Background: Inter‐hospital transfer is necessary for the transport of patients to specialized treatment. Rotor‐wing aircraft may be used in lieu of ambulances in time‐critical conditions over long distances and when specialist team skills are called for. The purpose of the review is to assess the current scientific literature that describes the scenario to develop a national guideline for inter‐hospital transfers using rotor‐wing aircraft. The aim is to describe the patterns and challenges. Methods and Analysis: The authors will conduct a scoping review as per Joanna Briggs Institute guideline. The protocol for the scoping review will adhere to the Open Science Framework guideline for scoping reviews and we will report the findings of the scoping review as per PRISMA‐ScR guideline. We have developed the search strategy with the help of a research librarian and will conduct search in relevant electronic databases and include gray literature as well, using the PRESS and PRISMA‐S guidelines. Two authors will independently screen titles and abstracts for inclusion as per eligibility criteria and conflicts will be resolved by a third reviewer. Full text retrieval will be conducted accordingly. We will analyze the extracted data using validated statistical methods. Ethics and Dissemination: According to Danish law, scoping reviews are exempt from ethics committee approval. The findings of this scoping review will provide the scientific foundation for a national guideline on rotor‐wing aircraft conveyed inter‐hospital transfers in Denmark. Results have been inconsistent as to whether addition of colony stimulating factor 2 (CSF2) to culture medium improves embryo competence for establishment of pregnancy in cattle and humans. The purpose of the current study was to use all available experiments in cattle concerning effects of CSF2 on pregnancy success after transfer into recipient cattle. The approach was to perform a meta-analysis of all published data sets as well as data from an unpublished experiment described for the first time here. Meta-analysis failed to support the hypothesis that addition of CSF2 to embryo culture medium improves competence of bovine blastocysts to increase pregnancy or calving rates after transfer into recipient females. Thus, its general use as a culture medium additive to increase pregnancy success after embryo transfer is not recommended. • A meta-analysis was conducted of studies in which embryos treated with CSF2 were transferred to recipient females. • Results indicated no improvement in fertility. • Results do not support addition of CSF2 to embryo culture medium to improve pregnancy rate. Background: Response time for emergency medical service units is a key performance indicator. Studies have shown reduced response time association with improved outcome for specific critical conditions. To achieve short response time, emergency vehicles utilize lights and sirens, and crews are allowed to be non‐compliant with traffic rules, posing a risk for accident. The purpose of the systematic review and meta‐analysis is to provide an overview of the current body of evidence regarding the association, if any, between ambulance and helicopter response time and major complications and mortality in patients conveyed by ambulance and/or helicopter. Our secondary aim will be to enhance knowledge in the field of criteria‐based dispatch to provide decision makers with evidence to optimize dispatch of limited resources. Research Questions: What is the association between overall emergency medical services unit response time and patient outcomes, major complications, and time‐critical conditions?What is the internal and external validity of the included literature? Methods: We plan the systematic review and meta‐analysis to be in accordance with the Cochrane Handbook and Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Systematic Reviews. The methodology will include formulating the review questions using a Population, Exposure, and Outcome framework. Every study design is eligible, including qualitative, quantitative, and mixed‐methods designs. We will include all articles in English, Scandinavian, German, French and Portuguese in this systematic review. Results: We will publish results from the systematic review and meta‐analysis in a peer‐reviewed journal and we will present the results at scientific conferences and meetings. Molnupiravir, a prodrug known for its broad antiviral activity, has demonstrated efficacy in animal models of COVID-19, prompting clinical trials, in which initial results indicated a significant effect against the disease. However, subsequent clinical studies did not confirm these findings, leading to the refusal of molnupiravir for permanent market authorization in many countries. This report critically assessed 22 studies published in 18 reports that investigated the efficacy of molnupiravir in animal models of COVID-19, with the purpose of determining how well the design of these models informed human studies. We found that the administered doses of molnupiravir in most studies involving animal COVID-19 models were disproportionately higher than the dose recommended for human use. Specifically, when adjusted for body surface area, over half of the doses of molnupiravir used in the animal studies exceeded twice the human dose. Direct comparison of reported drug exposure across species after oral administration of molnupiravir indicated that the antiviral efficacy of the dose recommended for human use was underestimated in some animal models and overestimated in others. Frequently, molnupiravir was given prophylactically or shortly after SARS-CoV-2 inoculation in these models, in contrast to clinical trials where such timing is not consistently achieved. Furthermore, the recommended five-day treatment duration for humans was exceeded in several animal studies. Collectively, we suggest that design elements in the animal studies under examination contributed to a preference favoring molnupiravir, and thus inflated expectations for its efficacy against COVID-19. Addressing these elements may offer strategies to enhance the clinical efficacy of molnupiravir for the treatment of COVID-19. Small-scale private forests cover large areas in Europe and often contain structures and habitats of high nature conservation value that are increasingly put under pressure due to a rising interest in fuelwood and wood products. We investigate the distribution of variables like living tree and deadwood volumes, management intensity, diversity and density of tree-related microhabitats recorded in 81 small-scale private forest parcels in the Lower Saxon Hills (northwest Germany). We provide an assessment of the influence of predictors like the individual forest owners' goals and activities, as stated by them in a quantitative survey, as well as landscape parameters like parcel size, slope, landscape fragmentation and forest continuity. Our results indicate that there are two types of structures of conservation value in small-scale private forests: slowly evolving structures (type A) like large-diameter living trees and tree-related microhabitats which mostly depend on landscape parameters that act on longer time scales, and fast evolving structures (type B) like deadwood that are influenced by both owner attitudes and landscape parameters. The resulting implications for integrative forest and conservation management are discussed. When considering the conservation of the slowly evolving type A structures, long-term commitments to conservation legislation, financial incentives and generation-spanning education of forest owners are necessary. Efforts to promote the faster evolving type B structures might prove particularly advantageous in small-scale private forests given the structural diversity of the stands, but also the often strong identification of owners with their land. Background and Aims: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) has a rapid clinical effect which cannot