Despite overall positive perceptions, many customers distrust direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies in regard to privacy and aftercare. Prior research suggests companies can assuage mistrust by personalizing communication when discussing sensitive health information. This content analysis of customer e-mails (N = 338) investigates the purpose, personalization, and use of the human voice strategy by direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies to gain trust. Results reveal that companies rarely use human voice when communicating with customers, most of the information provided is promotional, and they invite dialogue less over time. Prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) are socially monogamous rodents that form selective, long-lasting relationships with mates and with same-sex peers. It is unknown to what extent mechanisms supporting 'peer relationships' are similar to those involved in mate relationships. The formation of pair bonds is dependent on dopamine neurotransmission, whereas the formation of peer relationships is not, providing evidence of relationship type-specificity. The current study assessed endogenous structural changes in dopamine D1 receptor density in male and female voles across different social environments, including long-term same-sex partnerships, new same-sex partnerships, social isolation, and group housing. We also related dopamine D1 receptor density and social environment to behavior in social interaction and partner preference tests. Unlike prior findings in mate pairs, voles paired with new same-sex partners did not exhibit upregulated D1 binding in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) relative to controls paired from weaning. This is consistent with differences in relationship type: D1 upregulation in pair bonds aids in maintaining exclusive relationships through selective aggression, and we found that formation of new peer relationships did not enhance aggression. Isolation led to increases in NAcc D1 binding, and even across socially housed voles, individuals with higher D1 binding exhibited increased social avoidance. These findings suggest that elevated D1 binding may be both a cause and a consequence of reduced prosociality. These results highlight the neural and behavioral consequences of different non-reproductive social environments and contribute to growing evidence that the mechanisms underlying reproductive and non-reproductive relationship formation are distinct. Within the direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic test industry, attracting customers can be difficult especially due to the highly sensitive nature of these products. How these tests are communicated to consumers may be one avenue in which companies can impact customer purchase intentions. A 2 (message sidedness: one-way vs. two-way refutational) x 2 (hedging: present vs. absent) between-subjects experiment was conducted to understand how message features and prior product use influence information processing, risk and trust perceptions, and attitude toward the genetic test, which in turn, may influence direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic test purchase intentions. Results demonstrated that having used a genetic test in the past predicted participants' trust in the company, information processing, and risk judgments; however, among those who used a genetic test, viewing a message that included hedging tended to increase their trust in the message. Trust in the message and company, information processing, and risk judgments significantly predicted participants' attitudes toward genetic testing, which in turn predicted their purchase intentions. The results suggest that in the context of DTC genetic test messaging, practitioners should strive to increase consumer trust in the message and the company and facilitate information processing, and they should work to diminish perceived risk. These results suggest opportunities for identifying other message features that may influence message and company trust, information processing, risk judgments, and attitudes related to DTC genetic testing. Exaggerated sexual traits, such as ornaments and courtship displays, are crucial for mate acquisition in many species and are often subject to directional runaway selection. However, in the face of high predation risk, natural selection can result in a reduction of conspicuous precopulatory displays to avoid detection by potential predators. Sexual selection may then favour increased investment in inconspicuous postcopulatory traits. Here, we investigated the transgenerational effects of predation on precopulatory male courtship and postcopulatory sexual traits (testes size, sperm length) in a dung fly, Sepsis punctum (Sepsidae). Behavioural assays prior to selection document a marked decrease in male courtship displays in the presence of a predator, the Asian Ant Mantis (Odontomantis planiceps). However, after ten generations of experimental evolution, flies exhibited a marked increase in courtship, both in the absence and presence of a predator. Additionally, under sustained predation pressure, male and female body size decreased but male postcopulatory traits were not significantly affected. These results suggest that precopulatory courtship can be under strong sexual selection even in the face of predation pressure. Hybrid cells derived through fertilization or somatic cell fusion recognize and separate chromosomes of different origins. The underlying mechanisms are unknown but could prevent aneuploidy and tumor formation. Here, we acutely induce fusion between Drosophila neural stem cells (neuroblasts; NBs) and differentiating ganglion mother cells (GMCs) in vivo to define how epigenetically distinct chromatin is recognized and segregated. We find that NB-GMC hybrid cells align both endogenous (neuroblast-origin) and ectopic (GMC-origin) chromosomes at the metaphase plate through centrosome derived dual-spindles. Physical separation of endogenous and ectopic chromatin is achieved through asymmetric, microtubule-dependent chromatin retention in interphase and physical boundaries imposed by nuclear envelopes. The chromatin separation mechanisms described here could apply to the first zygotic division in insects, arthropods, and vertebrates or potentially inform biased chromatid segregation in stem cells. Cervical remodeling is critical for a healthy pregnancy. The proper regulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) turnover leads to remodeling throughout gestation, transforming the tissue from a stiff material to a compliant, extensible, viscoelastic tissue prepared for delivery. Small leucine-rich proteoglycans (SLRPs) regulate structural fiber assembly in the cervical ECM and overall tissue material properties. To quantify the SLRPs' mechanical role in the cervix, whole cervix specimens from nonpregnant and late pregnant knockout mice of SLRPs, decorin and biglycan, were subjected to cyclic load-unload, ramp-hold, and load-to-failure mechanical tests. Further, a fiber composite material model, accounting for collagen fiber bundle waviness, was developed to describe the cervix's three-dimensional large deformation equilibrium behavior. In nonpregnant tissue, SLRP knockout cervices have the same equilibrium material properties as wild-type tissue. In contrast, the load-to-failure and ramp-hold tests reveal SLRPs impact rupture and time-dependent relaxation behavior. Loss of decorin