The aim of presented study was to test nutritional properties of potato tubers and silver ions accumulation pattern after foliar application of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) during potato vegetation. Potato plants were sprayed with different concentration of Ag nanoparticles (0.1, 1.0 and 10 mg·dm−3) synthesized with incorporation with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and sodium citrate as stabilizing agent. The lowest amounts of silver ions were transported to the tubers after spraying with AgNPs synthesized with SDS, rather than with citrate. Nevertheless silver ions accumulation in tubers was negligible. SDS method of synthesis was more favourable in terms of nutritional properties of potato tubers. The highest tested concentration of AgNPs_SDS had a favourable effect on a variety of macro- and micronutrients, ascorbic acid and soluble sugars. In turn, lower concentrations of AgNPs_SDS increased the content of phenolic compounds and free radical scavenging efficiency of tubers. The gasochromic properties of WO 3 thin films deposited by electron beam evaporation were investigated, focusing on their structural, morphology and optical changes caused by heat treatment. Moreover, the influence of the thickness and type of catalyst on the gasochromic properties of WO 3 was examined. X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that WO 3 thin films annealed up to 473 K remained amorphous, whereas annealing at 673 K and above, initiated crystallization into a monoclinic structure. Gasochromic behaviour was observed in response to hydrogen exposure, with the most significant changes occurring in films annealed at 673 K with a thin adlayer of palladium catalyst. A gasochromic response of 1.84 was achieved for H 2 concentration as low as 25 ppm. The process of gasochromic colouration was correlated with the changes of free charge carrier concentration calculated based on Drude free electron theory. XPS analysis confirms WO 3 reduction under hydrogen exposure, validating proposed colouration mechanisms. For the first time, an analysis of leukocyte changes in the organs of the immune system (pronephros, mesonephros, and spleen) of the Baikal omul Coregonus migratorius (Georgi, 1775) (Salmoniformes: Coregonidae) infected with Dibothriocephalus dendriticus (Nitsch, 1824) (syn. Diphyllobothrium dendriticum) (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea) is presented in natural habitat conditions. In the pronephros of infected fish, the number of poorly differentiated neutrophils (myelocytes and metamyelocytes) was significantly higher than in uninfected fish, which indicated inflammatory processes. D. dendriticus triggered the immunoregulatory processes in the body of infected fish, as evidenced by the decrease in the total number of lymphocytes and prolymphocytes (B-lymphocytes) in the pronephros and the increase in prolymphocytes in the spleen. [Display omitted] This present work demonstrated the functional transformation of 3D printed metal substrates into a new family of Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering substrates, a promising approach in developing SERS-based Point-of-care (PoC) analytical platforms. l -Powder Bed Fusion (l -PBF, Additive manufacturing or 3D printing technique) printed metal substrates have rough surfaces, and exhibit high thermal stability and intrinsic chemical inertness, necessitating a suitable surface functionalization approach. This present work demonstrated a unique multi-stage approach to transform l -PBF printed metal structures as recyclable SERS substrates by colloidal carbon templating, chemical vapor deposition, and electroless plating methods sequentially. The surface of the printed metal structures was functionalized using the colloidal carbon soot particles, that were formed by the eucalyptus oil flame deposition method. These carbon particles were shown to interact with the metals present in the printed structures by forming metal carbides and function as an adlayer on the surface. Subsequent deposition of TiO 2 onto these templates led to strong grafting of TiO 2 and retaining the fractal structure of the soot template onto the metal surface. Electroless deposition of silver nanoparticles resulted in the formation of fractally structured TiO 2 /Ag nanostructures and these functionalized printed metal structures were shown as excellent SERS substrates in enhancing the vibrational spectral features of Rhodamine B (RhB). The presence of TiO 2 photocatalyst on the surface was shown to remove the RhB analyte from the surface under photochemical conditions, which enables the regeneration of SERS activity, and the substrate can be recycled. The migration of metals from the printed metal structures into the fractally ordered TiO 2 /Ag nanostructures was found to enhance the photocatalytic activity and increase the recyclability of these substrates. This study demonstrates the potential of 3D-printed Inconel metal substrates as next-generation recyclable SERS platforms, offering a substantial advancement over traditional colloidal, thin-film, flexible, and hard SERS substrates. Modern gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) allows for the analysis of complex samples, such as fragrances. However, identifying all the constituents in natural fragrance mixtures, especially allergens that need to be listed on product labels, is a significant challenge. This is primarily due to the high complexity of the sample and the fact that electron ionization, the most commonly used ionization method in GC–MS, produces numerous nonspecific fragment ions, often resulting in the absence or very low abundance of the molecular ion. These factors affect confidence in assigning the analyte. In this study, we demonstrate that the combination of GC × GC separation, with high mass resolution and accurate mass measurements, as well as chemical ionization in addition to traditional electron ionization, becomes an efficient tool for reliable qualitative analysis of a mixture containing 100 fragrance allergens, even when many of them are closely related species or isomers. The proposed approach expands the applicability of the comprehensive GC × GC-HRMS method, which includes complementary ionization techniques, from studies on anthropogenic priority pollutants and emerging contaminants to the analysis of natural products. Although targeted qualitative and quantitative analysis of allergens in the modern laboratories is well organized, GC × GC-HRMS, being a useful complement to routine quality control of volatile allergens in fragrances, definitely gives an additional contribution to the analytical cases when conventional 1D-GC–MS faces some problems or uncertainties. The global burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in young children is high. The RSV prevention strategies approved in 2023 will be essential to lowering the global disease burden. In this Series paper, we describe clinical presentation, burden of disease, hospital management, emerging therapies, and targeted prevention focusing on developments and groundbreaking publications for RSV. We conducted a systematic search for literature published in the past 15 years and used a non-systematic approach to analyse the results, prioritising important papers and the most recent reviews per subtopic. Annually, 33 million episodes of RSV LRTI occur in children younger than 5 years, resulting in 3·6 million hospitalisations and 118 200 deaths. RSV LRTI is a clinical diagnosis but a clinical case definition and universal clinical tool to predict severe disease are non-existent. The advent of molecular point-of-care testing allows rapid and accurate confirmation of RSV infection and could reduce antibiotic use. There is no evidence-based treatment of RSV, only supportive care. Despite widespread use, evidence for high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy is insufficient and increased paediatric intensive care admissions and intubation indicate the need to remove HFNC therapy from standard