Aims: Very few cohort studies are available about the relation between remnant cholesterol (RC) and diabetes. Based on a prospective cohort survey, this research aimed at investigating if high RC was related to a future diabetes risk in the Chinese population, as well as to compare the association between RC, high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐C), low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), TG/HDL‐C, LDL‐C/HDL‐C, TC/HDL‐C, and non‐high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (non‐HDL‐C), and future diabetes risk. Materials and Methods: 6,700 baseline normoglycemic participants of the REACTION study's Beijing center were recruited in 2011–2012 and followed up in 2015. Multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to explore the relationship of RC, HDL‐C, LDL‐C, TC, TG, LDL‐C/HDL‐C, TG/HDL‐C, TC/HDL‐C, and non‐HDL‐C and a future diabetes risk. Results: After potential confounders were adjusted for, only RC (HR 1.134, 95% CI 1.016–1.267, P = 0.025) was positively related to a future diabetes risk, and only HDL‐C (HR 0.728, 95% CI 0.578–0.918, P = 0.007) was negatively related to a future diabetes risk. The rest of the lipid parameters were not related to a future risk of diabetes. Sensitivity and stratification analyses revealed that the relation between RC and future diabetes risk was stable. RC and future diabetes risk were still positively correlated even when the HDL‐C was ≥1.04 mmol/L (HR 1.167, 95% CI 1.050–1.297, P = 0.004). Conclusions: It was RC, but not other lipid parameters, that was independently and positively related to a future risk of diabetes among the Chinese general population. Background: Not many large‐sample investigations are available that compare the potency of the relationship of remnant cholesterol (RC) and other lipid parameters with diabetes and prediabetes. The goals of our study are to discover the relationship between RC and prediabetes, diabetes, and insulin resistance (IR) and to investigate RC, high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐C), non‐HDL‐C, triglycerides (TG), low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C), total cholesterol (TC), TC/HDL‐C, LDL‐C/HDL‐C, and TG/HDL‐C, which are the lipid parameters that are most positively related to diabetes, prediabetes, and IR. Methods: This research enrolled 36 684 subjects from China's eight provinces. We employed multiple logistic regression analysis for testing the relationship between lipid parameters and diabetes, prediabetes, and IR. Results: After adjusting for potential confounders, and comparing the results with other lipid parameters, the positive relationship between RC and diabetes (odds ratio [OR] 1.417, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.345–1.492), prediabetes (OR 1.555, 95% CI: 1.438–1.628), and IR (OR 1.488, 95% CI: 1.404–1.577) was highest. RC was still related to diabetes, prediabetes, and IR even when TG <2.3 mmol/L (diabetes: OR 1.256, 95% CI: 1.135–1.390; prediabetes: OR 1.503, 95% CI: 1.342–1.684; and IR: OR 1.278, 95% CI: 1.140–1.433), LDL‐C <2.6 mmol/L (diabetes: OR 1.306, 95% CI: 1.203–1.418; prediabetes: OR 1.597, 95% CI: 1.418–1.798; and IR: OR 1.552, 95% CI: 1.416–1.701), or HDL‐C ≥1 mmol/L (diabetes: OR 1.456, 95% CI: 1.366–1.550; prediabetes: OR 1.553, 95% CI: 1.421–1.697; and IR: OR 1.490, 95% CI: 1.389–1.598). Conclusion: RC is more positively related to diabetes, prediabetes, and IR than conventional lipids and lipid ratios in the general population, the relationships between RC and diabetes, prediabetes, and IR are stable, even if HDL‐C, LDL‐C, or TG are at appropriate levels. Background: Novel diabetes phenotypes were proposed by the Europeans through cluster analysis, but Chinese community diabetes populations might exhibit different characteristics. This study aims to explore the clinical characteristics of novel diabetes subgroups under data‐driven analysis in Chinese community diabetes populations. Methods: We used K‐means cluster analysis in 6369 newly diagnosed diabetic patients from eight centers of the REACTION (Risk Evaluation of cAncers in Chinese diabeTic Individuals) study. The cluster analysis was performed based on age, body mass index, glycosylated hemoglobin, homeostatic modeled insulin resistance index, and homeostatic modeled pancreatic β‐cell functionality index. The clinical features were evaluated with the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and chi‐square test. Logistic regression analysis was done to compare chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease risks between subgroups. Results: Overall, 2063 (32.39%), 658 (10.33%), 1769 (27.78%), and 1879 (29.50%) populations were assigned to severe obesity‐related and insulin‐resistant diabetes (SOIRD), severe insulin‐deficient diabetes (SIDD), mild age‐associated diabetes mellitus (MARD), and mild insulin‐deficient