Radio-frequency (RF) cavities, previously employed in particle physics, quantum computing, and gravitational wave research, offer unique advantages in terms of sensitivity and non-invasiveness as a method of sensing motion in both macroscopic and microscopic systems. This research aims to address how an RF cavity can effectively detect and characterize the low-frequency vibratory motion of a room-temperature mm-scale levitated particle. In this case, the particle in question is a diamagnetically levitated slab of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. Cavity-based identification of the slab's rigid-body modes is substantiated by calculations of the force acting on the particle and validated through slow-motion video object tracking. We find that this system can accurately measure oscillations in all six center-of-mass degrees of freedom. Calculations indicate that this system could potentially detect forces on the scale of tens of femto-Newtons and center of mass displacements of less than 10 nm. This work provides a non-invasive method of conducting position and vibration measurements in the field of levitodynamics without the ultra-cold temperatures or bulky precision laser setups that superconducting quantum interference devices and conventional interferometric methods utilize. Photodetachment spectra of anionic species provide significant insights into the energies and nature of ground and excited states of both the anion and resultant neutral molecules. Direct detachment of the excess electron to the continuum may occur via formally allowed or forbidden transitions (perhaps as the result of intensity borrowing through vibronic coupling). However, alternate indirect pathways are also possible and often overlooked. Here, we report a two-dimensional photoelectron spectral study, combined with correlated electronic structure calculations, to elucidate the nature of photodetachment from NiO2−. The spectra are comprised of allowed and forbidden transitions, in excellent agreement with previously reported slow electron velocity mapped imaging spectra of the same system, which were interpreted in terms of direct detachment. In the current work, the contributions of indirect processes are revealed. Measured oscillations in the branching ratios of the spectral channels clearly indicate non-direct detachment processes, and the electronic structure calculations suggest that excited states of the appropriate symmetry and degeneracy lie slightly above the neutral ground state. Taken together, the results suggest that the origin of the observed forbidden transitions is the result of anion excited states mediating the electron detachment process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Irruptive forest insects are a leading biotic disturbance across temperate and boreal forests. Outbreaks of forest insects are becoming more frequent and extensive due to anthropogenic drivers (e.g. climate and land‐use), perhaps increasing the likelihood that forests will experience multiple insect‐caused disturbances. Across the fire‐prone Douglas‐fir forests of western North America, recent outbreaks of the western spruce budworm and Douglas‐fir beetle have impacted large expanses of forests, with a higher degree of overlap than expected in some ecoregions. Outbreaks of both insects are positively related to host availability and exhibit density‐dependent population dynamics that are affected by climate and weather. Here, we leverage data from aerial detection surveys, estimates of host availability, climate and weather, and categorized fire severity to describe the spatial overlap between western spruce budworm and Douglas‐fir beetle and assess: (1) how climate and host availability influence the biogeography of outbreaks; (2) how weather incites outbreaks; and finally, (3) how prior disturbances (fire and biotic) affect the subsequent outbreak likelihood of western spruce budworm and Douglas‐fir beetle. Models demonstrate that western spruce budworm and Douglas‐fir beetle share similar predisposing drivers of outbreaks. Outbreaks of both insects were more likely to occur following warm weather, but only beetle outbreaks were more likely following drought. When controlling for differences in outbreak distribution and inciting factors, results indicate that both prior fire and interspecific disturbance altered the likelihood of subsequent insect‐caused disturbance. Specifically, Douglas‐fir beetle outbreaks were more likely to occur for several years following low severity fire, but less likely otherwise. Prior defoliation, especially longer duration defoliation, increased the likelihood of beetle outbreak within stands and across the landscape. On the contrary, western spruce budworm outbreaks were less likely to occur following fire, while prior beetle activity dampened budworm outbreak likelihood for several years, and then eventually increased outbreak likelihood. Synthesis: Biotic–biotic disturbance interactions have the potential to amplify the incidence of insect‐caused disturbance across subcontinental scales. The naked mole‐rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is a unique model mammal in which to study socially induced inhibition of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis. Naked mole‐rat groups exhibit a high degree of reproductive bias in which breeding is restricted to one female (the queen) and one male, with subordinate non‐breeding colony members rarely, if ever, having the opportunity to reproduce due to a dysfunctional HPG axis. It is posited that aggression directed at subordinates by the queen suppresses reproduction in these subordinates, yet the underlying physiological mechanisms causing this dysfunction are unknown. This study aimed to investigate the possible factors contributing to the dysfunction of the HPG axis in subordinate female naked mole‐rats with a specific focus on the role of ovarian feedback and stress‐related factors such as circulating glucocorticoid and endogenous opioid peptides. The results showed that stress‐related factors appear to not mediate the suppression of reproductive function in subordinate female naked mole rats. Indeed, in some cases, the activation of the stress axis may lead to reproductive activation instead of deactivation. At the same time, the role of ovarian sex steroid feedback in reproductive suppression is likely limited and not clearly delineated. This study highlights the need for detailed studies to elucidate the mechanism of reproductive suppression in this unique model mammalian species which may shed light on, and reveal novel mechanisms, in the social regulation of reproduction. Objective The primary objective was to determine if vaginal progesterone following cerclage for cervical length <10 mm or cervical dilation in patients without a history of spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) decreased the risk of preterm birth at <34 weeks' gestation compared with cerclage alone. Secondary objectives were to determine if vaginal progesterone following cerclage (1) decreased the risk of preterm birth at <24, <28, and <37 weeks' gestation and (2) increased the latency period from cerclage placement to delivery compared with treatment with cerclage alone. Study Design Multicenter retrospective cohort study from 2015 to 2020 of singleton pregnancies, without prior sPTB, who had cerclage placement <24 weeks' gestation for cervical length <10 mm or cervical dilation. Exposure defined as cerclage plus vaginal progesterone postoperatively (dual therapy) and unexposed as cerclage alone (monotherapy), based on surgeon preference. Results We included 122 patients, 78 (64%) treated with dual therapy and 44 (36%) treated with monotherapy. In the crude analysis, dual therapy was associated with a lower risk of delivery at <28 weeks' gestation (13%) compared with monotherapy (34%; crude risk ratio: 0.38 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.19–0.75]). When adjusted for preoperative vaginal progesterone, results were attenuated (adjusted risk ratio: 0.45 [95% CI: 0.20–1.01]). In both the crude and adjusted analyses, the risk of sPTB was not statistically different at <24, <34 or <37 weeks' gestation. Dual therapy was associated with a greater pregnancy latency from cerclage to delivery (16.3 vs. 14.4 weeks; p = 0.04), and greater gestational age at delivery (37.3 vs. 35.8 weeks' gestation; p = 0.02) compared with monotherapy. Conclusion While not statistically significant, the risk of sPTB was lower at all gestational ages studied in patients treated with dual therapy compared with monotherapy. Dual therapy was associated with longer pregnancy latency and greater gestational age at delivery compared with monotherapy. Sibling of children with a life-limiting condition (LLC) face challenge. Yet there is relatively little research specifically investigating the psychosocial impact on siblings living with a child with an LLC. A qualitative participatory methodology helped explore the experiences of nine siblings, aged 6–16, of children with an LLC: their perception of their wellbeing, coping strategies and needs, in England, UK. Data were gathered through an amalgamation of creative art activity and focus group audiotaped discussion. Three