be explained by remyelination during each treatment cycle in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). This study aimed to investigate axonal membrane properties during the IVIg treatment cycle and their potential correlation with clinically relevant functional measurements. Methods: Motor nerve excitability testing (NET) of the median nerve was performed before and 4 and 18 days after initiation of an IVIg treatment cycle in 13 treatment‐naïve (early) CIDP patients and 24 CIDP patients with long term (late) IVIg treatment, 12 CIDP patients treated with subcutaneous immunoglobulin (SCIg) and 55 healthy controls. Clinical function was measured extensively using the Six Spot Step test, 10‐Meter Walk test, 9‐Hole Peg test, grip strength, MRC sum score, Overall Neuropathy Limitations Score and Patient Global Impression of Change. Results: Superexcitability and S2 accommodation decreased significantly in the early treatment group from baseline to day 4 and returned to baseline levels at day 18, suggesting temporary depolarization of the axonal membrane. A similar trend was observed for the late IVIg group. Substantial clinical improvement was observed in both early and late IVIg groups during the entire treatment cycle. No statistically significant correlation was found between clinical and NET changes. No change was found in NET or clinical function in the SCIg group or controls. Interpretation: NET suggested temporary depolarization of the axonal membrane during IVIg treatment in treatment naïve CIDP patients. Graduate education is an important aspect of the life of most academic scientists and a serious responsibility because it comes with the obligation to help students achieve their career and life goals. It can also be very fulfilling for the graduate mentor in terms of personal satisfaction and advancement of the research program. Learning to be a good major professor is an active process that depends on developing a formal framework of education and modifying that framework for each student based on past experiences and experimentation, advice from colleagues, and the individual personality of the student. Perhaps most important is for the graduate mentor to buy into the success and well-being of the student. Among the characteristics that a major professor could seek to instill in his or her students are critical and independent thinking, self-confidence, a thick skin, teamwork, laboratory skills and understanding, and the ability for hard work. Work to make science joyful by celebrating accomplishments, creating a fun environment in the lab, and stressing the societal value of science as compared to personal rewards or ambition. Recovery from wildfire is often cast as the rebuilding of homes by the displaced. This focus ignores the diversity of livelihoods and access to resources among people living in the wildland-urban interface. The 2018 Camp Fire in Butte County, northern California, invites the rethinking of vulnerability and wildfire. Almost an entire town of 27,000 was destroyed, as well as long-established surrounding rural communities. The extent of devastation and displacement has revealed the shortcoming of a perspective of victimhood that focuses on property ownership. We challenge this bias that equates community with property ownership with three sources of data that, although limited, allow for a more granular view of the diversity of displacement and the ongoing vulnerability that exists in the shadows of the rebuild. Background: Although a central role of the thalamus for sleep regulation is undisputed, the exact localization of the crucial structures within the thalamus remains controversial.Case Presentation: Here we report a 35 year old woman with no prior comorbidities who developed severe and persistent hypersomnia with long sleep time after a small right-sided MRI-verified thalamic stroke affecting the dorsal part of the pulvinar and the dorsolateral boarders of the dorsomedial nuclei.Conclusion: The observed symptoms suggest a crucial role of posterior thalamus but not the midline parts of the thalamus in sleep-wake control. Typically, bovine embryos are transferred into recipient females about day 7 after estrus or anticipated ovulation, when the embryo has reached the blastocyst stage of development. All the biological and technical causes for failure of a female to produce a blastocyst 7 d after natural or artificial insemination (AI) are avoided when a blastocyst-stage embryo is transferred into the female. It is reasonable to expect, therefore, that pregnancy success would be higher for embryo transfer (ET) recipients than for inseminated females. This expectation is not usually met unless the recipient is exposed to heat stress or is classified as a repeat-breeder female. Rather, pregnancy success is generally similar for ET and AI. The implication is that either one or more of the technical aspects of ET have not yet been optimized or that underlying female fertility that causes an embryo to die before day 7 also causes it to die later in pregnancy. Improvements in pregnancy success after ET will depend upon making a better embryo, improving uterine receptivity, and forging new tools for production and transfer of embryos. Key to accelerating progress in improving pregnancy rates will be the identification of phenotypes or phenomes that allow the prediction of embryo competence for survival and maternal capacity to support embryonic development. In cattle, genetic variation exists in regulation of body temperature and stabilization of cellular function during heat stress. There are opportunities to reduce the impact of heat stress on cattle production by identifying the causative mutations responsible for genetic variation in thermotolerance and transferring specific alleles that confer thermotolerance to breeds not adapted to hot climates. An example of a mutation conferring superior ability to regulate body temperature is the group of frame-sift mutations in the prolactin receptor gene (PRLR) that lead to a truncated receptor and development of cattle with a short, sleek hair coat. Slick mutations in PRLR have been found in several extant breeds derived from criollo cattle. The slick mutation in Senepol cattle has been introgressed into dairy cattle in Puerto Rico, Florida and New Zealand. An example of a mutation that confers cellular protection against elevated body temperature is a deletion mutation in the promoter region of a heat shock protein 70 gene called HSPA1L. Inheritance of the mutation results in amplification of the transcriptional response of HSPA1L to heat shock and increased cell survival. The case of PRLR provides a promising example of the efficacy of the genetic approach outlined in this paper. We explored factors associated with performance on the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). 