Objective: Focal to bilateral tonic–clonic seizures (FBTCS) represent a challenging subtype of focal temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) in terms of both severity and treatment response. Most studies have focused on regional brain analysis that is agnostic to the distribution of white matter (WM) pathways associated with a node. We implemented a more selective, edge‐wise approach that allowed for identification of the individual connections unique to FBTCS. Methods: T1‐weighted and diffusion‐weighted images were obtained from 22 patients with solely focal seizures (FS), 43 FBTCS patients, and 65 age/sex‐matched healthy participants (HPs), yielding streamline (STR) connectome matrices. We used diffusion tensor‐derived STRs in an edge‐wise approach to determine specific structural connectivity changes associated with seizure generalization in FBTCS compared to matched FS and HPs. Graph theory metrics were computed on both node‐ and edge‐based connectivity matrices. Results: Edge‐wise analyses demonstrated that all significantly abnormal cross‐hemispheric connections belonged to the FBTCS group. Abnormal connections associated with FBTCS were mostly housed in the contralateral hemisphere, with graph metric values generally decreased compared to HPs. In FBTCS, the contralateral amygdala showed selective decreases in the structural connection pathways to the contralateral frontal lobe. Abnormal connections in TLE involved the amygdala, with the ipsilateral side showing increases and the contralateral decreases. All the FS findings indicated higher graph metrics for connections involving the ipsilateral amygdala. Data also showed that some FBTCS connectivity effects are moderated by aging, recent seizure frequency, and longer illness duration. Significance: Data showed that not all STR pathways are equally affected by the seizure propagation of FBTCS. We demonstrated two key biases, one indicating a large role for the amygdala in the propagation of seizures, the other pointing to the prominent role of cross‐hemispheric and contralateral hemisphere connections in FBTCS. The title of Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) represents the highest accolade in China's scientific research field. Profiling the characteristics of CAS academicians can provide crucial insights into the current state of scientific research in China and play a vital role in fostering innovation and cultivating talents for the society. This study conducted a comprehensive quantitative analysis of the birthplaces, ages, genders, educational backgrounds, institutional affiliations, and administrative roles of newly elected CAS academicians from 2005 to 2023. Several key findings are identified, including: (1) the majority of newly elected CAS academicians originate from eastern and central regions of China, with about one-quarter from provincial capitals. (2) the average age of newly elected CAS academicians is younger compared to Nobel Prize laureates in natural sciences. (3) the percentage of newly elected CAS academicians who possess doctorate degrees has been increasing year by year. (4) the work units of newly elected CAS academicians are primarily the Chinese Academy of Sciences and its affiliated research institutes, as well as universities directly under the Ministry of Education. The average number of administrative positions held by these academicians is around four, and the number of positions held after their election tends to be higher than before. Objective. Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is one of the worst-prognosis malignant tumors. This study used bioinformatic analysis of the transcriptome sequencing data of HNSCC and the patients' survival and clinical data to construct a prediction signature of glycolysis-related genes as the prognostic risk markers. Methods. Gene expression profile data about HNSCC tissues (n = 498) and normal tissues in the head and neck (n = 44) were got from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), as well as patients' survival and clinical data. Then, we obtained core genes; their expression in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma tissues is significantly different from that in normal head and neck tissues. The predicted glycolysis-related genes are screened through univariate Cox regression analysis, and then, the prognostic risk markers were constructed through further correction of multivariate Cox regression analysis. The Kaplan-Meier curve and receiver operating characteristic curve are used to analyze the potential value of these risk markers in diagnosis and prognosis. We also evaluated that the glycolysis-related prognostic risk markers composed of 6 oncogenes are correlated with clinical features, such as age, gender, grade, and clinical stage of the tumor, by univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. Results. Differentially expressed glycolytic genes in HNSCC tissues and normal head and neck tissues were screened from TCGA databases using the bioinformatic method. We confirmed a set of six glycolytic genes that were significantly associated with OS in the test series. According to our analysis, the prognostic risk markers composed of HPRT1, STC2, PLCB3, GPR87, PYGL, and SLC5A12 may be an independent risk factor for the prognosis of HNSCC. Conclusions. Through this analysis, we constructed new prognostic risk markers related to glycolysis as a prognostic risk marker for patients with HNSCC and provided new ideas and molecular targets for the research and individualized treatment of HNSCC. Achieving greater understanding of their underlying circuitry offers better opportunity to control these seizures. Towards this goal, we provide a network science perspective of the interactive pathways among basal ganglia, thalamus and cortex, to explore the imprinting of secondary seizure generalization on the mesoscale brain network in temporal lobe epilepsy. Specifically, we parameterized the functional organization of both the thalamocortical network and the basal ganglia–thalamus network with resting state functional MRI in three groups of patients with different focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizure histories. Using the participation coefficient to describe the pattern of thalamocortical connections among different cortical networks, we showed that, compared to patients with no previous history, those with positive histories of focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures, including both remote (none for >1 year) and current (within the past year) histories, presented more uniform distribution patterns of thalamocortical connections in the ipsilateral medial-dorsal thalamic nuclei. As a sign of greater thalamus-mediated cortico-cortical communication, this result comports with greater susceptibility to secondary seizure generalization from the epileptogenic temporal lobe to broader brain networks in these patients. Using interregional integration to characterize the functional interaction between basal ganglia and thalamus, we demonstrated that patients with current history presented increased interaction between putamen and globus pallidus internus, and decreased interaction between the latter and the thalamus, compared to the other two patient groups. Importantly, through a series of 'disconnection' simulations, we showed that these changes in interactive profiles of the basal ganglia–thalamus network in the current history group mainly depended upon the direct but not the indirect basal ganglia pathway. It is intuitively plausible that such disruption in the striatum-modulated tonic inhibition of the thalamus from the globus pallidus internus could lead to an under-suppressed thalamus, which in turn may account for their greater vulnerability to secondary seizure generalization. Collectively, these findings suggest that the broken balance between basal ganglia inhibition and thalamus synchronization can inform the presence and effective control of focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures. Whether polarity and molecular weight (MW) of compost-derived organic matters have significant impacts on their redox properties are far unknown. Our results showed that both the Fe 2 O 3 and Fe 3 O 4 reduction by S. oneidensis MR-1 were effectively facilitated by compost-derived humic acids (HAs) under anoxic condition. Among the 15 kinds of compost-derived components identified by the reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and high-performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC), the relatively hydrophilic and high MW compost-derived components presented significant associations with Fe 2 O 3 reduction, and the hydrophobic components correlated well with Fe 3 O 4 reduction. Quinones content and aromaticity of the compost-derived HAs presented positive correlation with Fe(III) oxides reduction. These