Superficial CD34 fibroblastic tumors (SCD34FT) and PRDM10‐rearranged tumors (PRTs) are mesenchymal tumors that have recently received increased scientific attention due to their irrefutable similarities yet debatable relationship. A 74‐year‐old male presented to the dermatology clinic with a violaceous, well‐defined nodule on the left medial knee of 2‐year duration. Shave biopsy demonstrated spindle cells arranged in a vaguely storiform pattern forming fascicles. Immunohistochemical stains were positive for vimentin, CD68, CD10, and CD34 diffusely. ERG, S‐100, HMB45, and SOX‐10 were negative. Molecular studies identified a mediator complex subunit 12 (MED12)‐PR/SET Domain 10 (PRDM10) gene fusion thus favoring confirming the diagnosis of a PRT. Our patient underwent wide local excision with negative margins and had no complications. The US Latino/a population disproportionately lives in poverty and experiences household food insecurity, especially households with children. The Household Food Security Survey Module (FSSM) was originally developed among rural White women. Despite wide use in English and Spanish, how well the FSSM captures the food insecurity experiences of Latino/a households is not well known. This study explored how Latino/a caregivers understood, interpreted, and perceived FSSM items and responses, and how well quantitative FSSM responses captured their reported food insecurity experiences. Trained researchers conducted in-depth cognitive interviews in a qualitative study. Interviews were conducted between October 2021 and August 2022 with Latino/a adults (N = 62) experiencing food insecurity while caring for a child (aged 18 years or younger) in the same household, and living in California, New York, or Texas. Qualitative analysis using iterative summaries for data reduction focused on item interpretation, response patterns, and cross-cutting themes. Participants generally understood FSSM items as intended. The most salient findings were themes that applied across multiple FSSM items rather than wording issues with specific items. Underreporting of food insecurity was linked to nonaffirmative ("never") responses to items referencing not having enough money for food while describing reliance on nonmonetary resources (eg, food assistance or food pantries); emotional sensitivity to discussing food insecurity, particularly as it related to children; stigma and emotions related to skipping meals; and limited response options that participants believed did not reflect their experiences. These issues influenced multiple items, impeding ease of responding and leading to inaccurate responses in English- and Spanish-language versions. Assessing coping strategies and providing more acceptable response options could enhance FSSM validity. Considering emic perspectives of Latino/a caregivers and how food access experiences differ from quantitative survey measures of food security could strengthen policy and programs. Latino children are disproportionately affected by childhood obesity. Prior research has encouraged father engagement to bolster prevention efforts and outlined general strategies for father recruitment, engagement, and retention. However, behavioral nutrition or education programs with a focus on Latino fathers are lacking, which means there is little guidance for working with Latino fathers in motivation and maintenance. This perspective highlights strategies for supporting dietary and activity behaviors with Latino fathers. Researchers can apply strategies to observational studies or program development and implementation, and practitioners can use strategies to tailor education and counseling with Latino fathers as part of obesity prevention. Systemic, structural, and social factors negatively influence nutrition for Latino/a children, and there are racial/ethnic disparities in dietary intake of fruits and vegetables (FV) and body mass index (BMI). The ¡Haz Espacio para Papi! (HEPP, Make Room for Daddy!) program was a father-focused, family-centered program to support nutrition and physical activity in Mexican-heritage families. Examine the effects of a behavioral nutrition program on dietary intake of FV and BMI for Mexican-heritage children. A modified stepped-wedge design was used to evaluate the program, which was conducted from summer 2019 through winter 2020, in five neighborhood clusters along the Texas-Mexico border. Children were 9-11 years at enrollment. Promotoras led in-person group sessions with experiential nutrition education and measurements at pre-test, post-test (6 weeks), and maintenance (3-4 months after post-test). Promotoras measured height and weight and used the Veggie Meter® to collect instant skin carotenoid scores (SCS) as a biomarker for dietary FV intake. A SAS macro calculated age- and sex-adjusted BMI. Within-person changes were calculated for SCS and BMI percentile and BMI z-score. Analyses of variance and linear mixed-effects models were used to determine differences in outcomes. The program enrolled 59 children (10 years old, 100% Mexican-heritage, 56.1% female). Children experienced decreases in SCS overall, though an increase of 16.1 ± 18.1 points was observed in one group. Children who may have had access to school meal programs did not show greater increases in SCS. Overall, children had greater reductions in BMI during the program compared to the control period and sustained reductions in BMI at maintenance. Preliminary results showed no overall effect for instant skin carotenoid score, though some groups showed a greater increase during the program versus control period. There were promising results for BMI at post-test and somewhat sustained effects at maintenance. Our findings provided evidence for strengths-based approaches in behavioral nutrition and suggest strengthening school meal programs to include carotenoid rich FV. Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is an angioproliferative vascular neoplasm characterized by the proliferation of endothelial cells that is typically seen in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). There are four major subtypes of KS: classic, African endemic, iatrogenic, and AIDS-associated KS. In rare circumstances, a patient might present with KS that does not fit into any of the four major subtypes and has no identifiable predisposing factors. This case report and review of the literature is presented to serve as a reminder to practitioners to suspect the unexpected when considering cystic or vascular-type lesions on the head and neck. Older adults (60 years+) have unique nutrition needs and circumstances. To address their individual requirements, many technological innovations are emerging to provide the necessary resources for this largely underserved population. To enhance participation in the senior nutrition programs, a multifunctional app, NUEVA, was created to optimize recruitment, assessment, nutrition intervention, and the participant experience. The development was informed with a user-centered design (UCD) framework including collaboration with community partners associated with senior nutrition programs. To complete initial or "alpha" testing of the NUEVA app with community partners. A qualitative study with focus groups was conducted in Central Texas. Focus group participants included leaders of senior nutrition programs, food banks, and food delivery volunteers serving older adults in the Central Texas area. Focus groups were conducted over Zoom and followed a semi-structured guide that covered technology usage. Additionally, a Think Aloud methodology was used to assess participants real-time feedback while navigating NUEVA. Recordings were transcribed and checked for accuracy. Analysis: Qualitative analysis included the review of summary sheets, peer debriefing, and coding to identify desired key features of NUEVA and barriers or facilitators related to usability of the app. Community partners engaged in focus groups (n=4 groups). Participants provided insights about successful technology adoption and barriers to technology usage in senior nutrition program operations. Facilitators of programmatic operations included opportunities for NUEVA to improve, such as recruitment, screening, assessment, meal selection, greater informed client outreach and increased ways to address nutrition security. Group discussions identified possibilities to enhance NUEVA for the older adults and operation use, such as technological concerns of the older adult user and staff, including data security. Findings inform the development of NUEVA, including the nutrition education and additional desired modules, before beta testing with user groups. Objective To describe how characteristics of food retail stores (potential access) and other factors influence self-reported food shopping behavior (realized food access) among low-income, rural Central Appalachian women. Design and Sample Cross-sectional descriptive. Potential access was assessed through store mapping and in-store food audits. Factors influencing consumers' realized access were assessed through in-depth interviews. Results were merged using a convergent parallel mixed methods approach. Food stores ( n = 50) and adult women ( n = 9) in a rural Central Appalachian county. Results Potential and realized food access were described across five dimensions: availability, accessibility, affordability, acceptability, and accommodation. Supermarkets had better availability of healthful foods, followed by grocery stores, dollar stores, and convenience stores. On average, participants lived within 10 miles of 3.9 supermarkets or grocery stores, and traveled 7.5 miles for major food shopping. Participants generally shopped at the closest store that met their expectations for food availability, price, service, and atmosphere. Participants' perceptions of stores diverged from each other and from in-store audit findings. Conclusions Findings from this study can help public health nurses engage with communities to make affordable, healthy foods more accessible. Physical activity among youth is shaped by the natural and built environment within which they live; however, few studies have focused on assessing playground safety and proximity in detail as part of the built environment for youth physical activity. We analyzed data on 100 publicly accessible playgrounds from Play Across St. Louis, a community-partnered study of the built environment for youth physical activity. Outcomes included overall playground safety, maintenance, and construction scores; distance to nearest playground; and distance to nearest top playground. Independent variables included neighborhood % youth, % black residents, % owner-occupied units, and % vacant units. Playgrounds in the city have varying degrees of safety and proximity. Mean overall playground safety score was 67.0 % (CI = 63.5, 70.4). Neighborhood % youth and % black residents were inversely associated with overall playground safety (p = 0.03 and p < 0.01) and maintenance (p < 0.01 and p < 0.0001). Mean distance to nearest playground was 638.1 and 1488.3 m to nearest top playground. Clusters of low safety scores were found in the northern and central areas while all high safety score clusters were found in the southern part of St. Louis. Public playground safety and proximity vary across St. Louis neighborhoods, especially by neighborhood demographics. Disparities in playground safety and proximity reveal an opportunity to develop community-wide interventions focused on playgrounds for youth activity. Infant