Background: X‐linked dystrophin‐deficient muscular dystrophy (MD) is a form of MD caused by variants in the DMD gene. It is a fatal disease characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of skeletal muscles. Hypothesis/Objectives: Identify deleterious genetic variants in DMD by whole‐genome sequencing (WGS) using a next‐generation sequencer. Animals: One MD‐affected cat, its parents, and 354 cats from a breeding colony. Methods: We compared the WGS data of the affected cat with data available in the National Center for Biotechnology Information database and searched for candidate high‐impact variants by in silico analyses. Next, we confirmed the candidate variants by Sanger sequencing using samples from the parents and cats from the breeding colony. We used 2 genome assemblies, the standard felCat9 (from an Abyssinian cat) and the novel AnAms1.0 (from an American Shorthair cat), to evaluate genome assembly differences. Results: We found 2 novel high‐impact variants: a 1‐bp deletion in felCat9 and an identical nonsense variant in felCat9 and AnAms1.0. Whole genome and Sanger sequencing validation showed that the deletion in felCat9 was a false positive because of misassembly. Among the 357 cats, the nonsense variant was only found in the affected cat, which indicated it was a de novo variant. Conclusion and Clinical Importance: We identified a de novo variant in the affected cat and next‐generation sequencing‐based genotyping of the whole DMD gene was determined to be necessary for affected cats because the parents of the affected cat did not have the risk variant. In recent years, there is growing evidence of associations between antibodies against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) and several phenotypes of acute inflammatory demyelinating diseases such as acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), optic neuritis, brainstem, and cerebral cortical encephalitis, called MOG antibody associated disorders (MOGAD). Monophasic course is known in about half of cases especially in pediatric onset ADEM and optic neuritis, mainly in cases with transient positivity of MOG antibody. Pathological features of MOGAD are considered as acute demyelinating lesions with CD4 dominant cell infiltrations, the deposition of humoral immunity, perivascular inflammation and perivenous demyelination, which is distinct from multiple sclerosis. Now the diagnosis of MOGAD is based on the international panel criteria of MOGAD launched in 2023, which the diagnostic frameworks are three parts, including MOGAD‐specific clinical features, MOG antibody positivity, and the exclusion of other diseases. The prognosis of MOGAD patients is considered relatively mild, but the problem is refractory relapsing cases. For its prevention, there are no approved drugs, but oral tapering corticosteroids, immunosuppressants such as azathioprine and mycophenolic mofetil, rituximab, and the maintenance intravenous immunoglobulin are recommended, and now there are a few clinical trials of promising biological drugs already approved in other neurological disorders. For two adjacent buildings connected by a joint damper, an inverse problem is formulated based on the pole allocation method in control theory. The structural system is simplified as a two-degrees-of-freedom (2-DOF) lumped-mass damped shear model. The unified governing equation, which expresses the relationship between an assigned control target and the structural parameters for an earthquake-resistant building, seismically isolated building, or passively controlled building, is extended to structural control using a joint damper. The introduced equation automatically constrains the variations in the structural parameters under the assigned modal properties. The integration of the pole allocation method and fixed-point theory directly estimates the additional damping effect on the target buildings from the optimum capacity of the joint damper, which improves the trial-and-error steps at the preliminary design stage. The past fixed-point theories do not provide the additional damping effect but the optimum damping coefficient of the joint damper. The present study directly links the additional damping with the damping of the joint damper. Numerical examples are used to verify the theoretical integration using a 20-DOF building model wherein two 10-DOF models are connected by a joint damper between the top lumped masses. The spectrum of MOG-IgG-associated disease (MOGAD) includes optic neuritis (ON), myelitis (MY), acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), brainstem encephalitis, cerebral cortical encephalitis (CE) and AQP4-IgG-negative neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). In MOGAD, MOG-IgG are usually detected in sera (MOG-IgGSERUM), but there have been some seronegative MOGAD cases with MOG-IgG in CSF (MOG-IgGCSF), and its diagnostic implications remains unclear. In this cross-sectional study, we identified patients with paired serum and CSF sent from all over Japan for testing MOG-IgG. Two investigators blinded to MOG-IgG status classified them into suspected MOGAD (ADEM, CE, NMOSD, ON, MY and Others) or not based on the current recommendations. The MOG-IgGSERUM and MOG-IgGCSF titres were assessed with serial 2-fold dilutions to determine end point titres [≥1:128 in serum and ≥1:1 (no dilution) in CSF were considered positive]. We analysed the relationship between MOG-IgGSERUM, MOG-IgGCSF and the phenotypes with multivariable regression. A total of 671 patients were tested [405 with suspected MOGAD, 99 with multiple sclerosis, 48 with AQP4-IgG-positive NMOSD and 119 with other neurological diseases (OND)] before treatment. In suspected MOGAD, 133 patients (33%) tested MOG-IgG-positive in serum and/or CSF; 94 (23%) double-positive (ADEM 36, CE 15, MY 8, NMOSD 9, ON 15 and Others 11); 17 (4.2%) serum-restricted-positive (ADEM 2, CE 0, MY 3, NMOSD 3, ON 5 and Others 4); and 22 (5.4%) CSF-restricted-positive (ADEM 3, CE 4, MY 6, NMOSD 2, ON 0 and Others 7). None of AQP4-IgG-positive NMOSD, multiple sclerosis or OND cases tested positive for MOG-IgGSERUM, but two with multiple sclerosis cases were MOG-IgGCSF-positive; the specificities of MOG-IgGSERUM and MOG-IgGCSF in suspected MOGAD were 100% [95% confidence interval (CI) 99–100%] and 99% (95% CI 97–100%), respectively. Unlike AQP4-IgG-positive NMOSD, the correlation between MOG-IgGSERUM and MOG-IgGCSF titres in MOGAD was weak. Multivariable regression analyses revealed MOG-IgGSERUM was associated with ON and ADEM, whereas MOG-IgGCSF was associated with ADEM and CE. The number needed to test for MOG-IgGCSF to diagnose one additional MOGAD case was 13.3 (14.3 for ADEM, 2 for CE, 19.5 for NMOSD, infinite for ON, 18.5 for MY and 6.1 for Others). In terms of MOG-IgGSERUM/CSF status, most cases were double-positive while including either serum-restricted (13%) or CSF-restricted (17%) cases. These statuses were independently associated with clinical phenotypes, especially in those with ON in serum and CE in CSF, suggesting pathophysiologic implications and the utility of preferential diagnostic testing. Background: Research on school maladjustment has increasingly focused on social skills, such as the ability to control emotions, collaborate with others, and