care. RSV is now a vaccine-preventable disease in young children with a market-approved long-acting monoclonal antibody and a maternal vaccine targeting the RSV prefusion protein. To have a high impact on life-threatening RSV infection, infants at high risk, especially in low-income and middle-income countries, should be prioritised as an interim strategy towards universal immunisation. The implementation of RSV preventive strategies will clarify the full burden of RSV infection. Vaccine probe studies can address existing knowledge gaps including the effect of RSV prevention on transmission dynamics, antibiotic misuse, the respiratory microbiome composition, and long-term sequalae. This study explores the impact of organic cations in bismuth iodide complexes on their memristive behavior in metal-insulator-metal (MIM) type thin-layer devices. The presence of electron-donating and electron withdrawing functional groups (-CN, -CH3, -NH2, and -N(CH3)2) on pyridinium cations induces morphological alterations in crystals, thus influencing the electronic or ionic conductivity of devices comprising sandwiched thin layers (thickness = 200 nm ± 50) between glass/ITO as bottom electrode (~110 nm) and copper (~80 nm) as the top electrode. It was found that the current-voltage (I-V) scans of the devices reveal characteristic pinched hysteresis loops, a distinct signature of memristors. The working voltage windows are significantly influenced by both the types of cation and the dimensionality of ionic fragments (0D or 1D) in the solid-state form. Additionally, the temperature alters the surface area of the I-V loops by affecting resistive switching mechanisms, corresponding log-log plots at three temperatures (-30 °C, room temperature and 150 °C) are fully studied. Given that a memristor can operate as a single synapse without the need for programming, aligning with the requirements of neuromorphic computing, the study investigates long-term depression, potentiation, and spike-time-dependent plasticity-a specific form of the Hebbian learning rule-to mimic biologically synaptic plasticity. Different polar pulses, such as triangle, sawtooth, and square waveforms were employed to generate Hebbian learning rules. The research demonstrates how the shape of the applied pulse series, achieved by overlapping pre- and postpulses at different time scales, in association with the composition and dimensionality of ionic fragments, lead to changes in the synaptic weight percentages of the devices. Most oxidation studies involving interconnects are conducted in air under isothermal conditions, but during real-life solid oxide cell (SOC) operation, cells are also exposed a mixture of hydrogen and water vapor. For this study, an Fe–16Cr low-chromium ferritic stainless steel was coated with different reactive element oxides – Gd 2 O 3 , CeO 2 , Ce 0.9 Y 0.1 O 2 – using an array of methods: dip coating, electrodeposition and spray pyrolysis. The samples underwent oxidation experiments carried out over 100 h in three different atmospheres at 800 °C: air, an air/H 2 O mixture, and an Ar/H 2 /H 2 O mixture. The influence of different atmospheres on the corrosion of the Fe–16Cr steel was determined via oxidation kinetics studies; the corrosion product was evaluated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and area-specific resistance (ASR) measurements. All coated samples exhibited lower parabolic oxidation rate constants than bare steel and most also had lower ASR. The applied modifications were found to be sufficiently effective to allow the investigated low-chromium steel to be considered for application as an interconnect material for SOCs. The electrophoretic deposition of a mixture of copper-manganese spinel oxide matrix with perovskite oxide dispersion phase and subsequent two-step sintering was investigated as a means of obtaining a new spinel/perovskite composite coating for application in metallic interconnects for solid oxide cell (SOC) technologies. The effect of a number of factors was examined, including electrophoretic deposition parameters such as solvent type, time, voltage, and dispersant content as well as different heat treatment conditions on the quality of the matrix of the coating material. A solution of ethanol-acetone (25/75 v/v) and 2.0 g L−1 of iodine dispersant with a deposition time of 60 s and a voltage of 60 V provided the thickest, most uniform coating as deposited. SEM observations showed that a dense coating of Cu–Mn spinel was obtained after 8 h of reduction at 1000 °C followed by 6 h of oxidation at 850 °C. Selected preparation parameters were applied to deposit composite coatings with a Cu–Mn spinel matrix and the addition of LNF, LSC and LSCF perovskites. Composite materials with the composition (100-x)Cu 1.3 Mn 1.7 O 4 /xLaNi 0.6 Fe 0.4 O 3 (CMxLNF, where: x = 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 and 50 wt%) were evaluated as possible coating materials for SOFC/SOEC metallic interconnects. The introduction of LaNi 0.6 Fe 0.4 O 3 into spinel matrices improved electrical conductivity compared to pure Cu 1.3 Mn 1.7 O 4. The measured Seebeck coefficient values indicate that carrier concentration increased with LaNi 0.6 Fe 0.4 O 3 content, yet the activation energy of the carriers' mobility decreased. Extensive structural and microstructural studies of selected CM/LNF systems showed that composite material components exhibited high stability in relation to one another. Additionally, LaNi 0.6 Fe 0.4 O 3 significantly improved the chemical stability of Cu 1.3 Mn 1.7 O 4 in the presence of chromia, as tested after 150 h of exposure to air at 800 °C. Finally, coatings based on selected composite powders were deposited electrophoretically on the steel and were oxidized for 1500 h in air at 750 °C, confirming that CM10LNF can be applied as effective protective-conducting coatings on low-chromium ferritic steel. • Cu 1.3 Mn 1.7 O 4 (CM) spinel / LaNi 0.6 Fe 0.4 O 3 (LNF) perovskite composites were prepared. • CM/LNF components are mutually stable after sintering. • Adding LNF to CM matrix improves electrical conductivity. • CM/LNF has better chemical stability vs chromia than reference CM. • CM10LNF coating on FSS substrate is more corrosion-resistant than CM. A numerical model has been elaborated to calculate ULF electromagnetic fields in the ground-atmosphere–ionosphere system created by an underground horizontal current source of a finite length. The modeling has enabled us to examine in detail characteristic features of ULF response to an underground large-scale emitter that may be used for a search of electromagnetic earthquake precursors. The most promising features that might discriminate signals from an underground source and from a magnetosphere-ionosphere source are (a) the apparent impedance of the electromagnetic field derived from simultaneous observations of horizontal magnetic and electric fields, and (b) the ratio of vertical and horizontal magnetic component amplitudes. Besides that, the amplitude-phase gradients of signals from an underground source differ significantly from those of the magnetospheric source. For the same magnitude of horizontal magnetic disturbance on surface, an underground current source produces in a borehole a much larger vertical electric field Ez than a magnetospheric source does. At the same time, some properties, such as the ratio between the vertical and horizontal electric components, are shown to be ineffective. However, all these differences with ionosphere-magnetosphere source reveal themselves only in a vicinity of lithospheric source (< 30 km for depth 20 km). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: An intricate physiological and pathophysiological connection exists between the heart and lungs, which is especially important in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). While an exercise intervention may seem the best approach to leverage this relationship, the prior work has shown that, despite numerous health benefits, regular exercise training does not improve cardiorespiratory control in individuals with SCI. Breath training presents an alternative intervention that is uniquely accessible, with yogic breathing directly engaging linked fluctuations in respiration and cardiovascular control. In addition, there is evidence across a range of populations that regular yogic breathing reduces cardiovascular disease risk. It is possible that the chronic decrease in breathing frequency associated with regular yogic breathing, rather than the specific yogic breathing techniques themselves, is the primary contributor to the observed risk reduction. Methods: Therefore, in 12 individuals with traumatic SCI from C4 to T8, the authors compared Unpaced and conventional 0.083 Hz (Slow) paced breathing with various yogic breathing techniques including: (1) inspiratory–expiratory breath holds (i.e., Kumbhaka or "Box Breathing"), (2) extended exhalation (1:2 duty cycle), and (3) expiratory resistance via throat constriction (i.e., Ujjayi). Beat-to-beat heart rate and blood pressure were measured as well as end-tidal CO2 and O2 saturation were measured. Statistical analysis was performed using a one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance with post hoc pairwise t tests corrected for multiple comparisons. Results: As expected, all slow breathing patterns markedly increased respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) compared with Unpaced in all (n = 12) individuals. More importantly, Ujjayi breathing appeared to improve ventilatory efficiency over Unpaced breathing in individuals with SCI by increasing O2 saturation (97.6% vs. 96.1%; p = 0.042) and tended to decrease end-tidal CO2 (32 mmHg vs. 35 mmHg; p = 0.08). While other slow breathing patterns demonstrated similar effects, only Ujjayi improved RSA while increasing heart rate and improving ventilatory efficiency. Conclusions: Hence, slow breathing per se can result in important cardiorespiratory changes, but the yogic breathing practice of Ujjayi, with glottic throat resistance, may hold the greatest promise for improving cardiorespiratory control in individuals with SCI (CTR ID No. NCT05480618). High dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy is integral for the treatment of numerous cancers. Preclinical studies involving HDR brachytherapy are limited. We aimed to describe a novel platform allowing multi-modality studies with clinical HDR brachytherapy and external beam irradiators, establish baseline dosimetry standard of a preclinical orthovoltage irradiator, to determine accurate dosimetric methods. A dosimetric assessment of a commercial preclinical irradiator was performed establishing the baseline dosimetry goals for clinical irradiators. A 3D printed platform was then constructed with 14 brachytherapy channels at 1cm spacing to accommodate a standard tissue culture plate at a source-to-cell distance (SCD) of 1 cm or 0.4 cm. 4-Gy CT-based treatment plans were created in clinical treatment planning software and delivered to 96-well tissue culture plates using an Ir192 source or a clinical linear accelerator. Standard calculation models for HDR brachytherapy and external beam were compared to corresponding deterministic model-based dose calculation algorithms (MBDCAs). Agreement between predicted and measured dose was assessed with 2D-gamma passing rates to determine the best planning methodology. Mean (±standard deviation) and median dose measured across the plate for the preclinical irradiator was 423.7 ± 8.5 cGy and 430.0 cGy. Mean percentage differences between standard and MBDCA dose calculations were 9.4% (HDR, 1 cm SCD), 0.43% (HDR, 0.4 cm SCD), and 2.4% (EBRT). Predicted and measured dose agreement was highest for MBDCAs for all modalities. A 3D-printed tissue culture platform can be used for multi-modality irradiation studies with great accuracy. While religion constituted one of the main topics of interest for early social scientists, faith traditions have silently slipped from this central role. When religion now appears in psychological research, it is usually relegated to the position of either the object of psychological investigation (which psychology purports to "explain") or a static piece in the empirical puzzle (as one variable among many when explaining clinical or social outcomes). In either case, religion is generally no longer seen as an equal partner to the social sciences in our attempts to better understand of the human condition. However, there are and have been voices within psychology that see this as unnecessarily myopic. James Jackson Putnam (1846–1918), an early supporter of the emerging field of psychoanalysis, advocated that psychology take seriously philosophy, metaphysics, and religion. Putnam's objections to the narrowing of our view of human life in the spirit of scientism fell largely on deaf ears, and his call for psychology to include that which lies beyond the walls of empirical naturalism and reductionism remains relevant today. In as far as theoretical innovation in psychology is more of a creative recognition than true scientific discovery, philosophy and religion constitute tremendously rich, and unfortunately underappreciated, fonts of inspiration. Putnam saw in religion the "dim recognition" of "the creative spirit of the universe." We briefly reflect on the example of obsessive–compulsive disorder and the much older religious concept of scruples, including approaches to mindfulness. Nowadays, searching for novel antimicrobial agents is crucial due to the increasing number of resistant bacterial strains. Moreover, cancer therapy is a major challenge for modern medicine. Currently used cytostatics have a large number of side effects and insufficient therapeutic effects. Due to the above-mentioned facts, we undertook research to synthesize novel compounds from the acylhydrazone group aimed at obtaining potential antimicrobial and anticancer agents. As a starting material, we employed hydrazides of 2-, 3- or 4-iodobenzoic acid, which gave three series of acylhydrazones in the condensation reaction with various aldehydes. The chemical structure of all obtained compounds was confirmed by IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. The structure of selected compounds was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Additionally, all samples were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction. The other issue in this research was to examine the possibility of the solvent-free synthesis of compounds using mechanochemical methods. The biological screening results revealed that some of the newly synthesized compounds indicated a beneficial antimicrobial effect even against MRSA—the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300 strain. In many cases, the antibacterial activity of synthesized acylhydrazones was equal to or better than that of commercially available antibacterial agents that were used as reference substances in this research. The skin of amphibians is a rich source of peptides with a wide range of biological activities. They are stored in secretory granules in an inactive form. Upon stimulation, they are secreted together with proteases into the skin. Once activated, they rapidly exert their biological effects, including fighting microorganisms and predators, while their excess is immediately destroyed by the released proteases. To keep bioactive peptides in their initial form, it is necessary to inhibit these enzymes. Several inhibitors for this purpose have previously been mentioned; however, there has not been any reliable comparison of their efficiency so far. Here, we studied the efficiency of methanol and hydrochloric and formic acids, as well as phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, in the inhibition of nine frog peptides with the known sequence, belonging to five families in the secretion of Pelophylax esculentus. The results demonstrated that methanol had the highest inhibitory efficiency, while phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride was the least efficient, probably due to its instability in aqueous media. Possible