temperament and parental feeding practices may be risk factors for childhood obesity, however most studies have relied upon parent-report assessments. We tested whether infant emotional distress and maternal restrictive feeding at 12-months of age, assessed observationally at a home feeding interaction, predicted child BMI through age 6years. We conducted a prospective observational study of 86 children (34 girls and 52 boys, from 55 adoptive and 31 non-adoptive families) enrolled in the Colorado Adoption Project. Mother-infant feeding interactions were video-recorded during a home snack or meal at year 1, and child anthropometrics (length or height, and weight) were assessed at years 1 through 6. The main outcome measures were child weight-for-length at year 1 and body mass index (BMI: kg/m(2)) at years 2-6. Results of generalized linear models indicated that greater infant emotional distress at 12-months predicted greater increases in child weight status through age 6years, B=0.62 and odds ratio (OR)=1.87. In separate analyses, restrictive feeding interacted with child sex in predicting weight status trajectories (p=.012). Male infants whose mothers displayed any compared to no restriction at year 1 showed a downward BMI trajectory from 2 to 6years; for female infants, exposure to any compared to no restriction prompts predicted increasing BMI from 4 to 6years. In sum, early obesity prevention strategies should pay greater attention to infant temperament, especially distress and negative affect, and how parents respond to such cues. Background Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common toxicity secondary to chemotherapy. Genetic factors may be important in predisposing patients to this adverse effect. Patients and methods We studied 950 primary lung cancer patients, who received platinum or platinum-combination drug chemotherapy and who had DNA available for study. We analyzed epidemiological risk factors in 279 CIPN patients and 456 non-CIPN patients and genetic risk factors in 141 CIPN patients and 259 non-CIPN patients. The risk factors studied included demographic, diagnostic, and treatment data, as well as 174 tag SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) across 43 candidate genes in the glutathione, cell cycle, DNA repair, cell signaling, and apoptosis pathways. Results Patients who had diabetes mellitus were more likely to have CIPN ( p = 0.0002). Other epidemiologic risk factors associated with CIPN included number of cycles ( p = 0.0004) and type of concurrent chemotherapy ( p < 0.001). SNPs most associated with CIPN were in glutathione peroxidase 7 (GPX7) gene ( p values 0.0015 and 0.0028, unadjusted and adjusted) and in ATP-binding cassette sub-family C member 4 (ABCC4) gene ( p values 0.037 and 0.006, unadjusted and adjusted). We also found other suggestive associations in methyl-o-guanine-methyl-transferase (MGMT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) isoforms. Conclusions Epidemiological and genetic risk factors associated with CIPN in this cohort, included the type of chemotherapy drug, intensity of chemotherapy treatment, and genes known to be associated with chemotherapy resistance. These findings suggest that differentiating between cytotoxic and neurotoxic mechanisms of chemotherapy drugs is challenging but represents an important step toward individualized therapy and improving quality of life for patients. To determine the efficacy of The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre® (THK/LCA) program to improve nutrition outcomes of low-income Texans. The THK/LCA program draws from established health promotion and nutrition education models, including the Social-Ecological Model, the Health Belief Model, and Social Cognitive Theory. Additionally, this culturally sustaining education program incorporates insights from scholars like Drs. Gloria Ladson-Billings, Django Paris, and H. Samy Alim. Central to the curriculum is the Hispanic tradition of sobremesa, emphasizing connections and information sharing around the table after a meal. THK/LCA primarily aims to serve low-income Texans facing systemic barriers to food access. THK/LCA classes are held in community spaces like libraries, health clinics, and schools, and recruitment is conducted in collaboration with community organizations. The service population is defined as individuals or families with income less than 185% of the poverty line or who live in an area designated as low-income/low-access by USDA's Food Access Research Atlas. THK/LCA is a community-engaged, peer-facilitated, interactive 6-week cooking and nutrition class series that emphasizes the selection and preparation of fresh, nutritious, and economical foods in alignment with traditional foodways. Pre-, post-, and 3-month follow-up surveys were administered to obtain information on program completion, meals provided, changes in fruit and vegetable intake, nutrition knowledge, cooking skills, and home-cooked meal preparation. Counts and percentages were determined using Tableau data analysis software. Three hundred and sixty-five Texans participated in THK/LCA classes, with 196 participants completing all 6 classes in a series. The equivalent of 4,851 meals were provided to participants. Most participants reported increases in fruit and vegetable consumption (80%), nutrition knowledge (89%), cooking skills (86%), and cooking more meals at home (80%). THK/LCA has demonstrated success in improving access to fresh and nutritious foods among low-income people living in Texas. Next steps will include an evaluation of program expansion efforts. Abstract: This study aimed to understand mothers’ everyday food choices using one type of visual method-participant-driven photo-elicitation (PDPE). The sample consisted