findings demonstrated the impacts of the polarity and MW of compost-derived HAs on Fe(III) oxides reduction, further suggested that compost-derived HAs could influence the geochemical behaviors of heavy metal, organic pollutants and nutrient elements in natural environment by facilitating the reduction of Fe(III) oxides, which were very useful for the improvement of composting technology and application of compost products. Understanding the heterogeneous evolution characteristics of dissolved organic matter fractions derived from compost is crucial to exploring the composting biodegradation process and the possible applications of compost products. Herein, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy integrated with reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography and size exclusion chromatography were utilized to obtain the molecular weight (MW) and polarity evolution characteristics of humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA), and the hydrophilic (HyI) fractions during composting. The high-MW humic substances and building blocks in the HA fraction degraded faster during composting than polymers, proteins, and organic colloids. Similarly, the low MW acid FA factions transformed faster than the low weight neutral fractions, followed by building blocks, and finally polymers, proteins, and organic colloids. The evolutions of HyI fractions during composting occurred first for building blocks, followed by low MW acids, and finally low weight neutrals. With the progress of composting, the hydrophobic properties of the HA and FA fractions were enhanced. The degradation/humification process of the hydrophilic and transphilic components was faster than that of the hydrophobic component. Humic substance (HS) could be utilized by humus-reducing microorganisms (HRMs) as the terminal acceptors. Meanwhile, the reduction of HS can support the microbial growth. This process would greatly affect the redox conversion of inorganic and organic pollutants. However, whether the redox properties of HS lined with HRMs community during composting still remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the relationships between the redox capability of HS [i.e. humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA)] and HRMs during composting. The results showed that the changing patterns of electron accepting capacity and electron donating capacity of HS were diverse during seven composting. Electron transfer capacities (ETC) of HA was significantly correlated with the functional groups (i.e. alkyl C, O-alkyl C, aryl C, carboxylic C, aromatic C), aromaticity and molecular weight of HA. Aromatic C, phenols, aryl C, carboxylic C, aromaticity and molecular weight of HS were the main structural features associated with the ETC of FA. Ten key genera of HRMs were found significantly determine these redox-active functional groups of HS during composting, thus influencing the ETC of HS in composts. In addition, a regulating method was suggested to enhance the ETC of HS during composting based on the relationships between the key HRMs and redox-active functional groups as well as environmental variables. Resting-state networks (RSNs) show spatial patterns generally consistent with networks revealed during cognitive tasks. However, the exact degree of overlap between these networks has not been clearly quantified. Such an investigation shows promise for decoding altered functional connectivity (FC) related to abnormal language functioning in clinical populations such as temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). In this context, we investigated the network configurations during a language task and during resting state using FC. Twenty-four healthy controls, 24 right and 24 left TLE patients completed a verb generation (VG) task and a resting-state fMRI scan. We compared the language network revealed by the VG task with three FC-based networks (seeding the left inferior frontal cortex (IFC)/Broca): two from the task (ON, OFF blocks) and one from the resting state. We found that, for both left TLE patients and controls, the RSN recruited regions bilaterally, whereas both VG-on and VG-off conditions produced more left-lateralized FC networks, matching more closely with the activated language network. TLE brings with it variability in both task-dependent and task-independent networks, reflective of atypical language organization. Overall, our findings suggest that our RSN captured bilateral activity, reflecting a set of prepotent language regions. We propose that this relationship can be best understood by the notion of pruning or winnowing down of the larger language-ready RSN to carry out specific task demands. Our data suggest that multiple types of network analyses may be needed to decode the association between language deficits and the underlying functional mechanisms altered by disease. Objective Focal epilepsies, such as temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), are known to disrupt network activity in areas outside the epileptogenic zone [Tracy et al., 2015]. We devised a measure of temporal instability of resting state functional connectivity (FC), capturing temporal variations of BOLD correlations between brain regions that is less confounded than the 'sliding window' approach common in the literature. Methods We investigated healthy controls and unilateral TLE patients (right and left seizure focus groups), utilizing group ICA to identify the default mode network (DMN), a network associated with episodic memory, a key cognitive deficit in TLE. Our instability analyses focused on: (1) connectivity between DMN region pairs, both within and between TLE patients and matched controls, (2) whole brain group differences between region pairs ipsilateral or contralateral to the epileptogenic temporal lobe. Results For both the whole brain and a more focused analysis of DMN region pairs, temporal stability appears to characterize the healthy brain. The TLE patients displayed more FC instability compared to controls, with this instability more pronounced for the right TLE patients. Significance Our findings challenge the view that the resting state signal is stable over time, providing a measure of signal coherence change that may generate insights into the temporal components of network organization. The precuneus was the region within the DMN consistently expressing this instability, suggesting this region plays a key role in large scale temporal dynamics of the DMN, with such dynamics disrupted in TLE, putting key cognitive functions at risk. The humification of water extractable organic matter (WEOM) by microorganisms is widely used for assessing compost maturity and quality. However, the effect of bacterial and fungal community dynamics on humification of WEOM was not yet explored fully. Here, we used canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and redundancy analysis (RDA) to investigate the link between bacterial and fungal community dynamics and humification process of WEOM, respectively. Results showed that water-soluble carbon (WSC), humification degree, molecule weight and abundance of aromatic carbon were significantly related to bacterial community ( p < 0.05), while the protein-like materials were statistically influenced by fungal community ( p < 0.05). Both bacterial and fungal communities significantly affected the abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups and humic-like materials ( p < 0.05). These humification parameters were most likely to be influenced by some of bacterial and fungal species at different composting stages. Lactobacillus , Aspergillus fumigatus and Galactomyces geotrichum can enhance the degradation of WSC and protein-like materials at the early composting. Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes could promote the increase of aromatic carbon, oxygen-containing functional groups, humification degree and molecular weight of WEOM during the initial fermentation stage. Cladosporium herbarum and Chaetomium globosum could be the dominant controllers at the second fermentation for accelerating the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups and humic-like materials of WEOM, respectively. Our results suggested that regulation for the dynamics of these special bacterial and fungal species at different composting stages might be a potential way to accelerate humification of municipal solid waste composting. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) affects multiple brain regions through evidence from both structural (gray matter; GM) and functional connectivity (FC) studies. We tested whether these structural abnormalities were associated with FC abnormalities, and assessed the ability of these measures to explain episodic memory impairments in this population. A resting-state and T1 sequences were acquired on 94 (45 with mesial temporal pathology) TLE patients and 50 controls, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique. A voxel-based morphometry analysis was computed to determine the GM volume differences between groups (right, left TLE, controls). Resting-state FC between the abnormal GM volume regions was computed, and compared between groups. Finally, we investigated the relation between EM, GM and FC findings. Patients with and without temporal pathology were analyzed separately. The results revealed reduced GM volume in multiple regions in the patients relative to the controls. Using FC, we found the abnormal GM regions did not display abnormal functional connectivity. Lastly, we found in left TLE patients, verbal episodic memory was associated with abnormal left posterior hippocampus volume, while in right TLE, non-verbal episodic memory was better predicted by resting-state FC measures. This study investigated TLE abnormalities using a multi-modal approach combining GM, FC and neurocognitive measures. We did not find that the GM abnormalities were functionally or abnormally connected during an inter-ictal resting state, which may reflect a weak sensitivity of functional connectivity to the epileptic network. We provided evidence that verbal and non-verbal episodic memory in left and right TLE patients may have distinct relationships with structural and functional measures. Lastly, we provide data suggesting that in the setting of occult, non-lesional right TLE pathology, a coupling of structural and functional abnormalities in extra-temporal/non-ictal regions is necessary to produce reductions in episodic memory recall. The latter, in particular, demonstrates the complex structure/function interactions at work when trying to understand cognition in TLE, suggesting that subtle network effects can emerge bearing specific relationships to hemisphere and the type of pathology. In this study, PCR-DGGE method was applied to investigate the impact of multi-stage inoculation treatment on the community composition of bacterial and fungal during municipal solid wastes (MSW) composting process. The results showed that the high temperature period was extended by the multi-stage inoculation treatment, 1 day longer than initial-stage inoculation treatment, and 5 days longer than non-inoculation treatment. The temperature of the secondary fermentation increased to 51 °C with multi-stage inoculation treatment. The multi-stage inoculation method improved the community diversity of bacteria and fungi that the diversity indexes reached the maximum on the 17 days and 20 days respectively, avoided the competition between inoculations and indigenous microbes, and enhanced the growth of dominant microorganisms. The DNA sequence indicated that various kinds of uncultured microorganisms with determined ratios were detected, which were dominant microbes during the whole fermentation process. Objective In temporal lobe epilepsy ( TLE), the thalamus is well known for its role in the propagation and spread of epileptiform activity. However, the integrity of thalamocortical functional connectivity ( FC) in TLE and its relation to specific seizure patterns have not yet been determined. We address these issues with resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (f MRI). Methods Resting-state f MRI was performed on two groups of unilateral TLE patients: those with focal seizures only (16 left TLE, 16 right TLE) and those with additional generalized seizures (16 left TLE, 10 right TLE), and 16 matched controls. A thalamic parcellation based on FC between five nonoverlapping cortical seeds (prefrontal, motor, somatosensory, parietal-occipital, and temporal) and the ipsilateral thalamus was carried out to parcel each thalamus into five corresponding segments. FCs between each segment and its ipsilateral cortical seed were extracted and compared across groups using analyses of variance ( ANOVAs). Results Compared to healthy controls, patients with TLE displayed decreased thalamocortical FC in multiple posterior and ventromedial thalamic segments of both the ictal and nonictal hemispheres. Our parcellation analysis revealed that these thalamic regions were functionally connected to the parietal/occipital and temporal lobes. In patients with TLE with focal seizures these regional thalamocortical FC decreases were limited to the ictal hemisphere. In contrast, TLE patients with both focal and generalized epileptiform activity displayed FC decreases in both the ictal and nonictal thalamus involving the dorsolateral pulvinar, a region preferentially connected to the parietal and occipital lobes. Significance Our data provide the first evidence of regional specific thalamocortical FC decreases in patients with unilateral TLE. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that patients with different seizure types present different thalamoparietal/occipital FC decrease patterns. While patients with focal seizures present thalamocortical FC decreases in the ictal hemisphere only, patients with additional generalized seizure activity also show thalamocortical FC decreases involving the thalamus in the nonictal hemisphere. Brain structure deteriorates with aging and predisposes an individual to more severe language impairments (aphasia) after a stroke. However, the underlying mechanisms of this relation are not well understood. Here we use an approach to model brain network properties outside the stroke lesion, network controllability, to investigate relations among individualized structural brain connections, brain age, and aphasia severity in 93 participants with chronic post-stroke aphasia. Controlling for the stroke lesion size, we observe that lower average controllability of the posterior superior temporal gyrus (STG) mediates the relation between advanced brain aging and aphasia severity. Lower controllability of the left posterior STG signifies that activity in the left posterior STG is less likely to yield a response in other brain regions due to the topological properties of the structural brain networks. These results indicate that advanced brain aging among individuals with post-stroke aphasia is associated with disruption of dynamic properties of a critical language-related area, the STG, which contributes to worse aphasic symptoms. Because brain aging is variable among individuals with aphasia, our results provide further insight into the mechanisms underlying the variance in clinical trajectories in post-stroke aphasia. Analysis of network controllability in a cohort of 93 participants with chronic post-stroke aphasia suggests that advanced brain aging among these individuals is associated with disrupted superior temporal gyrus dynamics, which in turn contributes to worse aphasia symptoms. Neuromodulation is an increasingly utilized therapy for the treatment of people with drug-resistant epilepsy. To date, the most common and effective target has been the thalamus, which is known to play a key role in multiple forms of epilepsy. Neuroimaging has facilitated rapid developments in the understanding of functional targets, surgical and programming techniques, and the effects of thalamic stimulation. In this review, the role of neuroimaging in neuromodulation is explored. First, the structural and functional changes of the thalamus in common epilepsy syndromes are discussed as the rationale for neuromodulation of the thalamus. Next, methods for imaging different thalamic nuclei are presented, as well as rationale for the need of direct surgical targeting rather than reliance on traditional stereotactic coordinates. Damage of oligodendrocytes after ischemia has negative impact on white matter integrity and neuronal function. In this work, we explore whether Netrin-1 (NT-1) overexpression facilitates white matter repairing and remodeling. Adult CD-1 mice received stereotactic injection of adeno-associated virus carrying NT-1 gene (AAV-NT-1). One week after gene transfer, mice underwent 60 minutes of middle cerebral artery occlusion. The effect of NT-1 on neural function was evaluated by neurobehavioral tests. Proliferated oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs), newly matured oligodendrocytes, and remyelination were semi-quantified by immunohistochemistry. The role of NT-1 in oligodendrogenesis was further explored by examining specific NT-1 receptors and their function. Netrin-1 overexpression was detected in neurons and astrocytes 2 weeks after AAV-NT-1 gene transfer and significantly improved the neurobehavioral outcomes compared with the control (P<0.05). In comparison with the control, proliferated OPCs, newly matured oligodendrocytes, and remyelination were greatly increased in the ipsilateral hemisphere of AAV-NT-1-transduced mice. Furthermore, both NT-1 receptors deleted in colorectal carcinoma and UNC5H2 were expressed on OPCs whereas only UNC5H2 was expressed in myelinated axons. Our study indicated