The quest for lowering energy consumption during thin film growth by magnetron sputtering techniques becomes of particular importance in view of sustainable development goals. As large fraction of the process energy is consumed in substrate heating for the purpose of providing high adatom mobility necessary to grow dense films, the most straightforward strategy toward more environment-friendly processing is to find alternatives to thermally activated surface diffusion. One possibility is offered by high mass metal ion irradiation of the growing film surface, which has been recently shown to be very effective in densification of transition metal nitride layers grown with no external heating, such that Zone 2 microstructures of the structure-zone model are obtained in the substrate temperature Ts range otherwise typical for Zone 1 growth. The large mass difference between the incident ion and the atoms constituting the film results in effective creation of low energy recoils, which leads to film densification at low Ts. Due to their high mass, metal ions become incorporated at lattice sites beyond the near-surface region of intense recoil generation leading to further densification, while preventing the buildup of residual stress. The practical implementation of this technique discussed in this Perspective employs heavy metal targets operating in the high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) mode to provide periodic metal-ion fluxes that are accelerated in the electric field of the substrate to irradiate layers deposited from direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS) sources. A key feature of this hybrid HiPIMS/DCMS configuration is the substrate bias that is synchronized with heavy metal ion fluxes for selective control of their energy and momentum. As a consequence, the major fraction of process energy is used at sputtering sources and for film densification, rather than for heating of the entire vacuum vessel. Model material systems include TiN and metastable NaCl-structure Ti1−yAlyN films, which are well-known for challenges in stoichiometry and phase stability control, respectively, and are of high relevance for industrial applications. This Perspective provides a comprehensive overview of the novel film growth method. After presenting basic concepts, time-resolved measurements of ion fluxes at the substrate plane, essential for selective control of metal ion energy and momentum, are discussed. The role of metal ion mass, energy, momentum, and concentration is described in more detail. As some applications require substrate rotation for conformal coating, a section is devoted to the related complexity in the implementation of metal-ion-synchronized growth under industrial conditions. Intermolecular Coulombic decay or electron transfer-mediated decay are the autoionization processes through which a molecule can relax. This relaxation is only possible if the inner valence's ionization potential (IP) exceeds the system's double ionization potential (DIP). To study the effects of charge and solvation shell, we have calculated the IP, DIP values, and lifetime of Na-2s and Mg-2s temporary bound states in various optimized structures of Na+-(H2O)n and Mg2+-(H2O)n (n = 1–5) micro-solvated clusters, where n water molecules are distributed in a way that some are directly bound to the metal ion and the rest to the water molecules. The first and second solvation shells are the names for the former and the latter water-binding positions, respectively. For a given n, the lifetime of decaying states is longer when water molecules are in the second solvation shell. We found that the Mg-2p state can decay for all n values in Mg2+-(H2O)n clusters, whereas the Na-2p state's decay is possible for n ≥ 2 in Na+-(H2O)n clusters. Our findings highlight the influence of metal ions' charge, different solvation shell structures, and the number of water molecules on the decay rate. We present a Raman scattering spectroscopic study of boron imidazolate metal-organic frameworks (BIFs) with three different magnetic metal ions and one non-magnetic in a wide frequency range from 25 to 1700 cm−1, which covers local vibrations of the imidazolate linkers as well as collective lattice vibrations. We show that the spectral region above 800 cm−1 belongs to the local vibrations of the linkers, which have the same frequencies for the studied BIFs without any dependence on the structure of the BIFs and are easily interpreted based on the spectra of imidazolate linkers. In contrast, collective lattice vibrations, observed below 100 cm−1, show a distinction between cage and two-dimensional BIFs structures, with a weak dependence on the metal node. We identify the range of vibrations around 200 cm−1, which are distinct for each metal-organic framework, depending on a metal node. Ultrathin continuous metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes have the potential to achieve high gas permeance and selectivity simultaneously for otherwise difficult gas separations, but with few exceptions for zeolitic‐imidazolate frameworks (ZIF) membranes, current methods cannot conveniently realize practical large‐area fabrication. Here, we propose a ligand back diffusion‐assisted bipolymer‐directed metal ion distribution strategy for preparing large‐area ultrathin MOF membranes on flexible polymeric support layers. The bipolymer directs metal ions to form a cross‐linked two‐dimensional (2D) network with a uniform distribution of metal ions on support layers. Ligand back diffusion controls the feed of ligand molecules available for nuclei formation, resulting in the continuous growth of large‐area ultrathin MOF membranes. We report the practical fabrication of three representative defect‐free MOF membranes with areas larger than 2,400 cm2 and ultrathin selective layers (50–130 nm), including ZIFs and carboxylate‐linker MOFs. Among these, the ZIF‐8 membrane displays high gas permeance of 3,979 GPU for C3H6, with good mixed gas selectivity (43.88 for C3H6/C3H8). To illustrate its scale‐up practicality, MOF membranes were