themes were identified; ‘dealing with uncertainty and stress’; ‘coping with being different’, and ‘spill over between home and school’. Despite the adversity, these children experienced, because of caring responsibilities and worry about their sibling with LLC, they demonstrated resilience and maturity. They did, however, experience schooling challenges and found making friends difficult. They felt school could help if teacher awareness was promoted and they had assistance in connecting to peers with shared life experiences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research partnerships between Tribal Nations and rural colleges and universities can support rural development and strengthen Tribal Nation building through reclamation of economic, political, cultural, and social affairs. However, Tribal Nation–University relationships have received little attention in rural sociology. While scholars identify best practices for research engagement in light of colonial harms, the ideal visions that Tribally and university‐affiliated people have for research partnerships and the barriers to achieving those ideals are poorly understood. Without identifying these visions and barriers, we risk making wrong assumptions about each party's needs and cannot implement appropriate policies. Semi‐structured interviews with Tribally‐affiliated (n = 20) and university‐affiliated (n = 20) people in rural southeastern Idaho suggest, contrary to literature on best practices for collaborative research, that participants in both groups viewed what we term “Tribally‐responsive research engagement” as ideal, though few projects met this goal. Tribally‐responsive research directly addressed Tribal priorities but did not necessarily involve close collaboration. The University's failure to acknowledge past or colonial harms, university‐affiliated researchers' historicization of those harms, and negative Native student experiences reinforced distrust, limiting desired research engagement. In sum, Tribally‐responsive research engagement could strengthen Native Nation building, but requires universities to acknowledge harms, create more welcoming campus environments, and prioritize Tribal benefits in research. Accurate measurement of metal concentrations in soil and water is vital for healthy crop production and decision making for environmental surveys. While there are a multitude of laboratory‐based soil analysis methods, such as inductively coupled plasma‐optical emission spectroscopy (ICP‐OES), flame emission spectrometry, and atomic absorption spectroscopy, most are time and resource intensive. Additionally, there is a lack of information for rapid analysis of elements for aqueous soil extractions. The goal of this research is to establish elemental correlations between portable X‐ray fluorescence (pXRF) measurements of Mehlich III soil extractions and traditional elemental measurements via ICP‐OES. We hypothesize that certain metals can be accurately measured in aqueous soil extraction solutions by pXRF to the same degree as they are measured by ICP‐OES. To test this hypothesis, Mehlich III and 2% nitric acid solutions with known elemental concentrations were analyzed via ICP‐OES and pXRF. Soil samples extracted using Mehlich III were compared between ICP‐OES and pXRF to verify correlations. High correlations were found for As, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, V, and Zn in both the Mehlich III and 2% nitric acid solutions at concentrations between 5 and 85 mg L−1. P, S, and Si did not show high correlations at concentrations <100 mg L−1. These results indicate that between 5 and 85 mg L−1, pXRF analysis of aqueous solutions and soil extractions is a reliable technique; however, at low concentrations (i.e., <5 mg L−1 for metals and <100 mg L−1 for P and S), pXRF is not well suited. Background: The Covid Connected Care Center (C4), a low-barrier telephone nurse hotline, was developed at an academic medical center to increase access to healthcare information and services across the state of Oregon, including to those without a usual source of care. Other studies have demonstrated that telephone triage services can positively influence health behaviors, but it is not known how this effect is maintained across racial/ethnic groups. The objective of this study was to show that the C4 reached throughout the state of Oregon, was valuable to callers, and that recommendations given affected callers' subsequent health-related behaviors. Methods: This mixed-methods study, informed by the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Addoption, Implementation and Maintenance) framework, assessed caller demographics and clinical care from March 30 2020 until September 8, 2021. Descriptive statistics, multivariable risk models and Zou's modified Poisson modeling were applied to electronic health record and call system data; An inductive approach was used for patient and staff experience surveys and semi-structured interviews. Approval was obtained from the OHSU Institutional Review Board (Study 00021413). Results: 145,537 telephone calls and 92,100 text-based contacts (61% and 39%, respectively) were included. Callers tended to not have a usual source of primary care and utilized recommended services. Emergency department utilization was minimal (1.5%). Racial or ethnic disparities were not detected in the recommendations, but Black (RR 0.92, CI 0.86–0.98) and Multiracial (RR 0.90 CI 0.81–0.99) callers were less likely than non-Hispanic white callers to receive a COVID-19 test. Participants in the post-call survey (n = 50) would recommend this service to friends or family. Interviews with callers (n = 9) revealed this was because they valued assistance translating general recommendations into a personalized care plan. C4 staff interviewed (n = 9) valued the opportunity to serve the public. The C4 was a trusted resource to the public and reached the intended audiences. However, disparities in access to COVID-19 testing persisted. Conclusions: Nursing triage hotlines can guide caller behavior and be an effective part of a robust public health information infrastructure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The establishment of a peripheral ECMO circuit can lead to significant arterial and venous complications in 10–30% of patients. Vascular complications, particularly acute limb ischemia, are associated with worsening overall outcomes. Limb ischemia occurs significantly more frequently in the early stages of VA ECMO than in VV ECMO. Mechanisms of limb ischemia include arterial obstruction, cannulation injury, loss of pulsatile flow, thromboembolism, venous stasis from compressive obstruction with large venous cannulas, and systemic vasoconstriction due to shock and pharmacologic vasoconstriction. The care team may use several mitigation strategies to prevent limb ischemia. Arterial and venous complications can be mitigated by careful access site selection, minimizing cannula size, placement of distal perfusion and/or outflow catheter(s), and continuous NIRS monitoring. Rapid intervention, when ischemia or compartment syndrome occurs, can reduce limb loss but may not affect the mortality and morbidity of the ECMO patient in the long term due to their underlying conditions and the etiology of the ECMO need. This study compared parenting across four non‐Western cultures to test cross‐cultural commonality and specificity principles in three aspects: measurement properties, parenting normativeness, and their associations with child outcomes. Both mothers and fathers (N = 1509 dyads) with preschool‐aged children (M = 5.00 years; 48% girls) from urban areas of four countries (Malaysia, N = 372; China, N = 441; Turkey, N = 402; and Japan, N = 294) reported on four parenting constructs (authoritative, authoritarian, group harmony socialization, and intrusive control) and their sub‐dimensions using modified culturally relevant measures. Teachers reported on children's internalizing, externalizing, and prosocial behaviors. The commonality principle was supported by two sets of findings: (1) full measurement invariance was established for most parenting constructs and sub‐dimensions, except that intrusive control only reached partial scalar invariance, and (2) no variations were found in associations between parenting and any child outcomes across cultures or parent gender at the construct level for all four parenting constructs and at the sub‐dimensional level for authoritarian and intrusive control sub‐dimensions. The specificity principle was supported by the other two sets of findings: (1) cross‐cultural differences in parenting normativeness did not follow the pattern of economic development but yielded culture‐specific patterns, and (2) at the sub‐dimensional level, the authoritative parenting and group harmony socialization sub‐dimensions were differently associated with child outcomes across cultures and/or parent gender. The findings suggested that examining specific dimensions rather than broad parenting constructs is necessary to reflect cultural specificities and nuances. Our study provided a culturally‐invariant instrument and a three‐step guide for future parenting research to examine cross‐cultural commonalities/specificities. The use of