achieve goals. Social and emotional learning (SEL) is one approach to nurturing social skills. However, few preventive interventions to promote SEL have been conducted among young children, particularly in Asian countries, including Japan. Therefore, this study examined the effectiveness of an SEL program—Fun FRIENDS—among children in Japan. Methods: In mid-2022, the Fun FRIENDS program was administered to 115 children aged 4–5 years, who were enrolled in two kindergartens. The program was administered to the entire class as part of their kindergarten activities. The control group included 93 children in three kindergartens. This study included 94 participants (81.7%) in the intervention group and 66 (71.0%) in the control group, whose parents agreed with the assessment of their skills. Fun FRIENDS is a support program based on a cognitive–behavioral approach. The program aims to teach children how to cope with anxiety and stress and develop resilience and confidence to face difficulties. The program includes 10 sessions, each lasting approximately 1 h and conducted once per week. To examine the program's effectiveness, teachers evaluated these children's social skills before and after program implementation using the Social Skill Scale. Results: Results showed significant post-intervention improvements in self-control and cooperation scores among children in the intervention group, compared with pre-intervention. Further, post-intervention self-control and cooperation scores were significantly higher among children in the intervention group than the control group. Conclusions: SEL implemented on a class-wide basis could be effective in early childhood. An early approach targeting preschool-aged children is necessary to prevent school maladjustment. Simple Summary: The present study aims to establish a method of whole mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing for domestic dogs. Prior to proceeding with the experiment, the collection of relevant DNA samples was essential. Therefore, we decided to use oral mucosa DNA, which can be collected non-invasively. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed using the DNA collected from six dogs raised in Japan and four primer pairs as specific to the mtDNA, after which the amplified products were sequenced using next-generation sequencing. As a result, the whole mtDNA obtained from all dogs was correctly sequenced. Thus, we determined that the method we used in our study may be useful for future research on dog-related medical care and welfare. In human beings, whole mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing has been widely used in many research fields, including medicine, forensics, and genetics. With respect to the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris), which is commonly recognized as being an additional member of the traditional human family structure, research studies on mtDNA should be developed to expand and improve our collective knowledge of dog medicine and welfare as it seems that there is still room for further development in these areas. Moreover, a simple and robust method for sequencing whole mtDNA that can be applied to various dog breeds has not yet been described in the literature. In the present study, we aim to establish such a method for the whole mtDNA sequencing of the domestic dog. In the experiments we conducted, oral mucosa DNA samples obtained from six Japanese domestic dogs were used as a template. We designed four primer pairs that could amplify approximately 5 kbp from each region of the mtDNA and validated several PCR conditions. Subsequently, the PCR amplicons were pooled and subjected to library preparation. The sequencing of the libraries was performed using next-generation sequencing (NGS), followed by bioinformatics analysis. Our results demonstrate that the proposed method can be used to perform highly accurate resequencing. Drug detection dogs play integral roles in society. However, the interplay between their behaviors and genetic characteristics underlying their performance remains uninvestigated. Herein, more than 120,000 genetic variants were evaluated in 326 German Shepherd or Labrador Retriever dogs to profile the genetic traits associated with various behavioral traits related to the successful training of drug detection dogs. Behavioral breed differences were observed in ‘friendliness to humans’ and ‘tolerance to dogs.’ A genome-wide association study within both breeds identified 11 regions potentially associated with drug detection dog characteristics as well as ‘interest in the target’ and ‘friendliness to humans,’ which are related to drug detection abilities. Among them, 63 protein-coding genes, including Atat1 and Pfn2 known to be associated with anxiety-related or exploration behavior in mice, respectively, were located surrounding the identified candidate polymorphisms. This study highlights genetic characteristics associated with behavioral traits that are important for the successful training of drug detection dogs. Summary: For a building with a passive control system, an inverse problem is formulated based on the pole allocation method in control theory. The structural system is simplified as a three‐degree‐of‐freedom lumped‐mass damped shear model. Through the selection of approximate model parameters, the simplified model can represent an earthquake‐resistant structure, a base‐isolated structure, an inter‐storey‐isolated structure, or a controlled structure with a tuned mass damper or viscous dampers. The natural frequencies and corresponding damping ratios in the three vibration modes are set as the initial control targets for the performance‐based design. The newly introduced closed‐form expression explains how the model parameters are related to the control target and generally proves the trade‐off relationship in the passive control effect. Detecting high-risk patients for early rehospitalization is crucial in heart failure patient care. An association of albuminuria with cardiovascular events is well known. However, its predictive impact on rehospitalization for acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) remains unknown. In this study, 190 consecutive patients admitted due to ADHF between 2017 and April 2019 who underwent urinalysis were enrolled. Among them, 140 patients from whom urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) was measured with spot urine samples on admission were further analyzed. The association between UACR and rehospitalization due to HF during 1 year after discharge was evaluated. The mean age of 140 participants was 77.6 years and 55% were men. Only 18% (n = 25) of patients presented with normoalbuminuria (UACR < 30 mg/g∙creatinine), whereas 59% (n = 83) and 23% (n = 32) showed microalbuminuria (UACR 30–300 mg/g·creatinine) and macroalbuminuria (UACR > 300 mg/g·creatinine), respectively. The level of UACR on admission was correlated with the risk of subsequent rehospitalization due to HF (p = 0.017). The receiver operating characteristic analysis indicated that the best cut-off values for the UACR and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels to predict ADHF rehospitalization were 50 mg/g·creatinine and 824 pg/ml, respectively. When the patients were divided into four