prepared and incorporated into spiral‐wound membrane modules with an active area of 4,800 cm2. We report the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of a 3d6 Cr(0) complex ([Cr(LMes)3]; λem=735 nm) with comparable photophysical properties to those of ECL‐active complexes of 4d6 or 5d6 precious metal ions. The electrochemical potentials of [Cr(LMes)3] are more negative than those of [Ir(ppy)3] and render the [Cr(LMes)3]* excited state inaccessible through conventional co‐reactant ECL with tri‐n‐propylamine or oxalate. ECL can be obtained, however, through the annihilation route in which potentials sufficient to oxidise and reduce the luminophore are alternately applied. When combined with [Ir(ppy)3] (λem=520 nm), the annihilation ECL of [Cr(LMes)3] was greatly enhanced whereas that of [Ir(ppy)3] was diminished. Under appropriate conditions, the relative intensities of the two spectrally distinct emissions can be controlled through the applied potentials. Transition and rare earth metals serve as indispensable raw materials across a broad spectrum of technological applications. However, their utilization is frequently linked to substantial waste production. Consequently, the recycling and recovery of these metals from end-of-life products or metal-contaminated aqueous environments hold significant importance within the framework of a circular economy. In our investigation, we employed synthetic mesoporous silica monoliths, synthesized via the sol–gel method and functionalized with chelating groups, for the efficient recovery of metal ions from aqueous matrices. The monoliths were characterized using a multi-technique approach and were tested in the recovery of paramagnetic Gd3+, Cu2+ and Co2+ ions from aqueous solutions, using 1H-NMR relaxometry to evaluate their uptake performance in real time and under simple conditions. The use of efficient photocatalysts to remove mixed pollutants from wastewater is of significance for environmental remediation. In this work, a novel conjugated microporous polymer (TAPP-PD-CMP) was synthesized and applied as a visible light driven photocatalyst to simultaneously remove a heavy metal ion and an organic pollutant. TAPP-PD-CMP possesses a large specific surface area (375 m2 g−1), narrow band gap (1.76 eV) and good chemical and thermal (∼450 °C) stabilities. More importantly, the energy band structure of TAPP-PD-CMP (ELUMO = 0.23 eV and EHOMO = 1.99 eV) enables adequate band edge potentials for photoreduction of a heavy metal ion (Cr(VI)) and photooxidation of an organic pollutant (RhB). Experimental results demonstrate that TAPP-PD-CMP has excellent adsorption-photocatalytic performance towards Cr(VI) (90%, 3 h) and RhB (94%, 3 h) from mixed contaminant wastewater at the same time. Additionally, TAPP-PD-CMP, as an environmentally-friendly photocatalyst, exhibits recyclability and sustainability. Radical trapping experiments reveal a synergistic photocatalytic mechanism, and the excellent photocatalytic activity is ascribed to continuous consumption of electrons and holes, reducing the recombination of photo-generated electron–holes. One of the major concerns worldwide is the rapid increase in water pollution with hazardous heavy metals. The Cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) structure provides an inner hydrophobic cavity accessible through two electrostatically negative portals with polar carbonyl groups, allowing for charged ion–dipole interaction between cationic species with excellent binding affinities. In this work we selected CB[5], and CB[7] for the titrimetric and electrochemical evaluation of the heavy metal complexes formed with Copper(II), Cadmium(II) and Lead(II). The host–guest interaction was found by either attenuation of the redox peaks, the formation of a new peak, or the slight shift in the redox peaks of the heavy metal ions. Titration data were obtained for CB[n] with the heavy metal solutions to determine the molar coefficient of binding. The stoichiometry of the complexes was 1 : 1 by Job′s plot. We calculated the binding constants using the Benesi–Hildebrand method achieving relatively good binding constants (K) ranging from (1.80±0.14)×105–(4.98±0.13)×105 M−1. The results showed that the complexes of Cadmium(II) and Lead(II) with both CB[5] and CB[7] are highly stable in aqueous media. Copper(II) was able to bind to the smaller sized portal of CB[5], whereas with CB[7] the heavy metal ion could not form a favourable complex. Lanthanide complexes of DO3A‐derivative ligands bearing a pyridine‐carbamate (L1) or pyridine‐amine (L2) arm have potential interest in the design of enzymatically activated imaging probes. Solid‐state X‐ray structures for CeL1 and YbL2 both demonstrate twisted square antiprismatic geometry, with the metal ion in a nine‐ or an eight‐coordinate environment, respectively. As assessed by pH‐potentiometry, in solution lanthanide ions form more stable complexes with the nonadentate L1 than with the octadentate L2 ligand (logKML=18.7–21.1 vs. 16.7–18.6, respectively), while stability constants are similar for L1 and L2 chelates of Mg2+, Ca2+, Zn2+ or Cu2+. The kinetic inertness of GdL1 is exceptionally high, with an estimated dissociation half‐life of ~108 h at pH 7.4, while LnL2 (Ln=Ce, Gd, Yb) complexes have 3–4 orders of magnitude faster dissociation, related to the presence of the protonatable, non‐coordinating amine function. The water exchange rate determined for the monohydrated GdL2 (kex298=1.3×106 s−1) shows a threefold decrease with respect to GdDOTA, as a consequence of a reduction in the negative charge and in the steric crowding around the water binding site, both important in dissociatively activated water exchange processes. The unsatisfactory material quality of absorber is an important factor limiting the development of Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) thin‐film solar cells, including poor crystallization, multi‐layer structure, and various defects. Here, an effective strategy to enhance the quality of kesterite absorber and improve the performance of solar cells is proposed