in nonpregnant (NP) cervices results in inferior rupture properties. After extensive remodeling, cervical strength is similar between all genotypes, but the SLRP-deficient tissue has a diminished ability to dissipate stress during a ramp-hold. In mice with a combined loss of decorin and biglycan, the pregnant cervix loses its extensibility, compliance, and viscoelasticity. An understanding of the structure-function relationships of collagen and elastic fibers to maintain extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis requires an understanding of the mechanisms executed by non-structural ECM molecules. Small-leucine rich proteoglycans (SLRPs) play key functions in biology by affecting collagen fibrillogenesis and regulating enzyme and growth factor bioactivities. In the current study, we evaluated collagen and elastic fiber structure-function relationships in mouse cervices using mice with genetic ablation of decorin and/or biglycan genes as representative of Class I SLRPs, and lumican gene representative of Class II SLRP. We identified structural defects in collagen fibril and elastic fiber organization in nonpregnant mice lacking decorin, or biglycan or lumican with variable resolution of defects noted during pregnancy. The severity of collagen and elastic fiber defects was greater in nonpregnant mice lacking both decorin and biglycan and defects were maintained throughout pregnancy. Loss of biglycan alone reduced tissue extensibility in nonpregnant mice while loss of both decorin and biglycan manifested in decreased rupture stretch in late pregnancy. Collagen cross-link density was similar in the Class I SLRP null mice as compared to wild-type nonpregnant and pregnant controls. A broader range in collagen fibril diameter along with an increase in mean fibril spacing was observed in the mutant mice compared to wild-type controls. Collectively, these findings uncover functional redundancy and hierarchical roles of Class I and Class II SLRPs as key regulators of cervical ECM remodeling in pregnancy. Communication of science through online media has become a primary means of disseminating and connecting science with a public audience. However, online media can come in many forms and stories of scientific discovery can be told by many individuals. We tested whether the relationship of a spokesperson to the science story being told (i.e., the narrative perspective) influences how people react and respond to online science media. We created five video stimuli that fell into three treatments: a scientist presenting their own research (male or female), a third-party summarizing research (male or female), and an infographic-like video with no on-screen presenter. Each of these videos presented the same fabricated science story about the discovery of a new ant species (Formicidae). We used Qualtrics to administer and obtain survey responses from 515 participants (~100 per video). Participants were randomly assigned to one of the videos and after viewing the stimulus answered questions assessing their perceptions of the video (trustworthiness and enjoyment), the spokesperson (trustworthiness and competence), scientists in general (competence and warmth), and attitudes towards the research topic and funding. Participants were also asked to recall what they had seen and heard. We determined that when participants watched a video in which a scientist presented their own research, participants perceived the spokesperson as having more expertise than a third-party presenter, and as more trustworthy and having more expertise than the no-spokesperson stimuli. Viewing a scientist presenting their own work also humanized the research, with participants more often including a person in their answer to the recall question. Overall, manipulating the narrative perspective of the source of a single online video communication effort is effective at impacting immediate objective outcomes related to spokesperson perceptions, but whether those objectives can positively influence long-term goals requires more investigation. Both academics and science communication practitioners have long been interested in the public's perceptions of scientists, impacts of those perceptions, and how communication tactics can affect them. Despite this interest, perceptual variables (e.g., trustworthiness, credibility, and fairness) are inconsistently conceptualized and operationalized within the literature. Through an examination of existing scales and a national survey (N = 605), this study suggests that communication researchers and practitioners should consider focusing on four distinct dimensions of trust. Beer brewing is a water intensive industry, which has led breweries to adopt different water conservation practices such as buying water offsets or using reclaimed water. In order to encourage widespread adoption of these practices, it is important that breweries see the benefits of their efforts. Beyond benefiting the environment, sustainable business practices can influence consumer behavior. To examine these effects on macro and craft brewers, we conducted a 2 (brewery type) by 3 (conservation practice) between-subjects online experiment. Results indicated any type of conservation practice increases purchase intentions for craft or macro breweries. However, although craft beer drinkers report being more concerned about water scarcity and more supportive of sustainability efforts, water conservation practices do not increase purchase intentions for macro beers among those who typically drink craft beer. For-profit organizations play a considerable role in the dissemination of scientific research and information. In the case of direct-to-consumer genetic testing, this is important because how consumers learn about genetic science can influence health decisions and support for science. Through a content analysis of Twitter posts (N = 1,000), this study examined how 23andMe balances traditional promotion, communicating product benefits, and sharing scientific research. Results indicated that about half of all posts share science news but sharing science has declined over time. This article explores walking as a form of inquiry within a study group at The University of British Columbia committed to a/r/tography. Three propositions are explored and as a result we think more deeply about being present, truly present, to that which we never anticipated. The first proposition, 'Go for a walk outside, find an object and do something with it', leads us to think more deeply about being present to possibility: kicking the rock. The second proposition, 'Walk around your neighbourhood with another. When you find unfamiliar ground, pause, and ground yourself', leads us to appreciating being present in‐between place and relationality. The third proposition, 'Follow one another in a line without stopping or speaking', invites us to explore being present to interiority. Teaching individuals a safety response when they encounter a firearm may be one way to prevent accidental injuries or death. Previous researchers have used behavioral skills training (BST) with and without in situ training to teach individuals with and without disabilities to engage in a safety response in the presence of a firearm. However, few studies have arranged BST to ensure the safety response occurred in response to a representative sample of all relevant stimulus features for which a response should be evoked. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the extent to which BST conducted in a single context established stimulus control that would evoke the safety response across a range of contexts under which young children could encounter a dangerous stimulus in a room in their house. All participants demonstrated a discriminated safety response following BST. Further, safety responses generalized across all contexts not associated with training for all participants. Spliceosomal introns are ubiquitous features of eukaryotic genomes, but the mechanisms responsible for their loss and gain are difficult to identify. Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites that have significantly reduced genomes and, as a result, have lost many if not all of their introns. In the microsporidian Encephalitozoon cuniculi, a relatively long intron was identified and was spliced at higher levels than the remaining introns. This long intron is part of a set of unique introns in two unrelated genes that show high levels of sequence conservation across diverse microsporidia. The introns possess a unique internal conserved region, which overlaps with a shared, predicted stem–loop structure. The unusual similarity and retention of these long introns in reduced microsporidian genomes could indicate that these introns function similarly, are homologous, or both. Arthropods require periodic molting in order to grow which presents a number of challenges to terrestrial taxa. Following ecdysis, the pliant new cuticle is susceptible to buckling under gravity and requires elevated hydrostatic pressure for support. Terrestrial species also require a mechanism of volume expansion and stretching of the integument prior to sclerotization, a need that is readily met in aquatic arthropods by drinking. Options for land arthropods include drinking of dew, swallowing of air, or using muscular contractions to inflate air sacs in tracheate taxa. In this study we tested the hypothesis that crinochete terrestrial isopods (Isopoda: Oniscidea: Crinocheta) exploit their capacity for active water vapor absorption (WVA) to increase volume during molting. Two crinochete species, Armadillidium vulgare and Porcellio dilatatus, were studied and compared with the non-absorbing species Ligidium lapetum (Oniscidea: Ligiamorpha). Pre-molting animals were identified by sternal CaCO3 deposits and exposed to 100% or 97% relative humidity (RH). Mass-changes were monitored by daily weighing and the timing of the posterior and anterior ecdyses was used to categorize time (days premolt and days post-molt) over the molt cycle. In each treatment RH, A.vulgare and P. dilatatus showed a progressive mass increase from 5 days premolt until the posterior or anterior ecdysis, followed abruptly by period of mass-loss lasting 3-4 days postmolt. The fact that the initial mass-gain is seen in 97% RH, a humidity below the water activity of the hemolymph, confirms the role of WVA. Similarly, since the post-molt mass-loss is seen in 100% RH, this must be due to active expulsion of water, possibly via maxillary urine. Concurrent changes in hemolymph osmolality were monitored in a separate batch of A. vulgare and show sustained osmolality during premolt and an abrupt decrease between the anterior and posterior ecdysis. These patterns indicate a mobilization of sequestered electrolytes during premolt, and a loss of electrolytes during the post-molt mass-loss, amounting to approximately 8.6% of total hemolymph solutes. WVA, in conjunction with pulses of elevated hemolymph pressure, provides an efficient mechanism of pre-molt volume expansion prior to and during the biphasic molt in these species. Premolt Ligidium lapetum exposed to same treatments failed to molt successfully and no premolt animals survived to day 3 (72 h) even in 100% RH. This study proposed a conceptual model of organization-public relationships (OPRs) that draws distinctions between the distal (enduring individual, organizational, and environmental factors) and proximal (situational individual and organizational behaviors and interactions) antecedents that precede and influence OPR perceptions. Using an online survey of 514 adults residing in the United States, this study identified which relational antecedents motivated individuals to enter OPRs across different types of organizations. Additionally, the study examined the relative influence of motives, perceived issue congruence, and perceived value congruence on individuals' perceptions of OPRs. Findings suggest social/cultural expectations and risk reduction are the most common motives for entering OPRs; however, perceived issue and value congruence with the organization are more influential than other antecedents in shaping cognitions regarding OPRs. The Internet poses a variety of risks at both the individual and societal levels including scams and the spread of misinformation. Older adults are especially vulnerable to many of these risks. This paper argues that one important strategy for combating such threats is through digital media literacy education. Although a good deal of research on digital media literacy for children exists, very little research exists on effective digital media literacy instructional interventions for adult populations. Background: Demand for treatment for amphetamine use is increasing internationally. Establishing effective pharmacotherapy provides broader treatment options for people who are dependent on amphetamine and may encourage engagement in evidence-based behavioral treatment. This study aimed to identify medicines that have potential in improving treatment outcomes for people who are dependent on amphetamines.Methods: Medline, PsycINFO, Embase and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched from 1997 to 2012 and again from 2013 to 2016. Studies on medications for amphetamine/methamphetamine dependence treatment were selected and assessed by two independent researchers. A meta-narrative review approach was used to synthesize results.Results: A total of 49 studies investigating 20 potential pharmacotherapies were eligible for inclusion. Of these, 35 studies related to 33 level II quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Five medications were subject to multiple RCTs. Four of these medicines demonstrated some limited evidence of benefit for reducing amphetamine use: methylphenidate (as reported in three studies), buprenorphine (in three studies), modafinil (two studies), and naltrexone (one study). Four RCTs of dexamphetamine suggest its benefit on secondary outcomes such as treatment retention, but not for reducing amphetamine use. Six other medicines indicate the potential for efficacy, but the number of studies is too small to draw conclusions.Conclusions: No medicine has as yet demonstrated sufficient, consistent evidence of effectiveness to support its use in routine treatment. High study drop-out and poor medication adherence limits the strength of evidence and raises important clinical questions about how to improve treatment engagement and outcomes. Reviews of editorial practices and academic studies have shown that journalists often rely on organization websites—and online newsrooms in particular—to inform news stories. Yet, at a time when many academics are called upon as experts by the media, university newsrooms have been ignored. To fill this gap, this study assesses newsrooms of universities to determine whether they are providing adequate resources to cover the institution or identify experts. Previous research demonstrated higher ranked Fortune 500 companies have more comprehensive newsrooms, potentially putting them at an advantage when it comes to news coverage. To better understand whether disparities exist among the top US institutions, this study features a content analysis of the newsrooms of the top 202 universities ranked by U.S. News & World Report. Findings show that although higher ranked universities typically feature more comprehensive newsrooms, universities at all levels are missing opportunities to provide journalists with information necessary to cover the university, thus limiting visibility to outside stakeholders. The most common features were internally written news stories and links to social media. Resources specifically for journalists were less common. 