that NT-1 promoted OPC proliferation, differentiation, and increased remyelination, suggesting that NT-1 is a promising factor for white matter repairing and remodeling after ischemia. Cognitive impairment is a common comorbidity of epilepsy, and adversely impacts people with both frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). While its neural substrates have been extensively investigated in TLE, functional imaging studies in FLE are scarce. In this study, we profiled the neural processes underlying cognitive impairment in FLE, and directly compared FLE and TLE to establish commonalities and differences. We investigated 172 adult participants (56 with FLE, 64 with TLE, and 52 controls) using neuropsychological tests and four functional MRI tasks probing expressive language (verbal fluency, verb generation) and working memory (verbal and visuo-spatial). Patient groups were comparable in disease duration and anti-seizure medication load. We devise a multiscale approach to map brain activation and deactivation during cognition, and track reorganization in FLE and TLE. Voxel-based analyses were complemented with profiling of task effects across established motifs of functional brain organization: (i) canonical resting-state functional systems, and (ii) the principal functional connectivity gradient, which encodes a continuous transition of regional connectivity profiles, anchoring lower-level sensory and transmodal brain areas at the opposite ends of a spectrum. We show that cognitive impairment in FLE is associated with reduced activation across attentional and executive systems, and reduced deactivation of the default mode system, indicative of a large-scale disorganization of task-related recruitment. The imaging signatures of dysfunction in FLE were broadly similar to those in TLE, but some patterns were syndrome-specific: altered default-mode deactivation was more prominent in FLE, while impaired recruitment of posterior language areas during a task with semantic demands was more marked in TLE. Functional abnormalities in FLE and TLE appeared overall modulated by disease load. On balance, our study elucidates neural processes underlying language and working memory impairment in FLE, identifies shared and syndrome-specific alterations in the two most common focal epilepsies, and sheds light on system behavior that may be amenable to future remediation strategies. Abstract: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the most active component in environmental system, and its chemical and structural characteristics are most likely to affect its biodegradation. DOM has several different fluorophores whose fluorescent characteristics contain a lot of information about structure and functional groups. Fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) were used to examine the structural and biodegradable characteristics of DOM extracted from fermentation effluent of swine manure slurry. Humic-like acid, fulvic-like acid and protein-like fluorophores were observed in fluorescence spectra. Fluorescence index (FI) indicated that the fluorophores in the samples were representative of both terrestrial and microbially-derived organic matter. FTIR spectroscopy showed that DOM featured aliphatic Cic Cbohydrate Cnal groups. With PARAFAC model, four fluorescent components were identified: component 1 (protein-like), component 2 (soluble microbial byproduct-like), component 3 (non-humic like) and component 4 (fulvic-like). Component 1 was a dominant fluorescent component. Components 2, 3 and 4 were degraded by microorganisms as the anaerobic fermentation processes. The C/N ratio of DOM in F1 has a more significant decrease than that in F0, indicating the loss of carbon (CH4 and CO2) during this process. Abstract: This paper aims to characterize the evolution of water extractable organic matter (WEOM) during the composting of municipal solid waste (MSW), and investigate the correlation between maturity and WEOM characteristics. WEOM was extracted at different stages of MSW composting (0, 7, 14, 21, and 51d) and characterized by FTIR, UV–Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results obtained show that the composting process decreased aliphatics, alcohols, polysaccharides, as well as protein-like materials, and increased aromatic polycondensation, humification, oxygen-containing functional groups, molecular weight, and humic-like materials. The maturity of MSW during composting was characterized by the presence of the peak with an excitation/emission wavelength pair of 289/421nm in excitation–emission matrix spectra. Objective To explore the expression of cancer stem cells (CSC) markers named ABCG2, CD44, CD34 in hu man nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) CNE-2,5-8F and 6-10B cell lines to provide the basis of CSC markers research of NPC. Methods The NPC cell lines of CNE2, 5-8F and 6-10B were cultivated regularly, of which, ABCG2, CD44, CD34 cell ratio was detected with flow cytometry. Results ABCG2 positive cells accounted about 0.1% ,18.6% and 19.9% in the CNE-2,5-8F,6- 10B cell lines. CD44 positive cells accounted 99.5%, 93.2% and 99.1% in the CNE-2, 5-8F and 6-10B cell lines. CD34 positive cells accounted 0, 3.0%and 0.1% in the CNE2,5-8F,and 6-10B cell lines. ABCG2+ CD44+ cell interation accounted about 11.6% and ABCG2+CD44+ cell interation accounted about 0 in 5-8F cell lines. Conclusion The expression proportion of CD34Q in the 5-8F and 6-10B cell lines confirms to CSC markers of the CSC theory. CD34 may be deemed as a candidate marker of nasopharyngeal neoplas. The fate of organic pollutants in environmental matrices can be determined by degradation and humification. The humification process represents a promising strategy to remove organic pollutants, particularly those resistant to degradation. In contrast to the well-studied degradation process, the contribution and application prospects of the humification process for organic pollutant removal has been underestimated. The recent progress in synthesizing artificial humic substances (HS) has made directed humification of recalcitrant organic pollutants possible. This review focuses on degradation and humification of organic matter, especially recalcitrant organic pollutants. Challenges in understanding the contribution, underlying mechanisms, and artificial synthesis of HS for removing organic pollutants are also critically discussed. We advocate further investigating the humification of organic pollutants in future studies. Degradation and humification synergistically determine the environmental fate of organic pollutants. In contrast to previous studies focusing on degradation processes, humification represents a promising but underestimated strategy for removing recalcitrant organic pollutants. In degradation processes, reduced organic matter is utilized as electron donors to support oxidative respiration, or as fermentation substrates to produce volatile fatty acids. By contrast, recalcitrant oxidized organic matter needs to be reduced prior to subsequent degradation. Many pathways are identified for the generation of humic substances (HS), in which microbes play key roles in providing HS precursors and in subsequent polymerization. Network control theory provides a framework by which neurophysiological dynamics of the brain can be modelled as a function of the structural connectome constructed from diffusion MRI. Average controllability describes the ability of a region to drive the brain to easy-to-reach neurophysiological states whilst modal controllability describes the ability of a region to drive the brain to difficult-to-reach states. In this study, we identify increases in mean average and modal controllability in children with drug-resistant epilepsy compared to healthy controls. Using simulations, we purport that these changes may be a result of increased thalamocortical connectivity. At the node level, we demonstrate decreased modal controllability in the thalamus and posterior cingulate regions. In those undergoing resective surgery, we also demonstrate increased modal controllability of the resected parcels, a finding specific to patients who were rendered seizure free following surgery. Changes in controllability are a manifestation of brain network dysfunction in epilepsy and may be a useful construct to understand the pathophysiology of this archetypical network disease. Understanding the mechanisms underlying these controllability changes may also facilitate the design of network-focussed interventions that seek to normalise network structure and function. Children with drug-resistant epilepsy exhibit distinct structural connectomes and changes in network controllability from healthy controls, providing further insight into the pathophysiology of this disease. Grouting process in shield construction plays an important role in controlling surface deformation and ensuring