by tailoring the additional sequence of metal ions in precursor solution. With an addition sequence S─Sn─Cu─Zn (STCZ), higher values of Cu+/Cu2+ and Sn4+/Sn2+ ratios are obtained, and the surface grain growth is modulated into an inclined growth mode. Consequently, the decomposition of CZTSSe bulk is suppressed and its final morphology presents mainly as large grains spanning across the absorber. The quality of absorber and its interface is enhanced with activating the desirable shallow acceptor and reducing recombination center defects. An encouraging efficiency of over 12% for CZTSSe solar cells with increased short‐circuit current density and fill factor is realized. This novel strategy provides insight into crystallization mechanism of kesterite photovoltaic material and has guiding significance for further improving material crystallization and absorber quality. The formation of metallo-cages is affected by a variety of factors such as the ligands, metals, and anions, among which the impact of metals with different binding capacities is particularly important, but has rarely been studied in three-dimensional metallo-cages. Herein, we report the design of truxene-centered terpyridine ligands and the self-assembly of a series of tetrameric metallo-cages. The utilization of metal ions with strong (Zn2+, Fe2+) or weak (Cd2+) binding strength afforded 3D metallo-cages with low symmetry or highly symmetric metallo-tetrahedra, respectively, possessing totally different geometrical configurations. Heavy metal ions have a serious effect on humans and the ecosystem. Molecular sieves have attracted significant attention in heavy metal ion adsorption with distinct microporosity and uniform pore size. In this paper, we successfully synthesized nano-sized NaA molecular sieves in the presence of an organic templating agent while aluminum isopropoxide and silica sol were used as the aluminum and silica sources. To synthesize molecular sieves of the ideal size, the anionic cation concentration and templating agent were adjusted. The findings of Cu(II) and Pb(II) adsorption on NaA molecular sieves showed that under the ideal conditions of adsorption time at 90 minutes, pH = 5, adsorption temperature at 25 °C, and starting adsorbent concentration at 100 mg g−1, the optimal adsorbing capacity could reach 230 mg g−1 and 600 mg g−1, respectively. Isotherm, kinetic, thermodynamic and reusability studies of heavy metal ion adsorption on NaA molecular sieves were carried out to investigate the adsorption kinetics. Gold chloride clusters play an important role in catalysis and materials chemistry. Due to the diversity of their species and isomers, there is still a dearth of structural studies at the molecular level. In this work, anions of AunCln+3- and AunCln+5- (n = 2-4) clusters were obtained by laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS), and the most stable isomers of AunCln+3- were determined after a thorough search and optimization at the TPSSh/aug-cc-pVTZ/ECP60MDF level. The results indicate that all isomers with the lowest energy have a planar zigzag skeleton. In each species, there is one Au(III) atom at the edge connected with four Cl atoms, which sets it from the other Au(I) atoms. Four growth pathways for AunCln+3- (n = 2-7) clusters are proposed (labelled R1, R2, R3 and R4). They are all associated with an aurophilic contact and are exothermic. The binding energies tend to stabilize at --41kcal/mol when the size of the cluster increases in all pathways. The pathway R1, which connects all the most stable isomers of the respective clusters, is characterized by cluster growth due to aurophilic interactions at the terminal atom of Au(I) in the zigzag chains. In the pathway of R4 involving Au-Au bonding in its initial structures (n < 3), the distance between intermediate gold atoms grows with cluster size, ultimately resulting in the transfer of the intermediate Au-Au bonding into aurophilic interaction. The size effect on the structure and aurophilic interactions of these clusters will be better understood based on these discoveries, potentially providing new insights into the active but elusive chemical species involved in the corresponding catalytic reactions or nanoparticle synthesis processes. A fluorescent multichannel sensor array has been established based on three carbon dots derived from Tibetan medicine waste for rapid quantification and discrimination of six heavy metal ions. Due to the chelation between metal ions and carbon dots (CDs), this fluorescence "turn off" mode sensing array can quantify six metal ions as low as "μM" level. Moreover, the six heavy metal ions display varying quenching effects on these three CDs owing to diverse chelating abilities between each other, producing differential fluorescent signals for three sensing channels, which can be plotted as specific fingerprints and converted into intuitive identification profiles via principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) technologies to accurately distinguish Cu2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Ag+, Ce4+, and Ni2+ with the minimum differentiated concentration of 5 μM. Valuably, this sensing array unveils good sensitivity, exceptional selectivity, ideal stability, and excellent anti-interference ability for both mixed standards and actual samples. Our contribution provides a novel approach for simultaneous determination of multiple heavy metal ions in environmental samples, and it will inspire the development of other advanced optical sensing array for simultaneous quantification and discrimination of multiple targets. This study used micro-analyses, (FTIR, UV-Vis) spectra, magnetic, thermogravimetric, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns, and transmittance electron microscopy (TEM) techniques to characterize three synthesized theophylline (TPH) complexes with ruthenium(III), platinum(IV), and iridium(III) metal ions. The metal ions indicated above were found to align with the TPH drug chelate as a mono-dentate ligand via the deprotonated NH group at the nitrogen atom position