While macroinvertebrate dispersal operates at the individual level, predictions of their dispersal capabilities often rely on indirect proxies rather than direct measurements. To gain insight into the dispersal of individual specimens, it is crucial to mark (label) and capture individuals. Isotopic enrichment with 15N is a non‐invasive method with the potential of labelling large quantities of macroinvertebrates. While the analysis of 15N is widely utilised in food web studies, knowledge on the specific utility of isotopic enrichment with 15N for mass labelling of macroinvertebrate individuals across different taxa and feeding types is limited. Previous studies have focused on single species and feeding types, leaving gaps in our understanding of the broader applicability of this method. Therefore, this study aimed to test and compare isotopic mass enrichment across several macroinvertebrate taxa and feeding types. We released 15NH4Cl at five stream reaches in North‐Rhine Westphalia, Germany, and successfully enriched 12 distinct macroinvertebrate taxa (Crustacea and Insecta). Significant enrichment was achieved in active and passive filter feeders, grazers, shredders and predators, and predominantly showed positive correlations with the enrichment of the taxa's main food sources phytobenthos and particulate organic matter. Enrichment levels rose rapidly and peaked at distances between 50 m and 300 m downstream of the isotopic inlet; significant enrichment occurred up to 2000 m downstream of the isotopic inlet in all feeding types. Macroinvertebrate density estimates on the stream bottom averaged to a total of approximately 3.4 million labelled individuals of the 12 investigated taxa, thus showing the high potential of isotopic (15N) enrichment as a non‐invasive method applicable for mass labelling across different macroinvertebrate feeding types. Recent findings indicate a dramatic decline of parasites with complex life cycles in the past decades. Anthropogenic stressors such as global warming, habitat alteration, and pollution could be major drivers of this species loss or shifting host–parasite dynamics. Parasites are sensitive indicators of stressor effects. Anthropogenic stressors are causing fundamental changes in aquatic habitats and to the organisms inhabiting these ecosystems. Yet, we are still far from understanding the diverse responses of parasites and their hosts to these environmental stressors and predicting how these stressors will affect host–parasite communities. Here, we provide an overview of the impacts of major stressors affecting aquatic ecosystems in the Anthropocene (habitat alteration, global warming, and pollution) and highlight their consequences for aquatic parasites at multiple levels of organisation, from the individual to the community level. Stable isotope analysis of individual compounds is emerging as a powerful tool to study nutrient origin and conversion in host-parasite systems. We measured the carbon isotope composition of amino acids and glucose in the cestode Schistocephalus solidus and in liver and muscle tissues of its second intermediate host, the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), over the course of 90 days in a controlled infection experiment. Similar linear regressions of δ13C values over time and low trophic fractionation of essential amino acids indicate that the parasite assimilates nutrients from sources closely connected to the liver metabolism of its host. Biosynthesis of glucose in the parasite might occur from the glucogenic precursors alanine, asparagine and glutamine and with an isotope fractionation of − 2 to – 3 ‰ from enzymatic reactions, while trophic fractionation of glycine, serine and threonine could be interpreted as extensive nutrient conversion to fuel parasitic growth through one-carbon metabolism. Trophic fractionation of amino acids between sticklebacks and their diets was slightly increased in infected compared to uninfected individuals, which could be caused by increased (immune-) metabolic activities due to parasitic infection. Interpretation of stable isotope data is of upmost importance in ecology to build sound models for the study of animal diets, migration patterns and physiology. However, our understanding of stable isotope fractionation and incorporation into consumer tissues is still limited. We therefore measured the δ13C values of individual amino acids over time from muscle and liver tissue of three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) on a high protein diet. The δ13C values of amino acids in the liver quickly responded to small shifts of under ± 2.0‰ in dietary stable isotope compositions on 30-day intervals. We found on average no trophic fractionation in pooled essential (muscle, liver) and non-essential (muscle) amino acids. Negative Δδ13C values of − 0.7 ± 1.3‰ were observed for pooled non-essential (liver) amino acids and might indicate biosynthesis from small amounts of dietary lipids. Trophic fractionation of individual amino acids is reported and discussed, including unusual Δδ13C values of over + 4.9 ± 1.4‰ for histidine. Arginine and lysine showed the lowest trophic fractionation on individual sampling days and might be useful proxies for dietary sources on short time scales. Parasitism is commonly recognised as a consumer strategy, although, the interaction of parasites in communities and ecosystems are generally poorly understood. As parasites are integral parts of food webs, analysis of the trophic interactions between parasites and hosts was assessed