Crop irrigation requirements are usually estimated based on crop evapotranspiration (ETc) as determined by the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and crop coefficient (Kc). There is a lack of knowledge on the irrigation requirements of tropical forage crops in Brazil, contrasting with the increasing use of irrigation in pastures. The effort of this study was to investigate what would be the water needs of tropical forages in Southern Brazil, based on a robust experimental database. The study was carried out in São Paulo State-Brazil using different forages species and their combinations [Guinea grass (GG); Guinea grass + black oat + ryegrass (GOR); Bermuda grass (BG), and Bermuda + black oat + ryegrass (BOR)]. The experimental fields were fully irrigated, and the Kc values were derived from ETc measurements on lysimeters; ETo was estimated using daily data from a nearby weather station and the standard FAO56 parameterization. Mean daily ETc values for GG, GOR, BG and BOR were 4.1, 2.9, 3.6, and 3.4 mm, respectively, and respective mean Kc values were 0.99, 0.90, 1.0, and 0.94. Average Kc values for all plots decreased as ETo increased, producing a negative Kc-ETo relationship, mainly when ETo reached values greater than 5 mm d−1. This was most likely due to internal plant stomatal resistance to vapor release from the leaves diffusing to the atmosphere at high ETo. So, the time-based Kc curves described by FAO 56 manual should be adjusted for the analyzed crops considering different ranges of ETo to improve the required irrigation depth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Process‐based models such as the Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM) can be useful to simulate pasture growth and development. This aim of the study is to parameterise the APSIM‐Tropical Pasture model to simulate Marandu palisade grass (Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu), irrigated and rainfed, under cut‐and‐carry management. Parameterisation was performed with experimental data collected in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil (Experiment 1: 11 growth cycles), and São Carlos, SP, Brazil (Experiment 2: 9 growth cycles). In both experiments, aboveground live biomass, leaf, stem, crown and dead material mass, specific leaf area (SLA), leaf area index (LAI) and height were assessed. In Experiment 1, soil water content was measured with a capacitance probe, at depths from 0 to 0.9 m. Calibration was performed for base temperature, light extinction coefficient and radiation use efficiency. The calibrated model proved to be accurate in simulating living biomass, leaf mass, LAI and height for all tested variables. In the irrigated system, the statistics presented values between 0.64 and 0.86 for coefficient of determination (R2), between 0.59 and 0.70 for efficiency coefficient (NSE) and between 0.88 and 0.95 for the Willmott's agreement index (d). For these same variables, in the rainfed system, R2 values ranged from 0.70 to 0.86; NSE from 0.54 to 0.70; and average d was 0.93. The simulation of soil water content showed satisfactory results for rainfed pasture, but was less precise for the irrigated treatment. Introduction Statin therapy is associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes. Among bariatric patients, the influence of this therapy on various metabolic outcomes, such as diabetes status and its remission, is largely unknown. Methods This was a retrospective study of 1710 patients who underwent bariatric surgery at our hospital between January/2010 and June/2017. We compared patients with and without statin therapy at baseline, 12 and 24 months after surgery regarding statin use and its impact on several clinical and analytical parameters. Multiple linear regression was performed, adjusting differences for age, sex, surgery type, antidiabetic drugs at baseline, hypertension at baseline, LDL cholesterol ˃ 130 mg/dL, weight variation one year after surgery, and age of obesity onset. Results The overall prevalence of statin use was 20.2% before, 13.6% 12 months after surgery, and 15.0% 24 months after surgery. There was a larger reduction in fasting glucose and HbA1c at 12 and 24 months after surgery among statin-treated patients, with the opposite trend for weight reduction and BMI. Statin-treated patients with diabetes had lower diabetes remission rates (45.3 vs 68.5%) 12 months after surgery, with the highest reduction in HbA1c (1.3±1.3 vs −1.1±1.2%; p=0.042), fasting glucose (−40.8±48.8 vs −30.9±41.6 mg/dL; p=0.028), and insulin (−21.7±28.2 vs −13.4±14.2 mIU/L; p=0.039). The proportion of new-onset cases of diabetes was equal between statin-treated vs non-treated individuals at 12 months (1.9%) and 24 months (1.0%) after surgery. Conclusion Bariatric surgery seems to lead to diabetes remission more frequently in patients not treated with statins. A larger reduction was observed in fasting glucose and HbA1c among statin-treated patients. Statin did not contribute to an increased proportion of new-onset diabetes after surgery. Bariatric surgery (BS) is the most effective therapy for severe obesity, which improves several comorbidities (such as diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, among others) and results in marked weight loss. Despite these consensual beneficial effects, sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (the two main bariatric techniques) have also been associated with changes in bone metabolism and progressive bone loss. The objective of this literature review is to examine the impact of bariatric surgery on bone and its main metabolic links, and to analyze the latest findings regarding the risk of fracture among patients submitted to bariatric surgery. Population structure and genetic connectivity are pivotal contributions to the establishment of conservation strategies for fisheries management, in particular for highly migratory species that are affected by commercial fisheries. This study used partial sequences of mitochondrial DNA control region to determine the genetic structure of the bigeye thresher shark Alopias superciliosus in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. A total of 858 base pairs of mtDNA CR from 228 individuals were analyzed. The resulting nucleotide diversity (π) was 0.0011 ± 0.0008 and the haplotype diversity (h) was 0.127 ± 0.030. These are the lowest diversities registered in elasmobranchs with this genetic marker. Two genetically distinct lineages were identified, one of them represented by 3.9% of the analyzed individuals and none restricted to any particular area. Simulated scenarios of population structure, tested with AMOVA and pairwise ΦST did not result in significant values indicating high connectivity among all sampled groups. The absence of population structure, even between Atlantic and Indian Oceans, corroborates