This article, titled "Huge Left Atrial Myxoma Obstructs the Mitral Valve and Causes Massive Pleural Effusion," discusses the case of a 57-year-old woman who experienced progressive exertional dyspnea and orthopnea. Physical examination revealed a low-pitched grade IV diastolic murmur and bilateral basal rales. Lab tests showed elevated levels of N-Terminal Pro-B-Type Natriuretic Peptide and high-sensitivity troponin-I. Imaging tests revealed a large mass in the left atrium obstructing the mitral valve and causing bilateral pleural effusion. Surgical resection successfully resolved the pleural effusion, and the patient remained symptom-free during the six-month follow-up. The article highlights the rarity of this clinical presentation and emphasizes the importance of considering differential diagnoses for transudative pleural effusion, including mitral valve obstruction by myxoma.