resilience in social practice has evolved from a theoretical framework at the intersection between individuals and their social ecology. Critics argue this theory still results in policies and practices that are too individualised, with the potential for negative social consequences. This paper further critiques contemporary understanding of resilience theory and its application. It juxtaposes complex systems theory with a social inequalities oriented resilience practice. This provides a paradoxical approach. It is acknowledged that state and public policy decisions and actions can be anti-resilient, undermining community and social resilience that already exists in the form of social relationships, self-organisation and co-production. There has recently been a growing interest in social justice language education, with the goal of challenging entrenched social, cultural and economic hierarchies within educational institutions and the society at large. Contributing to this line of research, the present study focused on an online conversation club that aimed to develop EFL learners' communicative skills and critical literacy through the discussion of social justice issues which have traditionally been deemed 'taboo' and 'controversial'. Data were collected online via demographic information survey, the recordings of the conversation club sessions, facilitator's field notes and reflective journals, and student interviews. The results revealed several discursive moves adopted by EFL learners, which mostly revolved around that's our responsibility vs others in relation to environmental issues; and that's the government's-job when it comes to themes related to immigration. The findings illustrated the potential of social justice-oriented conversation clubs to foster diverse perspectives and authentic conversation in language classrooms, and to cultivate EFL learners' critical literacy. The study provides insights into how language educators can integrate social justice issues into the language curriculum in ways that help language learners question their already-existing beliefs and take action for a socially just world. Objectives: In psychotherapy, clients and therapists work together to forge a path towards better mental health. Key to this process is genuine and honest communication. However, much previous research suggests that clients are not always fully truthful with their therapists. In this study, we make a preliminary examination of the relationship between client deception in therapy, the quality of the therapeutic relationship and therapeutic outcomes. Methods: Participants who had been involved in psychotherapy completed a variety of measures that assessed their use of dishonesty in therapy. They also completed measures of the quality of the client–therapist relationship and measures of their perceived therapeutic outcomes. We hypothesised that client dishonesty would negatively correlate with the perceived quality of the therapeutic relationship and the therapeutic outcomes. Furthermore, we predicted that the quality of the therapeutic relationship would mediate the relationship between client dishonesty and perceived therapeutic outcomes. Results: The results of correlation and mediation analyses supported these hypotheses. Client dishonesty was associated with poorer therapeutic relationships and worse perceived therapeutic outcomes. Additionally, therapeutic relationship quality partially mediated the relationship between client dishonesty and therapeutic outcomes. Conclusions: This initial study provides important tentative insights into the possible negative correlates of client dishonesty in the therapeutic environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ion Mobility coupled with Mass Spectrometry (IM-MS) is a promising analytical technique that enhances molecular characterization by measuring collision cross-section (CCS) values, which are indicative of the molecular size and shape. However, the effective application of CCS values in structural analysis is still constrained by the limited availability of experimental data, necessitating the development of accurate machine learning (ML) models for in silico predictions. In this study, we evaluated state-of-the-art Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), trained to predict CCS values using the largest publicly available dataset to date. Although our results confirm the high accuracy of these models within chemical spaces similar to their training environments, their performance significantly declines when applied to structurally novel regions. This discrepancy raises concerns about the reliability of in silico CCS predictions and underscores the need for releasing further publicly available CCS datasets. To mitigate this, we introduce Mol2CCS which demonstrates how generalization can be partially improved by extending models to account for additional features such as molecular fingerprints, descriptors, and the molecule types. Lastly, we also show how confidence models can support by enhancing the reliability of the CCS estimates. Scientific contribution We have benchmarked state-of-the-art graph neural networks for predicting collision cross section. Our work highlights the accuracy of these models when trained and predicted in similar chemical spaces, but also how their accuracy drops when evaluated in structurally novel regions. Lyme disease is caused by the spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by Ixodes spp ticks. The rise in Lyme disease cases since its discovery in the 1970s has reinforced the need for a vaccine. A vaccine based on B burgdorferi outer surface protein A (OspA) was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) several decades ago, but was pulled from the market a few years later, reportedly due to poor sales, despite multiple organizations concluding that it was safe and effective. Newer OspA-based vaccines are being developed and are likely to be available in the coming years. More recently, there has been a push to develop vaccines that target the tick vector instead of the pathogen to inhibit tick feeding and thus prevent transmission of tick-borne pathogens to humans and wildlife reservoirs. We study the coupled charge density wave (CDW) and insulator-to-metal transitions in the 2D quantum material 1T-TaS2. By applying in situ cryogenic 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy with in situ electrical resistance measurements, we directly visualize the CDW transition and establish that the transition is mediated by basal dislocations (stacking solitons). We find that dislocations can both nucleate and pin the transition and locally alter the transition temperature Tc by nearly ~75 K. This finding was enabled by the application of unsupervised machine learning to cluster five-dimensional, terabyte scale datasets, which demonstrate a one-to-one correlation between resistance--a global property--and local CDW domain-dislocation dynamics, thereby linking the material microstructure to device properties. This work represents a major step toward defect-engineering of quantum materials, which will become increasingly important as we aim to utilize such materials in real devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many developmental psychologists aspire to conduct research that informs interventions and policies to prevent income-related disparities in child development. Among growing researcher discussion about the value of interventions that target “structural” and resource-related correlates of income inequality and child development (e.g., housing, food, material goods, cash), rather than individual, person-centered correlates (e.g., parenting behaviors), the perspectives of mothers with low incomes may provide important context. 281 mothers with young children and low incomes rated various structural and individual interventions, framed as having minimal costs and entry barriers, for their perceived helpfulness. Analyses were pre-registered. Overall, mothers rated all interventions very highly, though they rated structural interventions as slightly more helpful than individual interventions. Mothers rated interventions they used in the past as less helpful than those they hadn’t previously used. An exploratory qualitative analysis revealed mothers’ desires for supports in other intervention domains beyond those addressed in our survey. Together, mothers’ responses indicated that they did not see individual interventions as inherently unhelpful due to a focus on individual states, knowledge, and skills. Purpose: Fresh-frozen specimen availability and cost may be a barrier for initiation of biomechanical studies where soft tissue is used in a construct with other medical devices. The impact of soft tissue preservation method on the outcomes of biomechanical studies in the specific case of graft-suture constructs is relatively unexplored. This study aimed to observe peak loads and failure modes in biomechanical testing of fresh-frozen (FF) versus formalin embalmed (FE) quadriceps tendon (QT) graft-suture constructs for soft tissue fixation in ACLR and assess suitability of FE QT graft constructs for load-to-fail testing. Methods: Twenty QT grafts were harvested from human cadaver specimens. Ten