There is strong evidence of the impact of opinion leaders in health promotion programs. Early work by Burke-Garcia suggests that social media influencers are the opinion leaders of the digital age as they come from the communities they influence, have built trust with them, and may be useful in combating misinformation by disseminating credible and timely health information and prompting consideration of health behaviors. AI has contributed to the spread of misinformation, but it can also be a vital part of the solution, informing and educating in real time and at scale. Personalized, empathetic messaging is crucial, though, and research supports that individuals are drawn to empathetic AI responses and prefer them to human responses in some digital environments. This mimics what we know about influencers and how they approach communicating with their followers. Blending what we know about social media influencers as opinion leaders with the power and scale of AI can enable us to address the spread of misinformation. This paper reviews the knowledge base and proposes the development of something we term "Health Communication AI" – perhaps the newest form of opinion leader – to fight health misinformation. When an observer looks at a curved mirror, they may sense that a nonlinear map is at work. Here we consider the problem of finding the mirror that realizes a given map. The natural language for such problems is that of planar distributions, and one tool for testing for the existence of solutions is the Frobenius theorem. For situations where exact solutions do not exist, we describe an approximation method that can give good results for applications. Purpose: The goal of this guideline/procedure standard is to assist nuclear medicine physicians, other nuclear medicine professionals, oncologists or other medical specialists for recommended use of [18F]FDG PET/CT in oncological patients undergoing immunotherapy, with special focus on response assessment in solid tumors. Methods: In a cooperative effort between the EANM, the SNMMI and the ANZSNM, clinical indications, recommended imaging procedures and reporting standards have been agreed upon and summarized in this joint guideline/procedure standard. Conclusions: The field of immuno-oncology is rapidly evolving, and this guideline/procedure standard should not be seen as definitive, but rather as a guidance document standardizing the use and interpretation of [18F]FDG PET/CT during immunotherapy. Local variations to this guideline should be taken into consideration. Preamble: The European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) is a professional non-profit medical association founded in 1985 to facilitate worldwide communication among individuals pursuing clinical and academic excellence in nuclear medicine. The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) is an international scientific and professional organization founded in 1954 to promote science, technology and practical application of nuclear medicine. The Australian and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine (ANZSNM), founded in 1969, represents the major professional society fostering the technical and professional development of nuclear medicine practice across Australia and New Zealand. It promotes excellence in the nuclear medicine profession through education, research and a commitment to the highest professional standards. EANM, SNMMI and ANZSNM members are physicians, technologists, physicists and scientists specialized in the research and clinical practice of nuclear medicine. All three societies will periodically put forth new standards/guidelines for nuclear medicine practice to help advance the science of nuclear medicine and improve service to patients. Existing standards/guidelines will be reviewed for revision or renewal, as appropriate, on their fifth anniversary or sooner, if indicated. Each standard/guideline, representing a policy statement by the EANM/SNMMI/ANZSNM, has undergone a thorough consensus process, entailing extensive review. These societies recognize that the safe and effective use of diagnostic nuclear medicine imaging requires particular training and skills, as described in each document. These standards/guidelines are educational tools designed to assist practitioners in providing appropriate and effective nuclear medicine care for patients. These guidelines are consensus documents based on current knowledge. They are not intended to be inflexible rules or requirements of practice, nor should they be used to establish a legal standard of care. For these reasons and those set forth below, the EANM, SNMMI and ANZSNM caution against the use of these standards/guidelines in litigation in which the clinical decisions of a