the high dispersal ability of this species. The low genetic diversity detected in this species and the identification of two historical lineages occurring in sympatry, one represented by a very small number of individuals, should be considered in the conservation efforts and management plans of A. superciliosus. Obesity remains nowadays one of the main threats to human health, being a problem of worldwide proportions. It is characterized by augmented storage of fatty acids in an enlarged adipose tissue. This process is possible thanks to a rich capillary network, supported by a mechanism that has also a crucial role on cancer: angiogenesis. Given that several studies point obesity as a risk factor for cancer development, angiogenesis may be approached as the missed link between these two pathologies. Understanding the different pathways behind angiogenesis becomes essential to break this link by developing new anti-angiogenic therapies or improving the actual ones. In the first phase, this paper will focus the structural and cellular changes that adipose tissue suffers in obesity. Then, the main pro-angiogenic players will be reviewed, taking into account the pathways that explain their putative role in obesity–cancer link. Among the various shark species that are captured as bycatch in commercial fishing operations, the group of pelagic sharks is still one of the least studied and known. Within those, the crocodile shark, Pseudocarcharias kamoharai, a small-sized lamnid shark, is occasionally caught by longline vessels in certain regions of the tropical oceans worldwide. However, the population dynamics of this species, as well as the impact of fishing mortality on its stocks, are still unknown, with the crocodile shark currently one of the least studied of all pelagic sharks. Given this, the present study aimed to assess the population structure of P. kamoharai in several regions of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans using genetic molecular markers. The nucleotide composition of the mitochondrial DNA control region of 255 individuals was analyzed, and 31 haplotypes were found, with an estimated diversity Hd = 0.627, and a nucleotide diversity π = 0.00167. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed a fixation index ΦST = -0.01118, representing an absence of population structure among the sampled regions of the Atlantic Ocean, and between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. These results show a high degree of gene flow between the studied areas, with a single genetic stock and reduced population variability. In panmictic populations, conservation efforts can be concentrated in more restricted areas, being these representative of the total biodiversity of the species. Sharks of the genus Rhizoprionodon are among the most important predators along the coastal marine ecosystems, and they represent an important economic resource for the small-scale fisheries. To properly manage and conserve exploited shark species, detailed analyses of their population structure are needed. To evaluate the gene flow and levels of the genetic diversity among populations of the Caribbean sharpnose shark R. porosus, we identified the nucleotide sequence based on collections (n = 321 specimens) from 10 different areas, including the Caribbean Sea and several locations along the entire Brazilian coast. The analysis of 802 nucleotides from the mitochondrial DNA control region revealed 53 distinct haplotypes. The majority of these haplotypes were restricted to their collection locales with a significant genetic structure detected among the overall populations ( Φ = 0.237, P < 0.0001). The data suggest a population division with two distinct management units in the western Atlantic. These management units are likely separated by the Equatorial Current. Abstract: Hybrids of fish obtained by crossing commercial species of the family Serrasalmidae (Pacu, Pirapitinga, and Tambaqui) have been produced on a large scale by the Brazilian aquaculture industry. However, because juvenile stages are morphologically indistinguishable, pure species and hybrid stocks may be easily mixed in breeding facilities, which may ultimately reduce production on farms and could have adverse impacts on native populations, through escape of fertile hybrids to the wild. We established molecular markers using mitochondrial and nuclear genes to identify hybrid lineages of Serrasalmids and characterize them in relation to their parental species, Colossoma macropomum, Piaractus mesopotamicus, and Piaractus brachypomus. Using these diagnostic molecular tools, we then examined fish purchased from two seed producers and detected substantial admixture of pure stocks and their various hybrids. Further application of these diagnostic genetic tools is needed to assess the impacts of hybridization and stock admixture, both in the aquaculture industry and in the environment. Abstract: Interspecific fish hybrids can represent a serious threat to the aquatic environment. Consequently, genetic monitoring of organisms that are produced by interspecific hybridization aims at the application of methodologies capable of supplying, in a clear and accessible way, the identification of hybrid individuals and their respective parental species. In the present work, molecular techniques were developed to identify the hybrid lineage of “Piaupara” in order to characterize them in relation to their parental species, the female Leporinus macrocephalus (Piauçu) and the male Leporinus elongatus (Piapara). Through PCR-RFLP and multiplex-PCR, analyses involving the mitochondrial 16S DNA and nuclear α-tropomyosin gene demonstrated different electrophoretic profiles between L. macrocephalus and L. elongatus. The nuclear gene allowed the clear distinction between the parental and hybrid individuals, since the hybrids demonstrated a heterozygous pattern with diagnostic bands inherited from both parental species. The mitochondrial DNA showed the same pattern observed in L. macrocephalus in the hybrids, which can result in misidentification. The establishment of these techniques will allow the routine monitoring of the production of these hybrids in fish breeding farms and the delineation of plans for biological conservation and the proper management of the stocks. Small streams with acidic, nutrient-poor waters form a defuse hydrological system in Central Amazonia. However, little is known about the fish assemblages that occur in these systems. We investigated the relationships among stream size, substrate, and other physical-chemical factors and fish distributions. Fish assemblages and stream characteristics were sampled in 50-m long sections of streams at 38 sites distributed throughout the 100-km² florestal reserve. Forty-dine species were encountered. The mean richness was similar among sites; however, community