We designed, fabricated, and measured anti-reflection coating (ARC) on sapphire that has 116% fractional bandwidth and transmission of at least 97% in the millimeter wave band. The ARC was based on patterning pyramid-like sub-wavelength structures (SWS) using ablation with a 15 W femto-second laser operating at 1030 nm. One side of each of two disks was fabricated with SWS that had a pitch of 0.54 mm and a height of 2 mm. The average ablation volume removal rate was 1.6 mm 3 /min. Measurements of the two-disk sandwich show transmission higher than 97% between 43 and 161 GHz. We characterize instrumental polarization (IP) arising from differential transmission due to asymmetric SWS. We find that with proper alignment of the two-disk sandwich, RMS IP across the band is predicted to be 0.07% at normal incidence and less than 0.6% at incidence angles up to 20 °. These results indicate that laser ablation of SWS on sapphire and on other hard materials such as alumina is an effective way to fabricate broadband ARC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present our work to develop and characterize low thermal conductance bolometers that are part of sinuous antenna multi-chroic pixels (SAMP). We use longer, thinner and meandered bolometer legs to achieve 9 pW/K thermal conductance bolometers. We also discuss the development of inductor-capacitor chips operated at 4 K to extend the multiplexing factor of the frequency domain multiplexing to 105, an increase of 60% compared to the factor currently demonstrated for this readout system. This technology development is motivated by EBEX-IDS, a balloon-borne polarimeter designed to characterize the polarization of foregrounds and to detect the primordial gravity waves through their B-mode signature on the polarization of the cosmic microwave background. EBEX-IDS will operate 20,562 transition edge sensor bolometers spread over 7 frequency bands between 150 and 360 GHz. Balloon and satellite platforms enable observations at frequencies inaccessible from the ground and with higher instantaneous sensitivity. We laser-ablated sub-wavelength structures (SWS) on 200 mm diameter birefringent sapphire disks to produce broadband anti-reflection coating (ARC). The disks were assembled into a stack of five plates making an achromatic half-wave plate (AHWP) suitable for operation between 40 and 140 GHz. We report on the SWS fabrication and transmission measurements of the stack at room temperature. From the measurements, we compute a band average transmission and modulation efficiency for nine spectral bands that correspond to the frequency coverage of the LiteBIRD Low-Frequency Telescope (LFT). We also assess the level of instrumental polarization the AHWP exhibits. We discuss paths for further development to minimize the instrumental polarization from the AHWP. The MAXIMA cosmic microwave background anisotropy experiment had a significant impact on cosmology. Results from the program have played a significant role in determining the geometry of the universe, given strong supporting evidence to inflation, and, in combination with other astrophysical data, showed that the universe is filled with dark matter and energy. We present a subset of the internal consistency checks that were carried out on the MAXIMA-1 data prior to their release, which demonstrate that systematics errors were much smaller than statistical errors. We also discuss the MAXIMA-2 flight and data, compare the maps of MAXIMA-1 and -2 in areas where they overlap and show that the two independent experiments confirm each other. All of these results demonstrate that MAXIMA mapped the cosmic microwave background anisotropy with high accuracy. To cite this article: R. Stompor et al., C. R. Physique 4 (2003). We present the design, optimization and laboratory characterization of an array of Lumped Element Kinetic Inductance Detectors sensitive in a frequency band centered at 350 GHz. The array consists of 313 feed-horn coupled pixels with resonant frequencies spread over 250 MHz. We present measured yield, quality factor, responsivity, quasiparticle lifetime, noise equivalent power and optical efficiency. The array is a prototype for one of the four frequency bands of OLIMPO, a balloon-borne instrument with a 2.6 m primary mirror proposed for an Antarctic flight to measure the Sunyaev–Zel'dovich effect in clusters of galaxies and their connecting filaments. We consider wavelets as a tool to perform a variety of tasks in the context of analysing cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps. Using spherical Haar wavelets, we define a position and angular-scale-dependent measure of power that can be used to assess the existence of spatial structure. We apply planar Daubechies wavelets for the identification and removal of point sources from small sections of sky maps. Our technique can successfully identify virtually all point sources that are above 3σ and more than 80 per cent of those above 1σ. We discuss the trade-offs between the levels of correct and false detections. We denoise and compress a 100 000-pixel CMB map by a factor of ∼10 in 5 s, achieving a noise reduction of about 35 per cent. In contrast to Wiener filtering, the compression process is model-independent and very fast. We discuss the usefulness of wavelets for power spectrum and cosmological-parameter estimation. We present a vacuum window mechanism that is useful for applications requiring two different vacuum windows in series, with one of them movable and resealable. Such applications include space borne instruments that can benefit from a thin vacuum window at low ambient pressures but must also have an optically open aperture at atmospheric pressures. We describe the implementation and successful operation with the E and B experiment balloon-borne payload, a millimeter-wave instrument designed to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation. Our group at UC Berkeley has produced the next generation of millimeter-wave spiderweb-absorber transition edge sensor (TES) bolometer technology, which was originally developed for the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment-Sunyaev Zel'dolvich (APEX-SZ) and South Pole Telescope (SPT) experiments. We will discuss the adaptation of this technology to a balloon-borne environment and to sub-millimeter wavelengths for the E and B Experiment (EBEX) and the Atacama