cleavages between certain amino acid residues in the sequence were established for each of the inhibitors. These results may be helpful for future studies on the nature of proteases and on prediction of the possible cleavage sites in novel peptides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most EU countries are trying to develop new sources of energy to meet local power requirements due to energy shortages. The most popular renewable energy developments include biogas stations, wind turbines, water turbines, and solar systems. This article focuses on reviewing studies concerning the utilization of solar energy systems, especially photovoltaic (PV) ones, in European countries such as Germany, Italy, Spain, and Poland, which are leaders in PV installations. The review identifies factors influencing the development of PV investments and the energy situation in these countries. Economic, market, environmental, and infrastructural barriers, as well as driving factors, are presented. In all countries, the majority of installations were in the prosumer sector, with only a very small percentage in the state-owned sector. The methodology of the study covered the mentioned barriers, which were identified using scientific databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and branch organizations websites like the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The novelty of the article lies in its examination of special barriers concerning green energy production in chosen EU countries. Normally, when reading articles on PV installations, as presented in the References section, one primarily observes a description of the construction process without deep involvement in the presented ideas. The presence of pharmaceuticals or their active metabolites in receiving waters is a sign of the inefficient removal of bioactive substrates from wastewater. Adsorption seems to be the most effective and inexpensive method of their removal. Waste management aimed at sorbents is a promising way to sustain several sustainable development goals. In the presented paper, the removal of the two most widely used drugs in the wastewater was examined. Diclofenac and carbamazepine were removed from water and wastewater using textile waste-derived sorbents. Their removal efficiency was verified by testing several process parameters such as the time of the sorption, the presence of interfering inorganic ions, the presence of dissolved organic matter, the initial pH and ionic strength of the solution, and various water matrices. The adsorption capacity was noted for diclofenac (57.1 mg/g) and carbamazepine (21.25 mg/g). The tested process parameters (pH, presence of inorganic ions, dissolved organic matter, ionic strength, water matrix) confirmed that the presented waste materials possessed a great potential for pharmaceutical removal from water matrices. Onychomycosis is a common fungal nail infection that is difficult to diagnose due to its similarity to other nail conditions. Accurate identification is essential for effective treatment. The current gold standard methods include microscopic examination with potassium hydroxide, fungal cultures, and Periodic acid-Schiff biopsy staining. These conventional techniques, however, suffer from high turnover times, variable sensitivity, reliance on human interpretation, and costs. This study examines the potential of integrating AI (artificial intelligence) with visualization tools like dermoscopy and microscopy to improve the accuracy and efficiency of onychomycosis diagnosis. Background: The gut microbiota has been implicated in Parkinson's disease (PD), with alterations observed in microbial composition and reduced microbial species richness, which may influence gastrointestinal symptoms in PD patients. It remains to be determined whether the severity of gastrointestinal symptoms correlates with microbiota variations in PD patients treated pharmacologically or with subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN‐DBS) therapy. This study aims to explore how these treatments affect gut microbiota and gastrointestinal symptoms in PD, identifying specific microbial differences associated with each treatment modality. Methods: A total of 42 individuals diagnosed with PD, along with 38 age‐matched household control participants, contributed stool samples for microbiota characterization. Differences in the gut microbiota across various groups of PD patients and their households were identified through comprehensive sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Key Results: Differences in microbial communities were observed between PD patients and controls, as well as between PD patients receiving pharmacological treatment and those with STN‐DBS. Pharmacologically treated advanced PD patients have higher gastrointestinal dysfunctions. Gut microbiota profile linked to STN‐DBS and reduced levodopa consumption, characterized by its anti‐inflammatory properties, might play a role in diminishing gastrointestinal dysfunction relative to only pharmacological treatments. In this paper, we present a continuation of our research on modeling electrolyte solutions within charged pores. We make use of the model developed by Blossey et al. [Phys. Rev. E 95, 060602 (2017)], which takes into account the structural interactions between ions through a bilinear form over the gradients of local ionic concentrations in the grand thermodynamic potential, as well as their steric interactions through the lattice gas model. The structural interactions may describe the effects of the molecular structure of ions at a phenomenological level. For example, these effects include steric effects due to non-spherical shapes of ions, their conformational lability, and solvent effects. In addition, we explore their specific interactions with the pore walls by incorporating external attractive potentials. Our primary focus is on observing the behavior of ionic concentration profiles and the disjoining pressure as the pore width changes. By starting with the local mechanical equilibrium condition, we derive a general expression for the disjoining pressure. Our findings indicate that considering the structural interactions of ions leads to a pronounced minimum on the disjoining pressure profiles at small pore widths. We attribute this minimum to the formation of electric double layers on the electrified surfaces of the pore. In addition, our results demonstrate that the inclusion of the attractive interactions of ions with the pore walls enhances this minimum and shifts it to smaller pore thicknesses. Our theoretical discoveries may be useful for those involved in supercapacitor electrochemical engineering, particularly when working with porous electrodes that have been infused with concentrated electrolyte solutions. However, a biological function in bone has never been defined for the highly evolutionarily conserved type IV collagen. Collagen type IV alpha 1 (COL4A1) and alpha 2 (COL4A2) form α1α1α2 (IV) heterotrimers that represent a fundamental basement membrane constituent present in every organ of the body, including the skeleton. COL4A1 and COL4A2 mutations cause Gould syndrome, a variable and clinically heterogenous multisystem disorder generally characterized by the presence of cerebrovascular disease with ocular, renal, and muscular manifestations. We have previously identified elevated TGFβ signaling as a pathological insult resulting from Col4a1 mutations and demonstrated that reducing TGFβ signaling ameliorate ocular and cerebrovascular phenotypes in Col4a1 mutant mouse models of Gould syndrome. In this study, we describe the first characterization of skeletal defects in Col4a1 mutant mice that include a developmental delay in osteogenesis and structural, biomechanical and vascular alterations of mature bones. Using distinct mouse models, we show that allelic heterogeneity influences the presentation of skeletal pathology resulting from Col4a1 mutations. Importantly, we found that TGFβ target gene expression is elevated in developing bones