Many applications of 2D materials require deposition of non‐2D metals and metal‐oxides onto the 2D materials. Little is however known about the mechanisms of such non‐2D/2D interfacing, particularly at the atomic scale. Here, atomically resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is used to follow the entire physical vapor deposition (PVD) cycle of application‐relevant non‐2D In/In2O3 nanostructures on graphene. First, a "quasi‐in‐situ" approach with indium being in situ evaporated onto graphene in oxygen‐/water‐free ultra‐high‐vacuum (UHV) is employed, followed by STEM imaging without vacuum break and then repeated controlled ambient air exposures and reloading into STEM. This allows stepwise monitoring of the oxidation of specific In particles toward In2O3 on graphene. This is then compared with conventional, scalable ex situ In PVD onto graphene in high vacuum (HV) with significant residual oxygen/water traces. The data shows that the process pathway difference of oxygen/water feeding between UHV/ambient and HV fabrication drastically impacts not only non‐2D In/In2O3 phase evolution but also In2O3/graphene out‐of‐plane texture and in‐plane rotational van‐der‐Waals epitaxy. Since non‐2D/2D heterostructures' properties are intimately linked to their structure and since influences like oxygen/water traces are often hard to control in scalable fabrication, this is a key finding for non‐2D/2D integration process design. Abstract: This paper provides a brief review on electron microscopic studies of carbon materials. We discuss all aspects ranging from sample preparation via basics of the structure and its reciprocal space representation to high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy. Highlights • A leakvalve attached to a Nion UltraSTEM 100 in Vienna allows atomic-resolution imaging under controlled atmospheres. • The available pressure range is 10 − 10 –10 − 6 mbar. • We mimic a "standard" TEM instrument (pressure ca. 10 − 6 mbar) to study the effect of air on graphene and its contamination. • Residual gases lead etching of contamination and defecteive graphene. The effect is most pronounced with O 2. • This shows that oxygen by itself is enough to cause electron-beam-induced etching without the need of water molecules. Abstract Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is carried out in vacuum to minimize the interaction of the imaging electrons with gas molecules while passing through the microscope column. Nevertheless, in typical devices, the pressure remains at 10 − 7 mbar or above, providing a large number of gas molecules for the electron beam to crack, which can lead to structural changes in the sample. Here, we describe experiments carried out in a modified scanning TEM (STEM) instrument, based on the Nion UltraSTEM 100. In this instrument, the base pressure at the sample is around 2 × 10 − 10 mbar, and can be varied up to 10 − 6 mbar through introduction of gases directly into the objective area while maintaining atomic resolution imaging conditions. We show that air leaked into the microscope column during the experiment is efficient in cleaning graphene samples from contamination, but ineffective in damaging the pristine lattice. Our experiments also show that exposure to O 2 and H 2 O lead to a similar result, oxygen providing an etching effect nearly twice as efficient as water, presumably due to the two O atoms per molecule. H 2 and N 2 environments have no influence on etching. These results show that the residual gas environment in typical TEM instruments can have a large influence on the observations, and show that chemical etching of carbon-based structures can be effectively carried out with oxygen. Vertically stacked low‐dimensional heterostructures are outstanding systems both for exploring fundamental physics and creating new devices. Due to nanometer‐scale building blocks, atomic scale phenomena become for them of fundamental importance, including during device operation. These can be accessed in situ in aberration‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) experiments. Here, the dynamics of a graphene‐MoS2 heterostructure are studied under Joule heating, where the graphene serves as a high temperature atomically thin and electron transparent "hot plate" for the MoS2. Structural dynamics and evolution of the system are shown at the atomic scale, demonstrating that at the highest temperatures (estimated to exceed 2000 K), the continuous 2D MoS2 transforms into separated 3D nanocrystals, initiated by sulfur vacancy creation and migration followed by formation of voids and clustering at their edges. The resulting nanocrystals exhibit predominantly hexagonal shapes with the 2H and hybrid (2H/3R, 3R/TZ) polytypes. The observed morphology of the crystals is further discussed during and after the transformation, as well as their different edge configurations and stability under electron irradiation. These observations of MoS2 at extreme temperatures provide insights into the operation of devices based on graphene/MoS2 heterostructures and ultimately may help device fabrication techniques to create MoS2‐based nanostructures, for example, in hydrogen evolution reaction applications. We directly visualize the three-dimensional (3D) geometry and dynamics of silicon impurities in graphene as well as their dynamics by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. By acquiring images when the sample is tilted, we show that an asymmetry of the atomic position of the heteroatom in the projection reveals the non-planarity of the structure. From a sequence of images, we further demonstrate that the Si atom switches between up- and down- configurations with respect to the graphene plane, with an asymmetric cross-section. We further analyze the 3D structure and dynamics of a silicon tetramer in graphene. Our results clarify the out-of-plane structure of impurities in graphene by direct experimental observation and open a route to study their dynamics in three dimensions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface impurities and contamination often seriously degrade the properties of two-dimensional materials such as graphene. To remove contamination, thermal annealing is commonly used. We present a comparative analysis of annealing treatments in air and in vacuum, both ex situ and ' pre situ,' where an ultra-high vacuum treatment chamber is directly connected to an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope. While ex situ treatments do remove contamination, it is challenging to obtain atomically clean surfaces after ambient transfer. However, pre situ cleaning with radiative or laser heating appears reliable and well suited to clean graphene without damage to most suspended areas. Pre situ annealing of typical dirty graphene samples yields atomically clean areas several hundred nm2 in size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work we demonstrate that a free-standing van der Waals heterostructure, usually regarded as a flat object, can exhibit an intrinsic buckled atomic structure resulting from the interaction between two layers with a small lattice mismatch. We studied a freely suspended membrane of well-aligned graphene on