We study the coupled charge density wave (CDW) and insulator-to-metal transitions in the 2D quantum material 1T-TaS2. By applying in situ cryogenic 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy with in situ electrical resistance measurements, we directly visualize the CDW transition and establish that the transition is mediated by basal dislocations (stacking solitons). We find that dislocations can both nucleate and pin the transition and locally alter the transition temperature Tc by nearly ~75 K. This finding was enabled by the application of unsupervised machine learning to cluster five-dimensional, terabyte scale datasets, which demonstrate a one-to-one correlation between resistance--a global property--and local CDW domain-dislocation dynamics, thereby linking the material microstructure to device properties. Efforts to improve energy storage depend greatly on the development of efficient electrode materials. Recently, strain has been employed as an alternate approach to improve ion mobility. While lattice strain has been well-researched in catalytic applications, its effects on electrochemical energy storage are largely limited to computational studies due to complexities associated with strain control in nanomaterials as well as loss of strain due to the phase change of the active material during charging–discharging. In this work, we overcome these challenges and investigate the effects of strain on supercapacitor performance in Li-ion-based energy devices. We synthesize epitaxial Fe3O4@MnFe2O4 (core@shell) nanoparticles with varying shell thickness to control the lattice strain. A narrow voltage window for electrochemical testing is used to limit the storage mechanism to lithiation–delithiation, preventing a phase change and maintaining structural strain. Cyclic voltammetry reveals a pseudocapacitive behavior and similar levels of surface charge storage in both strained- and unstrained-MnFe2O4 samples; however, diffusive charge storage in the strained sample is twice as high as the unstrained sample. The strained-MnFe2O4 electrode exceeds the performance of the unstrained-MnFe2O4 electrode in energy density by ∼33%, power density by ∼28%, and specific capacitance by ∼48%. Density functional theory shows lower formation energies for Li-intercalation and lower activation barrier for Li-diffusion in strained-MnFe2O4, corresponding to a threefold increase in the diffusion coefficient. The enhanced Li-ion diffusion rate in the strained-electrodes is further confirmed using the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique. New properties and exotic quantum phenomena can form due to periodic nanotextures, including Moire patterns, ferroic domains, and topologically protected magnetization and polarization textures. Despite the availability of powerful tools to characterize the atomic crystal structure, the visualization of nanoscale strain-modulated structural motifs remains challenging. Here, we develop nondestructive real-space imaging of periodic lattice distortions in thin epitaxial films and report an emergent periodic nanotexture in a Mott insulator. Specifically, we combine iterative phase retrieval with unsupervised machine learning to invert the diffuse scattering pattern from conventional X-ray reciprocal-space maps into real-space images of crystalline displacements. Our imaging in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices exhibiting checkerboard strain modulation substantiates published phase-field model calculations. Furthermore, the imaging of biaxially strained Mott insulator Ca2RuO4 reveals a strain-induced nanotexture comprised of nanometer-thin metallic-structure wires separated by nanometer-thin Mott-insulating-structure walls, as confirmed by cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy (cryo-STEM). The nanotexture in Ca2RuO4 film is induced by the metal-to-insulator transition and has not been reported in bulk crystals. We expect the phasing of diffuse X-ray scattering from thin crystalline films in combination with cryo-STEM to open a powerful avenue for discovering, visualizing, and quantifying the periodic strain-modulated structures in quantum materials. Niosomes were prepared using a novel supercritical carbon dioxide based method to simultaneously encapsulate ferrous sulfate and vitamin D3as hydrophilic and hydrophobic cargo, respectively. Vesicle particle size was determined to be bimodal with peak diameters of 1.44 ± 0.16 μm and 7.21 ± 0.64 μm, with the smaller peak comprising 98.8% of the total niosomal volume. Encapsulation efficiency of ferrous sulfate was 25.1 ± 0.2% and encapsulation efficiency of vitamin D3was 95.9 ± 1.47%. Physical stability of the produced niosomes was assessed throughout a storage period of 21 days. Niosomes showed good physical stability at 20 °C, but storage at 4 °C showed an initial burst release, indicating possible rupture of the niosomal membrane. Biomineralization strategies include the use of hydrogels to direct the formation of