practitioner are called into question. The ultimate judgment regarding the propriety of any specific procedure or course of action must be made by medical professionals considering the unique circumstances of each case. Thus, there is no implication that an action differing from what is laid out in the guidelines/procedure standards, standing alone, is below standard of care. To the contrary, a conscientious practitioner may responsibly adopt a course of action different from that set forth in the standards/guidelines when, in the reasonable judgment of the practitioner, such course of action is indicated by the condition of the patient, limitations of available resources or advances in knowledge or technology subsequent to publication of the guidelines/procedure standards. The practice of medicine involves not only the science, but also the art of dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, alleviation and treatment of disease. The variety and complexity of human conditions make it impossible for general guidelines to consistently allow for an accurate diagnosis to be reached or a particular treatment response to be predicted. Therefore, it should be recognized that adherence to these standards/ guidelines will not ensure a successful outcome. All that should be expected is that practitioners follow a reasonable course of action, based on their level of training, current knowledge, clinical practice guidelines, available resources and the needs/context of the patient being treated. The sole purpose of these guidelines is to assist practitioners in achieving this objective. The present guideline/procedure standard was developed collaboratively by the EANM, the SNMMI and the ANZSNM, with the support of international experts in the field. They summarize also the views of the Oncology and Theranostics and the Inflammation and Infection Committees of the EANM, as well as the procedure standards committee of the SNMMI, and reflect recommendations for which the EANM and SNMMI cannot be held responsible. Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectra of a novel series of neutral α, ω-bis(mesitylthio)oligothiophenes and some α,ω-bis(mesitylthio)oligothiophenes containing ethylenedioxy groups at the β positions, with various chain lengths have been investigated. Because these compounds contain carbon-sulfur linkages they can be viewed as models for prototypical surface-bound molecular wires in which the oligomer is linked to the surface by a thiol-metal bond. Thus, interactions between the conjugated moiety and the metallic surface or cluster can be simulated. These studies are very important in order to apply molecular systems in micro and optoelectronic devices. The statements of effective conjugation coordinate theory and density functional theory calculations let us describe the specific electronic interactions between the mesitylthio groups and the oligothiophene backbone. An increased π-electron delocalization or conjugation length with respect to the α,ω-bis(alkyl)oligothiophenes of the same length has been noticed. The inclusion of C-S bridges between the end groups and the central π-conjugated backbone increases the π-electron delocalization within the oligomeric chain and precludes the oligothiophene moiety from conjugative interactions with the mesityl rings. We investigate the qualitative aspects of the simultaneous multiple surface (SMS) design method. The SMS method is a powerful and complex tool, whose abilities and limitations we feel are not yet fully understood. Here, we view the SMS method as an iterative dynamical system, consider the physical boundaries on which the method applies and show that in some cases, attractors occur on the boundaries of these regions. One consequence of our viewpoint is numerical evidence of the impossibility of perfectly imaging three points to three points using only two reflectors. Another consequence is that SMS may be viewed as a means for designing a primary component that essentially separates the bundles in such a way that a continuous secondary component exists that images the two separate bundles appropriately. Supplementation of vitamin E has indications for improving cattle health, performance, and retail characteristics when included in grain-based diets. This experiment was conducted to determine performance and carcass characteristics of steers fed diets containing wet distillers grains with solubles (WDGS) and supplemented with vitamin E. Steers of mixed Bos indicus and Bos taurus breeding (n = 199; BW = 363 ± 32 kg) were blocked by BW and assigned to 1 of 4 supplemental vitamin E (VITE) treatments [0 (control), 125, 250, and 500 IU·steer-1·d-1], which were fed for the last 97 d of the feeding period. Two blocks were on feed 