a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) monolayer by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning TEM (STEM). We developed a detection method in the STEM that is capable of recording the direction of the scattered electron beam and that is extremely sensitive to the local stacking of atoms. A comparison between experimental data and simulated models shows that the heterostructure effectively bends in the out-of-plane direction, producing an undulated structure having a periodicity that matches the moiré wavelength. We attribute this rippling to the interlayer interaction and also show how this affects the intralayer strain in each layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Matter-wave interferometry has become an essential tool in studies on the foundations of quantum physics and for precision measurements. Mechanical gratings have played an important role as coherent beamsplitters for atoms, molecules and clusters, because the basic diffraction mechanism is the same for all particles. However, polarizable objects may experience van der Waals shifts when they pass the grating walls, and the undesired dephasing may prevent interferometry with massive objects. Here, we explore how to minimize this perturbation by reducing the thickness of the diffraction mask to its ultimate physical limit, that is, the thickness of a single atom. We have fabricated diffraction masks in single-layer and bilayer graphene as well as in a 1 nm thin carbonaceous biphenyl membrane. We identify conditions to transform an array of single-layer graphene nanoribbons into a grating of carbon nanoscrolls. We show that all these ultrathin nanomasks can be used for high-contrast quantum diffraction of massive molecules. They can be seen as a nanomechanical answer to the question debated by Bohr and Einstein of whether a softly suspended double slit would destroy quantum interference. In agreement with Bohr's reasoning we show that quantum coherence prevails, even in the limit of atomically thin gratings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Close control over the active catalyst phase and hence carbon nanotube structure remains challenging in catalytic chemical vapor deposition since multiple competing active catalyst phases typically co-exist under realistic synthesis conditions. Here, using in-situ X-ray diffractometry, we show that the phase of supported iron catalyst particles can be reliably controlled via the addition of NH3 during nanotube synthesis. Unlike polydisperse catalyst phase mixtures during H2 diluted nanotube growth, nitrogen addition controllably leads to phase-pure y-Fe during pre-treatment and to phase-pure Fe3C during growth. We rationalize these findings in the context of ternary Fe-C-N phase diagram calculations and, thus, highlight the use of pre-treatment- and add-gases as a key parameter towards controlled carbon nanotube growth. We demonstrate that 60-keV electron irradiation drives the diffusion of threefold-coordinated Si dopants in graphene by one lattice site at a time. First principles simulations reveal that each step is caused by an electron impact on a C atom next to the dopant. Although the atomic motion happens below our experimental time resolution, stochastic analysis of 38 such lattice jumps reveals a probability for their occurrence in a good agreement with the simulations. Conversions from three- to fourfold coordinated dopant structures and the subsequent reverse process are significantly less likely than the direct bond inversion. Our results thus provide a model of nondestructive and atomically precise structural modification and detection for two-dimensional materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We show that the presence of electrically insulating graphite oxide (GO) within a single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) network strongly enhances electrical conductivity, whereas reduced graphite oxide, even though electrically conductive, suppresses electrical conductivity within a composite network with SWCNTs. Measurements of Young’s modulus and of Raman spectra strongly support our interpretation of the “indirect” role of the oxide groups, present in GO within the SWCNT-GO composite, through electronic doping of metallic SWCNTs. In two-dimensional samples, all atomsare at the surface and therebyexposed for probing and manipulation by physical or chemical meansfrom both sides. Here, we show that we can access the same point onboth surfaces of a few-layer graphene membrane simultaneously, usinga dual-probe scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) setup. At the closestpoint, the two probes are separated only by the thickness of the graphenemembrane. This allows us for the first time to directly measure thedeformations induced by one STM probe on a free-standing membranewith an independent second probe. We reveal different regimes of stabilityof few-layer graphene and show how the STM probes can be used as toolsto shape the membrane in a controlled manner. The recent discovery that impurity atoms in crystals can be manipulated with focused electron irradiation has opened novel perspectives for top‐down atomic engineering. These achievements have been enabled by advances not only in electron optics and microscope stability but also in the preparation of suitable materials with impurity elements incorporated via ion and electron‐beam irradiation or chemical means. Here it is shown that silicon heteroatoms introduced via plasma irradiation into the lattice of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) can be manipulated using a focused 55–60 keV electron probe aimed at neighboring carbon sites. Moving the silicon atom mainly along the longitudinal axis of large 2.7 nm diameter tubes, more than 90 controlled lattice jumps are recorded and the relevant displacement cross sections are estimated. Molecular dynamics simulations show that even in 2 nm diameter SWCNTs, the threshold energies for out‐of‐plane dynamics are different than in graphene, and depend on the orientation of the silicon‐carbon bond with respect to the electron beam as well as the local bonding of the displaced carbon atom and its neighbors. Atomic‐level engineering of SWCNTs where the electron wave functions are more strictly confined than in 2D materials may enable the fabrication of tunable electronic resonators and other devices. Detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) with a typical size of 5 nm have attracted broad interest in science and technology. Further size reduction of DNDs would bring these nanoparticles to the molecular-size level and open new prospects for research and applications in various fields, ranging from quantum physics to biomedicine. Here we show a controllable size reduction of the DND mean size down to 1.4 nm without significant particle loss and with additional disintegration of DND core agglutinates by air annealing, leading to a significantly narrowed size distribution (±0.7 nm). This process is scalable to large quantities. Such molecular-sized DNDs keep their diamond structure and characteristic DND features as shown by Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, STEM and EELS.