composite, single-crystal-like structures with unique structure-property profiles. Application of similar synthetic approaches to transition-metal oxides has the promise to yield low-temperature routes to hierarchically structured crystals that are optimized for a range of applications. Here, growth of hematite (a-Fe2O3) within a silica hydrogel resulted in hierarchical, mosaic crystals preferentially expressing catalytically active {110} facets, which are absent in solution-grown controls. Quantitative structural and compositional analysis reveals architectural changes that begin with the incorporation of silicon into the hematite lattice and propagate through to the nanoscale domain structure and assembly, leading to microscale morphologies that show improved photocatalytic performance. Association of organic matter (OM) with mineral phases via co-precipitation is expected to be a widespread process in environments with high OM input and frequent mineral dissolution and re-precipitation. In contrast to surface area-limited adsorption processes, co-precipitation may allow for greater carbon (C) accumulation. However, the potential sub-micrometer scale structural and compositional differences that affect the bioavailability of co-precipitated C are largely unknown. In this study, we used a combination of high-resolution analytical electron microscopy and bulk spectroscopy to probe interactions between a mineral phase (ferrihydrite, nominally Fe 2 O 3 •0.5H 2 O) and organic soil-derived water-extractable OM (WEOM). In co-precipitated WEOM-Fe, nanometer-scale scanning transmission electron microscopy with electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) revealed increased Fe(II) and less Fe aggregation relative to adsorbed WEOM-Fe. Spatially distinct lower- and higher-energy C regions were detected in both adsorbed and co-precipitated WEOM-Fe. In co-precipitates, lower-energy aromatic and/or substituted aromatic C was spatially associated with reduced Fe(II), but higher-energy oxidized C was enriched at the oxidized Fe(III) interface. Therefore, we show that co-precipitation does not constitute a non-specific physical encapsulation of C that only affects Fe chemistry and spatial distribution, but may cause a bi-directional set of reactions that lead to spatial separation and transformation of both Fe and C forms. In particular, we propose that abiotic redox reactions between Fe and C via substituted aromatic groups (e.g., hydroquinones) play a role in creating distinct co-precipitate composition, with potential implications for its mineralization. We report the growth of thin films of the mixed valence compound YbAl3 on MgO using molecular-beam epitaxy. Employing an aluminum buffer layer, epitaxial (001) films can be grown with sub-nm surface roughness. Using x-ray diffraction, in situ low-energy electron diffraction, and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, we establish that the films are ordered in the bulk as well as at the surface. Our films show a coherence temperature of 37 K, comparable to that reported for bulk single crystals. Photoelectron spectroscopy reveals contributions from both f13 and f12 final states establishing that YbAl3 is a mixed valence compound and shows the presence of a Kondo Resonance peak near the Fermi-level. The low dielectric loss underlying the record performance of strained (SrTiO3)nSrO Ruddlesden–Popper films as tunable microwave dielectrics was postulated to arise from (SrO)2 faults accommodating local non-stoichiometric defects. Here, we explore the effect of non-stoichiometry on (SrTiO3)nSrO using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy on a composition series of 300 nm thick n = 6 (Sr1+δTiO3)nSrO thin films. These films show titanium-site vacancies across the stoichiometry series, with evidence that TiOx vacancy complexes dominate. Little change in defect populations is observed across the series, indicating the ability of Ruddlesden–Popper phases to accommodate ± 5% off-stoichiometry. Summary: The size of whole Rhodobacter sphaeroides prevents 3D visualization of centermost chromatophores in their native environment. This study combines cryo‐focused ion beam milling with cryo‐electron tomography to probe vesicle architecture both in situ and in 3D. Developing chromatophores are membrane‐bound buds that remain in topological continuity with the cytoplasmic membrane and detach into vesicles when mature. Mature chromatophores closest to the cell wall are typically isolated vesicles, whereas centermost chromatophores are either linked to neighboring chromatophores or contain smaller, budding structures. Isolated chromatophores comprised a minority of centermost chromatophores. Connections between vesicles in growing bacteria are through ~10 nm‐long, ~5 nm‐wide linkers, and are thus physical rather than functional in terms of converting photons to ATP. In cells in the stationary phase, chromatophores fuse with neighboring vesicles, lose their spherical structure, and greatly increase in volume. The