composition was correlated with physical and chemical characteristics of the streams. The mean number of species per site (X̄ = 9) was low in relation to the total number of species recorded from the reserve (49) and in relation to the ichthyofauna that has been recorded from small forest streams near the study area. This contrasts with studies in temperate zones where strong patterns of species addition along the river continuum were found, resulting in prominent species richness gradients. The high between-site turnover in species composition and the strong habitat specificity indicate that it will be necessary to create a network of reserves to efficiently conserve the fish fauna of small forest streams in Central Amazonia. Abstract: The insecticidal activities of extracts and oils of seventeen medicinal plants of Brazil have been determined using an Aedes aegypti larvicidal bioassay. Oils from Anacardium occidentalis, Copaifera langsdorffii, Carapa guianensis, Cymbopogon winterianus and Ageratum conyzoides showed high activities with LC50 values of 14.5, 41, 57, 98 and 148 μg/l, respectively. The most active ethanolic extract tested was that from the stem of Annona glabra which presented an LC50 value of 27 μg/l. The potential application of cashew nut oil, an industrial by-product with low commercial value, in the control of the vector of dengue and yellow fever, may be proposed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Chlorophyll (Chl) concentration is one of the factors that affects crop productivity. This study investigated the prediction of chlorophyll concentrations in Mombaça grass' leaves using hyperspectral data and machine learning techniques. Chlorophyll variations were induced by different levels of nitrogen fertilization (104, 208, 312, and 416 kg ha−1). Spectral signatures (400–2500 nm) and chlorophyll contents of the leaves were obtained in October, November, and December 2017, and January 2018. Models were generated using Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR), Random Forest (RF), and Support Vector Regression (SVR). Two validation techniques were employed: holdout, dividing the data into training (75%) and testing (25%) sets; and leave‐one‐date‐out cross‐validation (LOOCV), in which one date was omitted during model training and used to predict the omitted date's value. Chlorophyll concentrations varied according to N doses, with the highest concentrations observed in October and December. In these months, there were greater variations in spectral reflectance in the green and red bands (530–680 nm). December was identified as the ideal period for chlorophyll quantification, for both holdout and LOOCV validation techniques. The SVR technique performed best (R2 = 0.71, RMSE = 0.23 mg g−1, dr = 0.72) compared to RF (R2 = 0.63, RMSE = 0.27 mg g−1, dr = 0.66) and PLSR (R2 = 0.60, RMSE = 0.27 mg g−1, dr = 0.67). Several factors contribute to the increase in irrigation demand: population growth, demand for higher value-added products, and the impacts of climate change, among others. High-quality water is essential for irrigation, so knowledge of water quality is critical. Additionally, water use in agriculture has been increasing in the last decades. Lack of water quality can cause drip clog, a lack of application uniformity, cross-contamination, and direct and indirect impacts on plants and soil. Currently, there is a need for more automated methods for evaluating and monitoring water quality for irrigation purposes, considering different aspects, from impacts on soil to impacts on irrigation systems. This work proposes a data-driven method to address this gap and implemented it in a case study in the PCJ river basin in Brazil. The methodology contains nine components and considers the main steps of the data lifecycle and the traditional machine learning workflow, allowing for automated knowledge extraction and providing important information for improving decision making. The case study illustrates the use of the methodology, highlighting its main advantages and challenges. Clustering different scenarios in three hydrological years (high, average, and lower streamflows) and considering different inputs (soil-related metrics, irrigation system-related metrics, and all metrics) helped generate new insights into the area that would not be easily obtained using traditional methods. Considering profitability in pasture-based systems, investigating parameters affecting crop coefficients for irrigation management becomes important. In this experiment, we determined the crop coefficient of 'Marandu' palisadegrass based on accumulated degree-days and estimated plant water consumption under single ('Marandu' palisadegrass) and mixed ('Marandu' palisadegrass + black oats + Italian ryegrass) cropping regimes. The research was conducted at the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, between 2016 and 2017. Evapotranspiration was assessed using weighing lysimeters while crop evapotranspiration was calculated using mean weight variation. Reference evapotranspiration and degree-days were estimated. Data were obtained from an automated weather station. Equations and regression models relating crop coefficient with accumulated degree-days were generated for two seasons (spring/summer and autumn/winter) and evaluated for two year-cycles, from 2015 to 2018. Background: Bariatric surgery leads to weight loss and to cardiometabolic risk improvement. Although prediabetes remission after bariatric surgery is biologically plausible, data on this topic is scarce. We aimed to assess prediabetes remission rate and clinical predictors of remission in a 4 year follow up period. Methods: Observational longitudinal study including patients with obesity and prediabetes who had undergone bariatric surgery in our centre. Prediabetes was defined as having a baseline glycated haemoglobin (A1c) between 5.7% and 6.4% and absence of anti-diabetic drug treatment. We used logistic regression models to evaluate the association between the predictors and prediabetes remission rate. Results: A total of 669 patients were included, 84% being female. The population had a mean age of 45.4 ± 10.1 years-old, body mass index of 43.8 ± 5.7 kg/m2, and median A1c of 5.9 [5.8, 6.1]%. After bariatric surgery, prediabetes remission rate was 82%, 73%, 66%, and 58%, respectively in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of follow-up. Gastric sleeve (GS) surgery was associated with higher prediabetes remission rate than Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in the 3rd year of follow-up. Men had a higher remission rate than women, in the 1st and 3nd years of follow-up in the unadjusted analysis. Younger patients presented a higher remission rate comparing to older patients in the 3rd year of follow-up. Conclusion: We showed a high prediabetes remission