Longhorn beetles (Coleoptera : Cerambycidae) have been used to identify sites of high biological diversity and conservation value in cultivated landscapes, but were rarely studied in changing landscapes of humid tropics. This study was conducted in a region of southern Yunnan, China, which was dominated by natural rainforest until 30 years ago, but is successively transformed into commercial rubber monoculture plantations since that time. The objectives were to investigate longhorn beetle species diversity and distribution in the major land use types of this landscape and to estimate the effects of an expected expansion of rubber plantations on the longhorn beetle assemblages. The results showed that tree species diversity (181 species in total) and longhorn beetle diversity (220 species in total) were closely related with no significant differences between the tree and longhorn beetles assemblages shown by similarity distance analysis. There was a highly positive relationship between the estimated species richness of longhorn beetles and the number of tree species. Individual numbers of longhorn beetles and trees were also highly positive related at the sampling sites. Non-metric multidimensional scaling revealed that the degree of canopy coverage, succession age and tree diversity explained 78.5% of the total variation in longhorn beetle assemblage composition. Natural forest sites had significantly higher numbers of species and individuals than any other type of habitat. Although young rubber plantations bear the highest longhorn beetle diversity outside forests (half of the total number of longhorn beetle species recorded in total), they can not provide permanent habitats for most of these species, because they develop into closed canopy plantations with less suitable habitat conditions. Therefore, along with an expected expansion of rubber cultivation which largely proceeds at the expense of forest areas, the habitat conditions for longhorn beetles in this region might decrease dramatically in future. The response of insects to monoculture plantations has mainly proceeded at the expense of natural forest areas, and is an outstanding and important issue in ecology and conservation biology, with pollination services declined around the world. In this study, species richness and distribution of hoverfly and wild bee communities were investigated in a changing tropical landscape in southern Yunnan, south-west China by Malaise traps periodically from 2008 to 2009. Species were recorded from the traditional land use types (natural forest, grassland, shrubland and rice field fallows), and from recently established rubber plantations of different ages. Hoverflies (total 53 species) were most common in young successional stages of vegetation, including rice field fallow and shrubland. Species richness was highest in rice field fallows and lowest in forests and showed a highly significant relationship with the number of forb species and ground vegetation cover. In contrast, the highest richness of wild bees (total 44 species) was recorded from the natural forest sites, which showed a discrete bee community composition compared to the remaining habitat types. There was no significant relationship between the bee species richness and the environmental variables, including the numbers of different plant life forms, coverage of canopy and ground vegetation, successional age of vegetation and land use type. At the landscape scale, open land use systems, including young rubber plantations, are assumed to increase the species richness of hoverflies; however, this might decrease wild bee diversity. Fruit and leaf shoot of litchi ( Litchi chinensis) infestation by naturally occurring populations of the fruit borer, Conopomorpha sinensis larvae and C. sinensis parasitization rates were determined in litchi orchards in northern Thailand at high (ca. 1 400 m ASL) and low (ca. 800 m ASL) elevations with different, non-over-lapping fruiting seasons. In addition, spray applications of Bacillus thuringiensis var. aizawai, the natural compound spinosad and the chemical pesticide imidacloprid were conducted in the field to test the effects of these agents on C. sinensis fruit infestation rate. Fruit infestation rate and fruit growth, studied in a low elevation orchard, were sigmoidal and showed a highly significant positive correlation ( P· 0.01). Leaf shoot infestation rate in the low elevation orchard decreased in the course of the fruiting season (March until May), but increased in the high elevation orchard, where no fruits were present within the same period of time. Together, these results indicate that females of C. sinensis clearly prefer fruits over shoots for oviposition. If no fruits are available, which was the case in the high elevation orchard during that time, they are constrained to lay their eggs on shoots. The parasitization rate of C. sinensis larvae in untreated fruits was 54.3%. The parasitoid species were Chelonus chailini (90.8%) and Phanerotoma sp. (9.2%). In the leaf shoots, C. sinensis was found to be parasitized by Phanerotoma sp. and Apanteles