor signaling pathway activation. Except for APOE, high expression of hub genes showed a significant negative correlation with the IC50 of Navitoclax and NPK76-II-72-1. RAD51 knockdown inhibited the proliferation and migration of PC3 and DU145 cell lines and promoted apoptosis. Additionally, 22Rv1 cell proliferation was more significantly inhibited with RAD51 knockdown than without RAD51 knockdown under enzalutamide treatment. Overall, six key genes associated with enzalutamide resistance were screened (RAD51, BLM, DTL, RFC2, APOE, and EXO1), which are potential therapeutic targets for enzalutamide-resistant PCa in the future. As the most common histological subtype of primary lung cancer, lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) causes enormous cancer deaths worldwide. Radiotherapy has been frequently used in LUAD cases, and radiosensitivity is vital for LUAD therapy. This research sought to explore the genetic factors affecting radiosensitivity in LUAD and inner mechanisms. LINC00511, miR-497-5p, and SMAD3 expression in LUAD cells were detected via qRT-PCR and western blot. CCK-8 assays, colony formation, and flow cytometry assays were employed to explore the cell viability, apoptosis, and radiosensitivity in PC-9 and A549 cells. The targeting relationship between LINC00511, miR-497-5p, and SMAD3 was verified by dual luciferase reporter assay. Furthermore, xenograft experiments were performed for the in vivo verification. In conclusion, LINC00511 was overexpressed in LUAD cells, which downregulated downstream miR-497-5p expression and mediately led to SMAD3 activation. LINC00511 downregulation suppressed cell viability while enhanced apoptosis rate in LUAD cells. Also, LINC00511 and SMAD3 were overexpressed, while miR-497-5p was downregulated in LUAD cells exposed to 4Gy irradiation treatment. Moreover, LINC00511 inhibition could block SMAD3 expression and promoted the radiosensitivity both in vitro and in vivo. These findings uncover LINC00511 knockdown promoted miR-497-5p expression and subsequently led to lower SMAD3 level, which enhanced radiosensitivity in LUAD cells. Congenital human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection is the leading cause of neurological disabilities in children worldwide, but the mechanisms underlying these disorders are far from well-defined. HCMV infection has been shown to dysregulate the Notch signaling pathway in human neural progenitor cells (NPCs). As an important downstream effector of Notch signaling, the transcriptional regulator Hairy and Enhancer of Split 1 (Hes1) is essential for governing NPC fate and fetal brain development. In the present study, we report that HCMV infection downregulates Hes1 protein levels in infected NPCs. The HCMV 72-kDa immediate-early 1 protein (IE1) is involved in Hes1 degradation by assembling a ubiquitination complex and promoting Hes1 ubiquitination as a potential E3 ubiquitin ligase, followed by proteasomal degradation of Hes1. Sp100A, an important component of PML nuclear bodies, is identified to be another target of IE1-mediated ubiquitination. A C-terminal acidic region in IE1, spanning amino acids 451 to 475, is required for IE1/Hes1 physical interaction and IE1-mediated Hes1 ubiquitination, but is dispensable for IE1/Sp100A interaction and ubiquitination. Our study suggests a novel mechanism linking downregulation of Hes1 protein to neurodevelopmental disorders caused by HCMV infection. ZnO:Al thin films with Al incorporation of 0-20 at.% were deposited through the sol-gel technique. Such a film undergoes a significant microstructure development, from columnar to granular structures and then nanorod arrays with increasing Al content. The important role of Al incorporation level in the microstructure evolution was determined using scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. At low Al level, the transition from columnar to granular grains can be attributed to the coarsening barrier resulting from the introduction of Al into the matrix. However, oriented structures of ZnO nanorod arrays are formed at a high Al level. TEM investigation reveals that a nanorod with smooth morphology at the top and rough morphology at the bottom has a single-crystalline wurtzite structure, which is the aggregation of nanoparticles of a few nanometers in size formed through the orientation attachment mechanism followed by epitaxial growth on the aggregated particles. Finally, the physical properties of the ZnO films with different degrees of Al concentration are discussed. Such detailed microstructure studies may aid the understanding of the doping effect process on the growth of a film, which is essential to altering its physical or chemical properties. As a potential material for biosensing applications, gallium nitride (GaN) films have attracted remarkable attention. In order to construct GaN biosensors, a corresponding immobilization of biolinkers is of great importance in order to render a surface bioactive. In this work, two kinds of n-alkenes with different carbon chain lengths, namely allylamine protected with trifluoroacetamide (TFAAA) and 10-aminodec-1-ene protected with trifluoroacetamide (TFAAD), were used to photochemically functionalize single crystalline GaN films. The successful linkage of both TFAAA and TFAAD to the GaN films is confirmed by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) measurement. With increased UV illumination time, the intensity of the