We examined the association between walkability and blood lipids in a nationally representative sample of 29,649 participants aged 3–79 years who participated in the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) cycles 1 to 6. We focused on seven lipid biomarkers: apolipoprotein A (Apo A), apolipoprotein B (Apo B), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), total cholesterol (TC), and TC/HDL. Cross-sectional associations were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models incorporating survey-specific sampling weights. An increase in the Canadian Active Living Environments Index, a measure of neighborhood walkability, equivalent to the magnitude of its interquartile range (IQR) was associated with the following percentage (95% confidence intervals (CI)) changes in lipids: decreased TG, -2.85 (-4.77, -0.93) and TC/HDL, -1.68 (-2.80, -0.56), and increased HDL, 1.68 (0.93, 2.42). Significant effects were largely restricted to adults (aged 17 to 79). In the younger age group there were no significant associations between walkability and lipids in the fully adjusted model. Significant associations were more frequently seen in females than males. For females, fully adjusted significant inverse associations were observed for TG, LDL, and TC/HDL, and there were positive associations with HDL and Apo A. Canadians living in more walkable neighborhoods have more favorable lipid profiles, suggesting that the built environment has the potential to influence the risk profile for cardiovascular health, especially among adults and females. Current data suggest that oxidative stress may play an important role in the occurrence of acute central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), as chorioretinal integrity may be affected by disruption of the patient's metabolic redox balance, indicating the need for biomarkers. In addition to oxidative stress, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) dysfunction due to dyslipidemia can also lead to many types of physical discomfort. However, little is known about the pathophysiology of the disease resulting from oxidative stress and HDL dysfunction in CSC. The aim of this study was to investigate whether serum oxidative stress and HDL functionality markers have an impact on CSC disease. The case series of this study included 33 consecutive patients with treatment-naïve acute CSC. Thirty-five healthy volunteers of similar age were included in this study as non-CSC controls. Serum samples of the participants were taken and routine lipid values, serum Total Antioxidant Status (TAS), Total Oxidant Status (TOS), Oxidized Low Density Lipoprotein (ox-LDL), and Paraoxonase (PON1) levels were measured quantitatively. Serum oxidative stress index (OSI) was then calculated. Serum Ox-LDL, TOS and OSI levels in the acute CSC group, consisting of patients who had never been treated before and had no other disease, were statistically significantly higher than the control group. Conversely, serum PON1 and TAS levels were lower in CSC than in the control group. The relationship between CSC and deterioration in serum redox balance and decrease in PON1 activity, an important marker of HDL functionality, was demonstrated for the first time through this study. According to the literature, serum levels of these biomarkers, which identify acute/chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, have not been measured before in CSC disease. Background: Previous studies have shown significant associations between individual fat-soluble vitamins (FSVs) and metabolic syndromes (MetS). However, evidence on the multiple FSVs co-exposure and MetS odds is limited. Given that individuals are typically exposed to different levels of FSVs simultaneously, and FSVs can interact with each other. It's necessary to explore the association between multiple FSVs co-exposure and MetS odds. This study aims to address this gap in general U.S. adults aged ≥ 20 years. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANESs) 2003–2006 and 2017–2018. Three FSV, including vitamin A (VA), vitamin E (VE), and vitamin D (VD), and MetS diagnosed according to the ATP III guidelines were selected as exposure and outcome, respectively. Multivariable-adjusted logistic model was used to explore the associations of individual FSV exposure with MetS odds and MetS components. Restricted cubic splines were performed to explore the dose–response relationships among them. The quantile g-computation method was adopted to explore the associations of multiple FSVs co-exposure with MetS odds and MetS components. Results: The presented study included a total of 13,975 individuals, with 2400 (17.17%) were diagnosed with MetS. After adjusting for various confounders, a positive linear pattern was observed for serum VA and VE and MetS associations. Serum VD was found to be negatively associated with MetS in a linear dose–response way. For each component of MetS, higher serum VA and VE were associated with higher triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein; higher serum VD was negatively associated with triglyceride, blood pressure, and fasting plasma glucose. MetS odds increased by 15% and 13%, respectively, in response