grafts came from fresh-frozen donors and 10 from embalmed donors. All grafts were prepared with the modified Prusik knot using a braided composite suture and subjected to tensile loading. Comparisons between the biomechanical properties of the graft-suture constructs were made with unpaired t tests with α = 0.05. Results: FE and FF constructs displayed similar peak loads and failure modes. FF constructs had greater elongation after pre-tensioning than FE (7.3 vs. 5.5 mm, p = 0.02) and greater elongation after cyclic loading than FE constructs (17.5 vs. 10.5 mm, p = 0.01). Hysteresis was greater for FF constructs at the 50th, 100th, 150th, and 200th cycle (p = 0.02, p = 0.07, p < 0.001, p = 0.004, respectively). FE constructs were stiffer than fresh-frozen (103 vs. 84 N/mm, p < 0.001). Conclusion: FE constructs were significantly stiffer but displayed similar peak load and failure mode to FF which was reflective of the strength of the suture material. FE grafts can offer an alternative to FF grafts in graft-suture constructs for biomechanical studies where load at failure and knot security and strength is of main interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lithium is one of the lightest elements on Earth and it has been in the environment since the formation of the galaxy. While a common element, it has not been found to be an essential element in biological processes, ranging from single cell organisms to Homo sapiens. Instead, at an early stage of evolution, organisms committed to a range of elements such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and iron to serve essential functions. Such ions serve critical functions in ion channels, as co-factors in enzymes, as a cofactor in oxygen transport, in DNA replication, as a storage molecule in bone and liver, and in a variety of other roles in biological processes. While seemingly excluded from a major essential role in such processes, lithium ions appear to be able to modulate a variety of biological processes and "correct" deviation from normal activity, as a deficiency of lithium can have biological consequences. Lithium salts are found in low levels in many foods and water supplies, but the effectiveness of Li salts to affect biological systems came to recent prominence with the work of Cade, who reported that administrating Li salts calmed guinea pigs and was subsequently effective at relatively high doses to "normalize" a subset of patients with bipolar disorders. Because of its ability to modulate many biological pathways and processes (e.g., cyclic AMP, GSK-3beta, inositol metabolism, NaK ATPases, neuro processes and centers, immune-related events, respectively) both in vitro and in vivo and during development and adult life, Li salts have become both a useful tool to better understand the molecular regulation of such processes and to also provide insights into altered biological processes in vivo during aging and in disease states. While the range of targets for lithium action supports its possible role as a modulator of biological dysregulation, it presents a conundrum for researchers attempting to elucidate its specific primary target in different tissues in vivo. This review will discuss aspects of the state of knowledge regarding some of the systems that can be influenced, focusing on those involving neural and autoimmunity as examples, some of the mechanisms involved, examples of how Li salts can be used to study model systems, as well as suggesting areas where the use of Li salts could lead to additional insights into both disease mechanisms and natural processes at the molecular and cell levels. In addition, caveats regarding lithium doses used, the strengths and weaknesses of rodent models, the background genetics of the strain of mice or rats employed, and the sex of the animals or the cells used, are discussed. Louisiana Creole as a cultural identity is inextricably linked to Blackness. An understanding of Creole identity as a challenge to the racial binary imposed within Louisiana illuminates the larger legacies of colonialism, slavery, and systems of inequality within society. Creoles organised and fought against racial inequality and segregation through the collective of the Citizens' Committee forming the legal challenge of Plessy v. Ferguson. Although Louisiana Creoles have been associated with Catholicism, as St. Augustine stands as a historical site of Creole culture, spiritual practices have transcended institutionalised religions. Louisiana Creoles critiqued the institution of the Catholic Church and developed methods of resistance. Drawing upon the legacy of social clubs, Creoles used the format of these associations to further spiritual activism. Through adopting aspects of Catholicism, African traditions, and Louisiana and Creole culture, they formed belief systems and devised intersectional strategies to combat institutional racism. Context Cottonseed oil (CSO) is higher in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and saturated fatty acids (SFAs) than many liquid plant oils. Objectives To conduct a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining effects of CSO on markers of lipid metabolism and evaluate lipid and lipoprotein effects of incorporating CSO into a healthy dietary pattern using regression equations. Data Sources A systematic search was conducted for RCTs comparing CSO with a non-CSO comparator in any population. Data Analyses The Katan regression equation was used to predict lipid/lipoprotein changes when incorporating CSO into a US-style healthy eating pattern at 25 to 100% of the total oil allowance (ie, 27 g/2000 kcal) compared with average American intake (NHANES 2017 to 2020 pre-COVID pandemic). Results In total, 3 eligible publications (n = 2 trials), with 58 participants that provided 44% and 30% of total energy as CSO, were included. Fasting low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C; ≈ –7.7 mg/dL) and triglycerides (≈ –7.5 mg/dL) were lower after 5 days of a CSO-enriched diet vs olive oil (OO). In a 56-day trial, CSO lowered total cholesterol (TC; ≈ –14.8 mg/dL), LDL-C (≈ –14.0 mg/dL), and non–high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (≈ –14.2 mg/dL) vs OO. Postprandially, angiopoietin-like protein-3, -4, and -8 concentrations decreased with CSO and increased with OO intake. Compared with average American intake, a healthy eating pattern with 27 g of CSO was estimated to lower TC (–8.1 mg/dL) and LDL-C (–7.3 mg/dL) levels, with minimal reduction in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (–1.1 mg/dL). Compared with the healthy eating pattern, incorporating 27 g of CSO was predicted to increase TC and LDL-C levels by 2.4 mg/dL. Conclusion Limited high-quality research suggests CSO may improve lipid/lipoprotein levels compared with OO. We utilized national claims-based data to identify the change in odds of diagnosis of ALS following possible-ALS-symptoms-and whether the change varies in urban/rural areas. Insurance claims were obtained from the Merative MarketScan databases, 2001–2021 in the United States. Individuals with incident ALS were identified and matched on age, sex, and enrollment period to individuals without ALS. For all individuals, claims for 8 possible-ALS-symptoms in the time before any ALS diagnosis were identified. We then used conditional logistic regression to estimate the odds of being diagnosed with ALS following these symptoms and whether the association varied by urban/rural location. 19,226 individuals with ALS were matched to 96,126 controls. Patients with ALS were more likely to live in an urban area (87.0% vs 84.5%). Of those with ALS 84% had 1+ of our 8 possible-ALS-symptom compared to 51% of controls. After adjustment for confounders, having possible-ALS-symptoms increased the odds of a future ALS diagnosis by nearly 5-fold. A dose-response pattern was present with increasing odds as the number of symptoms increased. In all models, urban areas were associated with increased odds of diagnosis with ALS while the effect of having a symptom was smaller in urban places. Urban cases of ALS are diagnosed at younger ages. These results suggest symptoms may appear and be noted years before the diagnosis of ALS. Additionally, rural patients are diagnosed at later ages with a greater dependence on symptoms than urban patients. These results highlight potential improvements for screening for ALS. Purpose: Service referrals are required for cancer survivors to access specialist dietary and exercise support. Many system-level factors influence referral practices within the healthcare system. Hence, the aim of this study was to identify system-level factors and their interconnectedness, as well as strategies for optimising dietary and exercise referral practices in Australia. Methods: A full-day workshop involving national multidisciplinary key stakeholders explored system-level factors impacting dietary and exercise referral practices. Facilitated group discussions using the nominal group technique identified barriers and facilitators to referral practices based on the six World Health Organisation (WHO) building blocks. The systems-thinking approach generated six cognitive maps, each representing a building block. A causal loop diagram was