Transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in petrochemical wastewater (PCW) treatment has rarely been studied. In this work, low- and high-salinity PCW were collected from a treatment plant and the transformations of DOM at molecular level along the treatment processes of both PCW were comparatively investigated. By using Orbitrap MS, the polar DOM constituents were categorized into five molecular classes namely saturated compounds, aliphatics, highly unsaturated and phenolic compounds (Huph), polyphenols and condensed polycyclic aromatics (Cpla). Aliphatics (58.62%) with low molecular weight (150–250 Da) and O/C (0–0.2) were dominant in raw low-salinity PCW; while Huph (65.03%) with O/C at 0.2–0.8 were rich in raw high-salinity PCW. After full-scale treatment, differentiated DOM constituents in both raw PCWs were transformed into aliphatics and Huph with O/C at 0.3–0.5. Anoxic/Oxic treatment of low-salinity system (L-A/O) removed a high fraction of aliphatics (53.05%); while Huph with low O/C (0.1–0.3) (65.68%) in the effluent of L-A/O were further mineralized by ozonation of low-salinity system (L-ozonation). In comparison, anoxic/oxic treatment of high-salinity system (H-A/O) mainly removed unsaturated Huph (34.10%) and aliphatics (30.86%). This resulted in a decrease of dissolved organic carbon as indicated via Spearman correlation. Different from L-ozonation, ozonation of high-salinity system (H-ozonation) degraded aliphatics (26.09%) and Huph (41.85%) with a relatively high O/C (0.2–1.2). After L-A/O and L-ozonation treatments, remaining saturated compounds that were originated from raw low-salinity PCW, were removed by subsequent biological aerated filter. Comparatively, after H-A/O and H-ozonation treatments, residual Huph and aliphatics which were mainly bio-derivates and ozonated intermediates, were further removed by air flotation filter. Hence, DOM transformation of different PCWs along similar treatments varied significantly. This study provides in-depth insights on DOM transformation along a full-scale PCW treatment process. Abstract: The objective of this study was to establish a hypospadiac rat model by maternal exposure to di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and to evaluate the developmental abnormalities of hypospadiac male rats. Timed-pregnant rats were given DBP by gastric intubation at doses of 0, 250, 500, 750 or 1000mg/kg body weight (bw)/day from gestation day (GD) 14 to 18 to establish a hypospadiac rat model. The hypospadias was observerd in the 500 and 750mg/kgbw/day groups, the incidence of which was 6.8 and 41.3%, respectively. Transverse serial histological analysis of genitalia of hypospadiac male rats confirmed the malformation. With exposed dose increasing, the serum testosterone (T) levels of male rats inversely decreased, and in the same dosage group the serum T levels of hypospadiac rats were significantly lower than the levels of nonhypospadiac counterparts. The other reproductive lesions such as cryptorchidism and decreased ratio of anogenital distance/body weight (AGD/bw) were also observed. Autopsy analysis revealed the development of reproductive organs (prostate, testes, epididymis, pituitary gland) and nonreproductive organs (adrenal gland, liver, kidney, heart, spleen) of hypospadiac rats and nonhypospadiac counterparts. Pancreatic cancer is a highly lethal disease with a poor prognosis. Its early diagnosis and accurate treatment mainly rely on medical imaging, so accurate medical image analysis is especially vital for pancreatic cancer patients. However, medical image analysis of pancreatic cancer is facing challenges due to ambiguous symptoms, high misdiagnosis rates, and significant financial costs. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers a promising solution by relieving medical personnel's workload, improving clinical decision-making, and reducing patient costs. This study focuses on AI applications such as segmentation, classification, object detection, and prognosis prediction across five types of medical imaging: CT, MRI, EUS, PET, and pathological images, as well as integrating these imaging modalities to boost diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficiency. In addition, this study discusses current hot topics and future directions aimed at overcoming the challenges in AI-enabled automated pancreatic cancer diagnosis algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in point-source petrochemical wastewaters (PCWs) from different operating units is closely linked to the efficiency of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). However, systematic studies on DOM characters of point-source PCWs and their influences on WWTP influents were seldom conducted. In this study, DOM in three low-salinity point-source PCWs and four high-salinity