to one quartile increase in FSVs co-exposure index (qgcomp) in the conditional model (OR = 1.15, 95%CI: 1.06, 1.24) and the marginal structural model (OR = 1.13, 95%CI: 1.06, 1.20). Besides, co-exposure to VA, VE, and VD was positively associated with triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein, and blood pressure levels. Conclusion: Findings in the present study revealed that high serum VA and VE levels were associated with elevated MetS odds, while serum VD was inversely associated with MetS odds. There is ongoing debate about the impact of vitamin D on asthma. This research is focused on investigating the correlation between serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and asthma.This cross-sectional study comprised 22,708 eligible participants. Data on asthma and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2018 were analyzed. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were the main factor, with the presence of asthma as the outcome variable. Weighted logistic regression was utilized to investigate the relationship between serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and asthma, while accounting for factors such as age, gender, race, length of time in US, annual family income, education level, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, and cholesterol.Upon adjusting all variables in model III, epi-25-hydroxyvitamin D3 displayed a negative correlation with current asthma at the lower quartile Q1 (0.784, [0.697 to 0.922]), Q2 (0.841, [0.729 to 0.946]), Q3 (0.396, [0.240 to 0.653]) when compared to the highest quartile Q4 level. However, no significant difference was observed between asthma and 25-hydroxyvitamin D2, as well as 25-hydroxyvitamin D3.In the U.S. population, elevated levels of epi-25-hydroxyvitamin D3 are correlated with an increased risk of developing existing asthma. Background: Observational studies have found associations between sex hormones and metabolic syndrome(Mets), but the causal relationships remains unclear. This study utilizes univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) to elucidate the associations between sex hormones (including sex hormone-binding globulin(SHBG), estradiol(E2), testosterone(T)) and Mets and its subtypes (including waist circumference(WC), fasting blood glucose(FBG), high blood pressure(HBP), high-density lipoprotein(HDL-C), triglycerides(TG)). Methods: We utilized summary data from large-scale genome-wide association studies. Univariable Mendelian randomization (UMVMR) analysis was primarily conducted using the inverse variance weighted method (IVW), with secondary analyses employing the weighted median, MR-Egger regression, simple mode method, and weighted mode method. Subsequently, multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) was employed to assess the causal relationships between SHBG, T, E2, and MetS and its components: WC, FPG, HBP, HDL-C, and TG. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess result reliability. Results: Genetically predicted SHBG was significantly negatively associated with MetS (UMVMR: β=-0.72; 95% CI = 0.41 to 0.57; P = 1.28e-17; MVMR: β=-0.60; 95% CI=-0.83 to -0.38; P < 0.001). Positive causal relationships were observed between SHBG and WC(MVMR: β = 0.10; 95% CI = 0.03 to 0.17; P = 0.01) and HDL-C (MVMR: β = 0.41; 95% CI = 0.21 to 0.60; P < 0.001), while negative causal relationships were found between SHBG and HBP (MVMR: β=-0.02; 95% CI=-0.04 to -0.00; P = 0.02), TG (MVMR: β=-0.48; 95% CI=-0.70 to -0.26; P < 0.001). Background: Stroke is a non-communicable disease that causes sudden global or focal neurological disorders. It is one of the major public causes of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries, including Ethiopia. Early identification of the determinants and prompt intervention remains critical to reduce morbidity and mortality from stroke. Objective: The study aimed to identify determinants of stroke among adult hypertensive patients on follow up in Addis Ababa public hospitals, Ethiopia. Methods: Unmatched case-control study design was conducted among 326(109 cases and 217 controls) study participants in Addis Ababa public hospitals from September 1–30, 2021. The cases were adult hypertensive patients who developed a stroke and the controls were adult hypertensive patients. The study participants were selected by consecutive sampling technique. Pretested structured interviewer assisted questionnaire and checklist were used to collect data. Data were entered into Epi data version 3.1; exported and analysed by SPSS version 23. All independent variables with p-value < 0.25 in the bi-variable logistic regression analysis were entered into multivariable logistic regression analysis. Finally, variables with p-value <0.05 were considered as determinants of the stroke. Results: In this study, current cigarette smoker(AOR = 5.55, 95% CI: 2.48, 12.43), current alcohol drinker(AOR = 4.27, 95% CI: 1.94, 9.38), medication non-compliance(AOR = 3.23, 95% CI: 1.62, 6.44), uncontrolled systolic blood pressure (AOR = 3.42, 95% CI: 1.64, 7.16), uncontrolled diastolic blood pressure(AOR = 4.29, 95% CI: 2.06, 8.93), high low density lipoprotein(AOR = 6.89, 95% CI: 