rate after bariatric surgery. The remission rate decreases over the follow-up period, although most of the patients maintain the normoglycemia. Permeable phylogeographic barriers characterize the vast open ocean, boosting gene flow and counteracting population differentiation and speciation of widely distributed and migratory species. However, many widely distributed species consists of distinct populations throughout their distribution, evidencing that our understanding of how the marine environment triggers population and species divergence are insufficient. The sailfish is a circumtropical and highly migratory billfish that inhabits warm and productive areas. Despite its ecological and socioeconomic importance as a predator and fishery resource, the species is threatened by overfishing, requiring innovative approaches to improve their management and conservation status. Thus, we presented a novel high-quality reference genome for the species and applied a seascape genomics approach to understand how marine environmental features may promote local adaptation and how it affects gene flow between populations. We delimit two populations between the Atlantic and Indo-Western Pacific oceans and detect outlier loci correlated with sea surface temperature, salinity, oxygen, and chlorophyll concentrations. However, the most significant explanatory factor that explains the differences between populations was isolation by distance. Despite recent population drops, the sailfish populations are not inbred. For billfishes in general, genome-wide heterozygosity was found to be relatively low compared to other marine fishes, evidencing the need to counteract overfishing effects. In addition, in a climate change scenario, management agencies must implement state-of-the-art sequencing methods, consider our findings in their management plans, and monitor genome-wide heterozygosity over time to improve sustainable fisheries and the long-term viability of its populations. The shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus, is an oceanic pelagic shark species found worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters. It is frequently caught by pelagic longline fisheries, but despite its commercial importance and ecological significance, little is still known about its biology and ecology at the molecular level. Therefore, we combined two massive parallel sequencing approaches, double digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRAD) and RNA sequencing (RNAseq), for single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) discovery in the shortfin mako. The ddRAD yielded a total of 82,676 putative SNPs. For RNAseq, a total of 129,663 putative SNPs were found. After the stricter filtering procedure, 405 SNPs from ddRAD and 1165 SNPs from RNAseq were retained and suitable for further analysis. Annotation analysis of SNPs from ddRAD revealed a total of 55 gene associated SNP markers, of which 32 SNPs (58.2%) are associated with diseases and defense responses, 9 SNPs (16.4%) are associated with developmental process, and 3 SNPs (5.4%) are present in genes involved in the reproductive function. For RNAseq, 739 SNPs were annotated and associated to relevant functions amongst which 10 SNPs (0.53%) were related with reproduction, 6 SNPs (0.32%) with growth, and 9 (0.48%) with locomotion. Overall, the genotyping of the SNPs was followed by the validation of 255 SNPs from ddRAD and 646 for RNAseq in 31 individuals from the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Our results provide valuable sequence resources for future population genomics analysis, comparative genomics, phylogenomics, and molecular evolution of the globally endangered shortfin mako shark. Background: One hour plasma glucose concentration (1hPG) during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) may be an alternative to 2-h plasma glucose concentration (2hPG) in the identification of individuals at increased risk of hyperglycaemia, although its role is not fully understood. Aim: We aim to investigate the relationship of these measures with other glucose parameters, as well as their relationship with cardiometabolic risk markers and the level of agreement for prediabetes mellitus diagnosis, in a sample of patients with morbid obesity. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 656 patients with morbid obesity without diagnosed diabetes. To define prediabetes with 2hPG, 2022 American Diabetes Association guidelines criteria were used, while for 1hPG, glucose ≥ 155 mg/dL was considered. Cohen's Kappa coefficient was used to assess the agreement between both measures of prediabetes mellitus diagnosis. Results: A Cohen's Kappa coefficient of 0.405 (p < 0.001) was obtained. The 1hPG were positively correlated with homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (ρ = 0.281, p < 0.001), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (ρ = 0.581, p < 0.001), glycated haemoglobin (Hb1AC) (ρ = 0.347, p < 0.001) and were negatively correlated with homeostatic model assessment for cell-β function (HOMA-β) (ρ = −0.092, p = 0.018). 2hPG were also correlated with the same parameters, except for HOMA-β. Conclusion: A fair agreement between 1 and 2hPG was verified. 1hPG criteria may be a useful indicator of β-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance in patients with morbid obesity without diabetes diagnosis. The angular angelshark (Squatina guggenheim) is a coastal endangered angel shark from the Southwest Atlantic Ocean and one of the major bycatch victims. Despite major concerns about this species, little is known about its evolutionary connectivity across its whole geographic distribution. Here, genetic connectivity and phylogeographic patterns of S. guggenheim for 122 individuals were assessed across the Southwest Atlantic Ocean regions based on a multilocus mitochondrial DNA approach to support conservation strategies. The concatenated mitochondrial dataset (control region, cytochrome b and cytochrome c oxidase I) showed high levels of haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity in S. guggenheim, with distinct genetic diversity patterns among populations. Although signs of stepping-stone gene flow were observed, a strong and statistically significant genetic structure into at least two populations was detected, matching with the species' biological traits and region's oceanographic particularities. Contrasting demographic patterns were detected, in which only southernmost Atlantic populations showed signs of population expansion. Small headwaters streams of the Neotropical region usually have high species richness and diversity. This study aimed to investigate the species composition and abundance of fish fauna in the headwaters streams of the Madeira-Purus interfluvial plain in the Brazilian Amazon. A total of 22 streams of 1st to 3rd order were sampled during two expeditions at two separate locations in April-May and July of 2007. A total of 5508 fishes were captured using hand and small seine nets, belonging to 78 species, 22 families and six orders. Characiformes was the most diverse taxonomic group in the samples, followed by Gymnotiformes and Siluriformes. Our findings indicate that the fish fauna of streams in the Madeira-Purus interfluvial plain is both rich and diverse and should be considered during the implementation of strengthened environmental conservation strategies in this region. The article presents a study on hybrid identification between Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum and Pseudoplatystoma Corruscans. The study aims to develop markers to identify the species' hybrids through the use of multiplex-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) protocols. The results of the study show some differences in the composition of nucleotides of both species.