through comparison of stable isotope ratios of carbon (13C/12C) and nitrogen (15N/14N). Largemouth yellowfish (Labeobarbus kimberleyensis) infected with the Asian tapeworm (Schyzocotyle acheilognathi) were collected from the Vaal Dam. Signatures of δ13C and δ15N were assessed in host muscle and liver tissue, and cestodes using an elemental analyser coupled with an isotope ratio-mass spectrometer (EA-IRMS). Hosts were enriched by 4.1‰ in the heavy nitrogen isotope with respect to the S. acheilognathi and therefore occupy a higher trophic position than the parasite. Comparison of δ13C indicates that dietary sources of carbon in cestodes are derived from the host liver. Comparison of stable isotope signatures between Paradiplozoon ichthyoxanthon (another common parasite of the Largemouth yellowfish in the Vaal River) and S. acheilognathi showed that the monogenean was enriched by 5.3‰ in 15N which accounts for a difference of almost two trophic positions. Isotope differences in the host–parasite system considered indicate that differences can be related to the mode of nutrient acquisition employed by host and parasites. Cestodes, being depleted in both 13C and 15N relative to the host and monogenean (P. ichthyoxanthon), indicate that S. acheilognathi assimilates nutrients derived from the host metabolism which are released from the liver. Historically, the European Atlantic is probably the most important oil-spill hotspot worldwide. One of the most recent accidents occurred in 2002 when the oil-tanker Prestige sank over the Galician Bank causing two major oil-spills followed by several small leaks until March 2003. This resulted in contamination of virtually all types of marine habitat. Considering that parasites have proved to be good effect and accumulation bioindicators, the present study addresses the medium-term changes in trace element content after the Prestige oil-spill in a model host-parasite system, the bogue, Boops boops (Sparidae) and the isopod Ceratothoa oestroides. To our knowledge, this study is the first to address trace element concentrations in natural fish and parasite populations associated with the effects of an oil-spill. We observed that both test organisms examined, the host and the parasite, indicate a detectable change in the relative composition of trace element concentrations before and after the Prestige oil-spill. Multivariate analyses also indicated a differential response of the different tissues to the temporal sampling sequence. However, analyses of both host and parasite tissues supported the pattern of a gradual temporal transition to a state of relative trace element content distinctly departing from the pre-spill situation. Moreover, the parasite-host element accumulation ratios better depicted this temporal pattern. Additionally, changes in V concentrations in fish liver tissues and Ni concentrations in the parasite tissues suggest that this host-parasite system may be a useful tool to assess these two element contaminations linked to heavy fuel oil-spill. Background: Stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen can deliver insights into trophic interactions between organisms. While many studies on free-living organisms are available, the number of those focusing on trophic interactions between hosts and their associated parasites still remains scarce. In some cases information about taxa (e.g. acanthocephalans) is completely missing. Additionally, available data revealed different and occasionally contrasting patterns, depending on the parasite's taxonomic position and its degree of development, which is most probably determined by its feeding strategy (absorption of nutrients through the tegument versus active feeding) and its localization in the host. Methods: Using stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen we provided first data on the trophic position of an acanthocephalan species with respect to its fish host. Barbels (Barbus barbus) infected only with adult acanthocephalans Pomphorhynchus laevis as well as fish co-infected with the larval (L4) nematodes Eustrongylides sp. from host body cavity were investigated in order to determine the factors shaping host-parasite trophic interactions. Fish were collected in different seasons, to study also potential isotopic shifts over time, whereas barbels with single infection were obtained in summer and co-infected ones in autumn. Results: Acanthocephalans as absorptive feeders showed lower isotope discrimination values of δ15N than the fish host. Results obtained for the acanthocephalans were in line with other parasitic taxa (e.g. cestodes), which exhibit a similar feeding strategy. We assumed that they feed mainly on metabolites, which were reprocessed by the host and are therefore isotopically lighter. In contrast, the nematodes were enriched in the heavier isotope δ15N with respect to their host and the acanthocephalans, respectively. As active feeders they feed on tissues and blood in the body cavity of the host and thus showed isotope discrimination patterns resembling those of predators. We also observed seasonal differences in the isotope signatures of fish tissues and acanthocephalans, which were attributed to changes in food composition of the host and to seasonality in the transmission and development of acanthocephalans. Conclusions: This study provided first data on trophic interaction between an acanthocephalan species and its associated host, which support the tendency already described for other taxa with similar nutrition strategy (e.g. cestodes). Actively