point-source PCWs at a typical petrochemical plant were comprehensively characterized at a molecular level. Orbitrap mass spectrometry results indicated that point-source PCWs had diverse DOM constituents tightly related to the corresponding petrochemical processes. Phenols in oily wastewaters (OW), phenols and N-containing compounds in coal partial oxidation wastewater (POXW), and naphthenic acids (NAs) and aromatic acids in crude oil electric desalting unit wastewater (EDW) were characteristic DOM constituents for low-salinity point-source PCWs. While S-containing compounds (mercaptans, thiophenes) and NAs in spent caustic liquors (SCL), alcohols and esters in butanol-octanol plant wastewater (BOW), high molecular weight aromatic ketones in phenol-acetone plant wastewater (PAW), and oxygenated NAs as well as short chain N-containing compounds in concentrate from reverse osmosis unit (ROC) were characteristic DOM constituents for high-salinity point-source PCWs. Spearman correlation analysis indicated that though with relative low pollutant contents (OW) and discharge volume (EDW), N/O/S-containing compounds of OW and EDW greatly contributed to the polar DOM constituents of low-salinity influent in WWTP (R > 0.5, P < 0.001). While N-containing compounds of ROC mainly contributed to the polar DOM of high-salinity influent (R > 0.5, P < 0.001). Though N-/S-containing species in PAW had low contents, they also posed obvious impacts on DOM constituents of high-salinity influent. Interestingly, some O-/S-containing species were newly formed during the confluent process of high-salinity point-source PCWs. The results strengthened the combined contributions of pollutants contents, discharge emission and DOM constituents of point-source PCWs to the water matrix of WWTP influents, which would provide reference for the management of PCW streams. Maternal exposure to di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) has been linked to the induction of hypospadias; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Necroptosis is reported to be implicated in developmental malformations. This study aimed to investigate the underlying mechanism of necroptosis in the development of hypospadias. DBP was dissolved in corn oil, and pregnant rats were administered a precisely measured dose of DBP (750 mg/kg/day) via gastric intubation from gestation day 14–18. Control rats received only corn oil. The day of birth was considered postnatal day (PND) 1. Male hypospadias rats were identified on PND 7. Genital tubercle tissues were collected and stored at −80°C for subsequent PCR analysis, cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen for western blot, or fixed in formalin for immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining. IHC staining and western blot analysis revealed increased expression of RIPK1 and necroptosis markers in genital tubercle (GT) tissue compared to the control group. Additionally, higher levels of EMT and impaired androgen receptor expression were observed in GT tissue. Exposure to increased DBP concentrations in rat primary uroepithelial cells (PUCs) led to elevated ROS production. Necroptosis markers and EMT expression levels were upregulated in PUCs following DBP incubation. Notably, treatment with DBP combined with necrostatin-1, a necroptosis inhibitor, reduced the expression of EMT markers and ROS production compared to DBP treatment alone. In vitro studies further revealed that DBP-induced necroptosis promoted the degradation of E-cadherin through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway in PUCs. Our findings suggest that maternal exposure to DBP promotes necroptosis in uroepithelial cells by elevating ROS level and EMT status. Thus, necroptosis may play an essential role in the development of hypospadias. Prenatal exposure to dibutyl phthalate (DBP) has been reported to cause erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult offspring rats. However, its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Previously, we found that DBP activates the RhoA/ROCK pathway in the male reproductive system. This study investigated how prenatal exposure to DBP activates the RhoA/ROCK signalling pathway, leading to ED in male rat offspring. Pregnant rats were stratified into DBP-exposed and NC groups, with the exposed group receiving 750 milligrams per kilogram per day (mg/kg/day) of DBP through gavage from days 14–18 of gestation. DBP exposure activated the RhoA/ROCK pathway in the penile corpus cavernosum (CC) of descendants, causing smooth muscle cell contraction, fibrosis, and apoptosis, all of which contribute to ED. In vitro experiments confirmed that DBP induces apoptosis and RhoA/ROCK pathway activation in CC smooth muscle cells. Treatment of DBP-exposed offspring with the ROCK inhibitor Y-27632 for 8 weeks significantly improved smooth muscle cell condition, erectile function, and reduced fibrosis. Thus, prenatal DBP exposure induces ED in offspring through RhoA/ROCK pathway activation, and the ROCK inhibitor Y-27632 shows potential as an effective treatment for DBP-induced ED. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles in diverse biological processes, such as transcriptional regulation, cell growth and tumorigenesis. However, little is known about whether lncRNA-GAS5 (growth arrest-specific 5) regulates bladder cancer progression. In the present study, we found that the GAS5 expression is commonly downregulated in bladder cancer cell lines and human specimens. Knockdown of GAS5 promotes bladder cancer cell proliferation, whereas forced expression of GAS5 suppresses cell proliferation. We further demonstrated that knockdown of GAS5 increases CDK6 mRNA and protein levels in bladder cancer cells. Expectedly, GAS5 inhibition induces a significant decrease in G0/G1 phase and an obvious increase in S phase. Gain-of-function and loss-of-function studies showed that GAS5 inhibits bladder cancer cell proliferation, at least in part, by regulating CDK6 expression. Conclusions: Downregulated GAS5 promotes bladder cancer cell proliferation, partly by regulating CDK6, and thus may be helpful in the development of effective treatment strategies against bladder cancer. Objective: To present our surgical approach and initial experience of laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) with sequential precise tumor-specific segmental renal artery clamping in patients with multiple ipsilateral renal tumors.Materials and Methods: Six patients with multiple ipsilateral renal tumors having imperative indications for nephron-sparing surgery underwent LPN with sequential precise tumor-specific segmental renal artery clamping from May 2012 to September 2015. Patient demographics, perioperative variables, renal functions, and postoperative outcomes were reviewed.Results: Overall 15 tumors in 6 patients underwent the sequential precise tumor-specific segmental renal artery clamping LPN without conversion to conventional main renal artery clamping, open surgery, or radical nephrectomy. No severe complication occurred. Mean size of the tumors was 2.5 cm (range 1.8-3.5). Mean tumor-related warm ischemia time was 17 min (range 13-22). The affected kidney functions minimally decreased at recent follow-up and restored 3 months later. No positive tumor margin or extrarenal invasion breakthrough renal capsule was observed after pathologic analysis. Over 12 months' follow-up, no local recurrence and distant metastasis were discovered in these cases postoperatively.Conclusion: LPN with sequential precise tumor-specific segmental renal artery clamping is a feasible approach for multiple ipsilateral renal tumors. This paper aims at the visible light imaging detection of complex space targets (satellites) at close range, utilizes the pixel method based on OpenGL and 3ds target model, studies the basic space-based optical imaging process, which includes the link elements such as space environment, solar radiation, target, optical receiver system, image detector and relative motion and so on. By using the pixel method and Bi-directional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF), this paper models the target's scattering of solar radiation and analyzes the energy response characteristics, the spatial frequency transfer characteristics and the noise mathematic model of each link. At last this paper introduces the complex target's space-based optical imaging simulation method based on 3D programming tool OpenGL and 3ds target models, and gives some examples of simulated images. Purpose: To compare the safety and efficiency of thulium laser resection of the prostate-tangerine technique (TmLRP-TT) and plasmakinetic resection of the prostate (PKRP) for aged symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients with large volume prostates (>80 ml) in a prospective randomized trial with an 18-month follow-up. Materials and methods: From January 2010 to November 2011, 90 BPH patients with large volume prostates were randomized for surgical treatment with TmLRP-TT ( n = 45, group 1) or PKRP ( n = 45, group 2). The preoperative and postoperative parameters were recorded and compared. All patients were evaluated at 1, 6, 12 and 18 months postoperatively using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), quality of life score (QoL), maximum flow rate ( Q), postvoid residual urine volume (PVR) and the five-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function score. All perioperative complications were also documented and classified according to the modified Clavien classification system. Results: Compared with the PKRP group, the TmLRP-TT group had a statistically