The article discusses who will fill the gap in the U.S. geosciences workforce supply. According to the authors, society is linked to the resources and natural processes that occur on Earth and the dependence of humans on those resources and processes will increase as economic development continues to advance. Topics include a brief discussion about why it is important for more students to become involved in the field of geosciences, such as the ability to meet the demands of increasingly efficient technologies and techniques, and statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on the overall increase in geosciences jobs in the U.S. A history of the workforce shortage in geosciences, including its ties to the boom and bust cycles of natural resource industries, is also discussed.