1. Identify experiences that affect professional identity formation of hospice and palliative medicine physicians. 2. Construct a preliminary model for professional identity formation in hospice and palliative medicine. The transformative evolution of becoming a hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) physician requires learners to integrate knowledge from prior training while learning to "think, act, and feel" like a palliative care physician. The drivers of professional identity formation (PIF) among HPM physicians are not well understood, and their impact on training is unknown. This study aims to identify factors that affect the PIF of HPM physicians. Identify experiences that affect PIF for HPM physicians. Construct a preliminary model for PIF in HPM. In this qualitative study, we conducted semistructured interviews with fellowship-trained HPM physicians practicing in the Southwest. We performed thematic analysis using NVivo software (QSR International) in an iterative, team-based process. We interviewed 10 HPM fellowship-trained physicians who were non-Hispanic White (100%), 70% female and 30% male, and coming from 5 primary disciplines (internal, family, and emergency medicine, surgery, and pediatrics). Our preliminary analysis identified 3 key themes that affect PIF for HPM physicians: formal curriculum, interactions with interdisciplinary team members (particularly chaplains and social workers), and role models and mentors. Participants spoke extensively about role models including attendings, other clinicians, department leadership, faculty, and co-fellows who were supportive and patient-centered, modeled good communication, were compassionate, and encouraged learning. Interviewees were universally influenced in their PIF by supportive and patient-centered role models from various backgrounds and disciplines throughout training. Formal didactics and communication curriculum were also key ingredients in becoming a palliateur across participants. HPM is a relatively new specialty,and information gained from this study can provide a model for PIF in palliative medicine, can serve as groundwork for HPM fellowship training curriculum and educator development, and can aid HPM educators in nurturing PIF among learners. Human-induced soil degradation has led to declining yields and soil fertility in many parts of the world. Conservation agriculture has been proposed as a strategy to ensure more sustainable land use. While conservation agriculture, based on minimum soil disturbance, crop residue retention, and diversification may improve a range of soil characteristics and can be a potential cropping system for improving farmer resilience to climate change, increased weed pressure is often an impediment to its widespread adoption in southern Africa. Weed control under conservation agriculture in other countries has been linked to increased herbicide use, but concerns about herbicide resistance, access to chemicals, and environmental impacts highlight the need for alternative weed control strategies accessible for smallholders. Farmers in semi-arid regions contend with the additional challenge of low biomass production, which may limit the weed-suppressing benefits of permanent soil cover. This paper reviews the regional applicability of various mechanical (manual weeding, weeding using animal traction, weed seed harvest), thermal (soil solarization, weed steaming, flaming), chemical (herbicides, seed coating), and cultural (crop competition, crop residue retention, intercropping, crop rotation) weed control strategies. For each strategy, benefits and challenges were assessed and contextualized with the circumstances of rainfed smallholder farmers in southern Africa. We found that (1) no single solution can solve all weed control challenges under current conservation agriculture systems; (2) success of weed control strategies is largely contingent upon site-specific conditions, including soil type, dominant weed species, and socioeconomic factors; and (3) practices new to southern Africa, such as weed steaming, merit localized research. Previous reviews have addressed various weed control strategies, but a comprehensive review of strategies available to smallholder farmers in semi-arid southern Africa is lacking. Few interventions for homeless youth have leveraged the potential of mHealth technologies, in part because of the limited data on phone behaviors, perceptions, and intervention preferences among youth experiencing homelessness. We conducted 9 focus groups (n = 52 homeless youth) and 41 individual structured interviews also with homeless youth in underserved communities in Baltimore and Washington, DC, to ascertain how youth perceived their mobile phone, acquired and maintained mobile services over time, and thought mHealth programs for this population should be designed. We also measured phone use, functionality, source, duration of ownership, and reasons for changing phones or numbers. Results showed that mobile coverage was high, as most youth self-purchased phones or received gift payments from others. Maintaining mobile connectivity was often challenging because of financial constraints and interpersonal conflict. Youth valued phones to access social support but used several tactics to avoid perceived negative consequences of phone ownership, such as harassment, theft, or relational disputes. Youth most preferred mHealth content relating to sexual, reproductive, and mental health provided that mobile communication was confidential, empowering, and integrated with other digital media. Issues: The aim of this study was to undertake a systematic review on effective treatment options for co-occurring substance use and borderline personality disorders to examine effective treatments for this group.Approach: A systematic review using a narrative analysis approach was undertaken as there were too few studies within each intervention type to undertake a meta-analysis. The inclusion criteria comprised of English language studies (between 1999 and 2014) and a sample of >70% borderline personality disorder, with measurable outcomes for substance use and borderline personality disorder. All abstracts were screened (n = 376) resulting in 49 studies assessed for eligibility, with 10 studies, examining three different treatment types, included in the final review.Key Findings: There were four studies that examined dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), three studies that examined dynamic deconstructive psychotherapy (DDP) and three studies that examined dual-focused schema therapy (DFST). Both DBT and DDP demonstrated reductions in substance use, suicidal/self-harm behaviours and improved treatment retention. DBT