129 d, and 3 blocks were fed for 150 d. Steers were fed a dry-rolled corn-based finishing diet with 35% WDGS (DM basis). Individual BW were measured initially, the initial day of vitamin E supplementation, and the day of slaughter. Carcass weights were collected at slaughter, and carcass data were collected after a 36-h chill. Body weight and ADG were not affected by VITE (P ⩾ 0.34). There was a tendency for a linear (P = 0.08) increase in carcass-adjusted BW with increasing VITE. Use of carcass-adjusted final BW resulted in a linear increase (P = 0.04) in ADG with increasing VITE. Pre-vitamin E and vitamin E feeding period DMI were not affected (P ⩾ 0.24) by VITE, but there was a tendency (P = 0.08) for a linear increase in overall DMI with increasing VITE. No difference (P ⩾ 0.29) occurred in G:F measures using BW gains, but G:F using carcass-adjusted BW gains resulted in a trend (P = 0.11) for G:F to increase linearly with increasing VITE. Hot carcass weights tended (P = 0.08) to increase linearly with increasing dietary vitamin E. Vitamin E supplementation resulted in no effects (P ⩾ 0.13) on measured carcass characteristics. Calculated yield grades (YG) were also not affected (P ⩾ 0.37). However, the distribution of calculated YG resulted in a quadratic effect (P = 0.02) for YG 3 with the control and 500 VITE being greater than the 2 intermediate amounts. However, the percentage of carcasses grading YG 3 or less were not affected by vitamin E supplementation (P = 0.64). No differences were observed in the distribution of quality grades based on marbling scores (P ⩾ 0.57). Data from this study suggest that vitamin E supplemented above basal requirements during the last 97 d of the feeding period in finishing diets containing 35% WDGS results in slight to no effect on animal performance or carcass characteristics. Optimal delivery of intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy is dependent on adequate drug distribution. An accurate understanding of the limitations of IP distribution is critical if we are to improve cytotoxic delivery through this route. Using repeated scintigraphic peritoneography we investigated peritoneal fluid distribution in patients receiving IP therapy. Both early (1-6 h) and late (24-48 h) images were performed. The peritoneal cavity was divided into six regions; pouch of Douglas, left and right paracolic gutters, left and right subphrenic spaces and the right subhepatic space. The distribution in each region was classified as absent (0), faint (1) or intense (2). A total distribution score was calculated from the summation of distribution values for each of the six regions. Distribution was then graded according to the total distribution score as follows: Grade 0 = 0-3; Grade 1 = 4-6; Grade 2 = 7-9; and Grade 3 = 10-12. Twenty-six participants were included in the study: all 26 patients had early imaging performed and 21 of these also had late imaging. Thirteen (50%) and 15 (71%) patients had grade 1 or 2 IP distribution on early and late imaging respectively. The most common abdominal regions to show maldistribution were the subphrenic spaces. This study highlights the deficiencies of distribution following IP drug delivery, with the majority of patients demonstrating multiple regions of faint or absent uptake on scintigraphic peritoneography imaging. Future large clinical studies investigating IP chemotherapy should include analyses of IP distribution to improve our understanding of optimal drug delivery through this route. The objective of this study was to determine how alternative on-site wastewater treatment systems (i.e. subsurface flow constructed wetlands, intermittent sand filters and intermittent peat filters) affect the viability and culturability of Salmonella choleraesuis (serotype typhimurium, ATCC 23567). Influent was a high strength septic tank effluent (BOD5 240-344mgL-1, TN ∼ 100 mgL-1, TP ∼ 15mgL-1) at the Natural Resources Research Institute's (NRRI) alternative treatment system test facility in northern Minnesota. Treatment systems were inoculated with cultures of S. choleraesuis for 5-7 consecutive days in summer and winter during 1998-99. After the seeding, outflow samples were taken until Salmonella counts were sustained at background levels. In addition to culture-based enumeration, S. choleraesuis abundances were also measured using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) alone and in combination with the direct viable count method (DVC) to determine if plate counts underestimated total and viable Salmonella abundances and if the Salmonella cell viability changed after passing through the treatment systems. In most cases, total and viable cell abundances in treatment system effluents were several orders of magnitude