feeding taxa such as larval Eustrongylides sp., appear to act like predators as it can be seen from their isotope discrimination values. Environmental parasitology deals with the interactions between parasites and pollutants in the environment. Their sensitivity to pollutants and environmental disturbances makes many parasite taxa useful indicators of environmental health and anthropogenic impact. Over the last 20 years, three main research directions have been shown to be highly promising and relevant, namely parasites as accumulation indicators for selected pollutants, parasites as effect indicators, and the role of parasites interacting with established bioindicators. The current paper focuses on the potential use of parasites as indicators of environmental pollution and the interactions with their hosts. By reviewing some of the most recent findings in the field of environmental parasitology, we summarize the current state of the art and try to identify promising ideas for future research directions. In detail, we address the suitability of parasites as accumulation indicators and their possible application to demonstrate biological availability of pollutants; the role of parasites as pollutant sinks; the interaction between parasites and biomarkers focusing on combined effects of parasitism and pollution on the health of their hosts; and the use of parasites as indicators of contaminants and ecosystem health. Because of different reported effects of parasitism on the accumulation of metals in fish, it is important to consider parasites while interpreting bioaccumulation data from biomonitoring programmes. Accordingly, the first step is to take parasitism into consideration when simulating metal bioaccumulation in the fish host under laboratory conditions. In the present study, the accumulation of metals in fish-parasite systems was simulated by a one-compartment toxicokinetic model and compared to uninfected conspecifics. As such, metal accumulation in fish was assumed to result from a balance of different uptake and loss processes depending on the infection status. The uptake by parasites was considered an efflux from the fish host, similar to elimination. Physiological rate constants for the uninfected fish were parameterised based on the covalent index and the species weight while the parameterisation for the infected fish was carried out based on the reported effects of parasites on the uptake kinetics of the fish host. The model was then validated for the system of the chub Squalius cephalus and the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus tereticollis following 36-day exposure to waterborne Pb. The dissolved concentration of Pb in the exposure tank water fluctuated during the exposure, ranging from 40 to 120 μg/L. Generally, the present study shows that the one-compartment model can be an effective method for simulating the accumulation of metals in fish, taking into account effects of parasitism. In particular, the predicted concentrations of Cu, Fe, Zn, and Pb in the uninfected chub as well as in the infected chub and the acanthocephalans were within one order of magnitude of the measurements. The variation in the absorption efficiency and the elimination rate constant of the uninfected chub resulted in variations of about one order of magnitude in the predicted concentrations of Pb. Inclusion of further assumptions for simulating metal accumulation in the infected chub led to variations of around two orders of magnitude in the predictions. Parasites can be used as effective monitoring tools in environmental impact studies as they are able to accumulate certain pollutants (e.g. metals) at levels much higher than those of their ambient environment and of free-living sentinels. Thus, they provide valuable information not only about the chemical conditions of their and their hosts' environment but also deliver insights into the biological availability of allochthonous substances. While a large number of different freshwater parasites (mainly acanthocephalans and cestodes) were investigated in terms of pollutant bioaccumulation, studies based on marine host–parasites systems remain scarce. However, available data show that different marine parasite taxa such as nematodes, cestodes and acanthocephalans exhibit also an excellent metal accumulation capacity. The biological availability of metals and their uptake routes in marine biota and parasites differ from those of freshwater organisms. We assume that a large part of metals and other pollutants are also taken up via the digestive system of the host. Therefore, in addition to environmental conditions the physiology of the host also plays an important role for the accumulation process. Additionally, we highlight some advantages in using parasites as accumulation indicators in marine ecosystems. As parasites occur ubiquitously in marine food webs, the monitoring of metals in their tissues can deliver information about the spatial and trophic distribution of pollutants. Accordingly, parasites as indicators offer an ecological assessment on a broader scale, in contrast to established free-living marine indicators, which are mostly benthic invertebrates and therefore limited in habitat distribution. Background: A large number of studies demonstrated that acanthocephalans exhibit a high metal accumulation potential and thus can be used as sensitive accumulation indicators. However, similar to free-living bioindicators, a seasonal variation in metal concentrations in parasites might occur. Accordingly, the