of 12 low/moderate income mothers (26–53 years) living in Bryan/College Station, Texas. Each mother completed a photography activity, where she created photographs of her food experience, and an in-depth interview using the mother''s photographs. Interview transcripts were analyzed using a grounded theory approach and coded using qualitative data analysis software ATLAS.ti. Mothers emphasized their identities related to food and eating as they described food-related decisions and activities. These identities influenced a mother''s food choices for herself and those she made for her children. Analysis revealed that mothers with a more defined health identity made healthier choices for themselves and similar food choices for their children. In addition, they exhibited behaviors that positively influenced their children''s food choices. Mothers who struggled to see themselves as healthy indulged with more junk food and indicated feelings of anxiety and guilt; these mothers’ food choices were more disconnected from their children''s. These findings underscore the importance of understanding how identities related to food and eating can influence food choices. Encouraging mothers to develop and maintain health identities may be one way to improve food and eating habits in families. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The authors examined the associations of household food insecurity and other characteristics with fair-to-poor general health, poor physical health, and frequent mental distress among 1,367 rural and urban women in Texas. The 2006 Brazos Valley Community Health Assessment provided data on demographic characteristics, economic risk factors, health-related quality of life, household food insecurity, and geographic residence. Multivariable logistic regression models were estimated for the three health-related quality of life measures: fair-to-poor health, poor physical health, and frequent mental distress, adjusting for confounding variables. Having less than 12 years of education, not being employed full-time, and being household food insecure were independently significantly associated with increased odds for all health-related quality of life outcomes. Rural residence and being nonwhite were associated with fair-to-poor general health, but not physical or mental health. Results from the separate urban and rural models indicated that household food insecurity was associated with fair-to-poor general health among rural women, not among urban women. Poverty and being nonwhite were also associated with increased odds of reporting fair-to-poor general health, but were significant only among urban women. These results emphasize the need for health promotion and policy efforts to consider household food access and availability as part of promoting healthful food choices and good physical and mental health among women, especially rural women. Background: Individuals and families are relying more on food prepared outside the home as a source for at-home and away-from-home consumption. Restricting the estimation of fast-food access to fast-food restaurants alone may underestimate potential spatial access to fast food. Methods: The study used data from the 2006 Brazos Valley Food Environment Project (BVFEP) and the 2000 U.S. Census Summary File 3 for six rural counties in the Texas Brazos Valley region. BVFEP ground-truthed data included identification and geocoding of all fast-food restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets, and grocery stores in study area and on-site assessment of the availability and variety of fast-food lunch/dinner entrées and side dishes. Network distance was calculated from the population-weighted centroid of each census block group to all retail locations that marketed fast food (n = 205 fast-food opportunities). Results: Spatial access to fast-food opportunities (FFO) was significantly better than to traditional fast-food restaurants (FFR). The median distance to the nearest FFO was 2.7 miles, compared with 4.5 miles to the nearest FFR. Residents of high deprivation neighborhoods had better spatial access to a variety of healthier fast-food entrée and side dish options than residents of low deprivation neighborhoods. Conclusions: Our analyses revealed that identifying fast-food restaurants as the sole source of fast-food entrées and side dishes underestimated neighborhood exposure to fast food, in terms of both neighborhood proximity and coverage. Objective: The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between residential exposure to fast-food entrées, using two measures of potential spatial access: proximity (distance to the nearest location) and coverage (number of different locations), and weekly consumption of fast-food meals. Methods: Traditional fast-food restaurants and non-traditional fast-food outlets, such as convenience stores, supermarkets, and grocery stores, from the 2006 Brazos Valley Food Environment Project were linked with individual participants (n = 1409) who completed the nutrition module in the 2006 Brazos Valley Community Health Assessment. Results: Increased age, poverty, increased distance to the nearest fast food, and increased number of different traditional fast-food restaurants, non-traditional fast-food outlets, or fast-food opportunities were associated with less frequent weekly consumption of fast-food meals. The interaction of gender and proximity (distance) or coverage (number) indicated that the association of proximity to or coverage of fast-food locations on fast-food consumption was greater among women and opposite of independent effects. Conclusions: Results provide impetus for identifying and understanding the complex relationship between access to all fast-food opportunities, rather than