briareus. The applications of the different active agents had no significant effect on C. sinensis fruit infestation compared to the untreated control. Besides the cryptic life of the larvae, this is most probably explained by the fact that C. sinensis has several generations during the fruiting season. Because of the high parasitization rates recorded, an alternative and more effective control measure than the application of pesticides might be the augmentative release of parasitoids. Abstract: The objectives of this study, dealing with the relationships of insects between the natural forest and the open agricultural land, were to: (a) record insects at sites of the forest interior, the forest margin and agricultural land, using modified Malaise traps, in order to identify species that occur in the forest as well as in the open country, (b) determine the movement patterns of selected species based on their abundances at the different habitats, (c) find out whether major pest species of the cultivated crops show any relationship to the adjacent natural forest and (d) find out whether species originating from the forest (non-pest species) are able to colonize open country. The results indicate that the habitat of the pest species considered is limited to cultivated land and does not include the forest. None of the non-pest species recorded in this study would be able to exist permanently in the agricultural area. They all depend on a closed forest habitat and therefore will become extinct as the forest disappears with proceeding slash and burn agriculture. However, some but not all of the pest and non-pest species were regularly recorded from the forest margin. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Quantitative analyses of the snail assemblages of four a priori defined categories of grassland sites, characterized by soil moisture, land use and management, were conducted in SW Germany. Topsoil pH and calcium content were determined for each of 39 sites. The objectives were to study the effects of these habitat characteristics on snail density, species richness and quantitative structure of the land snail assemblages. With one exception, no significant relationships between soil pH (as a proxy for Ca supply) and the total numbers of individuals and species at the four site categories were observed. Snail density and species richness on groundwater soils, represented by rarely mown sedge stands and regularly mown meadows, were clearly higher than on intermediate moisture soils (as defined by the climatic water balance) of regularly mown meadows, indicating that soil moisture was the most important factor accounting for these differences. Furthermore, we observed specific conditions associated with the presence of trees in the category of meadow orchards on intermediate moisture soils. There, numbers of individuals and species were significantly higher than in the meadows on intermediate moisture soils. A posteriori cluster analysis of quantitative similarity of all snail assemblages showed that soil moisture accounts for the major differences between the site categories with respect to snail density, species richness and quantitative composition of the grassland snail assemblages. As these results are in contrast to the findings of many woodland studies, we suggest that the occurrence or abundance of certain species in the site categories are explained by land management, especially by frequent disturbances at the soil surface caused by mowing. The objectives were to (1) analyse the combined effects of soil pH, Ca content and soil moisture on total density and species richness of land snails in forest ecosystems, (2) explore relationships between the quantitative composition of snail assemblages and habitat characteristics, (3) investigate the relationships between soil pH and density of some of the most frequent species, and (4) compare the data with those from studies conducted in other temperate-humid regions of Europe. Study sites were selected from 15 landscape types including different lithologies within the area of Baden-Württemberg (35,000 km2), SW Germany. Snails were recorded quantitatively from 83 study sites, with four plots representing a total of 0.25 m2 per site. Topsoil samples from each site were analysed for pH, exchangeable Ca, and Ca content of carbonates. Three categories of soil moisture (dry, intermediate and wet) were established and defined according to the (climatic) water balance. Numbers of individuals and species were brought in relation to soil moisture and soil pH. Cluster analyses were conducted to identify groups of quantitatively similar snail species assemblages. Topsoil pH (2.7–7.5) and soil Ca contents were closely correlated. On dry soils, total snail density and species richness are generally low and do not change with pH, but clearly increase with increasing pH on intermediate moisture soils and on wet soils. On the latter, numbers of individuals and species are generally much higher compared with intermediate moisture sites at the same value of soil pH. Changes of density in relation to soil pH vary