180 undergraduate students completed the human RMET requiring forced-choice mental state judgment; a control human Age Eyes Test (AET) requiring age judgment; a Cat Eyes Test (CET) requiring mental state judgment; and measures of executive function, empathy and psychopathology. Versions of the CET and AET were created that matched the RMET for difficulty (accuracy 71%). RMET and CET performance were strongly correlated after accounting for AET performance. Working memory, schizotypal personality and empathy predicted RMET accuracy but not CET scores. Liking dogs predicted higher accuracy on all eyes tasks, whereas liking cats predicted greater mentalizing but reduced emotional expression. Importantly, we replicated our core findings relating to accuracy and correlations between the CET and RMET in a second sample of 228 students. In conclusion, people can apply similar skills when interpreting cat and human expressions. As RMET and CET performance were found to be differentially affected by executive function and psychopathology, the use of social cognitive measures featuring non-human animals may be of particular use in future clinical research. • What is already known on this topic. • Unsubstantiated safety scares have been associated with large declines in HPV vaccine uptake in several countries. • Few documented examples exist of national vaccination programs recovering from such declines. • What this study adds. • HPV vaccine uptake in Denmark declined after negative media coverage and partially recovered after a national information campaign. • Communication by national public health authorities may be a key to averting declines in vaccine coverage. Immunization programs' resilience to shocks is central to their success, but little empirical evidence documents resilience in action. We sought to characterize the decline of HPV vaccination in Denmark after negative media coverage and recovery during a national information campaign. We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study of all girls born in Denmark from 1997 to 2006 (N = 328,779), aged 12–15. The outcome measure was HPV vaccine uptake (first dose), as reported to the Danish national health registry from 2009 to 2019, when HPV vaccine was freely available to girls in primary care clinics in Denmark. Events that created 4 natural time periods for study were HPV vaccine reaching the uptake of other vaccines in the national program (2009), some negative media coverage of HPV vaccination (2013), extensive negative media coverage (2015), and a national information campaign about the vaccine's safety and effectiveness (2017–2019). In the period with some negative media coverage, HPV vaccine uptake fell to 83.6% (95% CI:78.0%–89.7%) of baseline uptake. In the period with extensive negative media coverage, uptake fell even further to 49.6% (95% CI:44.5%–55.2%) of baseline uptake. After the information campaign, HPV vaccine uptake recovered to its baseline level (109.2%, 95% CI:90.1%–132.4%) due in part to catch-up doses. Despite the recovery, an estimated 26,000 fewer girls initiated the vaccine than if uptake had not declined. The experience in Denmark offers one of the first opportunities to document how a nation grappled with negative media coverage of HPV vaccination and the steadying impact of action by national authorities. Psoriasis is a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease. The inflammatory response is driven by T cells and mediated by multiple cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor and the interleukins IL-17 and IL-23. Moderate-to-severe psoriasis is treated systemically, using either biologics or conventional treatments with small-molecule drugs. The newer biologics are very effective and well tolerated, but not all patients respond to treatment with biologics, so there is a need for new treatment options for psoriasis. Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors are a new drug class that may be of use in this respect. These inhibitors are already on the market for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. They block the intracellular signal pathway mediated by JAK and signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) proteins, thereby inhibiting gene transcription of proinflammatory cytokines. JAK inhibitors are currently being tested as potential treatments for psoriasis. They have shown clinical efficacy as measured by the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index 75 response in both phase 2 and 3 trials, and appear to be well tolerated overall. This review provides an overview of the mechanisms underlying the actions of JAK inhibitors in psoriasis, together with the results of clinical trials testing their efficacies when used to treat the disease. Background: Primary indication for catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) is to reduce symptoms and improve health‐related quality of life (HRQoL). There are data showing differences between the genders and between younger and older patients. To evaluate this, we studied a large Scandinavian cohort of patients referred for catheter ablation of AF. Methods: Consecutive patients filled out the ASTA questionnaire, assessing symptoms, HRQoL, and perception of arrhythmia, prior to ablation. Patients were recruited from four Swedish and one Danish tertiary center. Results: A total of 2493 patients (72% men) filled out the ASTA questionnaire. Women experienced eight of the nine ASTA scale symptoms more often than men. Patients <65 years reported four symptoms more often, only tiredness was more frequent in those ≥65 years (P = .007). Women and patients <65 years experienced more often palpitations and regarding close to fainting and this was more common among women, no age differences were seen. Women and men scored differently in 10 of the 13 HRQoL items. Only negative impact on sexual life was more common in men (P < .001). Older patients reported more negative influence in four of the HRQoL items and the younger in one; ability to concentrate. Conclusions: Women experienced a more pronounced symptom burden and were more negatively affected in all HRQoL concerns, except for the negative impact on sexual life, where men reported more influence of AF. Differences between age groups were less pronounced. Disease‐specific patient‐reported outcomes measures (PROMs) add important information where gender differences should be considered in the care. The optimal medical treatment in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and right-sided heart failure (RHF) is unknown. We aimed to estimate the risks of all-cause mortality associated with the current clinical use of various cardiovascular drugs in this patient-group. We followed all patients with registered COPD and RHF (defined as a diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension plus use of loop-diuretics) for the risk of all-cause mortality (Jan 1, 1995 to Dec 31, 2015) using the Danish nationwide administrative registries. The association between mortality and claimed prescriptions for cardiovascular drugs was assessed by multivariable Cox regression models. 5991 patients (mean age 74 ± standard deviation 10 years, 51% women) were included. Of these, 1440 (24%) used beta-blockers, 2149 (36%) renin-angiotensin system inhibitors [RASi], 1340 (22%) oral anticoagulants, 1376 (23%) calcium channel blockers, 1194 (20%) statins, 1824 (30%) spironolactone, and 2099 (35%) low-dose aspirin. During an average follow-up of 2.2 years (±standard deviation 2.8, min-max 0–19.6 years), 5071 (85%) died, corresponding to a mortality rate of 38 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 37–39). Compared to no use, beta-blockers were associated with adjusted hazards ratio 0.90 (95% confidence interval 0.84–0.98), RASi 0.92 (0.86–0.98), calcium channel blockers 0.86 (0.80–0.92), spironolactone 1.17 (1.10–1.24), statins 0.85 (0.78–0.92), oral anticoagulants 0.87 (0.79–0.95), and aspirin 0.99 (0.93–1.05). Propensity-score matched analyses and inverse-probability-weighted models yielded similar results. Several cardiovascular drugs may be associated with lowered mortality in COPD and RHF. Network structures within the public sector have an expansion at present, producing a new administrative reality. In the context of the Brazilian public sector, it is still a relatively unexplored subject. The public institution responsible for proceed health regulation in Brazil is the National Agency of Supplemental Health (ANS). Other government agencies that interact in this process include the Orientation Program and Consumer Protection (OPCP), Public Ministry, Public Defender's Office and the Judiciary. However, the activities of these agencies are not integrated. The aim of this study is to analyze the conditions for the creation of a network between public agencies that participate in the regulatory process of supplemental health in Rio Grande do Sul. For this, a qualitative, exploratory research was conducted, adopting a case study strategy. Data were collected through interviews with managers of public agencies involved in the regulation of the supplemental health. The analysis was based on nine categories proposed as necessary conditions for the creation of the network - receptivity, stimulation, trust, cooperation, political support, operational technical support, articulated organization, coordination instruments, and constant and lasting interaction. The survey results show that respondents envisage effective possibilities of earnings from network operations, including greater effectiveness of the supplemental health regulation. However, they do not have much distinctness about the aspects that involve working in networks, which requires better understanding of the subject. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and studies with coronary computed tomography have suggested increased rates of asymptomatic CAD determined by the coronary calcium score (CCS) in these patients. To synthesize the evidence on this topic, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature. A systematic review was performed of data comparing the prevalence and burden of asymptomatic CAD in RA and controls using CCS with or without coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA). For the meta-analysis, pooled data provided the estimated risk ratio (RR) of CAD and weighted mean differences of CCS in patients with RA compared to controls. The search revealed 1841 results of which 1083 were screened and 26 full text papers were evaluated. Eight studies were included with data on 788 patients with RA and 1641 controls. Patients with RA had significantly increased risk of CAD (RR = 1.26 [95% CI 1.04–1.52]; p =.021) and increased weighted mean differences for CCS (48.25 [95% CI 26.97–69.53]; p <.001) compared to controls. Limited evidence suggested that patients with RA had a higher prevalence of moderate-severe (CCS > 100) CAD and more multivessel CAD, and RA duration and disease activity were associated with higher CCS, RA disease activity was linked with presence of high risk (non-calcified or mixed) coronary plaques, and treatment with methotrexate was tied to absence of CAD, respectively. Background: Target enrichment combined with chromosome conformation capturing methodologies such as capture Hi-C (CHC) can be used to investigate spatial layouts of genomic regions with high resolution and at scalable costs. A common application of CHC is the investigation of regulatory elements that are in contact with promoters, but CHC can be used for a range of other applications. Therefore, probe design for CHC needs to be adapted to experimental needs, but no flexible tool is currently available for this purpose. Results: We present a Java desktop application called GOPHER (Generator Of Probes for capture Hi-C Experiments at high Resolution) that implements three strategies for CHC probe design. GOPHER's simple approach is similar to the probe design of previous approaches that employ CHC to investigate all promoters, with one probe being placed at each margin of a single digest that overlaps the transcription start site (TSS) of each promoter. GOPHER's simple-patched approach extends this methodology with a heuristic that improves coverage of viewpoints in which the TSS is located near to one of the boundaries of the digest. GOPHER's extended approach is intended mainly for focused investigations of smaller gene sets. GOPHER can also be used to design probes for regions other than TSS such as GWAS hits or large blocks of genomic sequence. GOPHER additionally provides a number of features that allow users to visualize and edit viewpoints, and outputs a range of files useful for documentation, ordering probes, and downstream analysis. Conclusion: GOPHER is an easy-to-use and robust desktop application for CHC probe design. AtriClip device has demonstrated an excellent efficacy, long-term durability and safety of left atrium appendage (LAA) closure. We report, the unexpected postoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) finding of thrombi in left atrium (LA)after deployment of an AtriClip in a 73-year-old man with chronic atrial fibrillation and 3-vessel-coronary artery disease undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery and LA appendage ligation. The heart was re-arrested and thrombi were retrieve successfully through a left atriotomy. This case emphasizes the unanticipated role of AtriClip in dislodging the thrombus from LAA, in addition to the importance of sufficient and wellfounded imaging (Transesophageal Echocardiogram/Multidetector Computed Tomography) before and after the deployment of AtriClip device. Heat stress is a cause of major economic losses to cattle producers, especially in tropical and subtropical environments. The objectives of this study were to assess the phenotypic variability in core body temperature and sweating rate and to evaluate the effect of coat type, temperament, and BW on core body temperature and sweating rate in Brangus heifers. During August and September of 2016, 725 Brangus heifers were evaluated on pasture in four separate groups (n = 200, 189, 197, and 139). Environmental measurements of dry bulb temperature (Tdb) and relative humidity (RH) were measured every 15 min during the entire time of data collection and the temperature-humidity index (THI) was used to quantify heat-stress potential. Coat score, sweating rate, chute score, exit score, and live weight were recorded as the animals passed through the chute. Vaginal temperature was recorded every 5 min for five consecutive days. There was significant variation in vaginal temperature between heifers in the same environmental conditions (s² u = 0.049), suggesting opportunities for selective improvements. A repeatability of 0.47 and 0.44 was estimated for sweating rate and vaginal temperature, respectively, suggesting that one measurement would be able to adequately describe the sweating capacity or ability to control the body temperature of an individual. Vaginal temperature increased as THI increased, with approximately 1 h lag time in the animal's response. Vaginal temperature (-0.047 °C, P = 0.015) and sweating rate were lower (-5.49 ± 2.12 g/(m2·h), P < 0.01) for heifers that demonstrated a calmer behavior in the chute. Animals with shorter, smoother hair coats had significantly lower vaginal temperatures when compared to animals with longer hair coats (P < 0.01). Also, heavier heifers in this study maintained lower (P < 0.0001) vaginal temperature than the lighter heifers. Visual attention allows the allocation of limited neural processing resources to stimuli based on their behavioral priorities. The selection of task-relevant visual targets entails the processing of multiple competing stimuli and the suppression of distractors that may be either perceptually salient or perceptually similar to targets. The posterior parietal cortex controls the interaction between top–down (task-driven) and bottom–up (stimulus-driven) processes competing for attentional selection, as well as spatial distribution of attention. Here, we examined whether biparietal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) would modulate the interaction between top–down and bottom–up processes in visual attention. Visual attention function was assessed with a visual discrimination task, in which a lateralized target was presented alone or together with a contralateral, similar or salient, distractor. The accuracy and RTs were measured before and during three stimulation sessions (sham, right anodal/left cathodal, left anodal/right cathodal). The analyses demonstrated (i) polarity-dependent effects of tDCS on the accuracy of target discrimination, but only when the target was presented with a similar distractor; (ii) the tDCS-triggered effects on the accuracy of discriminating targets, accompanied by a similar distractor, varied according to the target location; and (iii) overall detrimental effects of tDCS on RTs were observed, regardless of target location, distractor type, and polarity of the stimulation. We conclude that the observed polarity, distractor type, and