groups using both cut-off values, the individual predictive impacts of UACR and BNP on rehospitalization were comparable. Patients with both elevated UACR and BNP levels had a higher rate of HF rehospitalization than those with elevated BNP levels alone (p < 0.05). The combination of both values enabled more accurate prediction of HF rehospitalization than BNP levels alone. In conclusion, UACR could be a new useful biomarker to predict HF rehospitalization in patients with ADHF, especially in combination with the levels of BNP, and should be further evaluated in a prospective study. In clinical magnetic resonance imaging, gadolinium-based contrast agents are commonly used for detecting brain tumors and evaluating the extent of malignancy. We present a new method to evaluate relaxivity (r1) and contrast agent concentration separately in contrast-enhanced lesions using quantitative parameter mapping (QPM). Furthermore, we also aimed to estimate the extracellular pH (pHe) of tumor lesions. We demonstrated that it is possible to evaluate pathophysiological tumor changes due to therapeutic efficacy by measuring r1 in contrast-enhanced lesions. In this study, the primary brain tumor group showed significantly higher r1 values than other brain disease groups (P < 0.001). Moreover, mean pHe value showed a trend for tumor malignancy having a lower pHe value and primary brain tumor having a significantly lower pHe than other brain diseases (P < 0.001). Our results might suggest that QPM can separately quantify r1 and CA concentration in brain tumors and that pHe brain tumor mapping could serve as a tumor biomarker. DNA methylation plays important functions in gene expression regulation that is involved in individual development and various diseases. DNA methylation has been well studied in human and model organisms, but only limited data exist in companion animals like dog. Using methylation-sensitive restriction enzyme-based next generation sequencing (Canine DREAM), we obtained canine DNA methylation maps of 16 somatic tissues from two dogs. In total, we evaluated 130,861 CpG sites. The majority of CpG sites were either highly methylated (> 70%, 52.5–64.6% of all CpG sites analyzed) or unmethylated (< 30%, 22.5–28.0% of all CpG sites analyzed) which are methylation patterns similar to other species. The overall methylation status of CpG sites across the 32 methylomes were remarkably similar. However, the tissue types were clearly defined by principle component analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis with DNA methylome. We found 6416 CpG sites located closely at promoter region of genes and inverse correlation between DNA methylation and gene expression of these genes. Tameness is a major element of animal domestication and involves two components: motivation to approach humans (active tameness) and reluctance to avoid humans (passive tameness). To understand the behavioral and genetic mechanisms of active tameness in mice, we had previously conducted selective breeding for long durations of contact and heading toward human hands in an active tameness test using a wild‐derived heterogeneous stock. Although the study showed a significant increase in contacting and heading with the 12th generation of breeding, the effect on other behavioral indices related to tameness and change of gene expression levels underlying selective breeding was unclear. Here, we analyzed nine tameness‐related traits at a later stage of selective breeding and analyzed how gene expression levels were changed by the selective breeding. We found that five traits, including contacting and heading, showed behavioral change in the selective groups comparing to the control through the generations. Furthermore, we conducted cluster analyses to evaluate the relationships among the nine traits and found that contacting and heading combined in an independent cluster in the selected groups, but not in the control groups. RNA‐Seq of hippocampal tissue revealed differential expression of 136 genes between the selection and control groups, while the pathway analysis identified the networks associated with these genes. These results suggest that active tameness was hidden in the control groups but became apparent in the selected populations by selective breeding, potentially driven by changes in gene expression networks. Pedigreed cats have traditionally been mated with close relatives, which increases the risks for inbreeding depression and genetic disorders. We evaluated the genome-wide population structure and the degree of inbreeding of 1022 cats, including 13 pedigreed and two random bred populations from Japan and the USA, using single nucleotide polymorphism array-based data. Ancestry structure analysis revealed Japan's American Curl, Norwegian Forest, and Siamese cat populations were genetically distinct from their American counterparts. Furthermore, we found an ancestral genetic component shared between five pedigreed and random bred Japanese cats, suggesting the breeds were admixed with Japanese cats or cats of east Asian origin. Between-country differences in inbreeding estimates based on runs of homozygosity were found for Maine Coon, Siamese, and random bred cats. To reduce the risks of inbreeding depression and genetic disorders, particularly for highly inbred breeds, such as Abyssinian cats, as well as Russian Blue and Siamese cats in the USA, appropriate breeding practices must be observed, including mating practices that increase the genetic diversity. • We evaluated the genetic structure of pedigreed and random-bred cat populations. • Some Japanese breeds were genetically distinct from their American counterparts. • Certain pedigreed breeds were admixed with cats of Japanese or East Asian origin. • We highlight the risks of inbreeding depression for highly inbred Abyssinians. An S‐shaped double azahelicene (1) was synthesized in excellent yield by a palladium‐catalyzed double dehydrogenative C−H coupling reaction. The stereochemistry of 1 was confirmed to be dl by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis. Selective formation of dl‐1 was attributed to the isomerization of the kinetically controlled product (meso‐1) into the more thermodynamically stable dl‐1 under the applied reaction conditions. dl‐1 can coordinate to palladium(II) in a bidentate trans‐chelating fashion, which was confirmed by X‐ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) as well as by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffuse reflectance (DR) UV/Vis, and far‐infrared (FIR) absorption spectroscopy. Theoretical calculations of palladium complex 16 revealed a weak attractive interaction between palladium and carbon atoms on the central dimethoxynaphthalene core, which could facilitate a disproportionation between a trans‐chelating (dl‐1)⋅PdCl2 complex and PdCl2 to form 16. Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytomas (PXAs) are rare low‐grade astrocytic tumors that typically present as superficial nodular cystic tumors of the cerebrum attached to the leptomeninx. Histologically, they are pleomorphic, hypercellular glial neoplasms. Despite the presence of microscopic pleomorphism, patients' postoperative prognosis is generally good. Anaplastic PXAs (APXAs) have a high mitotic index and patients with APXAs have a worse prognosis than patients with PXAs. Here, we report an autopsy case of APXA initially diagnosed as PXA. After gross total resection, the tumor recurred and was diagnosed as an APXA; thereafter, the patient died. An autopsy revealed that the tumor had relapsed at the primary site and had spread to the leptomeningeal space while concurrently invading the cerebrum including the periventricular area forming multifocal lesions. The histological findings of the autopsy were similar to those for epithelioid glioblastoma (EGBM) and small cell glioblastoma (SCGBM). In particular, the periventricular area with multifocal lesions was composed of SCGBM‐like cells. It has been shown that multifocal lesions are frequently identified in patients with SCGBM. This is the first histopathologically confirmed case of APXA‐related tumor presenting with periventricular extension and multifocal lesion formation. The periventricular extension might be a feature of PXAs and APXAs. However, suspected periventricular spread on imaging in past cases of PXAs and APXAs might instead represent the malignant transformation of these tumors to glioblastoma‐like high‐grade tumors, which often show SCGBM‐like histological patterns. A laser ion source can provide intense pulsed ion beams from a solid target. On the other hand, generation of a proton beam with a laser ion source requires using compound targets containing hydrogen. In this research, we demonstrated proton generation from three kinds of hydrocarbon polymer targets: polyethylene (C2H4)n, polypropylene (C3H6)n, and polystyrene (C8H8)n. The laser used was a Nd:YAG laser (532 nm/17 ns), and the energy was 0.2 J. The ion current and the fraction of ion species were measured using a Faraday cup and an electrostatic ion analyzer. The results indicated that the peak currents and fraction to total particle number of proton were similar for the different hydrocarbon polymer targets and also showed that increasing the laser intensity effectively increases the number of proton particles because the larger the laser intensity, the larger the total charge. Certain patient populations are unable to achieve the recommended low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol goals with statin monotherapy alone. Such patients may benefit from concomitant therapy with ezetimibe (EZE) 10 mg added on to a statin. To this end, fixed‐dose combination (FDC) tablets containing EZE 10 mg and rosuvastatin (ROS) 2.5 mg (EZE/ROS2.5) and EZE 10 mg and ROS 5 mg (EZE/ROS5) have been developed for treatment of hypercholesterolemia. The purpose of the series of clinical studies reported herein was to evaluate the potential food effect (MK‐0653H, protocol 836 (P836)) and the bioequivalence between FDC and co‐administration of EZE and ROS in healthy Japanese subjects under fasted and fed conditions (MK‐0653H, protocol 835 (P835) and MK‐0653H, protocol 846 (P846), respectively). These studies show there is no clinically relevant food effect on EZE exposure following single oral administration of the FDC EZE/ROS5 in healthy Japanese subjects; however, ROS exposure was decreased in the fed state under conditions used to evaluate the maximum food effect. Following single oral administration of individual ROS tablets under the same conditions, the magnitude of decrease in ROS exposure was comparable to that seen with FDC, suggesting that the effect of food on ROS exposure was similar between the FDC tablet and co‐administration of individual EZE and ROS tablets. Hybridization and backcrossing of native populations with introduced species can lead to introgression and genetic alteration. In this study, we evaluated introgression in 43 deer from a potential hybrid zone around Okinoshima Island, Kinki District, Japan. This region witnessed the migration of a hybrid population (cross between the Formosan sika deer [Cervus nippon taiouanus] and other deer species) that could potentially breed with the native Japanese sika deer (C. n. centralis). We used an existing genetic marker for the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and two novel markers for nuclear DNA, developed using publicly available next‐generation sequencing data. We identified one mainland deer with a mitochondrial haplotype identical to that of the Formosan sika deer as well as nuclear heterozygous sequences identical to those of Formosan and Japanese sika deer. This suggests that the mainland deer is a hybrid offspring of the Okinoshima population and native deer. However, only Japanese sika deer sequences were found in the other 42 samples, indicating limited introgression. Nevertheless, hybridization pre‐ and postintroduction in the Okinoshima population could cause multispecies introgression among Japanese sika deer, negatively affecting genetic integrity. We developed a simple test based on polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism to detect introgression in natural populations. Our method can accelerate genetic monitoring of Japanese sika deer in Kinki District. In conclusion, to prevent further introgression and maintain genetic integrity of Japanese sika deer, we recommend establishing fences around Okinoshima Island to limit migration, besides a continued genetic monitoring of the native deer. Square‐planar coordinate Ni2+ ions in oxides are exclusively limited to a low‐spin state (S=0) owing to extensive crystal field splitting. Layered oxychalcogenides A2NiIIO2Ag2Se2 (A=Sr, Ba) with the S=1 NiO2 square lattice are now reported. The structural analysis revealed that the Ni2+ ion is under‐bonded by a significant tensile strain from neighboring Ag2Se2 layers, leading to the reduction in crystal field splitting. Ba2NiO2Ag2Se2 exhibits a G‐type spin order at 130 K, indicating fairly strong in‐plane interactions. The high‐pressure synthesis employed here possibly assists the expansion of NiO2 square lattice by taking the advantage of the difference in compressibility in oxide and selenide layers. Square‐planar coordinate Ni2+ ions in oxides are exclusively limited to a low‐spin state (S=0) owing to extensive crystal field splitting. Layered oxychalcogenides A2NiIIO2Ag2Se2 (A=Sr, Ba) with the S=1 NiO2 square lattice are now reported. The structural analysis revealed that the Ni2+ ion is under‐bonded by a significant tensile strain from neighboring Ag2Se2 layers, leading to the reduction in crystal field splitting. Ba2NiO2Ag2Se2 exhibits a G‐type spin order at 130 K, indicating fairly strong in‐plane interactions. The high‐pressure synthesis employed here possibly assists the expansion of NiO2 square lattice by taking the advantage of the difference in compressibility in oxide and selenide layers. All in a spin: A high‐pressure reaction allows the synthesis of A2NiO2Ag2Se2 (A=Sr, Ba) with a square‐planar NiO2 sheet. These materials (and Cu/Mn analogues) have extremely long Ni−O (Cu/Mn−O) bonds owing to an extensive strain from AgSe layers, enabling an otherwise missing S=1 square‐planar state. Key Clinical Message: Even in a country where vancomycin–resistant enterococcus is rare, multidrug‐resistant organism precautions are necessary when admitting patients with a history of medical exposure in other countries. On admission, screening is necessary and if infection is