also improved global and social functioning. DFST reduced substance use and both DFST and DPP improved treatment utilisation, but no other significant positive changes were noted.Implications: Overall, there were a small number of studies with small sample sizes, so further research is required. However, in the absence of a strong evidence base, there is a critical need to respond to this group with co-occurring borderline personality disorder and substance use.Conclusion: Both DBT and DPP showed some benefit in reducing symptoms, with DBT the preferred option given its superior evidence base with women in particular. Introduction There is a growing body of work regarding alcohol use and the workplace. However, little work has been conducted on risk factors for alcohol use in male-dominated industries. Method A systematic review of risk factors for alcohol use in male-dominated industries was undertaken. A male-dominated industry was defined as an industry comprising predominantly male workers (i.e. ⩾70%). This included agriculture, construction, mining, manufacturing, transport, and utilities industries. Searches were undertaken of major electronic databases (CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Informit, PsycINFO, PubMed and Scopus), the grey literature, and reference lists of retrieved papers for English language studies published between January 1990 and June 2012. Results Eighteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Most were cross-sectional in design. Methodological quality was assessed as moderate in nine studies and weak in the remainder. Factors associated with risky alcohol use were categorised into seven domains: demographic (being male, middle age), individual (depressed, negative life events), social norms at work (permissive drinking norms), work conditions (high workloads and job stress, low collegial support), team environment (supervisory abuse), work-home interference (using alcohol to unwind after work), and structural/socio-economic (lower SES workers), with some attenuation by income and other SES factors. Conclusion Alcohol primary prevention strategies and future research that targets specific high risk industries are warranted to address workplace drinking norms, reduce job workloads and stress, and improve workplace support. Multi-pronged, tailored strategies are needed in male-dominated industries that reflect the needs of high risk groups as well as targeting environmental, social, and contextual factors. As traditional thinking about science communication is modified to emphasize engagement with science, public relations theorizing--particularly related to dialogic communication--may contribute to science communication theory and practice. Despite calls to move beyond the deficit model, we argue that many science organizations continue to practice one-way communication and underutilize social media's potential for dialogue. To support our argument, we provide data to illustrate how U.S. federal government science agencies use new media platforms for information dissemination rather than engagement. Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to identify mental health interventions within male-dominated industries. Design/methodology/approach -- A systematic literature review was undertaken, examining mental health interventions within male-dominated industries. Major electronic databases, grey literature and reference lists for English language studies published January 1990-June 2012 were searched. Independent extraction of the studies was completed by two reviewers using predefined data fields including study quality measures. Findings -- Five studies met inclusion criteria. The available evidence suggests that effective interventions to address anxiety and depression in male-dominated industries include: improving mental health literacy and knowledge, increasing social support, improving access to treatment, providing education for managers and addressing workload issues. Practical implications -- Working conditions and the workplace can have a significant impact on a worker's mental health. Work-related factors including working conditions, job demands and social support in the workplace are particularly important for the mental health workers. Indeed, poor work conditions have been associated with poorer mental health outcomes in particular anxiety and depression, however, little work has been conducted on mental health interventions in the workplace and further the impact on male-dominated industries. Originality/value -- Overall, the body of evidence supporting effective interventions for mental health problems among workers in male-dominated industries is limited. Nonetheless, the evidence does suggest that mental health interventions in male-dominated industries is logistically feasible and can have some positive impact on the mental health of workers, particularly for high prevalence low severity disorders such as anxiety and depression. Background: Previous studies of self-practice/self-reflection (SP/SR) CBT training have found that trainees report significant benefits from practising CBT techniques on themselves (self-practice) and reflecting on their experience (self-reflection) as a formal part of their CBT training. However, not all trainees experience the same level of benefit from SP/SR and not all types of training course produce benefits to the same extent. Aims: This paper examines the question: What factors influence trainees’ reported benefit from SP/SR? The aim was to develop a model to maximize the value of SP/SR training. Method: The authors used a grounded theory analysis of four SP/SR training courses, varying along several dimensions, to derive a model that could account for the data. Results: A model was derived comprising of seven elements: Two outcomes – “Experience of Benefit” and “Engagement with the Process” – that mutually influence one another; and five other influencing factors – “Course Structure and Requirements”, “Expectation of Benefit”, “Feeling of Safety with the Process”, “Group Process”, and “Available Personal Resources” – that mediate the impact on Engagement with the Process and Experience of Benefit from SP/SR. Conclusions: A model that provides guidance about the best ways to set up and develop SP/SR programs has been developed. This model may now be subject to empirical testing by trainers and researchers. Implications and recommendations for the design and development of future SP/SR programs are discussed. Koebner isomorphic response describes the phenomenon of histopathologically identical skin lesions of a preceding cutaneous disease appearing in sites of trauma. Wolf isotopic response describes the phenomenon of a new skin disease appearing in the site of an unrelated cutaneous disease. Neither of the phenomena has been reported in relation to systemic lupus erythematosus. This report describes a 17-year-old girl with systemic lupus erythematosus exhibiting particularly severe cutaneous involvement confined primarily to sun-exposed areas presenting with a dermatomal band of atrophic, scaling, erythematous papules, and plaques on her left shoulder extending down her left arm after herpes zoster eruption. The histopathologil result showed lupus erythematosus. This phenomenon is best considered as a Koebner isomorphic response, although Wolf isotopic response has some clinical relevance as well. Introduction and Aims There are no medications approved for the treatment of