Hypospadias occurs sporadically in male livestock and is characterized by a non‐fused urethra during fetal development. In this study, perineal hypospadias, a bifid scrotum, penile hypoplasia, and bilateral abdominal cryptorchidism were diagnosed in a neonatal Holstein male calf. Septicemia was also suspected due to hypothermia, blurred conjunctivae, and loss of sucking and swallowing reflexes. Gross pathology revealed that both testicles were located intraabdominally caudally to the kidneys. Histopathological examination of the hypospadias showed a urothelium‐lined mucosal fold and parts of the corpus cavernosum penis and prepuce in the subcutis. Whole genome sequencing was performed on the affected calf. Analysis of short‐read coverage depth along the chromosomes identified an entire extra copy of chromosome 26. Based on the comparison of available variant calling data from the sire, the identified trisomy 26 is due to non‐disjunction of homologous chromosomes during the generation of paternal gametes. Purpose: This retrospective systematic literature review aimed to summarize available data regarding epidemiology, etiology, presentation, investigations, differentials, treatment, prevention, monitoring, complications, and prognosis for radiation-induced cavernous malformations (RICMs) in pediatric patients. Methodology: Review conducted per PRISMA guidelines. Google Scholar, PubMed, Trip Medical Database, and Cochrane Library searched utilizing a keyphrase, articles filtered per inclusion/exclusion criteria, duplicates excluded. Based on criteria, 25 articles identified, 7 further excluded from the systematic data but included in discussion (5 × insufficient data, 2 × other systematic reviews). Results: Many studies did not contain all explored data. 2487 patients reviewed, 325 later found to have RICM (143 male, 92 female). Mean age at irradiation 7.6 years (range 1.5–19). Mean total radiation dose 56 Gy (12–112). Most common indications for radiation—medulloblastoma 133x, astrocytoma 23x, ependymoma 21x, germinoma 19x. Mean age at RICM diagnosis 18 years (3.6–57). Mean latency to RICM 9.9 years (0.25–41). Most common anatomic locations—temporal 36, frontal 36, parietal 13, basal ganglia 16, infratentorial 20. Clinical presentation—incidental 270, seizures 19, headache 11, focal neurological deficit 7, other 13. 264 patients observed, 34 undergone surgery. RICM bled in 28 patients. Mean follow-up 11.7 years (0.5–50.3). Prognostic reporting highly variable. Conclusions: From our data, pediatric RICMs appear to display slight male predominance, present about 10 years after initial irradiation in late teen years, and present incidentally in majority of cases. Les fentes frontales orbitaires supérieures font partie des fentes rares craniofaciales décrites par Tessier en 1976, dont la survenue est le plus souvent sporadique. Elles sont numérotées 9, 10 et 11 dans cette classification et siègent respectivement latéralement, médianement et médialement vis-à-vis de la partie supérieure de l'orbite. Leurs expressions cliniques sont variables sur les tissus mous et osseux, avec une dissociation d'atteinte possible, et vont d'un simple défaut esthétique à la mise en jeu du pronostic fonctionnel oculaire. Le scanner est systématiquement justifié dans ce cadre. Leur prise en charge doit être adaptée au vu du polymorphisme des atteintes et repose sur une prise en charge multidisciplinaire, avec une reconstruction chirurgicale des parties molles urgente en cas de mise en jeu du pronostic oculaire. Dans les autres cas, la prise en charge est différée mais doit rester précoce afin de permettre un bon développement de l'enfant. Superior orbital frontal clefts are one of the rare craniofacial clefts described by Tessier in 1976, and occur most often sporadically. They are numbered 9, 10 and 11 in this classification, and are located respectively laterally, in the middle and medially to the upper part of the orbit. Their clinical expression is variable on soft tissue and bone, with possible dissociation of involvement. They range from a simple aesthetic defect to an eyes functional prognosis. CT scans are systematically required in this context. Their management must be adapted to the polymorphism of the damage, and is based on multidisciplinary approach. In case of ocular risk, the eyelid reconstruction is an emergency. In all other cases, treatment is deferred, but must be carried out at an early stage to ensure the child's healthy development. OBJECTIVE: To determine reasons for horses to have neck radiographs performed, the incidence of transposition of the ventral lamina of C6 onto 67 (TC67), and the final diagnoses for all horses. Our hypotheses were to find a similar incidence of TC67, as has been previously reported, and an increased incidence of neck pain and dysfunction in horses with TC67. ANIMALS: 135 horses. METHODS: Retrospective observational study. Medical records of 135 horses with cervical vertebral column radiographs between 2020 and 2022 were assessed. Patient signalment, reasons for radiographs, radiographic findings, and diagnoses were analyzed. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used for normality determination. Nonparametric tests were used to analyze data. RESULTS: 20% of horses were diagnosed with TC67. Significantly more horses with TC67 were warmblood horses (63%); TC67 was found in 28% of warmblood horses. There was no significant difference in signalment or whether horses were in work between the groups, although significantly more horses with TC67 performed in English disciplines (71%). No differences in reasons for examination or final diagnoses of neurologic disease, cervical orthopedic disease, or lameness were present between groups. In horses with neck pain, TC67 was significantly more common (31%) than in horses without (18%). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Our results indicated that TC67 occurs more in warmblood horses. In the small group of horses with neck pain reported, TC67 was more commonly seen than in those without. Given the complexity of this region and the paucity of studies exploring neck pain and neck biomechanics, we suggest the need for standardized prospective studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epilepsy is a kind of brain dysfunction caused by abnormal synchronous discharge of brain neurons, and is one of the common diseases of the nervous system. Patients need to take anti-epileptic drugs regularly for a long time to achieve seizures-free. For pregnant women, antiepileptic drugs can enter the fetus through the placental barrier causing adverse effects. Lamotrigine and levetiracetam have the lowest potential teratogenic risk, oxcarbazepine has a low risk, topiramate has high risk, while valproic acid has the most severe teratogenic effect and negative effects on the neuropsychological development of children exposed in utero, and should be avoided as far as possible. At present, the management of antiepileptic drugs is still a difficult clinical problem. Background: Developmental toxicity tests are extremely expensive, require a large number of animals, and are time-consuming. It is necessary to develop a new approach to simplify the analysis of developmental endpoints. One of these endpoints is malformation, and one group of ongoing methods for simplifying is in silico models. In this study, we aim to develop a quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) model and identify the best algorithm for predicting malformations, as well as the most important and effective physicochemical properties associated with malformation. Methods: The dataset was extracted from a reliable database called COMPTOX. Physicochemical properties (descriptors) were calculated using Mordred and RDKit chemoinformatics software. The data were cleaned, preprocessed, and then split into training and testing sets. Machine learning algorithms, such as gradient boosting model (GBM) and logistic regression (LR), as well as deep learning models, including multilayer perceptron (MLP) and neural networks (NNs) trained with train set data and different sets of descriptors. The models were then validated with test set and various statistical parameters, such as Matthew's correlation coefficient (MCC) and balanced accuracy (BAC) score, were used to compare the models. Results: A set of descriptors containing with 78% AUC was identified as the best set of descriptors. Gradient boosting was determined to be the best algorithm with 78% predictive power. Conclusions: The descriptors that were the most effective for developing models directly impact the mechanism of malformation, and GBM is the best model due to its MCC and BAC. Objective: We aimed to investigate whether idiopathic cuneate gyrus herniation (ICH) is an anomaly or a normal variant, its prevalence, whether there is a coexisting finding or pathology, as well as to characterize it with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. Method: We evaluated 0-17-year-olds’ brain MR images from January 2021-August 2023 at our clinic. Standard brain protocols utilize 1.5 Tesla MRI scanners. ICH and congenital brain abnormalities were evaluated in optimal brain MRIs. Malformations were classified as posterior fossa anomalies (PFA), commissural and cortical developmental anomalies (CCDA), and midline malformations. Results: Our study comprised 691 pediatric brain MRIs with a mean age of 5.93±3.4 years, with 48.77% male and 51.23% female. The mean age of 32 ICH (+) patients was 6.19±4.02 years, with 40.63% male and 59.37% female. The prevalence of ICH was 32/691 (4.6%). In 63 (9.11%) congenital brain malformation patients, ICH presence differed (p=0.005). Congenital brain malformation patients with ICH showed a significantly higher PFA rate (n=8) than without ICH. The frequency of CCDA (n=23) and the association of PFA and CCDA (n=12) were significantly higher in ICH patients with congenital brain malformation. The frequency of congenital brain malformation was higher in 32 ICH (+) patients, with a rate of 50% (p<0.001). Conclusion: We found that ICH is more frequent than reported and may be associated with congenital brain malformations. ICH must be differentiated from pathology to avoid unnecessary procedures. Congenital facial nerve (FN) malformations are uncommon. Our aim is to determine the clinical and radiological features of FN malformations along with the associated cochlear and vestibular malformations. We conducted a retrospective study including children with a profound sensorineural hearing loss who were candidates for cochlear implantation. We evaluated the presence of FN malformations through temporal bone computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging. We recorded an aberrant FN course in five out of 165 patients in a total of 9 ears. They consisted of a bifurcation of the mastoid segment, an anterior or posterior displacement of the labyrinthine segment and a hypoplasia of the geniculate ganglion. Associated inner ear malformations included vestibular aqueduct dilation, cochlear hypoplasia and total labyrinthine aplasia. We noted a bilateral agenesis of the cochlear nerve in three patients. Facial nerve malformations should be suspected in patients presenting a congenital hearing loss especially in association with other temporal bone malformations. Simple Summary: This report characterized complete thoracic ectopia cordis (EC) affecting two newborn lambs from different locations in Brazil, contributing to the knowledge about this rare condition in sheep. Two male newborn lambs presented exteriorized hearts without pericardial coverage, delineated in the thoracic cleft by a fibrous ring of the pericardium and adjacent skin. Clinical findings in the lambs, aside from the EC, were unremarkable. EC is an extremely rare congenital malformation in sheep, with limited cases documented globally. The pathogenesis and etiology remain uncertain, involving potential genetic and environmental factors. Cardiac congenital defects related to inheritance and teratogenesis have been reported in veterinary species and humans worldwide. Among these, ectopia cordis (EC), characterized by an externalized heart through a cleft, is extremely rare in sheep. This report presents the diagnostic features of two cases of complete thoracic EC in newborn lambs. Clinical findings in the lambs, aside from the EC, were unremarkable. Both animals exhibited exteriorized hearts without pericardial coverage, delineated in the thoracic cleft by a fibrous ring of the pericardium and adjacent skin. Histologically, the epicardium was thickened by fibrous tissue in both lambs, with one animal also showing marked edema, hemorrhage, and neutrophilic inflammatory infiltration. Hemangiomas are considered slow growing benign neoplasms. Primary thyroid hemangiomas are uncommon and may pose difficulty in diagnosis due to absence of distinctive imaging characteristics and related clinical symptoms. It is crucial to precisely identify these lesions to aid in implementing nonsurgical treatment plans rather than resorting to surgical procedures in certain cases. In this report we present a case of a 76-year-old female who presented with painless, rapid, and sudden notice of right-side neck swelling over a 1-day duration. Her radiological examinations raised the concern of a vascular lesion that was emoblized endovascularly. Then, it was surgically removed, which was eventually determined to be primary thyroid hemangioma. In addition, we present a literature review of previously published cases and discuss tumor pathophysiology, clinical presentations, radiology features, and differential diagnosis. Objective To summarize the imaging findings of intracranial central nervous system (CNS) malformations children in the high-altitude plateau (Xigaze city). Methods We retrospectively reviewed the imaging data of the suspected patients having CNS malformations, which enrolled either by the clinic or by the ultrasound in the Shigatse People’s hospital from June, 2019 to June, 2023. All imaging data were interpreted by two experienced radiologists with consensus reading. Imaging characteristics were recorded roughly by primary/secondary, supra-/subtentorial malformation type and the corresponding clinical symptoms. Results A total of 36 children were included in this study, including 19 patients ≤ 1 year old (including 2 newborns), 7 patients between 1 and 3 years old, and 10 patients >3 years old. Seven cases underwent MRI examination, others having CT scan. Polygyria and pachygyria malformation were the most common type of congenital neurological malformations (7 cases, 31.8%), followed by cystic changes of the cerebral parenchyma (3 cases, 13.6%). Cerebral atrophy was the most common type of secondary CNS abnormalities group (8 cases, 57.1%), followed by communicative hydrocephalus (3 cases, 21.4%). Five patients in the congenital group and 4 patients in the secondary CNS group had the complex malformations. There were 8 dead cases (all in the ≤1-year-old group), 12 cases having neurological sequelae, 1 case with normal development and 15 cases with loss of follow-up. There were no significant differences between primary and secondary CNS group regarding the final outcome. Conclusion In this study, gyrus developmental malformation and encephalatrophy were the most common etiologies in infants’ CNS malformations. Isolated unilateral absence of lunate is an extremely rare condition with only one such case reported in English literature so far. The rarity of this condition can lead to diagnostic dilemma, especially if patient has an old history of trauma or surgery around the wrist, leading to unnecessary intervention and difficulty in ensuring a good surgical outcome. Limb anomalies are widespread and diversified in arthropods. From trilobites to insects, they range from the loss to the addition or fusion of legs and may appear congenitally or be induced experimentally (e.g., amputation or injury). Basal chelicerates pycnogonids, or sea spiders, also show deformities. Despite being understudied compared to other arthropods, quite a high diversity of limb malformations has been reported in the literature. The present study reports the leg anomalies of two adult females Ammothea hilgendorfi (Böhm, 1879) observed with duplicated leg podomeres. Both individuals were described ethologically and morphologically. Although the current knowledge on pycnogonids is limited, the anomaly is likely due to a problem in the molting process; the specimens were unable to totally remove their old exuviae, which then stacked after the proximal leg segments. The second specimen also showed other leg deformities, hinting at a problem during the molting process itself. The discussion emphasizes that understanding how pycnogonids normally molt would not only help our understanding of how the abnormal patterns appeared but also put pycnogonids into perspective with other arthropods, a phylum in which they have a key taxonomic position. Background: Intervertebral disc herniation is widely recognized as the most common cause of myelopathy in dogs older than 2 years; however, the prevalence of various causes of myelopathy in younger dogs has not been reported. Hypothesis/Objectives: To describe the prevalence, clinical presentation, and etiology of myelopathy in dogs aged 18 months or less. Secondarily, to investigate which clinical features were associated with each of the most common etiologies. Animals: Two hundred twenty‐four dogs aged 18 months or less with myelopathy were included in the study. Methods: Retrospective review of clinical records from 4 referral institutions. Multivariable logistic regression analyses assessed which clinical features were associated with each diagnosis. Results: French bulldogs (n = 51, 22.8%), pugs (n = 18, 8.0%), crossbreeds (n = 12, 5.4%), and English bulldogs (n = 11, 4.9%) were the most frequently affected breeds. Overall, 31 diagnoses were reached. The 5 most frequent diagnoses were vertebral malformation (VM; n = 42, 18.8%), spinal arachnoid diverticulum (SAD; n = 28, 12.5%), traumatic fracture of the vertebral column (n = 22, 9.8%), atlantoaxial instability (n = 18, 8.0%), and osseous‐associated cervical spondylomyelopathy (n = 17, 7.6%). Intervertebral disc extrusion (IVDE) accounted for 4.5% of cases (n = 10). A final diagnosis of VM was associated with younger, screw‐tailed, and pug breeds with chronic signs of T3‐L3 myelopathy. SAD was associated with screw‐tailed and pug breeds with nonpainful clinical signs. Intervertebral disc extrusion was associated with older, screw‐tailed, and pug breeds with shorter duration of clinical signs. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Prioritization of differential diagnoses for dogs presenting with signs of myelopathy when aged 18 months or less should differ to those for older dogs, with IVDE not the most common cause in the former. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is the largest membranous network serving as a region for protein, lipid and steroid synthesis, transport and storage. Detailed information about ER-cisternae, ER-tubules and rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER) is scarce in human blood cells. This study describes a series of giant inclusions and Auer bodies in promyeloblasts in six patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cytochemical stains. TEM revealed that giant inclusions and pro-Auer bodies were associated with rER and surrounded by tubular structures composed of degenerated or redundant membrane in promyeloblasts, which corresponded with elements of the ER system. Background: Pericardial tumors have a rare occurrence. The incidence of pericardial tumors is 6.7 to 12.8% of all cardiac tumors, which in turn accounts for only 0.001 to 0.03% of all malignancies. Lymphangiohemangiomas are tumors which can occur at any age group, in any part of the body. Lymphangiohemangioma of the pericardium is a rare phenomenon. Here we present an extremely rare case of pediatric pericardial lymphangiohemangioma presenting with massive pericardial effusion resulting in cardiac tamponade uniquely managed by subtotal pericardiectomy followed by administration of mTOR inhibitor based on the histopathology and PET scan. Case Presentation: A 6-year-old male child, 2nd twin of 3rddegree consanguineous marriage presented to the emergency department and was admitted in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with complaints of progressive difficulty in breathing since 3 months cough and rhinorrhea since 2 days and chest pain since 2 days. His birth history, immunization and developmental history were not significant for the present complaints, Anthropometry was within normal range. Outcome and follow up: Postoperatively the patient improved gradually. Intercostal drains were removed and patient was shifted out of the ICU on O2 support with nasal prongs. However, he continued to have respiratory distress. Ultrasonography chest revealed consolidation and bilateral hemorrhagic pleural effusion. Repeat ultrasonographys showed increased pleural effusion. His respiratory distress increased so he was put onmechanical ventilation and Ultrasonography guided pleural tapping was done thrice. After starting Sirolimus, gradually, condition of the child improved, pleural effusion reduced, and he was shifted to the ward on High Flow Nasal Cannula. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the only reported case of diffuse pericardial lymphangiohematomatosis. In this particular case, subtotal pericardiectomy resulted in symptomatic relief by relieving the cardiac tamponade and resultant cardiac compression. This approach was preferred in this case over the other option of pericardial window creation taking into account the need for complete drainage of the massive pericardial tamponade, removal of adequate pericardial tissue which was acting as the source of pericardial effusion and acquiring adequate and representative tissue for histopathological diagnosis of the disease. Les urgences chirurgicales néonatales regroupent un ensemble d'affections qui nécessitent une prise en charge immédiate et adéquate en raison d'une menace vitale ou fonctionnelle. Notre travail a pour but de déterminer la fréquence et les facteurs épidémiologiques ainsi que le pronostic à court et moyen termes. Nous rapportons une étude rétrospective des urgences chirurgicales néonatales colligées sur une période de 12 mois. Ont été inclus, tous les nouveau-nés admis dans le cadre d'une urgence chirurgicale, opérés ou non, durant la période néonatale. Les anomalies étaient dominées par 46,5 % par le tableau d'occlusion néonatale, 18,6 % des nouveau-nés avaient une atrésie de l'œsophage, 10,4 % une anomalie de la paroi abdominale, 9,3 % une anomalie thoracique et 5,8 % des anomalies neurologiques, 3,4 % admis pour des malformations de l'arbre urinaire et anomalies ORL et 2,3 % une cause tumorale. Sur le plan thérapeutique 79 % des nouveau-nés avaient bénéficié d'un geste chirurgical. L'évolution clinique est marquée par le décès de 32 patients, soit 37 %. Les urgences chirurgicales néonatales requièrent une prise en charge immédiate et adéquate. D'où l'intérêt du suivi des grossesses et du diagnostic anténatal et de l'examen systématique et minutieux du nouveau-né en salle de naissance afin d'améliorer la prise en charge et le pronostic. Neonatal surgical emergencies include conditions that require immediate and adequate management due to a vital or functional threat. Our paper aims to determine the frequency and epidemiological factors as well as the short- and long-term prognosis. We report a retrospective study of neonatal surgical emergencies collected over a period of 12 months. Included were all newborns admitted as part of a surgical emergency, operated on or not, during the neonatal period. The anomalies were dominated by 46.5% by the neonatal occlusion, 18.6% of the newborns had esophageal atresia, 10.4% an abdominal wall anomaly, 9.3% a thoracic anomaly and 5.8% neurological abnormalities, 3.4% admitted for malformations of the urinary tree and ENT abnormalities and 2.3% a tumor cause. Therapeutically, 79% of newborns had benefited from a surgical procedure. The clinical evolution is marked by the death of 32 patients that is 37%. Neonatal surgical emergencies require immediate and adequate management. Hence, the interest of monitoring pregnancies and antenatal diagnosis and systematic and careful examination of the newborn in the birth room in order to improve management and prognosis. Purpose: Vascular anomalies are classified as either vascular tumors or vascular malformations. Vascular malformations can be difficult to diagnose and treat in the pediatric population and can masquerade as malignant processes. Understanding the genetics behind vascular malformations can lead to identification of specific mutations which can be treated with targeted immunotherapy. Methods: Our case presents a pediatric patient with progressively enlarging vascular malformation despite multiple surgical resections and systemic medical treatments who underwent genetic evaluation and was found to have PIK3CA mutation. Results: After identification of PIK3CA mutation, our patient was successfully treated with the p110ɑ-specific inhibitor, alpelisib, with both shrinkage of malformation on follow-up imaging as well as gains in her developmental milestones. Conclusion: Progressive vascular malformations in the pediatric population can be hard to diagnose and treat and are thought to arise from somatic mutations. Our case highlights a patient with progressive malformation despite multiple surgical resections who was successfully treated with targeted immunotherapy after proper identification of genetic mutation. Simple Summary: This study investigated the sublethal effects of three insecticides (spirotetramat, cyantraniliprole, and pymetrozine) on Aphis gossypii. The effects of sublethal concentrations (LC10, LC30, LC50, and LC70) of the insecticides on the developmental period, survival rate, adult longevity, fecundity, and deformity rate were compared with those of the control. Spirotetramat and cyantraniliprole caused malformation in the F1 but not the F2 generation of A. gossypii. The net reproductive rate (R0) decreased significantly compared to that of the control (43.8) for all insecticides except cyantraniliprole at the LC10 (37.5). Therefore, sublethal concentrations (over the LC30) of the three insecticides could aid in the management of A. gossypii by affecting its population density. The toxicity and sublethal effects of three insecticides (spirotetramat, cyantraniliprole, and pymetrozine) on Aphis gossypii, a major agricultural pest, were investigated. The nymphal stage showed greater susceptibility than the adult stage to all the insecticides, with a difference of up to 8.9 times at the LC50 of spirotetramat. The effects of sublethal concentrations (LC10, LC30, LC50, and LC70) of the insecticides on the on the developmental period, survival rate, adult longevity, fecundity, and deformity rate were compared with those of the control. Compared with the control, cyantraniliprole and pymetrozine did not significantly affect the developmental period in the parental or F1 generation when applied at the nymphal stage at any concentration. Nonviable nymphs occurred in the F1 generation when both nymphs and adults were treated with spirotetramat and cyantraniliprole but not in the F2 generation. The age-specific maternity (lxmx) of A. gossypii treated with sublethal concentrations (LC10, LC30) decreased with increasing concentration. Spirotetramat at the LC30 resulted in significant differences in all life table parameters (R0, rm, λ, T, DT) compared with those of