A wire-mesh sensor (WMS) is a widely used instrument to visualize and estimate derived parameters of multiphase flows, e.g., gas void fraction or liquid hold-up. The spatial resolution of obtained flow images is associated with the number of crossing points formed by the transmitter and receiver wires of a given sensor. This may be a limitation for applications that require high spatial resolution since WMS is an intrusive device and the increase of electrodes may increase pressure drop and deform/fragment bubbles. In order to minimize such undesirable effects and maximize the sensor resolution, we employed a reconstruction algorithm based on the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) estimator to increase image resolution of WMS with fewer wires than commonly reported in the literature, i.e., here, we apply $8\times 8$ , $6\times 6$ , $4\times 4$ , and $2\times 2$ sensors for 1-in pipe. Since standard regularization approaches may provide incorrect solutions for such configurations, a new methodology to obtain the prior model is presented. In our approach, the prior is assumed as a multivariate Gaussian model, which is extracted from experimental flow data of a $16\times 16$ WMS (the most common resolution for 1-in pipe). Finally, the sensitivity matrix obtained by electric field simulation and the experimental prior model is incorporated into the MMSE algorithm to restore experimental flow data of the low-resolution sensors. The experiments were performed in a flow loop operating at slug flow. The experimental results suggest that the MMSE estimator combined with the experimental prior model has a high potential not only to improve image resolution but also to correct the average void fraction estimation. In view of the possibilities for hydrate formation caused by carbon dioxide-rich fluids in the production lines of the Brazilian Pre-Salt fields, this study focus on experimental measurements to obtain fundamental insight into the phase behavior of carbon dioxide hydrate forming systems. This work considers the influence of sodium chloride and ethanol, hydrate inhibitors, on this phase behavior and its implications to practical applications. In addition, the inhibiting effect of ethanol on hydrates was compared with that of sodium chloride at the same mass fractions. The carbon dioxide hydrate phase behavior was measured using a high-pressure equilibrium cell in the temperature range of 272-279 K and pressures up to 3.9 MPa. Experimental measurements using the isothermal method were performed by monitoring the pressure response of the system with volume changes. Enthalpies of dissociation for carbon dioxide hydrates were estimated from the measured three-phase (Lw–H–V) data by applying the Clausius–Clapeyron equation. Results showed that, at the same mass fraction of the inhibitor and high-pressure conditions, the sodium chloride exhibited a superior inhibiting effect compared to that of the ethanol. In this paper, we used infrared light in the range of 8-12 μm to develop and test an optical imaging system to detect air bubbles flowing in oil. The system basically comprises a broadband light source and a 31 × 32 thermopile array to generate images. To analyze the effects related to light absorption, reflection, and refraction on air-oil boundaries, a numerical model was developed and the predominance of the refraction instead of the absorption in bubbles with diameters below a certain critical value was observed. The IR region of the electromagnetic spectrum has both optical and thermic behavior. To understand the limits of each effect on the oil flow imaging, a study of the influence of temperature variation on the petroleum optical detection was performed. The developed optical imaging system allowed the detection of air flow in static oil and in oil-air two-phase flow. With the presented system, it was possible to achieve images through up to 12 mm of oil volumes, but this may be enhanced by the use of optimized IR sources and detectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gas-liquid two-phase flows are present in nature and in different industrial activities alike, such as the chemical, petroleum, and nuclear industries. In this type of flow, the liquid and gas phases assume different spatial configurations inside the pipe, called flow patterns. The mathematical modeling of slug flow comprises from simple steady-state models to more complex models for transient regimes. Those models require closure relationships, e.g., empirical correlations and statistical distributions of characteristic flow parameters. In this paper, a model based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) for predicting the two-phase slug flow behavior is proposed. With this ANN model, the parameters that characterize the flow are extracted from the time series of void fractions obtained experimentally. The variables of interest are superficial velocities of the fluids, liquid slug and gas bubble lengths, and the bubble translational velocity and their standard deviations. The knowledge and understanding of those parameters will improve the characterization of the intermittent slug flows and will also provide information on the development of physical models that describe this phenomenon, such as the unit cell models, the drift flux model and the slug tracking model. In