The magnetic toroidal dipole moment, which is induced by a vortex-type spin texture, manifests itself in parity-breaking physical phenomena, such as a linear magnetoelectric effect and nonreciprocal transport. We elucidate that a staggered alignment of the magnetic toroidal dipole can give rise to spontaneous magnetization even under antiferromagnetic structures. We demonstrate the emergence of uniform magnetization by considering the collinear antiferromagnetic structure with the staggered magnetic toroidal dipole moment on a bilayer zigzag chain. Based on the model calculations, we show that the interplay between the collinear antiferromagnetic mean field and relativistic spin-orbit coupling plays an important role in inducing the magnetization. Non-coplanar spin textures such as magnetic vortices and skyrmions manifest themselves in unusual physical phenomena owing to their topologically nontrivial properties. Here, we investigate emergent multipole moments under vortex and skyrmion crystals in the centrosymmetric tetragonal system. Depending on the vorticity and helicity of the vortex or skyrmion, various multipole moments, including magnetic toroidal and electric toroidal multipoles, are induced on the atomic scale. In particular, the vortex and skyrmion spin textures consisting of multiple spin density waves give rise to density waves in terms of other multipole moments. A plethora of antiferromagnetic structures have been so far found in condensed matter physics, where the antiferromagnetic phase transition is characterized by symmetry lowering under the magnetic point group. Depending on the types of symmetry lowering, various cross-correlation phenomena, such as the anomalous Hall effect, magneto-electric effect, and magneto-piezoelectric effect, emerge below the critical temperature. We revisit a close relationship between the symmetry of the antiferromagnetic structures and cross-correlations based on the augmented multipoles consisting of electric, magnetic, magnetic toroidal, and electric toroidal multipoles with different spatial inversion and time-reversal parities. Objectives Purpose in life has been associated with diverse health outcomes; however, few studies have examined its associations with progressive motor decline in older adults. We tested if higher purpose would be associated with lower likelihood of incident parkinsonism as well as with lower levels and slower rates of increase in parkinsonian signs. Methods Participants were 2,626 older adults from the Rush Memory and Aging Project and Minority Aging Research Study followed for an average of 7.2 years (standard deviation [ SD ] = 4.6). Purpose was measured using the purpose in life subscale of the modified Ryff's and Keyes's measure of psychological well-being. Four parkinsonian signs (i.e. parkinsonian gait, rigidity, bradykinesia, and tremor) were assessed using the United Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale. We examined purpose with risk of developing incident parkinsonism using Cox proportional hazards models. We also used linear mixed-effect models to assess the association between purpose and parkinsonian sign trajectories. Results After including demographics, health conditions, and health behaviors in the model, for a 1- SD increase in purpose, the hazards ratio for incident parkinsonism was 0.88 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.80, 0.97). A 1- SD increase in purpose was associated with a −0.19 (95% CI −0.24, −0.15) point lower score in the global parkinsonian summary score at baseline but no differences in rate of change were evident. Discussion Higher purpose was associated with lower hazards of incident parkinsonism and lower levels of parkinsonian signs at baseline. Associations were seen even after adjustment for a wide range of covariates. Findings suggest higher purpose may contribute to maintenance of healthy physical function among older adults. Graphene oxide (GO) has received increasing attention in the life sciences because of its potential for various applications. Although GO is generally considered biocompatible, it can negatively impact cell physiology under some circumstances. Here, we demonstrate that the cytotoxicity of GO greatly varies depending on the cell adhesion states. Human HCT-116 cells in a non-adhered state were more susceptible to GO than those in an adherent state. Apoptosis was partially induced by GO in both adhered and non-adhered cells to a similar extent, suggesting that apoptosis induction does not account for the selective effects of GO on non-adhered cells. GO treatment rapidly decreased intracellular ATP levels in non-adhered cells but not in adhered ones, suggesting ATP depletion as the primary cause of GO-induced cell death. Concurrently, autophagy induction, a cellular response for energy homeostasis, was more evident in non-adhered cells than in adhered cells. Collectively, our observations provide novel insights into GO's action with regard to cell adhesion states. Because the elimination of non-adhered cells is important in preventing cancer metastasis, the selective detrimental effects of GO on non-adhered cells suggest its therapeutic potential for use in cancer metastasis. Summary: The pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner et Buhrer), is the causative agent of pine wilt disease. It is native to North America and has been devastating pine forests in East Asia and West Europe since its introduction. The pathogenic nematode is transmitted by cerambycid beetle adults of Monochamus alternatus Hope in East Asia and M. galloprovincialis (Olivier) in West Europe. Bursaphelenchus mucronatus Mamiya et Enda is widely distributed in Eurasia and has no or little pathogenicity to pine species. If hybrids between the two species are backcrossed with B. xylophilus nematodes repeatedly, a small proportion of B. mucronatus genes will be infused into B. xylophilus genome (introgression) and may lead to adaptation to locally harsh environments. Inoculation tests in this study revealed that two of eight hybrid-derived populations from crossing B. xylophilus and B. mucronatus caused pine seedling mortalities of 36-70%. The pathogenic hybrid-derived populations carried nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) of two species and B. xylophilus extra-nuclear genes, whereas non-pathogenic populations carried B. mucronatus rDNA and extranuclear genes of B. xylophilus or B. mucronatus. Thus, it is inferred that a gene or genes associated with pathogenicity are present in the nuclear genome of B. xylophilus. A laboratory experiment revealed that the pathogenic hybrid-derived population had as great an ability to board M. alternatus adults as the parental-lineage B. xylophilus isolate. Purpose: In laparoscopic surgery for upper gastric and esophagogastric junction (EGJ) cancer, it is important to achieve optimal exposure of the esophageal hiatus to secure an appropriate workspace. In recent years, hepatic left lateral segment (HLLS) inversion has been used to achieve an optimal surgical field. We present a simple technique to perform a modified HLLS inversion. Methods: As a simple modified method, suturing a 2-0 straight needle to the peritoneum of the round ligament and pulling it to the outside of the abdominal cavity, the falciform, left triangular, and coronary ligaments were dissected. The HLLS was inverted by moving it to the right through the space of the transected falciform ligament. By ligating the thread through the round ligament, the HLLS was sandwiched between the rest of the liver and abdominal wall. The short-term