structural stability. The soil in water-rich areas has large water content and strong self-stability, and inappropriate grouting parameters will result in surface settlement and slurry dilution. The purpose of this paper is to propose a calculation method for grouting parameters in water-rich areas to ensure grouting effect and reduce deformation. Firstly, based on the maximum balance condition of soil, this paper derived a calculation equation for optimum grouting pressure considering the self-stability of soil by introducing the safety factor. Then, it analyzed the cause of the slurry loss, and the method for determining each expansion coefficient taking into account the time-varying nature was given. Finally, it put forward a method for modifying the mix ratio of grouting slurry in water-rich areas. In addition, it analyzed the relationship between grouting parameters and surface settlement through an engineering example. The study shows that the stability of the tunnel is related to the nature of the soil and the size and depth of the tunnel. The grout loss caused by the slurry infiltration is the most serious, and the slurry with modified mix ratio has excellent and stable performance. The grouting parameter determination method proposed in this paper improves the accuracy of parameter selection and has smaller surface settlement, which provides theoretical guidance for grouting construction in water-rich areas. Background: Netrin-1 functions largely via combined receptors and downstream effectors. Evidence has shown that astrocytes express netrin-1 receptors, including DCC and UNC5H2. However, whether netrin-1 influences the function of astrocytes was previously unknown.Methods: Lipopolysaccharide was used to stimulate the primary cultured astrocytes; interleukin release was used to track astrocyte activation. In vivo, shRNA and netrin-1 protein were injected in the mouse brain. Infarct volume, astrocyte activation, and interleukin release were used to observe the function of netrin-1 in neuroinflammation and brain injury after middle cerebral artery occlusion.Results: Our results demonstrated that netrin-1 reduced lipopolysaccharide-induced interleukin-1β and interleukin-12β release in cultured astrocytes, and blockade of the UNC5H2 receptor with an antibody reversed this effect. Additionally, netrin-1 increased p-AKT and PPAR-γ expression in primary cultured astrocytes. In vivo studies showed that knockdown of netrin-1 increased astrocyte activation in the mouse brain after middle cerebral artery occlusion (p < 0.05). Moreover, injection of netrin-1 attenuated GFAP expression (netrin-1 0.27 ± 0.06 vs. BSA 0.62 ± 0.04, p < 0.001) and the release of interleukins and reduced infarct volume after brain ischemia (netrin-1 0.27 ± 0.06 vs. BSA 0.62 ± 0.04 mm3, p < 0.05).Conclusion: Our results indicate that netrin-1 is an important molecule in regulating astrocyte activation and neuroinflammation in cerebral ischemia and provides a potential target for ischemic stroke therapy. Aim: Blood–brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction is one of the hallmarks of ischemic stroke. USP14 has been reported to play a detrimental role in ischemic brain injury. However, the role of USP14 in BBB dysfunction after ischemic stroke is unclear. Methods: In this study, we tested the role of USP14 in disrupting BBB integrity after ischemic stroke. The USP14‐specific inhibitor IU1 was injected into middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) mice once a day. The Evans blue (EB) assay and IgG staining were used to assess BBB leakage 3 days after MCAO. FITC‐detran test was slected to examine the BBB leakage in vitro. Behavior tests were conducted to evaluate recovery from ischemic stroke. Results: Middle cerebral artery occlusion increased endothelial cell USP14 expression in the brain. Furthermore, the EB assay and IgG staining showed that USP14 inhibition through IU1 injection protected against BBB leakage after MCAO. Analysis of protein expression revealed a reduction in the inflammatory response and chemokine release after IU1 treatment. In addition, IU1 treatment was found to rescue neuronal loss resulting from ischemic stroke. Behavior tests showed a positive effect of IU1 in attenuating brain injury and improving motor function recovery. In vitro study showed that IU1 treatment could alleviate endothelial cell leakage induced by OGD in cultured bend.3 cells through modulating ZO‐1 expression. It has been reported that human visual perception and attention are altered when the hands are nearby. Previous studies indicate that placing hands near stimuli enhances a subject's temporal sensitivity. However, few researchers have investigated the effect of hand proximity on reproducing temporal duration. Moreover, the delayed attentional disengagement and enhanced magnocellular visual processing theories provide two distinct predictions of the hand proximity effect on reproduced duration. Delayed attentional disengagement near hands will cause prolonged reproductions, whereas enhanced magnocellular visual processing predicts more accurate reproduction in the peri-hand space. The current study is the first to show that a short temporal duration is reproduced for a longer period near hands than far from hands in the dual-responding-hand condition, and this hand-proximity effect is attenuated in the single-responding-hand condition. Metal ions (MIs) are the main sources of phytotoxicity of compost product, which can be absorbed by plants, thereby reducing the germination rate. The aim of this study was to analyze the interactional mechanism among MIs, microbial community, the structure of water soluble organic matter and phytotoxicity during composting. The results indicated that phytotoxicity was positively correlated with MIs (II) (As, Cd, Hg, Cr, Fe, Mn and Pb), and negatively correlated with MIs (I) (Mg, Zn, Ni and Cu). Furthermore, SO 4 2−, organic matter (OM), pH and four bacterial species significantly influenced the association of MIs to phytotoxicity. Additionally, molecular weight, protein-like substance and oxygen-containing functional groups relating to MIs (II) were significantly influenced by the nine bacterial species. Based on the response of physicochemical parameters on these key bacterial species, three possible mutual mechanisms were proposed using the structural equation model. Objective In epilepsy, asymmetries in the organization of mesial temporal lobe (MTL) functions help determine the cognitive risk associated with procedures such as anterior temporal lobectomy. Past studies have investigated the change/shift in a visual episodic memory laterality index (LI) in mesial temporal lobe structures through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) task activations. Here, we examine whether underlying task-related functional connectivity (FC) is concordant with such standard fMRI laterality measures. Methods A total of 56 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) (Left TLE [LTLE]: 31; Right TLE [RTLE]: 25) and 34 matched healthy controls (HC) underwent fMRI scanning during performance of a scene encoding task (SET). We assessed an activation-based LI of the hippocampal gyrus (HG) and parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) during the SET and its correspondence with task-related FC measures. Results Analyses involving the HG and PHG showed that the patients with LTLE had a consistently higher LI (right-lateralized) than that of the HC and group with RTLE, indicating functional reorganization. The patients with RTLE did not display a reliable contralateral shift away from the pathology, with the mesial structures showing quite distinct laterality patterns (HG, no laterality bias; PHG, no evidence of LI shift). The FC data for the group with LTLE provided confirmation of reorganization effects, revealing that a rightward task LI may be based on underlying connections between several left-sided regions (middle/superior occipital and left medial frontal gyri) and the right PHG. The FCs between the right HG and left anterior cingulate/medial frontal gyri were also observed in LTLE. Importantly, the data demonstrate that the areas involved in the LTLE task activation shift to the right hemisphere showed a corresponding increase in task-related FCs between the hemispheres. Significance Altered laterality patterns based on mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) pathology manifest as several different phenotypes, varying according to side of seizure onset and the specific mesial structures involved. There is good correspondence between task LI activation and FC patterns in the setting of LTLE, suggesting that reliable visual episodic memory reorganization may require both a shift in nodal activation and a change in nodal connectivity with mesial temporal structures involved in memory. Learning of prediction