Sub-millimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). Specifically, this proceedings will address the methods we used to increase the thermal contact between the TES and a heat capacity used to limit electrothermal bandwidth, increase the optical efficiency at sub-millimeter wavelengths by reducing the grid spacing of the spiderweb absorber, and reduce the saturation power of the bolometers by a factor of 4 compared to the lowest saturation power SPT bolometers by the altering the bolometer geometry. Frequency-domain multiplexing has been used for reading out ∼1000 detectors on the APEX-SZ and South Pole Telescope receiver for half a decade and produced many high-impact science papers. A new digital FPGA-based backend reduces the power consumption and system-size by an order of magnitude. This Digital Frequency-domain Multiplexer (DfMUX) was operated successfully in a space-like environment during the stratospheric balloon test-flight of the EBEX polarimeter, saw first light on the POLARBEAR experiment in 2010, and will be deployed for the South Pole Telescope polarimeter and ASTE sub-mm continuum camera. We are presently developing a new generation DfMUX targeting a factor 5 lower power consumption and robustness for satellite platforms. The system will incorporate new technology for identifying and correcting radiation induced errors in the FPGA logic, higher bandwidth to accommodate a multiplexing factor of 64, and Digital Active Nulling (DAN) feedback. We study the impact of the spectral dependence of the linear polarization rotation induced by an achromatic half-wave plate on measurements of cosmic microwave background polarization in the presence of astrophysical foregrounds. We focus on the systematic effects induced on the measurement of inflationary gravitational waves by uncertainties in the polarization and spectral index of Galactic dust. We find that for the experimental configuration and noise levels of the balloon-borne EBEX experiment, which has three frequency bands centered at 150, 250, and 410 GHz, a crude dust subtraction process mitigates systematic effects to below detectable levels for 10% polarized dust and tensor-to-scalar ratio of as low as r = 0.01. We also study the impact of uncertainties in the spectral response of the instrument. With a top-hat model of the spectral response for each band, characterized by band center and bandwidth, and with the same crude dust subtraction process, we find that these parameters need to be determined to within 1 and 0.8 GHz at 150 GHz; 9 and 2.0 GHz at 250 GHz; and 20 and 14 GHz at 410 GHz, respectively. We describe the Millimeter wave Anisotropy eXperiment IMaging Array (MAXIMA), a balloon-borne experiment which measured the temperature anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on angular scales of 10′ to 5°. MAXIMA mapped the CMB using 16 bolometric detectors in spectral bands centered at 150, 240, and 410 GHz, with 10′ resolution at all frequencies. The combined receiver sensitivity to CMB anisotropy was ~40 µK√s. The bolometric detectors, which were cooled to 100 mK, were a prototype of the detectors which will be used on the Planck Surveyor Satellite of the European Space Agency. Systematic parasitic contributions were controlled by using four uncorrelated spatial modulations, thorough cross-linking, multiple independent CMB observations, heavily baffled optics, and strong spectral discrimination. Pointing reconstruction was accurate to 1′, and absolute calibration was better than 4%. Two MAXIMA flights with more than 8.5 h of CMB observations have mapped a total of 300 deg² of the sky in regions of negligible known foreground emission. MAXIMA results have been released in previous publications and shown to be consistent with the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe. We discuss MAXIPOL, a bolometric balloon-borne experiment designed to measure the E-mode polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) on angular scales of 10′ to 2°. MAXIPOL is the first CMB experiment to collect data with a polarimeter that utilizes a rotating half-wave plate and fixed wire-grid polarizer. We present the instrument design, elaborate on the polarimeter strategy and show the instrument performance during flight with some time domain data. Our primary dataset was collected during a 26 h turnaround flight that was launched from the National Scientific Ballooning Facility in Ft. Sumner, New Mexico in May 2003. ABSTRACT We describe different methods for estimating the bispectrum of cosmic microwave background data. In particular, we construct a minimum-variance estimator for the flat-sky limit and compare results with previously studied frequentist methods. Application to the MAXIMA data set shows consistency with primordial Gaussianity. Weak quadratic non-Gaussianity is characterized by a tunable parameter f[sub NL] , corresponding to non-Gaussianity at a level of ∼10[sup -5]f[sub NL] (the ratio of non-Gaussian to Gaussian terms), and we find limits of f[sub NL]= 1500 ± 950 for the minimum-variance estimator and f[sub NL]= 2700 ± 1650 for the usual frequentist estimator. These are the tightest limits on primordial non-Gaussianity, which include the full effects of the radiation transfer function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use a frequentist statistical approach to set confidence intervals on the values of cosmological parameters using the MAXIMA-1 and COBE measurements of the angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background. We define a Δχ² statistic, simulate the measurements of MAXIMA-1 and COBE, determine the probability distribution of the statistic, and use it and the data to set confidence intervals on several cosmological parameters. We compare the frequentist confidence intervals with Bayesian credible regions. The frequentist and Bayesian approaches give best estimates for the parameters that agree within 15 per cent, and confidence interval widths that agree to within 30 per cent. The results also suggest that a frequentist analysis gives slightly broader confidence intervals than a Bayesian analysis. The frequentist analysis gives values of Ω = 089[sup +0.26, sub -0.19], Ω[sub B]h² = 0.026[sup + 0.020,sub 0.011] and n = 1.02[sup +0.31, sub -0.10], and the Bayesian analysis gives values of Ω = 0.98[sup +0.14, sub -0.19], Ω[sub B]h² = 0.029[sup +0.015, sub -0.010] and n = 1.18[sup +0.10, sub -0.23], all at the 95 per cent confidence level.