N7, as verified by FTIR measurements. Additionally, the complexes conductivity and magnetic susceptibility were examined. The octahedral geometry for the synthesized complexes was proposed by the current data. Except for the iridium(III) complex, which has a non-electrolytic nature due to the presence of a chlorine atom inside the chelation sphere, the molar conductivity of the complexes in DMSO solution was electrolyte in nature. Theophylline complexes with a (metal: ligand) stoichiometry of 1:2 were produced. The TPH complexes have also been tested in vitro against G(+) bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus Aureus) and G(-) bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) to evaluate their antibacterial efficacy. Solvent extraction of Zr(IV) in an undiluted phosphonium based ionic liquid (IL) and its selective separation from Ln(III) and An(III) has been investigated in the present study. Eu(III)/Am(III) were chosen as the representative Ln(III)/An(III). Tri(hexyl)tetradecylphosphonium nitrate ([P66614][NO3]) was chosen as IL phase and the feed phase was nitric acid containing the target metal ions. The extraction process was accomplished at different experimental parameters such as the concentration of initial nitric acid, initial feed metal concentration and equilibration time to explore the extractability of the proposed IL towards Zr(IV). The efficient extraction of Zr(IV) without any external ligand in IL phase and negligible extraction of Eu(III)/Am(III) were distinctly discerned leading to noteworthy separation factors for Zr(IV). The loading experiment revealed a noticeable growth of equilibrium concentrations of Zr(IV) in IL phase while that of Eu(III) was very less irrespective of the initial feed concentration. The association of two IL moieties in the complex formation process has been inferred. Nitrate ion was found to be superior as IL anion in terms of metal loading in comparison to other anions. Pyridoxal and pyridoxal 5′-phosphate are aldehyde forms of B6 vitamin that can easily be transformed into each other in the living organism. The presence of a phosphate group, however, provides the related compounds (e.g., hydrazones) with better solubility in water. In addition, the phosphate group may sometimes act as a binding center for metal ions. In particular, a phosphate group can be a strong ligand for a gold(III) ion, which is of interest for researchers for the anti-tumor and antimicrobial potential of gold(III). This paper aims to answer whether the phosphate group is involved in the complex formation between gold(III) and hydrazones derived from pyridoxal 5′-phosphate. The answer is negative, since the comparison of the stability constants determined for the gold(III) complexes with pyridoxal- and pyridoxal 5′-phosphate-derived hydrazones showed a negligible difference. In addition, quantum chemical calculations confirmed that the preferential coordination of two series of phosphorylated and non-phosphorylated hydrazones to gold(III) ion is similar. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection has rapidly spread through various routes. A genomic analysis of clinical MRSA samples revealed an unknown protein, Sav2152, predicted to be a haloacid dehalogenase (HAD)-like hydrolase, making it a potential candidate for a novel drug target. In this study, we determined the crystal structure of Sav2152, which consists of a C2-type cap domain and a core domain. The core domain contains four motifs involved in phosphatase activity that depend on the presence of Mg2+ ions. Specifically, residues D10, D12, and D233, which closely correspond to key residues in structurally homolog proteins, are responsible for binding to the metal ion and are known to play critical roles in phosphatase activity. Our findings indicate that the Mg2+ ion known to stabilize local regions surrounding it, however, paradoxically, destabilizes the local region. Through mutant screening, we identified D10 and D12 as crucial residues for metal binding and maintaining structural stability via various uncharacterized intra-protein interactions, respectively. Substituting D10 with Ala effectively prevents the interaction with Mg2+ ions. The mutation of D12 disrupts important structural associations mediated by D12, leading to a decrease in the stability of Sav2152 and an enhancement in binding affinity to Mg2+ ions. Additionally, our study revealed that D237 can replace D12 and retain phosphatase activity. In summary, our work uncovers the novel role of metal ions in HAD-like phosphatase activity. The use of probiotic lactobacilli has been proposed as a strategy to mitigate damage associated with exposure to toxic metals. Their protective effect against cationic metal ions, such as those of mercury or lead, is believed to stem from their chelating and accumulating potential. However, their retention of anionic toxic metalloids, such as inorganic arsenic, is generally low. Through the construction of mutants in phosphate transporter genes (pst) in Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strains, coupled with arsenate [As(V)] uptake and toxicity assays, we determined that the incorporation of As(V), which structurally resembles phosphate, is likely facilitated by phosphate transporters. Surprisingly, inactivation in Lc. paracasei of PhoP, the transcriptional regulator of the two-component system PhoPR, a signal transducer involved in phosphate sensing, led to an increased resistance to arsenite [As(III)]. In comparison to the wild type, the phoP strain exhibited no differences in the ability to retain As(III), and there were no observed changes in the oxidation of As(III) to the less toxic As(V). These results reinforce the idea that specific transport, and not unspecific cell retention, plays a role in As(V) biosorption by lactobacilli, while they reveal an unexpected phenotype for the lack of the pleiotropic regulator PhoP. Li2CO3 is the most tenacious parasitic solid-state product in lithium–air batteries (LABs). Developing suitable redox mediators (RMs) is an efficient way to address the Li2CO3 issue, but only a few RMs have been investigated to date, and their mechanism of action also remains elusive. Herein, we investigate the effects of the central metal ion in binuclear metal phthalocyanines on the catalysis of Li2CO3 decomposition, namely binuclear cobalt phthalocyanine (bi-CoPc) and binuclear cobalt manganese phthalocyanine (bi-CoMnPc). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the key intermediate peroxydicarbonate (*C2O62−) is stabilized by bi-CoPc2+ and bi-CoMnPc3+, which is accountable for their excellent catalytic effects. Using the aldehyde amine condensation procedure and the triphenylamine group as the skeleton structure, the new triphenylamine-aromatic aldehyde-succinylhydrazone probe molecule DHBYMH was created. A newly created acylhydrazone probe was structurally characterized by mass spectrometry (MS), NMR, and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Fluorescence and UV spectroscopy were used to examine DHBYMH's sensing capabilities for metal ions. Notably, DHBYMH achieved a detection limit of 1.62 × 10−7 M by demonstrating exceptional selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu2+ ions in an optimum sample solvent system (DMSO/H2O, (v/v = 7/3); pH = 7.0; cysteine (Cys) concentration: 1 × 10−4 M). Heavy metal poisoning has a life-threatening impact on the human body to aquatic ecosystems. This necessitates designing a convenient green methodology for the fabrication of an electrochemical sensor that can detect heavy metal ions efficiently. In this study, boron (B) and nitrogen (N) co-doped laser-induced porous graphene (LIGBN) nanostructured electrodes were fabricated using a direct laser writing technique. The fabricated electrodes were utilised for the individual and simultaneous electrochemical detection of lead (Pb2+) and cadmium (Cd2+) ions using a square wave voltammetry technique (SWV). The synergistic effect of B and N co-doping results in an improved sensing performance of the electrode with better sensitivity of 0.725 µA/µM for Pb2+ and 0.661 µA/µM for Cd2+ ions, respectively. Moreover, the sensing electrode shows a low limit of detection of 0.21 µM and 0.25 µM for Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions, with wide linear ranges from 8.0 to 80 µM for Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions and high linearity of R2 = 0.99 in case of simultaneous detection. Actin is a highly conserved cytoskeletal protein that is present in all eukaryotes. Polymerization of actin to filamentous actin is essential for numerous cellular processes. Abnormal actin dynamics are directly associated with a variety of diseases, including cancer, immunological and neurological disorders. However, the dynamics of actin are not fully understood. In this work, we study the effects of nucleotides and metal ions on conformation of F/G-actin using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Our results show that different nucleotides and metal ions change the conformation of actin. The state of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) binding on F-actin conformation is more stable than G-actin. The D-loop has a large fluctuation when Ca 2 + binds to G-ATP-actin than Mg 2 + binds. Adenosine Diphosphate (ADP) binding leads to a stronger residual correlation on F-actin conformation, while it is opposite on G-actin. In addition, the detailed interactions between nucleotides and adjacent residues are discussed on different states of actin. This work provides a structural basis for understanding how the different nucleotides/metal ions binding influences the conformation of actin. The development of facile, sensitive, and robust methods for the detection of metal ions is fascinating for chemists because traditional strategies for their detection usually involve complicated instrumentation and critical sample preparation procedures. In this work, bicinchoninic acid was used in a specific reaction with Cu(I) for the spectrophotometric determination of various metal ions. The optimization of experimental parameters led to the establishment of a simple, fast, and accurate analytical method. Mn(II), Co(II), and Fe(II) can be detected at submicromolar levels using this method. Calibration graphs for Mn(II), Co(II), and Fe(II) are rectilinear within the range of 8–40, 15–150, and 15–150 μM, respectively. The detection limit for Mn(II), Co(II), and Fe(II) were 0.83, 1.4, and 1.9 mg/L, respectively, and the relative standard deviation did not exceed 2.5% for five replicates. The bathocuproine reaction demonstrated that Cu(II) can be reduced to Cu(I) by Mn(II). Then bicinchoninic acid can bind to Cu(I), creating a purple-colored product at 562 nm. The method has been successfully applied to evaluate the reaction process and stability of metal-organic frameworks. Moreover, the results were found to be in satisfactory agreement with those acquired by using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique, which will open up a new avenue for using the proposed strategy as a conventional method to detect metal ions in scientific research. Metalloproteins are ubiquitous in all living organisms and take part in a very wide range of biological processes. For this reason, their experimental characterization is crucial to obtain improved knowledge of their structure and biological functions. The three‐dimensional structure represents highly relevant information since it provides insight into the interaction between the metal ion(s) and the protein fold. Such interactions determine the chemical reactivity of the bound metal. The available PDB structures can contain errors due to experimental factors such as poor resolution and radiation damage. A lack of use of distance restraints during the refinement and validation process also impacts the structure quality. Here, the aim was to obtain a thorough overview of the distribution of the distances between metal ions and their donor atoms through the statistical analysis of a data set based on more than 115 000 metal‐binding sites in proteins. This analysis not only produced