diabetes (MIDD) subgroups, respectively. Individuals in the MIDD subgroup had a low risk burden equivalent to prediabetes, but with reduced insulin secretion. Individuals in the SOIRD subgroup were obese, had insulin resistance, and a high prevalence of fatty liver, tumors, family history of diabetes, and tumors. Individuals in the SIDD subgroup had severe insulin deficiency, the poorest glycemic control, and the highest prevalence of dyslipidemia and diabetic nephropathy. Individuals in MARD subgroup were the oldest, had moderate metabolic dysregulation and the highest risk of cardiovascular disease. Conclusion: The data‐driven approach to differentiating the status of new‐onset diabetes in the Chinese community was feasible. Metallic Lithium deposited on graphite particles is the major phenomenon responsible for the degradation of cell capacity, triggering of internal short circuit (ISC), and exacerbating thermal runaway (TR) in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). However, currently, no available physics‐based model can provide an accurate quantitative description of lithium‐plating behavior. Herein, this work establishes a mechanism model to characterize the Li deposition‐stripping process, especially the formation of dead Li and the reversibility of deposited Li. By the combination of the battery model and 3D particle model with the Li deposition‐stripping model, this work enables the quantitative prediction of Li deposition during charging–discharging cycles at various charging rates. Based on the revealed understanding of the Li deposition‐stripping process, a smart charging strategy with the optimization of the minimized Li‐deposition and expedited charging time is proposed. Furthermore, this work also quantifies the influence of anode heterogeneity on Li plating. The results highlight the promise of physics‐based mechanistic modeling for the quantification of the Li disposition‐stripping process and provide fundamental guidance on battery design and charging protocols for next‐generation long cycle life Li‐ion cells. Background: The association between remnant cholesterol (RC) and diabetes remains unclear because of limited study and data. This study attempted to explore the association between RC and diabetes in a large sample, multicenter general population. Methods: The current study included 36 684 participants from eight provinces across China. Subjects were quartered according to the RC quartile. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between RC and diabetes. Results: After adjusting for potential confounding factors, RC was still significantly associated with diabetes (Q4: odds ratio [OR]:1.147, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.049–1.254, p =.003). In addition, RC and diabetes were still significantly associated when triglycerides (TG) were <1.7 mmol/L (Q4: OR: 1.155, 95% CI: 1.005–1.327, p =.042), low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C) <3.4 mmol/L (Q4: OR: 1.130, 95% CI: 1.011–1.264, p =.032), or HDL‐C (high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol) ≥1.0 mmol/L (Q4: OR: 1.116, 95% CI: 1.007–1.237, p =.037). In the stratification analysis, elevated RC was significantly associated with diabetes in subjects with systolic blood pressure (SBP) <140 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) <90 mm Hg, 60 ≤ estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≤90 ml/min per 1.73 m2, younger than 55 years old and female. Conclusion: In the Chinese community, RC is significantly correlated with diabetes, even when TG, LDL‐C, or HDL‐C were controlled within the appropriate range recommended by the guidelines. Background: The association between the Chinese Visceral Adiposity Index (CVAI) and urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) has not been illustrated. The current study aimed to investigate the association between CVAI and UACR and to compare the discriminative power of CVAI, triglyceride, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR) with UACR in the Chinese community population. Methods: This study included 34 732 participants from the REACTION (Risk Evaluation of cAncers in Chinese diabeTic Individuals) study. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to detect the association between CVAI, triglyceride, BMI, WC, WHR and UACR. Results: Binary logistic regression analysis showed that, after adjusting for potential confounders, in women, CVAI (odds ratio [OR]:1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01–1.34) and triglyceride (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.04–1.33) were associated with UACR, whereas BMI, WC, and WHR were not associated with UACR; in men, CVAI (OR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.02–1.50), WC (OR: 1.21, 95% CI 1.00–1.48), and triglycerides (OR: 1.18, 95% CI 0.97–1.44) were associated with UACR, whereas BMI and WHR were not associated with UACR. Stratified analysis showed that the correlation between CVAI and UACR was stronger in the population with 5.6 ≤ fasting blood glucose (FBG) <7.0 or 7.8 ≤ post‐load blood glucose (PBG) <11.1 mmol/L, FBG ≥7.0 or PBG ≥11.1, systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg. Conclusions: In the Chinese general population, CVAI and UACR were significantly associated in both genders. Background: Urinary albumin‐creatinine ratio (UACR) is a sensitive marker of kidney injury. This study analyzed the prevalence of different metabolic phenotypes and investigated their relationship with UACR in Chinese community adults. Methods: This study involved 33 303 participants over 40 years old from seven centers across China. They were stratified into six groups according to their body mass index (BMI) and metabolic status: metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), metabolically healthy overweight (MHOW), metabolically healthy obesity (MHO), metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MUNW), metabolically unhealthy overweight (MUOW), and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). Increased albuminuria was defined as a UACR ≥30 mg/g. Results: The percentages of MHNW, MHOW, MHO, MUNW, MUOW, and MUO were 27.6%, 15.9%, 4.1%, 19.8%, 22.5%, and 9.6%, respectively. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the MHO group (odds ratio [OR] 1.205; 95% CI, 1.081‐1.343), MUNW group (OR 1.232; 95% CI, 1.021‐1.486), MUOW group (OR 1.447; 95% CI, 1.303‐1.607), and MUO group (OR 1.912; 95% CI, 1.680‐2.176) were at higher risk of increased albuminuria compared to the MHNW group. Subgroup analysis indicated that the risk of increased albuminuria was further elevated among regular smokers in men aged 40 to 55 years old with abdominal obesity. Conclusions: Among Chinese community adults, increased albuminuria was associated with increased BMI whether metabolism was normal or not, and those with abnormal metabolism were at greater risk of increased albuminuria than those with normal metabolism. Background: The correlation between remnant cholesterol (RC) and urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) has not been illustrated. The present study aims to explore the correlation between RC levels and UACR in Chinese community adults. Methods: This study included 35 848 participants from a cohort study (REACTION). The UACR data were divided into three groups: UACR <10 mg/g, 10 ≤UACR<30 mg/g, and UACR ≥30 mg/g groups. RC was divided into two groups, according to the 75th percentile: <75% group and ≥75% group. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between RC and UACR. Results: The RC exhibited an adjusted odds ratio that was significant in models 1‐5. Although all confounders were corrected in model 5, RC and UACR were still significantly correlated， and the correlation was more significant in females，when compared to males (odds ratio [OR]: 1.117, 95% CI: 1.063‐1.176, P < 0.001 for all subjects; OR: 1.092, 95% CI: 1.128‐1.161, P = 0.004 for females; and OR: 1.085, 95% CI: 0.998‐1.194, P = 0.088 for males). The RC was significantly correlated with UACR for subjects with 5.6 ≤ fasting blood glucose < 7.0 or 7.8 ≤ post‐load blood glucose < 11.1 mmol/L, 24 ≤ body mass index (BMI) < 28 kg/m2, 120 ≤ systolic blood pressure < 140 and/or 80 ≤ diastolic blood pressure < 90 mm Hg. Conclusions: In the Chinese community, RC is highly correlated with UACR, and the correlation is more significant in females compared with males. Objective: Several studies have demonstrated a significant association between the presence of the ear lobe crease (ELC) and cardiovascular disease. Advanced glycation end‐products (AGEs) can affect the structures and functions of proteins and contribute to the development of diabetic complications. However, few studies have reported the relationship between AGEs and ELC. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation of skin autofluorescence (SAF)‐AGEage (SAF‐AGEs × age/100) with ELC. Methods: This cross‐sectional study enrolled 6500 eligible participants from two communities in Beijing. Skin autofluorescence (SAF) was used to measure skin AGEs (SAF‐AGEs). SAF‐AGEage was defined as AGEs × age/100. Binary logistic regression analysis and linear regression analysis nested in logistic models were applied to test outcomes. Results: The overall prevalence of ELC with an average age of 62.7 years participants was 57.1% (n = 3714). Age, fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, and lipoprotein cholesterol were all greater in participants with ELC. ELC‐positive participants had higher prevalence of coronary heart disease. Logistic analysis showed a significantly positive relationship between quartiles of SAF‐AGEage and ELC (odds ratio [OR] 1.526, 95% CI 1.324–1.759; OR 2.072, CI 1.791–2.396; and OR 2.983, CI 2.551–3.489) for the