developed to visualise factors that influence referral practices. Additionally, each group identified their top five strategies by leveraging facilitators and addressing barriers relevant to their WHO building block. Results: Twenty-seven stakeholders participated in the workshop, including consumers (n = 2), cancer specialists (n = 4), nursing (n = 6) and allied health professionals (n = 10), and researchers, representatives of peak bodies, not-for-profit organisations, and government agencies (n = 5). Common system-level factors impacting on referral practices included funding, accessibility, knowledge and education, workforce capacity, and infrastructure. Fifteen system-level strategies were identified to improve referral practices. The colonization of a novel geographic area is a classic source of ecological opportunity. Likewise, complex microhabitats are thought to promote biodiversity. We sought to reconcile these two predictions when they are naturally opposing outcomes. We assess the macroevolutionary consequences of an ancestral shift from benthic to pelagic microhabitat zones on rates of speciation and phenotypic evolution in North American minnows. Pelagic species have more similar phenotypes and slower rates of phenotypic evolution, but faster speciation rates, than benthic species. These are likely two independent, opposing responses to specialization along the benthic-pelagic axis, as rates of phenotypic evolution and speciation are not directly correlated. The pelagic zone is more structurally homogenous and offers less ecological opportunity, acting as an ecological dead end for minnows. In contrast, pelagic species may be more mobile and prone to dispersal and subsequent geographic isolation and, consequently, experience elevated instances of allopatric speciation. Microhabitat shifts can have decoupled effects on different dimensions of biodiversity, highlighting the need for nuance when interpreting the macroevolutionary consequences of ecological opportunity. This article extends knowledge of sixteenth-century Scottish textual production by exploring the range of writing activities undertaken by Robert Ewyn, scribe, chaplain and notary. Ewyn made a copy of Regiam maiestatem in Scots in 1548. This manuscript was held in a private collection until 2016 and is comparatively unknown: a full codicological description and account of its provenance history is offered here. A biographical profile of Robert Ewyn is constructed from references in wills and other public records, revealing his family connections and his links to the Edinburgh crafts community; his career as a notary, pre- and post-reformation, is investigated and documents prepared by him are identified. Ewyn's scribal hand is traced across three very different writing contexts (literary book production, legal documentation and secretarial note-taking); as a result, evidence emerges of the different kinds of handwriting a professional scribe could produce, and of the multiple forms of employment that pre-modern notaries might undertake. By placing a strong emphasis on one's national, cultural, and ethnic identity, neonationalism, as a contemporary political and cultural movement, prioritizes 'sameness' over diversity. This phenomenological case study focused on Turkish universities which have been under increasingly oppressive neo-nationalist policies within the past 10 years. It examined the lived experiences of a multilingual scholar in regard to his identity (re)construction and socialization upon his return from the US to Türkiye (Turkey). Descriptions of Anıl's lived experiences were longitudinally collected via in-depth interviews, anecdotal records, and bi-weekly journal entries. The findings indicated that one's country of origin or nation-state becomes a source of discrimination not only in study abroad contexts, but also when international students and scholars return to their home countries. In other words, neo-nationalism in higher education institutions (HEIs) not only influences 'the Other' but also those within the same 'nation' with more progressive pedagogical beliefs and practices. The findings also underline the need to consider the phenomenon of transnational intersectionality when accounting for multilingual scholars' identity (re)construction and socialization. Such an approach would help situate the complexities of transnationalism within the larger discussions of how HEIs are shaped by current neo-nationalist policies. This study also calls for further research to pay attention to colonial legacies such as linguicide and epistemicide within HEIs so as to encourage multilingual scholars to resist and dismantle oppressive policies and practices that govern academia both at local and global contexts. The question of regional per-capita income convergence has been widely investigated theoretically and empirically. This study reviews the relevant literature and considers the possible significance of fiscal decentralisation in the convergence process. Alternative indicators of fiscal decentralization are examined within a SDM model which also takes into account possible spatial interdependencies between neighbouring regions. The modelling suggests that fiscal decentralization does appear to play a significant role in the convergence process in Vietnam. Income inequality remains a challenging issue for policymakers to resolve, and if regional disparities can be reduced in part through fiscal decentralization, this is a significant finding for policy formulation. Context: Phytophthora cinnamomi has been present in Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve in Western Australia for decades, with impacts observed in susceptible plant communities. Aims: This study aimed to examine the past and present impact of P. cinnamomi on ecosystems. Methods: The distribution of P. cinnamomi was mapped 1983–1995 and reassessed in 2024. The long-term spread of the pathogen was measured. Plant densities were assessed, dry-weight biomass measured, and visits by avifauna quantified in infested and healthy vegetation. The persistence of chlamydospores was assessed. Key results: Mapping confirmed the widespread distribution of P. cinnamomi in the Reserve, with some areas mapped as disease-free up to 1995 now infested. Phytophthora dieback has spread in Banksia shrubland at an average of 1.5 m/year over a 33-year period. The density of species from the Proteaceae, Fabaceae, Ericaceae, and Hibbertia was significantly reduced; and the biomass of non-sedge species and visits by avifauna lower in infested compared with healthy Banksia shrubland. However, pockets of healthy habitat persist in infested areas and two highly susceptible Ericaceae (Leucopogon glabellus , Styphelia flavescens) were observed in high numbers in infested vegetation. Recovery of chlamydospores confirmed the persistence of the pathogen behind the dieback front. Conclusions: The impact of P. cinnamomi is long term and irreversible, however, some susceptible species may have mechanisms to ensure their persistence through prolific seed production. Implications: Protection of areas of healthy susceptible habitat from the introduction and spread of P. cinnamomi , the implementation of existing control measures and research into alternative measures continue to be a priority. Plant disease caused by the root pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi has resulted in significant changes to susceptible plant communities in Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve. The present study assessed whether dementia worry is associated with adults’ subjective cognitive difficulties, and whether any associations are moderated by age. Participants were 477 adults aged 18–90 years. They completed standard, subjective measures of dementia worry and everyday cognitive difficulties (i.e. attention, language, verbal and visual-spatial memory, and visual-perceptual ability). Moderated regression analyses included dementia worry as a predictor of specific cognitive difficulties, and age as a moderator. Covariates included gender, trait cognitive and somatic anxiety, general aging-related anxiety, depression, stress, mental health treatment status, and health status. Greater overall dementia worry, and specifically more frequent dementia worry, were both associated with greater attentional difficulty in middle-aged and older adults, but not in young adults. Cognitions about developing dementia in reaction to memory lapses were also associated with greater cognitive difficulties across the adult lifespan for multiple cognitive domains. Results highlight a robust relationship between dementia worry and subjective attentional difficulties, especially in middle-aged and older adults. Worry frequency is also more influential with adult aging. A cognitive or meta-cognitive mechanism may underlie subjective cognitive concerns across the adult lifespan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following the apparent final case in an Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak, the decision to declare the outbreak over must balance societal benefits of relaxing interventions against the risk of resurgence. Estimates of the end-of-outbreak probability (the probability that no future cases