target location-dependent effects of biparietal tDCS on the accuracy of target detection resulted from both a modulation of the interaction between top–down and bottom–up attentional processes and the interhemispheric competition mechanisms guiding attentional selection and spatial deployment of attention. Aim: Warfarin is a cornerstone for the prevention of thromboembolism in atrial fibrillation (AF), and several efforts have been taken to increase its usage and safety, including risk stratification schemes. Our aim was to investigate the temporal trends in initiation of warfarin and its effects on incidence of bleeding and thromboembolism in patients with new-onset atrial fibrillation 1996–2011. Methods: All patients with a first-time diagnosis of non-valvular atrial fibrillation were identified from nationwide administrative registries. Trends were determined by linear regression. Results: In total 153,682 patients were included. Initiation of warfarin increased from 14% to 41% (p<0.0001). Events of thromboembolism decreased from 3.9% to 2.6% annually (p<0.0001). The greatest decline in thromboembolic events was observed for patients with a CHA2DS2VASc score >1, where the annual decline was -0.12% (95%CI: -0.161; -0.084)) for those treated with warfarin and -0.073% (95%CI: -0.116;-0.030)) for those not treated with warfarin. Bleeding increased from 3.3% to 3.9% (p = 0.043). For those with a CHA2DS2VASc score >1 annual bleeding rates increased by 0.095% (95%CI: -0.025; -0.165) in warfarin treated and by 0.056% (95%CI: -0.013; -0.100) in patients not treated with warfarin. Conclusion: Warfarin use increased by nearly a 3-fold between 1996 and 2011. During the same period, thromboembolic events declined by a third and bleeding increased by a fifth, suggesting a beneficial effect associated with higher warfarin use. Anovel tool has been developed to automate the process of locating the isocenter, center of rotation, and sphere of confusion of a proton therapy gantry. The tool uses a Radian laser tracker to estimate how the coordinate frame of the front-end beam-line components changes as the gantry rotates. The coordinate frames serve as an empirical model of gantry flexing. Using this model, the alignment of the front and back-end beam-line components can be chosen to minimize the sphere of confusion, improving the overall beam positioning accuracy of the gantry. Background: In the Difficult Airway Society's 2015 "cannot intubate, cannot oxygenate" guideline, the emergency cricothyroidotomy is the final option when managing an unanticipated difficult airway. How often training for maintenance of this skill is required for anesthesiologists remains unknown. We aimed to assess if specialist‐trained anesthesiologists' skills improved from a brush‐up intervention and if skills were retained after 3 months. Methods: In this multicenter, randomized, controlled trial, participants were randomized to either a simulation‐based brush‐up or no brush‐up. Both groups performed a mannequin‐based technical skills emergency cricothyroidotomy test twice and were assessed by a blinded rater using a structured assessment tool that included time, positioning, palpation, appropriate employment of instruments, and stepwise progression. After 3 months of non‐training, participants completed identical tests of retention. Results: A total of 54 anesthesiologists were included from three hospitals in the Region of Southern Denmark. Thirty‐seven percent of the participants had received skills training in emergency cricothyroidotomy in the prior 12 months. The intervention group (N = 27) performed better in the initial tests, with a mean time of 51.5 s (SD = 10.82), a total score per minute of 15.9 points (SD = 4.91), and 93% passing both initial tests compared to the control group (N = 27) with a mean time of 76.8 s (SD = 35.82), a total score per minute of 6.6 (SD = 4.68) and only 15% passing both initial tests. The intervention group managed to retain overall performance in retention tests in terms of performance time (48.9 s, p =.26), total score per minute (13.6 points, p =.094), and passing the tests (75%, p =.059). Conclusion: Exposure to simulation‐based brush‐up training in emergency cricothyroidotomy improved anesthesiologists' technical performance and was overall retained after 3 months. Some loss of skill concerning specific items was observed, highlighting the need for regular training in emergency cricothyroidotomy. Valve frame infolding (VFI) is a rare complication (1-3%) of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), which primarily occurs in large sized self-expanding valves. We report the incidence of VFI in a small group of patients with highly calcified and extra-large aortic annuli, who underwent implantation of the newer generation 34mm Medtronic Evolut Pro+ (EP+) valve system. A retrospective review was conducted on all patients presenting to a single centre experienced with TAVI in Sydney, NSW, Australia, between June and October 2022, for transfemoral TAVI using the Medtronic 34mm EP+ valve system. VFI was diagnosed using fluoroscopy, and pre-procedure computed tomography (CT) was analysed offline. VFI occurred in four of 10 patients who underwent TAVI using the 34mm EP+ system. Between VFI and non-VFI patients, the annular size, aortic angulation and total calcium volume was similar. Calcium distribution between the coronary cusps was symmetrical in non-VFI patients (37%, 33% and 30%), compared to 52% in the non-coronary cusp (NCC) in VFI patients. The mean ellipticity index was higher in VFI versus non-VFI patients (22% vs 14%). The 34mm Medtronic EP+ valve system is vital for safe and effective treatment of a niche subgroup of patients with extra-large annuli and extensive calcification, however operators should be aware of the increased incidence of VFI. Heavy eccentric calcification at the NCC, as well as using the cusp-overlap implant technique may exacerbate VFI, while multiplanar fluoroscopic screening may improve recognition. Aim In a previous study, we found a positive association between statin use and polyneuropathy risk. Other studies reported equivocal results. The present study aimed to confirm our findings with a design similar to that used in our previous study but with a larger data set. Methods We searched medical registry data to identify patients diagnosed with incident polyneuropathy of no known cause (idiopathic polyneuropathy) between 1999 and 2013; we verified diagnoses through medical records. For each case, we recruited 20 general population controls with no previous history of polyneuropathy. Controls were matched to their respective case for age and gender. We ascertained the prior statin use of cases and controls through a prescription registry. Based on this information, exposure to statins was categorized into 'ever use' or 'never use'. Ever use of statins was classified by how recently they had been used ('current use' or 'past use'); current use was further classified into long-term use (5+ years) and high- or low-intensity use. We used conditional logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to examine associations between polyneuropathy and statin use. Results We included 370 validated cases and 7400 controls. Ever use of statins was not associated with an elevated risk of polyneuropathy (OR 1.14, 95% CI 0.84, 1.54). Similarly, we found no associations between polyneuropathy risk and current use (OR 1.11, 95% CI 0.79, 1.53), long-term use (OR 1.13, 95% CI 0.66, 1.92) or high-intensity statin use (OR 1.05, 95% CI 0.59, 1.84). Abnormal fetuses, neonates, and adult offspring derived by assisted reproductive technologies have been reported in humans and mice and have been associated with increased likelihood of certain adult diseases. To test the hypothesis that bovine females derived by assisted reproductive technologies have altered postnatal growth and adult function, a retrospective cohort study evaluated survival, growth, and production traits of