Bariatric surgery (BS) can lead to remission of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), however, the evidence on the influence of preoperative serum magnesium levels on this reversal is scarce. To study the influence of preoperative serum magnesium levels on the pre-T2DM and T2DM remission one year after BS. Retrospective study carried out among 1656 patients with obesity who underwent BS in the Centro Hospitalar Universitário São João. T2DM and pre-T2DM remission were defined as being normal glycaemic measures of at least one year's after BS and without pharmacological therapy. To assess the association between preoperative serum magnesium levels and pre- and T2DM remission, logistic regression models, crude and adjusted for sex, age and body mass index were computed. Patients with normoglycaemia presented hypomagnesaemia less often than those patients with pre-T2DM and T2DM (17.0% vs. 21.3% vs. 39.9%) (p < 0.001). One year after BS, 62.9% of patients with pre-T2DM or T2DM before BS showed remission. Adequate magnesium levels were positively associated with T2DM and pre-T2DM remission, one year after BS (OR 1.79; 95% CI 1.34–2.38), independently of sex, age, and body mass index. This study aims to evaluate the correlation among growing degree-days (GDD), canopy height (CH), and leaf area index (LAI) for Guinea grass irrigated, considering the different combinations of the nitrogen and boron rates and cycles of regrowth. The experiment was carried out from August/2017 to August/2018 in a field experiment, and the climate of the region is classified as subtropical. A randomized block design arranged in a factorial scheme (4x3x11) with four replications was used. The treatment was (i) boron fertilization: 0, 1, and 2 kg ha-1; and (ii) nitrogen fertilization: 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 kg ha-1 distributing to 11 growth/cutting cycles. We observed the high correlation between GDD and the parameters evaluated of CH and LAI. Since the Miocene profound climatic changes have influenced the biology and ecology of species worldwide, such as their connectivity, genetic population structure, and biogeography. The goal herein is to evaluate the phylogeography of sailfish Istiophorus platypterus between the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. Our results evidenced a high genetic diversity and three distinct populations among the ocean basins with limited gene flow among them. In addition, the species is characterized by two deep evolutionary lineages that diverged during the Miocene/Pliocene transition, one of them is circumtropical while the other is restricted to the Atlantic Ocean. These lineages evolved along the successive glacial-interglacial cycles from the Pleistocene and remained isolated from each other in glacial refugium until deglaciation. Assessments of sailfish suggest it may be subject to overfishing and the results herein imply the need to re-evaluate the current stock delimitations and management measures adopted by the Regional Fisheries Management Organizations, especially in the Atlantic and the Indo-Western Pacific oceans to effectively manage the species. In addition, this work highlights that both lineages should at least be treated as two distinct management units in the Atlantic Ocean until their taxonomic status is fully resolved, given their high genetic divergence. The knowledge of the population structure of a given species is of great importance for its conservation and for the management of its fishing exploitation, especially for sharks. The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier Péron&Lesueur, 1822) is an apex predator species that is currently listed as "Near Threatened" on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. In this study, the tiger shark's genetic structure in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (MRR) and oceanic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha (FN) was investigated based on one mitochondrial and two nuclear DNA markers. In addition, sequenced data from other geographic sites were added into the mitochondrial analysis. The data showed moderate‐to‐high genetic diversity, and it is consistent with good resilience of G. cuvier in ecological terms. The structuring tests reinforced a global distinction of the species in two lineages, one being from the Indo‐Pacific and the other from the North Atlantic. Also, this analysis showed the close relationship between tiger sharks from Indo‐Pacific and South‐eastern coast of Brazil. The Bayesian and AMOVA tests indicated that tiger sharks from FN and MRR are genetically similar, forming a cohesive population. These analyses support live specimen translocations from beaches (where the attacks occur) to distant marine areas given we detected a historical cohesive population occurring between those beaches from MRR and FN Islands where the sharks migrate. Seasonality in tropical forage production is common in tropical and subtropical regions and should be identified for decision making on the stocking rate for each period. This study aimed to evaluate the variability of dry matter production of Megathyrsus maximum cv. Mombaça 'Guinea grass' over two years. The experiment was carried out from February 2016 to August 2018, under a randomised block design in a 2 × 4 factorial scheme, with four replications. Treatments consisted of (i) two growing years (2016/2017 and 2017/2018) and (ii) four seasons (spring, summer, fall, and winter). The grass was fertilised with 1,000 kg N ha−1 year−1 and sprinkler irrigated, with soil moisture monitored by tensiometry. The evaluated parameters consisted of leaf dry matter, stem dry matter and total dry matter production. The results showed that the irrigated Guinea grass reached an elevated production of dry matter (DM), with the highest yields occurring in the spring/summer period, evidencing