to traditional fast-food restaurants alone, and fast-food consumption. The results indicate the importance of further examining the complex interaction of gender and distance in rural areas and particularly in fast-food consumption. Background: Many complex and subtle aspects relating to mothers and food choice are not well understood. Mothers play a primary role in their children's food choices, but research has not specifically examined how matrilineal family members who do not reside in the same household, such as a mother's mother, aunt, or grandmother, influence the current family's food choices. Methods: Seven participants were recruited from the Household Food Inventory (HFI) Study in the Bryan/College Station, Texas. All participants completed an in-depth interview, photographed food-related activities, and discussed photographs in a follow-up in-depth interview. Interviews were transcribed verbatim from audio recordings. Transcripts were analyzed using several qualitative approaches including grounded theory to identify themes and subthemes. Results: Participants discussed the following themes relating to the influence of their mother or other female relation (Mom) on their families' food choices: Relationship with Mom, Just like Mom, 'Kinda' like Mom, Different than Mom, and Mom's Influence on Children's Food Choices. Overall, participants used the photographs to illustrate how they were similar or different to their mothers, or other female family member, as well as how their mothers either supported or undermined control over their children's food choices. The "Mom effect" or matrilineal influence of mothers, aunts, and grandmothers on a mother's food choices was omnipresent, even though Mom was no longer living with the participants. Conclusions: We found a matrilineal influence to have a residual and persistent influence on a family's food choices. This finding may be helpful for understanding the contextual elements of food choice and explaining why it is sometimes difficult to change mothers' food habits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Little is known about the values immigrant groups or U.S.-born racial and ethnic minorities attribute to wilderness. However, the views of these groups are important to wilderness preservation because of increasing diversity along ethnic, cultural, and racial lines in the United States. We examine the proposition that wilderness is a social construction (valued primarily by U.S.-born Whites) by comparing wilderness values for immigrants and U.S.-born minority respondents to Whites. Results from 10 wilderness value items show immigrants are significantly less likely to indicate on-site use value. Among U.S.-born racial/ethnic groups, Black respondents were least likely to indicate values associated with visitation and off-site use but as likely as Whites to indicate a value for continued existence of wilderness. U.S.-born Asians and Latinos were also less likely than Whites to indicate values relating to wilderness on-site use. Implications of findings for wilderness as social construction are discussed. Collective memory can be used conceptually to examine African-American perceptions of wildlands and black interaction with such places. The middleAmerican view of wildlands frames these terrains as refuges—pure and simple, sanctified places distinct from the profanity of human modification. However, wild, primitive areas do not exist in the minds of all Americans as uncomplicated or uncontaminated places. Three labor-related institutions—forest labor, plantation agriculture, and sharecropping—and terrorism and lynching have impacted negatively on black perceptions of wildlands, producing an ambivalence toward such places among African Americans. We use national-level data to test a modified version of Stern, Dietz, & Guagnano's causal model of environmental belief and behavior. We focus mainly on ethnic variation in environmental belief, as measured by the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP), and ethnic variation for four environmental behaviors: environmental reading, household recycling, environmental group joining, and participation in nature-based outdoor recreation. Blacks and foreign-born Latinos were less likely than Whites to score higher on the NEP. Any behavioral differences between Whites and the respective minority groups were expected to diminish with the inclusion of the NEP as an intervening variable in the model between ethnicity and behavior. However, ethnic differences remained stable and strong even when environmental belief was added. Overall, Asian American and U.S.-born Latino environmentalism was most similar to Whites. African American concern and behavior was least similar to White environmentalism. Much of the research on environmental justice centers on environmental hazards. This article offers an overview of the emergence of environmental justice issues in outdoor recreation management and research. The authors argue that a major challenge to future research on environmental justice in outdoor recreation is clarifying definitions of environmental justice and generating awareness of the different dimensions of environmental justice. The authors also examine recent empirical studies of environmental justice issues related to outdoor recreation and other resource amenities. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T‐cell therapy has demonstrated remarkable success in treating various B‐cell malignancies, redirecting T‐cell cytotoxicity toward cancer cells. Despite its efficacy, CAR‐T therapy is associated with potential risks, including cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and cytopenia. We present a case of a 69‐year‐old man with diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma treated with axicabtagene‐ciloleucel CAR‐T therapy, who developed a rare and severe cutaneous toxicity resembling toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). The patient exhibited persistent fevers, CRS, and subsequent development of a widespread erythematous macular eruption, progressing to vesiculation with bullae. Notably, allopurinol‐induced TEN was considered with the patient's recent exposure to allopurinol, although the onset and minimal mucosal involvement did not align with typical presentations of allopurinol‐induced cases. The cutaneous reaction, distinct from typical SJS/TEN, showed minimal mucosal involvement and coincided with the cytokine release storm, differing from allopurinol‐induced TEN. Despite the absence of guidelines, the patient was managed with systemic steroids, achieving significant improvement. This case expands the spectrum of CAR‐T therapy‐related cutaneous toxicities, highlighting the need for early recognition of histopathology and tailored management by dermatologists. Executive Summary: We compare wildland activity choices for a sample of rural African Americans and Whites who visited wildland settings in and around the Apalachicola National Forest. We also look at intra-racial (same race, different gender) variations for activity participation. This research extends previous research focused on the visit/not visit wildland question by examining activity choice by race and gender for those who do visit. Our results show no racial differences for consumptive activities like fishing and hunting; however, African Americans are significantly less likely than Whites to participate in most forms of nonconsumptive activities like camping and hiking. Greater gender differences in activity participation were found for Whites than for African Americans. We discuss management implications and ways forest managers may attract more African Americans to participate in forest-based outdoor recreation. Previous studies have shown that African Americans have less favourable impressions about wildlands and recreate on wildland areas less frequently than do whites. However, most of these investigations have been conducted on non-rural populations. Rural perceptions of wildlands and visitation to such areas have received relatively little attention. In this exploratory study, we propose that race operated on wildland recreation visitation through the different meanings rural blacks and whites attribute visitation through the different meanings rural blacks and whites attribute to wildlands. We examine this hypothesis with a structural model which specifies wildland meaning as an intervening with a structural model which specifies wildland meaning as an intervening factors between race and visitation. Single equation results show blacks visit wildlands less, and have less favorable definitions of wildlands, compared to whites. However, when wildland meaning is included in the structural model, racial differences become insignificant. This suggests that the meanings different racial groups attach to wildlands help explain visitation. Both sex and age are also significant predictors of both wildland meaning and visitation. To implement and evaluate an integrated Spanish-language program to improve nutrition, increase physical activity, and strengthen family function among Mexican-heritage (MH) families. We describe research (stepped wedge cluster randomized controlled trial [SWCRCT] of father-focused, family-centered program), education (experiential learning and innovative teaching), and extension (promotora-led charlas [chats/talks]) components. The SWCRCT consists of clusters of 10-15 families receiving six in-person group sessions (three focused on father-child pairs) and at-home activities. Session include food tastings, interactive lessons, active games, hands-on food preparation, time to eat together, and goal setting. The promotora interventionists were trained using the train-the-trainer approach to gain knowledge and skills related to nutrition and food preparation, physical activity, family functioning, and motivational interviewing. The program actively involved undergraduate and graduate students from Texas A&M University, Baylor University, and Texas State University in experiential training that included material development, participant observation of promotora trainings (cooking and experiential nutrition and physical activity) and family pretesting, and motivational interviewing. Program activities and learnings were included in undergraduate and graduate courses (research methods and evaluation). In the charla program, team promotoras conducted a series of five community-based programs and activities that delivered science-based knowledge and informal educational programs to empower Mexican-heritage children and families to make sustainable healthy decisions. More than 400 participants attended charlas, which took place in community centers, churches, community organizations, and colonia neighborhoods. Data were collected for training, recruitment, process (observations and checklists), and outcome (pre- and post-program surveys, seven-day accelerometer, Veggie Meter®, and interviews/focus groups. Surveys and reflection papers from students were used. Post-charla surveys, debriefs, and a follow-up ripple effect survey (sharing of session materials) was done. This integrated family program enhances the capacity of families, students, promotoras, and community members to incorporate education and skill-building into healthier behaviors. The SWCRCT is a game changer by engaging Mexican-heritage fathers, co-parenting couples, and children and addresses a lacuna in obesity prevention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