offspring derived by in vitro embryo production (IVP) with conventional (IVP-conv) or reverse X-sorted semen (IVP-sexed), multiple ovulation and embryo transfer, and artificial insemination (AI) in a large dairy herd. Live calves produced by IVP were born slightly heavier compared with AI calves. In addition, IVP-sexed calves had a higher cumulative mortality from 90 to 180 d of age compared with AI offspring. Mortality of IVP-conv and multiple ovulation and embryo transfer offspring was intermediate and not different from AI or IVP-sexed offspring. The altered phenotype of offspring from IVP-sexed extended to adult milk production. Cows derived by IVP-sexed produced less milk, fat, and protein in their first lactation compared with dairy cows derived by AI. Additionally, females born to nulliparous dams had a distinct postnatal phenotype compared with offspring from parous dams even when data were restricted to offspring of surrogate females. In conclusion, procedures associated with in vitro production of embryos involving use of reverse-sorted spermatozoa for fertilization result in an alteration of embryonic programming that persists postnatally and causes an effect on milk production in adulthood. Mounting evidence indicates that posterolateral portions of the cerebellum (right Crus I/II) contribute to language processing, hut the nature of this role remains unclear. Based on a well-supported theory of cerebellar motor function, which ascribes to the cerebellum a role in short-term prediction through internal modeling, we hypothesize that right cerebellar Crus I/II supports prediction of upcoming sentence content. We tested this hypothesis using event-related fMRI in male and female human subjects by manipulating the predictability of written sentences. Our design controlled for motor planning and execution, as well as for linguistic features and working memory load; it also allowed separation of the prediction interval from the presentation of the final sentence item. In addition, three further fMRI tasks captured semantic, phonological, and orthographic processing to shed light on the nature of the information processed. As hypothesized, activity in right posterolateral cerebellum correlated with the predictability of the upcoming target word. This cerebellar region also responded to prediction error during the outcome of the trial. Further, this region was engaged in phonological, but not semantic or orthographic, processing. This is the first imaging study to demonstrate a right cerebellar contribution in language comprehension independently from motor, cognitive, and linguistic confounds. These results complement our work using other methodologies showing cerebellar engagement in linguistic prediction and suggest that internal modeling of phonological representations aids language production and comprehension. Purpose: Implantation of the mammalian embryo in the uterus is preceded by escape from the zona pellucida. In some species, hatching from the zona occurs preferentially from one or the other poles of the embryo. The situation for the bovine embryo, in which hatching precedes attachment to the uterus by more than a week, is unclear. The purpose was to describe whether hatching of the bovine embryo from the zona pellucida occurs preferentially from the embryonic or abembryonic pole. Methods: Bovine blastocysts undergoing hatching were examined by light microscopy ( n = 84) and epifluorescence imaging using antibodies for markers of epiblast, hypoblast, and trophectoderm (TE) ( n = 26). The location of hatching was classified as being at the embryonic pole, if hatching occurred ipsilateral to the inner cell mass (ICM), or abembryonic, if hatching occurred contralateral to the ICM. Results: A total of 55% of blastocysts exited the zona pellucida through an opening at the embryonic pole. In these cases, 68% of the cells emerging through the zona pellucida were derived from the ICM. The remainder of blastocysts hatched from an opening either contralateral or to the side of the ICM. In these cases, 87% of hatched cells were TE. Conclusion: For the bovine embryo, there is nearly equal probability of hatching from the embryonic or abembryonic poles. Given that the surface area of the zona pellucida in contact with the TE overlying the ICM is less than for the remainder of the blastocyst, there is some preference for hatching through the embryonic pole. Introduction Patients with psoriasis have increased risk of cardiovascular disease, but data on atopic dermatitis (AD) are less clear-cut. However, it is well-established that erectile dysfunction (ED) can serve as a risk marker for coronary disease. Aim To investigate the incidence, prevalence, and risk of ED in men with psoriasis and AD. Methods The sample included all Danish men at least 30 years old. In patients with AD and psoriasis, we determined disease severity based on use of systemic therapy. We performed a cross-sectional study (January 1, 2008) using logistic regression to estimate the prevalence and odds ratio of ED. Moreover, in a cohort study design, patients were followed from January 1, 2008 through December 31, 2012, and Cox regression models were used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios of new-onset ED. Models were adjusted for potential confounding factors, including age, socioeconomic status, health care consumption, smoking, alcohol abuse, diabetes, and cholesterol-lowering drug use. Main Outcome Measures The outcome was initiation of pharmacotherapy used for treatment of ED. Results The sample consisted of 1,756,679 Danish men (age range = 30–100 years), of which 2,373 and 26,536 had adult AD (mild = 1,072; severe = 1,301) and psoriasis (mild = 21,775; severe = 4,761), respectively. Mean ages (SDs) were 53.0 (14.6), 46.7 (12.0), and 56.3 (13.8) years for the general population, patients with AD, and patients with psoriasis, respectively. Prevalences of ED were 8.7%, 6.7%, and 12.8% for the general population, patients with AD, and patients with psoriasis, respectively. Adjusted odds ratios (logistic regression) of ED were decreased in patients with AD (0.68; 0.57–0.80) but increased in those with psoriasis (1.15; 1.11–1.20). Adjusted odds ratios for mild and severe AD were 0.63 (0.48–0.82) and 0.72 (0.58–0.88), respectively, and those for psoriasis these were 1.16 (1.11–1.21) and 1.13 (1.03–1.23). Adjusted hazard ratios (Cox regression) were 0.92 (0.76–1.11) for AD and 1.14 (1.08–1.20) for psoriasis. The ED risk was not increased in men with mild AD (0.85; 0.63–1.14) or severe AD (0.97; 0.76–1.24) but was significantly increased in men with mild psoriasis (1.13; 1.09–1.20) and severe psoriasis (1.17; 1.04–1.32). Conclusion We found an increased prevalence and risk of ED in men with psoriasis, whereas the risk was comparable to (and even slightly lower than) the general population for men with AD. Highly reliable situation awareness is a main driver to enhance safety via autonomous technology in the marine industry. Groundings, ship collisions and collisions with bridges illustrate the need for enhanced safety. Authority for a computer to suggest actions or to take command, would be able to avoid some accidents where human misjudgement was a core reason. Autonomous situation awareness need be conducted with extreme confidence to let a computer algorithm take command. The anticipation of how a situation can develop is by far the most difficult step in situation awareness, and anticipation is the subject of this article. The IMO International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS), describe the regulatory behaviours of marine vessels relative to each other, and correct interpretation of situations is instrumental to safe navigation. Based on a breakdown of COLREGS rules, this article presents a framework to represent manoeuvring behaviours that are expected when all vessels obey the rules. The article shows how nested finite automata can segregate situation assessment from decision making and