influence of seasonality has to be elucidated if parasites should be applied as sentinels. Methods: In order to assess a possible seasonal profile of element concentrations, the concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, V and Zn in the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis and in its host barbel (Barbus barbus) were analysed in a seasonal manner (spring, summer and autumn) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results: Five elements (As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) were detected in significantly higher concentrations in the parasites compared to host muscle, intestine and liver. Their levels in P. laevis showed a clear seasonal pattern, while the concentrations in the fish tissues remained similar during the year. The highest concentrations in the parasites were found in autumn, followed by spring and summer. Evidence from the literature suggests that this profile coincides with the seasonality of acanthocephalan transmission, as their annual concentration profile reflected the mean individual weight pattern during the year. Parasite infrapopulations in autumn consisted mainly of young worms which are characterised by an accelerated metabolism and a higher surface to volume ratio resulting in higher element concentrations when compared to older worms which are assumed to slow down their metabolism and additionally excrete metals with their eggs. Conclusions: Based on the available data from the present study and literature, a model is suggested, which visualises the accumulation kinetic of several elements under natural conditions. Background: Metal uptake and accumulation in fish parasites largely depends on the parasite group with acanthocephalans showing the highest accumulation rates. Additionally, developmental stage (larvae or adult) as well as parasite location in the host are suggested to be decisive factors for metal bioconcentration in parasites. By using barbel (Barbus barbus) simultaneously infected with nematode larvae in the body cavity and adult acanthocephalans in the intestine, the relative importance of all of these factors was compared in the same host. Methods: Eleven elements Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Cobalt (Co), Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Lead (Pb), Selenium (Se), Tin (Sn), Vanadium (V) and Zinc (Zn) were analyzed in barbel tissues (muscle, intestine, liver) as well as in their acanthocephalan parasites Pomphorhynchus laevis and the larval nematode Eustrongylides sp. (L4) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results: Nine elements were detected in significantly higher levels in the parasites compared to host tissues. The element composition among parasites was found to be strongly dependent on parasite taxa/developmental stage and localization within the host. Intestinal acanthocephalans accumulated mainly toxic elements (As, Cd, Pb), whereas the intraperitoneal nematodes bioconcentrated essential elements (Co, Cu, Fe, Se, Zn). Conclusion: Our results suggest that in addition to acanthocephalans, nematodes such as Eustrongylides sp. can also be applied as bioindicators for metal pollution. Using both parasite taxa simultaneously levels of a wide variety of elements (essential and non essential) can easily be obtained. Rationale: The analysis of nitrogen isotopes in aqueous dissolved nitrate is an effective method for identifying pollution sources and offers the potential to study the nitrogen cycle. However, the measurement of nitrogen isotope ratios of nitrate still requires extensive sample preparation or derivatization. Methods: In this study, a modified commercially available liquid chromatography–isotope ratio mass spectrometer (LC‐IRMS) interface is presented that enables automated measurement of δ15N signatures from nitrate by online reduction of nitrate in two consecutive steps. First, vanadium(III) chloride is used as a reducing agent to convert NO3− to NxOy under acidic conditions. The mix of nitrogen oxides is then transferred into a stream of helium and reduced to nitrogen (N2) analysis gas via a hot copper reactor. Prior to the online conversion of aqueous nitrate into elemental nitrogen, the sample was chromatographically separated from potential matrix effects on a PGC column. Results: Precision was achieved at a level below 1.4‰ by injecting 10 μL of 50 mg L−1 N, using five different nitrate standards and reference materials. These materials spanned a range of more than 180‰ in δ15N. To demonstrate the applicability of the method, we measured water samples from an enrichment experiment, where isotopically enriched ammonium chloride was administered into a small river over the course of 2 weeks. In contrary to our expectation, the δ15N values of river nitrate showed values between +0.4 ± 0.4‰ and +4.1 ± 0.3‰, varying over a small range of 3.7‰. Conclusions: Our study showed that the measurement of nitrate nitrogen isotope ratios with a modified LC‐IRMS system is possible but that further modifications and improvements would be necessary for a robust and user‐friendly instrument. Nanocomposites have been widely applied in medical device fabrication and tissue-engineering applications. In this context, the release of metal ions as well as protein adsorption capacity are hypothesized to be two key processes directing nanocomposite-cell interactions. The objective of this study is to understand the polymer-matrix effects on ion release kinetics and their relations with protein adsorption. Laser ablation in macromolecule