higher than cultured cell abundances. Our results indicate that the culture-based method underestimated viable concentrations of the model pathogen, £ choleraesuis. Salmonella cell viability decreased in effluents during the summer but increased during the winter. Using a culture-based enumeration method alone to determine removal efficiencies of bacterial indicators and pathogens for wastewater treatment systems may result in artificially high estimates of effective treatment. The prognostic significance of extracranial distant metastasis detected by positron emission tomography (PET) was investigated in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Forty-two patients staged with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-PET-detected distant metastasis before planned surgery (n = 7) or radical radiotherapy (RT)/chemoradiotherapy (n = 35) for NSCLC were identified from a prospective database. The influence of metastasis number and other prognostic factors was investigated using Cox's regression analysis. Treatment after PET included surgery (n = 2), radical RT (n = 5), palliative RT (n = 25), chemotherapy (n = 8) or supportive care (n = 2). All but 4 patients had died by the last follow-up. Median survival was 9 months overall, 12 months for 27 patients with single PET-detected metastasis and 5 months for 15 patients with > 1 metastasis (p = 0.009). It was found that the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (p = 0.027) but not pre-PET stage, weight loss or metastasis site correlated with survival. PET-detected metastatic tumor burden appeared to influence survival and should be evaluated as a prognostic factor in NSCLC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of potential clinical risk factors in the causation of peri-operative stroke associated with carotid endarterectomy. With the change in carotid endarterectomy practice from the use of a shunt to high-dose thiopental for cerebral protection (a previously undocumented method), it was essential to identify accurately the causes of all peri-operative strokes. Methods: A prospective audit was undertaken of 1000 carotid endarterectomies in which the causes and pathology of all peri-operative strokes were documented. The roles of advanced age, female gender, hypertension, previous stroke, contralateral carotid stenosis > 70%, and contralateral carotid occlusion as potential causes of peri-operative stroke were defined. Results were statistically analysed using odds ratio and Fisher’s exact test. Results: None of the potential risk factors was statistically significant for peri-operative stroke. Female gender was associated with a significant risk of peri-operative stroke due to operative site thrombosis. Complications at the endarterectomy site were the commonest cause of stroke. Conclusions: Prospective audit is a useful tool for identifying causes of peri-operative stroke and indicating the need for modifications to surgical clinical management which might improve outcomes for carotid endarterectomy. Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) were isolated from clones of Buddleia davidii collected at Long Ashton Research Station for assessment of horticultural characteristics. The AMV isolate investigated in this study (AMV-B) infected 18 species and cultivars of herbaceous test plants. The m vilto properties of AMV-B were determined. The virus was purified by permeation chromatography on controlled-pore glass beads and an antiserum prepared. AMV-B appeared to be serologically indistinguishable from AMV isolate 15/64. The sizes and shapes of the virus particles were those of classical AMV components. The capsid protein was a single polypepticle of Mr 24 375. Buddleia seedlings inoculated with AMV-B showed only mild chlorosis and slight distortion of leaves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on study on the isolation of a tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) from rose. The isolation of a TMV from a rose with flower-break symptoms and, moreover, the development of a color break in infected petunia flowers suggested that this virus might be responsible for the symptoms in rose. Leaves from these plants were assayed on C amaranticolor after 8 weeks, but virus was only detected in leaves inoculated with partially-purified virus. No symptoms of flower break have been observed on any of these roses in the subsequent 9 years. Extracts of petals and leaves from eight different cultivars with these symptoms were partially-purified and assayed on C amaranticolor. Viruses were detected in two of the plants, but were identified as arabis mosaic virus and a mixture of arabis mosaic and strawberry latent ringspot viruses.