secondary ions corresponding to the linker molecules initially increases and subsequently decreases in both cases. Based on the SIMS measurements, the maximum coverage of TFAAA is achieved after 14 h of UV illumination, while only 2 h is required in the case of TFAAD to reach the situation of a fully covered GaN surface. This finding leads to the conclusion that the reaction rate of TFAAD is significantly higher compared to TFAAA. Measurements by atomic force microscopy (AFM) indicate that the coverage of GaN films by a TFAAA layer leads to an increased surface roughness. The atomic terraces, which are clearly observable for the pristine GaN films, disappear once the surface is fully covered by a TFAAA layer. Such TFAAA layers will feature a homogeneous surface topography even for reaction times of 24 h. In contrast to this, TFAAD shows strong cross-polymerization on the surface, this is confirmed by optical microscopy. Backround: Currently, the effect of vascular dynamic bending (VDB) has not been fully considered when studying cardiovascular stents' long-term mechanical properties, as the previous studies about stent's mechanical properties mostly focus on the effect of vascular pulsation (VP). More and more clinical reports suggested that the effect of VDB have a significant impact on stent.Methods: In this paper, an explicit-implicit coupling simulation method was applied to analyze the mechanical responses of cardiovascular stents considering the effect of VDB. The effect of VP on stent mechanical properties was also studied and compared to the effect of VDB.Results: The results showed that the dynamic bending deformation occurred in stents due to the effect of VDB. The effects of VDB and VP resulted in alternating stress states of the stent, while the VDB alternate stresses effective on the stent were almost three times larger than that of the VP. The stress concentration under VDB mainly occurred in bridge struts and the maximal stress was located in the middle loops of the stent. However, the stress distributed uniformly in the stents under the effect of VP. Stent fracture occurred more frequently as a result of VDB with the predicted fracture position located in the bridging struts of the stent. These results are consistent with the reported data in clinical literatures. The stress of the vessel under VDB was higher, than that caused by VP.Conclusions: The results showed that the effect of VDB has a significant impact on the stent's stress distribution, fatigue performance and overall stress on the vessel, thus it is necessary to be considered when analyzing stent's long-term mechanical properties. Evolutionary analysis of microbes at the community level represents a new research avenue linking ecological patterns to evolutionary processes, but remains insufficiently studied. Here we report a relative evolutionary rates (rERs) analysis of microbial communities from six diverse natural environments based on 40 metagenomic samples. We show that the rERs of microbial communities are mainly shaped by environmental conditions, and the microbes inhabiting extreme habitats (acid mine drainage, saline lake and hot spring) evolve faster than those populating benign environments (surface ocean, fresh water and soil). These findings were supported by the observation of more relaxed purifying selection and potentially frequent horizontal gene transfers in communities from extreme habitats. The mechanism of high rERs was proposed as high mutation rates imposed by stressful conditions during the evolutionary processes. In this primary study, thin polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) film loaded with geniposide was first prepared and demonstrated on both physical and pharmacological aspects for its potential application on drug-eluting vascular stents. Physical parameters of geniposide-loaded thin film, such as crystal structure, molecular spectral characteristics, and release behavior in the whole process were detected. From X-Ray diffraction, the characteristic peak of crystal geniposide disappeared on geniposide-loaded PLGA film (GLPF) after it formed, which meant there was no agglomeration phenomenon, as geniposide was distributed in the form of single molecule. According to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) figure, the GLPF was more flat and uniform with better compactness. It inferred that release behavior of geniposide at the early stage (0~15 d) was in the form of free diffusion. Carrier PLGA began to degrade 15 days later, so the residual geniposide was also dissolved. Cellular pharmacological effects of geniposide on endothelial cells (ECs) and smooth muscle cells (SMCs) were also demonstrated on GLPF. 5% and 10% (w/w) geniposide-loaded PLGA (60 : 40) membrane indicated its significant effect on ECs promotion and SMCs inhibition. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) has a large (;235 kb) genome with more than 200 predicted open reading frames that exploits numerous cellular factors to facilitate its replication. A key feature of HCMV-infected cells is the emergence of a distinctive membranous cytoplasmic compartment termed the virion assembly compartment (vAC). Here, we report that host protein WD repeat domain 11 (WDR11) plays a key role in vAC formation and virion morphogenesis. We found that WDR11 was upregulated at both mRNA and protein levels during HCMV infection. At the late stage of HCMV replication, WDR11 relocated to the vAC and colocalized with markers of the trans-Golgi network (TGN) and vAC. Depletion of WDR11 hindered HCMV-induced membrane reorganization of the Golgi and TGN, altered vAC formation, and impaired HCMV secondary envelopment and virion morphogenesis. Further, motifs critical for the localization of WDR11 in TGN were identified by alanine- scanning mutagenesis. Mutation of these motifs led to WDR11 mislocation outside the TGN and loss of vAC formation. Taken together, these data indicate that host protein WDR11 is required for efficient viral replication at the stage of virion assembly, possibly by facilitating the remodeling of the endomembrane system for vAC formation and virion morphogenesis. IMPORTANCE During the late phase of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection, the endomembrane system is dramatically reorganized, resulting in the formation of a unique structure termed the virion assembly compartment (vAC), which is critical for the assembly of infectious virions. The mechanism of HCMV-induced vAC formation is still not fully understood. In this report, we identified a host factor, WDR11, that plays an important role in vAC formation. Our findings argue that WDR11 contributes to the relocation of the Golgi and trans-Golgi network to the vAC, a membrane reorganization process that appears to be required for efficient virion maturation. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) establishes a persistent/latent infection after primary infection, and the host factor(s) plays a key role in regulating HCMV infection status. The spread of reactivated HCMV via the hematogenous or neural route usually results in severe diseases in newborns and immunocompromised individuals. As the primary reservoirs in vivo, cells of myeloid lineage have been utilized extensively to study HCMV infection. However, the molecular mechanism of HCMV latency/ reactivation in neural cells is still poorly understood. We previously showed that HCMV-infected T98G cells maintain a large number of viral genomes and support HCMV reactivation from latency upon cAMP/IBMX treatment. Here, we employed an isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based proteomics to characterize cellular protein changes during HCMV latency and reactivation in T98G cells. A total of 168 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified, including 89 proteins in latency and 85 proteins in reactivation. Bioinformatics analysis showed that a few biological pathways were associated with HCMV latency or reactivation. Moreover, we validated 16 DEPs by both mRNA and protein expression profiles and further evaluated the effects of ApoE and the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway on HCMV infection. ApoE knockdown reduced HCMV loads and virus release, whereas overexpressing ApoE hampered HCMV latent infection, indicating a role in HCMV latency establishment/maintenance. Blocking the PI3K pathway by LY294002, a PI3K inhibitor, induced HCMV reactivation from latency in T98G cells. Overall, this comparative proteomics analysis delineates the cellular protein changes during HCMV latency and reactivation and provides a road map to advance our understanding of the mechanism(s) in the context of neural cells. The balance of plant (BOP) of a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system with a 2 kW stack and an electric efficiency of 40% is optimized using commercial GCTool software. The simulation results provide a detailed understanding of the optimal operating temperature, pressure and mass flow rate in all of the major BOP components, i.e., the gas distributor, the afterburner, the reformer and the heat exchanger. A series of experimental trials are performed to validate the simulation results. Overall, the results presented in this study not only indicate an appropriate set of operating conditions for the SOFC power system, but also suggest potential design improvements for several of the BOP components. The global stability on the dynamical behavior of the Leslie-Gower predator-prey system with delayed prey specific growth is analyzed by constructing the corresponding Lyapunov functional. Three different types of famous Holling's functional responses are considered in the present study. The sufficient conditions for the global stability analysis of the unique positive equilibrium point are derived accordingly. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the effect of different Holling-Type functional responses on the global stability of the Leislie-Gower predator-prey model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a new method to generate broadband cascaded four-wave mixing (FWM) products in the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide. A simulation model of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation is used to describe the cascaded FWM in the SOI waveguide, which consists of launching two strong pump waves near the zero-dispersion wavelength of the very short (just a few millimeters) SOI waveguide. The numerical results based on the split step Fourier method have demonstrated that the output cascaded FWM products represent bandwidth of more than 1000 nm (range from C-band to IR-band). We also analyze the remarkable influences of parameters of the waveguide length, the pump power, and the dispersion slope on the cascaded FWM products in the SOI waveguide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