surgical outcomes of patient who underwent simple modified HLLS inversion were retrospectively reviewed. Results: This study investigated consecutive 24 patients who underwent laparoscopic proximal and total gastrectomies using the simple modified HLLS inversion technique between June 2021 and April 2022. This series of procedures could be completed in approximately 16 min. A Nathanson liver retractor was used in three patients due to difficulties in completing the HLLS inversion in our institution. Postoperative serum liver enzyme levels indicated there was a small effect on the liver. Conclusions: The simple modified HLLS inversion technique may be a safe and useful procedure and can provide an enhanced surgical field during laparoscopic surgery for upper gastric and EGJ cancers. The Myanmar–Thai border area has been the stage for charismatic monks revered by the populace following three religious traditions: the northern Thai tradition of khruba worship, Myanmar Buddhism in the peripheries, and Karen history of seeking variable millenarian leaders. Their practices are characterised by the construction of large Buddhist structures; the formation of a community of devotees; ascetic and/or moral practices; and a diversity of followers including ethnic minorities. The construction is enabled by donations from those wielding political and economic power, and through the massive labour of devotees. Minorities and impoverished populations provide the labour of devotion towards religious construction, gaining sustenance by the monk's compassion. This article examines the process of material construction of enormous architectural structures such as pagodas. This involves the labour of devotees, in this case namely the Karen minorities, which in turn expands the capacity for further merit-making and thereby increases the saints' charisma. The mhg1 (NCU02695/ ada-23) gene encodes the mitochondrial high-mobility group box (HMG-box or HMGB) protein in Neurospora crassa. The mhg1 KO strain (mhg1 KO) has mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) instability and a short lifespan; however, the function of MHG1 remains unclear. To investigate the role of this protein in the maintenance of mtDNA, domain deleted MHG1 proteins were expressed in the mhg1 KO strain, and their effects were analyzed. We identified two putative HMG-domains, HMGBI and HMGBII. Although deletion of the HMG-box did not abolish MHG1's mitochondrial localization, the mhg1 KO phenotype of a severe growth defect and a high sensitivity to mutagens could not be restored by introduction of HMG-box deleted mhg1 gene into the KO strain. It was indicated that recombinant full-length MHG1, i.e., mitochondrial targeting sequence (MTS) containing protein, did not exhibit explicit DNA binding, whereas the MHG1 protein truncated for the MTS sequence did in vitro by an electrophoretic mobility shift assay. Furthermore, recombinant MHG1 protein lacking MTS and HMG-domains, either HMGBI or HMGBII, had DNA affinity and an altered band shift pattern compared with MTS-truncated MHG1 protein. These results suggest that cleavage of MTS and appropriate DNA binding via HMG-domains are indispensable for maintaining mtDNA in N. crassa. • Two high-mobility group domains are required for the function of MHG1. • The two high-mobility group domains have different DNA-binding properties. • Neither high-mobility group domain recapitulates the DNA-binding properties of MHG1. • Cleavage of the MTS motif is necessary for the interaction between MHG1 and DNA. Background: Research has suggested optimism is associated with healthy aging and exceptional longevity, but most studies were conducted among non‐Hispanic White populations. We examined associations of optimism to longevity across racial and ethnic groups and assessed healthy lifestyle as a possible mediating pathway. Methods: Participants from the Women's Health Initiative (N = 159,255) completed a validated measure of optimism and provided other demographic and health data at baseline. We evaluated associations of optimism with increments in lifespan using accelerated failure time models, and with likelihood of exceptional longevity (survival to age ≥90) using Poisson regression models. Causal mediation analysis explored whether lifestyle‐related factors mediated optimism‐lifespan associations. Results: After covariate adjustment, the highest versus lowest optimism quartile was associated with 5.4% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 4.5, 6.4%) longer lifespan. Within racial and ethnic subgroups, these estimates were 5.1% (95%CI = 4.0, 6.1%) in non‐Hispanic White, 7.6% (95%CI = 3.6, 11.7%) in Black, 5.4% (95%CI = −0.1, 11.2%) in Hispanic/Latina, and 1.5% (95% CI = −5.0, 8.5) in Asian women. A high proportion (53%) of the women achieved exceptional longevity. Participants in the highest versus lowest optimism quartile had greater likelihood of achieving exceptional longevity (e.g., full sample risk ratio = 1.1, 95%CI = 1.1, 1.1). Lifestyle mediated 24% of the optimism‐lifespan association in the full sample, 25% in non‐Hispanic White, 10% in Black, 24% in Hispanic/Latina, and 43% in Asian women. Conclusions: Higher optimism was associated with longer lifespan and a greater likelihood of achieving exceptional longevity overall and across racial and ethnic groups. The contribution of lifestyle to these associations was modest. Optimism may promote health and longevity in diverse racial and ethnic groups. Chirality ubiquitously appears in nature; however, its quantification remains obscure owing to the lack of microscopic description at the quantum-mechanical level. We propose a way of evaluating chirality in terms of the electric toroidal monopole, a practical entity of time-reversal even pseudoscalar (parity-odd) objects reflecting relevant electronic wave functions. For this purpose, we analyze a twisted methane molecule at the quantum-mechanical level, showing that the electric toroidal monopoles become a quantitative indicator for chirality. In the twisted methane, we clarify that the handedness of chirality corresponds to the sign of the expectation value of the electric toroidal monopole and that the most important ingredient is the modulation of the spin-dependent imaginary hopping between the hydrogen atoms, while the relativistic spin–orbit coupling within the carbon atom is irrelevant for chirality. Optimism and purpose in life are associated with improved health outcomes. More information is needed on biological mechanisms, including immunosenescence. We investigated if psychological well-being is associated with healthier immunosenescence-related measures including naïve and terminally differentiated CD4+ and CD8+ T cell percentages, CD4+:CD8+, and cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgG response. Participants were adults over age 50 from the Health and Retirement Study. Optimism was measured using the Life Orientation Test Revised. Purpose in life was assessed using the subscale from the Ryff psychological well-being measure. We examined the cross-sectional associations of optimism and purpose in life with measures of T cell subsets using linear regression and with CMV IgG using ordered logit regression, controlling for potential confounding factors. The final analytic sample ranged from 7250 to 7870. After adjusting for sociodemographic factors, a 1-SD increment in optimism was associated with the percentage of naïve CD4+ T cells increasing by 0.6 (95%CI 0.2%, 1.0%). A 1-SD increment in purpose in life was associated with the percentage of naïve CD4+ T cells increasing