the control. Similarly, compared with that of the control (43.8), the net reproductive rate (R0) significantly decreased for all the insecticides except cyantraniliprole at the LC10 (37.5). Therefore, this study indicated that sublethal concentrations (over the LC30) of spirotetramat, cyantraniliprole, or pymetrozine might be useful for the density management of A. gossypii. Beak deformity have a frequency of 0.5% in wild bird populations. In addition to being rare, beak deformities are also poorly reported in the Brazilian scientific literature. Here we report beak deformities in the species: Dendrocincla merula, Amazona ochrocephala and Pheugopedius genibarbis, all of which occurred in southwestern Brazilian Amazon. Dendrocolaptids make intensive use of their beaks in the search for insects and small vertebrates, where they explore in cracks in wood with lateral blows. In the case presented here, this behaviour may have been the cause of the breakage of the tip of this individual's maxilla. In Brazilian territory, few species of parrots were recorded with deformity in the beak and in the individual in this work, everything indicates that Amazona ochrocephala was a captive animal, as it was excessively thin and its diet probably had a low content of vitamins and calcium, where their deficiency even when the animal was a puppy may have contributed to the deformity of the maxilla. Cases of beak deformities in species of the Troglodytidae family are rare, but the individual in this work presented an unusual curvature in the maxilla not observed in other individuals in museum collections. Blutaparon portulacoides (A.St.-Hil.), also known as capotirguá, pirrixu, and bredo-de-praia, is a bactericidal and anti-inflammatory agent used in folk medicine to treat leukorrhea. The present study evaluated the effects of an ethanolic extract of B. portulacoides (EEBp) on the reproductive performance, embryo-fetal development, and chromosomal stability of mice of pregnant female mice treated during the gestational period with oral EEBp (500 or 1000 mg/kg) or vehicle (1% Tween 80). EEBp did not alter biometric parameters, placental index, placental efficiency, or other parameters related to reproductive performance, neither embryo-fetal development and DNA integrity, but 500 and 1000 mg/kg EEBp decreased fetal and placental weight, respectively. Although the frequency of external and skeletal malformations did not differ between these groups and the control group, EEBp increased the frequency of reduced ossification of the presphenoid and xiphoid, which can be considered variants of normality. These findings indicate that EEBp is a safe and cost-effective treatment for leukorrhea during pregnancy, although caution should be exercised in its use. The Chinese deciduous fruit Prunus salicina Lindl is loved by people because of its distinctive flavor and significant industrial worth. This study presents the first report of abnormal leaf bud in Prunus salicina Lindl. Malformation of Prunus salicina Lindl leaf buds leads to abnormal development and growth, causing deformities and a decrease in fruit yield. Identifying the underlying causes and causative pathogens is essential for effective disease management. In this experiment, we observed the Malformation Syndrome in Prunus salicina Lindl and used the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) to compare fungal diversity between malformed and healthy leaf buds. These results show a higher level of fungal diversity in diseased leaf buds. Alternaria, Curvibasidium, Symmetrospora, Fonsecazyma, and other genera among the identified fungi are suspected to induce the malformations. Potential contributors to these malformations include Endophyte-plant_Pathogen and Plant_pathogen-Undefined_saprotroph. Background: Atlanto-axial (AA) subluxation can be a complex syndrome in dogs. Accurate identification and assessment of this condition are key to providing treatment and resolution. Aim: The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of AA subluxation and associated neurologic deficits. Methods: A multicenter review of dogs with a diagnosis of AA subluxation was conducted, evaluating signalment, neurologic grade, duration of signs, and MRI characteristics. MRI characteristics included degree of spinal cord compression and joint subluxation, integrity of odontoid ligaments, presence of a dens, spinal cord signal intensity, and presence of syringohydromyelia, hydrocephalus, and Chiari-like malformation. A control population with normal AA joints was also evaluated. MR images of 42 dogs with AA subluxation were compared to 26 age and breed-matched control dogs. Results: Affected dogs had a median age of 27 months and a median weight of 2.7 kg, and the most commonly affected breed was the Yorkshire terrier (47.5%). Spinal cord signal hyperintensity, increased AA joint size, and cross-sectional cord compression at the level of the dens and mid-body C2 were associated with AA subluxation. No associations were found between cord compression, the appearance of the dens, or cord signal intensity and neurologic grade. Affected dogs did not have a higher incidence of Chiari-like malformation, syringohydromyelia, or hydrocephalus than control dogs, and their neurologic grade was not associated with MRI findings. Lack of dens and/or odontoid ligaments was associated with larger subluxations. Conclusion: Dogs with clinical signs of AA subluxation were significantly more likely to have intramedullary hyperintensity at the level of compression (p = 0.0004), an increased AA joint cavity size (p = 0.0005), and increased spinal cord compression at the level of dens and mid-body C2 (p ≤ 0.05). The authors suggest an AA joint cavity size >1.4 mm and a subluxation distance >2.5 mm as cutoffs for MRI diagnosis of AA subluxation in dogs. Objectives: Single umbilical artery (SUA) is considered the most common abnormality of the umbilical artery. The objective of the study was to evaluate the perinatal prognosis of fetuses with SUA and to describe the associated malformations. The significance of the study is represented by examining whether our findings are in correlation with data already described. Methods: We performed a prospective cohort study on singleton pregnancies complicated with SUA. The study population was composed of women with singleton pregnancies who were examined at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Târgu Mures County Emergency Clinical Hospital between 2012 and 2021. Results: The incidence of SUA in the study population was 0.48%. C-section was performed in 40 cases with SUA and in 5258 cases with no SUA (RR:1.56, P<0.05.) From the total number of 2249 premature deliveries, 23 newborns were diagnosed with SUA (RR:2.12, P<0.05.) From the total number of 869 deliveries with low birth weight (LBW) newborns, 13 were associated with SUA (RR: 3.12, P<0.05.) There were 206 pregnancies noted with antenatal fetal demise after 24 weeks of gestation, and only 2 of them were with SUA (RR:2.01, P>0.05.) Fetal and neonatal malformations were described in 290 cases, and 28 were associated with SUA (R:21.96, P<0.05.) In 57 of 85 cases (67.05%), we found iSUA, and 28 newborns (32.95%) had minor, major, or other associated pathologies. We found two cases of trisomy 18 and one case with trisomy 13 associated with SUA. Investigating the malformations associated with SUA, the most common were cardiac and great vessels malformations (12), followed by limb malformations (8), urogenital malformations (7), digestive tract malformations (7), central nervous system malformations (4), and in one case we found cleft palate. Conclusions: Perinatal prognosis regarding SUA is significantly poorer than in cases without this pathology. One-third of fetuses with SUA were associated with fetal anomalies. The most common pathologies associated with SUA were cardiovascular, limb, urogenital, and digestive system malformations. Simple Summary: Malformations of the cervicothoracic junction have been described in modern horses as well as in skeletons from museums. In the present study, we examined five historical skeletons for signs of malformations of the cervicothoracic junction and were able to detect malformations of C6/C7 in three of the five historical horses. These three historical horses were the Thoroughbred stallions Dark Ronald XX, Der Loewe XX and Birkhahn XX. The two younger stallions Der Loewe XX and Birkhahn XX had a common great grandsire with Dark Ronald XX. Twenty living German Warmblood horses, descendants of these historical stallions, were recruited for evaluation for the malformation of C6/C7. For the modern horses, we estimated the inbreeding coefficient according to Wright through their ancestors of the last 110 years, which equals 11 generations, and quantified the blood percentages and the contribution to the inbreeding of the historical stallions in percentages. Our analyses showed that the C6/C7 malformations were highly variable in the historical horse family, with Dark Ronald XX, Der Loewe XX and Birkhahn XX being affected uni-laterally at C6 and C7, uni-laterally at C6 and bi-laterally at C6 and C7, respectively. In this sample of distant descendants of the historical stallions with C6/C7 malformation, a