Abstract: This work deals with the computation of Hopf bifurcation points in the framework of two-dimensional fluid flows. These bifurcation points are determined by using a Hybrid method [1] which associates an indicator curve and a Newton method. The indicator provides initial values for the Newton method. As the calculus of this indicator is time consuming, we suggest using an algorithm to save computational time. This algorithm alternates reduced order and full size step resolution which are all carried out by using a pertubation method. Hence, the computed vectors on the full size problem are used to define the reduced order model. As the low-dimensional model has a finite validity range, we propose a simple criterion which makes it possible to know when the basis has to be updated. The latter phase is carried out by going through a new full step which permits to build a new basis and, thus, compute a supplementary part of the indicator curve. Some numerical tests, such as the classical lid-driven cavity or the flow in a channel, permit to fix the optimum values of the parameters for the proposed method. The objective of this study is to save computational time without modifying the performance of the Hybrid method initially introduced in Ref. [1]. These numerical methods are applied to 2D fluid flows (flow in a channel and the 2D lid-driven cavity). Our conclusions, therefore, hold only for these kinds of problem. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

At 92, the former President Ronald Reagan is in the last stages of Alzheimer's, the devastating disease from which he has suffered for nearly a decade. The once-robust leader of the free world can no longer speak, feed himself or even recognize his wife. Confined to a hospital bed, or occasionally placed in a wheelchair, he spends his days in a small room, where--on orders from a wife ferociously intent on guarding his dignity--even his closest friends have been forbidden to visit. While the former President's condition may come as a shock to admirers, for his wife, Nancy, it has become the focus of her life. According to friends, in recent years she has only rarely left her husband's side, especially since Ronald underwent hip surgery in 2001. With the help of doctors, nurses and a full-time housekeeping staff, Nancy, 82, spends nearly every day overseeing her husband's care--part of an increasingly lonely vigil that she calls "the long goodbye." Nancy had cataract surgery earlier this year, and the former First Lady's health is said to be more fragile, the emotional toll on her life increasingly visible. Yet friends of the couple take comfort in the fact that Ronald's illness has to a certain degree reunited their once-fractured family. Daughter Patti Davis, who wrote a bitter and thinly disguised fictional account of her family before reconciling with her mother two years ago, is now a regular visitor to the house. Jessica Lynch, 20, edged her wheelchair closer to a microphone and spoke publicly for the first time since her April 1, 2003 rescue from Iraqi captivity became world news. Lori Piestewa, 23, one of 11 members of the 507th Maintenance Company who died during the March 23 ambush. Some critics in the U.S. and Britain have charged that the Pentagon--anxious for some good news from the war in Iraq--either exaggerated details of her capture and rescue or at least failed to correct media reports the military knew to be overly dramatic. Identity theft--stealing Social Security numbers, credit card details and other personal data--is one of the fastest growing crimes in the U.S., affecting as many as 10 million Americans a year. And soldiers are especially vulnerable. The reasons, according to experts, are simple: GIs' Social Security numbers are printed on their military ID cards--and form the "serial number" they regularly recite along with name and rank; they spend long periods overseas or moving between states, often switching banks; and many are young and inexperienced at handling money. A month after 9/11, the Jamaican immigrant Tarick Fuller enlisted in the Army, serving as a supply clerk first in Afghanistan, then in Iraq. He sent his $1,800 monthly pay back to Fort Bragg, N.C., where he hoped to buy a home and start a family with his wife, Cassandra, 20, now 41/2 months pregnant. Fuller received letters from a bank where he did not have an account, saying that he had bounced checks. Fuller had his mother contact his credit union and learned that a man carrying military identification with Fuller's name on it had withdrawn almost all of his money. By the time police caught the culprit--Army Spc. Troy Billups, a soldier in the same unit who was discharged after Fuller was deployed--he had used Fuller's Social Security number to set up four checking accounts, obtain a driver's license and spend nearly $20,000 of Fuller's money on a car, groceries, cell phones--even a $3,700 Valentine's Day spree. The Pentagon has begun educating troops about the problem and in February stopped printing Social Security numbers on military paychecks. Last December Congress also passed the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, which allows service members to put a special fraud warning on their accounts when they are shipped overseas. Shortly before his death on Oct. 5 from complications following heart surgery, Rodney Dangerfield briefly emerged from a coma and found himself surrounded by those he loved. For audiences, though, Dangerfield will always be the lovable loser, a Borscht Belt veteran who punctuated his comedy routines with his trademark mantra of failure: " I don't get no respect." Even by comedy standards, where the most successful are often the most insecure, Dangerfield's jokes sprang unfiltered from a life with more than its share of pain. His career peaked in 1980 as a boorish millionaire in Caddyshack. More comedies followed--such as Back to School and Easy Money--as well as a chilling performance in 1994's Natural Born Killers. Still, Dangerfield preferred a live audience, and it was Dangerfield's, his successful New York City comedy club, that gave him the greatest pleasure. In recent years, Dangerfield--who wed Joan Child, a florist, in 1993--suffered from heart problems and underwent double bypass surgery in 2000. Through it all, he delighted in kicking himself when he was down.