reference data that can be used by experimentalists to support the structure‐determination process, for example as refinement restraints, but also resulted in an improved insight into how protein coordination occurs for different metals and the nature of their binding interactions. In this work, we introduced a simple aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) sensor (PHCS) which can selectively detect and discriminate three environmentally and biologically imperative heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Co2+ and Hg2+) and a hazard class 1 categorized nitro-explosive picric acid (PA) in differential media. By virtue of its weak fluorescence attributes in pure organic medium owing to the synergistic operation of multiple photophysical quenching mechanisms, the molecular probe showcased highly selective 'TURN ON' fluorogenic response towards hazardous Hg2+ with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 97 nM. Comprehensive investigation of binding mechanism throws light on the cumulative effect of probe-metal complexation induced chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) effect and subsequent AIEE activation within the formed probe-metal adducts. Noteworthily, the probe (PHCS) can be readily used in real water samples for the quantitative determination of Hg2+ in a wide concentration range. In addition, the probe displayed modest colorimetric recognition performances to selectively detect and discriminate two essential heavy metal ions (Cu2+ and Co2+) with a LOD of 96 nM and 65 nM for Cu2+ and Co2+ respectively, in semi-aqueous medium. Intriguingly, based on high photoluminescence efficiency, the AIEE active nano-aggregated PHCS displayed a remarkable propensity to be used as a selective and ultra-sensitive 'TURN-OFF' fluorogenic chemosensor towards PA with LOD of 34.4 ppb in aqueous medium. Finally, we specifically shed light on the interaction of PHCS hydrosol towards PA using some unprecedented techniques, which helped uncover new photophysical insights of probe-explosive molecule interaction. Organic fluorescence sensor for selectively detecting and quantifying toxic heavy metal ions has received significant interest due to their environmental hazards. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a simple tripodal Schiff base ligand (1) based on hydroxy-naphthaldehyde and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TREN) and demonstrated highly selective turn-on fluorescence sensing of Cd2+ ions. The free ligand did not show any fluorescence in DMF. In contrast, Cd2+ (10− 4 M) addition exhibited a strong enhancement of fluorescence at 450 nm. Heterogous expression of lignin peroxidase (LiP) from Phanerochaete chrysosporium was performed in by E. coli prokaryotic expression system, and pure LiP was prepared by washing, refolding, and purification. The enzyme activity was measured by the resveratrol oxidation method. The effects of different chemicals on LiP activity were explored by adding different kinds of metal ions, acids/phenols, and surfactants. The optimal pH and temperature are 4.2 and 40 °C. The single-factor screening experiment showed that adding 1 mM Mn2+, 0.1 mM DL-lactic acid, and 2% PEG-4000 had the best promotion effect on the enzyme activity of recombinant LiP, which was 160.61%, 188.46%, and 247.83%, respectively. Further, the synergistic addition of Mn2+ and PEG-4000 achieved the best enzyme activity promotion effect of 277.51%. In addition, the addition of DL-lactic acid alone could promote LiP activity. However, the co-addition of lactic acid with Mn2+ and PEG-4000 contributed only 247.87%, which indicated that the addition of DL-lactic acid had an inhibitory effect when applied synergistically. For the first time, it was found that PEG-4000 increased LiP enzyme activity obviously and had a synergistic effect with Mn2+, serving as a reference for LiP in studies and applications pertaining to lignin breakdown. Nutrient availability in hydroponic solutions must be accurately monitored to maintain crop productivity; however, few cost-effective, accurate, real-time, and long-term monitoring technologies have been developed. In this study, we describe the development and application of cation-/anion-exchange chromatography with a neutral eluent (20-mmol/L sodium formate, pH 7.87) for the simultaneous separation (within 50 min) of ionic nutrients, including K+, NH4+, NO2−, NO3−, and phosphate ion, in a hydroponic fertilizer solution. Using the neutral eluent avoided degradation of the separation column during precipitation of metal ion species, such as hydroxides, with an alkaline eluent and oxidation of NO2− to NO3− with an acidic eluent. The suitability of the current method for monitoring ionic components in a hydroponic fertilizer solution was confirmed. The present investigation demonstrates a simple, sensitive and selective colorimetric probe for the detection of Hg2+ in milk samples employing redox interaction of Hg2+ ions with citrate‐stabilised silver nanoparticles, inducing colour change from yellow to colourless. Milk samples were pretreated by ultrasound assistance in acidic media. The detection limit (LOD) was 6.17 ppb using UV–Visible spectrophotometer with linear correlation (R2 = 0.9901) at 10–2000 ppb solution of Hg2+ ions. A2B2O7 oxides comprise four subcrystalline phase structures, which include the layered perovskite, pyrochlore, disordered defect fluorite, and rare‐earth C‐type structures. Herein, a series of A2B2O7 oxides have been synthesized using simple methods, and the X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopic characteristics of their subcrystalline phase structures are systematically summarized. It was found that the rA/rB ratio can be used to correctly determine the subcrystalline phase structure of the A2B2O7 oxides when the A‐site ions are rare‐earth ions. Although the A‐site ions are the main‐group metal ions, the rA/rB ratio cannot be used to accurately determine probably due to f electrons. Raman spectroscopy proves to be the most effective method for determining the subcrystalline