3.57, 13.35) and diabetic mellitus(AOR = 3.25, 95% CI: 1.58, 6.69) were more likely to develop a stroke. Conclusion and recommendation: Cigarette smoking, alcohol use, non-adherence to medication, uncontrolled systolic pressure, uncontrolled diastolic blood pressure, high low-density lipoprotein, and diabetic mellitus were determinants of stroke. Background/Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate the concentrations of follistatin and activin A in the serum of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and to assess their relationship with selected biochemical parameters, specifically stratifying the analysis based on tobacco smoke, insulin resistance, and abnormal weight. Methods: The research was carried out within a cohort of 88 women (60 women with and 28 without PCOS). Results: We observed significant differences (p < 0.05) in follistatin concentrations between women with PCOS stratified by homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values. These differences were consistent across both smoking and non-smoking subgroups with PCOS. Similar results were observed when comparing normal-weight women with PCOS to those with overweight or obesity. Additionally, activin A concentrations were significantly increased by higher body mass index (BMI) and HOMA-IR values in non-smoking women with PCOS. Moreover, we identified a negative correlation (r = −0.30; p < 0.023) between cotinine levels and Anti-Müllerian hormone. Among smoking women with PCOS, we noted decreased concentrations of sex hormone-binding globulin and high-density lipoproteins, alongside increased fasting glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, and free androgen index values. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that activin A and follistatin concentrations are more strongly influenced by disruptions in glucose metabolism and BMI than by tobacco smoke exposure. Background: Currently, most studies on the health benefits of traditional Chinese exercises on type 2 diabetes mellitus have explored the effects of a single type of traditional Chinese exercise on type 2 diabetes. Although a previous study evaluated the combined clinical effects of traditional Chinese exercises on type 2 diabetes, the studies included in that review were deficient in their study design. In addition, previous studies have not explored the ideal exercise dose that should be taken by patients with type 2 diabetes when performing traditional Chinese exercises. Objective: To understand whether the findings of previous systematic reviews and meta-analyses are still applicable and to try to address the deficiencies in the previous review, this review conducted a meta-analysis of existing randomized controlled trials to investigate the impact of traditional Chinese exercises on glycemic control with type 2 diabetes. Methods: The literature was searched in seven Chinese and English databases. Randomized controlled trials published in English and Chinese, from database inception to March 2023, were included in this review. Two reviewers independently reviewed the search results, extracted the data, and assessed the risk of bias. A meta-analysis of the included studies was conducted using Rev Man 5.4 and Stata 15.1 software. Heterogeneity was investigated using a sensitivity analysis, a subgroup analysis, and a meta-regression analysis. Pre-determined subgroups included the duration of the intervention, frequency of exercise, and duration of the single exercise session. Results: A total of 31 randomized controlled trials (2077 subjects) were selected in this review. The meta-analysis revealed that traditional Chinese exercises were more effective than control groups in lowering glycated hemoglobin (Z = 6.06; mean difference [MD] = − 0.64, 95% confidence interval [CI] − 0.85, − 0.44; P < 0.00001), fasting blood glucose (Z = 7.81; MD = − 0.82, 95% CI − 1.03, − 0.62; P < 0.00001), 2-h plasma glucose (Z = 5.61; MD = − 1.03, 95% CI − 1.39, − 0.67; P < 0.00001), total cholesterol (Z = 4.23; MD = − 0.37, 95% CI − 0.54, − 0.20; P < 0.0001), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (Z = 5.94; MD = 0.12, 95% CI 0.08, 0.16; P < 0.00001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (Z = 6.20; MD = − 0.34, 95% CI − 0.44, − 0.23; P < 0.00001), and triglyceride levels (Z = 3.74; MD = − 0.44, 95% CI − 0.67, − 0.21; P = 0.0002) among patients with type 2 diabetes. Conclusions: Traditional Chinese exercises can significantly improve blood glucose and lipid levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. When performing traditional Chinese exercise interventions for type 2 diabetes, it is recommended that exercise programs are designed for 30–50 min/session, 4–5 sessions/week for at least 3 months. Aim: The purpose of this study is to determine the lipid profile, mean blood glucose while fasting, impaired fasting glucose, and COPD patients with and without MetS. Materials & methods: After receiving permission from the Institutional Ethics Committee, the researchers started to work on their project. Patients diagnosed with MetS/COPD numbered a total of one hundred. We obtained information on the patient's whole medical history, including details about