multivariate‐adjusted models, respectively. Stratified research revealed that those with a history of diabetes, hypertension, or coronary heart disease experienced the connection between SAF‐AGEage and ELC. This study was conducted to analyze the effect of molybdenum (Mo) on the level of macronutrients (Mg, K, Ca), micronutrients (Na, Zn, B, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) and toxic elements (Cd, Sn, As, Cr, Hg, Pb) in leaves and fruit tissues (peel, pulp & seed) of loquat using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Fruits were obtained from a loquat orchard located in Fujian (Yun Xiao/Zhangzhou). Loquat leaves showed 3.99, 23.90, 57.68 and 9.79-fold increase in the concentrations of Mg, K, Ca and B as affected by exogenously applied Mo, while a significant (p ≤ 0.05) reduction was observed in Na, Mo, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Sn, As, Cr, Hg, and Pb contents. In fruit peel, Mo induced 1.05, 1.56, 2.26, 1.15, 1.39, 1.30 and 1.89-fold increase in Mg, K, Na, Zn, B, Co and Ni, respectively, and Mo, Mn, Fe, Cu, Cr, and Pb contents were reduced. Fruit pulp showed elevated contents of Na, B, Co, Ni, and Sn by 25.65, 26.57, 70.09, 12.33 and 0.99%, respectively, and decreased concentrations of Mg, K, Ca, Zn, Mo, Mn, Fe, Cu, Cd, and Cr. Similarly, in loquat seeds, under the influence of Mo application, levels of K, Na, Zn, Fe, and Cr were uplifted by 14.75, 41.54, 12.71, 536.47 and 656.27%, respectively, while Mg, Ca, Mn, Co, Cu, Sn, and Hg were reduced significantly (p ≤ 0.05). Overall, mineral concentrations detected in the leaves and fruit tissues of loquat were greatly influenced by the application of Mo. Although the concentration of Sn in fruit pulp was increased by the foliar application of Mo, the fruits were under safe limits for human consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fruit sweetness being an important factor of organoleptic quality directly affects the consumers' preferences for fresh fruit consumption, and is influenced by the composition and quantity of sugars. In this study, four soluble sugars (sucrose, fructose, glucose, and sorbitol) were identified and quantified in plum fruits cv. 'Huangguan' at four different maturity stages (fruitlet, green, veraison, and mature stage). The results revealed that sucrose and glucose are major soluble sugar components at the fruitlet and mature stages, respectively. RNA‐Seq analysis was carried out and 6,778 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, including 121 genes involved in sugar metabolism. Furthermore, a total of 39 transcripts of 8 gene families encoding key enzymes related to the metabolism and accumulation of soluble sugars were separately identified. ERD6L (gene 103322904) was involved in keeping a balance of glucose between the inside and outside of vacuole. SS (gene 103333990) and SDH (gene 103335104) regulated the accumulation of fructose at the green stage. SDH (gene 103335104) controlled the degradation of sorbitol at the green stage. SS (gene 103333990) and PFK (gene 103333391) regulated the degradation of sucrose at the early stages of fruit development. Moreover, NINV (gene 103331108) regulated the accumulation of total sugar in plum. Genes 103321334 and 103335689 were important bZIP transcription factors that regulate the accumulation of glucose and fructose in fruits. Twelve DEGs were selected and validated to observe the relative accuracy of transcriptome sequencing data using qRT‐PCR. Gene expression patterns were consistent between qRT‐PCR and RNA‐Seq data, indicating the reliability of RNA‐Seq data. Practical applications: The results of this study provided new insights into comprehensive understanding of the genetic control of sugar metabolism and accumulation in plum fruits. The high-frequency electromagnetic noise caused by a frequency converter power supply has become the main composition of the vibration and noise of frequency-converter-driven PMSMs. Determining how to reduce this kind of noise is very important to improve motor performance. This paper analyzes the frequency characteristics of the high-frequency noise generated by an inverter, using the magnetic circuit analysis and Maxwell tensor methods. The switching frequency and the natural frequencies of the main modes are optimized according to the modal characteristics of the motor in order to reduce the vibration and noise of the motor. The results show that the high-frequency electromagnetic vibration and noise generated by the inverter is mainly caused by the high-frequency switching harmonic current. The frequencies of the vibration and noise are related to the switching frequency and the modulation wave frequency. At the same time, the simulation calculation of the natural frequencies of the main modes and the noise spectrum obtained from the experiment provide direction for the optimization of