fusion and morphological changes seen in older bacteria are likely a consequence of the aging process, and are not representative of connectivity in healthy R. sphaeroides. Our results suggest that chromatophores can adopt either isolated or connected morphologies within a single bacterium. Revealing the organization of chromatophore vesicles throughout the cell is an important step in understanding the photosynthetic mechanisms in R. sphaeroides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Combining multiple fast image acquisitions to mitigate scan noise and drift artifacts has proven essential for picometer precision, quantitative analysis of atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) data. For very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) image stacks – frequently required for undistorted imaging at liquid nitrogen temperatures – image registration is particularly delicate, and standard approaches may either fail, or produce subtly specious reconstructed lattice images. We present an approach which effectively registers and averages image stacks which are challenging due to their low-SNR and propensity for unit cell misalignments. Registering all possible image pairs in a multi-image stack leads to significant information surplus. In combination with a simple physical picture of stage drift, this enables identification of incorrect image registrations, and determination of the optimal image shifts from the complete set of relative shifts. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on experimental, cryogenic STEM datasets, highlighting subtle artifacts endemic to low-SNR lattice images and how they can be avoided. Magic-sized clusters (MSCs) are renowned for their identical size and closed-shell stability that inhibit conventional nanoparticle (NP) growth processes. Though MSCs have been of increasing interest, understanding the reaction pathways toward their nucleation and stabilization is an outstanding issue. In this work, we demonstrate that high concentration synthesis (1000 mM) promotes a well-defined reaction pathway to form high-purity MSCs (>99.9%). The MSCs are resistant to typical growth and dissolution processes. On the basis of insights from in situ X-ray scattering analysis, we attribute this stability to the accompanying production of a large (>100 nm grain size), hexagonal organic-inorganic mesophase that arrests growth of the MSCs and prevents NP growth. At intermediate concentrations (500 mM), the MSC mesophase forms, but is unstable, resulting in NP growth at the expense of the assemblies. These results provide an alternate explanation for the high stability of MSCs. Whereas the conventional mantra has been that the stability of MSCs derives from the precise arrangement of the inorganic structures (i.e., closed-shell atomic packing), we demonstrate that anisotropic clusters can also be stabilized by self-forming fibrous mesophase assemblies. At lower concentration (<200 mM or >16 acid-to-metal), MSCs are further destabilized and NPs formation dominates that of MSCs. Overall, the high concentration approach intensifies and showcases inherent concentration-dependent surfactant phase behavior that is not accessible in conventional (i.e., dilute) conditions. This work provides not only a robust method to synthesize, stabilize, and study identical MSC products but also uncovers an underappreciated stabilizing interaction between surfactants and clusters. A reliable method to apply biaxial strain over a wide range of values with minimal dislocation generation is critical for the study of strain dependent physical properties in oxide thin films and heterostructures. In this work, we systematically controlled the strain state in a perovskite manganite thin film by as much as 1% using a new ultrathin strain‐releasing buffer layer Sr3Al2O6, and observed signatures of accompanying magnetic and metal–insulator transitions. The near‐zero strain state is achieved within five nanometers of buffer layer thickness, substantially thinner than any oxide epitaxial buffer layers that can continuously tune the film strain states. Furthermore, the majority of misfit dislocations were confined to the Sr3Al2O6 layer, structurally decoupling defects in the film from the substrate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Incommensurate charge order in hole-doped oxides is intertwined with exotic phenomena such as colossal magnetoresistance, hightemperature superconductivity and electronic nematicity. Here, we map, at atomic resolution, the nature of incommensurate charge-lattice order in a manganite using scanning transmission electron microscopy at room temperature and cryogenic temperature (∼93 K). In diffraction, the ordering wave vector changes upon cooling, a behavior typically associated with incommensurate order. However, using real space measurements, we discover that the ordered state forms lattice-locked regions over a few wavelengths interspersed with phase defects and changing periodicity. The