The effectiveness of antigen aerosol-induced desensitization has been investigated in guinea-pigs actively sensitized with antigen, alone or incorporated in Freund's adjuvants. Rates of desensitization, and the ability of animals to regain anaphylactic hypersensitivity following intensive desensitization, have been considered in terms of relative rates of antibody production, levels of circulating antibody, and qualitative differences in the antibody produced. A protective component observed during desensitization in adjuvant-treated animals is considered to be a property both of high levels of circulating antibody and of the presence of certain non-specific factors which interfere with the sensitization process. Anaphylactic hypersensitivity of isolated guinea-pig ileum preparations has been evaluated by investigation of antigen-dose/response relationships, in vitro. The influence of Freund's adjuvants on active sensitization has been investigated. In contrast to the inhibitory influence previously observed in vivo, the degree of hypersensitivity of isolated tissues in vitro was potentiated by the adjuvants. It is thought that high circulating titres of antibody in vivo exerted a protective or neutralizing effect in relation to challenging doses of antigen. Isolated tissues were freed from this influence. Tissues sensitized with the aid of Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) revealed the influence of other inhibitory mechanisms, due probably to interaction of various antibody types. Background: Hypertonic saline (HTS) is essential pharmacologic treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI). Previous studies associate HTS with acute kidney injury (AKI), however evidence in TBIs is limited. Objective: This study examines factors associated with AKI in patients requiring HTS for TBI. Methods: This retrospective study was performed at a Level-1 Trauma, Academic Medical Center. Inclusion criteria were TBI, age ≥12 years, ICU length of stay ≥72 hours, and administration of ≥24 hours of continuous HTS or 500 mL of HTS boluses. The primary outcome was identifying factors associated with AKI. Secondary outcomes included correlation between chloride load and level with development of AKI. Chloride load was calculated from HTS and non-HTS sources. Results: Of 129 patients included, 18 (14%) developed AKI. Maximum sodium level was higher in the AKI group (P < 0.0001). Hyperchloremia (Cl ≥ 115 mEq/L) was more common in the AKI group (100% vs 81%, P = 0.0428). Maximum and change in serum chloride were higher in the AKI group (median 128 vs 123 mEq/L, P = 0.0026 and +24 mEq/L vs +17 mEq/L, P = 0.0084, respectively). Logistic regression analysis indicated an OR 1.095 times higher [95% CI (1.022, 1.172)] for developing AKI for every one mEq/L increase in maximum chloride level and an OR 1.032 [95% CI (1.006, 1.058)] for developing AKI for every 1-year increase in age. There was no difference in total chloride load between groups (P = 0.2143). Non-HTS sources provided more than 40% of total chloride load in both groups. Passiflora latent carlavirus (PLV) was detected by PAS-ELLSA in 15 species/hybrids or cultivars of Passiflora with mosaic, mottle or blotch leaf symptoms, from botanical and germplasm collections in the UK and The Netherlands surveyed in 1992 and 1993. A single lesion isolate of PLV induced leaf chlorosis in inoculated apparently virus-free P. caerulea. This is the first report of PLV in the UK. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Employment holds many benefits for people living with psychosis. However, significant barriers to employment for this cohort appear to exist, notably stigma and discrimination against people living with serious mental health conditions. We asked: Would a qualitative sample including multiple stakeholder groups reveal similar results and if so, what would be the main impacts of such stigma and discrimination? Method: This analysis used data from a qualitative study that had employed focus groups and interviews to investigate the employment barriers and support needs of people living with psychosis, including views of the multiple stakeholders (those living with mental health conditions, health professionals, care-givers, employments consultants and community members and employers). Results: The impacts of workplace stigma and discrimination on people living with psychosis included work avoidance, reluctance to disclose mental health conditions to employers, work-related stress, and reduced longevity of employment. Conclusions: Significant impacts from such stigma and discrimination were found in this study. The findings indicate a need to provide support mechanisms and to change the culture of workplaces to improve employment opportunities and outcomes for people living with