by 0.9 (95%CI 0.5%, 1.3%) after adjusting for sociodemographic factors and the association was maintained after further adjustments for health conditions, depression, and health behaviors. For naïve CD8+ T cell percentages, CD4:CD8 ratios, and CMV IgG antibodies, associations were seen only in models that adjusted for age. No significant associations were seen in any models for the terminally differentiated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. We found associations of optimism and purpose in life with naïve CD4+ T cell percentages. • Optimism was associated with naïve CD4+T cells adjusting for sociodemographics. • Purpose was associated with naïve CD4+T cells in fully adjusted models. • There is a possible role of psychological well-being in immunosenescence. • Future studies should investigate these associations longitudinally. Ferroelectrics that display electrically invertible polarisation are attractive materials because of their potential for wide-ranging applications. To date, considerable effort has thus been devoted towards developing ferroelectric materials, particularly those comprising organic/inorganic compounds. In these systems, structural dynamics such as atomic displacement and reorientation of polar ions/molecules play a key role in the generation of reversible spontaneous polarisation. Although there are many reports concerned with organic/inorganic ferroelectrics, ferroelectrics based on coordination metal complexes have been largely unexplored despite their often unique electronic and spin state properties. In this feature article, we discuss recent progress involving coordination metal complex-based ferroelectrics where the reversible polarisation originates not only from structural dynamics (represented by proton transfer, molecular motion, and liquid crystalline behaviour) but also from electron dynamics (represented by electron transfer and spin crossover phenomena) occurring at the metal centre. Furthermore, unique synergy effects (i.e. magnetoelectric coupling) resulting from the structural and electron dynamics are described. We believe that this review pertaining to ferroelectric coordination metal complexes provides new insights for fabricating further advanced functional materials such as multiferroics and spintronics. Much attention has been paid on research and development on solid electrolytes for all-solid-state Li batteries. Although halide solid electrolytes such as Li3YCl6 and Li3InCl6 are promising due to fast Li ion conductivity and oxidation-resistant against positive electrode, a better understanding of their reactivity with atmospheric H2O is required for commercialization. In this study, the gas evolution tolerances of Li3YCl6 and Li3InCl6 were investigated. Temperature-programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD-MS) experiments at dew points below − 60 °C and gas detector tube experiments at dew points of − 30 °C both revealed significant differences in the H2O and HCl evolution behavior of Li3YCl6 and Li3InCl6. In TPD-MS, the onset temperature of HCl evolution for Li3YCl6 (~ 100 °C) was significantly lower than that for Li3InCl6 (~ 220 °C), indicating that Li3InCl6 solid electrolytes have superior gas evolution tolerance. This difference may be attributable to differences in the retention of H2O derived from the material synthesis stage and from contact with the atmosphere during the measurements. In particular, based on first-principles calculations, the low-temperature HCl evolution observed in Li3YCl6 was ascribed to the partial replacement of Cl− ions by OH− ions upon contamination with trace H2O. Because the heating and drying of solid electrolytes (including slurries) are inevitable processes during battery manufacturing, these findings can aid in the rational design of halide solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries. Low Mg diffusivity in solid-state oxides is an obstacle for the development of materials for Mg ion batteries, which are expected to have high capacity. In this study, we focused on NASICON-type and β-iron sulfate-type Mg2xHf1-xNb(PO4)3 that exhibit relatively high Mg ionic conductivity and investigated the Hf/Nb configuration and composition dependence of phase stability and ion conductivity by atomistic simulation using neural network potentials. The calculations show that the NASICON-type structure is slightly more stable and has higher Mg ionic conductivity than that of the β-iron sulfate-type. The effect of the Hf/Nb configuration was investigated and showed that the ordered stable structure had much lower ionic conductivity than the disordered structure. Furthermore, as the Mg ion concentration increased, the ionic conductivity increased monotonically at low concentrations but tended to converge to a constant value above a certain concentration. The saturation of the ionic conductivity despite increasing the Mg concentration may be due to the trapping effect of the Mg ions caused by the Hf vacancies as well as the Hf/Nb arrangement. An efficient algorithm for the rapid evaluation of electron repulsion integrals is proposed. The present method, denoted by accompanying coordinate expansion and transferred recurrence relation (ACE-TRR), is constructed using a transfer relation scheme based on the accompanying coordinate expansion and recurrence relation method. Furthermore, the ACE-TRR algorithm is extended for the general-contraction basis sets. Numerical assessments clarify the efficiency of the ACE-TRR method for the systems including heavy elements, whose orbitals have long contractions and high angular momenta, such as f - and g-orbitals. We propose using greedy and randomized Kaczmarz inner-iterations as preconditioners for the right-preconditioned flexible GMRES method to solve consistent linear systems, with a parameter tuning strategy for adjusting the number of inner iterations and the relaxation parameter. We also present theoretical justifications of the right-preconditioned flexible GMRES for solving consistent linear systems. Numerical experiments on overdetermined and underdetermined linear systems show that the proposed method is superior to the GMRES method preconditioned by NE-SOR inner iterations in terms of total CPU time. Anastomotic leak is a serious complication after esophagectomy. Endoscopic vacuum therapy (EVT) has become increasingly popular in treating upper gastrointestinal anastomotic leaks over the last years. We are here reporting our current complete experience with EVT as primary treatment for anastomotic leak following esophagectomy. This is a retrospective study analyzing all patients with EVT as primary treatment for anastomotic leak after esophagectomy between November 2016 and January 2020 at Karolinska University Hospital, Sweden. The primary endpoint was anastomotic fistula healing with EVT only. Twenty-three patients primarily treated with EVT after anastomotic leak following esophagectomy were included. Median duration of EVT was 17 days (range 5–56) with a median number of 3 (range 1–14) vacuum sponge changes per patient. A total number of 95 vacuum sponges were placed in the entire cohort, of which 93 (97.9%) were placed intraluminally and 2 (2.1%) extraluminally. The median changing time interval of sponges was 5 days (range 2–8). Successful fistula healing was achieved in 19 of 23 patients (82.6%), of which 17 (73.9%) fistulas healed with EVT only. There were 2 (8.7%) airway fistulas following EVT. No other adverse events occurred. Three patients (13%) died in-hospital. In conclusion EVT seems to be a safe and feasible therapy option for