solutions was employed for synthesizing Au and Fe nanoparticle-loaded nanocomposites based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and alginate. Confocal microscopy revealed a three-dimensional homogeneous dispersion of laser-generated nanoparticles in the polymer. The physicochemical properties revealed a pronounced dependence upon embedding of Fe and Au nanoparticles in both polymer matrices. Interestingly, the total Fe ion concentration released from alginate gels under static conditions decreased with increasing mass loadings, a phenomenon only found in the Fe-alginate system and not in the Cu/Zn-alginate and Fe-TPU control system (where the effects were proportioonal to the nanoparticle load). A detailed mechanistic examination of iron the ion release process revealed that it is probably not the redox potential of metals and diffusion of metal ions alone, but also the solubility of nano-metal oxides and affinity of metal ions for alginate that lead to the special release behaviors of iron ions from alginate gels. The amount of adsorbed bovine serum albumin (BSA) and collagen I on the surface of both the alginate and TPU composites was significantly increased in contrast to the unloaded control polymers and could be correlated with the concentration of released Fe ions and the porosity of composites, but was independent of the global surface charge. Interestingly, these effects were already highly pronounced at minute loadings with Fe nanoparticles down to 200 ppm. Moreover, the laser-generated Fe or Au nanoparticle-loaded alginate composites were shown to be a suitable bioink for 3D printing. Due to the increasing consumption of platinum (Pt), especially in automobile exhaust catalysts, environmental concentrations of Pt are of emerging concern worldwide. Limited information exists on environmental concentrations, particularly in Pt mining regions, while South Africa is the world's main supplier of Pt. Moreover, other metals are also released as by-products of Pt mining, which might also cause environmental concern. Certain fish parasite taxa have the ability to accumulate metals orders of magnitude higher than their hosts and can be used to reliably detect metals with naturally low abundance. Studies on Pt accumulation in parasite-host systems are limited. Therefore, the aims of the present study were (1) to determine the accumulation of a variety of metals (cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), platinum (Pt), and zinc (Zn)) in helminth fish parasites compared with their hosts from a reference site and an impoundment impacted by Pt mining activities; (2) to assess whether there is a difference between bioaccumulation of metals in infected and uninfected hosts, as well as between hosts with different infection intensities; and (3) to compare the biomarker responses (acetylcholine esterase activity (AChE), metallothionein content (MT), catalase activity (CAT), reduced glutathione content (GSH), malondialdehyde content (MDA), protein carbonyls induction (PC), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), and cellular energy allocation (CEA)) between infected and uninfected hosts. The cestode Atractolytocestus huronensis accumulated significantly higher concentrations of Cr, Ni, and Pt than their host Cyprinus carpio, while the nematode Contracaecum sp. accumulated significantly higher concentrations of Pt and Zn than their host Clarias gariepinus. Infected fish showed lower metal concentrations compared to uninfected fish, while the parasites had no significant effects on their hosts' biomarker responses. The parasites demonstrated the bioavailability of metals derived from Pt mining activities and their ability to resist its toxic effects. Wild animals are usually infected with parasites that can alter their hosts' trophic niches in food webs as can be seen from stable isotope analyses of infected versus uninfected individuals. The mechanisms influencing these effects of parasites on host isotopic values are not fully understood. Here, we develop a conceptual model to describe how the alteration of the resource intake or the internal resource use of hosts by parasites can lead to differences of trophic and isotopic niches of infected versus uninfected individuals and ultimately alter resource flows through food webs. We therefore highlight that stable isotope studies inferring trophic positions of wild organisms in food webs would benefit from routine identification of their infection status. A conceptual framework was developed to describe how parasite infections alter the resource intake and use of hosts, which could likely be reflected in the isotopic values of host tissues. Trophic and isotopic niches of infected and uninfected individuals may thus differ. The literature on stable isotope analyses in host–parasite systems is very limited, particularly when comparing infected and uninfected individuals. Experimental feeding studies comparing infected and uninfected individuals are necessary to separate parasite effects on resource intake from those on internal resource use. Compound-specific isotope analysis of individual amino acids (AAs) is a promising method for characterizing resource flow and transformation in aquatic systems, encompassing microbial domains to macroscopic consumers. This review delves into two key areas of research concerning AAs in aquatic ecosystems. Firstly, carbon isotope analysis is employed to explore carbon sources assimilated for AAs synthesis, and secondly, nitrogen isotope analysis is used to clarify