provide a testable and repeatable algorithm. The suggested method makes it possible to anticipate own ship and other vessels' manoeuvring in a multi-vessel scenario. Background: ChIP-nexus, an extension of the ChIP-exo protocol, can be used to map the borders of protein-bound DNA sequences at nucleotide resolution, requires less input DNA and enables selective PCR duplicate removal using random barcodes. However, the use of random barcodes requires additional preprocessing of the mapping data, which complicates the computational analysis. To date, only a very limited number of software packages are available for the analysis of ChIP-exo data, which have not yet been systematically tested and compared on ChIP-nexus data. Results: Here, we present a comprehensive software package for ChIP-nexus data that exploits the random barcodes for selective removal of PCR duplicates and for quality control. Furthermore, we developed bespoke methods to estimate the width of the protected region resulting from protein-DNA binding and to infer binding positions from ChIP-nexus data. Finally, we applied our peak calling method as well as the two other methods MACE and MACS2 to the available ChIP-nexus data. Conclusions: The Q-nexus software is efficient and easy to use. Novel statistics about duplication rates in consideration of random barcodes are calculated. Our method for the estimation of the width of the protected region yields unbiased signatures that are highly reproducible for biological replicates and at the same time very specific for the respective factors analyzed. As judged by the irreproducible discovery rate (IDR), our peak calling algorithm shows a substantially better reproducibility. Background and aims Advanced age increases the risk of perioperative cardiovascular complications and may pose reluctance to subject elderly patients to surgery. We examined the impact of high age on perioperative major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and mortality in a nationwide cohort of patients undergoing elective surgery. Methods All Danish patients aged ≥ 20 years undergoing non-cardiac, elective surgery in 2005–2011 were identified from nationwide administrative registers. Risks of 30-day MACE (non-fatal ischemic stroke, non-fatal myocardial infarction, or cardiovascular death) and all-cause mortality were analyzed by multivariable logistic regression models (adjusted for comorbidities, revised cardiac risk index, cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, body mass index, and surgery type). Results A total of 386,818 procedures on 302,459 patients were included; mean age was 54.8 years (min–max 20–104), and 44% were men. A total of 1297 (0.34%) had perioperative MACE and 1449 (0.37%) died. Advanced age was associated with increased risks of MACE (odds ratio [OR], 1.87; 95% CI, 1.78–1.98 per 10-year high) and mortality (OR, 1.87; 95% CI, 1.78–1.96 per 10-year high). A total of 21,511 procedures were performed on patients > 80–90 years old, and 1662 on patients > 90 years. The numbers of MACE and crude mortality rates were 331 (1.7%) and 388 (2.0%) among > 80–90 years old, and 50 (3.0%) and 67 (4.0%) for those aged > 90 years. Conclusion The risk of mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events within 30 days after surgery increased with advanced age. Objective: Rosacea is a common chronic inflammatory skin disorder where upregulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) is observed. Notably, inflammation, MMPs, and AMPs are also involved in the etiopathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders including certain forms of dementia such as Alzheimer disease (AD). Based on several clinical observations, we investigated the association between rosacea and dementia, including AD in Danish registers.Methods: All Danish citizens aged ≥18 years between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 2012 were linked at the individual level through administrative registers. Cox regression was used to calculate unadjusted and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs).Results: The study comprised a total of 5,591,718 individuals, including 82,439 patients with rosacea. A total of 99,040 individuals developed dementia (any form) in the study period, of whom 29,193 were diagnosed with AD. The adjusted HRs of dementia and AD were 1.07 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.01-1.14), and 1.25 (95% CI = 1.14-1.37), respectively, in patients with rosacea. Stratified by sex, the HRs of AD were 1.28 (95% CI = 1.15-1.45) and 1.16 (95% CI = 1.00-1.35) in women and men, respectively. When results were stratified by age at study entry, the risk of AD was only significantly increased in individuals ≥60 years old (adjusted HR = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.08-1.32). When analyses were limited to patients with a hospital dermatologist diagnosis of rosacea only, the adjusted HRs of dementia and AD were 1.42 (95% CI = 1.17-1.72) and 1.92 (95% CI = 1.44-2.58), respectively.Interpretation: Rosacea is significantly associated with dementia, particularly AD. Brazil is going through a time of reflection about the preservation of natural resources, an issue that is increasingly considered in its agenda. The search for balance between environmental, social and economic aspects has been a challenge for business survival over the years and has led companies to adopt initiatives focused on sustainability. The objective of this article is to analyse how the international scientific production addresses sustainable practices and initiatives and their relationship with organizational performance. Considering this scope, a bibliometric study of the publications located on Web of Science - Social Sciences Citation Index (WoS-SSCI) was developed. There were 33 articles identified and selected on the subject. Journals that stand out in quantity of articles and number of citations are the Journal of Cleaner Production and Strategic Management Journal, respectively. Analysing the results, a growing concern about this issue and the increase in publications was noticed after the 2000s. The results found, in general, associate sustainable practices to positive organizational performance, such as increased profit on the product sold, quality improvement, improved reputation, and waste reduction, among others gains identified. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is common in patients with severe aortic stenosis undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), but its clinical relevance is controversial. At present, the optimal means of defining CAD in patients undergoing TAVI with respect to its prognostic implications and the assessment of myocardial ischaemia is not known. For this reason, the best treatment options are a matter for debate, and current guidelines do not recommend revascularization. As the indications for TAVI expand, the lack of any rigorous means of guiding coronary revascularization might negatively affect the clinical outcomes of future patients. In this Review, we summarize the methods of assessing CAD in TAVI populations, and the data on the safety and efficacy of percutaneous coronary intervention in patients undergoing TAVI. We discuss the putative effects of aortic stenosis on the functional assessment of CAD using pressure or flow wires or by noninvasive stress testing. We propose that a new, well-validated method of assessing CAD as a cause of myocardial ischaemia--which distinguishes it from myocardial infarction, previous revascularization, or non-flow-limiting disease--in patients with severe aortic stenosis is needed to guide revascularization in the current era of TAVI. The developmental program of the embryo displays a plasticity that can result in long-acting effects that extend into postnatal life. In mammals, adult phenotype can be altered by changes in the maternal environment during the preimplantation period. One characteristic of developmental programming during this time is