between species. Depending on the species, density increases only in the lower or only in the higher range of pH, is not related to pH, or decreases with increasing pH. Furthermore, these patterns vary within the same species depending on the region. This became evident from comparisons with other studies, particularly between sites in SW Germany and southern Scandinavia. From cluster analyses, subgroups of snail assemblages of high quantitative similarity were identified. Group formation is explained by soil pH to some extent, and one subgroup showed a connection with coniferous woodland sites on acidic soils. No further environmental factors available from our data could explain the clustering of snail assemblages more detailed. Soil moisture is the strongest determinant of snail density and species richness at undisturbed woodland sites, but effects of soil moisture and soil pH on these patterns are closely interrelated on intermediate moisture soils and wet soils. However, the quantitative species composition of the land snail assemblages is related to soil properties to a lower degree than snail density and species richness, and other habitat characteristics such as vegetation or litter quality, can be important for species dominance in addition. Introduction: Preterm birth accounts for $7.4 billion (2002) hospital charges for premature infants. In a paradigm shift to understand tocolytic desensitization, I shifted focus to myometrial relaxation, i.e., decrease in [Ca2+]cyt. Methods: Human myometrial myocytes were obtained from women undergoing cesarean delivery. [Ca2+]cyt was measured using ratiometric imaging. Western blots were stained for NCX1 and smooth muscle actin. Results: Inhibition of NCX increased the rate and amplitude of oxytocin induced oscillations. Terbutaline or Mg2+ blocked oxytocin induced oscillations for 48 hours. After 72 hours, the inhibitory effects of terbutaline and Mg2+ diminished: in vitro desensitized to tocolysis. At 96 hours exposure, full tocolytic desensitization was observed. NCX expression initially increased with tocolytic application (Terbutaline and Mg2+). After 72 hours, the physiological beginning of tocolytic desensitization, NCX protein expression began to decrease. NCX protein expression temporally correlated with tocolytic desensitization. Simple Summary: Despite huge advances in local and systemic therapies, the 5-year relative survival rate for patients with metastatic CRC is still low. To avoid over- or undertreatment, proper risk stratification with regard to treatment strategy is highly needed. As EMT (epithelial-mesenchymal transition) is a major step in metastatic spread, this study analysed the prognostic effect of EMT-related genes in stage IV colorectal cancer patients using the study cohort of the FIRE-3 trial, an open-label multi-centre randomised controlled phase III trial of stage IV colorectal cancer patients. Overall, the prognostic relevance of EMT-related genes seems stage-dependent. EMT-related genes have no prognostic relevance in stage IV CRC as opposed to stage II/III. Introduction: There is no standard treatment after resection of colorectal liver metastases and the role of systemic therapy remains controversial. To avoid over- or undertreatment, proper risk stratification with regard to postoperative treatment strategy is highly needed. We recently demonstrated the prognostic relevance of EMT-related (epithelial-mesenchymal transition) genes in stage II/III CRC. As EMT is a major step in CRC progression, we now aimed to analyse the prognostic relevance of EMT-related genes in stage IV CRC using the study cohort of the FIRE-3 trial, an open-label multi-centre randomised controlled phase III trial of patients with metastatic CRC. Methods: Overall and progression free survival were considered as endpoints (n = 350). To investigate the prognostic relevance of EMT-related genes on either endpoint, we compared predictive performance of different models using clinical data only to models using gene data in addition to clinical data, expecting better predictive performance if EMT-related genes have prognostic value. In addition to baseline models (Kaplan Meier (KM), (regularised) Cox), Random Survival Forest (RSF), and gradient boosted trees (GBT) were fit to the data. Repeated, nested five-fold cross-validation was used for hyperparameter optimisation and performance evaluation. Predictive performance was measured by the integrated Brier score (IBS). Results: The baseline KM model showed the best performance (OS: 0.250, PFS: 0.251). None of the other models were able to outperform the KM when using clinical data only according to the IBS scores (OS: 0.253 (Cox), 0.256 (RSF), 0.284 (GBT); PFS: 0.254 (Cox), 0.256 (RSF), 0.276 (GBT)). When adding gene data, performance of GBT improved slightly (OS: 0.262 vs. 0.284; PFS: 0.268 vs. 0.276), however, none of the models performed better than the KM baseline. Conclusion: Overall, the results suggest that the prognostic relevance of EMT-related genes may be stage-dependent and that EMT-related genes have no prognostic relevance in stage IV