ecosystem baselines and trophic dynamics of organisms. Surprisingly, literature provides limited discussions on the limitations or critical challenges faced during AAs isotope analysis over the past decade. To address this gap, this review focuses on challenges encountered in method development, sample preparation, and technical aspects, including instrumental design, and δ13C and δ15N analysis of AAs. Recommendations are provided to increase the accuracy and reliability. The review also highlights the significance of comprehensive understanding and detailed methodology to address challenges during AA isotope analysis in aquatic systems. We present a novel and facile method for the design of biocompatible microgel-modified microfibers loaded with ZnO nanoparticles capable of zinc ion release under physiological conditions. The microfibers consist of three materials hierarchically assembled in a controlled and reproducible way. We synthesized poly( N -vinylcaprolactam-co-itaconic acid) aqueous microgels with carboxylic groups located in the microgel core. The obtained microgels can be loaded with various amounts of ZnO nanoparticles by in-situ growth of ZnO in microgels. As shown by electrophoretic mobility and TEM measurements, ZnO nanoparticles are selectively loaded in the microgel core and stabilized by itaconic acid groups bearing strong negative charges. ZnO-loaded microgels were used as functional additive to produce poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) microfibers using the electrospinning process. The resulting microfibers consist of a PCL core coated with the microgels located at the surface of the fibers. The variation of the ZnO amount loaded into microgels allows regulating the ZnO content in microfibers and gives the possibility to tune the released amount of zinc ions in aqueous medium at pH 7.5 and 37 °C. We demonstrate that the obtained functional microfibers are biocompatible and non-toxic, thus being good candidates for biomedical applications like scaffolds for tissue engineering, biointerface coatings or wound closing dressings. The liver fluke Fasciola gigantica is a trematode parasite of ruminants and humans that occurs naturally in Africa and Asia. Cases of human fascioliasis, attributable at least in part to F. gigantica, are significantly increasing in the last decades. The introduced snail species Galba truncatula was already identified to be an important intermediate host for this parasite and the efficient invader Pseudosuccinea columella is another suspect in this case. Therefore, we investigated snails collected in irrigation canals in Fayoum governorate in Egypt for prevalence of trematodes with focus on P. columella and its role for the transmission of F. gigantica. Species were identified morphologically and by partial sequencing of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene (COI). Among all 689 snails found at the 21 sampling sites, P. columella was the most abundant snail with 296 individuals (42.96%) and it was also the most dominant species at 10 sites. It was not found at 8 sites. Molecular detection by PCR and sequencing of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) revealed infections with F. gigantica (3.38%), Echinostoma caproni (2.36%) and another echinostome (7.09%) that could not be identified further according to its sequence. No dependency of snail size and trematode infection was found. Both high abundance of P. columella in the Fayoum irrigation system and common infection with F. gigantica might be a case of parasite spill-back (increased prevalence in local final hosts due to highly susceptible introduced intermediate host species) from the introduced P. columella to the human population, explaining at least partly the observed increase of reported fascioliasis-cases in Egypt. Eichhornia crassipes, the invasive water hyacinth, which covers huge areas of the irrigation canals, offers safe refuges for the amphibious P. columella during molluscicide application. Powder bed fusion of metals using a laser beam (PBF-LB/M) is a widely used additive manufacturing (AM) technique that enables the material-efficient fabrication of complex geometries in metallic parts. However, achieving high-quality parts with desired properties heavily depends on variances in the manufacturing process and powder composition, making quality control an indispensable aspect of almost all applications. Today, mainly grayscale imaging, photodiodes, or pyrometry are employed, whereas in-situ recording of chemical (compositional) information has rarely been done during PBF-LB/M. This pilot study uses Nd-Fe-B as a compositional sensitive model material to explore the feasibility of in-situ optical emission spectroscopy (OES) for elemental analysis of metallic samples during PBF-LB/M, validated by ex-situ analysis. Our results show that the Boltzmann-corrected local emissivity of the Fe and Nd lines in the plume is a reliable indicator for determining the temperature and elemental material concentration voxel-wise, which could enable a digital 3-D reconstruction of the material composition of a printed part in the future. A toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic model based on subcellular metal partitioning is presented for simulating chronic toxicity of copper (Cu) from the estimated concentration in the fraction of potentially toxic metal (PTM). As such, the model allows for considering the significance of different pathways of metal sequestration in predicting metal toxicity. In the metabolically available