phase structure, which is followed by XRD. The characteristic Raman spectral bands of disordered defect fluorites are closely related to their B‐site ion oxides with fluorite phase structures. For these A2B2O7 oxides with rA/rB ratios located at the edge value possessing the same elemental composition, different subcrystalline phase structures have been prepared by adopting different synthesis methods and calcination temperatures. Heavy metal ions such as mercury (Hg), copper (Cu), and cadmium (Cd) pose significant threats to ecosystems and human health due to their toxicity and bioaccumulation potential. With growing environmental concerns over heavy metal ion pollution, there is an urgent need to develop efficient detection methods for safeguarding public health and the environment. Various materials, including polymers, nanomaterials, and porous substances, have been used for heavy metal ion detection and have shown promising performance for different scenarios. However, each of these materials has certain limitations as probes. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs), known for their exceptional optoelectronic properties and high structural and chemical tunability, have gained great attention in applications such as photovoltaics and LEDs. Yet, their potential as metal ion probes remains rarely explored. This review assesses MHPs as prospective materials for heavy metal ion detection, taking their structure, chemical properties, and responses to external stimuli into consideration. Three key detection mechanisms—cation exchange (CE), electron transfer (ET), and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), are explored to understand how metal ions trigger fluorescence changes on perovskites, enabling their detection. Finally, current avenues of developing perovskite probes are discussed, which include exploration of lead-free perovskites to mitigate environmental concerns arising from lead leakage and the pursuit of achieving high-sensitivity and stable detection in aqueous media, summarizing the existing and promising strategies in this field. In this study, activated carbon cloth (ACC) derived from cypress fruit was employed to investigate the adsorption of Pb2+, Cd2+, and Co2+ from synthetic aqueous systems. The correlation between adsorption features (pH, adsorbent dosage, temperature, initial ion concentration, and contact time) and adsorbent removal efficiency was investigated. Analysis by FT-IR, SEM, and EDS was employed to confirm the adsorption of metal ions onto the ACC. Results revealed the best adsorption efficiencies for heavy metal ions were attained at pH = 7, 11, 6; the adsorbent dosage of 0.06, 0.08, and 0.04 g for Pb2+, Cd2+, and Co2+, respectively; the ion initial concentration of 50 mg·L−1 for Pb2+ and 70 mg·L−1 for both Co2+ and Cd2+; and contact time of 90 minutes for both Pb2+ and Co2+ and 120 minutes for Cd2+. Kinetic studies exposed the second-order adsorption of all aforementioned heavy metal ions. Additionally, the equilibrium data were fitted by Langmuir and Freundlich's isotherms, while the former performed better than the latter. The maximum adsorption capacity values for Pb2+, Co2+, and Cd2+ were attained to 81.87, 55.30, and 117.3 mg·g−1, respectively. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a serum glycoprotein, is expressed during embryonic development and the pathogenesis of liver cancer. It serves as a clinical tumor marker, function as a carcinogen, immune suppressor, and transport vehicle; but the detailed AFP structural information has not yet been reported. In this study, we used single-particle cryo-electron microscopy(cryo-EM) to analyze the structure of the recombinant AFP obtained a 3.31 Å cryo-EM structure and built an atomic model of AFP. We observed and identified certain structural features of AFP, including N-glycosylation at Asn251, four natural fatty acids bound to distinct domains, and the coordination of metal ions by residues His22, His264, His268, and Asp280. Furthermore, we compared the structural similarities and differences between AFP and human serum albumin. The elucidation of AFP's structural characteristics not only contributes to a deeper understanding of its functional mechanisms, but also provides a structural basis for developing AFP-based drug vehicles. Metal ions can perform multiple roles ranging from regulatory to structural and are crucial for cell function. While some metal ions like Na+ are ubiquitously present at high concentrations, other ions, especially Ca2+ and transition metals, such as Zn2+ or Cu+/2+ are regulated. The concentrations above or below the physiological range cause severe changes in the behavior of biomolecules that bind them and subsequently affect the cell wellbeing. This has led to the development of specialized protocols to study metal ion binding biomolecules in bulk conditions that mimic the cell environment. Recently, there is growing evidence of influence of post-transcriptional and post-translational modifications on the affinity of the metal ion binding sites. However, such targets are difficult to obtain in amounts required for classical biophysical experiments. Single molecule techniques have revolutionized the field of biophysics, molecular and structural biology. Their biggest advantage is the ability to observe each molecule's interaction independently, without the need for synchronization. An additional benefit is its extremely low sample consumption. This feature allows characterization of designer biomolecules or targets obtained coming from natural sources. All types of biomolecules, including proteins, DNA and RNA were characterized using single molecule methods. However, one group is underrepresented in those studies. These are the metal ion binding biomolecules. Single molecule experiments often require separate optimization, due to extremely different concentrations used during the experiments. In this review we focus on single molecule methods, such as single molecule FRET, nanopores and optical tweezers that are used to study metal ion binding