their occupation, income, smoking habits, diabetes, hypertension, and acute episodes. When determining body composition, height and mass were also taken into consideration. Every patient had a chest x-ray as well as an electrocardiogram. Result: The study indicated that fifty-five percent of patients had abdominal obesity, fifty-two percent had hypertension, fifty-two percent had impaired fasting glucose, forty-two percent had elevated triglycerides, and forty-eight percent had inadequate HDL cholesterol. We found hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia to be the most frequent factors, contrary to global research that found abdominal obesity to be the most common. Our department must enhance non-communicable disease screening to detect COPD patients with undiagnosed diabetes, dyslipidemia, or hypertension. Conclusion: Abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and low HDL cholesterol were more common in metabolic syndrome patients. Many differences existed between the groups. Patients with COPD who also have diabetes, impaired fasting glucose, dyslipidemia, or high blood pressure should begin adequate antihypertensive medicine, oral hypoglycemic drugs or insulin, and lipid-lowering therapy. Patients with COPD who only have one of these conditions should begin all four therapies. Diseases of the heart and blood vessels (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide, remaining an important concern for researchers, doctors, and patients alike. CVD encompasses a wide range of diseases that affect the heart, blood vessels, and blood. The study collected 80 blood serum samples, including 55 samples from patients with coronary artery disease and 25 healthy samples serving as a control group, collected from outpatient clinics in Samarra city from april 2023 to November 2023, with ages ranging from 25 to 55 years. The purpose was to evaluate the levels of chemerin, Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Total Cholesterol (TC), Low-density lipoprotein (LDL-c), High-density lipoprotein (HDL-c), and Triglycerides (TG) in the coronary artery disease group and the control group. The results showed a significant increase (P ≤0.05) in chemerin, TC, LDL-c, and TG levels in the patient group compared to the control group, as well as a significant decrease (P ≤0.05) in SOD and (HDL-c) levels in the patient group compared to the control group. The area under the curve for chemerin and other measurements showed excellent accuracy in diagnosing the disease, in addition to high sensitivity and specificity, indicating the precision of the measurements as a diagnostic marker for the disease. Obicetrapib is a selective inhibitor of cholesteryl ester transfer protein that is currently in phase 3 of development for the treatment of dyslipidemia as adjunct therapy. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively characterize the pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) disposition of obicetrapib. Data from 7 clinical trials conducted in healthy adults and those with varying degrees of dyslipidemia were included for model development. The structural model that best described obicetrapib PK was a 3‐compartment model with 4‐compartment transit absorption and first‐order elimination. Body weight was the only covariate found to significantly explain observed variability and was therefore included using allometric scaling on all disposition parameters. For a typical patient weighing 75 kg, the estimated apparent total body clearance and apparent volume of distribution of the central compartment was 0.81 L/h and 36.1 L, respectively. The final PK model parameters were estimated with good precision and were ultimately leveraged to sequentially inform 2 turnover models that describe obicetrapib's effect on low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C) and high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐C) concentrations. The maximum stimulatory effect of obicetrapib on LDL‐C loss was estimated to be 1.046, while the maximum inhibitory effect of obicetrapib on HDL‐C loss was 0.691. This corresponds to a predicted typical maximum percent change from baseline LDL‐C and HDL‐C of 51.1% and 224%, respectively. The final sequential model described obicetrapib PKPD well and was ultimately able to both demonstrate evidence of internal consistency and support decision‐making throughout the development lifecycle. Objective: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and insulin resistance (IR) are associated with diabetes. Insulin therapy in type 1 diabetes (T1DM) may complicate the diagnosis of both these conditions. Therefore, investigation of the diagnostic efficacy of MetS and IR components is important in paediatric population with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Methods: SCOPUS, Web of Science, and PubMed were searched for studies that have MetS and IR in paediatric populations with T1DM. We assessed the strength of association for MetS and IR components. A random effect model was used for the meta-analysis and the effect size was reported in terms of Hedge's g. Results: A total 30 studies were identified relevant to our systematic search. Insulin dosage and