general, the estimation models based on ANNs showed good results compared with reference values obtained experimentally. The results show that the estimation models present a mean square error below 2%. The methodology presented here, combining experimentally obtained void fraction time series and ANN, is an appropriated method to infer flow parameters and thus to support slug flow characterization. Single- and two-phase flow characterization using optical fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) is presented. The sensor unit consists of the optical fiber Bragg grating positioned transversely to the flow and fixed in the pipe walls. The hydrodynamic pressure applied by the liquid or air/liquid flow to the optical fiber induces deformation that can be detected by the FBG. Given that the applied pressure is directly related to the mass flow, it is possible to establish a relationship using the grating resonance wavelength shift to determine the mass flow when the flow velocity is well known. For two phase flows of air and liquid, there is a significant change in the force applied to the fiber that accounts for the very distinct densities of these substances. As a consequence, the optical fiber deformation and the correspondent grating wavelength shift as a function of the flow will be very different for an air bubble or a liquid slug, allowing their detection as they flow through the pipe. A quasi-distributed sensing tool with 18 sensors evenly spread along the pipe is developed and characterized, making possible the characterization of the flow, as well as the tracking of the bubbles over a large section of the test bed. Ultrasonic measurement techniques for velocity estimation are currently widely used in fluid flow studies and applications. An accurate determination of interfacial position in gas-liquid two-phase flows is still an open problem. The quality of this information directly reflects on the accuracy of void fraction measurement, and it provides a means of discriminating velocity information of both phases. The algorithm known as Velocity Matched Spectrum (VM Spectrum) is a velocity estimator that stands out from other methods by returning a spectrum of velocities for each interrogated volume sample. Interface detection of free-rising bubbles in quiescent liquid presents some difficulties for interface detection due to abrupt changes in interface inclination. In this work a method based on velocity spectrum curve shape is used to generate a spatial-temporal mapping, which, after spatial filtering, yields an accurate contour of the air-water interface. It is shown that the proposed technique yields a RMS error between 1.71 and 3.39 and a probability of detection failure and false detection between 0.89% and 11.9% in determining the spatial-temporal gas-liquid interface position in the flow of free rising bubbles in stagnant liquid. This work presents a new, simplified and yet efficient model for studying the transient conjugate heat transfer process in pipelines. The simplified model consists of assuming the thermal transport by fluid flow in bulk form and the pipe-wall heat conduction as two-dimensional. The scale analysis of the dimensionless equations resulting from the simplified model allows for the identification of two predicting parameters useful in determining when axial diffusion in the pipe wall is important, ψ = Pe Γ/ξ < 1 and λ = 4 Nu E 2/ξ < 1, and when radial diffusion is important, ψ > 1 and λ > 1. When these criteria are satisfied, in which case the existing analytical solution becomes invalid, the simplified model proposed here becomes an efficient alternative to the full-scale numerical simulations required for solving the problem. The scale analysis predictions and the hybrid analytical-numerical solutions of the simplified model, involving the Laplace transform and the finite-volume method, are validated first by comparison against the existing analytical solution, and then by comparison against experimental results of turbulent flow, showing excellent agreement in both cases. Wire-mesh sensors are used to determine the phase fraction of gas–liquid two-phase flow in many industrial applications. In this paper, we report the use of the sensor to study the flow behavior inside an offshore oil and gas industry device for subsea phase separation. The study focused on the behavior of gas–liquid slug flow inside a flow distribution device with four outlets, which is part of the subsea phase separator system. The void fraction profile and the flow symmetry across the outlets were investigated using tomographic wire-mesh sensors and a camera. Results showed an ascendant liquid film in the cyclonic chamber with the gas phase at the center of the pipe generating a symmetrical flow. Dispersed bubbles coalesced into a gas vortex due to the centrifugal force inside the cyclonic chamber. The behavior favored the separation of smaller bubbles from the liquid bulk, which was an important parameter for gas-liquid separator sizing. The void fraction analysis of the outlets showed an even flow distribution with less than 10% difference, which was a satisfactorily result that may contribute to a reduction on the subsea gas–liquid separators size. From the outcomes of this study, detailed information regarding this type of flow distribution system was extracted.