will occur) provide quantitative evidence that can inform the timing of an end-of-outbreak declaration. An existing modeling approach for estimating the end-of-outbreak probability requires comprehensive contact tracing data describing who infected whom to be available, but such data are often unavailable or incomplete during outbreaks. Here, we develop a Markov chain Monte Carlo-based approach that extends the previous method and does not require contact tracing data. Considering data from two EVD outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, we find that data describing who infected whom are not required to resolve uncertainty about when to declare an outbreak over. The purpose of this article was to examine whether psychological flourishing, a multi-dimensional construct of well-being, has the potential to play a preventative role in suicidal and nonsuicidal thoughts and actions. This two-part study utilized cross-sectional survey data from college students across the United States, assessing levels of psychological distress, loneliness, and psychological flourishing. Frequencies of suicidal ideation, intent, previous suicidal attempts, and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) were also assessed. Data collected in 2019 were used for Study 1 (n = 38,679) and data collected in 2020 were used for Study 2 (n = 50,307). Psychological flourishing is significantly inversely related to suicide and NSSI risk when controlling for loneliness and psychological distress. There were two-way interactions between flourishing and distress, whereby under conditions of high distress, the inverse effect of flourishing on suicidal ideation, intent, and attempts and NSSI was more pronounced. These results were consistent across both studies. Subgroup analyses revealed similar results regardless of participants' race, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Inverse associations between flourishing and self-injurious thoughts and behaviors suggest that flourishing may buffer risk of suicide and NSSI, and these findings may have important implications for developing evidence-based therapeutic interventions. Background: Diabetes is a major determinant of health outcomes. Trauma patients are disproportionately from lower socioeconomic status, where lack of access to health care prevents timely treatment. Trauma centers could play a role in identifying patients in need of improved glucose management, but the current burden of disease is not known. We assessed the incidence of patients in need of intervention that presented to a level 1 trauma center over a 6-month period. Methods: A retrospective chart review over 6 months of all trauma patients admitted to a level 1 trauma center was performed. Patients' past medical history (PMH), medication reconciliation, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) were recorded on initial assessment; patients <18 years old, lacking an HbA1c, or missing PMH were excluded. Patients with PMH of diabetes or antihyperglycemic use were classified by HbA1c: well-controlled ≤8.0% or poorly controlled >8.0%. Patients with no history of diabetes or antihyperglycemic use were classified based on their HbA1c: non-diabetic <5.7%, pre-diabetic 5.7-6.4%, and undiagnosed diabetic ≥6.5%. Results: Overall, 1377 patients were identified. After exclusion criteria, 903 patients were classified as follows: 593 (66%) non-diabetics, 160 (18%) pre-diabetics, and 150 (17%) diabetics. Fifteen diabetics were undiagnosed; 39 of the diagnosed diabetics were poorly controlled. Including pre-diabetics, a total of 214 (24%) trauma patients were in need of improved glycemic control. Discussion: One in four trauma patients would benefit from improved outpatient glycemic management, representing a missed opportunity for preventative health care. The literature on bullying perpetration is underpinned by gendered undertones, commonly portraying men as bullies given men's greater tendency to exhibit stereotypically masculine and overtly grandiose features of narcissism. Due to the lack of gender-sensitive inventories employed, the association between narcissism and bullying perpetration among women remains understudied. Using an all-women sample (N = 314), the current study explored grandiose narcissism (overtly immodest and domineering) and vulnerable narcissism (hypersensitive and neurotic), the latter being more prevalent among women, in relation to bullying peers. Correlation analyses showed that vulnerable narcissism was positively associated with verbal, physical, and indirect bullying. At the subscale level, contingent self-esteem, devaluing, and entitlement rage were positively associated with all three types of bullying. Grandiose narcissism was positively associated with physical and verbal bullying, as was grandiose fantasy at the subscale level, and exploitativeness was positively associated with all three types of bullying. When grandiose and vulnerable narcissism were simultaneously entered into a regression model, only vulnerable narcissism emerged as a positive predictor of physical and verbal bullying. At the subscale level, devaluing positively predicted verbal and indirect bullying, whereas hiding the self negatively predicted indirect bullying. Expressions of vulnerable narcissism, more so than grandiose narcissism, may be relevant for bullying perpetration among women. Implications for anti-bullying interventions are discussed. Objective: Brief and accessible therapies for people with an eating disorder is an important health target. Ten‐session cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT‐T) is a brief treatment evaluated in people with a non‐underweight eating disorder. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of CBT‐T for young people in primary care. Method: This cohort pilot study used group (adolescents vs. young adults) by time (over four time points) Generalised Linear Mixed Model analysis. Participants included 13–25‐year‐olds attending an early intervention mental health service, receiving 10 sessions of CBT‐T. Feasibility was assessed using recruitment, retention and satisfaction. Eating and other pathology measures were administered at baseline, weeks four and 10, and 12‐week follow‐up. Results: Of the 63 commencing treatment, 38 completed 10 CBT‐T sessions (60%). Most (94%) reported high treatment satisfaction. Significant reductions in eating pathology, depression and stress were found. Age group did not yield differences in CBT‐T outcome, with large to very large effect sizes across outcome variables. Anxiety was associated with attrition. Conclusion: This study provides preliminary support for the use of CBT‐T in primary care, across adolescence and early adulthood. Findings require replication in other clinical settings and comparison to other clinical approaches and control populations. This paper offers a comparative analysis of J. G. Ballard's Empire of the Sun, The Kindness of Women, and Miracles of Life in their engagements with the psychological theory of Carl Jung. The first half of the paper explores Jung's suggestions that psychology is to some extent ethnically determined and Eastern and Western consciousness in many ways antonymous. Challenging this view, Empire resists essentialist notions of psychology which argue that the individual psyche is in part separate from the social environment in which it forms. In Empire individual psychology changes with changing power relations and is unable to escape imperialist systems of thought. In this manner, the novel resists national and ethnic categories for the understanding of human psychology, and instead turns its focus to the effect of political structures on mental activity and self-conception. Turning from Empire to Kindness and Miracles, the second part of the paper reads Ballard's broader fictional and nonfictional autobiographies for their representation of memory as a radically constructive function of mind. In this manner, Ballard's autobiographical projects foreground the slippage between fact and fiction in the process of remembering, and challenge the conception of mind as an inelastic or deterministic structure. Background It is of vital importance to comprehensively and transparently report clinical trial activity. The SPIRIT 2013 and CONSORT 2010 statements exist to define items to be reported in clinical trial protocols and randomized controlled trials, respectively. The aim of this methodological review was to assess the reporting quality of pediatric neuro-oncology trial protocols and trial result articles. Methods Published trial protocols and phase II/III trial result articles relating to pediatric brain tumors (published after the introduction of the SPIRIT 2013 statement), were identified through searches of 4 electronic bibliographic databases. The reporting quality of included trial protocols and result articles was assessed against the aforementioned statements. In addition, the CONSORT-A checklist was used to assess the abstracts of trial result articles. Percentage adherence was calculated for each article. Results Nine trial protocols, 68 phase II trials, and 8 phase III trial result articles were included. Mean adherence of trial protocols to the SPIRIT statement was 76.8% (SD : 0.09). Mean adherence of trial abstracts to CONSORT-A was 67.4% (SD : 0.13) for phase II abstracts and 47.5% (SD : 0.09) for phase III abstracts. Adherence of trial result articles to CONSORT was 71.3% (SD : 0.10) for phase II trials and 70.3% (SD : 0.13) for phase III trials. Conclusions The reporting quality of pediatric neuro-oncology trial protocols and trial result articles requires improvement, particularly in the areas of randomization and blinding. Individuals with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) have historically been advised to avoid contact sports and isometric exercise for risk of increasing aortic dilation and valve disease. There is mounting evidence that current sports participation guidelines qualify children for a high rate of sports exclusion, and that this population is at increased risk of obesity. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate relationship between sports participation and aortic dilation in children with bicuspid aortic valve and secondarily the relationship between competitive sports participation and obesity. We performed a review of children between the ages of 8 and 17 years with isolated BAV followed at Oregon Health & Science University. We excluded those with other congenital heart diseases, genetic conditions, prior cardiac intervention, and inability to ambulate independently. Parents completed a phone survey detailing their child's level of daily activity and participation in competitive sports. Demographic information and most recent echo findings were collected from the electronic medical record. We found no difference between the aortic diameters of athletes vs non-athletes. We also found that sports participation and daily activity were both associated with a decreased likelihood of obesity (OR 0.24, 95% CI 0.078–0.73 and OR 0.24, 95% CI 0.081–0.71 respectively). In summary, in our sample population, competitive sports participation was associated with a decreased risk of obesity. Background: The main focus of traumatic brain injury (TBI) management is prevention of secondary injury. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH), the induction of a targeted low core body temperature, has been explored as a potential neuroprotectant in TBI. The aim of this article is to synthesize the available clinical data comparing the use of TH with the use of normothermia in TBI. Methods: A systematic search was conducted through MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for randomized clinical trials including one or more outcome of interest associated with TH use in TBI. Independent reviewers evaluated quality of the studies and extracted data on patients with TBI undergoing TH treatment compared with those undergoing normothermia treatment. Pooled estimates, confidence intervals (CIs), and risk ratios (RRs) or odds ratios were calculated for all outcomes. Results: A total of 3,909 patients from 32 studies were eligible for analysis. Pooled analysis revealed a significant benefit of TH on mortality and functional outcome (RR 0.81, 95% CI 0.68–0.96, I2 = 41%; and RR 0.77; 95% CI 0.67–0.88, I2 = 68%, respectively). However, subgroup analysis based on risk of bias showed that only studies with a high risk of bias maintained this benefit. When divided by cooling method, reduced poor functional outcome was seen in the systemic surface cooling and cranial cooling groups (RR 0.68, 95% CI 0.59–0.79, I2 = 35%; and RR 0.44, 95% CI 0.29–0.67, I2 = 0%), and no difference was seen for the systemic intravenous or gastric cooling group. Reduced mortality was only seen in the systemic surface cooling group (RR 0.63, 95% CI 0.53–0.75, I2 = 0%,); however, this group had mostly high risk of bias studies. TH had an increased rate of pneumonia (RR 1.24, 95% CI 1.10–1.40, I2 = 32%), coagulation abnormalities (RR 1.63, 95% CI 1.09–2.44, I2 = 55%), and cardiac arrhythmias (RR 1.78, 95% CI 1.05–3.01, I2 = 21%). Once separated by low and high risk of bias, we saw no difference in these complications in the groups with low risk of bias. Overall quality of the evidence was moderate for mortality, functional outcome, and pneumonia and was low for coagulation abnormalities and cardiac arrhythmias. Conclusions: With the addition of several recent randomized clinical trials and a thorough quality assessment, we have provided an updated systematic review and meta-analysis that concludes that TH does not show any benefit over normothermia in terms of mortality and functional outcome. Objective: The current study examined group differences in college students' views on e-cigarettes in terms of safety, popularity, health risks, social acceptability, efficacy as a cessation aid, and promoting combustible cigarette use. Participants: 337 undergraduates (Mage = 20.84, SD = 3.79; 72.1% female; 68.5% White) divided into three groups: Never Users (n = 178), Ever Users (n = 108), and Current Users (n = 51). Methods: Participants completed questionnaires for course credit. Results: Compared to Ever and Never Users, Current Users believed e-cigarettes were safer, healthier, a useful tool to quit smoking, did not lead to combustible cigarette smoking, and that nicotine was less dangerous. Current Users also were less likely to endorse boosting social image as a motive for use. Conclusions: Public health campaigns could benefit from targeting current users' positive beliefs about e-cigarettes to reduce the prevalence of e-cigarette use among college students. To find the optimal individual dose and dosage strategy, specialised tools are used. Three tools have been proven useful to personalise drug treatments: therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of drug levels, pharmacogenetic testing (PG), and molecular neuroimaging.In these Guidelines, we provide an in-depth review of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacogenetics for 45 antipsychotics. Over 30 international experts in psychiatry selected studies that have measured drug concentrations in the blood (TDM), gene polymorphisms of enzymes involved in drug metabolism, or receptor/transporter occupancies in the brain (positron emission tomography (PET)).Study results strongly support the use of TDM and the cytochrome P450 (CYP) genotyping and/or phenotyping to guide drug therapies. Evidence-based target ranges are available for titrating drug doses that are often supported by PET findings.All three tools discussed in these Guidelines are essential for drug treatment. TDM goes well beyond typical indications such as unclear compliance and polypharmacy. Despite its enormous potential to optimise treatment effects, minimise side effects and ultimately reduce the global burden of diseases, personalised drug treatment has not yet become the standard of care in psychiatry. Background: Responsive feeding, when caregivers attend to children's signals of hunger and satiation and respond in an emotionally supportive and developmentally appropriate way, is associated with the development of healthy eating behaviors, improved diet quality, and healthy weight status for children. However, gaps in the literature remain on how factors, such as maternal depressive symptoms and child temperament, influence feeding interactions. Methods: This longitudinal secondary data analysis explored the association between maternal depressive symptom trajectory and child temperament with maternal feeding practices in women with obesity who participated in a prenatal lifestyle intervention trial. Mothers self-reported depressive symptoms at baseline, 35 weeks gestation, and 6, 12, and 18 months postpartum. At 18- and 24-months postpartum, mothers completed self-reported assessments of feeding practices and child temperament and completed in-home video-recorded meals with their child, coded using the Responsiveness to Child Feeding Cues Scale. We used group-based trajectory modeling to identify distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms and generalized regressions to assess the association between symptom trajectory group and feeding. We also explored interactions between depressive symptoms and child temperament. Results: Three distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms were identified: No-Minimal and Decreasing, Mild-Moderate and Stable, and Moderate-Severe and Stable. At 18-months, when compared to the No-Minimal and Decreasing group, membership in the Moderate-Severe and Stable group was associated with higher observed responsiveness to child satiation cues ( =2.3, 95%CI = 0.2, 4.4) and lower self-reported pressure to eat ( =-0.4, 95%CI= -0.7, 0.0). When compared to the No-Minimal and Decreasing group, membership in the Mild-Moderate and Stable group was associated with higher self-reported restriction ( =0.4, 95%CI = 0.0,0.7). The associations between trajectory group membership and feeding practices did not reach statistical significance at 24 months. Associations between depressive symptoms and restriction were moderated by child effortful control at 18 months ) and surgency at 24 months ). Conclusion: A Moderate-Severe and Stable depressive symptom trajectory was associated with more responsive feeding practices and a Mild-Moderate and Stable trajectory was associated with higher restrictive feeding. Background: The IMPACT survey aimed to elucidate the humanistic, clinical and economic burden of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) on individuals with OI, their families, caregivers and wider society. Research methodology, demographics and initial insights from the survey have been previously reported. The cost of illness (healthcare resource use, productivity loss, out-of-pocket spending) and drivers of the economic impact of OI are reported here. Methods: IMPACT was an international mixed-methods online survey in eight languages (fielded July–September 2021) targeting adults (aged ≥ 18 years) or adolescents (aged ≥ 12–17 years) with OI, caregivers with or without OI and other close relatives. Survey domains included demographics, socioeconomic factors, clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, quality of life and health economics. The health economic domain for adults, which included questions on healthcare resource use, productivity loss and out-of-pocket spending, was summarised. Regression and pairwise analyses were conducted to identify independent drivers and associations with respondent characteristics. Results: Overall, 1,440 adults with OI responded to the survey. Respondents were mostly female (70%) and from Europe (63%) with a median age of 43 years. Within a 12-month period, adults with OI reported visiting a wide range of healthcare professionals. Two-thirds (66%) of adults visited a hospital, and one-third (33%) visited the emergency department. The mean total number of diagnostic tests undergone by adults within these 12 months was 8.0. Adults had undergone a mean total of 11.8 surgeries up to the time point of the survey. The proportions of adults using queried consumables or services over 12 months ranged from 18–82%, depending on the type of consumable or service. Most adults (58%) were in paid employment, of which nearly one-third (29%) reported missing a workday. Of the queried expenses, the mean total out-of-pocket spending in 4 weeks was €191. Respondent characteristics such as female sex, more severe self-reported OI and the experience of fractures were often associated with increased economic burden. Conclusion: IMPACT provides novel insights into the substantial cost of illness associated with OI on individuals, healthcare systems and society at large. The cell envelope fortifies bacterial cells against antibiotics and other insults. Species in the Mycobacteriales order have a complex envelope that includes an outer layer of mycolic acids called the mycomembrane (MM) and a cell wall composed of peptidoglycan and arabinogalactan. This envelope architecture is unique among bacteria and contributes significantly to the virulence of pathogenic Mycobacteriales like Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Characterization of pathways that govern envelope biogenesis in these organisms is therefore critical in understanding their biology and for identifying new antibiotic targets. To better understand MM biogenesis, we developed a cell sorting-based screen for mutants defective in the surface exposure of a porin normally embedded in the MM of the model organism Corynebacterium glutamicum. The results revealed a requirement for the conserved σD envelope stress response in porin export and identified MarP as the site-1 protease, respectively, that activate the response by cleaving the membrane-embedded anti-sigma factor. A reporter system revealed that the σD pathway responds to defects in mycolic acid and arabinogalactan biosynthesis, suggesting that the stress response has the unusual property of being induced by activating signals that arise from defects in the assembly of two distinct envelope layers. Our results thus provide new insights into how C. glutamicum and related bacteria monitor envelope integrity and suggest a potential role for members of the σD regulon in protein export to the MM. Preeclampsia, a hypertensive disease of pregnancy of unknown etiology, is intensely studied as a model of cardiovascular disease (CVD) not only due to multiple shared pathologic elements but also because changes that develop over decades in CVD appear and resolve within days in preeclampsia. Those affected by preeclampsia and their offspring experience increased lifetime risks of CVD. At the systemic level, preeclampsia is characterized by increased cellular, membrane, and blood levels of cholesterol; however, cholesterol-dependent signaling, such as canonical Wnt/βcatenin, Hedgehog, and endothelial nitric oxide synthase, is downregulated indicating a cholesterol deficit with the upregulation of cholesterol synthesis and efflux. Hypoxia-related signaling in preeclampsia also appears to be paradoxical with increased Hypoxia-Inducible Factors in the placenta but measurably increased oxygen in maternal blood in placental villous spaces. This review addresses the molecular mechanisms by which excessive systemic cholesterol and deficient cholesterol-dependent signaling may arise from the effects of dietary lipid variance and environmental membrane modifiers causing the cellular hypoxia that characterizes preeclampsia. Background and aims: Cerebral microbleeds are magnetic imaging resonance (MRI) markers of hemorrhage-prone cerebral small vessel disease that predict future risk of ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage (ICrH). There exist concerns about the net benefit of antithrombotic therapy in patients with microbleeds. We aimed to investigate the effects of an oral factor-XIa inhibitor (asundexian), that is hypothesized to inhibit thrombosis without compromising hemostasis, on the development of new microbleeds over time and interactions between microbleeds and asundexian treatment on clinical outcomes. We additionally assessed associations between baseline microbleeds and the risks of clinical and neuroimaging outcomes in patients with non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke. Methods: This is a secondary analysis of the PACIFIC-STROKE, international, multi-center Phase 2b double-blind, randomized clinical trial. PACIFIC-STROKE enrolled patients aged ⩾ 45 years with mild-to-moderate non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke who presented within 48 h of symptom onset for whom antiplatelet therapy was intended. Microbleeds were centrally adjudicated, and participants with an interpretable T2*-weighted sequence at their baseline MRI were included in this analysis. Patients were randomized to asundexian (10/20/50 mg daily) versus placebo plus standard antiplatelet treatment. Regression models were used to estimate the effects of (1) all pooled asundexian doses and (2) asundexian 50 mg daily on new microbleed formation on 26-week MRIs. Cox proportional hazards or regression models were additionally used to estimate interactions between treatment assignment and microbleeds for ischemic stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA) (primary outcome), and ICrH, all-cause mortality, hemorrhagic transformation (HT), and new microbleeds (secondary outcomes). Results: Of 1746 participants (mean age, 67.0 ± 10.0; 34% female) with baseline MRIs, 604 (35%) had microbleeds. During a median follow-up of 10.6 months, 7.0% (n = 122) had ischemic stroke/TIA, 0.5% (n = 8) ICrH, and 2.1% (n = 37) died. New microbleeds developed in 10.3% (n = 155) of participants with adequate follow-up MRIs and HT in 31.4% (n = 345). In the total sample of patients with adequate baseline and 26-week follow-up MRIs (n = 1507), new microbleeds occurred in 10.2% of patients assigned to any asundexian dose and 10.5% of patients assigned to placebo (OR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.66–1.41). There were no interactions between microbleeds and treatment assignment for any of the outcomes (p for interaction > 0.05). The rates of new microbleeds, HT, and ICrH were numerically less in patients with microbleeds assigned to asundexian relative to placebo. The presence of microbleeds was associated with a higher risk of HT (aOR, 1.6; 95% CI, 1.2–2.1) and new microbleeds (aOR, 4.4; 95% CI, 3.0–6.3). Conclusion: Factor XIa inhibition with asundexian appears safe in patients with non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke and hemorrhage-prone cerebral small vessel disease marked by microbleeds on MRI. Hemorrhoid disease is very common, affecting greater than one-third of adults. Conservative management and several office-based procedures are useful in the treatment of internal hemorrhoids. Patients with refractory hemorrhoid disease have traditionally been treated with surgical hemorrhoidectomy. Rectal artery embolization has emerged as an alternative to surgical hemorrhoidectomy and has been shown to be safe and effective in case series and clinical trials completed over the past decade. Embolization has significantly less postprocedure pain when compared with surgical hemorrhoidectomy with similar outcomes. Pre- and postprocedure imaging are not routinely performed. Intraprocedural imaging consists of selective catheterization of the superior rectal arteries from the inferior mesenteric artery, and the middle rectal arteries from the internal iliac artery. The inferior rectal artery is seldom embolized due to the supply of the levator ani muscle and skin.