anastomotic leak following esophagectomy. The effect of EVT on the risk for development of airway fistulas needs to be addressed in future studies and until more data are available care should be taken regarding sponge positioning as well as extended treatment duration. We investigate the instability toward a skyrmion crystal under an in-plane magnetic field in centrosymmetric tetragonal magnets. By performing the simulated annealing for a spin model on the square lattice, we find that the interplay among the easy-plane two-spin anisotropic interaction, positive biquadratic interaction, and high-harmonic wave-vector interaction plays an important role in stabilizing the skyrmion crystal in the in-plane external magnetic field. The obtained skyrmion crystal consists of a pair of vortex and antivortex with opposite polarization in terms of the out-of-plane spin component. We also show that various multiple- Q states emerge depending on the model parameters. Our results indicate the possibility of topological spin textures in centrosymmetric tetragonal magnets with easy-plane magnetic anisotropy when the ground-state spin configuration at zero field is characterized by a single- Q in-plane cycloidal spiral state. • Skyrmion crystals are stabilized under an in-plane magnetic field in centrosymmetric tetragonal magnets. • The easy-plane anisotropic interaction plays an important role in inducing the skyrmion crystal. • Various multiple- Q states are also stabilized depending on the model parameters. We theoretically investigate the effect of external fields and currents on electronic nematic orderings based on the concept of augmented multipoles consisting of electric, magnetic, magnetic toroidal, and electric toroidal multipoles. We show the relation between rank-2 electric quadrupoles and the other multipoles, the former of which corresponds to the microscopic order parameter for the nematic phases. The electric (magnetic) field induces the rank-1 and rank-3 electric (magnetic) multipoles and rank-2 electric toroidal (magnetic toroidal) quadrupoles, while the electric current induces the rank-1 and rank-3 magnetic toroidal multipoles and rank-2 magnetic quadrupoles. We classify the active multipoles under magnetic point groups, which will be a reference to explore cross-correlation and transport phenomena in nematic phases. This document is an editorial introducing a themed collection in the journal Dalton Transactions on spin transition compounds. The collection aims to expand the field of spin transitions by including new research areas. Spin crossover (SCO), the phenomenon of crossover between spin isomers, has been observed in coordination complexes containing transition metal cations. The collection focuses on molecular spin transition phenomena, including SCO, valence tautomerism, electron transfer, and related topics. The editors hope to understand the current status of the field and develop its future prospects, as well as foster collaboration and attract young researchers. Purpose: Insertion of a nutritional jejunostomy in conjunction with esophagectomy is performed with the intention to decrease the risk for postoperative malnutrition and improve recovery without adding significant catheter-related complications. However, previous research has shown no clear benefit and there is currently no consensus of practice. Methods: All patients treated with esophagectomy due to cancer during the period 2006–2017 reported in the Swedish National Register for Esophageal and Gastric Cancer were included in this register-based cohort study from a national database. Patients were stratified into two groups: esophagectomy alone and esophagectomy with jejunostomy. Results: A total of 847 patients (45.27%) had no jejunostomy inserted while 1024 patients (54.73%) were treated with jejunostomy. The groups were comparable, but some differences were seen in histological tumor type and tumor stage between the groups. No significant differences in length of hospital stay, postoperative surgical complications, Clavien-Dindo score, or 90-day mortality rate were seen. There was no evidence of increased risk for significant jejunostomy-related complications. Patients in the jejunostomy group with anastomotic leaks had a statistically significant lower risk for severe morbidity defined as Clavien-Dindo score ≥ IIIb (adjusted odds ratio 0.19, 95% CI: 0.04–0.94, P = 0.041) compared to patients with anastomotic leaks and no jejunostomy. Conclusion: A nutritional jejunostomy is a safe method for early postoperative enteral nutrition which might decrease the risk for severe outcomes in patients with anastomotic leaks. For colors with the same luminance, increasing the saturation increases the color brightness. This phenomenon, known as the Helmholtz–Kohlrausch (H–K) effect, is a characteristic of human vision. In our estimations of the H–K effect in natural images, we found that the brightness‐to‐luminance (B/L) ratio decreases with increasing the lightness. However, the estimation was not enough for high lightness images containing a large amount of cyan. We, therefore, propose an estimation equation considering the decreasing B/L ratio with increasing the lightness. This estimation method takes into account the characteristic that the B/L ratio is 1.0 or higher. First, we create a function that reflects the decrease of the magnitude of the H–K effect with respect to the increase of the lightness at each hue. Then, the difference between the lightness and the standard lightness (the lightness used in Nayatani's estimation equation) is multiplied. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified in a subjective‐evaluation experiment of high‐lightness images containing a large amount of cyan. Moreover, the method improved the accuracy of the estimation, and we confirmed the decrease in B/L ratio with increasing the lightness by excluding B/L values below 1.0. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We theoretically investigate a new stabilization mechanism of a skyrmion crystal (SkX) in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets with magnetic anisotropy. By considering a trigonal crystal system without the horizontal mirror plane, we derive an effective spin model with an anisotropic Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida (RKKY) interaction for a multi-band periodic Anderson model. We find that the anisotropic RKKY interaction gives rise to two distinct SkXs with different skyrmion numbers of one and two depending on a magnetic field. We also clarify that a phase arising from the multiple-Q spin density waves becomes a control parameter for a field-induced topological phase transition between the SkXs. The mechanism will be useful not only for understanding the SkXs, such as that in Gd 2 PdSi 3 , but also for exploring further skyrmion-hosting materials in trigonal itinerant magnets. The geometries (i.e., dip angles) of active faults from the surface to the seismogenic zone are the most important factors used to evaluate earthquake ground motion, which is crucial for seismic hazard assessments in urban areas. In Osaka, a metropolitan city in Japan, there are several active faults (e.g., the Uemachi and Ikoma faults), which are inferred from the topography, the attitude of active faults in surface trenches, the seismic reflection profile at shallow depths (less than 2 km), and the three-dimensional distribution of the Quaternary sedimentary layers. The Uemachi and Ikoma faults are N–S-striking fault systems with total lengths of 42 km and 38 km, respectively, with the former being