that the change in adult phenotype is often different for female offspring than for male offspring. In this paper, we propose the hypothesis that sexual dimorphism in preimplantation programming is mediated, at least in part, by sex-specific responses of embryos to maternal regulatory molecules whose secretion is dependent on the maternal environment. The strongest evidence for this idea comes from the study of colony-stimulating factor 2 (CSF2). Expression of CSF2 from the oviduct and endometrium is modified by environmental factors of the mother, in particular seminal plasma and obesity. Additionally, CSF2 alters several properties of the preimplantation embryo and has been shown to alleviate negative consequences of culture of mouse embryos on postnatal phenotype in a sex-dependent manner. In cattle, exposure of preimplantation bovine embryos to CSF2 causes sex-specific changes in gene expression, interferon-τ secretion and DNA methylation later in pregnancy (day 15 of gestation). It is likely that several embryokines can alter postnatal phenotype through actions directed towards the preimplantation embryo. Identification of these molecules and elucidation of the mechanisms by which sexually-disparate programming is established will lead to new insights into the control and manipulation of embryonic development. Over the past 10 years, researchers have studied the effects of recreational football training as a health-promoting activity for participants across the lifespan. This has important public health implications as over 400 million people play football annually. Results from the first randomised controlled trial, published in the BJSM in January 2009, showed that football increased maximal oxygen uptake and muscle and bone mass, and lowered fat percentage and blood pressure, in untrained men, and since then more than 70 articles about football for health have been published, including publications in two supplements of the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports in 2010 and 2014, prior to the FIFA World Cup tournaments in South Africa and Brazil. While studies of football training effects have also been performed in women and children, this article reviews the current evidence linking recreational football training with favourable effects in the prevention and treatment of disease in adult men. Validating the integrity of pipes is an important task for safe natural gas production and many other operations (e.g. refineries, sewers, etc.). Indeed, there is a growing industry of actuated, actively driven mobile robots that are used to inspect pipes. Many rely on a remote operator to inspect data from a fisheye camera to perform manual inspection and provide no localization or mapping capability. In this work, we introduce a visual odometry-based system using calibrated fisheye imagery and sparse structured lighting to produce high-resolution 3D textured surface models of the inner pipe wall. Our work extends state-of-the-art visual odometry and mapping for fisheye systems to incorporate weak geometric constraints based on prior knowledge of the pipe components into a sparse bundle adjustment framework. These constraints prove essential for obtaining high-accuracy solutions given the limited spatial resolution of the fisheye system and challenging raw imagery. We show that sub-millimeter resolution modeling is viable even in pipes which are 400 mm (16”) in diameter, and that sparse range measurements from a structured lighting solution can be used to avoid the inevitable monocular scale drift. Reproduction is among the physiological functions in mammals most susceptible to disruption by hyperthermia. Many of the effects of heat stress on function of the oocyte and embryo involve direct effects of elevated temperature (i.e. heat shock) on cellular function. Mammals limit the effects of heat shock by tightly regulating body temperature. This ability is genetically controlled: lines of domestic animals have been developed with superior ability to regulate body temperature during heat stress. Through experimentation in cattle, it is also evident that there is genetic variation in the resistance of cells to the deleterious effects of elevated temperature. Several breeds that were developed in hot climates, including Bos indicus (Brahman, Gir, Nelore and Sahiwal) and Bos taurus (Romosinuano and Senepol) are more resistant to the effects of elevated temperature on cellular function than breeds that evolved in cooler climates (Angus, Holstein and Jersey). Genetic differences are expressed in the preimplantation embryo by Day 4-5 of development (after embryonic genome activation). It is not clear whether genetic differences are expressed in cells in which transcription is repressed (oocytes >100 µm in diameter or embryos at stages before embryonic genome activation). The molecular basis for cellular thermotolerance has also not been established, although there is some suggestion for involvement of heat shock protein 90 and the insulin-like growth factor 1 system. Given the availability of genomic tools for genetic selection, identification of genes controlling cellular resistance to elevated temperature could be followed by progress in selection for those genes within the populations in which they exist. It could also be possible to introduce genes from thermotolerant breeds into thermally sensitive breeds. Proper embryonic development depends upon regulatory signals from the reproductive tract called embryokines. This review uses the cow as a model to understand the developmental processes controlled by embryokines. The focus is on 3 embryokines that have been shown to increase competence of embryos to survive after transfer to recipients: CSF2, IGF1, and DKK1. Together, these molecules regulate key events required for development of the embryo to the blastocyst stage including proliferation (enhanced by IGF1), development of the inner cell mass (regulated by CSF2), control of differentiation (modified by DKK1), and inhibition of apoptosis and stress-mediated developmental arrest (IGF1 and CSF2). Medical ultrasound imaging using synthetic aperture sequential beamforming (SASB) has for the first time been used for clinical patient scanning. Nineteen patients with cancer of the liver (hepatocellular carcinoma or colorectal liver metastases) were scanned simultaneously with conventional ultrasound and SASB using a commercial ultrasound scanner and abdominal transducer. SASB allows implementation of the synthetic aperture technique on systems with restricted data handling capabilities due to a reduction in the data rate in the scanner by a factor of 64. The image quality is potentially maintained despite the data reduction. A total of 117 sequences were recorded and evaluated blinded by five radiologists from a clinical perspective. Forty-eight percent of the evaluations were in favor of SASB, 33% in favor of conventional ultrasound and 19 % were equal, that is, a clear, but non-significant trend favoring SASB over conventional ultrasound ( p = 0.18), despite the substantial data reduction. Volume flow in arteriovenous fistulas for hemodialysis was measured using the angle-independent ultrasound technique Vector Flow Imaging and compared with flow measurements using the ultrasound dilution technique during dialysis. Using an UltraView 800 ultrasound scanner (BK Medical, Herlev, Denmark) with a linear transducer, 20 arteriovenous fistulas were scanned directly on the most superficial part of the fistula just before dialysis. Vector Flow Imaging volume flow was estimated with two different approaches, using the maximum and the average flow velocities detected in the fistula. Flow was estimated to be 242 mL/min and 404 mL/min lower than the ultrasound dilution technique estimate, depending on the approach. The standard deviations of the two Vector Flow Imaging approaches were 175.9 mL/min and 164.8 mL/min compared with a standard deviation of 136.9 mL/min using the ultrasound dilution technique.