error (PE), including reward PE and risk PE, is crucial for updating the prediction in reinforcement learning (RL). Neurobiological and computational models of RL have reported extensive brain activations related to PE. However, the occurrence of PE does not necessarily predict updating the prediction, e.g., in a probability-known event. Therefore, the brain regions specifically engaged in updating the prediction remain unknown. Here, we conducted two functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments, the probability-unknown Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and the probability-known risk decision task (RDT). Behavioral analyses confirmed that PEs occurred in both tasks but were only used for updating the prediction in the IGT. By comparing PE-related brain activations between the two tasks, we found that the rostral anterior cingulate cortex/ventral medial prefrontal cortex (rACC/vmPFC) and the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) activated only during the IGT and were related to both reward and risk PE. Moreover, the responses in the rACC/vmPFC and the PCC were modulated by uncertainty and were associated with reward prediction-related brain regions. Electric brain stimulation over these regions lowered the performance in the IGT but not in the RDT. Our findings of a distributed neural circuit of PE processing suggest that the rACC/vmPFC and the PCC play a key role in updating the prediction through PE processing during decision making. Mechanical soil aeration is used for soil remediation at sites contaminated by volatile organic compounds. However, the effectiveness of the method is limited by low soil temperature, high soil moisture, and high soil viscosity. Combined with mechanical soil aeration, quicklime has a practical application value related to reinforcement remediation and to its action in the remediation of soil contaminated with volatile organic compounds. In this study, the target pollutant was trichloroethylene, which is a volatile chlorinated hydrocarbon pollutant commonly found in contaminated soils. A restoration experiment was carried out, using a set of mechanical soil-aeration simulation tests, by adding quicklime (mass ratios of 3, 10, and 20%) to the contaminated soil. The results clearly indicate that quicklime changed the physical properties of the soil, which affected the environmental behaviour of trichloroethylene in the soil. The addition of CaO increased soil temperature and reduced soil moisture to improve the mass transfer of trichloroethylene. In addition, it improved the macroporous cumulative pore volume and average pore size, which increased soil permeability. As soil pH increased, the clay mineral content in the soils decreased, the cation exchange capacity and the redox potential decreased, and the removal of trichloroethylene from the soil was enhanced to a certain extent. After the addition of quicklime, the functional group COO of soil organic matter could interact with calcium ions, which increased soil polarity and promoted the removal of trichloroethylene. The use of ceramsite to construct filtration systems (e.g., biofilters) is a common method for water treatment. To promote such applications, the development of low-cost, high-performance, and environmentally friendly ceramsites has received increasing attention from scientists, and a critical step in the development is the preparation of raw materials. As an inevitable and non-hazardous by-product during potable water production, drinking water treatment residue (DWTR) is typically recycled to make water treatment ceramsite to promote recycling in filtration systems. This study aims to bridge the knowledge gap regarding DWTR in making ceramsites for water treatment. The results suggest that the fabrication methods for DWTR-based ceramsite can be generally classified into sintering and non-sintering procedures. For the sintering method, owing to the heterogeneous properties (especially aluminum, iron, and calcium), DWTR has been applied as various sub-ingredients for raw materials preparations. In contrast, for the non-sintering method, DWTR is commonly applied as the main ingredient, and natural curing, physical crosslinking, and thermal treatment methods have been typically adopted to make ceramsite. However, DWTR-based ceramsites tend to have a high adsorption capability and favorable microbial effects to control different kinds of pollution (e.g., phosphorus, nitrogen, and organic matter). Future work is typically recommended to thoroughly evaluate the performance of DWTR-based ceramsite-constructed filtration systems to control water pollution concerning the making procedures, the potential to control pollution, the stability, and the safety of raw DWTR-based ceramsite, providing systematic information to design more proper planning for beneficial recycling. Urbanization has dramatically changed the quality and quantity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) fluxes in rivers, thereby affecting the diversity and lifestyle strategies of microbial communities. However, relationships between DOM molecular composition and microbial lifestyle strategies in effluent-dominated rivers are poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the variations in DOM structure and composition of an effluent-dominated river and further revealed how these changes alter the abundance and lifestyle strategies of microbial communities. Results demonstrated that macromolecular (MW > 35 kDa) humic-like substances constituted the major components of effluent-dominated riverine DOM. Also, due to the degradation of humic-like substances, the accumulation of protein-like substances was observed from upstream to downstream areas, corresponding to an apparent decrease in overall aromaticity. The abundance of bacterial, Actinobacteria, and eukaryotic was higher in the upstream and midstream areas but relatively lower in the downstream area. The response of bacterial and Actinobacteria communities to the changes in DOM composition was more prominent as compared to that of eukaryotic. Based on multivariate statistical analysis, the decrease in aromatic components (MW > 35 kDa) was mainly attributed to the degradation of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria (K-strategists), resulting in a decrease in their relative abundance along the river course. Proteins and polysaccharides (15 kDa < MW < 35 kDa, MW < 6 kDa) were more easily utilized by Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes (r-strategists), leading to an increase in their relative abundance. With the decrease of macromolecular humic-like substances and the increase of protein-like substances, river microbial communities shifted from K-strategists to r-strategists. Humic-reducing microorganisms (HRMs) could utilize humic substances (HS) as terminal electron mediator to promote the biodegradation of recalcitrant pollutants. However, the dynamics of HRMs during composting has not been explored. Here, high throughput sequencing technology was applied to investigate the patterns of HRMs during three composting systems. A total of 30 main genera of HRMs were identified in three composts, with Proteobacteria being the largest phylum. HRMs were detected with increased diversity and abundance and distinct patterns during composting, which were significantly associated with dissolved organic carbon, dissolved organic nitrogen and germination index. Regulating key physical-chemical parameters is a process control of HRMs community composition, thus promoting the redox capability of the compost. The redox capability of HRMs were strengthened during composting, suggesting that HRMs of the compost may play an important role on pollutant degradation of the compost or when they are applied to the contaminated soils. Microscale zero-valent iron (mZVI) is used as a catalyst for peroxide activation and, has attracted considerable attention for the degradation of organic contaminants. However, surface inherent oxide films impedes electron transfer in mZVI and decrease its activation efficiency. Herein, the mZVI surface was modified by sodium disilicate (Si-mZVIbm) using a mechanical ball-milling approach. The mechanochemically silicified mZVI enhanced the sulfamethazine removal rate by 2.9–23.8 fold in relation to unmodified ZVI; this rate increased with the Si/Fe molar ratio (0–8%). Reactive intermediates, including radicals and non-radicals, were efficiently generated via peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation over Si-mZVIbm both SO 4 •- and Fe(IV) contributed toward sulfamethazine removal. The excellent performance of PDS activation over Si-mZVIbm particles was attributed to the continuous generation of ferrous ions, which was due to the accelerated iron release and more effective Fe3+/Fe2+ cycles in the Si-mZVIbm/PDS system after silicification. There were significant differences in the Cr, mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), Zn, and arsenic (As) concentrations between soil samples from sanitary and non-sanitary landfills (NSLs) where HM contamination (PI = 10.9) was more obvious. As (CRA As = 2.35 × 10-4) and cadmium (Cd) (CRA Cd = 1.45 × 10-4) posed potential carcinogenic health effects. The soil Cd concentration had a significant negative correlation (r = -0.476**) with the landfill age. The soil As concentration had a significant positive correlation (r = 0.472**) with rainfall in NSLs. There were significant differences in the As (P = 0.042) and copper (Cu) (P = 0.042) concentrations between soil samples from the surrounding areas of MSWLs and the base where soil had higher HM concentrations. For the efficient prevention of HM ecological risk, a scientific site selection, undamaged coverage and anti-seepage systems, standardized management, and ongoing monitoring are required. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent threats aquatic environment and challenges engineered aquatic systems. In order to predict its environmental risk and guide the selection of suitable strategy and technology, understanding the removal efficiency and the fate of DOM along the treatment is helpful. Herein, to qualitatively and quantitatively estimate the composition of DOM in a full-scale WWTP in northern China, a combined approach of chromatography and spectroscopy was employed, and the contribution of size-dependent substructure to the global feature of DOM was discussed simultaneously. The results suggest that the WWTP could remove the free proteins of low molecular size by physical treatment with removal ratios of 46.4% and 41.0% for tyrosine and tryptophan, respectively, whereas humic-like and humic-protein complex accumulate in the effluent of treatment with a ratio of 40.6%. Biotreatment is of importance for changing the proportion of different types of DOM, especially for anaerobic tank and the anoxic tank, which results in the increase of humification. Size exclusive chromatography (SEC) coupled with multi emission maps identifies six DOM substructures. Two protein-like DOM were removed by the WWTP, except the composition with the molecular weight ranging from 0.75 to 0.25 kDa, whereas humic-like DOM with whole size range accumulated to varying extent. The standard deviation analysis states that the structure variation of bulk DOM in the WWTP is primarily contributed by the decrease of small-sized proteins and the increase of humic-like DOM. This study presents insight into the fate and behavior of DOM components during the full-scale WWTP treatment and provides guidelines for altering DOM-treating technologies. A diverse set of white matter connections supports seamless transitions between cognitive states. However, it remains unclear how these connections guide the temporal progression of large-scale brain activity patterns in different cognitive states. Here, we analyze the brain's trajectories across a set of single time point activity patterns from functional magnetic resonance imaging data acquired during the resting state and an n-back working memory task. We find that specific temporal sequences of brain activity are modulated by cognitive load, associated with age, and related to task performance. Using diffusion-weighted imaging acquired from the same subjects, we apply tools from network control theory to show that linear spread of activity along white matter connections constrains the probabilities of these sequences at rest, while stimulus-driven visual inputs explain the sequences observed during the n-back task. Overall, these results elucidate the structural underpinnings of cognitively and developmentally relevant spatiotemporal brain dynamics. Eli J. High gamma activity (HGA) of verbal-memory encoding using invasive-electroencephalogram has laid the foundation for numerous studies testing the integrity of memory in diseased populations. Yet, the functional connectivity characteristics of networks subserving these memory linkages remains uncertain. By integrating this electrophysiological biomarker of memory encoding from IEEG with resting-state BOLD fluctuations, we estimated the segregation and hubness of HGA-memory regions in drug-resistant epilepsy patients and matched healthy controls. HGA-memory regions express distinctly different hubness compared to neighboring regions in health and in epilepsy, and this hubness was more relevant than segregation in predicting verbal memory encoding. The HGA-memory network comprised regions from both the cognitive control and primary processing networks, validating that effective verbal-memory encoding requires integrating brain functions, and is not dominated by a central cognitive core. Organic amendments (OA) have been applied in many mercury (Hg)-polluted paddy soils to meet increasing food demands with scarce land resources. However, little is known on the effects of different OAs on Hg dissolution and the composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil pore waters, both of which may be associated with Hg mobility. Consequently, DOM composition and Hg release levels were investigated in soil pore waters after applying food waste compost (FC), fulvic acids (FA) and humic acids (HA) to Hg-polluted paddy soils. FA and HA treatments promoted increased abundances of humic- and fulvic-like substances in pore water DOM while FC amendment increased soluble microbial by-products. FA amendment and high levels of both HA and FC amendments greatly promoted Hg dissolution in pore waters that could be attributed to the complexation of Hg with different DOM components. However, among all DOM components, only UVA fulvic and visible humic-like substances were positively correlated with Hg release levels and total organic carbon. These results indicate that discrepant DOM compositions are induced by different OA. Further, these differences may be associated with differential Hg dissolution in pore waters. Consequently, FA amendment and high level of FC or HA amendments should be limited to reduce potential Hg release into pore waters. Abstract p -Arsanilic acid (p -ASA) is widely used as feed additives in animal production, and its transformation in environment media may cause arsenic contamination of soils and waters. It is essential to find a technology to effectively treat p -ASA, and meanwhile greatly decrease the mobility of the arsenic. Herein, we propose a disilicate-assisted Fe/Al electrolysis (D-FeAl-E) process for the degradation of p -ASA and the subsequent immobilization of inorganic arsenic. The results showed that, in the first stage of D-FeAl-E, namely the iron anode electrolysis process with disilicate, p -ASA was degraded by 92% under a near-neutral condition. The efficient degradation of p -ASA could be attributed to the disilicate-coordinated electrolytic ferrous ions, which activated dioxygen to produce more reactive oxygen species (e.g., O 2 −, H 2 O 2 and OH in this study) to attack p -ASA molecules. Following the first stage, the produced inorganic arsenic and other intermediates can be further removed in the second stage of D-FeAl-E process (the Al anode electrolysis), via the coagulation effect initiated by the electrogenerated hydroxylated aluminum species. Electrogenerated Al(III) ions hydrolyzed into positively charged monomeric/oligomeric Al species, which could result in the dissociation of disilicate-Fe(III) complexes, and the formation of hydroxides and oxo-bridging polynuclear entities for arsenic immobilization. Leaching stability tests suggested that the D-FeAl-E process was superior to the conventional electrocoagulation method with respect to the stability of the generated arsenic-containing solid sludge. The D-FeAl-E process is free of the use of chemical oxidants and coagulants, but it provides both oxidation and coagulation effects for the abatement of p -ASA during the two-stage electrolytic process. Neuroinflammation, considered as a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD), has been demonstrated to affect hippocampal neurogenesis and cognitive function. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a proinflammatory cytokine known to modulate neurogenesis. However, the mechanisms are still largely unknown. Here, we reported that IL-6 suppressed neurogenesis via a JAK2/STAT3 signaling in neural stem cells (NSCs). Importantly, we found that NeuroD1 (Neurogenic differentiation 1) gene expression, which drives NSCs neurodifferentiation, was regulated by TET3 and DNMT1 in a JAK2/STAT3-dependent manner. We further found that JAK2/STAT3 inhibition enhanced demethylation of NeuroD1 regulatory elements in IL-6-treated cells, which is related to the significant upregulation of TET3 expression as well as the decreased expression of DNMT1. Furthermore, Inhibiting JAK2/STAT3 significantly rescued the memory deficits and hippocampal neurogenesis dysfunction in APP/PS1 mice. Our data suggest that JAK2/STAT3 signaling plays a vital role in suppressing neurogenesis of NSCs exposed to IL-6 at the epigenetic level, by regulating DNA methylation/demethylation. Abstract The associations between electron shuttling of in situ organic matter and its microbial accessibility in natural soils remain elusive. In this study, through combining soil physical fractionation with incubation experiments, we show that the in situ solid-phase organic matter in soils is a heterogeneous pool with varied electron shuttling capacities due to the diverse soil organic matter protection mechanisms against microbial accessibility. The microbial accessibility of in situ solid-phase organic matter in soils largely acts as a crucial factor in determing the number of redox-active functional groups involved in shuttling electrons from microorganisms to Fe(III) oxides, and therefore the relationship between electron shuttling capacity of in situ solid-phase organic matter and its intrinsic chemical structures. This study was conducted to assess the roles of bacterial community in the dissolved organic matters (DOM) transformation during sludge composting. The relationship among the bacterial community, organic acids, diverse components of DOM as well as the indexes of the phytotoxin level and stability of materials was analyzed by regression and redundancy analysis. The results showed that there were significant correlations between the parameters for evaluating compost phytotoxicity and maturity including GI, C/N, SUVA 254 , SUVA 280 , E 253/203 , and A 240-400 , which led to a new index (PC1) by principal component analysis. PC1 was significantly affected by four components of DOM, acetic and tartaric acids that were correlated with the bacteria community shift, especially seven key bacteria. Based on structural equation modeling, the key bacteria with the ability to degrade tartaric acid exerted more important roles in regulating the transformation of DOM components, which was helpful for the stability and safety of compost. Abstract Whether crop intercropping can affect the uptake of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) by plant roots from soils is unclear. In this study, we compare the PAE uptake by plant roots between the wheat/maize intercropping and the wheat and maize monocropping in a field work. We show that the PAE bioconcentration factors of wheat and maize roots are remarkably higher under wheat/maize intercropping than under monocropping, indicating that intercropping may significantly increase the biouptake of PAEs as compared to monocropping. The wheat/maize intercropping can increase the electron transfer capacity (ETC) of water-extractable organic matter (WEOM) in soils by increasing the abundance of redox-active functional groups in WEOM. The ETC-enhanced WEOM may be an important reason for facilitating the reduction of ferric iron [Fe(III)] minerals to soluble ferrous iron [Fe(II)] by acting as electron shuttle, thus leading to the release of the PAEs originally occluded in Fe(III) minerals into soil pore water. The increased bioavailable PAEs distributed in the soil pore water under wheat/maize intercropping eventually result in the increase in the uptake of PAEs by plant roots from soils. Molecular characterization of landfill leachate dissolved organic matter (LDOM) is essential for developing effective processing techniques. However, the molecular selectivity of extraction method and ionization modes often leads to the bias of molecular characterization of LDOM. Here, seven representative sorbents were selected and electrospray ionization negative ion mode (ESI (−)) and positive ion mode (ESI (+)) Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) were used to investigate the molecular composition of different LDOM samples. Obvious sorbent selectivity during extraction procedure was observed, resulting in the underestimation of molecular diversity of LDOM from 32.7% to 69.3%. Totally, 14,000−18,000 unique molecules were obtained in a single sample, indicating the unprecedented molecular diversity of LDOM. Lignins, proteins and lipids are three major molecular groups in LDOM, and N or S containing molecules occupied 83%. Although much of total organic carbon was removed during biochemical treatment process, the molecular diversity of LDOM was not reduced because a considerable of bio-recalcitrant molecules was produced. The results uncover the sorbents selectivity and ionization modes selectivity in LDOM analysis and provided a comprehensive change of LDOM molecular composition during biochemical treatment, which benefits the development of accurate methods to remove organic carbon in landfill leachate. Sanitary landfill is the most prevalent and economic method for municipal solid waste disposal, and the resultant groundwater pollution has become an environmental problem due to leachate leakage. The pollution characteristics in groundwater near landfill sites have been extensively investigated, although the succession characteristics and driving mechanisms of microbial communities in leachate-contaminated groundwater and the sensitive microbial indicators for leachate leakage identification remain poorly studied. Herein, results showed that leachate leakage enhanced the microbial diversity and richness and transferred endemic bacteria from landfills into groundwater, producing an average decrease of 17.73% in the relative abundance of Proteobacteria. The key environmental factor driving the evolution of microbial communities in groundwater due to leachate pollution was organic matter, which can explain 16.13% of the changes in microbial community composition. The |βNTI| values of the bacterial communities in all six landfills were <2, and the assembly process of microbial communities was primarily dominated using stochastic processes. Leachate pollution changed the assembly mechanism, transforming the community assembly process from an undominated process to a dispersal limitation process. Leachate pollution reduced the efficiency and stability of microbial communities in groundwater, increasing the vulnerability of the stable microbial ecosystems in groundwater. Notably, microbial indicators are more sensitive to leachate leakage and could accurately identify landfills where leachate leakage occurred and other extraneous pollutants. The phylum Proteobacteria and mcrA could act as appropriate indicators for the identification of leachate leakage. Temporal lobe epilepsy tends to reshape the language system causing maladaptive reorganization that can be characterized by task-based functional MRI, and eventually can contribute to surgical decision making processes. However, the dynamic interacting nature of the brain as a complex system is often neglected, with many studies treating the language system as a static monolithic structure. Here, we demonstrate that as a specialized and integrated system, the language network is inherently dynamic, characterized by rich patterns of regional interactions, whose transient dynamics are disrupted in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Specifically, we applied tools from dynamic network neuroscience to functional MRI data collected from 50 temporal lobe epilepsy patients and 30 matched healthy controls during performance of a verbal fluency task, as well as during rest. By assigning 16 language-related regions into four subsystems (i.e. bilateral frontal and temporal), we observed regional specialization in both the probability of transient interactions and the frequency of such changes, in both healthy controls and patients during task performance but not rest. Furthermore, we found that both left and right temporal lobe epilepsy patients displayed reduced interactions within the left frontal 'core' subsystem compared to the healthy controls, while left temporal lobe epilepsy patients were unique in showing enhanced interactions between the left frontal 'core' and the right temporal subsystems. Also, both patient groups displayed reduced flexibility in the transient interactions of the left temporal and right frontal subsystems, which formed the 'periphery' of the language network. Importantly, such group differences were again evident only during task condition. Lastly, through random forest regression, we showed that dynamic reconfiguration of the language system tracks individual differences in verbal fluency with superior prediction accuracy compared to traditional activation-based static measures. Our results suggest dynamic network measures may be an effective biomarker for detecting the language dysfunction associated with neurological diseases such as temporal lobe epilepsy, specifying both the type of neuronal communications that are missing in these patients and those that are potentially added but maladaptive.