segregation between horses with and horses without C6/C7 malformation was demonstrated. Further studies with large samples and in-depth pedigree analyses will be warranted to show the effects of influential sires on the occurrence of malformations of the cervicothoracic junction in today's Warmblood population. Malformations of the equine cervicothoracic junction affect the C6 and C7 cervical vertebrae, the T1 thoracic vertebra and in variable extent the first and second sternal ribs. To date, the clinical impact of this malformation, its prevalence and mode of inheritance in equine populations are not yet determined. We examined five skeletons for signs of malformation of the cervicothoracic junction, including three skeletons from widely used Thoroughbred stallions affected with the malformation and two skeletons serving as a comparison. The three affected historical horses were the Thoroughbred stallions Der Loewe XX, Birkhahn XX and their common great grandsire Dark Ronald XX. Malformations of C6 and C7 showed a large variation between the three stallions, as Dark Ronald XX, Der Loewe XX and Birkhahn XX were affected uni-laterally at C6 and C7, uni-laterally at C6 and bi-laterally at C6 and C7, respectively, with varying grades. In order to evaluate whether or not these malformations are incidental, we took a random sample of 20 living German Warmblood horses, which are distant descendants of these stallions. This sample consisted of ten controls and ten horses with malformations of C6/C7. Blood proportions of the historical sires in the modern Warmblood horses ranged from 0.10 to 6.25%. The contribution to inbreeding in each individual horse of our selected horse group by those sires was expressed as a percentage of the total inbreeding coefficient and ranged from 0.01 to 17.96%, demonstrating their influence on the modern Warmblood. In the present study, we were able to describe the variability of the malformation of C6/C7 within a horse family including historic and modern horses. Additionally, we detected variations appearing in connection with malformations of the cervicothoracic junction that have not been described in the literature yet. This is the first time that the malformations of C6 and C7 have been described within a familial context, providing hints on inheritance in Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods. It is worthwhile to carry out further studies in a larger setting to gain more comprehensive insights into the inheritance of the malformation and the role of important ancestors. Gorlin‐Goltz syndrome (GGS) is an autosomal dominant multisystemic disease with high penetrance. Headache heralding GGS has been previously reported but without discussing potential sources. We report a patient with headache and a novel association (diastematomyelia), which helped with the diagnosis. A 46‐year‐old woman presented with persistent holocranial headache. On examination, countless hyperpigmented basal cell nevi over the face, pits over the palmar/plantar surface, and palmar and plantar keratosis were observed. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spinal cord revealed diastematomyelia. Diagnosis of GGS was finally made. Headache and diastematomyelia should be included in the clinical picture of GGS. Background and definition: In recent years thanks to the growing use of radiological assessment, Chiari I malformation became one of the major diseases for a neurosurgeon to deal with. CIM can be classified according to the extent of cerebellar tonsil tip into the foramen magnum being a protrusion over five mm considered pathological. Such a disease is a heterogeneous condition with a multifactorial pathogenetic mechanism that can subdivided into a primary and secondary form. Regardless of the form, it seems that CIM is the result of an imbalance between the volume of the braincase and its content. Acquired CIMs are secondary to conditions causing intracranial hypertension or hypotension while the pathogenesis of primary forms is still controversial. Pathogenesis and treatment: There are several theories in the literature but the most accepted one implies an overcrowding due to a small posterior cranial fossa. While asymptomatic CIM do not need treatment, symptomatic ones prompt for surgical management. Several techniques are proposed being the dilemma centered in the need for dural opening procedures and bony decompression ones. Conclusion: Alongside the paper, the authors will address the novelty presented in the literature on management, diagnosis and pathogenesis in order to offer a better understanding of such a heterogeneous pathology. Background: Annular pancreas (AP) is a congenital defect of unknown cause in which the pancreas encircles the duodenum. Theories include abnormal migration and rotation of the ventral bud, persistence of ectopic pancreatic tissue, and inappropriate fusion of the ventral and dorsal buds before rotation. The few reported familial cases suggest a genetic contribution. Methods: We conducted exome sequencing in 115 affected infants from the California birth defects registry. Results: Seven cases had a single heterozygous missense variant in IQGAP1, five of them with CADD scores >20; seven other infants had a single heterozygous missense variant in NRCAM, five of them with CADD scores >20. We also looked at genes previously associated with AP and found two rare heterozygous missense variants, one each in PDX1 and FOXF1. Conclusion: IQGAP1 and NRCAM are crucial in cell polarization and migration. Mutations result in decreased motility which could possibly cause the ventral bud to not migrate normally. To our knowledge, this is the first study reporting a possible association for IQGAP1 and NRCAM with AP. Our findings of rare genetic variants involved in cell migration in 15% of our population raise the possibility that AP may be related to abnormal cell migration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To review hearing and surgical outcomes after reconstructive middle ear surgery in class 4 congenital middle ear anomalies (CMEA), e.g., patients with oval- or round window atresia of dysplasia. Data sources: Pubmed/Medline, Embase and Cochrane library. Review methods: Articles containing data on hearing outcomes and complications after reconstructive ear surgery in class 4 anomalies were analyzed and critically appraised. The following data were included and reviewed: patient demographics, audiometric testing, surgical techniques, complications, revision surgeries and their outcomes. Risk of bias was determined, and GRADE certainty of evidence was assessed. Primary outcomes were postoperative air conduction thresholds (AC), change in AC, and success rates (closure of the ABG to within 20 dB), the occurrence of complications (most importantly sensorineural hearing loss) and the long-term stability of hearing results (> 6-month follow-up) and occurrence of recurrence of preoperative hearing loss. Results: Success rates varied from 12.5 to 75% at long-term follow-up with larger cohorts reporting success rates around 50%, mean postoperative gain in AC varied from 4.7 to 30 dB and − 8.6 to 23.6 dB at, respectively, short- and long-term follow-up. No postoperative change in hearing occurred in 0–33.3% of ears, and recurrence of hearing loss occurred in 0–66.7% of ears. SNHL occurred in a total of seven ears across all studies of which three experienced complete hearing loss. Conclusion: Reconstructive surgery can be an effective treatment option which should be considered in patients with very favorable baseline parameters, while also considering the substantial risk of recurrence of hearing loss, the possibility of unchanged hearing despite surgery and the rare occurrence of SNHL. Hamartomas are tumor-like masses comprising disorganized normal tissue elements. To date, spontaneous hamartomas have been reported in several organs and tissues in rodents but not in the lungs. Here, we report the first case of a hamartoma in the lungs of a 108-week-old female Wistar Hannover rat. Grossly, a white spot, 7 mm in diameter, was observed on the costal surface of the left lung. Histopathologically, the nodular lesions adjacent to the bronchioles comprised mature smooth muscle cells. The lesion was not encapsulated and spread along the alveolar walls and ducts without compression of the surrounding tissue. In the nodules, elastic fibers enclosed small lumens lined with factor VIII-related antigen-positive endothelial cells. This structure suggested that the nodule mimicked an artery. Moreover, structural abnormalities were observed within the bronchioles and arterioles owing to the increased number of smooth muscle cells in the surrounding tissues. These features suggested that this was a case of tissue malformation rather than a neoplasm, leading to the diagnosis of a smooth muscle hamartoma of the lung. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the vestibular endolymphatic hydrops in patients with semicircular canal malformation. We searched 7864 patients who underwent MR Imaging after contrast injection and found 21 patients with semicircular canal malformations. Another 9 non-malformed patients with unilateral hearing loss were randomly included. We asked patients about their medical history and measured the volume of total vestibular fluid space and endolymphatic space. The vestibular volume ratio = endolymphatic space/total fluid space × 100. Hearing loss was observed in 18 of 30 malformed ears and in 7 of 12 non-malformed ears. Statistical analysis showed no association between semicircular canal malformation and hearing loss. In the semicircular canal malformation group, the average vestibular volume ratio (22.6%) in the ears with hearing loss was higher than that in the ears without hearing loss (11.4%). There was no statistically significant difference in the average vestibular %EL in ears with hearing loss between the malformed inner ear group (22.6%) and non-malformed group (28.2%) (P>0.05). There was no correlation between semicircular canal malformation and hearing loss. The mean vestibular hydrops volume ratio of the semicircular canal deformed ears with hearing loss was about 22.6%, which was not different from that of normal ears. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Prenatal diagnosis of a rare disease on ultrasound relies on a physician's ability to remember an intractable amount of knowledge. We developed a real‐time decision support system (DSS) that suggests, at each step of the examination, the next phenotypic feature to assess, optimizing the diagnostic pathway to the smallest number of possible diagnoses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of this real‐time DSS using clinical data. Methods: This validation study was conducted on a database of 549 perinatal phenotypes collected from two referral centers (one in France and one in the UK). Inclusion criteria were: at least one anomaly was visible on fetal ultrasound after 11 weeks' gestation; the anomaly was confirmed postnatally; an associated rare disease was confirmed or ruled out based on postnatal/postmortem investigation, including physical examination, genetic testing and imaging; and, when confirmed, the syndrome was known by the DSS software. The cases were assessed retrospectively by the software, using either the full phenotype as a single input, or a stepwise input of phenotypic features, as prompted by the software, mimicking its use in a real‐life clinical setting. Adjudication of discordant cases, in which there was disagreement between the DSS output and the postnatally confirmed ('ascertained') diagnosis, was performed by a panel of external experts. The proportion of ascertained diagnoses within the software's top‐10 differential diagnoses output was evaluated, as well as the sensitivity and specificity of the software to select correctly as its best guess a syndromic or isolated condition. Results: The dataset covered 110/408 (27%) diagnoses within the software's database, yielding a cumulative prevalence of 83%. For syndromic cases, the ascertained diagnosis was within the top‐10 list in 93% and 83% of cases using the full‐phenotype and stepwise input, respectively, after adjudication. The full‐phenotype and stepwise approaches were associated, respectively, with a specificity of 94% and 96% and a sensitivity of 99% and 84%. The stepwise approach required an average of 13 queries to reach the final set of diagnoses. Conclusions: The DSS showed high performance when applied to real‐world data. This validation study suggests that such software can improve perinatal care, efficiently providing complex and otherwise overlooked knowledge to care‐providers involved in ultrasound‐based prenatal diagnosis. © 2023 The Authors. Background: Spinal lipomas not associated with dysraphism are rare and have an unknown natural history. In this report, we describe two cases; they showed recurrence during long-term follow-up, which makes us doubt a benign malformative etiology. Case reports: Two patients, a 19-year-old South American woman and a 14-year-old boy with spinal lipomas, underwent surgical resection. The lipomas were not associated with dysraphism and were located in the cervicothoracic and craniocervical junctions. In both cases, we decided to operate due to clinical progression; the former had a progressive natural course, and the latter experienced clinical worsening after recurrence from previous surgeries. The surgery took place with the assistance of neurophysiological monitoring and intraoperative ultrasound; a partial resection and medullary decompression were done, following the more recent recommendations. Discussion: The natural history of these lesions is currently unknown due to their rarity and the heterogeneity in the long-term follow-up of previously reported cases. Although previous reports describe good outcomes after surgical resection, long follow-ups, especially in young subjects, may show differences in these outcomes with progression and recurrence. We contribute to this last piece of evidence by describing two more cases of progression and recurrence. Lessons: Long-term close follow-up should be done in young subjects with spinal lipomas, as they are more prone to an aggressive course. Observations of skeletal malformations in fish in the wild are poorly documented and need to be investigated. Here we report the occurrence of body shortening in specimens of Plagioscion squamosissimus collected in the Volta Grande do Xingu, middle Xingu River region (Pará, Brazil), during a 12-month monitoring program (2021–2022). We observed morphological anomalies in nine individuals, of which two underwent radiographic analysis, recording the fusion and compression of vertebrae in different portions of the spine. Wild animals are increasingly exposed to human‐induced threats in the ocean realm. Cetacean species, as predators and biomonitoring models, are subjected to a variety of stressors that may result in poor health, injuries, and persistent marks. These malformations can easily be documented by photography or video and can be used to infer about the animals' health, especially if combined with long‐term photographic identification. However, the value of such information for monitoring is vastly increased if a standardised language is used. We provide a broad definition of deformity, as a general concept for conditions or abnormal features in cetacean species, and categorise externally detected deformities in free‐ranging individuals.We define six categories and 58 sub‐categories of deformities in cetaceans: anatomical malformations (11 sub‐categories), skin lesions (29), anomalous pigmentation (4), injuries due to physical impacts (14), emaciation, and epibionts.Categorisation was based on peer‐reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2021 (n = 253 studies), comprising 80 of the 101 extant species, documented in studies conducted across 50 countries; reviewed literature included papers from 86 scientific journals, with three journals contributing 100 out of the 253 documents.Overall, and for both Odontoceti and Mysticeti, physical impact was the most reported category; injuries due to physical impacts were documented in 74% of the 253 studies we reviewed. This may be related to the common exposure of cetaceans to intense human marine traffic and fishing activities.Especially with the growing use of open science, a consistent and common language is fundamental for data comparison and to support cetacean research, management and conservation efficiently. Purpose: Malformations of the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) range from mild, asymptomatic conditions to severe forms of instability with basilar invagination. Rarely, there have been accounts of forms of so-called paramedian basilar invagination, with abnormal bone masses invading the lateral portion of the foramen magnum. All these entities have been comprehensively classified both from an anatomical and embryological standpoint. Methods: Here, we report a case of a unique CVJ malformation which is not included in any existing classification framework and could represent a novel pathologic entity. We also provide an overview of the pertinent literature. Results: The patient was a 14-year-old boy with a recent onset of spastic tetraparesis. Radiological studies documented a malformation of the atlas which invaginated through the foramen magnum, causing anterolateral medullary incarceration. Surgical treatment involved posterior decompression with resection of the abnormal bone and occipito-cervical fusion. Conclusion: Our report enriches the panorama of CVJ malformations, showing how anatomical knowledge and embryological insights constitute the basis for the correct assessment and treatment of these complex entities. This paper constructs an interdisciplinary and intersectional heuristic of childhood religious trauma and abuse (RTA) by weaving together psychological and theo-philosophical literature with Rebecca Nye's theory of childhood spiritual development. The paper argues that RTA distorts a child's relationship with God leading to lifelong effects. It describes how America's prejudice against children further facilitates religious trauma and abuse and outlines needed theological and structural changes from the perspective of religious education. Objectives: To compile a list of instant diagnoses of major fetal anomalies, and to present their sonographic descriptors and test them in a retrospective series of fetuses