psychosis. A capacitively coupled, atmospheric pressure plasma has been developed that produces a high concentration of reactive species at a gas temperature below 300 °C. The concentration of ground-state oxygen atoms produced by the discharge was measured by NO titration, and found to equal 1.2 vol %, or 1.2±0.4×1017 cm-3, using 6.0 vol % O2 in argon at 150 W/cm3. The ozone concentration determined at the same conditions was 4.3±0.5×1014 cm-3. A model of the gas phase reactions was developed and yielded O atom and O3 concentrations in agreement with experiment. This plasma source etched Kapton® at 5.0 μm/s at 280 °C and an electrode-to-sample spacing of 1.5 cm. This fast etch rate is attributed to the high O atom flux generated by the plasma source. Gallium phosphide(001) surfaces have been prepared by metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy, and characterized in situ by low-energy electron diffraction, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and reflectance difference spectroscopy. Three stable phases were observed: (2×1), (1×1), and (2×4) with phosphorus coverages of 1.00, 0.67, and 0.13 ML, respectively. Reflectance difference spectra obtained at coverages intermediate between these three values were found to be linear combinations of the spectra of the pure phases. In particular, ΔR/R[sub (mixed)]=mΔR/R[sub (1×1)]+(1-m)ΔR/R[sub (2×1) or (2×4)], where m is a weighting factor. The weighting factors were used to estimate the phosphorus coverage, and these results agreed to within 5.0% of the values measured by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy (PRRT) delivers targeted radiation to Somatostatin Receptor (SSR) expressing Neuroendocrine Neoplasms (NEN). We sought to assess the predictive and prognostic implications of tumour dosimetry with respect to response by 68 Ga DOTATATE (GaTate) PET/CT molecular imaging tumour volume of SSR (MITVSSR) change and RECIST 1.1, and overall survival (OS). Methods: Patients with gastro-entero-pancreatic (GEP) NEN who received LuTate followed by quantitative SPECT/CT (Q-SPECT/CT) the next day (Jul 2010 to Jan 2019) were retrospectively reviewed. Single time-point (STP) lesional dosimetry was performed for each cycle using population-based pharmacokinetic modelling. MITVSSR and RECIST 1.1 were measured at 3-months post PRRT. Results: Median of 4 PRRT cycles were administered to 90 patients (range 2–5 cycles; mean 27.4 GBq cumulative activity; mean 7.6 GBq per cycle). 68% received at least one cycle with radiosensitising chemotherapy (RSC). RECIST 1.1 partial response was 24%, with 70% stable and 7% progressive disease. Cycle 1 radiation dose in measurable lesions was associated with local response (odds ratio 1.5 per 50 Gy [95% CI: 1.1–2.0], p = 0.002) when adjusted by tumour grade and RSC. Median change in MITVSSR was -63% (interquartile range -84 to -29), with no correlation with radiation dose to the most avid lesion on univariable or multivariant analyses (5.6 per 10 Gy [95% CI: -1.6, 12.8], p = 0.133). OS at 5-years was 68% (95% CI: 56–78%). Neither baseline MITVSSR (hazard ratio 1.1 [95% CI: 1.0, 1.2], p = 0.128) nor change in baseline MITVSSR (hazard ratio 1.0 [95% CI: 1.0, 1.1], p = 0.223) were associated with OS when adjusted by tumour grade and RSC but RSC was (95% CI: 0.2, 0.8, p = 0.012). Conclusion: Radiation dose to tumour during PRRT was predictive of radiologic response but not survival. Survival outcomes may relate to other biological factors. A level 1 pediatric trauma registry database was examined for all non-accidental trauma (NAT) emergency department visits between 2016 and 2021, and average injury severity score assigned to those patients with physical injuries over 2019-2021. There was a decline in NAT visits in 2020 (267) from prior years (343 visits average over 2016-2019), with subsequent increase in 2021 (548). Injury severity score increased (ISS) in 2020 (7.3) when compared to 2019 (5.71), with a decline in average ISS in 2021 (5.42). This data highlights the potential for missed abuse during closures with increased detection following reopening. Our data regarding ISS demonstrates the pediatric population is at risk of more severe abuse during times of familial stress. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effect of PET on the management of primary tumours of the thymus. Patients with a primary tumour of the thymus who underwent PET were identified from a prospective database. Forty-three PET scans were carried out on 26 patients with primary thymic tumours. Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were 79, 100 and 85%, respectively. Conventional imaging and PET findings were discordant in 10 cases (23%). PET appropriately changed patient management in three (7.0%) cases based on accurate results that differed from pre-PET imaging. Most PET scans carried out (88%) did not influence clinical management. Patient comorbidities, limited treatment options and already planned surgery are factors that may hinder the effect of PET in the setting of thymic tumours. The potential for false-negative results, probably because of a combination of low-fluorodeoxyglucose avidity and small volume residual disease, needs to be considered in management planning. The aim of this study was to define the recommended dose of oxaliplatin when combined with infusional 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and concurrent pelvic radiotherapy. Eligible patients had inoperable rectal cancer, or symptomatic primary rectal cancer with metastasis. Oxaliplatin was given on day 1 of weeks 1, 3 and 5 of radiotherapy. Dose level 1 was oxaliplatin 70 mg m(-2) with 5-FU 200 mg m(-2) day(-1) continuous infusion 96 h week(-1). On dose level 2, the oxaliplatin dose was increased to 85 mg m(-2). On dose level 3, the duration of the 5-FU was increased to 168 h per week. Pelvic radiotherapy was 45 Gray (Gy) in 25 fractions over 5 weeks with a boost of 5.4 Gy. Fluorine-18 fluoro deoxyglucose and Fluorine-18 fluoro misonidazole positron emission tomography (FDG-PET and FMISO-PET) were used to assess metabolic tumour response and hypoxia. In all, 16 patients were accrued. Dose-limiting toxicities occurred in one patient at level 2 (grade 3 chest infection), and two patients at level 3 (grade 3 diarrhoea). Dose level 2 was declared the recommended dose level. FDG-PET imaging showed metabolic responses in 11 of the 12 primary tumours assessed. Four of six tumours had detectable hypoxia on FMISO-PET scans. The addition of oxaliplatin to infusional 5-FU chemoradiotherapy was feasible and generally well tolerated. For future trials, oxaliplatin 85 mg m(-2) and 5-FU 200 mg m(-2) day(-1) continuous infusion 96 h week(-1) is the recommended dose when combined with 50.4 Gy of pelvic radiotherapy. Phylogenetic analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA genes revealed the presence of archaea in picoplankton collected from the Laurentian Great Lakes in North America, Africa’s Lake Victoria, and Lakes Ladoga and Onega in northeastern Eurasia. From 1 to 10% of the rRNA extracted from size-fractionated picoplankton (>0.2 µm but <1.2 µm) collected in the epilimnion and hypolimnion of these lakes was specific to the Archaea, whereas the majority of rRNA was derived from Bacteria. Analysis of the 16S rRNA genes cloned from these samples indicated they were closely related to crenarchaeal sequences that have been widely characterized from marine environments. The presence of nearly identical 16S rDNA clones in several of these geographically disparate lakes suggests a cosmopolitan distribution of specific subgroups of these Archaea in freshwater environments. Despite their abundance in the water column of freshwater lakes, we have no representatives of these crenarchaea in pure culture, and so their physiological characteristics and ecological role remain unknown. Background: Additional interventions are needed to reduce the morbidity and mortality caused by malaria.Methods: We conducted a two-part, phase 1 clinical trial to assess the safety and pharmacokinetics of CIS43LS, an antimalarial monoclonal antibody with an extended half-life, and its efficacy against infection with Plasmodium falciparum. Part A of the trial assessed the safety, initial side-effect profile, and pharmacokinetics of CIS43LS in healthy adults who had never had malaria. Participants received CIS43LS subcutaneously or intravenously at one of three escalating dose levels. A subgroup of participants from Part A continued to Part B, and some received a second CIS43LS infusion. Additional participants were enrolled in Part B and received CIS43LS intravenously. To assess the protective efficacy of CIS43LS, some participants underwent controlled human malaria infection in which they were exposed to mosquitoes carrying P. falciparum sporozoites 4 to 36 weeks after administration of CIS43LS.Results: A total of 25 participants received CIS43LS at a dose of 5 mg per kilogram of body weight, 20 mg per kilogram, or 40 mg per kilogram, and 4 of the 25 participants received a second dose (20 mg per kilogram regardless of initial dose). No safety concerns were identified. We observed dose-dependent increases in CIS43LS serum concentrations, with a half-life of 56 days. None of the 9 participants who received CIS43LS, as compared with 5 of 6 control participants who did not receive CIS43LS, had parasitemia according to polymerase-chain-reaction testing through 21 days after controlled human malaria infection. Two participants who