from Col4a1 mutant mice and show that genetically reducing TGFβ signaling partially ameliorates skeletal manifestations. Collectively, these findings identify a novel and unsuspected role for type IV collagen in bone biology, expand the spectrum of manifestations associated with Gould syndrome to include skeletal abnormalities, and implicate elevated TGFβ signaling in skeletal pathogenesis in Col4a1 mutant mice. The progress of field research and studies of archaeological sites from southern Poland (Małopolska) and experimental activities related to salt-making in the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age in the last two decades have created conditions for attempting to recreate the chaîne opératoire of this branch of prehistoric production. The use of ceramic containers for evaporating brine and drying and portioning salt means that we are dealing with two operational sequences (production of ceramics and salt) intertwined at some stage – from obtaining raw materials (clay and brine) to the distribution of transportable product and discarding of disposable containers. We conducted multi-aspect studies on the characteristics of materials related to each stage, including their spatial location, based on all available material from western Małopolska, in particular several large-scale benchmark sites (Podłęże 17, Brzezie 17 and Kraków-Bieżanów 11). This allowed us to identify certain differences in production sites. A comprehensive review of the source database also allowed us to establish a rather limited scope of both the degree of craft specialisation of the brewers and the scale of the centre’s influence. Nevertheless, in some periods, as in the beginning of the Urnfield period, this centre gained supra-regional importance, as evidenced by, among others, certificates of weight standardization of finished products. Hydrazones display an interesting profile of biological activities, which includes mainly antimicrobial and antiproliferative properties. Hydrazones also play an important role in the synthesis of heterocyclic rings and in coordination chemistry. Currently, the synthesis of complexes of hydrazones with transition metals is quite frequently reported in the scientific literature. The interest in this topic is largely due to diverse biological activities of the metal complexes of hydrazones that in some cases are much more effective than hydrazones themselves. This review focuses on the complexes of hydrazones with transition metals which display antibacterial, antitubercular, antifungal and anticancer activities. In the following subchapters devoted to a given activity, an attempt has been made to present the most active complexes of hydrazones, their trends in their activity and application in medicinal chemistry. The paper presents the literature data from 2009 to 2023. This review constitutes a useful guide for the researchers who intend to synthesize and investigate complexes of hydrazones in terms of their antimicrobial and anticancer activities. This article reports on the development and validation of the Instrumental Practice Goal Realization Inventory (IPGRI) designed to assess the process of self-directed study, beginning with setting the intention to practice and ending with the evaluation of one’s performance. This new tool is based on the theoretical model of action phases. The IPGRI consists of 12 items and four scales delineating the phases of goal realization: Practice Intention, Planning, Acting, and Evaluating Practice. We describe the conceptualization and development of the measure. The evaluation of its psychometric properties is based on two samples: 171 piano students and 235 students learning various instruments. They participated in three measurements, each spaced two weeks apart. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses performed on the two samples indicate that the four-factor structure of the IPGRI is a good representation of the realization of instrumental practice goals. A high reliability (internal consistency and test-retest stability) of the scales was observed. We also provide evidence for convergent, discriminant, construct, and known-group validity. The IPGRI is a short and multidimensional measure with good psychometric properties. Therefore, it may be used both in research and practice in the psychology of music and music education. The search for new technologies and related new biological materials for use in the cosmetics industry requires many studies and analyses of not only chemical but also physical properties. This study attempts to assess the properties of soap produced with the addition of crushed hazelnut shells. This additive is intended to improve the friction properties of the soap, which in turn enhances the quality of removing impurities from the skin. Friction tests for wet and dry skin were performed on an appropriately designed measuring station using the Texture Analyser XT plus device. The obtained results indicate an increase in dynamic friction value compared to the control sample. This article attempts to describe traditional Polish finger games. The constitutive features of the genre of finger play are indicated, as well as the positive impact of the accompanying words on both the linguistic and motor development of young children. The main part of the article is the presentation of the most popular of the Polish texts, 'Tu sroczka kaszkę warzyła ...' ('Here little magpie cooked porridge ...'). This study provides a basic ethnolinguistic analysis of the variants of this text and demonstrates that this finger game has a pan-Slavic character. The article also briefly discusses other similar texts that are popular in Poland. The data that form the basis of this study were collected by the author in 2012–2017 during research in southern Poland, mainly in the Małopolska region, and in 2021 in Podkarpacie province, along with material from anthologies covering all of Poland and from folklore archives. Background: In May 2019, liver transplant (LT) allocation policy changed to limit MELD exception points for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to median MELD at transplant minus three (MMaT‐3). We evaluated this policy's impact on waitlist outcomes for HCC candidates, by race and ethnicity, hypothesizing that the introduction of the MMaT‐3 reduced inequities in waitlist outcomes. Methods: Retrospective cohort study of the Scientific Registry for Transplant Recipients, including all adult LT candidates (N = 10 751) who received HCC exception points from May 17, 2017 to May 18, 2019 (pre‐policy; N = 6627) to May 19, 2019 to March 1, 2021 (post‐policy; N = 4124). We compared incidence of LT and waitlist removal for death or becoming too sick pre‐ and post‐policy for non‐Hispanic White, non‐Hispanic Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and Asian patients using competing risk regression adjusted for candidate characteristics. Results: One‐year cumulative incidence of LT decreased significantly pre‐/post‐policy among White (77.4% vs. 64.5%; p <.01) and Black (76.2% vs. 63.1%; p <.01) candidates only, while a 1‐year incidence of death/non‐LT waitlist removal decreased significantly only among Hispanics (13.4% vs. 7.5%; p <.01). After covariate adjustment, the effect of the policy change was a significantly decreased incidence of LT for White (SHR:.63 compared to pre‐policy; p <.001), Black (SHR:.62; p <.001), and Asian (SHR:.68; p =.002), but no change for Hispanic patients. Only Hispanic patients had a significant decrease in death/waitlist removal after the policy change (SHR:.69; p =.04). Compared to White patients in the pre‐policy era, Hispanic (SHR:.88, p <.007) and Asian candidates (SHR:.72; p <.001) had lower unadjusted incidence of LT. This disparity was mitigated in the post‐policy era where Hispanic patients had higher likelihood of LT than Whites (SHR: 1.22; p =.002). For the outcome of death/non‐LT waitlist removal, the only significant difference was a 42% lower incidence of waitlist removal for Asian compared to White patients in the post‐policy era (SHR:.58; p =.03). Conclusion: Among LT recipients with HCC, racial/ethnic subpopulations were differentially affected by the MMAT‐3 policy, resulting in a post‐policy reduction of some of the previous disparities. 