cations undergo picometer-scale (∼6 pm to 11 pm) transverse displacements, suggesting that charge- lattice coupling is strong. We further unearth phase inhomogeneity in the periodic lattice displacements at room temperature, and emergent phase coherence at 93 K. Such local phase variations govern the long-range correlations of the charge-ordered state and locally change the periodicity of the modulations, resulting in wave vector shifts in reciprocal space. These atomically resolved observations underscore the importance of lattice coupling and phase inhomogeneity and provide a microscopic explanation for putative "incommensurate" order in holedoped oxides. Successful strategies for stabilizing electrodeposition of reactive metals, including lithium, sodium, and aluminum are a requirement for safe, high-energy electrochemical storage technologies that utilize these metals as anodes. Unstable deposition produces high-surface area dendritic structures at the anode/electrolyte interface, which causes premature cell failure by complex physical and chemical processes that have presented formidable barriers to progress. Here, it is reported that hybrid electrolytes created by infusing conventional liquid electrolytes into nanoporous membranes provide exceptional ability to stabilize Li. Electrochemical cells based on γ-Al2O3 ceramics with pore diameters below a cut-off value above 200 nm exhibit long-term stability even at a current density of 3 mA cm−2. The effect is not limited to ceramics; similar large enhancements in stability are observed for polypropylene membranes with less monodisperse pores below 450 nm. These findings are critically assessed using theories for ion rectification and electrodeposition reactions in porous solids and show that the source of stable electrodeposition in nanoporous electrolytes is fundamental. Building on the application of cuprite (Cu2O) in solar energy technologies and reports of increased optical absorption caused by metal-to-semiconductor energy transfer, a confinement-based strategy was developed to fabricate high aspect ratio, crystalline Cu2O nanorods containing entrapped gold nanoparticles (Au nps). Cu2O was crystallized within the confines of track-etch membrane pores, where this physical, assembly based method eliminates the necessity of specific chemical interactions to achieve a well-defined metal-semiconductor interface. With high-resolution scanning/transmission electron microscopy (S/TEM) and tomography, we demonstrate the encasement of the majority of Au nps by crystalline Cu2O and show crystalline Cu2O-Au interfaces that are free of extended amorphous regions. Such nanocrystal heterostructures are good candidates for studying the transport physics of metal/semiconductor hybrids for optoelectronic applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spatial distribution of organic substrates and microscale soil heterogeneity significantly influence organic matter (OM) persistence as constraints on OM accessibility to microorganisms. However, it is unclear how changes in OM spatial heterogeneity driven by factors such as soil depth affect the relative importance of substrate spatial distribution on OM persistence. This work evaluated the decomposition and persistence of 13C and 15N labeled water-extractable OM inputs over 50 days as either hotspot (i.e., pelleted in 1–2 mm-size pieces) or distributed (i.e., added as OM < 0.07 μm suspended in water) forms in topsoil (0–0.2 m) and subsoil (0.8–0.9 m) samples of an Andisol. We observed greater persistence of added C in the subsoil with distributed OM inputs relative to hotspot OM, indicated by a 17% reduction in cumulative mineralization of the added C and a 10% higher conversion to mineral-associated OM. A lower substrate availability potentially reduced mineralization due to OM dispersion throughout the soil. NanoSIMS (nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry) analysis identified organo-mineral associations on cross-sectioned aggregate interiors in the subsoil. On the other hand, in the topsoil, we did not observe significant differences in the persistence of OM, suggesting that the large amounts of particulate OM already present in the soil outweighed the influence of added OM spatial distribution. Here, we demonstrated under laboratory conditions that the spatial distribution of fresh OM input alone significantly affected the decomposition and persistence of OM inputs in the subsoil. On the other hand, spatial distribution seems to play a lower role in topsoils rich in particulate OM. The divergence in the influence of OM spatial distribution between the top and subsoil is likely driven by differences in soil mineralogy and OM composition. Charge-density waves (CDWs) and their concomitant periodic lattice distortions (PLDs) govern the electronic properties in several layered transition-metal dichalcogenides. In particular, 1T-TaS2 undergoes a metal-to-insulator phase transition as the PLD becomes commensurate with the crystal lattice. Here