the vibration noise near the switching frequency. The switching frequency optimization and the natural frequency optimization based on the main modes of the motor can effectively reduce vibration and noise. Highly crystallized PbS films synthesized via low-cost method are still significant to the civilian use of PbS-based infrared detectors and solar cells. The strong coordinating solvent is key to synthesize uniform and highly crystallized PbS films by chemical bath. Herein three coordinating solvents including triethanolamine (TEA), ammonia liquor (NH 3 ∙H 2 O) and trisodium citrate (Na 3 C 6 H 5 O 7 , i.e. TSC) are trialed to synthesize the PbS films on p-type Si(100) wafers from alkaline rather than acidic chemical bath, followed by a 20-min rapid thermal treatment. A comparative study on the effect of coordinating solvents is also done on the microstructure and near-infrared optical absorption edge of the films. The PbS films are face-centered cubic in lattice structure regardless of the used coordinating solvents. TEA solvent is more suitable to synthesize highly crystallized PbS films than NH 3 ∙H 2 O and TSC solvents because of the much stronger coordination of Pb2+ with TEA molecules. With increase of molar concentration of TEA, the crystallite size of the PbS films gradually increases, and the shape of the particles changes from irregular to triangle-like. The resulting near-infrared optical absorption edge of the films in the range of 0.489 eV through 0.998 eV initially redshifts and then blueshifts. The transition in optical absorption edge from red shift to blue shift is closely related to the transition in film stress from tensile to compressive that is caused by the lattice distortion from the non-stoichiometry -induced point defects. • Comparative study on coordinating solvents NH 3 •H 2 O, TSC and TEA is done. • Coordinating solvent TEA is most suitable for PbS films. • Rapid thermal treatment is used to improve the crystallization of PbS films. • Nelson-Riley plot is used to calculate the lattice constant. • Mechanism of the formation of PbS in alkaline chemical bath is proposed. Background: Data are limited with regard to the association between low‐grade albuminuria (below the threshold of microalbuminuria) and high cardiovascular risk in normoalbuminuric Chinese adults free of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: A total of 32 650 participants aged over 40 years from seven regional centers in China were included in this study. The single‐void first morning urine sample was collected to measure the urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) and the data were divided into sex‐specific quartiles. The Framingham Risk Score (FRS) was used to identify participants at high risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD) over the next 10 years and the association between low‐grade albuminuria and high 10‐year Framingham risk for CHD (FRS ≥20%) was investigated. Results: Among males and females, the prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors (diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia) increased markedly with the elevation of UACR quartiles. Logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratios (ORs) for high 10‐year risk of CHD increased significantly from the second quartile in males (UACR: 4.78 ~ 7.53 mg/g, OR = 1.21, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05‐1.40) and the third quartile in females (UACR: 9.13 ~ 15.04 mg/g, OR = 3.07, 95% CI: 1.75‐5.40). Stratified analysis showed that in males, the association was especially pronounced in elderly, overweight/obese participants and those without diabetes and hypertension whereas in females, the association was especially pronounced in elderly, overweight/obese participants and those without diabetes and with hypertension. Internal short circuit (ISC) of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) would be triggered due. to inevitable electric vehicle collision, which pose serious threats to the safety and stability of the battery system. However, there is a lack of research on the ISC mechanism of LIBs under dynamic impact loadings. In this work, a coupled multi-physics model to describe the mechanical, electrical, and thermal response of LIBs under dynamic loading is established. The model can well predict the ISC and thermal runaway evolution process of LIBs with various SOCs under different impact energies. Four ISC modes are revealed through disassembling the LIBs after dynamic loading. Further, a strain-based ISC criterion is proposed to describe the triggering and voltage drop characteristics of each ISC mode. Subsequently, the mechanical-electrical-thermal behavior of LIBs in quasi-static and dynamic loading is compared and analyzed. Afterward, the triggering impact energy of four ISC modes for LIBs with different SOCs is concluded. The model proposed in