46,XX individuals born with severely masculinized genitals due to congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) who have been assigned male at birth and reared male can successfully establish a male gender identity/role, find employment, marry, function sexually with a female partner, and develop positive mental health status. While there were a few individuals who reportedly did not fare well or who changed gender to female, the majority of those identifying as males appear to have an overall good quality of life. Parental/family support, along with the support of others, appears essential to a positive outcome as a male, or as a female. This paper suggests that serious consideration should be given to male gender assignment and rearing and, in certain situations, is justified. Disorders of sex differentiation teams should inform parents about the option for male assignment and rearing in 46,XX CAH infants with severe genital masculinization, which is a rare condition. To provide this option is concordant with the principles of ethics, transparency and with the Endocrine Society Guidelines and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ policy of fully informed consent. (1) Background: Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common comorbidity of TS that adds further impairment. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) has shown efficacy in treating tics, yet its effectiveness in individuals with TS and comorbid ADHD remains unclear. Also, it is suggested that ADHD characteristics like executive dysfunction and inattention could hinder the response to CBT. This study aims to compare the response to CBT for tics and its maintenance six months post-therapy among TS individuals with and without ADHD symptoms. (2) Methods: In this study, 55 TS participants who completed 14-week CBT for tics were split into high (TS+) or low (TS−) ADHD symptomatology groups. Outcomes were evaluated using the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) regarding global tic severity and motor and vocal tic frequency post-CBT and at a 6-month follow-up. (3) Results: No significant group difference was found regarding improvements post-CBT (n = 55), nor the maintenance six months later (n = 45). (4) Conclusions: ADHD symptoms may not hinder the response to CBT or its maintenance, suggesting that TS individuals with ADHD symptoms may not require specialized CBT interventions. Human health is dependent on food safety and, therefore, on the health of farm animals. One of the most significant threats in regard to swine diseases is African swine fever (ASF). Infections caused by porcine circoviruses (PCVs) represent another important swine disease. Due to the ubiquitous nature of PCV2, it is not surprising that this virus has been detected in ASFV-affected pigs. However, recent data indicate that coinfection of PCV3 and ASFV also occurs. It is still unclear whether PCV infection plays a role in ASFV infection, and that subject requires further analysis. The aim of this study was to assess whether PCV3 and PCV4 are present in the wild boar population in Poland (real-time PCR). The analysis was performed on wild boar samples collected for routine ASF surveillance in Poland, between 2018 and 2021. By extension, the obtained data were compared in regard to ASFV presence in these samples, thus investigating the odds of ASFV infection on the grounds of the PCV carrier state in free-ranging Suidae in Poland. In addition, sequencing of PCV3 and phylogenetic analysis were performed, based on a full genome and a capsid gene. In the current study, we demonstrated the high prevalence of PCV3 in the wild boar population in Poland; meanwhile, PCV4 was not detected. The odds of ASFV infection on the grounds of the PCV3 carrier state in free-ranging Suidae in Poland was more than twice as high. Ten full genome sequences of PCV3 were obtained, all of them belonging to clade 3a. The similarity between them was in the range of 98.78–99.80%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The temperature dependency of kinetic parameters in p-PbTe and p-CdTe thin films formed on glass substrates has been investigated. The surface mobility of current carriers in PbTe films was computed as a function of temperature under the assumption of diffuse scattering of charge carriers. The mechanisms of intergranular current carrier transfer related with thermoelectronic emission are established. The aim of this study was to determine the microbiological stability and changes occurring in selected physicochemical properties of raw pork sausages during hyperbaric storage at subzero temperature (HS-ST). It was shown that storage at moderate pressures (up to 111 MPa) led to a reduction in microbial populations. After 21 days of storage under these conditions, no microorganisms were detected in the samples. Additionally, the inhibition of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) formation was observed under HS-ST conditions. The negative effect of the storage at 111 MPa/-10°C was the sausage colour change from pink to grey-pink or grey, visible to the naked eye. Such changes did not occur in the samples stored at 60 MPa/-5°C for 35 days. The results showed that applying HS-ST at 60 MPa/-5°C allowed the shelf-life of raw pork sausages to be effectively extended by at least 35 days without visible quality deterioration. Quinqueserialis quinqueserialis (Trematoda: Notocotilidae) is a widespread species in the Holarctic that parasitizes the cecum of the muskrat. The results of micromorphological studies of parenchymal organs of the muskrat at a high intensity of invasion by Q. quinqueserialis are presented for the first time. In infected muskrats, activation of the B-cell and macrophage components of the immune system was established against the background of inhibition of granulocytic reactions in the spleen. Various types of dystrophies were detected in the liver, and, with the formation of functional maladjustment of the organ, inflammatory changes were recorded in the kidneys with signs of alterative, necrobiotic processes. The development of destructive pathomorphological processes indicates the participation of trematodes in the pathogenesis of this parasitosis. The obtained data provide new information for understanding the functions of the lymphoid and parenchymal organs in wild rodents with trematodosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(1) Background. The aim of the present protocol is to assess whether self-perception of tooth colour and facial attractiveness correlates with gender and mood state. (2) Study protocol. The protocol foresees a cross-sectional clinical study, developed by Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, Department of Oral and MaxilloFacial Sciences, and 15 UNID (Unione Nazionale Igienisti Dentali-National Union of Dental Hygienists)-affiliated clinical centers in Italy. The protocol consists of a clinical visit, during which photographic documentation of the face and smile is collected with spectrophotometric evaluation of tooth colour. During the visit, two validated questionnaires are filled in. The first one is filled by the operator for the collection of data on: i) patient's face and smile colorimetric characteristics; ii) patient's and operator's evaluations of the dental colour and smile attractiveness. The second one is completed by the patient for the assessment of his/her mood state. (3) Conclusions. This protocol highlights the importance in aesthetic dentistry of a gender-specific approach and the limitations of gender-neutral models, revealing the existing gender differences in aesthetic self-perception. In addition, the colour-matching relationships between facial and dental colour characteristics will be explored. This approach improves the accuracy and