methamphetamine withdrawal. Wake-promoting agent modafinil has recently been proposed as a viable option. This paper reports on the results of a pilot study that tested the feasibility of modafinil in an inpatient withdrawal setting during acute methamphetamine withdrawal. Design and Methods In a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study, 19 methamphetamine dependent participants received modafinil ( n = 9) or placebo ( n = 10) daily for 7 days (200 mg for the first 5 days and 100 mg on days 6 and 7). Primary outcomes were retention in treatment and severity of withdrawal symptoms. Secondary outcomes were methamphetamine craving, sleep and physiological outcomes. Results There were no significant differences between groups on retention in treatment, withdrawal severity, craving, sleep or physiological outcomes. There were no adverse events or side-effects reported. Conclusions Modafinil was found to be tolerable and well accepted by methamphetamine users and feasible for short-term inpatient withdrawal, but the sample was too small to detect treatment effects. Mental health problems are common among drug treatment clients with most symptoms related to anxiety and depression. In this study, we used an established manual for alcohol and drug practitioners known as PsyCheck that outlines basic mental health screening and intervention for high prevalence disorders. The aim of this study was to examine changes in clinician's mental health screening and intervention activities post-training. One hundred ninety-five staff members from 13 alcohol and drug services across Australia participated in the training, which consisted of 2 days of practical instruction in comorbidity and the use of the PsyCheck manual. The package takes a symptom-focused approach. A clinical file audit was undertaken prior to and 6 months after the training to examine changes in clinicians' screening and intervention activities. The results showed increases in screening for mental health problems 6 months after training. Although the study is methodologically limited, it suggests that manualised treatments, with the addition of training and post-training support, can improve alcohol and other drug practitioners focus on mental health screening and intervention. The aim of this study is to determine if the Odc1 gene, which encodes ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), the rate-limiting enzyme in polyamine biosynthesis, is directly regulated by the androgen receptor (AR) in skeletal muscle myoblasts and if Odc1 regulates myoblast proliferation and differentiation. We previously showed that expression of Odc1 is decreased in muscle from AR knockout male mice. In this study, we show in vivo that Odc1 expression is also decreased >60% in muscle from male muscle-specific AR knockout mice. In normal muscle homeostasis, Odc1 expression is regulated by age and sex, reflecting testosterone levels, as muscle of adult male mice expresses high levels of Odc1 compared with age-matched females and younger males. In vitro, expression of Odc1 is 10- and 1.5-fold higher in proliferating mouse C2C12 and human skeletal muscle myoblasts, respectively, than in differentiated myotubes. Dihydrotestosterone increases Odc1 levels 2.7- and 1.6-fold in skeletal muscle cell myoblasts after 12 and 24 h of treatment, respectively. Inhibition of ODC activity in C2C12 myoblasts by α-difluoromethylornithine decreases myoblast number by 40% and 66% following 48 and 72 h of treatment, respectively. In contrast, overexpression of Odc1 in C2C12 myoblasts results in a 27% increase in cell number vs. control when cells are grown under differentiation conditions for 96 h. This prolonged proliferation is associated with delayed differentiation, with reduced expression of the differentiation markers myogenin and Myf6 in Odc1-overexpressing cells. The naturally occurring polyamines, spermidine, spermine, and their precursor putrescine, play indispensible roles in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, from basic DNA synthesis to regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation. The rate-limiting polyamine biosynthetic enzymes, ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase, are essential for mammalian development, with knockout of the genes encoding these enzymes, Odc1 and Amd1, causing early embryonic lethality in mice. In muscle, the involvement of polyamines in muscle hypertrophy is suggested by the concomitant increase in cardiac and skeletal muscle mass and polyamine levels in response to anabolic agents including β-agonists. In addition to β-agonists, androgens, which increase skeletal mass and strength, have also been shown to stimulate polyamine accumulation in a number of tissues. In muscle, androgens act via the androgen receptor to regulate expression of polyamine biosynthetic enzyme genes, including Odc1 and Amd1, which may be one mechanism via which androgens promote muscle growth. Aims: The comorbidity of substance use and mental health problems poses a significant challenge for alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment services. In many cases, AOD practitioners do not have experience or training in identifying or managing mental health conditions. Methods: This project examined the implementation of screening and intervention practices for mental health disorders among AOD clients. Training and supervision was provided to 20 AOD practitioners across five sites in four agencies with a focus on enhancing skills in detection of, and intervention for, mental health conditions among their clients. A package developed for this purpose, known as PsyCheck, was used. A random file audit was undertaken to examine changes in detection of mental health conditions. Findings: There were significant improvements in detection after training and supervision, with detection rates almost doubling in this time. Conclusions: Training and supervision using the PsyCheck package appears to have the potential to improve mental health detection and intervention in AOD services. Issues. Treatment seeking for methamphetamine withdrawal is low in Australia. Insufficient knowledge regarding the withdrawal syndrome of methamphetamine and the appropriate management of these symptoms may be a contributing factor to the low treatment attendance. Approach. A systematic review was performed using a range of electronic databases. Key Findings. Common methamphetamine withdrawal symptoms include symptoms relating to depression, agitation, cognitive impairment and fatigue. These symptoms may last anywhere from a few days to a few months. Methamphetamine withdrawal is most commonly undertaken in an outpatient setting, and psychosocial interventions remain the primary treatment approach in Australia. Two withdrawal scales (Amphetamine Withdrawal Questionnaire and Amphetamine Cessation Symptom Assessment) have been validated for the assessment of methamphetamine withdrawal. Only a small number of medications for methamphetamine withdrawal have been investigated, and to date no medications stand out over the others. Implications. Current recommendations for methamphetamine withdrawal tend to be based on clinical opinion and subsequently vary between settings. More research in the area is essential to ensure the development of more targeted, timely and effective withdrawal treatment interventions. Conclusion. A systematic study of 12 ferric and ferrous Kβ X-ray emission spectra (XES) is presented. The factors contributing