lower hemoglobin drop (0.86 ± 0.42 vs. 1.34 ± 1.04 g/dl, P < 0.01), shorter catheterization time (1.91 ± 0.85 vs. 2.36 ± 0.74 days, P < 0.01) and hospital stay (3.80 ± 0.46 vs. 5.02 ± 0.54 days, P < 0.01). Within the observation period of 18 months, both groups had significant postoperative improvement in IPSS, QoL, Q and PVR, although no difference was observed between the two groups. Only one patient receiving PKRP treatment required a blood transfusion perioperatively. During the 18-month follow-up, one patient in each group experienced urethral stricture and one patient in the PKRP group experienced bladder neck contracture. Minor complications that required no or noninterventional treatment occurred in 6 (13.33 %) of TmLRP-TT group (Clavien grade 1, 13.33 % and grade 2, 0 %) and 10 (22.22 %) of PKRP group (Clavien grade 1, 20.00 % and grade 2, 2.22 %). No severe complications required reinterventions in both groups (Clavien grade 3, 0 %; grade 4, 0 %; grade 5, 0 %). Conclusions: Both TmLRP-TT and PKRP are safe and effective treatment options for large prostates that require resection. Taking into account less blood loss, shorter catheterization time and hospital stay, TmLRP-TT may be a better treatment for patients with large prostates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Androgen receptor (AR) has been indicated to be involved in bladder cancer progression. We showed androgen induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in AR-positive bladder cancer cells and promoted tumor metastasis in xenograft models. We subsequently identified that Slug was the mediator of EMT induced by androgen. Furthermore, upregulation of Slug was due to activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling in response to androgen. Finally, expression of AR showed strong correlation with loss of E-cadherin, higher expression of Slug and nuclear accumulation of β-catenin in bladder tumor tissues. Taken together, our results suggest AR signaling promotes bladder cancer metastasis through Slug mediated EMT. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is an endocrine disruptor, which causes male reproductive dysfunction in rodents. Previous researches demonstrated that DBP exposure impaired spermatogenesis, however, the molecular mechanism is largely uncovered. In this study, we demonstrated that prenatal exposure to DBP increased receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) expression in seminiferous tubules, especially in Sertoli cells. Western blot and immunofluorescence assays showed that DBP induced up-regulation of RANKL expression in Sertoli cells. Furthermore, experimental data showed that DBP increased COX-2 and p-p65 expression in Sertoli cells and depleting COX-2 and p-p65 by specific inhibitor NS3–98 and BAY117082 could partially abolish DBP induced up-regulation of RANKL. Moreover, the content of RANKL in Sertoli cells was significantly increased after DBP exposure by conducting enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), which promoted spermatogonial stem cells (C18–4 cells) apoptosis in a paracrine manner. Together, our data demonstrated that a novel mechanism for DBP induced impairment of spermatogenesis by activating NF-κB/COX-2/RANKL signaling in Sertoli cells, and provided a diagnostic and therapeutic target. • Sertoli cells were a target of DBP in testis. • The NF-κB/COX-2 signaling pathway was activated by DBP in Sertoli cells. • DBP induced the expression of RANKL in vivo and in vitro. • There was a crosstalk between Sertoli cells and spermatogonial stem cells. • RANKL secreted by Sertoli cells resulted in the apoptosis of spermatogonial stem cells. The fatigue life of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons was studied in this paper. A new wedge-type anchorage system was applied to the fatigue test of CFRP tendons and demonstrated an excellent fatigue resistance. In the test and analytical data, the fatigue stress ranged from 200 MPa to 800 MPa, and maximum stresses from 0.37 to 1.0 f u ( f u = ultimate tensile strength of CFRP tendons) were determined. The main work and results were that the stress range and stress level (maximum stress) were two key parameters affecting the fatigue life of CFRP tendons. A bilinear equation and a linear equation considering the fatigue life of CFRP tendons jointly affected by the stress range and the maximum stress were established. The error of predicted results and test results was 0.038 and 0.083, respectively, both representing good prediction accuracy. The predicted results of Whitney's method showed that, at a 95% confidence level, when the stress range was 200 MPa, 400 MPa, and 600 MPa, the maximum stress limit of CFRP tendons, which were not broken in a fatigue test of 2 million times, was 63.9% f u , 53.0% f u , and 36.8% f u , respectively.