personalization of aesthetic assessments in dentistry, by addressing personalized and gender-specific needs. The paper defines the concept of an information graph and proposes its use to describe information links and analyze the information flow in any organization regarding information security. Research on information graphs in this aspect should be developed, especially in identifying "dangerous graph structures" such as the Hamiltonian graphs or cliques. Information graphs containing such a structure as a Hamilton cycle can be analyzed using results from the theory of finding and existence of Hamilton cycles, an essential branch of graph theory. Abstract—A theoretical formalism has been developed to calculate the electromagnetic fields generated in the atmosphere–ionosphere system by a finite-length underground horizontal current source. A numerical model with a realistic profile of the ionosphere in a vertical geomagnetic field has been constructed based on this theory. It is shown that the apparent impedance of the electromagnetic field produced by an underground source on the Earth surface is an order of magnitude higher than the Earth impedance; this can be used to discriminate perturbations from seismogenic sources. The presented results of numerical modeling allow us to relate perturbations created by a large-scale underground source in the magnetic field of the Earth surface and in the electric field in the ionosphere. Based on these model estimates, it is concluded that many of the ULF electric field perturbations detected in satellite data prior to earthquakes cannot be attributed to direct emission from seismogenic sources. Background. This study examines the prevalence and underlying factors of loneliness among Polish adolescents in schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objectives. The aim of this study is to assess the frequency of loneliness experienced by Polish students depending on the perceived impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on various aspects of life. Material and methods. Utilizing data from a representative sample of over 6,200 students aged 11 to 17, as part of the global Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey for the 2021/2022 school year, the study investigates how the pandemic has affected the lives of young people, particularly in fostering feelings of loneliness. Results. The findings indicate that almost one-third of Polish school students report feeling lonely “often” or “always”. Key factors contributing to this loneliness include gender, age, the level of support from family and peers, as well as the amount of time spent on social media. Notably, the study uncovers that girls are more likely to feel lonely – especially those in secondary school and living in larger cities. There is also a noticeable link between heavy social media usage and heightened loneliness. Conclusions. The pandemic’s toll on mental health, family dynamics, and academic life has emerged as a significant concern. This paper underscores the urgent need for dedicated programs and support mechanisms to counteract the adverse effects of the pandemic on the mental health and overall well-being of young people. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a complex metabolic disorder that has short- and long-term effects on maternal and offspring health. This study aimed to assess the impact of maternal hyperglycemia severity, classified as GDM-G1 (diet treatment) and GDM-G2 (insulin treatment) on colostral appetite-regulating molecules. Colostrum samples were collected from hyperglycemic (N = 30) and normoglycemic (N = 21) mothers, and the concentrations of milk hormones were determined by immunoenzymatic assay. A difference was found for milk ghrelin, but not for molecules such as adiponectin, leptin, resistin, or IGF-I levels, in relation to maternal hyperglycemia. The colostral ghrelin in the GDM-G1 cohort (0.21 ng/mL) was significantly lower than for GDM-G2 (0.38 ng/mL) and non-GDM groups (0.36 ng/mL). However, colostral resistin was higher, but not significantly, for GDM-G1 (13.33 ng/mL) and GDM-G2 (12.81 ng/mL) cohorts than for normoglycemic mothers (7.89 ng/mL). The lack of difference in relation to hyperglycemia for milk leptin, adiponectin, leptin–adiponectin ratio, resistin, and IGF-I levels might be the outcome of effective treatment of GDM during pregnancy. The shift between ghrelin and other appetite-regulating hormones might translate into altered ability to regulate energy balance, affecting offspring's metabolic homeostasis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of this Article is to take a broader perspective on the lessons which can be learned from the implementation of automated decision-making in the public sector--specifically in regard to how procedural rule of law mechanisms can make such projects trustworthy. The underlying idea behind this Article is to posit the debate about the ADM within the context of rule of law as a key notion in liberal democracies. At the same time, we rely on a law and political economy framework. We look through the lens of power relations and assess to what extent selected procedural solutions governing ADM systems in the public sector support democratization and equality. Our paper is case-specific but aims to offer broader lessons. It takes as a point of departure the Random Allocation of Cases System implemented in Poland and aims to show that the lessons learned from this case have more universal character. Indeed, the case from Poland is useful to demonstrate that specific safeguards and measures concerning transparency and accountability of ADM should not be perceived separately from the broader regulatory context. The text consists of five Parts. In Part II we briefly indicate the significance of procedural rule of law safeguards and their importance for trustworthiness of the state. In Part III we describe our case study, RACS, used in Poland for allocating cases to judges. In Part IV we provide an overview of lessons that can be learned from the implementation of RACS in regard to the significance of more general procedural rules which are crucial for ensuring trustworthy implementation of ADM. BACKGROUND Compensatory health beliefs may serve as one of many selfregulatory strategies that individuals employ to maintain healthy lifestyles. Past research with samples from a general population has shown, however, that compensatory beliefs are ineffective in this regard and may even lead to inaction in future health-related behaviors such as eating healthily or being active. To better understand this phenomenon, in the present study, changes in compensatory health beliefs regarding various life domains were examined in a group of pregnant women. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE In a longitudinal study design, 166 women completed questionnaires in the first (t1), the second (t2), and the third (t3) trimester of their pregnancies. We assessed the level of their self-control as a trait (t1, t2, t3), compensatory health beliefs (t1, t2, t3), and unhealthy snacking (t3). RESULTS As predicted, self-control as a trait decreased and the levels of compensatory beliefs increased over time. A linear mixed effects analysis showed that self-control was the best predictor of compensatory beliefs in the third trimester. Finally, compensatory health beliefs in the third trimester mediated the effect of self-control at the beginning of pregnancy on unhealthy snacking in the third trimester. CONCLUSIONS It appears important to support pregnant women in opting for constructive self-regulatory strategies, especially in their final trimesters, when coping resources are exhausted by the challenges of this period. Electric vehicles are increasingly appearing on Polish roads due to a number of technical, legal and marketing conditions. However, electromobility is developing primarily in urban areas, mainly due to the unevenly developed infrastructure for charging vehicle batteries and the power grid. Therefore, solutions should be created