the yiel gap in the autumn/winter. The grass showed high daily forage accumulation, expressing high productive potential, demonstrating a good indicator for animal production in intensive systems with irrigated and fertilised pastures for regions of tropical climate. The guitarfishes Pseudobatos horkelii and Pseudobatos percellens meet the criteria for threatened status as Critically Endangered (CR) and Endangered (EN), respectively. Both species occur in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. Considering the lack of data on the genetic structure of these species, the present study evaluated the genetic variability and population structure of the P. horkelii and P. percellens in the southern region of Brazil and the northern coast of Argentina, based on sequences of mitochondrial DNA, Control Region (D-loop). Samples of P. horkelii (n = 135) were analyzed in six localities situated in Northern Argentina, along the Brazilian states' coast. The mean of nucleotide diversity was 0.0053, the FST was 0.4277 and demographic analysis of P. horkelii suggests the existence of stability of the populations, with D = 0.9929, FS = 2.0155, SSD = 0.0817, R = 0.2153. In P. percellens (n = 101) were analyzed from six Brazilian localities along the coast of Santa Catarina, Paraná, and São Paulo. The mean nucleotide diversity was 0.0014 and FST value of 0.2921, the demographic analysis indicates a high migration rate of P. percellens among the localities evaluated, with D = 0.5222, FS = 0.3528, SSD = 0.01785, R = 0.3890. The shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus is an oceanic pelagic shark found worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters. However, the understanding of its biology at molecular level is still incipient. We sequenced the messenger RNA isolated from eye and liver tissues. De novo transcriptome yielded a total of 705,940 transcripts. A total of 3774 genes were differentially expressed (DEGs), with 1612 in the eye and 2162 in the liver. Most DEGs in the eye were related to structural and signaling functions, including nonocular and ocular opsin genes, whereas nine out of ten most overexpressed genes in the liver were related to tumor suppression, wound healing, and human diseases. Furthermore, DEGs findings provide insights on the monochromatic shark vision and a repertory of cancer-related genes, which may be insightful to elucidate shark resistance to cancer. Morphological identification in the field can be extremely difficult considering fragmentation of species for trade or high similarity between congeneric species. In this context, the shark group belonging to the genus Squatina is composed of three species distributed in the southern part of the western Atlantic. These three species are classified in the IUCN Red List as endangered, and they are currently protected under Brazilian law, which prohibits fishing and trade. Molecular genetic tools are now used for practical taxonomic identification, particularly in cases where morphological observation is prevented, e.g., during fish processing. Consequently, DNA barcoding was used in the present study to track potential crimes against the landing and trade of endangered species along the São Paulo coastline, in particular Squatina guggenheim (n = 75) and S. occulta (n = 5), as well as the Brazilian guitarfish Pseudobatos horkelii (n = 5). DNA barcoding revealed the continuous fishing and trafficking of these protected species, thus giving clear evidence that the current conservation models and methods of monitoring are not working. The Atlantic goliath grouper, Epinephelus itajara, is a critically endangered species, threatened by illegal fishing and the destruction of its habitats. A number of other closely related grouper species found in the western Atlantic are also fished intensively. While some countries apply rigorous legislation, illegal harvesting followed by the falsification of fish products, which impedes the correct identification of the species, is a common practice, allowing the catch to be marketed as a different grouper species. In this case, molecular techniques represent an important tool for the monitoring and regulation of fishery practices, and are essential for the forensic identification of a number of different species. In the present study, species-specific primers were developed for the Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I gene, which were applied in a multiplex PCR for the simultaneous identification of nine different species of Epinephelidae: Epinephelus itajara, E. quinquefasciatus, E. morio, Hyporthodus flavolimbatus, H. niveatus, Mycteroperca acutirostris, M. bonaci, M. marginata, and M. microlepis. Multiplex PCR is a rapid, reliable and cost-effective procedure for the identification of commercially-valuable endangered fish species, and may represent a valuable tool for the regulation and sustainable management of fishery resources. Information regarding population structure and genetic connectivity is an important contribution when establishing conservation strategies to manage threatened species. The oceanic whitetip shark, Carcharhinus longimanus, is a highly migratory, large-bodied, pelagic shark listed by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List as "vulnerable" throughout its range and “critically endangered” in the western north Atlantic. In 2014, the species was protected globally under Appendix II of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), limiting and regulating trade. This study used partial sequences of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region to determine the population genetic structure of oceanic whitetip sharks across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. 724 base pairs were obtained from 215 individuals that identifed nine polymorphic sites and defined 12 distinct haplotypes. Total nucleotide diversity (π) was 0.0013 and haplotype diversity (h) was 0.5953. The Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) evidenced moderate levels of population structure (ɸST = 0.1039) with restricted gene flow between the western and eastern Atlantic Ocean, and a strong relationship between the latter region and the Indian Ocean. Even though the oceanic whitetip is a highly migratory animal the results presented here show that their genetic variability is slightly below average of other pelagic sharks. Additionally, this study recommends that at least two populations in the Atlantic Ocean should be considered distinct (eastern and western Atlantic) and conservation efforts should be focused in areas with the greatest genetic diversity by environmental managers. There is broad consensus that the diversity of functional traits within species assemblages drives several ecological processes. It is also widely recognized that rare species are the first to