pool (MAP), excess metals above the metabolic requirements and the detoxification and elimination capacity form the PTM fraction. The reversibly and irreversibly detoxified fractions were distinguished in the biologically detoxified compartment, while responses of organisms were related to Cu accumulation in the PTM fraction. The model was calibrated using the data on Cu concentrations in subcellular fractions and physiological responses measured by the glutathione S-transferase activity and the lipid peroxidation level during 24-day exposure of the Zebra mussel to Cu at concentrations of 25 and 50 µg/L and varying Na+ concentrations up to 4.0 mmol/L. The model was capable of explaining dynamics in the subcellular Cu partitioning, e.g. the trade-off between elimination and detoxification as well as the dependence of net accumulation, elimination, detoxification, and metabolism on the exposure level. Increases in the net accumulation rate in the MAP contributed to increased concentrations of Cu in this fraction. The stenohaline zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha , is uniquely sensitive to the ionic composition of its aquatic environment. Waterborne copper (Cu) uptake and accumulation in zebra mussels were examined at various conditions in an environmentally relevant range in freshwater, i.e. Cu exposure levels (nominal concentrations of 25 and 50 μg/L), pH (5.8–8.3), and sodium (Na+) concentrations (up to 4.0 mM). Copper accumulation was simulated by a kinetic model covering two compartments, the gills and the remaining tissues. The Cu uptake rate constant decreased with decreasing pH from 8.3 down to 6.5, indicating interactions between H+ and Cu at uptake sites. The kinetic simulation showed dose-dependent effects of Na+ on Cu uptake. At 25 μg/L Cu, addition of Na+ at 0.5 mM significantly inhibited the Cu uptake rate, while no significant differences were found in the uptake rate upon further addition of Na+ up to a concentration of 4.0 mM. At 50 μg/L Cu, the Cu uptake rate was not influenced by Na+ addition. Calibration results exhibited dose-dependent elimination rates with more profound elimination with increasing exposure levels. With kinetic parameters calibrated at environmentally relevant conditions, in terms of pH and Na+ concentrations, the model performed well in predicting Cu accumulation based on independent data sets. Estimates of the Cu concentration in mussels were within a factor of 2 of the measurements. This demonstrates potential application of kinetic models that are calibrated in environmentally relevant freshwater conditions. Intraspecific diet specialization, usually driven by resource availability, competition and predation, is common in natural populations. However, the role of parasites on diet specialization of their hosts has rarely been studied. Eye flukes can impair vision ability of their hosts and have been associated with alterations of fish feeding behavior. Here it was assessed whether European perch (Perca fluviatilis) alter their diet composition as a consequence of infection with eye flukes. Young-of-the-year (YOY) perch from temperate Lake Müggelsee (Berlin, Germany) were sampled in two years, eye flukes counted and fish diet was evaluated using both stomach content and stable isotope analyses. Perch diet was dominated by zooplankton and benthic macroinvertebrates. Both methods indicated that with increasing eye fluke infection intensity fish had a more selective diet, feeding mainly on the benthic macroinvertebrate Dikerogammarus villosus, while less intensively infected fish appeared to be generalist feeders showing no preference for any particular prey type. Our results show that infection with eye flukes can indirectly affect interaction of the host with lower trophic levels by altering the diet composition and highlight the underestimated role of parasites in food web studies. • Cadmium alters the expression of olfactory sensory neuron marker genes in the olfactory epithelium. • Cadmium induces expression of antioxidant genes in both the olfactory epithelium and bulb. • Cadmium impairs the olfactory-mediated antipredator response of zebrafish. Fish strongly rely on olfaction as a variety of essential behaviors such as foraging and predator avoidance are mediated by the olfactory system. Cadmium (Cd) is known to impair olfaction and accumulate in the olfactory epithelium (OE) and bulb (OB) of fishes. In the present study, the acute toxicity of Cd on olfaction in zebrafish (Danio rerio) was characterized on the molecular and behavioral level. To this end, quantitative real-time PCR was performed in order to analyze the expression of selected genes in both the OE and OB. Moreover, the response of zebrafish to an alarm cue was investigated. Following 24 h of exposure to Cd, the expression of genes associated with olfactory sensory neurons was reduced in the OE. Furthermore, the antioxidant genes peroxiredoxin 1 (prdx1) and heme oxygenase 1 (hmox1), as well as the metallothionein 2 gene (mt2) were upregulated in the OE, whereas hmox1 and the stress-inducible heat shock protein 70 gene (hsp70) were upregulated in the OB upon exposure to Cd. Following stimulation with a conspecific skin extract, zebrafish displayed a considerable disruption of the antipredator behavior with increasing Cd concentration. Taken together, Cd impaired olfaction in zebrafish, thereby disrupting the antipredator response, which is crucial for the survival of individuals. A new method is proposed for producing nanoparticle-metal composite powders