that use the existing power infrastructure, including the use of railway power infrastructure (RPI). The railway power network covers a significant part of the country, including forest areas, and, above all, it very often intersects with road infrastructure or runs along roads. This paper raises issues related to the possibility of using RPI to charge the batteries of electric vehicles. After characterizing the technical, operational and legal requirements related to these technical systems, a concept of an electric vehicle charging system using RPI was developed, along with a demonstration of the possibility of its implementation, which was simulated using mathematical models developed by the authors. Introduction: The use of meshes in mastectomies with immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) has become the gold standard. Aim: The use of meshes in mastectomies with immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) has become a gold standard. The purpose of the study was to analyze the complications and own experience with the use of Serasynth fully absorbable and SeragynBR partially absorbable synthetic meshes. Material and methods: In the period from December 2017 to July 2020, 118 IBR were performed in the Author's Department with the use of SeragynBR and Serasynth meshes in 93 patients operated for breast cancer. 78 Serasynth meshes (Group 1) and 40 SeragynBR meshes (Group 2) were implanted. Results: The most common complication was persistent seroma collection, which was reported in 17.9% of cases in Group 1 and 25% in Group 2. Skin inflammation was reported in 7.6% and 17.5%, while infections in 2.5% and 5% of the operated breasts in Group 1 and Group 2. Reoperation was required in 5.1% and 5% of the patients in Group 1 and Group 2. The percentage of complications was lower when Serasynth rather than Seragyn BR meshes were implanted. The frequent incidence of the seroma collection did not contribute in any significant way to serious complications such as removal of mesh/implant or infection. The complications, which developed following the implantation of both mesh types, were similar to those presented in other publications concerning mastectomy with IBR with the use of synthetic meshes. The percentage of implant losses/explanations in the discussed groups was lower than that reported in the literature. Conclusion: Despite the complications, both types of meshes can be considered as safe additions to reconstructive breast surgeries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Heart transplantation (HT) is the only option for most patients with end‐stage heart failure and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) who fail medical therapy. Data on the long‐term outcomes post‐transplant in HCM individuals remain scarce. Methods: We analyzed data of 319 adult patients who underwent HT between 1984 and 2019. Patients were followed for cardiac allograft rejection, cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV), death, or re‐transplantation. Results: Outcomes of 24 patients with HCM, 160 with ischemic, and 135 with dilated cardiomyopathy were compared. During a mean follow‐up of 11.6 ± 7.2 (max 27.8), 16.7 ± 8.2 (max 32.7), and 16.1 ± 9.7 (max 34.6) years after HT in hypertrophic, ischemic, and dilated cardiomyopathy groups, respectively: 10‐year survival rate was 67%, 62%, 69%, respectively (p =.04). Post‐transplantation, HCM individuals more often than the other two studied groups required prolonged inotropic support (37%, 12%, 17%, respectively, p =.02), temporary mechanical circulatory support (45%, 13%, 14%, respectively, p <.01), and renal replacement therapy immediately post‐HT (55%, 19%, 24%, respectively, p <.01). No significant inter‐group differences were noted in the 10‐year freedom from acute allograft rejection (38%, 46%, 43%, respectively, p =.38) or 10‐year freedom from CAV (88%, 78%, 81%, respectively, p =.57). Conclusions: The long‐term post‐transplant prognosis of adult patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is favorable despite more challenging immediate post‐HT course. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previously obtained amphiphilic graft copolymers based on [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (TMAMA) ionic liquid were used as the matrices of three types of nanocarriers, i.e., conjugates with ionic piperacillin (PIP) and micelles with tazobactam (TAZ), which represented single systems, and dual systems bearing PIP anions and encapsulated TAZ for co-delivery. The exchange of Cl anions in TMAMA units with PIP ones resulted in a yield of 45.6–72.7 mol.%. The self-assembling properties were confirmed by the critical micelle concentration (CMC), which, after ion exchange, increased significantly (from 0.011–0.020 mg/mL to 0.041–0.073 mg/mL). The amphiphilic properties were beneficial for TAZ encapsulation to reach drug loading contents (DLCs) in the ranges of 37.2–69.5 mol.% and 50.4–80.4 mol.% and to form particles with sizes of 97–319 nm and 24–192 nm in the single and dual systems, respectively. In vitro studies indicated that the ionically conjugated drug (PIP) was released in quantities of 66–81% (7.8–15.0 μg/mL) from single-drug systems and 21–25% (2.6–3.9 μg/mL) from dual-drug systems. The release of encapsulated TAZ was more efficient, achieving 47–98% (7.5–9.0 μg/mL) release from the single systems and 47–69% (9.6–10.4 μg/mL) release from the dual ones. Basic cytotoxicity studies showed non-toxicity of the polymer matrices, while the introduction of the selected drugs induced cytotoxicity against normal human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) with the increase in concentration. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive type of brain cancer, with a poor prognosis. GBM cells, which develop in the environment of neural tissue, often exploit neurotransmitters and their receptors to promote their own growth and invasion. Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), which play a crucial role in central nervous system signal transmission, are widely represented in the brain, and GBM cells express several subtypes of nAChRs that are suggested to transmit signals from neurons, promoting tumor invasion and growth. Analysis of published GBM transcriptomes revealed spatial heterogeneity in nAChR subtype expression, and functional nAChRs of α1*, α7, and α9 subtypes are demonstrated in our work on several patient-derived GBM microsphere cultures and on the U87MG GBM cell line using subtype-selective neurotoxins and fluorescent calcium mobilization assay. The U87MG cell line shows reactions to nicotinic agonists similar to those of GBM patient-derived culture. Selective α1*, α7, and α9 nAChR neurotoxins stimulated cell growth in the presence of nicotinic agonists. Several cultivating conditions with varying growth factor content have been proposed and tested. The use of selective neurotoxins confirmed that cell cultures obtained from patients are representative GBM models, but the use of media containing fetal bovine serum can lead to alterations in nAChR expression and functioning. In this article, we show how the European Union styles itself as the sole political actor able to effectively protect its citizens from the threats engendered by new technologies while balancing the relations between digital markets and the member states through ground-breaking regulations. To this end, we trace manifestations of this approach within the proposed Artificial Intelligence Act. We argue that the Act, while evoking the value of fundamental rights protection, does not support genuine emancipation of citizens in the digital world, as it hands over the issue of protection to expert bodies and institutions. The European Union's unique approach to regulation of the digital economy does not reflect the triple movement postulated in Nancy Fraser's critique of Karl Polanyi's double movement as it does not include solutions that would allow the societal actors to enforce their rights concerning artificial intelligence.