become extinct following human-induced disturbances. Surprisingly, however, the functional importance of rare species is still poorly understood, particularly in tropical species-rich assemblages where the majority of species are rare, and the rate of species extinction can be high. Here, we investigated the consequences of local and regional extinctions on the functional structure of species assemblages. We used three extensive datasets (stream fish from the Brazilian Amazon, rainforest trees from French Guiana, and birds from the Australian Wet Tropics) and built an integrative measure of species rarity versus commonness, combining local abundance, geographical range, and habitat breadth. Using different scenarios of species loss, we found a disproportionate impact of rare species extinction for the three groups, with significant reductions in levels of functional richness, specialization, and originality of assemblages, which may severely undermine the integrity of ecological processes. The whole breadth of functional abilities within species assemblages, which is disproportionately supported by rare species, is certainly critical in maintaining ecosystems particularly under the ongoing rapid environmental transitions. Summary: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is associated with environmental factors, especially tobacco and alcohol consumption. Most of the carcinogens present in tobacco smoke are converted into DNA-reactive metabolites by cytochrome P450 (CYPs) enzymes and detoxification of these substances is performed by glutathione S-transferases (GSTs). It has been suggested that genetic alterations, such as polymorphisms, play an important role in tumorigenesis and HNSCC progression. The aim of this study was to investigate CYP1A1, CYP1A2, CYP2E1, GSTM1, and GSTT1 polymorphisms as risk factors in HNSCC and their association with clinicopathologic data. The patients comprised 153 individuals with HNSCC (cases) and 145 with no current or previous diagnosis of cancer (controls). Genotyping of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the CYP1A1, CYP1A2, and CYP2E1 genes was performed by PCR-RFLP and the GSTM1 and GSTT1 copy number polymorphisms (CNPs) were analyzed by PCR-multiplex. As expected, a significant difference was detected for tobacco and alcohol consumption between cases and controls (P <0.001). It was observed that the CYP1A2*1D (OR=16.24) variant and GSTM1 null alleles (OR=0.02) confer increased risk of HNSCC development (P <0.001). In addition, head and neck cancer alcohol consumers were more frequently associated with the CYP2E1*5B variant allele than control alcohol users (P <0.0001, OR=190.6). The CYP1A2*1C polymorphism was associated with tumor recurrence (log-rank test, P =0.0161). The CYP2E1*5B and GSTM1 null alleles were significantly associated with advanced clinical stages (T3+T4; P =0.022 and P =0.028, respectively). Overall, the findings suggested that the genetic polymorphisms studied are predictors of risk and are also associated with tumor recurrence, since they are important for determining the parameters associated with tumor progression and poor outcomes in HNSCC. Signs of an Aleurodicus pseudugesii attack includes silver tone on the plant's crown, and sooty molds. The negative impact of whitefly on the coconut palm is also discussed. In addition, the article notes that Aleurodicus pseudugesii colonies concentrate on the lower surface of leaflets and on coconut leaves to protect itself from adverse environmental conditions.

1. The effects of seasonal inundation on the biology of fishes on floodplains of large Amazonian rivers are well studied. However, the small seasonal changes in headwater streams are generally considered to have little effect on fish assemblages. 2. In this study, we analysed seasonal changes in the species composition and abundance of fish in small Amazonian forest streams. We sampled fish with hand and seine nets in headwater streams in a 10 000 ha terra-firme forest reserve near Manaus, Brazil. Each stream was surveyed at the end of the 2005 dry season, at the beginning of the 2006 rainy season and at the beginning of the 2006 dry season, by means of a standardized sampling effort. 3. The numbers of individuals and species caught were higher in the dry season, but rarefaction analyses indicated that greater species numbers could have been due simply to the larger number of individuals caught. 4. Between the dry and rainy season, the direction of changes in species composition in multivariate space varied among sites, especially for quantitative (abundance) data. However, the observed variation among sites was the less than expected if the directions of change were random. 5. Fish assemblages in the second dry season were more similar to those in the previous dry season than expected if changes in species composition among seasons were random. This indicates that a general seasonal pattern in fish assemblages can be detected, despite the existence of some erratic site-specific changes. 6. Most of the species that showed large seasonal variations in density occupy temporary ponds during the rainy season, when much of the valley is inundated and pond networks form adjacent to streams. Short-duration lateral migrations to these ponds may play an important role in the seasonal fish-assemblage dynamics in Amazonian headwater streams. 7. Our results contrast with previous studies on small Amazonian streams, which have found little seasonal change in fish assemblages, and highlight the importance of the abundance of common species as an indicator of general fish assemblage structure in biological monitoring programmes. Ethological studies are conducted under laboratory conditions using workers of Atta sexdens sexdens and Atta opaciceps collected from field colonies to investigate the mechanisms involved in the alarm response and intra-specific recognition in leaf-cutting ants. Hexane extracts from the heads of gardeners and generalist workers elicit higher levels of alarm response in foragers from the same colony than do mandibular gland extracts from foragers and soldiers, indicating that gardeners, generalists and foragers are primarily responsible for the production of alarm pheromone. Foragers subjected to extracts from non-nestmates exhibit significantly greater alarm responses than are induced by similar extracts derived from nestmate workers, suggesting that the alarm pheromone may have a role in nestmate recognition. Abstract: Wastewater reuse in agriculture is recognized worldwide as an alternative water and/or nutrient source. In this study, secondary treated wastewater (STW) from an anaerobic/facultative pond system at the city of Lins (São Paulo State, Brazil) was used over 3 years and 7 months to irrigate coffee (Coffea arabica L.). The soil type was Typic Haplustox and the crops