CRC. The floral scents of three forms of cultivated Plumeria rubra L. were evaluated through mass flowering phenology using the dynamic headspace adsorption method and were identified with coupled gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The forms P. rubra f. acutifolia and P. rubra f. lutea had white and yellow flower petals, respectively, and the flower petals of P. rubra f. rubra were red. Although 68 components of the flower scents of the three forms were recorded in different proportions, only 14 chemical compounds were identified with statistically significance. The main volatile compounds in the red form of P. rubra L. were fatty acid derivatives (56.75%). The main compounds in the white and yellow forms of P. rubra L. were benzenoid and terpene, with proportions of 48.38% and 33.33% in P. rubra f. acutifolia and proportions of 42.30% and 47.43% in P. rubra f. lutea , respectively. These differences in the flower scents might be one result of the minor genetic differences between these forms, similar to the role of genetic differences in the flower color combinations of the three forms. We conclude that petal color traits can, to some extent, reflect differences in floral scent compositions and that minor genetic differences of different plant forms exert impacts not only on flower color but also on the phytochemistry of floral scents. • Floral color and scent are the major components that attract pollinator insects. • Ecologists have long sought to explain how these combinations can support deceptive pollination behavior. • We show here the floral scent properties of three forms of Plumeria rubra L. and confirm that (1) there are significant intrinsic relationships between floral color traits and scent compositions: (2) floral color traits can reflect the differences of scent compositions to some extent; and: (3) both color traits of petals and floral scents might play a role in the evolution of the deceptive pollination syndrome of Plumeria rubra L. Wild bananas are abundant in tropical areas and many ecologists have observed that the succession process is quicker following increased disturbance. This study was conducted to analyze animal-seed interactions and their effects on the seed fate of a wild banana species ( Musa acuminata) in tropical southern Yunnan (China) through experiments considering spatial (site and habitat) and temporal (seasons) variation. The largest proportion of fruits (81%) was removed by frugivorous seed dispersers, especially by bats at nighttime. Only 13% of the fruits were removed by climbing seed predators (different species of rats). In the exclosure treatment, rodents accounted for a significantly higher total artificially exposed seed removal number than ants, but with spatial and temporal differences. The highest seed predation rate by rodents (70%) was found in forest with wild banana stands, corresponding with the highest rodent diversity (species numbers and abundance) among the habitat types. In contrast, the seed removal number by ants (57%) was highest in the open land habitats, but there was no close correlation with ant diversity. Seed removal numbers by ants were significantly higher in the dry compared to the rainy season, but rodent activity showed no differences between seasons. The overall results suggest that the largest proportion of seeds produced by wild banana are primarily dispersed by bats. Background. Loss-of-function mutations in SLC12A3 coding for the thiazide-sensitive NaCl cotransporter (NCC) cause Gitelmans syndrome (GS), a recessively inherited salt-losing tubulopathy. Most GS patients are compound heterozygous. However, up to 30% of GS patients carry only a single mutant allele, and a normal SLC12A3 screening is also observed in a small subset of patients. Locus heterogeneity could explain the lack of detection of mutant SLC12A3 alleles in GS patients. The renal phenotype of the parvalbumin knockout mice pointed to PVALB as a candidate gene for GS for SLC12A3-negative cases. Methods. PCR and direct sequencing of PVALB was performed in 132 GS patients in whom only one or no (N = 79) mutant SLC12A3 allele was found. The possible interference of biallelic SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) on normal transcription or normal splicing was investigated. Genotyping of 110 anonymous blood donors was performed to determine the allelic frequency in the normal population. Results. No sequence variants resulting in amino acid substitution or truncated protein within the PVALB gene were found in the 264 chromosomes tested. Ten biallelic SNPs, including six novel polymorphisms, were identified: five in the 5′ UTR, none of them affecting predicted regulatory elements; three in the coding region, without alteration of the consensus splice sites, and two in the 3′ UTR. The observed allelic frequencies did not differ significantly between GS patients and controls. Conclusion. Our results strongly suggest that mutations in the PVALB gene are not involved in GS patients who harbour a single or no mutant SLC12A3 allele. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