confirmed, a multidisciplinary approach involving different specialists is required. The patient was a 49‐year‐old Japanese female living in the United States. Total pelvic exenteration for cervical carcinoma, Miami pouch formation, and ileostomy had been performed in the United States. She returned to Japan to undergo postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Fever and abdominal pain occurred 42 days after surgery. She consulted the fever outpatient clinic, and a diagnosis of urinary retention‐associated acute renal failure and pyelonephritis was made. We detected vancomycin‐resistant enterococcus on urine/blood culture 5 days after admission. Infection control measures were implemented, and the ward was closed for 3 days. The effect of a mental health promotion program based on cognitive behavioral therapy and social-emotional learning called “You Can Do It! Education” on the resilience of elementary school students was evaluated. Participants were fourth grade students at elementary schools in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, who were assigned to the intervention ( n = 78) or control ( n = 47) group. The intervention group was taught eight program lessons by a visiting counselor, which covered topics related to resilience and the relationships of thinking, feeling, and behaving. The intervention group showed significant improvements in resilience and social support, whereas the control group did not. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for childhood anxiety is effective in schools; however, researchers have reported mixed results and expressed concerns regarding sociocultural differences in treating childhood anxiety. This study examined the efficacy of the FRIENDS program, which is a CBT program used at a universal school level. Students (N = 154; 11- to 12-years-old) participated in either a program or waitlist condition and completed the Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale at prior and subsequent to implementation of the program and during follow up. Results revealed a significant interaction between group and gender in the social phobia subscale and a significant main effect of gender in six subscales. SUMMARY We designed and evaluated ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits) for a human activity monitoring system in order to reduce total power consumption. The ASIC extracts the HR from the measured electrocardiogram (ECG) raw signal. Distinctive survival strategies, specialized in regulation and in quality control, were observed in thermal adaptive evolution with a laboratory Escherichia coli strain. The two specialists carried a single mutation either within rpoH or upstream of gro ESL, which led to the activated global regulation by sigma factor 32 or an increased amount of Gro EL/ ES chaperonins, respectively. Although both specialists succeeded in thermal adaptation, the common winner of the evolution was the specialist in quality control, that is, the strategy of chaperonin-mediated protein folding. To understand this evolutionary consequence, multilevel analyses of cellular status, for example, transcriptome, protein and growth fitness, were carried out. The specialist in quality control showed less change in transcriptional reorganization responding to temperature increase, which was consistent with the finding of that the two specialists showed the biased expression of molecular chaperones. Such repressed changes in gene expression seemed to be advantageous for long-term sustainability because a specific increase in chaperonins not only facilitated the folding of essential gene products but also saved cost in gene expression compared with the overall transcriptional increase induced by rpoH regulation. Functional specialization offered two strategies for successful thermal adaptation, whereas the evolutionary advantageous was more at the points of cost-saving in gene expression and the essentiality in protein folding. In this paper, we report that W/Fe/W (001) epitaxial trilayer films exhibit very large negative uniaxial magnetic anisotropy Ku . The magnitude of Ku increases with decreasing the Fe layer thickness and also exhibits significant temperature dependence varying from -2.1 \times 10^7 erg/cc at 300 K to -3.5 \times 10^7 erg/cc at 10 K for the Fe layer thickness of 0.5 nm. The large negative Ku is attributable to interface magnetic anisotropy in nature at the W/Fe interface and can be quantitatively reproduced by the firstprinciples calculation. The X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurement at room temperature has revealed that the interfacial W atom is polarized in antiparallel with the magnetic moment of Fe. The induced magnetic moment of the interfacial W is almost the half of the values obtained by the first-principles calculation and the previous experiment at low temperature. Photo-Fries rearrangement of phenyl salicylate was examined by real-time infrared (IR) monitoring in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Changes in the spectral features were readily captured during the photo-induced chemical reaction of the phenyl salicylate by means of two-dimensional (2D) correlation spectroscopy. The obvious variations of spectral intensities due to the production of 2,2′-dihydroxybenzophenone and 2,4′-dihydroxybenzophenone are clearly identified to provide in-depth understanding to the photo-Fries rearrangement. Namely, when exposed to UV-irradiation, the majority of the phenyl salicylate undergoes photothermal degradation. Further irradiation to the rest of the phenyl salicylate then results in the production of 2,2′-dihydroxybenzophenone followed by the development 2,4′-dihydroxybenzo-phenome products. Such delay in the production of 2,4′-dihydroxybenzo-phenome implies the presence of some more pathways, which makes its reaction efficiency lower than that of 2,2′-dihydroxybenzophenone. Key message: The seedless mutant tn-1 in chili pepper is caused by a mutation in CaCKI1 (CA12g21620), which encodes histidine kinase involving female gametophyte development. An amino acid insertion in the receiver domain of CaCKI1 may be the mutation responsible for tn-1. Seedlessness is a desirable trait in fruit crops because the removal of seeds is a troublesome step for consumers and processing industries. However, little knowledge is available to develop seedless chili peppers. In a previous study, a chili pepper mutant tn-1, which stably produces seedless fruits, was isolated. In this study, we report characterization of tn-1 and identification of the causative gene. Although pollen germination was normal, confocal laser microscopy observations revealed deficiency in embryo sac development in tn-1. By marker analysis, the tn-1 locus was narrowed down to a 313 kb region on chromosome 12. Further analysis combined with mapping-by-sequencing identified CA12g21620, which encodes histidine kinase as a candidate gene. Phylogenetic analysis revealed CA12g21620 was the homolog of Arabidopsis CKI1 (Cytokinin Independent 1), which plays an important role in female gametophyte development, and CA12g21620 was designated as CaCKI1. Sequence analysis revealed that tn-1 has a 3-bp insertion in the 6th exon resulting in one lysine (K) residue insertion in receiver domain of CaCKI1, and the sequence nearby the insertion is widely conserved among CKI1 orthologs in various plants. This suggested that one K residue insertion may reduce the phosphorylation relay downstream of CaCKI1 and impair normal development of female gametophyte, resulting in seedless fruits production in tn-1. Furthermore, we demonstrated that virus-induced gene silencing of CaCKI1 reduced normally developed female gametophyte in chili pepper. Abstract: CBP501 is a chemically modified peptide composed of twelve unnatural d-amino acids, which inhibits Chk kinase and abrogates G2 arrest induced by DNA-damaging agents. Here we identified an alphaC helix in 14-3-3 protein as a CBP501-binding site using T7 phage display technology. An affinity selection of T7 phage-displayed peptide using biotinylated CBP501 identified a 14-mer peptide NSDCIISRKIEQKE. This peptide sequence showed similarity to a portion of the alphaC helix of human 14-3-3ε, suggesting that CBP501 may bind to this region. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and ELISA demonstrated that CBP501 interacts with 14-3-3ε specifically at the screen-guided region. An avidin-agarose bead pull-down assay showed that CBP501 also binds to other 14-3-3 isoforms in Jurkat cells. Among the other known Chk kinase inhibitors tested, CBP501 showed the strongest affinity for 14-3-3ε. A synthetic dual-function operon with a bistable structure was designed and successfully integrated into the bacterial genome. Bistability was generated by the mutual inhibitory structure comprised of the promoters Ptet and Plac and the repressors LacI and TetR. Dual function essential for cell growth was introduced by replacing the genes (i.e., hisC and leuB) encoding proteins involved in the biosynthesis of histidine and leucine from their native chromosomal locations to the synthetic operon. Both colony formation and population dynamics of the cells carrying this operon showed that the cells survived starvation and the newly formed population transited between the two stable states, representing the induced hisC and leuB levels, in accordance with the nutritional status. The ultrasonic technique for measuring travel times of compressional and shear waves using dual-mode transducers was adapted to a piston cylinder apparatus, allowing simultaneous measurements of travel times of compressional and shear waves of island arc samples under the high pressure and temperature conditions of island arcs. This method enables us to determine elastic properties and their pressure and temperature derivatives simultaneously. Furthermore, Vp/Vs can be directly determined from travel times of compressional and shear waves independently of length change due to compression or thermal expansion of rock samples under deep crustal conditions, providing more accurate Vp/Vs values than those determined from individual measurements of travel times of both elastic wave types using single-mode transducers. Experimental techniques and results are demonstrated using data on silicified pelitic schist from the Ryoke Belt to 0.6 GPa. The simultaneous measurement gives Vp = 5.60 km/s, ∂ Vp/∂ P = 0.090 (km/s)/GPa, Vs = 3.37 km/s, ∂ Vs/∂ P = 0.05 (km/s)/GPa, σ = 0.216, and Vp/ Vs = 1.66 at ambient conditions. The temperature derivatives were constrained from fitting using linear functions of temperature, yielding ∂ Vp/∂ T = −0.518 × 10−3 (km/s)/K and ∂ Vs/∂ T = −0.182 × 10−3 (km/s)/K. Performing simultaneous measurements of travel times of compressional and shear waves using dual-mode transducers, it is possible to accurately determine Vp/ Vs and Poisson's ratio of crustal minerals and rocks at deep crustal conditions to study the composition of the crustal interior, e.g. rock types and fluids below the hypocentral region of earthquakes or around bright spots. A pilot trial provided some evidence that the Triple P Positive Parenting Program is effective with and acceptable to a Japanese population in Australia (Matsumoto, Sofronoff & Sanders, 2007). This effectiveness study aimed to address theoretical and practical concerns related to the parent training program in community settings in Japan. The research used community resources within an ecological framework. Fifty-four Japanese families living in a Tokyo metropolitan area were randomly assigned to either a treatment or a wait-list control group. Program effects and acceptability were examined and then compared with the outcomes from the trial with Japanese parents living in Australia. The results showed significant program effects and high levels of acceptability of the program and core parenting skills, which was consistent with the pilot trial. The findings provided support for the effectiveness and sociocultural validation of Triple P in Japanese society. Abstract: Magnesium and coconuts shell activated carbon composite was prepared to selectively remove heavy metals ions in aqueous solution. Zinc(II) and cadmium(II) ions were used to clarify the adsorption capacity of the composite in comparison with no magnesium containing activated carbon. Influence of the initial heavy metal concentration, time course and solution temperature on the adsorption amounts were examined for the two adsorbents, and surface chemistry of the adsorbents was also characterized using Boehm titration. The magnesium composite adsorbed greater amount of Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions than the no magnesium counterpart. The adsorption amount of Cd(II) was not influenced with rise in solution temperature for the composite, whereas decrease in adsorption was observed for the counterpart. The loaded magnesium was estimated to be combined with carbon surface via oxygen bridge. Cadmium(II) was adsorbed onto the composite surface by ion exchange process with releasing equivalent amount of Mg(II) from the carbon surface, while Zn(II) would adsorb onto the composite by not only the ion exchange, but also the electrostatic interaction with the Cπ electrons on the graphite surface from the experimental results. We examined variables associated with parental intention to participate in a parenting program viewed within a socio-ecological framework. In two metropolitan areas in Japan, 222 families voluntarily completed a series of questionnaires. A series of multiple regression analyses was used to evaluate the Socio-Ecological Predictor Model that was able to account for 50% of the variance associated with parental intention to participate in a parenting program. The most significant predictor in the model was program features, which accounted for 30% of the variance. It is important to consider program features that make it more likely that parents will engage positively in a parenting program. This study examined the efficacy of the Group Triple P-Positive Parenting Program with a Japanese population to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the program and the parenting skills taught in a crosscultural context. The study involved 50 Japanese parents living in Australia and used a randomised group comparison design with two conditions, Triple P group and a waitlist control group. The results revealed significant reductions in parent reported child behaviour problems, parental overreactivity and laxness, and parental conflict as