located ~ 12 km west of the latter; however, the geometries of each of the active faults within the seismogenic zone are not clear. In this study, to examine the geometries of the Uemachi and Ikoma faults from the surface to the seismogenic zone, we analyze the development of the geological structures of sedimentary layers based on numerical simulations of a two-dimensional visco-elasto-plastic body under a horizontal compressive stress field, including preexisting high-strained weak zones (i.e., faults) and surface sedimentation processes, and evaluate the relationship between the observed geological structures of the Quaternary sediments (i.e., the Osaka Group) in the Osaka Plain and the model results. As a result, we propose geometries of the Uemachi and Ikoma faults from the surface to the seismogenic zone. When the friction coefficient of the faults is ~ 0.5, the dip angles of the Uemachi and Ikoma faults near the surface are ~ 30°–40° and the Uemachi fault has a downward convex curve at the bottom of the seismogenic zone, but does not converge to the Ikoma fault. Based on the analysis in this study, the dip angle of the Uemachi fault zone is estimated to be approximately 30°–40°, which is lower than that estimated in the previous studies. Unusual magnetic textures can be stabilized in f-electron materials due to the interplay between competing magnetic interactions, complex Fermi surfaces, and crystalline anisotropy. Here we investigate CeAuSb2, an f-electron incommensurate antiferromagnet hosting both single-Q and double-Q spin textures as a function of magnetic fields (H) applied along the c axis. Experimentally, we map out the field-temperature phase diagram via electrical resistivity and thermal expansion measurements. Supported by calculations of a Kondo lattice model, we attribute the puzzling magnetoresistance enhancement in the double-Q phase to the localization of the electronic wave functions caused by the incommensurate magnetic texture. The magnetic, electronic, and structural properties of a quantum material are intrinsically linked. In f-electron systems, such as cerium-based materials, this interplay can be exceedingly complex. A preceding experiment suggested that a compound, which inhibits binding of the REST/NRSF segment to the cleft of a receptor protein mSin3B, can be a potential drug candidate to ameliorate many neuropathies. We have recently developed an enhanced conformational sampling method, genetic-algorithm-guided multi-dimensional virtual-system-coupled canonical molecular dynamics, and in the present study, applied it to three systems consisting of mSin3B and one of three compounds, sertraline, YN3, and acitretin. Other preceding experiments showed that only sertraline inhibits the binding of REST/NRSF to mSin3B. The current simulation study produced the spatial distribution of the compounds around mSin3B, and showed that sertraline and YN3 bound to the cleft of mSin3B with a high propensity, although acitretin did not. Further analyses of the simulation data indicated that only the sertraline–mSin3B complex produced a hydrophobic core similar to that observed in the molecular interface of the REST/NRSF-mSin3B complex: An aromatic ring of sertraline sunk deeply in the mSin3B's cleft forming a hydrophobic core contacting to hydrophobic amino-acid residues located at the bottom of the cleft. Skyrmion formation in centrosymmetric magnets without Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions was originally predicted from unbiased numerical techniques. However, no attempt has yet been made, by comparison to a real material, to determine the salient interaction terms and model parameters driving spin-vortex formation. We identify a Hamiltonian with anisotropic exchange couplings, local ion anisotropy, and four-spin interactions, which is generally applicable to this class of compounds. In the representative system Gd3Ru4Al12, anisotropic exchange drives a fragile balance between helical, skyrmion lattice (SkL), and transverse conical (cycloidal) orders. The model is severely constrained by the experimentally observed collapse of the SkL with a small in-plane magnetic field. For the zero-field helical state, we further anticipate that spins can be easily rotated out of the spiral plane by a tilted magnetic field or applied current. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solid electrolytes with high Mg-ion conductivity are required to develop solid-state Mg-ion batteries. The migration energies of the Mg2+ ions of 5,576 Mg compounds tabulated from the inorganic crystal structure database (ICSD) were evaluated via high-throughput calculations. Among the computational results, we focused on the Mg2+ ion diffusion in Mg0.6Al1.2 Si1.8O6, as this material showed a relatively low migration energy for Mg2+ and was composed solely of ubiquitous elements. Furthermore, first-principles molecular dynamics calculations confirmed a single-phase Mg2+ ion conductor. The bulk material with a single Mg0.6Al1.2Si1.8O6 phase was successfully prepared using the sol-gel method. The relative density of the sample was 81%. AC impedance measurements indicated an electrical conductivity of 1.6 × 10−6 Scm−1 at 500°C. The activation energy was 1.32 eV, which is comparable to that of monoclinic-type Mg0.5Zr2(PO4)3. Aims/Introduction: Pancreatic islets are heterogenous. To clarify the relationship between islet heterogeneity and incretin action in the islets, we studied gene expression and metabolic profiles of non‐large and enlarged islets of the Zucker fatty diabetes mellitus rat, an obese diabetes model, as well as incretin‐induced insulin secretion (IIIS) in these islets. Materials and Methods: Pancreatic islets of control (fa/+) and fatty (fa/fa) rats at 8 and 12 weeks‐of‐age were isolated. The islets of fa/fa rats at 12 weeks‐of‐age were separated into non‐large islets (≤200 μm in diameter) and enlarged islets (>300 μm in diameter). Morphological analyses, insulin secretion experiments, transcriptome analysis, metabolome analysis and oxygen consumption analysis were carried out on these islets. Results: The number of enlarged islets was increased with age in fatty rats, and IIIS was significantly reduced in the enlarged islets. Markers for β‐cell differentiation were markedly decreased in the enlarged islets, but those for cell proliferation were increased. Glycolysis was enhanced in the enlarged islets, whereas the tricarboxylic acid cycle was suppressed. The oxygen consumption rate under glucose stimulation was reduced in the enlarged islets. Production of glutamate, a key signal for IIIS, was decreased in the enlarged islets. Conclusions: The enlarged islets of Zucker fatty diabetes mellitus rats, which are defective for IIIS, show tumor cell‐like metabolic features, including a dedifferentiated state, accelerated aerobic glycolysis and impaired mitochondrial function. Purpose: To investigate the impact of hemodialysis on survival in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients.Methods: We studied 388 patients who underwent radical or partial nephrectomy for RCC at Toranomon Hospital from 2005 to 2013. Survival curves were drawn according to the Kaplan-Meier method and compared with the log-rank test. Multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazards regression model to assess the prognostic influence of hemodialysis on cancer-specific survival.Result: Of the 388 patients, 66 were on hemodialysis and 322 were not on dialysis. In the hemodialysis patients, incidental diagnosis of RCC was less frequent than in the non-dialysis patients. In addition, RCC was more likely to be multicentric (41% vs 1.2%), bilateral (14% vs 0.6%), and papillary (18% vs 7%) in hemodialysis patients. Moreover, tumors were smaller, the stage was lower, and the Fuhrman nuclear grade was higher in the patients on hemodialysis. The 5-year cancer-specific survival rate was 82.8% for hemodialysis patients and 93.5% for nondialysis patients. Multivariate analysis indicated that hemodialysis, stage, and Fuhrman nuclear grade were independent prognostic factors for RCC.Conclusions: This study suggested that hemodialysis was an independent prognostic factor for cancer-specific survival in RCC patients, along with the tumor stage and Fuhrman nuclear grade. Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis has seen rapid development in the last decade, as a novel biodiversity monitoring method. Previous studies have evaluated optimal strategies, at several experimental steps of eDNA metabarcoding, for the simultaneous detection of fish species. However, optimal sampling strategies, especially the season and the location of water sampling, have not been evaluated thoroughly. To identify optimal sampling seasons and locations, we performed sampling monthly or at two‐monthly intervals throughout the year in three dam reservoirs. Water samples were collected from 15 and nine locations in the Miharu and Okawa dam reservoirs in Fukushima Prefecture, respectively, and five locations in the Sugo dam reservoir in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. One liter of water was filtered with glass‐fiber filters, and eDNA was extracted. By performing MiFish metabarcoding, we successfully detected a total of 21, 24, and 22 fish species in Miharu, Okawa, and Sugo reservoirs, respectively. From these results, the eDNA metabarcoding method had a similar level of performance compared to conventional long‐term data. Furthermore, it was found to be effective in evaluating entire fish communities. The number of species detected by eDNA survey peaked in May in Miharu and Okawa reservoirs, and in March and June in Sugo reservoir, which corresponds with the breeding seasons of many of fish species inhabiting the reservoirs. In addition, the number of detected species was significantly higher in shore, compared to offshore samples in the Miharu reservoir, and a similar tendency was found in the other two reservoirs. Based on these results, we can conclude that the efficiency of species detection by eDNA metabarcoding could be maximized by collecting water from shore locations during the breeding seasons of the inhabiting fish. The superconductivity of alkali-metal intercalated BC2, MxBC2 (M = Li, Na, and K; x = 0.5–1.5), has been studied using first-principles calculations. The calculated critical temperature (Tc) values are substantially high at x = 0.5 (49.8–57.1 K), which are higher than those for MgB2 and close to those predicted for LixByCz compounds. The Tc values at x = 1.5 are comparatively low (0.6–5.6 K) and close to those for graphite intercalation compounds. No superconductivity is observed at x = 1.0 for all alkali metals. An analysis of the electronic structures reveals that at x = 0.5, the state at the Fermi energy includes the σ bond character. In contrast, at x = 1.5, the state includes only π bonds comprising pz orbitals of B and C atoms. The σ bond character is essential for attaining high Tc values because the σ bond couples strongly with the bending-like phonon modes of the BC2 layer. However, the π bond couples weakly with the stretching-like phonon modes due to the small overlap of the pz orbitals, which results in a relatively low Tc for the material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: During esophagectomy for esophageal cancer, meticulous attention is needed to prevent thermal injury to the vital organs, such as the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and tracheobronchus. In order to clarify the novel mechanism behind thermal injury induced by energy devices, we investigated the temperature of steam with the use of two different devices under wet and dry conditions.Methods: An ultrasonic device (Sonicision™) and a vessel sealing device (Ligasure™) were studied. We evaluated the temperature at the tip of the devices and the steam when the devices were activated under different grasping ranges, under four different combinations of device and muscle, and under four different wet/dry conditions (dry-dry, dry-wet, wet-dry, and wet-wet).Results: Although the maximum temperature of the devices was significantly higher with Sonicision™ than with Ligasure™, the maximum temperature of the steam was significantly higher with Ligasure™ than with Sonicision™ in almost all situations. At 1 mm away from Sonicision™, the critical temperature more than 60 °C was observed only when used with one-third grasping range under the wet-dry or the wet-wet conditions. In case of Ligasure™, high-temperature steam was observed when used with one-third grasping under the wet-dry or the wet-wet condition and two-third grasping under the dry-wet, the wet-dry, or the wet-wet condition. Under the wet condition, the emission of steam from the non-grasping part of Ligasure™ caused a spike in temperature that exceeded the critical temperature.Conclusion: We demonstrated that the use of energy devices under a wet condition generates steam from the non-grasping part of the devices. The temperatures of steam from Ligasure™ were significantly higher than that from Sonicision™. Summary: We consider solving large sparse symmetric singular linear systems. We first introduce an algorithm for right preconditioned minimum residual (MINRES) and prove that its iterates converge to the preconditioner weighted least squares solution without breakdown for an arbitrary right‐hand‐side vector and an arbitrary initial vector even if the linear system is singular and inconsistent. For the special case when the system is consistent, we prove that the iterates converge to a min‐norm solution with respect to the preconditioner if the initial vector is in the range space of the right preconditioned coefficient matrix. Furthermore, we propose a right preconditioned MINRES using symmetric successive over‐relaxation (SSOR) with Eisenstat's trick. Some numerical experiments on semidefinite systems in electromagnetic analysis and so forth indicate that the method is efficient and robust. Adsorption of H[sub 2], ²H[sub 2], O[sub 2], and CO on ZrB[sub 2](0001) was investigated by using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy. In hydrogen and oxygen adsorption, a strong loss peak appears in the specular spectra, showing the dissociative adsorption on the threefold hollow site. The vibrational frequency shifts toward higher energy with increase in oxygen coverage, while little changes in vibrational frequencies were observed in the hydrogen or deuterium adsorption. This means that the interaction between the adsorbates is stronger in oxygen adsorption than in hydrogen adsorption. The initial stage of CO adsorption shows two vibrational peaks, one of which corresponds to the atomic oxygen described above, the other is therefore the atomic carbon, showing dissociative adsorption. Background: Isolated radial head dislocation is a rare injury with an unclear pathomechanism, and the treatment is controversial. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the biomechanical contributions of the annular ligament, quadrate ligament, interosseous membrane, and annular ligament reconstructions to proximal radioulnar joint stability.Methods: Five fresh frozen cadaveric upper extremities were amputated above the elbow and solidly fixed on a customized jig. Radial head dislocation was reproduced by sequential sectioning of ligamentous structures and passive mobility testing. Radial head displacement during mobility testing was measured with an electromagnetic tracking device in three forearm rotation positions. The data were compared among different sectioning stages and between two types of simulated ligamentous reconstruction.Results: Lateral displacement of the radial head significantly increased in the neutral forearm rotation after annular ligament sectioning (46 ± 10%, p < 0.05). After quadrate ligament sectioning, we found significant posterior (67 ± 36%, p < 0.05) and lateral (74 ± 24%, p < 0.01) displacement in neutral forearm rotation and pronation. Significant radial head displacement was found in all directions and in all forearm positions after sequential sectioning of the proximal half of the interosseous membrane. Anatomical annular ligament reconstruction stabilized the proximal radioulnar joint except for anterior laxity in neutral forearm rotation (15 ± 6%, p < 0.05). The radial head with Bell Tawse procedure was significantly displaced in all directions.Conclusion: The direction of radial head instability varied depending on the degree of soft tissue sectioning and specific forearm rotation. Anterior radial head dislocation may involve more severe ligament damage than other types of dislocation. Anatomical annular ligament reconstruction provided multidirectional radial head stability. Background: Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) paralysis is a frequently observed complication after esophagectomy, and thermal injury is considered to be one of the causes. The difference in the lateral thermal spread associated with the grasping range of various energy devices remains unknown.Methods: Ultrasonic devices (Harmonic® HD1000i and Sonicision™) and a vessel-sealing device (Ligasure™) were studied. We evaluated the temperature of these devices, the activation time required, and the thermal spread on porcine muscle when the devices were used with different grasping ranges (thermal spread study). In addition, we evaluated the influence of thermal spread by short grasping use of the energy devices on the viability of RLN in a live porcine model (NIM study).Results: In the thermal spread study, the temperature of the ultrasonic devices lowered as grasping range increased, whereas the highest temperature of Ligasure was observed when used with two-thirds grasping. The activation time of ultrasonic devices became longer as grasping range increased, whereas the grasping range did not influence the activation time of Ligasure. Thermal spreads 1 mm from the energy devices were unaffected by the grasping ranges. Although the temperature of the Ligasure was lower than that of the ultrasonic devices, thermal spread by Ligasure was significantly greater than that induced by the ultrasonic devices. In the NIM study, the activation of the Sonicision with one-third grasping range did not cause EMG changes at distances of up to 1 mm from the RLN, whereas applying Ligasure with a one-third grasping range 1 mm away from the RLN led to a critical result.Conclusions: The grasping range did not influence the thermal spread induced by the energy devices. In Thailand, from the beginning of this century, policies on aging, health promotion reform toward enlightening the public, and administrative decentralization have been taking place, leading to the reinforcement of biopolitics in elderly care. "Community" became a useful locus and tool to carry out governance of health and elderly care. At the same time, within state-initiated programs there is local agency at work, which mobilizes existing social networks while allowing the formation of new connections based on the old. Drawing upon observations from fieldwork in a suburban district in Chiang Mai Province, I argue that biosocial communality emerges from the interaction between the administration and local agents, and demonstrate how this operates by acting on the interface of the family and the community. I first look into how policies of health and elderly care have made use of the community or the discourse thereof. Then I introduce the case of a specific subdistrict to see how such top-down governance actually operates on the ground, how local networks can be reactivated, and, ultimately, how we find, among the participating elderly and caregivers, emerging biosocial communality at the interface of the family and community. An enhanced‐sampling method termed multidimensional virtual‐system coupled canonical molecular dynamics (mD‐VcMD) method is developed. In many cases, generalized‐ensemble methods realizing enhanced sampling, for example, adaptive umbrella sampling, apply an effective potential, which is derived from temporarily assumed canonical distribution as a function of one or more arbitrarily defined reaction coordinates. However, it is not straightforward to estimate the appropriate canonical distribution, especially for cases applying multiple reaction coordinates. The current method, mD‐VcMD, does not rely on the form of the canonical distribution. Therefore, it is practically useful to explore a high‐dimensional reaction‐coordinate space. In this article, formulation of mD‐VcMD and its evaluation with the simple molecular models consisting of three or four alanine peptides are presented. We confirmed that mD‐VcMD efficiently searched 2D and 3D reaction‐coordinate spaces defined as interpeptide distances. Background: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the most troublesome complications in colorectal surgery. Recently, near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging has been used intraoperatively to detect sentinel lymph nodes and visualize the blood supply at the region of interest (ROI). The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of visualization and quantification of bowel perfusion around the anastomosis using NIRF system in predicting AL. Methods: A prospective study was conducted on patients who had laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer at our institution. Perfusion of the anastomosis was evaluated with NIRF imaging after intravenous injection of indocyanine green (ICG). The time course of fluorescence intensity was recorded by an imaging analyzer We measured the time from ICG injection to the beginning of fluorescence (T0), maximum intensity (Imax), time to reach Imax (Tmax), time to reach Imax 50% ( T max 1 / 2 ) and slope (S) after the anastomosis. Results: Tumor locations were as follows; cecum: 2, ascending colon: 2, transverse colon: 7, descending colon: 1, sigmoid colon: 2, rectosigmoid colon: 3 and rectum: 6 (one case with synchronous cancer). All operations were performed laparoscopically. Four patients were diagnosed with or suspected to have AL (2 patients with grade B anastomotic leakage after low anterior resection, 1 patient with minor leakage in transverse colon resection and 1 patient needing re-anastomosis intraoperatively in transverse colon resection). T0 was significantly longer in the AL group than in patients without AL (64.3 ± 27.6 and 18.2 ± 6.6 s, p = 2.2 × 10−3). Conclusions: Perfusion of the anastomosis could be successfully visualized and quantified using NIRF imaging with ICG. T0 might be a useful parameter for prediction of AL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plasma levels of chemerin, an adipocytokine produced from the adipose tissues and liver, are associated with metabolic syndrome and coronary artery disease (CAD). Chemerin and its analog, chemerin-9, are known to bind to their receptor, ChemR23. However, whether chemerin and chemerin-9 affect atherogenesis remains to be elucidated. We investigated the expression of chemerin and ChemR23 in human coronary arteries and cultured human vascular cells. The effects of chemerin and chemerin-9 on atheroprone phenomena were assessed in human THP1 monocytes, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and human aortic smooth muscle cells (HASMCs) and aortic lesions in Apoe-/- mice. In patients with CAD, a small amount of ChemR23, but not chemerin, was expressed within atheromatous plaques in coronary arteries. Chemerin and ChemR23 were expressed at high levels in THP1 monocytes, THP1-derived macrophages, and HUVECs; however, their expression in HASMCs was weak. Chemerin and chemerin-9 significantly suppressed the tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a)-induced mRNA expression of adhesion and pro-inflammatory molecules in HUVECs. Chemerin and chemerin-9 significantly attenuated the TNF-a-induced adhesion of THP1 monocytes to HUVECs and macrophage inflammatory phenotype. Chemerin and chemerin-9 suppressed oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL)-induced macrophage foam cell formation associated with down-regulation of CD36 and up-regulation of ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1). In HASMCs, chemerin and chemerin-9 significantly suppressed migration and proliferation without inducing apoptosis. In the Apoe-/- mice, a 4-week infusion of chemerin-9 significantly decreased the areas of aortic atherosclerotic lesions by reducing intraplaque macrophage and SMC contents. Our results indicate that chemerin-9 prevents atherosclerosis. Therefore, the development of chemerin analogs/ChemR23 agonists may serve as a novel therapeutic target for atherosclerotic diseases. The Japanese Surveillance Committee conducted a second nationwide surveillance of antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of uropathogens responsible for acute uncomplicated cystitis (AUC) in premenopausal patients aged 16–40 years old at 31 hospitals throughout Japan from March 2015 to February 2016. In this study, the susceptibility of causative bacteria (Escherichia coli , Klebsiella pneumoniae , Staphylococcus saprophyticus) for various antimicrobial agents was investigated by isolation and culturing of organisms obtained from urine samples. In total, 324 strains were isolated from 361 patients, including E. coli (n = 220, 67.9%), S. saprophyticus (n = 36, 11.1%), and K. pneumoniae (n = 7, 2.2%). The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 20 antibacterial agents for these strains were determined according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) manual. At least 93% of the E. coli isolates showed susceptibility to fluoroquinolones and cephalosporins, whereas 100% of the S. saprophyticus isolates showed susceptibility to fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides. The proportions of fluoroquinolone-resistant and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli strains were 6.4% (13/220) and 4.1% (9/220), respectively. The antimicrobial susceptibility of K. pneumoniae was retained during the surveillance period, while no multidrug-resistant strains were identified. In summary, antimicrobial susceptibility results of our second nationwide surveillance did not differ significantly from those of the first surveillance. This study aims to clarify risk factors of POUR and to estimate the appropriate timing of urethral catheter removal. >bold<>italic/italic<>/bold< Between September and December 2014, a retrospective cohort study was conducted on 120 patients who underwent epidural anesthesia and major abdominal surgery. To observe trends in incidence of POUR, we analyzed the order and interval of removal of epidural and urethral catheters using Cochran-Armitage trend test. >bold<>italic/italic<>/bold< In this study, 40 patients were diagnosed with POUR (33.3%). Median removal of epidural catheters was 4 postoperative days in the POUR group and 3.5 postoperative days in the non-POUR group (>italic/italic< = 0.04). When the urethral catheter was removed before epidural catheter, incidence of POUR was comparatively greater (>italic/italic< < 0.001). There were no statistical differences in surgical fields, operation approach, epidural catheter levels, or epidural opioid use. Abstract Hypoxic water masses are usually formed in the bottom layer of stratified water columns. However, we found that hypoxia was formed throughout the water column in a well-mixed macrotidal estuary, the Rokkaku River Estuary, Japan. There was a spring-neap variation in the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration where hypoxia developed during spring tides. Minimum DO concentration was observed 1 or a few days after the spring tide. When hypoxia developed, all the water column from bottom to surface became hypoxic (<2 mg l−1 or < 30% saturation). The hypoxic water mass was associated with the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM). Oxygen demand of water in this area was very large (>2 mg l−1 day−1). Potential oxygen consumption by microorganisms was positively correlated with turbidity. Concentration of suspended solid (SS) at the ETM exceeded 1000 mg l−1. Furthermore, particulate organic carbon (POC) concentration in the estuary increased in spring tides. C/N ratio and δ13C of organic matter suggested that POC was transported from the sea into the estuary. These results suggest that the active resuspension of organic matter caused by the strong tidal current during spring tides enhanced the respiratory activity of microorganisms and the main source of the organic matter was detrital material from the sea. Such a large amount of organic matter should fuel microbial respiration effectively. Since microbial oxygen consumption was larger than the oxygen supply from the water surface even in the well mixed condition, a hypoxic water mass was formed in this estuary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Surgical techniques for Spiegel lobectomy remain technically difficult because of its deep anatomical location. Laparoscopic Spiegel lobectomy has not yet been standardized or widely reported. In the current study, we introduce technical improvements, including the liver hanging maneuver, to laparoscopic Spiegel lobectomy. Additionally, we demonstrate the safety and feasibility of this procedure. Materials and Surgical Technique: We performed consecutive laparoscopic Spiegel lobectomy on six patients: five with hepatocellular carcinoma and one with colorectal liver metastasis. As preparation before liver parenchymal resection, necessary and sufficient mobilization of the Spiegel lobe was performed. A few Glissonian pedicles of the Spiegel lobe were exposed from the hilar plate and divided to reduce the inflow to the Spiegel lobe. After that, vessel tape was used in the hanging maneuver. The tape was pulled forward to give the cutting plane moderate tension during liver parenchymal resection. Lifting this tape provided better exposure for determining the correct cutting plane during liver parenchymal transection. The median operation time was 207 min (range, 147–240 min) and the median intraoperative blood loss was 35 mL (range, 15–85 mL). There were no severe postoperative complications. Discussion We safely performed laparoscopic Spiegel lobectomy. To maintain a sufficient surgical view, especially during liver parenchymal resection, the hanging maneuver may be a useful technique.