with congenital anomalies managed at our center. Methods: The first step was to identify major anomalies that meet the following criteria: (1) can be diagnosed directly and unequivocally on the basis of a set of descriptors evident on a single sonographic view; (2) are among those more commonly diagnosed in utero; (3) represent major lethal or life‐threatening malformations or anomalies for which no or only palliative surgery can be performed. For each of these anomalies, a sonographic descriptor was produced. The second step was to test the descriptors of the instant diagnoses in all cases with these anomalies evaluated since January 2000 in our Fetal Medicine Unit, retrieved from our electronic database. For each congenital anomaly–sonographic descriptor pair we then evaluated the presence vs absence of an unequivocal relationship between anomaly and descriptor, assessing: whether a particular descriptor in a set reference plane identified unequivocally the anomaly, i.e. the same descriptor could not be found in any other malformation; and whether a particular anomaly presented the corresponding descriptor in all cases. Finally, we evaluated whether the sonographic descriptors could be applied in all trimesters or only selectively, considering the natural history of the 20 instant diagnoses. Results: Of the 20 instant diagnoses, five involved the central/peripheral nervous system (exencephaly/anencephaly, alobar/semilobar holoprosencephaly, cephalocele, open spinal dysraphism, complete agenesis of corpus callosum), five involved the heart (hypoplastic left heart syndrome, complete atrioventricular septal defect, severe Ebstein's anomaly, critical aortic stenosis, transposition of the great arteries), five involved the abdominal wall (left‐sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia, exomphalos, gastroschisis, body‐stalk anomaly) or gastrointestinal tract (duodenal atresia), and five involved the remaining systems (three urinary (autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, multicystic dysplastic kidney, lower urinary tract obstruction), two skeletal (transverse limb defect, radial ray defect)). All of the descriptors were found to identify unequivocally the related malformations, whereas four of the malformations were not associated with their reference descriptors in every case. For example, congenital diaphragmatic hernia (left‐sided) presented without the stomach in the thorax in 42/93 (45.2%) cases. Due to the natural history of the condition, not all signs were recognizable in the first trimester, some becoming evident only from the second trimester onwards. Conclusion: We have defined sonographic descriptors that enable an unequivocal instant diagnosis for a list of 20 major congenital anomalies: the 'INDIAMAN‐20' (INstant DIAgnosis of Major ANomalies) protocol. We believe that using this approach may facilitate focused training of less experienced operators and that it may be incorporated into artificial intelligence and deep learning protocols, further boosting the instant prenatal recognition of these lethal or life‐threatening malformations. © 2022 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The study of the placenta is of great importance, not only in the attempt to understand the etiopathogenesis of various maternal-fetal pathologies, but also in the attempt to understand whether it is possible to find the cause of pathological neonatal outcomes. On the other hand, abnormalities of blood vessel formation, such as angiodysplasias, have been poorly characterised in the literature, and there is a need for more studies investigating the potential impact on the fetus. In this paper, we retrospectively analysed 2063 placentas received at the Department of Pathology of the University of Bari 'Aldo Moro', among which we identified 70 placentas affected by angiodysplasia. On these placentas, we carried out histochemical staining with Masson's Trichrome, orcein-alcian blue, and, subsequently, immunostaining with anti-CD31, CD34, and desmin and actin muscle smoothness antibodies. Finally, we performed a morphometric analysis on the allantochorionic and truncal vessels and correlated the results with neonatal outcomes. We studied the characteristics of the angiodysplasias in detail, dividing the patients into two classes (A and B) according to the morphology and histochemical characteristics of the affected vessels; statistical analysis reported a statistically significant association (p < 0.05) between the ratio of maximum thickness to maximum diameter (Tmax/Dmax) and neonatal outcome, with only 30% physiological outcome in the cohort of the placentas affected by angiodysplasia. These results shed light on a rather neglected aspect in the 2015 Amsterdam Classification, as well as in the literature, and provided strong evidence that placental angiodysplasia is predictive of an increased likelihood of the pathological fetal outcome, while other factors remain in the field. Prenatal diagnosis of fetal brain abnormalities is rapidly evolving with the advancement of neuroimaging techniques, thus adding value to prognostic counseling and perinatal management. However, challenges and uncertainties persist in prenatal counseling due to limitations of prenatal imaging, continued development and maturation of the brain structure, and the heterogeneity and paucity of outcome studies. This topical review of fetal neurological consultations highlights prenatally diagnosed brain abnormalities that challenged prognostic counseling and perinatal management. Representative cases across multiple centers that highlighted diagnostic challenges were selected. Charts were reviewed for neuroimaging, genetic evaluation, prenatal prognostic discussion, postnatal imaging and testing, and infant outcome. We present case studies with prenatal and postnatal information discussing prenatal testing, fetal MRI interpretation, and complexities in the prognostic counseling process. Advocating for large-scale multicenter studies and a national collaborative fetal neurological registry to help guide the ever-expanding world of prenatal diagnostics and prognostic counseling is critical to this field. Study of large-scale outcomes data from such a registry can better guide fetal neurological consultations and facilitate comprehensive multidisciplinary planning and program development for educational curriculum for fetal-neonatal neurology. Simple Summary: Due to the widespread practice of tail docking in sheep, no data exist regarding the incidence of caudal spine deformities and injuries in this species. The aim of this study was to describe the type and frequency of tail abnormalities in an undocked Merinoland sheep population using radiographic studies. The findings demonstrated that anomalies of the tail bones (such as fractures and block or wedged vertebrae) were predominantly found in the middle and caudal third of the spine. Additionally, a correlation between the occurrence of vertebral fractures and the tail length and number of vertebrae was observed. No significant differences were found in terms of different litter sizes and sex. These results suggest that the proportion of animals with tail malformations and injuries is relatively high, which should be considered when breeding for short tails in the context of a docking ban. As tails are often docked within the first days of life, studies investigating tail malformations and injuries in sheep do not exist thus far. To address this gap in the literature, this research aimed to analyse the occurrence of vertebral anomalies and fractures in the tail within an undocked Merinoland sheep population. At 14 weeks of age, the caudal spines of 216 undocked Merinoland lambs was radiographically examined, and tail length and circumference were measured. Anomalies were documented and statistical correlation and model calculations were performed. The occurrence of block vertebrae was observed in 12.96% and wedged vertebrae in 8.33% of the sample. Of the animals, 59 (27.31%) exhibited at least one vertebral fracture, which were observed in the middle and caudal third of the tail. A significant correlation was found between the occurrence of fractures and tail length (r = 0.168) and number of vertebrae (r = 0.155). Conversely, the presence of block and wedged vertebrae was not significantly correlated with tail length, circumference, or number of vertebrae. Only the sex showed significant differences in the probability of axis deviation. These results emphasize the importance of breeding for short tails to avoid fractures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cerebral cortex represents a laminar structure of precisely spatially organized neurons in horizontal layers and vertical columns. Neurogenesis, neuronal migration and neuronal wiring are tightly regulated and coordinated procedures that result in the accurate formation of the human cerebral cortex. Abnormal fetal corticogenesis results in several types of migration and gyration anomalies, known as malformations of cortical development, which have long been a topic of investigation. According to the stage of cortical development that is affected, with diverse genetic and non-genetic etiologies, these malformations can cause abnormal