This article reports on a press conference given by New Jersey's governor Jim McGreevey in August 2004. That day, Dina McGreevey stood by her husband's side as he delivered one of the most singular confessional speeches in American political history, during which he admitted to having a consensual affair with another man. A blistering assault on President George W. Bush, Michael Moore's new film, Fahrenheit 9/11, accuses the White House of dithering while terrorists plotted to attack America, lying to the public about the Iraq war and being in the pocket of rich Saudis--including the family of Osama bin Laden. While Bush's Democratic opponent John Kerry has yet to comment on the controversial film (opening this weekend in more than 500 theaters), plenty of prominent liberals have embraced it. On the other side of the ideological spectrum, Fahrenheit has been condemned as reckless propaganda. Move America Forward, a conservative group, is calling on citizens to protest the film, and its founder Howard Kaloogian calls Moore "a domestic enemy." In Fahrenheit, Moore makes much of the close relationship between the Bush family and Saudi Arabia. As a young man, George W. received $50,000 from James R. Bath, a friend who served as a financial adviser to a brother of Osama bin Laden, to launch his oil company Arbusto. Indeed, many journalists believe that the bin Laden family were probably invested in Arbusto, but investigative reporter Bill Allison, managing editor of the Center for Public Integrity in Washington, D.C., says the link between George W. and Osama "is a pretty shaky connection." Moore's charges that the White House allowed Saudi royals and members of the bin Laden family to flee the country after 9/11, when all other flights had been grounded, have also been widely reported. But the bipartisan 9/11 commission has found that no Saudi planes left before air traffic officially resumed, and the FBI says none who left had terrorist ties. Some believe Fahrenheit is at its most persuasive when there is less of Moore: There is strong footage of angst-ridden recruits in Iraq, a U.S. soldier fondling an Iraqi prisoner and a videotape of President Bush in a Florida elementary school classroom for nearly seven minutes after hearing that a second plane had struck the Twin Towers.

Quick--your 22-year-old twin daughters are graduating from different colleges, 1,500 miles apart. What's a parent to do? It helps to have Air Force One at your disposal. On May 22 George and Laura Bush will host a private dinner for close friends and family to honor daughter Jenna after she graduates with a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Texas in Austin. The very next day they'll be in New Haven, Conn., to fete her twin sister, Barbara, a Yale humanities major. Then it's time to join the real world: Jenna, a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority at UT with an interest in education, will move to Manhattan, share an apartment with friends and do volunteer work with school kids. Barbara, a frequent visitor to New York City during her Yale years, will intern with a pediatric AIDS program at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom grants marriage licenses to gay couples--and sparks a national movement. In his office at San Francisco City Hall, Mayor Gavin Newsom is talking about the moment that launched a thousand weddings. On Jan. 20 he was in Washington, D.C., to attend the State of the Union address when President Bush praised the Defense of Marriage Act, a law that defines marriage as an act between a man and a woman. Says Newsom: "At that point in my mind I realized the President was going to use this as a wedge issue to divide this country. I felt offended by it." Newsom's wife, "Court TV" host Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom, who has been listening quietly, suddenly perks up: "If the people in that room only had a clue what you were going to do!" After huddling with his advisers back in San Francisco, some of whom warned he was about to commit political suicide, Newsom jump-started the national debate over gay marriage on Feb. 12 by issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Mayors in towns and cities across the country were soon following Newsom's lead, heartening supporters of gay marriage--and calling to arms those who oppose it. Newsom vows to keep up his crusade, although the matter is now in the hands of the courts. In the meantime, with his matinee-star good looks and an obvious flair for political theater, he has already emerged a winner.