to the Kβ main line and the valence to core region of the spectra are experimentally assessed and quantitatively evaluated. While the Kβ main line spectra are dominated by spin state contributions, the valence to core region is shown to have greater sensitivity to changes in the chemical environment. A density functional theory (DFT) based approach is used to calculate the experimental valence spectra and to evaluate the contributions to experimental intensities and energies. The spectra are found to be dominated by iron np to 1s electric dipole allowed transitions, with pronounced sensitivity to spin state, ligand identity, ligand ionization state, hybridization state, and metal-ligand bond lengths. These findings serve as an important calibration for future applications to iron active sites in biological and chemical catalysis. Background: Attitude to, and confidence in, working with comorbidity is an important feature of effective engagement when working with clients with mental health and substance use issues. Substance use treatment clinicians continue to voice concerns about their own skill and abilities to work with this complex client group. PsyCheck is a package designed to support drug and alcohol workers to implement screening and brief intervention for common mental health problems. Aim: This study used a whole workforce approach to training using the PsyCheck package, and examined changes in clinicians' attitude, skill and confidence in working with comorbidity post training. Method: A pre-post test evaluation design was used. Thirteen national alcohol and drug services were offered a two day training program in the PsyCheck package. Clinicians' attitude to comorbidity was measured by the Comorbidity Problems Perceptions Questionnaire. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted. Results: Results indicate that involvement in the training program was, overall, a positive experience for clinicians. Attitude to, and confidence in, working with comorbidity appeared to improve following exposure to the training. Conclusions: Although there are limitations in the design, training appears to have a positive impact on clinicians self reported attitudes and confidence in dealing with comorbidity issues. Abstract: Craving is frequently reported as a trigger for relapse by those trying to remain abstinent from psychoactive substances. Metacognitive beliefs about managing craving may play an important role in determining further cognition and behavior. They are, therefore, important to measure in treatment and may serve as target cognitions to be modified in support of behavioral change. As part of the assessment battery of a randomized controlled trial among 214 methamphetamine users, we included the Craving Beliefs Questionnaire (CBQ), a measure designed to assess an individual''s perception of the potential negative impact of craving, at baseline. Changes in abstinence rates were significantly related to CBQ score, suggesting that craving beliefs are associated with changes in methamphetamine use. Further validation of the CBQ is warranted. Future clinical research among methamphetamine users could focus on directly manipulating craving beliefs through cognitive therapy to affect abstinence. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: Mental health problems, particularly anxiety and mood disorders, are common among clients of alcohol and other drug treatment services, and symptom management is increasingly within the purview of alcohol and drug workers. A mental health screening toolkit, PsyCheck, was created for use by non-mental health specialists to detect common mental health problems, to screen for suicide risk, and to explore mental health treatment history among drug treatment clients. Aims: This study was undertaken to (a) choose a brief mental health screen to incorporate into PsyCheck and (b) identify cut-off scores suitable for clinical use. Method: One hundred and seventeen individuals in treatment for an alcohol or drug problem completed the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28), and the mental health module of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview-Auto (CIDI-A). ROC curve analysis was used to identify optimum cut-off scores for identifying clients who are likely to have a mental health disorder. Results: The SRQ had good validity and was superior to the frequently used GHQ-28, and was therefore chosen for inclusion in PsyCheck. A cut-off score of over 4 gave the best balance of sensitivity (0.809) and specificity (0.837). In addition, two mental health treatment questions were highly correlated with a current mental health disorder. Introduction and Aims. Despite the high prevalence of methamphetamine use and dependence in Australia, withdrawal treatment access for methamphetamine accounts for only 9.3% of total withdrawal treatment presentations. Furthermore, treatment completion for methamphetamine users is one of the lowest of all drugs. There is not a clear understanding for the reasons why methamphetamine withdrawal treatment presentations and efficacy is so low. This study examined the current practices and barriers to methamphetamine withdrawal treatment in Australia. Design and Methods. Twenty-four interviews were conducted with employees from alcohol and other drug services from around Australia. These services were questioned about a range of issues relating to methamphetamine withdrawal treatment including current treatment practices, perception of the effectiveness of current treatment and barriers to treatment. Results. The study found that current practices in the treatment of methamphetamine withdrawal are diverse and uncertain. Service providers identified a great number of barriers to the treatment of methamphetamine withdrawal that encompass personal, social, cultural and organisational barriers. Discussion and Conclusions. The results of this study suggest that alcohol and other drug service providers are not clear about the best way to respond to clients seeking methamphetamine withdrawal treatment. Furthermore, the study showed a general pessimism about withdrawal treatment for this group. Introduction and Aims. The use of methamphetamine is widespread and poses significant challenges for treatment providers. Much of the treatment knowledge about this group has been extrapolated from studies of treatment for cocaine dependence. Medications have been shown to be of limited effectiveness for methamphetamine users, making psychological interventions the treatment of choice. Approach. This paper describes a systematic review of cognitive - behavioural and behavioural interventions for methamphetamine users. A systematic search of published literature was undertaken focusing only on randomised trials. Key Findings. There were a relatively small number of intervention studies that compared cognitive - behavioural or behavioural interventions using randomised trial methodology. Most commonly, studies examined cognitive - behaviour therapy (CBT) and/or contingency management (CM). Treatment with CBT appears to be associated with reductions in methamphetamine use and other positive changes, even over very short periods of treatment (two and four sessions). CM studies found a significant reduction of methamphetamine during application of the procedure, but it is not clear if these gains are sustained at post-treatment follow-up. Implications. The review highlights that there are effective treatments for