we directly image PLDs of the nearly commensurate (NC) and commensurate (C) phases in thin, exfoliated 1T-TaS2 using atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy at room and cryogenic temperature. At low temperatures, we observe commensurate PLD superstructures, suggesting ordering of the CDWs both in- and out-of-plane. In addition, we discover stacking transitions in the atomic lattice that occur via one-bond-length shifts. Interestingly, the NC PLDs exist inside both the stacking domains and their boundaries. Transitions in stacking order are expected to create fractional shifts in the CDW between layers and may be another route to manipulate electronic phases in layered dichalcogenides. Epitaxially connected superlattices of self-assembled colloidal quantum dots present a promising route toward exquisite control of electronic structure through precise hierarchical structuring across multiple length scales. Here, we uncover propagation of disorder as an essential feature in these systems, which intimately connects order at the atomic, superlattice, and grain scales. Accessing theoretically predicted exotic electronic states and highly tunable minibands will therefore require detailed understanding of the subtle interplay between local and long-range structure. To that end, we developed analytical methods to quantitatively characterize the propagating disorder in terms of a real paracrystal model and directly observe the dramatic impact of angstrom scale translational disorder on structural correlations at hundreds of nanometers. Using this framework, we discover improved order accompanies increasing sample thickness and identify the substantial effect of small fractions of missing epitaxial bonds on statistical disorder. The cellular process responsible for providing energy for most life on Earth, namely, photosynthetic light-harvesting, requires the cooperation of hundreds of proteins across an organelle, involving length and time scales spanning several orders of magnitude over quantum and classical regimes. Simulation and visualization of this fundamental energy conversion process pose many unique methodological and computational challenges. We present, in two accompanying movies, light-harvesting in the photosynthetic apparatus found in purple bacteria, the so-called chromatophore. The movies are the culmination of three decades of modeling efforts, featuring the collaboration of theoretical, experimental, and computational scientists. We describe the techniques that were used to build, simulate, analyze, and visualize the structures shown in the movies, and we highlight cases where scientific needs spurred the development of new parallel algorithms that efficiently harness GPU accelerators and petascale computers. Stimuli-responsive materials have attracted great interest in catalysis, sensing, and drug delivery applications and are typically constituted by soft components. We present a one-pot synthetic method for a type of inorganic silica-based shape change material that is responsive to water vapor exposure. After the wetting treatment, the cross-sectional shape of aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with hexagonal pore lattice changed from hexagonal to six-angle-star, accompanied by the loss of periodic mesostructural order. Nitrogen sorption measurements suggested that the wetting treatment induced a shrinkage of mesopores resulting in a broad size distribution and decreased mesopore volume. Solid-state 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of samples after wetting treatment displayed a higher degree of silica condensation, indicating that the shape change was associated with the formation of more siloxane bonds within the silica matrix. On the basis of material characterization results, a mechanism for the observed anisotropic shrinkage is suggested based on a buckling deformation induced by capillary forces in the presence of a threshold amount of water vapor available beyond a humidity of about 50%. Driven by the search for faster and more efficient energy storage systems, research efforts toward electrochemical capacitors, also known as supercapacitors, have dramatically increased in recent years. Transition metal oxides have been shown to exhibit both high specific capacitance because of faradaic redox activity and long cyclic life due to their robust crystal structure. Cationic substitutions in ternary oxides have shown dramatic improvements over binary analogues, but the peak stoichiometry is often arrived at by trial and error. Transition metal oxides are also hampered by low electronic conductivity, requiring the use of conducting additives such as carbon black. In this work, we study the effect of cationic substitutions in Co3-xMnxO4 nanoparticles on electrochemical Li-ion energy storage in electrodes assembled without polymeric or conducting additives. We use a hot injection synthesis to produce colloidal Co-Mn nanoparticles with various ratios of Co/Mn. Through electrophoretic