received 40 mg per kilogram of CIS43LS and underwent controlled human malaria infection approximately 36 weeks later had no parasitemia, with serum concentrations of CIS43LS of 46 and 57 μg per milliliter at the time of controlled human malaria infection.Conclusions: Among adults who had never had malaria infection or vaccination, administration of the long-acting monoclonal antibody CIS43LS prevented malaria after controlled infection. The dominant transport process for removing charged species from soils by electric fields is electromigration. In the case of heavy metals, the polarity and magnitude of the charge depends on the pH. Positive ions are generally stable at low pH and negatively charged complexes dominate at high pH. The transport is further complicated by the strong dependence of solubility on pH, with many heavy metals being virtually insoluble in moderately alkaline conditions. It was found experimentally that under certain conditions, strong pH gradienis can develop in the soil trapping the metals by a process of isoelectric focusing, A numerical model of the transport and electrochemical processes was extended for the first time to incorporate complexation and precipitation reactions and was found to closely reproduce the experimental findings. The model demonstrates the role played by background ions and electroneutrality in governing the distribution of species, and how the concomitant variations in the electric field result in the virtual cessation of the transport process. Here, we report on the outcome of the 2nd International Danube Symposium on advanced biomarker development that was held in Vienna, Austria, in early 2018. During the meeting, cross-speciality participants assessed critical aspects of non-invasive, quantitative biomarker development in view of the need to expand our understanding of disease mechanisms and the definition of appropriate strategies both for molecular diagnostics and personalised therapies. More specifically, panelists addressed the main topics, including the current status of disease characterisation by means of non-invasive imaging, histopathology and liquid biopsies as well as strategies of gaining new understanding of disease formation, modulation and plasticity to large-scale molecular imaging as well as integrative multi-platform approaches. Highlights of the 2018 meeting included dedicated sessions on non-invasive disease characterisation, development of disease and therapeutic tailored biomarkers, standardisation and quality measures in biospecimens, new therapeutic approaches and socio-economic challenges of biomarker developments. The scientific programme was accompanied by a roundtable discussion on identification and implementation of sustainable strategies to address the educational needs in the rapidly evolving field of molecular diagnostics. The central theme that emanated from the 2nd Donau Symposium was the importance of the conceptualisation and implementation of a convergent approach towards a disease characterisation beyond lesion-counting "lumpology" for a cost-effective and patient-centric diagnosis, therapy planning, guidance and monitoring. This involves a judicious choice of diagnostic means, the adoption of clinical decision support systems and, above all, a new way of communication involving all stakeholders across modalities and specialities. Moreover, complex diseases require a comprehensive diagnosis by converging parameters from different disciplines, which will finally yield to a precise therapeutic guidance and outcome prediction. Wafer bonding and hydrogen implantation exfoliation techniques have been used to fabricate a thin InP template layer on GaAs with intermediate silicon nitride bonding layers. This template layer was used to directly compare subsequent metal organic vapor phase epitaxial growth of InGaAs/InAlAs quantum-well structures on these wafer-bonded templates to growth on a standard InP substrate. Chemical mechanical polishing of the bonded structure and companion InP substrates was assessed. No effects from the coefficient of thermal mismatch are detected up to the growth temperature, and compositionally equivalent structures are grown on the wafer-bonded InP template and the bare InP substrate. However, after growth dislocation, loops can be identified in the InP template layer due to the ion implantation step. These defects incur a slight mosaic tilt but do not yield any crystalline defects in the epitaxial structure. Low-temperature photoluminescence measurements of the InGaAs grown on the template structure and the InP substrate exhibit near-band-edge luminescence on the same order; this indicates that ion implantation and exfoliation is a viable technique for the integration of III-V materials.
