Introduction Anecdotal evidence suggests that parents protect their children from food insecurity and its effects, but few studies have concurrently assessed food insecurity among youth and parents. The purpose of this study was to examine food insecurity and eating behaviors among an urban sample of mother-adolescent dyads. Methods Mother-adolescent dyads (n = 55) were from six public housing sites in Phoenix, Arizona who completed surveys during 2014. Multivariate mixed linear and logistic regression models assessed the relationship between mother and adolescent eating behaviors in the context of food insecurity. Results Food insecurity was prevalent with 65.4% of parents and 43.6% of adolescents reporting food insecurity; 34.5% of parents and 14.5% of adolescents reported very low food security. After adjusting for food insecurity status, parents' and adolescents' fruit, vegetable, and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption was not associated. However, significant associations were observed between mothers' and adolescents' fast food intake (β = 0.52; p < 0.001), family meal intake (β = 0.52; p = 0.001), mindful eating (β = 0.51; p = 0.032), and binge eating (OR 8.05; p = 0.011). Discussion Parents may protect their adolescent children against food insecurity given the lower prevalence of food insecurity observed among adolescents. Interventions addressing food insecurity among mothers and adolescents may want to capitalize on shared eating patterns and address issues related to binge eating and leverage site-based strengths of public housing. This article considers how some individuals and families who are low income think and dream about their futures and compares their thoughts with classic notions of the American Dream. Drawing on intensive interviews with individuals and families, the authors analyzed interviewees’ observations about their hopes and thoughts for the future. Five main themes emerge: stability, agency, and control; ideal home life; values about the home; aspirations for children; and obstacles to achieving dreams. In brief, the authors find that the low-income participants in our research have dreams that individuals and families who are more affluent might take for granted and that they appear to adopt neoliberal assumptions about achieving those dreams. ABSTRACT Previous research consistently finds that racially based residential segregation is associated with poor economic, health, and social outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between residential segregation and self-reported happiness. Using panel data from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH), we begin by estimating ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions of happiness on a measure of MSA-level segregation, controlling for a rich set of individual, neighborhood, regional, and state characteristics. The OLS results suggest that increased segregation is associated with a reduction in happiness among blacks. To deal more appropriately with the potential endogeneity of location choice, we extend the methodology to fully exploit the panel structure of the NSFH and incorporate individual fixed effects into the happiness equation. Contrary to the OLS results, our fixed effects estimates imply that blacks are happier in more segregated metropolitan areas. This document discusses the effects of gated communities in the urban setting in terms of different notions of liberty. The analysis argues that the exponential growth that gated communities have experienced in urban areas is mainly the result of individual decisions based on a negative liberty ideology. At the same time, the growth of gated communities is having significant effects on the quality of life in urban areas as well as on the capacity of local governments to secure the positive liberty of citizens. This paper argues that a different conception of liberty -participatory liberty- needs to be integrated in the discussion in order to develop sustainable solutions to the issues generated by these types of communities. Over the past several decades, many public housing residents have relocated out of impoverished central city developments through a variety of programs aimed to deconcentrate poverty. This article explores factors that contribute to relocated public housing residents' satisfaction and collective efficacy in their new residence. Results from interviews with relocated public housing residents in the Southwest indicate that perceptions of the quality of the new neighborhood are associated with residents' sense of satisfaction and collective efficacy. The article concludes with suggestions for better formulating relocation policies to increase the likelihood that residents will feel integrated postrelocation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study addresses validity issues in evaluation that stem from Ernest R. House’s book, Evaluating With Validity. The authors examine American Journal of Evaluation articles from 1980 to 2010 that report the results of policy and program evaluations. The authors classify these evaluations according to House’s “major approaches” typology (Systems Analysis, Behavioral Objectives, Decision making, Goal-free, Professional Review, Art Criticism, Quasi-legal, and Case Study) and the types of validity (measurement, design, interpretation, use) the evaluations consider.