deposition (EPD), we assemble the metal nanoparticles onto current collectors and then oxidize them, forming electrochemical capacitors without carbon additives or polymeric binders ("additive-free" nanoparticle electrodes). We find that the highest-performing Co-Mn mixture has a 1:1 ratio of Co to Mn and shows an energy density of 26.6 Wh/kg with a specific capacitance of 173.6 F/g. This nanoparticle electrode composition delivers a high power density of 3.8 kW/kg at a 5 A/g constant current discharge. The energy density and power density delivered by the optimal mixture is ~6× and ~3× higher, respectively, than that of pure Co3O4 electrodes. The specific capacitance for the Co-Mn mixture is also ~4× better than the pure Co3O4 nanoparticle supercapacitor. This 1:1 composition exceeds the performance of the Mn-rich composition in energy density (~16×), power density (~12×), and specific capacitance (~20×). The optimum composition shows excellent stability with greater than 80% capacitance retention over 300 cycles. We attribute this peak-performance in the 1:1 equal mixture Co/Mn sample to an increased electronic conductivity for this stoichiometry and also find that this stoichiometry has both a high Co3+/Co2+ ratio and a high Mn3+/Mn2+ ratio, compared to other samples. This work could lead to advanced tailoring of electrochemical storage based on design principles of the interrelationship between oxidation state, stoichiometry, and redox charge storage. The layered transition metal dichalcogenides host a rich collection of charge density wave phases in which both the conduction electrons and the atomic structure display translational symmetry breaking. Manipulating these complex states by purely electronic methods has been a long-sought scientific and technological goal. Here, we show how this can be achieved in 1T-TaS2 in the 2D limit. We first demonstrate that the intrinsic properties of atomically thin flakes are preserved by encapsulation with hexagonal boron nitride in inert atmosphere. We use this facile assembly method together with transmission electron microscopy and transport measurements to probe the nature of the 2D state and show that its conductance is dominated by discommensurations. With nearly complete spin polarization, the ferromagnetic semiconductor europium monoxide could enable next-generation spintronic devices by providing efficient ohmic spin injection into silicon. Spin injection is greatly affected by the quality of the interface between the injector and silicon. Here, we use atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy in conjunction with electron energy loss spectroscopy to directly image and chemically characterize a series of EuO|Si and EuO|YAlO3 interfaces fabricated using different growth conditions. We identify the presence of europium silicides and regions of disorder at the EuO|Si interfaces, imperfections that could significantly reduce spin injection efficiencies via spin-flip scattering. The miniaturization and integration of frequency-agile microwave circuits-relevant to electronically tunable filters, antennas, resonators and phase shifters-with microelectronics offers tantalizing device possibilities, yet requires thin films whose dielectric constant at gigahertz frequencies can be tuned by applying a quasi-static electric field. Appropriate systems such as BaxSr1−xTiO3 have a paraelectric-ferroelectric transition just below ambient temperature, providing high tunability. Unfortunately, such films suffer significant losses arising from defects. Recognizing that progress is stymied by dielectric loss, we start with a system with exceptionally low loss-Srn+1TinO3n+1 phases-in which (SrO)2 crystallographic shear planes provide an alternative to the formation of point defects for accommodating non-stoichiometry. Here we report the experimental realization of a highly tunable ground state arising from the emergence of a local ferroelectric instability in biaxially strained Srn+1TinO3n+1 phases with n ≥ 3 at frequencies up to 125 GHz. In contrast to traditional methods of modifying ferroelectrics-doping or strain-in this unique system an increase in the separation between the (SrO)2 planes, which can be achieved by changing n, bolsters the local ferroelectric instability. The effect of dimensional confinement on the optical band gap of SrTiO3 is investigated by periodically introducing one extra SrO monolayer every n SrTiO3 layers. The result is the n = 1-5 and 10 members of the Srn+1TinO3n+1 Ruddlesden-Popper homologous series. Spectroscopic ellipsometry, optical transmission, and cathodoluminescence measurements reveal these Srn+1TinO3n+1 phases to have indirect optical band gaps at room temperature with values that decrease monotonically with increasing n. First-principles calculations suggest that as n increases and the TiO6 octahedra become connected for increasing distances along the c-axis, the band edge electronic states become less confined. This is responsible for the decrease in band gaps with increasing