for laser additive manufacturing of oxide-dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloys. Different composite powders containing laser-generated Y 2 O 3 and yttrium iron garnet (YIG) nanoparticles were produced and consolidated by Laser Metal Deposition (LMD). The structural properties of the manufactured ODS alloys were analyzed, and their hardness, remnant porosity, and temperature-dependent compression behavior were characterized to study the effect of the composition and size of the nanoparticles on the structural and mechanical properties. While the structural analyses did not show significant differences between the processed samples within the limits of the characterization methods that were used, the temperature-dependent compression behavior showed an increase of up to 22 ± 11% in the high-temperature strength of the specimens that contained only 0.08 wt% of laser-generated nanoparticles. Many well-established methods for studying the degradation of brominated flame retardants are not useful when working with polymeric and water insoluble species. An example for this specific class of flame retardants is PolyFR (polymeric flame retardant; CAS No 1195978−93−8), which is used as a substituent for hexabromocyclododecane. Although it has been on the market for two years now, almost no information is available about its long time behavior in the environment. Within this study, we focus on how to determine a possible degradation of both pure PolyFR as well as PolyFR in the final insulation product, expanded polystyrene foam. Therefore, we chose UV radiation followed by analyses of the total bromine content at different time points via ICP-MS and identified possible degradation products such as 2,4,6-tribromophenol through LC-MS. These results were then linked with measurements of the adsorbable organically bound bromine and total organic carbon in order to estimate their concentrations. With respect to the obtained [sup 1]H NMR, GPC, and contact angle results, the possibility for further degradation was discussed, as UV irradiation can influence the decomposition of molecules in combination with other environmental factors like biodegradation. Physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models have been applied to simulate the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination of various toxicants in fish. This approach allows for considering metal accumulation in intestinal parasites. Unlike "semi" physiologically-based models developed for metals, metal accumulation in fish was characterised based on metal-specific parameters (the fraction in blood plasma and the tissue-blood partition coefficient) and physiological characteristics of the fish (the blood flow and the tissue weight) in our PBPK model. In the model, intestinal parasites were considered a sink of metals from the host intestine. The model was calibrated with data for the system of the chub Squalius cephalus and the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus tereticolliis. Metal concentrations in this fish-parasite system were monitored in Ag and Co treatments in duplicate during a 48-day exposure phase (Ag and Co were added to tap water at concentrations of 1 and 2 µg/L, respectively) and a 51-day depuration phase. Their concentrations in the gills increased during the exposure phase and decreased in the depuration phase. A similar pattern was observed for Ag concentrations in other chub organs, while a relatively stable pattern for Co indicates regulations in the accumulation of essential metals by chubs. The metals were taken up by the acanthocephalans at similar rate constants. These results indicate that metal availability to parasites, which is determined by the internal distribution and fate, is critical to metal accumulation in the acanthocephalans. The high concentration of Ag in the liver as well as the high rate of Ag excretion from the liver to the intestine might contribute to higher concentrations of metals in the bile complexes in the intestine, which are available to the parasites, but not to the reabsorption by the host intestine. Mechanistic models based on chemical properties of metals and body size have received substantial attention for their potential application to various metals and to different conditions without required calibration. This advantage has been demonstrated for a number of metals, such as Cd and Ag. However, the capacity of metal-specific chemical properties to explain variations in the accumulation for platinum-group elements (PGEs) has not been investigated yet, although emission of these metals is of increasing concern. Once being released, PGEs exist in the environment in mixtures with other metals. The present study attempted to model the accumulation of Pd and Pt in mixtures with Ag and Cd in the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) from the aqueous phase; and to investigate the potential application of mechanistic models to Pd and Pt. The present study showed statistically insignificant differences in metal accumulation among size groups in a narrow range of shell length (16–22 mm). Kinetic models could simulate well the accumulation of Cd, Ag, and Pt when metal-specific responses of zebra mussels are taken into consideration. These responses include enhanced immobilisation as a detoxifying mechanism and exchange between soft tissues and shells via the extrapallial fluid. Environmental conditions, e.g. the presence of abiotic ligands such as chloride, might also play an important role in metal accumulation.