biomolecules. We summarize various examples of recently characterized targets and reported experimental conditions. Chemosensing, an interdisciplinary scientific domain, plays a pivotal role ranging from environmental monitoring to healthcare diagnostics and (inter)national security. Metal‐organic gels (MOGs) are recognized for their stability, selectivity, and responsiveness, making them valuable for chemosensing applications. Researchers have explored the development of MOGs based on different metal ions and ligands, allowing for tailored properties and sensitivities, and have even demonstrated their applications as portable sensors such as paper‐based test strips for practical use. A phthalonitrile‐based bent shaped push‐pull dibenzodioxin was synthesized using an efficient and rapid monowave reactor‐assisted protocol in acceptable yields. When aqueous Fe3+ ion solution was added to the bent dibenzodioxin in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), the fluorescence intensity of bent dibenzodioxin at 450 nm was quenched significantly. UV‐visible and fluorimetric measurements displayed high selectivity and sensitivity towards Fe3+ over other metal ions, with a low detection limit of 0.67 μM. Fluorimetric investigations like interference and reversibility test of bent‐dibenzodioxin with Fe3+ led to proving it as a potential canditate for chemosensor application. Job's plot showed 1 : 2 stoichiometry between the bent‐dibenzodioxin and Fe3+ ions respectively and it was proposed that the the binding of one of the Fe3+ ion is from the phenanthroline‐like bent pocket, featuring two oxygen atoms and the other Fe3+ ions binds with the two ortho‐dinitrile units of the bent‐dibenzodioxin. This study demonstrates a facile solvothermal approach to synthesizing green fluorescent carbon dots (G‐CDs) using baby pumpkin as a natural precursor. The G‐CDs exhibit strong fluorescence emission at 547 nm under excitation at 467 nm, and the highest quantum yield reaching 17.5 % in acetone, making them suitable for a range of applications including sensing, bioimaging, catalysis, and drug delivery. The G‐CDs demonstrate excellent stability under various conditions, such as prolonged light exposure, high salt concentration, extended periods, and elevated temperatures. Furthermore, the G‐CDs show a good linear relationship with Cd2+ within the concentration range of 0 to 16.5 μmol/L, with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.9920. The detection limit (LOD) was calculated to be 0.68 μmol/L. The recovery rate ranges between 85.66% to 97.43%, indicating their potential for use in environmental metal ion detection. The molecular orientation of liquid crystalline (LC) hydrogels has the potential to induce a range of functionalities that can deliver great mechanical strength. Sacran is a supergiant LC polysaccharide isolated from the cyanobacterium Aphanothece sacrum with a high amount of anionic functional groups such as sulfates and carboxylates. In this article, ultra-strong sacran hydrogels and their dried fibers were produced by cross-linking under injection flow with trivalent metal ions such as Al3+, Cr3+, Fe3+, In3+, and rare-earth metal ions such Er3+ and Sr3+. Shape-shifting polymers usually require not only reversible stimuli-responsive ability, but also strong mechanical properties. A novel shape-shifting photochromic hydrogel system was designed and fabricated by embedding hydrophobic spiropyran (SP) into double polymeric network (DN) through micellar copolymerisation. Here, sodium alginate (Alg) and poly acrylate-co-methyl acrylate-co-spiropyran (P(SA-co-MA-co-SPMA)) were employed as the first network and the second network, respectively, to realise high mechanical strength. After being soaked in the CaCl2 solution, the carboxyl groups in the system underwent metal complexation with Ca2+ to enhance the hydrogel. Moreover, after the hydrogel was exposed to UV-light, the closed isomer of spiropyran in the hydrogel network could be converted into an open zwitterionic isomer merocyanine (MC), which was considered to interact with Ca2+ ions. Interestingly, Ca2+ and UV-light responsive programmable shape of the copolymer hydrogel could recover to its original form via immersion in pure water. Schiff bases (SBs) are important ligands in coordination chemistry due to their unique structural properties. Their ability to form complexes with metal ions has been exploited for the environmental detection of emerging water contaminants. In this work, we evaluated the complexation ability of three newly proposed SBs, 1–3, by complete conformational analysis, using a combination of Molecular Dynamics and Density Functional Theory studies, to understand their ability to coordinate toxic heavy metal (HMs) ions. From this study, it emerges that all the ligands present geometries that make them suitable to complex HMs through the N-imino moieties or, in the case of 3, with the support of the oxygen atoms of the ethylene diether chain. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent a new type of crystalline porous polymers that possess pre‐designed skeletons, uniform nanopores, and ordered π structure. These attributes make them well‐suited for the design of light‐emitting materials. However, the majority of COFs exhibits poor luminescence due to aggregation‐caused quenching (ACQ), resulting from the strong interaction between adjacent layers. To break the limitation, the building units with three methoxy groups on the walls are used to construct TM‐OMe‐EBTHz‐COF, which suppresses the ACQ effects to improve light‐emitting activity of COF. The TM‐OMe‐EBTHz‐COF exhibits a notable emission of yellow‐green luminescence in the solid state, with a remarkably high absolute quantum yield of 21.1%. The methoxy groups and hydrazine linkage form three coordination sites, contributing to excellent performance in metal ions sensing. The TM‐OMe‐EBTHz‐COF demonstrates high sensitivity and selectivity to Fe3+ ion. Importantly, the low detection limit is below 150 nanomolar, ranking it among the best‐performing Fe3+ sensor systems.