n (for finite n) among Srn+1TinO3n+1 phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transition-metal dichalcogenides containing tellurium anions show remarkable charge-lattice modulated structures and prominent interlayer character. Using cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), we map the atomic-scale structures of the high temperature (HT) and low temperature (LT) modulated phases in 1T'-TaTe2. At HT, we directly show in-plane metal distortions which form trimerized clusters and staggered, three-layer stacking. In the LT phase at 93 K, we visualize an additional trimerization of Ta sites and subtle distortions of Te sites by extracting structural information from contrast modulations in plan-view STEM data. Coupled with density functional theory calculations and image simulations, this approach opens the door for atomic-scale visualizations of low temperature phase transitions and complex displacements in a variety of layered systems. As interest in the role of extracellular vesicles in cell-to-cell communication has increased, so has the use of microscopy and analytical techniques to assess their formation, release, and morphology. In this study, we evaluate scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cryo-SEM for characterizing the formation and shedding of vesicles from human breast cell lines, parental and hyaluronan synthase 3-(HAS3)-overexpressing MCF10A cells, grown directly on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grids. While cells imaged with conventional and cryo-SEM exhibit distinct morphologies due to the sample preparation process for each technique, tubular structures protruding from the cell surfaces were observed with both approaches. For HAS3-MCF10A cells, vesicles were present along the length of membrane protrusions. Once completely shed from the cells, extracellular vesicles were characterized using nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) and cryo-TEM. The size distributions obtained by each technique were different not only in the range of vesicles analyzed, but also in the relative proportion of smaller-to-larger vesicles. These differences are attributed to the presence of biological debris in the media, which is difficult to differentiate from vesicles in NTA. Furthermore, we demonstrate that cryo-TEM can be used to distinguish between vesicles based on their respective surface structures, thereby providing a path to differentiating vesicle subpopulations and identifying their size distributions. While lithium ion batteries with electrodes based on intercalation compounds have dominated the portable energy storage market for decades, the energy density of these materials is fundamentally limited. Today, rapidly growing demand for this type of energy storage is driving research into materials that utilize alternative reaction mechanisms to enable higher energy densities. Transition metal compounds are one such class of materials, with storage enabled by "conversion" reactions, where the material is converted to new compound upon lithiation. MoS2 is one example of this type of material that has generated a large amount of interest recently due to its high theoretical lithium storage capacity compared to graphite. Here, cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques are used to reveal the atomic‐scale processes that occur during reaction of a model monolayer MoS2 system by enabling the unaltered atomic structure to be determined at various levels of lithiation. It is revealed that monolayer MoS2 can undergo a conversion reaction even with no substrate, and that the resulting particles are smaller than those that form in bulk MoS2, likely due to the more limited 2D diffusion. Additionally, while bilayer MoS2 undergoes intercalation with a corresponding phase transition before conversion, monolayer MoS2 does not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cells bend their plasma membranes into highly curved forms to interact with the local environment, but how shape generation is regulated is not fully resolved. Here, we report a synergy between shape-generating processes in the cell interior and the external organization and composition of the cell-surface glycocalyx. Mucin biopolymers and long-chain polysaccharides within the glycocalyx can generate entropic forces that favor or disfavor the projection of spherical and finger-like extensions from the cell surface. A polymer brush model of the glycocalyx successfully predicts the effects of polymer size and cell-surface density on membrane morphologies. Specific glycocalyx compositions can also induce plasma membrane instabilities to generate more exotic undulating and pearled membrane structures and drive secretion of extracellular vesicles. Stable lithium metal batteries are achieved utilizing hybrid electrolytes in which a liquid is infused into the pores of a nanoporous solid. At moderate salt concentrations, the Debye screening length is large and a selective cation transport is observed.