this paper is currently based on small-sized batteries, and further study is required to extend its application to large-sized batteries. Most of the mechanical abuse to which lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are subjected in real-life scenarios is dynamic, and the safety issues involved are cause for concern. An accurate dynamic failure threshold is needed for both safety assessment and engineering protection of LIBs. In this work, the dynamic mechanical response and external voltage behavior of 18650 cylindrical LIBs with various state of charge (SOC) values are investigated via drop weight tests firstly. Then, a novel anisotropic model, incorporating the SOC effects and damage settings, is developed. The model can well predict the mechanical behaviors of LIBs for both quasi-static loading and dynamic radial compression. In addition, a satisfactory consistency is achieved between the cracks formed within the battery and the micro-CT scanning results. Further, a two-stage failure criterion defined by the jellyroll equivalent plastic strain is proposed, based on two special failure modes of LIBs, namely electrochemical failure and structural failure. The failure threshold for LIBs with multiple SOCs is established at various impact masses and shapes. Results provide a high-fidelity computational model for the battery safety behaviors upon dynamic mechanical loading and guidelines for the design of next-generation robust batteries. During growth and morphogenesis, plant cells respond to mechanical stresses resulting from spatiotemporal changes in the cell wall that bear high internal turgor pressure. Microtubule (MT) arrays are reorganized to align in the direction of maximal tensile stress, presumably reinforcing the local cell wall by guiding the synthesis of cellulose. However, how mechanical forces regulate MT reorganization remains largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that mechanical signaling that is based on the Catharanthus roseus RLK1-like kinase (CrRLK1L) subfamily receptor kinase FERONIA (FER) regulates the reorganization of cortical MT in cotyledon epidermal pavement cells (PCs) in Arabidopsis. Recessive mutations in FER compromised MT responses to mechanical perturbations, such as single-cell ablation, compression, and isoxaben treatment, in these PCs. These perturbations promoted the activation of ROP6 guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase) that acts directly downstream of FER. Furthermore, defects in the ROP6 signaling pathway negated the reorganization of cortical MTs induced by these stresses. Finally, reduction in highly demethylesterified pectin, which binds the extracellular malectin domains of FER and is required for FER-mediated ROP6 activation, also impacted mechanical induction of cortical MT reorganization. Taken together, our results suggest that the FER-pectin complex senses and/or transduces mechanical forces to regulate MT organization through activating the ROP6 signaling pathway in Arabidopsis. • Mechanical stresses rapidly promote ROP6 activation and microtubule rearrangement • FER and ROP6 affect mechanical-stress-induced microtubule rearrangement • FER and RopGEF14 are required for the ROP6 activation induced by mechanical stress • Pectin demethylesterification affects ROP6 activation induced by mechanical stress Tang et al. show that FER participates in sensing and/or transducing mechanical signal to directly regulate MT reorganization in the control of cell expansion and cell shape formation. Organic acids are key components that determine the taste and flavor of fruits and play a vital role in maintaining fruit quality and nutritive value. In this study, the fruits of two cultivars of passion fruit Yellow (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) and purple (Passiflora edulis f. edulis) were harvested at five different developmental stages (i.e., fruitlet, green, veraison, near-mature and mature stage) from an orchard located in subtropical region of Fujian Province, China. The contents of six organic acids were quantified using ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC), activities of citric acid related enzymes were determined, and expression levels of genes involved in citric acid metabolism were measured by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The results revealed that citric acid was the predominant organic acid in both cultivars during fruit development. The highest citric acid contents were observed in both cultivars at green stage, which were reduced with fruit maturity. Correlation analysis showed that citrate synthase (CS), cytosolic aconitase (Cyt-ACO) and cytosolic isocitrate dehydrogenase (Cyt-IDH) may be involved in regulating citric acid biosynthesis. Meanwhile, the PeCS2, PeACO4, PeACO5 and PeIDH1 genes may play an important role in regulating the accumulation of citric acid.
