Hydrogel ink formulations based on rheology additives are becoming increasingly popular as they enable 3‐dimensional (3D) printing of non‐printable but biologically relevant materials. Despite the widespread use, a generalized understanding of how these hydrogel formulations become printable is still missing, mainly due to their variety and diversity. Employing an interpretable machine learning approach allows the authors to explain the process of rendering printability through bulk rheological indices, with no bias toward the composition of formulations and the type of rheology additives. Based on an extensive library of rheological data and printability scores for 180 different formulations, 13 critical rheological measures that describe the printability of hydrogel formulations, are identified. Using advanced statistical methods, it is demonstrated that even though unique criteria to predict printability on a global scale are highly unlikely, the accretive and collaborative nature of rheological measures provides a qualitative and physically interpretable guideline for designing new printable materials. Fabrication of microchannels using 3D printing of sugars as fugitive material is explored in different fields, including microfluidics. However, establishing reproducible methods for the controlled production of sugar structures with sub‐100 μm dimensions remains a challenge. This study pioneers the processing of sugars by melt electrowriting (MEW) enabling the fabrication of structures with so far unprecedented resolution from Isomalt. Based on a systematic variation of process parameters, fibers with diameters down to 20 μm can be fabricated. The flexibility in the adjustment of fiber diameter by on‐demand alteration of MEW parameters enables generating constructs with perfusable channels within polydimethylsiloxane molds. These channels have a diameter that can be adjusted from 30 to 200 μm in a single design. Taken together, the experiments show that MEW strongly benefits from the thermal and physical stability of Isomalt, providing a robust platform for the fabrication of small‐diameter embedded microchannel systems. The mesostructure of additively manufactured nanocomposite parts can be tailored by the manipulation of process parameters to improve the properties of the final part. The effects of contributing process parameters and their interactions must be identified to be able to tune the properties of additively manufactured (3D-printed) nanocomposites based on their intended applications. Herein, we present the characterization of the effect of three major building parameters, namely layer thickness, infill percentage, and infill pattern, on mechanical and thermal properties of 3D-printed poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites. The characterization of printed parts showed that increasing layer thickness had a deteriorating effect on the mechanical properties regardless of the CNT concentration; however, the Young's modulus and tensile strength of parts were improved by increasing the CNT content in the same design of mesostructure. Moreover, the thermomechanical analysis showed that the residual thermal stresses of 3D-printed nanocomposites increased by increasing the layer thickness. Furthermore, it was shown that decreasing infill percentage resulted in a non-linear reduction of stiffness, strength, and dimensional stability. Moreover, a honeycomb-shaped infill pattern was introduced for the manufacturing of parts, which has shown more isotropic mechanical properties. The contributions of CNTs in enhancing mechanical properties of 3D-printed nanocomposites were investigated, by considering the induced reinforcing effects as well as the alteration of the crystallization behavior of PLA. Abstract This paper reports the synthesis of nanocomposite agarose hydrogels with improved bioactivity with the incorporation of anisotropic 2D nanosilicates (Laponite) to promote cell binding, growth and proliferation. Rheological measurements showed that the incorporation of nanosilicates slightly increased the gelation temperature (T gel). The use of higher nanosilicate content at the constant agarose concentration improved the mechanical properties of the gels. Due to the non-swelling nature of agarose, the addition of nanosilicates did not result in any remarkable change in the swelling properties of the agarose gels, while collapsed agarose nanofibers were observed with the incorporation of nanosilicates. EDX analysis confirmed the presence of the embedded nanosilicates in the gel matrix. The existence of physical interactions between nanosilicate and agarose was demonstrated by FTIR over the shifting of Si O stretching band to a lower frequency. In this research, sol–gel-derived nanostructured calcium magnesium silicate (merwinite)-based scaffolds were fabricated by water-based freeze casting method. The effect of cooling rate and sintering temperature on pore sizes and mechanical characteristics of the scaffolds was studied. Microstructure and surface morphology of scaffolds were also observed by scanning electron microscopy before and after various time intervals of soaking in simulated body fluid. The results showed that increasing temperature at the constant rate led to increasing the parameters of volume and linear shrinkage, strength ( σ), and Young’s modulus ( E) but