head size, abnormal brain surface and abnormal cortical layering with various degrees of neurodevelopmental delay and epilepsy. The pathogenesis of these malformations is multifactorial and includes genetic mutations or environmental insults, acquired either in utero at varying stages of brain development or during the perinatal period after corticogenesis. In this article, we focus on cortical malformations detected on fetal MRI. We present the main antenatal findings that should raise suspicion for malformations of cortical development, together with findings that might be missed on prenatal imaging and describe the correlations between fetal and postnatal MRI. Simple Summary: The chest bone, or sternum, protects the heart and lungs and aids in breathing motion. It is included on chest radiographs of dogs and cats, but little information is available for veterinarians on what abnormalities or diseases affect the chest bone in companion animals. We reassessed chest radiographs of dogs and cats taken in our hospital over a 2 year period to describe these changes. We found that abnormalities of the chest bone were visible in 24% of dogs and 29% of cats, with the most common abnormality being age-related degeneration. Most of the abnormalities noted were of minor clinical importance, but in some animals, conditions that could be painful or otherwise affect well-being were seen. Evaluation of the sternum is part of the routine examination of small animal thoracic radiographs. However, descriptions on frequency and type of abnormalities are lacking. This retrospective observational study aimed to describe abnormal radiographic findings of the sternum in a cross-section of client-owned dogs and cats undergoing thoracic radiography between 1 January 2019 and 1 January 2021 for reasons unrelated to diseases of the sternum. The study population consisted of 777 dogs (mean age, 7.3 ± 3.9 years) and 183 cats (mean age, 7.3 ± 5.1 years). Sternal abnormalities were observed in 189/777 (24%) dogs and 53/183 (29%) cats, mostly around the intersternebral cartilages, accounting for 32/80 (40%) dogs and 20/35 (57%) cats. This was followed by an abnormal number of sternal segments (8% dogs, range 3–9 sternebrae; 15% cats, range 7–9 sternebra). Pectus excavatum was observed in 6/777 (0.8%) dogs and 6/183 (3%) cats, and pectus carinatum in 18/777 (2%) dogs and 2/183 (1%) cats. Post-traumatic changes, such as subluxation, were observed in nine dogs (1.1%) and three cats (1.6%). Presumed prostatic carcinoma metastasis and malignant lymphoma were observed in two dogs (0.2%). Introduction: vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation (VOGM) is a low-frequency congenital anomaly, but with high lethality. Objective: we present a neonate with VOGM type II. Clinical case: male newborn with prenatal diagnosis by fetal sonography of VOGM. He was born at 37 weeks of gestation. He suffered intraventricular hemorrhage and hydrocephalus in the neonatal period. At two months of age, endovascular embolization was performed; However, he died at five months of age due to thrombosis of the superior longitudinal sinus, massive cerebral hemorrhage, and intracranial hypertension. Piper glabratum Kunth is a plant traditionally used to treat pain and inflammation in the Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Even pregnant women consume this plant. Toxicology studies of the ethanolic extract from the leaves of P. glabratum (EEPg) could establish the safety of popular use of P. glabratrum. Thus, the effects of the ethanolic extract of leaves of P. glabratum (EEPg) on the reproductive performance and embryofetal development of Swiss mice were evaluated. Pregnant female mice were treated with 100, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg throughout the gestational period by gavage (p.o). The control group received the EEPg vehicle (Tween 80–1%) in the proportion of 0.1 mL/10 g (p.o.). The results demonstrated that EEPg has low maternal toxic potential and does not alter the reproductive performance of females. However, it altered embryofetal development and caused fetal weight reduction (increasing the frequency of small-for-gestational-age fetuses) at the two highest doses. In addition, it interfered with placental weight, placental index and placental efficiency. The frequency of visceral malformations increased by 2.8 times for the lowest dose of EEPg, and skeletal malformations increased by 2.48, 1.89 and 2.11 times for doses of 100, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg of EEPg, respectively. It is noteworthy that 100% of the offspring treated with EEPg showed changes in the ossification process. Thus, it is considered that the EEPg has low maternal toxic potential; it does not alter the reproductive performance of females. Introduction: Body stalk anomaly is a severe defect of the abdominal wall, characterized by the evisceration of abdominal organs and, in more severe cases, thoracic organs as well. The most serious condition in a body stalk anomaly may be complicated by ectopia cordis, an abnormal location of the heart outside the thorax. The aim of this scientific work is to describe our experience with the prenatal diagnosis of ectopia cordis as part of the first-trimester sonographic screening for aneuploidy. Methods: We report two cases of body stalk anomalies complicated by ectopia cordis. The first case was identified during a first ultrasound examination at 9 weeks of gestation. The second was identified during an ultrasound examination at 13 weeks of gestation. Both of these cases were diagnosed using high-quality 2- and 3-dimensional ultrasonographic images obtained by the Realistic Vue and Crystal Vue techniques. The chorionic villus sampling showed that the fetal karyotype and CGH-array were both normal. Results: In our clinical case reports, the patients, immediately after the diagnosis of a body stalk anomaly complicated by ectopia cordis, opted for the termination of pregnancies. Conclusion: Performing an early diagnosis of a body stalk anomaly that is complicated by ectopia cordis is desirable, considering their poor prognoses. Most of the reported cases in the literature suggest that an early diagnosis can be made between 10 and 14 weeks of gestation. A combination of 2- and 3-dimensional sonography could allow an early diagnosis of body stalk anomalies complicated by ectopia cordis, particularly using new ultrasonographic techniques, the Realistic Vue and the Crystal Vue. Lymphangiomas are developmental malformations that present as benign hamartomas of lymphatic channels. They present at birth or before two years of age, with 50-70% predilection for the head and neck region and less frequently reported in the oral cavity. However, affected sites in the oral cavity include the tongue, palate, gingiva, buccal mucosa, lips and alveolar ridge. Lymphangioma of the buccal mucosa is rare, only 27 cases of lymphangioma of buccal mucosa have been reported till date, out of which seven were in children. The prognosis is good for most patients, but recurrence has also been reported in some cases. This present case is of Lymphangioma Circumscriptum in a 13-year-old child involving right buccal mucosa and lip since birth. This lesion was surgically removed under general anaesthesia and there was a recurrence of the lesion after one year of follow-up. In the literature there was no reported case of Lymphangioma Circumscriptum involving the lip of a child, so this present case was the first reported case of Lymphangioma Circumscripta involving the lip in a child with recurrence. In March 2022, the Summary of Product Characteristics for the Lyrica brand of pregabalin was updated with warnings regarding malformation risks. This literature review and critical appraisal aims to explore whether these Summary of Product Characteristics updates are justified and provide clarity on the risk–benefit balance for pregabalin use in early pregnancy. A literature review was conducted in May 2022 to identify English language comparative studies of any design providing data about first trimester maternal pregabalin use and malformation risk. Five observational comparative cohort studies using data from 9 distinct datasets were located. Collectively these studies described at least 5300 unique pregabalin exposed pregnancies, with 4900 exposed in at least the first trimester. Three studies investigated overall major malformation risks, and 4 investigated specific malformation risks. The available evidence was found to be conflicting and generally of low quality, probably influenced by bias and data confounding, with no clear pattern of specific malformations observed. Findings from the largest study suggested absolute risks of major malformation of 4.8–5.6%, relative to a background risk of approximately 4%. Due to study methodology limitations, the available data were judged to only provide low quality evidence suggestive of a possible and unconfirmed small increased risk that cannot be solely attributed to foetal pregabalin exposure. This literature review and critical appraisal indicates that the Lyrica product literature updates are insufficiently substantiated and could result in confusion and misinformed clinical risk–benefit decision making.