methamphetamine dependence. Alcohol and other drug (AOD) clinicians are familiar with these types of interventions and should use them and convey to clients that they are effective. Services and policy makers should ensure that best practice interventions are implemented within AOD services. Conclusion. Psychological intervention is effective in addressing methamphetamine use and dependence. CBT and contingency management are two accessible interventions that are implemented easily within current AOD services. The present study sought to replicate and extend a small pilot study conducted by Baker, Boggs&Lewin (2001) which demonstrated that brief interventions consisting of motivational interviewing and cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) were feasible and associated with better outcomes compared with a control condition.Randomized controlled trial (RCT).Greater Brisbane Region of Queensland and Newcastle, NSW, Australia.The study was conducted among 214 regular amphetamine users.Demographic characteristics, past and present alcohol and other drug use and mental health, treatment, amphetamine-related harms and severity of dependence.The main finding of this study was that there was a significant increase in the likelihood of abstinence from amphetamines among those receiving two or more treatment sessions. In addition, the number of treatment sessions attended had a significant short-term beneficial effect on level of depression. There were no intervention effects on any other variables (HIV risk-taking, crime, social functioning and health). Overall, there was a marked reduction in amphetamine use among this sample over time and, apart from abstinence rates and short-term effects on depression level, this was not differential by treatment group. Reduction in amphetamine use was accompanied by significant improvements in stage of change, benzodiazepine use, tobacco smoking, polydrug use, injecting risk-taking behaviour, criminal activity level, and psychiatric distress and depression level.A stepped-care approach is recommended. The first step in providing an effective intervention among many regular amphetamine users, particularly those attending non-treatment settings, may include provision of: a structured assessment of amphetamine use and related problems; self-help material; and regular monitoring of amphetamine use and related harms. Regular amphetamine users who present to treatment settings could be offered two sessions of CBT, while people with moderate to severe levels of depression may best be offered four sessions of CBT for amphetamine use from the outset, with further treatment for amphetamine use and/or depression depending on response. The present study extends the findings of a pilot study conducted among regular amphetamine users in Newcastle, NSW, in 1998. It compares key features between current participants in a state capital city (Brisbane) and a regional city (Newcastle) and between the 1998 and current Newcastle sample. Cross-sectional survey. Brisbane and Newcastle, Australia. The survey was conducted among 214 regular amphetamine users within the context of a randomized controlled trial of brief interventions for amphetamine use. Demographic characteristics, past and present alcohol and other drug use and mental health, treatment, amphetamine-related harms and severity of dependence. The main findings were as follows: (i) the rate of mental health problems was high among regular amphetamine users and these problems commonly emerged after commencement of regular amphetamine use; (ii) there were regional differences in drug use with greater accessibility to a wider range of drugs in a state capital city and greater levels of injecting risk-taking behaviour outside the capital city environment; and (iii) there was a significant increase in level of amphetamine use and percentage of alcohol users, a trend for a higher level of amphetamine dependence and a significant reduction in the percentage of people using heroin and benzodiazepines among the 2002 Newcastle cohort compared to the 1998 cohort. Further longitudinal research is needed to elucidate transitions from one drug type to another and from recreational to injecting and regular use and the relationship between drug use and mental health in prospective studies among users. Intervention research should evaluate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at: preventing transition to injecting and regular use of amphetamines; toward reducing levels of depression among amphetamine users and interventions among people with severe psychopathology and personality disorders; and toward reducing the prevalence of tobacco dependence among amphetamine users. Background: Biliary reconstruction represents a relatively untested frontier in laparoscopy.Methods: Retrospective review of all patients who underwent laparoscopic biliary operations at Legacy Health System from 1998 to 2003.Results: Seven patients underwent laparoscopic biliary reconstruction. Indications included benign calculous disease in 4 patients, benign stricture on 1 patient, choledochal cyst in 1 patient, and malignant biliary obstruction in 1 patient. Operations performed included choledochoduodenostomy, hepaticojejunostomy, stricturoplasty, choledochal cyst excision with hepaticojejunostomy, and cholecystojejunostomy. Median operative time was 300 minutes. Median hospital stay was 4 days. One perioperative complication of a bowel obstruction required reoperation. Median follow-up was 15 months. One patient died of metastatic cancer 8 months after surgery. All other patients are symptom free with no signs of stricture or recurrent biliary obstruction.Conclusions: Laparoscopic biliary reconstruction represents a viable treatment option in carefully selected patients. This study used a novel cue exposure paradigm to investigate the differences between high- and low-risk drinkers in their desire to drink during a drinking session. Fifty-three self-selected participants were assigned to high- or low-risk drinking groups based on their self-reported consumption of alcohol, then compared on their desire to drink over a 90 min paced drinking session. High-risk drinkers showed increasing desire over the session, while low-risk drinkers' desire began to decrease after only a short drinking period. The perceived and actual effects of the alcohol did not appear to be able to account for the difference. Results are discussed with reference to issues of impaired control. There are clear signs that amphetamine use is increasing in Australia and internationally, yet there are few services that offer amphetamine-specific interventions. This review examines the evidence for the use of psychosocial interventions for amphetamine users. The literature is very limited in the number of well-conducted, controlled studies, but the evidence available suggests that cognitive-behavioural therapy appears to be current best practice. Motivational interviewing has been recommended as a strategy to assist those ambivalent for treatment. There is also some evidence that contingency management is effective while clients are in treatment. The effectiveness of other types of intervention is not well supported. The literature is particularly hindered by a paucity of well-conducted studies among primary amphetamine users. Recommendations about appropriate interventions for use in clinical settings are offered and directions for future research are considered. [Baker A, Lee NK.