decreasing porosity. This increase was significant for strength and Young’s modulus. In addition, with the increase of rate at the constant temperature, the parameters of volume and linear shrinkage and also porosity decreased whereas strength and Young’s modulus increased significantly. According to the obtained mechanical results, the best mechanical properties were achieved when the scaffold was prepared at cooling rate and sintering temperature of 277.15°K/min and 1623.15°K, respectively ( E = 0.048 GPa and σ = 2 MPa). These values were closer to the lower limit of the values for cancellous bone. The acellular in vitro bioactivity revealed that different apatite morphologies were formed on the surfaces for various periods of soaking time when the scaffolds prepared at the freezing temperature of 277.15°K/min and at the two different sintering temperatures. The favorable mechanical behavior of the porous constructs, coupled with the ability of forming apatite particles on the surface of scaffold, indicates the potential of the present freeze casting route for the production of porous scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. In 3D bioprinting for cartilage regeneration, bioinks that support chondrogenic development are of key importance. Growth factors covalently bound in non-printable hydrogels have been shown to effectively promote chondrogenesis. However, studies that investigate the functionality of tethered growth factors within 3D printable bioinks are still lacking. Therefore, in this study, we established a dual-stage crosslinked hyaluronic acid-based bioink that enabled covalent tethering of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1). Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) were cultured over three weeks in vitro, and chondrogenic differentiation of MSCs within bioink constructs with tethered TGF-β1 was markedly enhanced, as compared to constructs with non-covalently incorporated TGF-β1. This was substantiated with regard to early TGF-β1 signaling, chondrogenic gene expression, qualitative and quantitative ECM deposition and distribution, and resulting construct stiffness. Furthermore, it was successfully demonstrated, in a comparative analysis of cast and printed bioinks, that covalently tethered TGF-β1 maintained its functionality after 3D printing. Taken together, the presented ink composition enabled the generation of high-quality cartilaginous tissues without the need for continuous exogenous growth factor supply and, thus, bears great potential for future investigation towards cartilage regeneration. In the current study, a sol-gel-synthesized tricalcium magnesium silicate powder was coated on Ti-6Al-4V alloys using plasma spray method. Composition of feed powder was evaluated by X-ray diffraction technique before and after the coating process. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to study the morphology of coated substrates. The corrosion behaviors of bare and coated Ti-6Al-4V alloys were examined using potentiodynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in stimulated body fluids. Moreover, bare and coated Ti-6Al-4V alloys were characterized in vitro by culturing osteoblast and mesenchymal stem cells for several days. Results demonstrated a meaningful improvement in the corrosion resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloys coated with tricalcium magnesium silicate compared with the bare counterparts, by showing a decrease in corrosion current density from 1.84 μA/cm2 to 0.31 μA/cm2. Furthermore, the coating substantially improved the bioactivity of Ti-6Al-4Valloys. Our study on corrosion behavior and biological response of Ti-6Al-4V alloy coated by tricalcium magnesium silicate proved that the coating has considerably enhanced safety and applicability of Ti-6Al-4V alloys, suggesting its potential use in permanent implants and artificial joints. Biofabrication, including printing technologies, has emerged as a powerful approach to the design of disease models, such as in cancer research. In breast cancer, adipose tissue has been acknowledged as an important part of the tumor microenvironment favoring tumor progression. Therefore, in this study, a 3D-printed breast cancer model for facilitating investigations into cancer cell-adipocyte interaction was developed. First, we focused on the printability of human adipose-derived stromal cell (ASC) spheroids in an extrusion-based bioprinting setup and the adipogenic differentiation within printed spheroids into adipose microtissues. The printing process was optimized in terms of spheroid viability and homogeneous spheroid distribution in a hyaluronic acid-based bioink. Adipogenic differentiation after printing was demonstrated by lipid accumulation, expression of adipogenic marker genes, and an adipogenic ECM profile. Subsequently, a breast cancer cell (MDA-MB-231) compartment was printed onto the adipose tissue constructs. After nine days of co-culture, we observed a cancer cell-induced reduction of the lipid content and a remodeling of the ECM within the adipose tissues, with increased fibronectin, collagen I and collagen VI expression. Together, our data demonstrate that 3D-printed breast cancer-adipose tissue models can recapitulate important aspects of the complex cell–cell and cell–matrix interplay within the tumor-stroma microenvironment.