well as increasing parental competence. Abstract: Bicyclic dioxetanes bearing a 3-hydroxyphenyl moiety substituted with an amidomethyl group (3a–c ) or a hydroxymethyl group ( 4 ) were synthesized. On treatment with tetrabutylammonium fluoride in CH3CN, they decomposed rapidly with accompanying emission of blue light. Their decomposition rates and chemiluminescence efficiencies were found to be affected by the intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the phenoxy anion and the adjacent proton-donating group. The relationship between oxidative stress and longevity is a matter of concern in various organisms. We isolated mutants resistant to peracute from nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. One mutant named mev-4 was long- lived and showed cross-resistance to heat and Dyf phenotype (defective in dye filling). Genetic and sequence analysis revealed that mev-4 had a nonsense mutation on the che-11 gene, homologues of which are involved in formation of cilia and flagella in other organisms. The peracute resistance was commonly observed in various Dyf mutants and did not depend on the daf-16 gene, whereas the extension of life span did depend on it. Expression of antioxidant enzyme genes seemed normal. These results suggest that chemosensory neurons are a target of oxidative stress and influence longevity dependent on the daf-16 signaling in C. elegants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A soil bacterium, Klebsiella oxytoca TNM3 was found to produce a polysaccharide named AZ9 that shows suppressive effects on IgE antibody response in mice. When mice were administered with 50 ∼ 100 mg/kg AZ9 subcutaneousely for 4 consecutive days after immunization with trinitrophenyl (TNP)-keyhole limpet hemocyanin, anti-TNP IgE production was significantly suppressed, while the level of anti-TNP IgM was affected marginally. In AZ9-administered mice, IL-4 secretion from splenic cells was reduced to ∼ 30% of the untreated control. Thus, AZ9 suppression of IgE production may be due to attenuating effects on the Th2-type response. Although oral administration of AZ9 alone had no effects on IgE production, ovalbumin (OVA)-induced oral tolerance of anti-TNP IgE response to TNP-OVA was markedly augmented when a suboptimal dose of OVA was administered orally in combination with AZ9. We aimed to clarify the correlations between motor symptoms and obsessive–compulsive symptoms and between the volumes of basal ganglia components and obsessive–compulsive symptoms. We retrospectively included 14 patients with medically intractable, moderate and severe generalized dystonia. The Burke–Fahn–Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale and Maudsley Obsessional Compulsive Inventory were used to evaluate the severity of dystonia and obsessive–compulsive symptoms, respectively. Patients with generalized dystonia were divided into two groups; patients whose Maudsley Obsessional Compulsive Inventory score was lower than 13 (Group 1) and 13 or more (Group 2). Additionally, the total Maudsley Obsessional Compulsive Inventory scores in patients with dystonia were significantly higher than normal volunteers' scores (p = 0.025). Unexpectedly, Group 2 (high Maudsley Obsessional Compulsive Inventory scores) showed milder motor symptoms than Group 1 (low Maudsley Obsessional Compulsive Inventory scores) (p = 0.016). "Checking" rituals had a strong and significant negative correlation with the Burke–Fahn–Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale (ρ = − 0.71, p = 0.024) and a strong positive correlation with the volumes of both sides of the nucleus accumbens (right: ρ = 0.72, p = 0.023; left: ρ = 0.70, p = 0.034). Conventional rodent neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) models using patient-derived immunoglobulin G (IgG) are potentially affected by the differences between the human and rodent aquaporin-4 (AQP4) extracellular domains (ECDs). We hypothesized that the humanization of AQP4 ECDs would make the rodent model lesions closer to human NMOSD pathology. Humanized-AQP4-expressing (hAQP4) rats were generated using genome-editing technology, and the human AQP4-specific monoclonal antibody (mAb) or six patient-derived IgGs were introduced intraperitoneally into hAQP4 rats and wild-type Lewis (WT) rats after immunization with myelin basic protein and complete Freund's adjuvant. Human AQP4-specific mAb induced astrocyte loss lesions specifically in hAQP4 rats. The patient-derived IgGs also induced NMOSD-like tissue-destructive lesions with AQP4 loss, demyelination, axonal swelling, complement deposition, and marked neutrophil and macrophage/microglia infiltration in hAQP4 rats; however, the difference in AQP4 loss lesion size and infiltrating cells was not significant between hAQP4 and WT rats. The patient-derived IgGs bound to both human and rat AQP4 M23, suggesting their binding to the shared region of human and rat AQP4 ECDs. Anti-AQP4 titers positively correlated with AQP4 loss lesion size and neutrophil and macrophage/microglia infiltration. Considering that patient-derived IgGs vary in binding sites and affinities and some of them may not bind to rodent AQP4, our hAQP4 rat is expected to reproduce NMOSD-like pathology more accurately than WT rats. Arachidonic acid mobilization in platelets activated by low concentrations (≤ 1.6 μg/ml) of TP 82, a monoclonal antibody against CD9, appears to consist of two distinct phases. In the first phase, limited arachidonic acid release occurs concomitantly with a shape change induced by TP 82. This appears to be dependent upon phospholipase A2 activation, since it is well preserved in the presence of aspirin, which completely blocked both intracellular Ca2+ elevation and phosphatidic acid formation which would indicate phospholipase C activation. The Na+/H+ exchange was also found to participate in the first phase of arachidonic acid mobilization, since extracellular Na+ depletion and ethylisopropylamiloride, a specific inhibitor of the Na+/H+ exchanger, effectively blocked this limited mobilization of arachidonic acid. The second, much larger, phase of arachidonic acid mobilization occurs with the beginning of platelet aggregation. A limited amount of thromboxane A2 formed during the first phase of arachidonic acid release plays an important role in induction of the massive arachidonic mobilization in the second phase. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infection among all infants worldwide and remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. To address this unmet medical need, MK‐1654, a half‐life extended RSV neutralizing monoclonal antibody, is in clinical development for the prevention of RSV disease in infants. This was a phase I, randomized, placebo‐controlled, single‐site, double‐blind trial of MK‐1654 in 44 healthy Japanese adults. The safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, antidrug antibodies (ADAs), and serum neutralizing antibody (SNA) titers against RSV were evaluated for 1 year after a single intramuscular (i.m.) or intravenous (i.v.) dose of MK‐1654 or placebo in five groups (100 mg i.m., 300 mg i.m., 300 mg i.v., 1000 mg i.v., or placebo). MK‐1654 was generally well‐tolerated in Japanese adults. There were no serious drug‐related adverse events (AEs) reported in any MK‐1654 recipient and no discontinuations due to any AEs in the study. The half‐life of MK‐1654 ranged from 76 to 91 days across dosing groups. Estimated bioavailability was 86% for 100 mg i.m. and 77% for 300 mg i.m. One participant out of 33 (3.0%) developed detectable ADA with no apparent associated AEs. The RSV SNA titers increased in a dose‐dependent manner among participants who received MK‐1654. Social innovation in mental health education is imperative in Japan. Mental health problems such as depression and anxiety disorders among Japanese children that may compromise their education and future occupational performances have become prevalent. Accordingly, the early prevention of mental health problems with cognitive-behavioral oriented Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programs, which have mostly been developed in western countries, have been implemented. However, studies have revealed that cognitive-behavioral oriented programs tend to have limited efficacies within the Japanese context due to culturally unique challenges such as low confidence and time and resource constraints. Research in neuroscience has found that cognitive oriented top-down approaches that focus on cognitive change predominantly may not be developmentally appropriate for Japanese children. Consequently, the efficacy and feasibility of a neuroscience-informed child education (NICE) program was developed and examined in this study to address the demands of the Japanese school context by integrating neuroscientific perspectives into a cognitive-behavioral oriented school-based SEL program. Teachers and first-grade students (6–7 years old) were divided into two groups. In the program group, teachers conducted an eight-session NICE program during 20-minute after-class periods. In the information group, teachers applied the approach and skills in daily class management. While the students completed questionnaires regarding their class adjustment and social support awareness at three-time points, the teachers assessed students' behaviors, including difficulties and prosocial behavior. The results supported the efficacy of the NICE program for promoting psychological well-being and increasing social support awareness and prosocial behaviors among Japanese students. The electron correlation effects on the multimode Peierls (MMP) state in the Peierls Hubbard model on the two-dimensional square lattice with the half-filled electronic band is investigated, taking account of the on-site interaction ( U) and the nearest neighbor interaction ( V), by using the variational Monte Carlo method based on the Gutzwiller wave function. The Peierls distortion amplitude is enhanced as U is increased, showing the first-order phase transition from the MMP state to the antiferromagnetic state. The Peierls distortion amplitude is also enhanced by V. The first-order phase transition from the MMP state to the charge-ordered state occurs at a critical value of V. • Provenance study reveals that the Higher Himalayan Crystallines (HHC) supplied detritus to the Lower Siwalik sub-group. • Detrital staurolite and Mg-rich garnets appeared in the Lower Siwalik sub-group at 13–10 Ma in western and central Nepal. • Regional-scale denudation of the HHC rocks accompanied by an out-of-sequence thrust activity occurred at 13–10 Ma. • Denudation and exposure of the HHC rock progressed from the west toward east in the Central Himalaya. The Middle Miocene to Early Pleistocene Siwalik Group is composed of sediments deposited in the Himalayan foreland basin. In this study, the heavy mineral assemblage and chemical composition of detrital garnets from the sandstones in the Lower Siwalik sub-group, which are exposed along the Karnali River in western Nepal and the Tinau Khola in central Nepal, are studied and the provenance shift during the Middle Miocene is discussed. The heavy mineral assemblage in the lower section of the Lower Siwalik sub-group is characterized as predominantly zircon-tourmaline-rutile. Chemical analysis of the detrital garnets showed a monomodal almandine-rich composition with low pyrope (Prp <10) and moderate grossular (Grs 10-20) content. The composition pattern subsequently changed to a bimodal distribution with an increase in pyrope (Prp 10-25) and low grossular (Grs <10) content with the appearance of detrital staurolite. These results indicate that the Middle Miocene erosion of the Higher Himalayan Crystallines (HHC) are the source of the deposits in the Siwalik Group. Changes in the heavy mineral assemblage and garnet composition are recognized in the Karnali River section at 14–12 Ma and in the Tinau Khola section at 11–10 Ma, which suggests that the denudation of the HHC progressed from west to east in the western and central Nepal Himalayas. Background: To evaluate the degree of cerebral atrophy for Alzheimer's disease (AD), voxel-based morphometry has been performed with magnetic resonance imaging. Detailed morphological changes in a specific tissue area having the most evidence of atrophy were not considered by the machine-learning technique. Purpose: To develop a machine-learning system that can capture morphology features for determination of atrophy of brain tissue in early-stage AD and classification of healthy participants or patients. Material and Methods: Three-dimensional T1-weighted (3D-T1W) data were obtained from AD Neuroimaging Initiative (200 healthy controls and 200 patients with early-stage AD). Automated segmentation of 3D-T1W data was performed. Deep learning (DL) and support vector machine (SVM) were trained using 66-segmented volume values as input and AD diagnosis as output. DL was performed using 66 volume values or gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) volume values. SVM learning was performed using 66 volume values and six regions with high variable importance. 3D convolutional neural network (3D-CNN) was trained using the segmented images. Accuracy and area under curve (AUC) were obtained. Variable importance was evaluated from logistic regression analysis. Results: DL for GM and WM volume values, accuracy 0.6; SVM for all volume values, accuracy 0.82 and AUC 0.81; DL for all volume values, accuracy 0.82 and AUC 0.8; 3D-CNN using segmental images of the whole brain, accuracy 0.5 and AUC 0.51. SVM using volume values of six regions, accuracy 0.82; image-based 3D-CNN, highest accuracy 0.69. We present a Raman study on the phase transitions of organic/inorganic hybrid perovskite materials, CH3NH3PbX3 (X = I, Br), which are used as solar cells with high power conversion efficiency. The temperature dependence of the Raman bands of CH3NH3PbX3 (X = I, Br) was measured in the temperature ranges of 290 to 100 K for CH3NH3PbBr3 and 340 to 110 K for CH3NH3PbI3. Broad ν1 bands at ~326 cm−1 for MAPbBr3 and at ~240 cm−1 for MAPbI3 were assigned to the MA–PbX3 cage vibrations. These bands exhibited anomalous temperature dependence, which was attributable to motional narrowing originating from fast changes between the orientational states of CH3NH3+ in the cage. Phase transitions were characterized by changes in the bandwidths and peak positions of the MA–cage vibration and some bands associated with the NH3+ group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