were fertilized according to regional agronomical recommendations. Soil and leaf samples from three sampling campaigns were used to study effects on chemical quality parameters, macronutrients and Na within the soil–plant system. Due to high Na contents of the STW applied, Na concentrations showed increases throughout the soil profile compared to untreated soil conditions. Both, low C/N ratio of STW and fertilizer amendments stimulated soil microbial activity and encouraged nitrification and mineralization of wastewater organic components and soil organic matter (SOM) causing significant decreases of SOM and cation exchange capacity (CEC). Over time exchangeable sodium percentages (ESP) in the topsoil decreased due to Na exchange mainly by Ca and Mg, resulting in increasing exchangeable calcium percentage (ECP) and exchangeable magnesium percentage (EMP) associated with lower soil sodicity. Exchanged Na and available soluble Na from STW led to both elevated ESP at depth by soil migration and high plant uptake. The superficial increase of ECP and EMP favored continuous replenishment of Ca and Mg in the soil solution leading to increasing plant contents over time. The plant Ca, Mg and K contents remained high after fertilization stop and continued STW irrigation. This is expected to be rather a short-lived effect due to a reduction of the essential cation store through constantly provided Na and insufficient supply of essential cations via STW, associated with decrease of SOM and CEC and higher sodicity risk, suggesting the need of continued fertilizer use for soil maintenance. On the other hand, the plant contents of P, N and S dropped back to deficient values when irrigated solely with STW mainly due to insufficient replenishment by STW and the anion exchange complex (AEC) indicating moreover the need to continue fertilization to maintain anion levels in soil for optimum plant growth. The study revealed that STW can effectively increase water resources for irrigation, however, innovative and adapted fertilizer/STW management strategies are needed to diminish sodicity risks and to sustain adequate and balanced nutritional conditions in the soil–plant system. The effect of habitat structural features and physicochemical characteristics of the water on the composition and richness of fish assemblages in temporary ponds near streams were examined at three spatial scales: among ponds, among streams and between drainage basins, in a ‘terra-firme’ (not subject to long-term flooding) forest reserve in Central Amazonia. 2. The fish assemblage in temporary ponds was composed of subsets of 18 small-bodied species widely distributed in the reserve. The assemblages had a nested subset structure, where smaller ponds contained subgroups of the species found in larger ponds. 3. Species composition and richness in temporary ponds were similar between drainage basins, although the fish assemblages in streams differed between basins. 4. Fish assemblage structure was influenced by local factors related to habitat structure, such as pond area and depth, canopy cover and hydroperiod. Physicochemical characteristics of the water in the ponds were similar between drainage basins and had little detectable effect on the structure of pond fish assemblages. 5. No correspondence was found between the composition, richness or abundance of fishes in the ponds and in stretches of the streams adjacent to the ponds. Proteomics is a powerful approach to study the molecular mechanisms of cancer. In this study, we aim to characterize the proteomic profile of gastric cancer (GC) in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2. Forty GC tissue samples including 19 cases from diabetic patients and 21 cases from individuals without diabetes (control group) were selected for the proteomics analysis. Gastric tissues were processed following the single-pot, solid-phase-enhanced sample preparation approach—SP3 and enzymatic digestion with trypsin. The resulting peptides were analyzed by LC-MS Liquid Chromatography—Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS). The comparison of protein expression levels between GC samples from diabetic and non-diabetic patients was performed by label-free quantification (LFQ). A total of 6599 protein groups were identified in the 40 samples. Thirty-seven proteins were differentially expressed among the two groups, with 16 upregulated and 21 downregulated in the diabetic cohort. Statistical overrepresentation tests were considered for different annotation sets including the Gene Ontology(GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), Reactome, and Disease functional databases. Upregulated proteins in the GC samples from diabetic patients were particularly enriched in respiratory electron transport and alcohol metabolic biological processes, while downregulated proteins were associated with epithelial cancers, intestinal diseases, and cell–cell junction cellular components. Taken together, these results support the data already obtained by previous studies that associate diabetes with metabolic disorders and diabetes-associated diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and also provide valuable insights into seven GC-associated protein targets, claudin-3, polymeric immunoglobulin receptor protein, cadherin-17, villin-1, transglutaminase-2, desmoglein-2, and mucin-13, which warrant further investigation. Today, elasmobranchs are one the most threatened vertebrate groups worldwide. In fact, at least 90% of elasmobranch species are listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, while more than 40% are data-deficient. Although these vertebrates are mainly affected by unsustainable fishery activities, bycatch is also one of the major threats to sharks and batoids worldwide, and represents a challenge for both sustainable fishery management and for biodiversity and conservational efforts. Thus, in this study, DNA barcode methodology was used to identify the bycatch composition of batoid species from small-scale industrial fisheries in the southwest Atlantic and artisanal fisheries from southeast Brazil. A total of 228 individuals belonging to four Chondrichthyes orders, seven families, and at least 17 distinct batoid species were sequenced; among these individuals, 131 belonged to species protected in Brazil, 101 to globally threatened species, and some to species with trade restrictions provided by Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). These results highlight the impacts on marine biodiversity of bycatch by small-scale industrial and unmanaged artisanal fisheries from the southwest Atlantic, and support the implementation of DNA-based methodologies for species-specific identification in data-poor fisheries as a powerful tool for improving the quality of fisheries' catch statistics and for keeping precise bycatch records.
