Abstract

Purpose — To preview new titles showcased at Book Expo 2007 held in June in New York City. Design/methodology/approach — The review is based on selecting for review that which was displayed by both mainstream and small presses. Findings — Some predominant themes were leadership, management and business development. Practical implications — These new titles provide a way to understand how the thinking in these areas is changing and how as a result the workplace is changing. Abstract

The distance between work prescriptions and real activity is still an unresolved problem in high-risk organizations, even in cases where safety rules must imperatively be applied. In the context of integrated safety culture, we propose to associate regulated safety with managed safety (or safety in action), but this general principle still needs operationalization. In this article, we discuss how to make compatible behaviors of conformity (in cases where rules are imperative) and behaviors of initiative, supported by research based on empirical analyses. To do this, safety engineers still shall appropriate the devices and practices of collaborative projects that have already been successful in other ergonomic design and design processes. However, this time the practices and devices shall be applied to the design of adherent safety procedures, which sometimes implies influencing the design of production facilities and their work tools. Abstract

This article presents the analysis of an accident in the pearlification (production of urea pearls) sector of a nitrogen fertilizer plant. Unlike conventional analyses usually centered on the use of tools such as the "tree of causes" or the "Ishikawa diagram" which lead to the designation of those responsible for the human and / or technical errors identified, the analysis presented in this article focuses on the daily work carried out by workers in the sector in which the accident took place and also on how the daily activities carried out by these workers can contribute to, or avoid situations which can produce accidents. The accident analysis based on work activity was able to answer questions that remained unanswered after the official analysis produced by the company and, even more, it was able to elucidate the reasons why certain behaviors were adopted by the workers at the time of the accident. From this perspective, understanding the work activity reveals more concretely the actual causes of the accidents. This way, it responds better to what should be the main objective of any analysis: to promote learning and avoid new accidents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. Organizational resilience in the oil and gas industry: A scoping review.

Abstract

• An optimistic perspective on the concept of resilience in the oil & gas industry. • Resilience presented as an analytical concept rather than guiding existing practices. • Integrated operations has raised questions about system resilience. • Research on resilience in oil and industry rarely describes adaptive processes. • There is a need for research on resilience beyond safety concerns. Resilience derives from the study of socio-ecological systems and refers to the dynamical capacity to adapt to internal and external perturbations by changing its mode of operation without losing its ability to perform. The present article offers a scoping review of organizational research discussing the concept of resilience in the oil and gas industry. Rather than approaching a narrowly defined question as in systematic reviews, scoping reviews produce an overview of a body of knowledge covering broad questions. It reviews organizational research on resilience in the oil and gas industry by covering five main categories: conceptualizations; article type/methods; context/unit of analysis; relation between resilience and safety; and, central topics highlighted in the literature. The review of both empirical and conceptual literature reveals that the concept of resilience tends to be researched in terms of system capabilities or outcomes rather than processes. Integrated operations has provided new scenarios to discuss and investigate resilience in oil and gas production. However, findings demonstrate how resilience is often presented as a normative construct and there is little development in terms of understanding the dynamics of adaptive processes in the industry. The overall goal is to contribute to the study of organizational resilience by identifying areas for further study and by producing new knowledge that can permeate practices in organizations.