HbA1c, markers for glycemic condition showed very small effect on MetS with T1DM. In the lipid profile, triglyceride (TG) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) showed better effect size than high-density lipoprotein (HDL). In case of IR, heterogeneous nature of studies made it difficult to carry out a meta-analysis. A descriptive review of existing and novel markers is thus provided. Conclusion: In children with T1DM, lack of association between markers of glycemic condition suggested that MetS may develop independent of glycemic level. Other than TG and HDL, LDL may be used in the diagnosis of MetS. Diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disorder. It is associated with serious life-threatening complications if not properly managed. The current study aimed at investigating the possible protective role of propolis on streptozotocin-induced diabetic nephropathy. A diabetic rat model was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of 55 mg/kg streptozotocin. After 4 days, the diabetic rats received oral propolis (300 mg/kg/day) via gastric gavage for 28 days. Biochemical, histopathological and ultrastructural evaluations were performed. The results showed that: streptozotocin-induced diabetes was associated with a marked decrease in the serum high-density lipoproteins and antioxidant enzymes. However, a significant elevation in the levels of serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins was detected. Furthermore, streptozotocin treatment induced histopathological alterations of the renal cortex; in the form of distorted glomerular capillaries, widened Bowman's space and signs of epithelial tubular degeneration. Ultra-structurally, thickening and irregularity of the glomerular basement membrane and podocytes foot processes effacement were observed. The tubular epithelial cells showed swollen vacuolated mitochondria, scarce basal infoldings and loss of microvilli. Conversely, propolis partially restored the normal lipid profile, antioxidant biomarkers and renal cortical morphology. Background: Nowadays, metabolic syndrome has become a major health threat, and affects over one billion people globally. It also plays a great role in the growth of diseases like type 2 diabetes, coronary diseases, stroke, and other chronicity. It increases the risk of cardiovascular disorder and stroke by three to ten times and diabetic mellitus by ten times. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is increasing globally as a result of epidemiological shift. Low and middle-income countries are facing an increasing burden of metabolic syndrome. There is a need for concerted efforts to modify behavioral risk factors that significantly contribute to the prevalence of the syndrome. This can be done by developing and implementing appropriate interventions that can bring behavior change after testing for effectiveness, feasibility, and acceptability. Thus, this study aims to develop and test the effectiveness, feasibility and acceptability of an education intervention promoting healthy lifestyle to reduce risk factors for metabolic syndrome, among office workers in Ethiopia. Methods and analysis: This randomized controlled trial will be implemented with 226 bank employees (age ≥18 years) with metabolic syndrome from government and private banks in Bahir Dar City, Ethiopia. Participants will be randomized to intervention (education) and control (general health advice) groups. The intervention group will be given one-on -one base education about healthy diets, physical exercise, stress management, avoidance of harmful alcohol consumption and smoking cessation by experts on health promotion. Text messages will be sent every two weeks and reading materials will also be provided. Additionally, a review meeting will be held at the 3rd and 6th month of the intervention. The primary outcomes of interest will be change in metabolic parameters (obesity levels, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein, and triglycerides). Secondary outcomes will be knowledge, attitudes and practice of the participants towards lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors, feasibility, acceptability, implementation fidelity, and cost-effectiveness of the intervention. Data will be collected at three time points: at baseline, at the 6th month of the intervention and at the end of the intervention (9 months). Generalized linear mixed models will be utilized to compare the desired outcome between the trial arms, after accounting for baseline variations. Cost-benefit analysis and a qualitative process evaluation of the intervention will also be conducted. Discussion: This randomized control trial study will provide information on the effectiveness, feasibility, and acceptability of an education intervention promoting healthy lifestyle to reduce risk factors for metabolic syndrome, among office workers in Ethiopia, where the burden of metabolic syndrome is high among office workers. Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder among women. Dyslipidemia is a prevalent metabolic abnormality in individuals with PCOS. Moreover, vitamin D deficiency is widespread across all societal strata, with a particularly heightened prevalence observed in patients afflicted with PCOS. The present study aimed to investigate the level of vitamin D and its correlation with lipid profiles in Iranian women diagnosed with PCOS. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out at the PCOS and infertility clinic of Arash Women's Hospital in Tehran. The study encompassed the medical records of PCOS patients who attended the clinic from March 2021 to December 2023. All patients underwent blood tests, which included assessments of fasting blood sugar levels, lipid profiles, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels. The investigation focused on evaluating the relationship between vitamin D levels and lipid profiles. Statistical analyses, including the chi-square test and Spearman's correlation coefficient, were employed to analyze the data. Results: A total of 1004 women diagnosed with PCOS were included in the study. The age range of the participants was 14 to 46 years. The majority of the participants had a body mass index (BMI) within the normal range (n = 555, 55.3%). The median vitamin D level among the participants was 26.00 (IQR: 19.00–34.00). The relationship between vitamin D levels and lipid profile parameters was assessed, revealing no significant correlation between vitamin D levels and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (r = 0.021, p = 0.505), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (r = 0.011, p = 0.719), or triglyceride (TG) (r = -0.026, p = 0.417) levels, both in non-adjusted and age-adjusted analyses. Conclusion: According to the present study, there was no significant correlation between serum 25(OH)D deficiency and elevated TG or LDL levels or decreased HDL levels in PCOS patients. Nevertheless, further prospective studies are needed to determine whether there is a causal relationship between vitamin D deficiency and lipid profile alterations, specifically among PCOS patients. Background: Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is characterized by a systemic inflammatory response, predominantly associated with hepatitis B virus in the Asia-Pacific region, with a high short-term mortality rate. The platelet to high-density lipoprotein ratio (PHR) has been used to predict the prognosis of patients with various inflammatory diseases. We aim to is to use the PHR to predict the short-term prognosis of patients with HBV-ACLF. Method: In this study, we retrospectively analyzed clinical data from 270 HBV-ACLF patients. Using logistic regression, we identified independent risk factors for short-term mortality and developed a prognostic model. This model was then validated, compared, and its clinical utility assessed via decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: Among the 270 HBV-ACLF patients, 98 patients died within 28 days. The deceased group exhibited a higher proportion of severe hepatic encephalopathy and ascites. Additionally, there was a statistically significant difference (P = 0.046) in the novel inflammation scoring system, PHR, between the two groups. Following stringent variable selection, PHR was identified as a predictive factor for short-term mortality in HBV-ACLF patients using logistic regression analysis (OR: 0.835 (0.756–0.999), P = 0.009), and it exhibited a synergistic effect with certain traditional scores. The prognostic model constructed based on PHR demonstrated a superior ability to predict short-term mortality compared to traditional scores such as Child-Turcotte-Pugh (AUC: 0.889). Evaluation using calibration curves and decision curve analysis (DCA) suggested its practical utility. Despite recent findings indicating a paradoxical association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, the impact of HDL-C on subsequent outcomes after ischemic stroke remains unclear. The study aims to investigate the relationships between HDL-C levels and post-stroke functional outcomes while examining the potential modifying influence of HDL-C-related single nucleotide polymorphisms identified through genome-wide association studies. This cohort study included 1,310 patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), all of whom had their admission serum lipid profile and genotyping information. Participants were categorized into four groups based on gender and HDL-C level. Prognostic outcomes were assessed using a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at 1, 3, and 12 months post-admission. Multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline regression analysis were used to assess the associations between HDL-C levels and outcomes. The mean age of patients was 61.17 ± 12.08 years, and 69.31% were men. After adjusting confounders, patients with the highest HDL-C level group had a significantly higher risk of poor functional outcomes at 1, 3, and 12 months following stroke compared to the reference group. Restricted cubic splines depicted a nonlinear association between HDL-C levels and poor prognosis in both men and women. The ABCA1 gene rs2575876 AA genotype combined with abnormal HDL-C levels exhibited a significantly heightened risk of post-stroke adverse outcomes at 1 and 3 months compared to patients with normal HDL-C levels and GG + GA genotype. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted meticulously, utilized data from a robust and comprehensive source, DATADRYAD, in the Sierra Leone database, collected between October 2019 and October 2021, including LVH and various variables. All variables were described and screened using univariate analysis, Spearman correlation, and principal component analysis (PCA). The lipid profile, including total cholesterols (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), non-high-density lipoprotein (Non-HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), TC/HDL-C ratio, TG/HDL-C ratio, Non-HDL-C /HDL-C ratio and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, which quartiles were treated as categorical variables, with the lowest quartile serving as the reference category. Three adjusted models were constructed to mitigate the influence of other variables. To ensure the robustness of the model, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to calculate the cutoff values by analyzing the ROC curves. A sensitivity analysis was performed to validate the findings further. Results: The dataset encompasses information from 2092 individuals. Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine and metabolic disturbance that affects many women worldwide and is characterized by chronic anovulation, hyperandrogenism, and ovarian dysfunction. Placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells (PDMSCs) are derived from the placenta and have advantages over other sources of MSCs in terms of availability, safety, and immunomodulation. Materials and methods: In this experimental study, twenty female Wistar rats were assigned to four groups (n = 5) including control, sham, PCOS, and PCOS+PDMSCs groups. Then, PCOS was induced in the rats through administering letrozole for 21 days. PDMSCs (1 × 106 cells) were injected through the tail vein. Fourteen days after the cell infusion, evaluation was performed on the number of healthy follicles, corpus luteum, and cystic follicles as well as the levels of testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, and insulin resistance. Moreover, the serum levels of cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) were measured. Liver function was also determined by the evaluation of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels. Results: The number of corpus luteum and primordial, primary, secondary, and antral follicles was significantly elevated in the PCOS+PDMSCs group compared to the PCOS group. However, the number of cystic follicles significantly decreased in the PCOS+PDMSCs group. The LH and testosterone levels also decreased significantly, while FSH levels increased significantly in the PCOS+PDMSCs group. The levels of fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, and insulin resistance notably decreased in the PCOS+PDMSCs group. Moreover, the lipid profile improved in the PCOS+PDMSCs group along with a significant decrease of cholesterol, LDL, and TG and an increase in HDL. The PCOS+PDMSCs group exhibited marked decreases in the AST and ALT levels as well. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that PDMSCs are a potential treatment option for PCOS because they can effectively restore folliculogenesis and correct hormonal imbalances, lipid profiles and liver dysfunction in a rat model of PCOS. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is subdivided depending on eye pressure. Patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) have never had high intraocular pressure (IOP) measured while patients with ocular hypertension (OHT) have high eye pressure but no signs of glaucoma. Although IOP is considered to be a risk factor for all glaucoma patients, it is reasonable to assume that other risk factors such as inflammation play a role. We aimed to characterize the proteome and cytokine profile during hypoxia in plasma from patients with NTG (n = 10), OHT (n = 10), and controls (n = 10). Participants were exposed to hypoxia for two hours, followed by 30 min of normoxia. Samples were taken before ("baseline"), during ("hypoxia"), and after hypoxia ("recovery"). Proteomics based on liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC–MS) was performed. Cytokines were measured by Luminex assays. Bioinformatic analyses indicated the involvement of complement and coagulation cascades in NTG and OHT. Regulation of high-density lipoprotein 3 (HDL3) apolipoproteins suggested that changes in cholesterol metabolism are related to OHT. Hypoxia decreased the level of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in OHT patients compared to controls. Circulating levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were decreased in NTG patients compared to controls during hypoxia. After recovery, plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) was upregulated in patients with NTG and OHT. Current results indicate an enhanced systemic immune response in patients with NTG and OHT, which correlates with pathogenic events in glaucoma. Background: Compost-bedded pack barns (CBP) are getting huge attention as an alternative housing system for dairy cows due to their beneficial impact on animal welfare. Effective microorganisms (EM) inoculums are believed to enhance compost quality, improve soil structure and benefit the environment. However, little information is available on the impact of incubation with external EM combinations on the barn environment, compost quality and microbial diversity in CBP. This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of inoculating different combinations of EM [Lactobacillus plantarum (L), Compound Bacillus (B) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S)] on compost quality and microbial communities of CBP products, as well as the relationship with the heifers' barn environment. CBP barns were subjected to the following four treatments: CON with no EM inoculum, LB/LS/LBS were Incubated with weight ratios of 1:2 (L: B), 1:2 (L: S), 1:1:1 (L: B: S), respectively. Results: The EM inoculation (LB, LS, LBS) reduced the concentration of respirable particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) in the CBP, and decreased the serum total protein and total cholesterol levels in heifers. Notably, LBS achieved the highest content of high-density lipoprotein compared to other treatments. Microbiome results revealed that EM inoculation reduced the bacterial abundance (Chao1 index) and fungal diversity (Shannon & Simpson indexes), while increasing the relative abundance of various bacterial genera (Pseudomonas, Paracoccus, Aequorivita) and fungi (Pestalotiopsis), which are associated with cellulose decomposition that ultimately resulted in accelerating organic matter degradation and humification. Furthermore, high nutrient elements (TK&TP) and low mycotoxin content were obtained with EM inoculation, with LBS showing a particularly pronounced effect. Meanwhile, LBS contributed to a decline in the proportion of fungal pathogen categories but also led to an increase in fungal saprotroph categories. To study the laser acupuncture (LA) effects on postmenopausal obese women's metabolic syndrome. Randomized controlled trial. Benha university hospital. Thirty postmenopausal women were randomized into two equal groups. Group A received a diet regimen and Group B received LA treatment for 30 min three times a week for two months beside the diet regimen. Included weight (W), body mass index (BMI), waist (WC), hip (HC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), serum level of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), fasting blood glucose (FBG), fasting blood insulin (FBI), homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) before and after the end of treatment. The study's findings showed that both groups experienced a highly statistically significant decrease in the post-testing mean value of W, BMI, WC, HC, WHR, SBP, DBP, TC, TG, LDL, FBG, FBI, and HOMA-IR, while both groups experienced a significant increase in the post-treatment mean value of HDL (p 0.0001). The posttreatment SBP, DBP, TC, TG, LDL, FBS, FBI and insulin resistance were significantly lower while HDL was significantly higher in women who received combined LA and diet regimen compared to those who received dietary regimen only. Raising plasma total cholesterol (CHOL) via apolipoprotein E (ApoE) knockout (KO) drastically exacerbates muscle wasting in Dysf mice. However, dysferlinopathic patients have abnormally reduced plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. The current study aimed to determine whether HDL-C lowering can exacerbate the mild phenotype of dysferlin-null mice. Methods: Human cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), a plasma lipid transfer protein not found in mice that reduces HDL-C, and/or its optimal adapter protein human apolipoprotein B (ApoB), were overexpressed in Dysf mice. Mice received a 2% cholesterol diet from 2 months of age and characterized through ambulatory and hanging functional tests, plasma analyses, and muscle histology. Results: CETP/ApoB expression in Dysf mice caused reduced HDL-C (54.5%) and elevated ratio of CHOL/HDL-C (181.3%) compared to control Dysf mice in plasma, but without raising CHOL. Compared to the severe muscle pathology found in high CHOL Dysf/ApoE double knockout mice, Dysf/CETP/ApoB mice did not show significant changes in ambulation, hanging capacity, increases in damaged area, collagen deposition, or decreases in cross-sectional area and healthy myofibre coverage. Conclusions: CETP/ApoB over-expression in Dysf mice decreases HDL-C without increasing CHOL or exacerbating muscle pathology. Background and purpose: Garlic is used as an important medicinal food for treatment of many diseases, however, the association between garlic consumption and dyslipidemia have yielded inconsistent results. So we carried this meta-analysis to explore the blood lipid-lowering effects of garlic. Methods: Databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of science, Embase, Cochrane Library were systematically searched until June 2024. Heterogeneity among studies was examined using Q and I2 statistics. Also subgroup analysis were conducted to explore the potential heterogeneity. Combined weighted mean differences (WMD) with their 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using a random-effects model. The GRADE approach was used to evaluate the overall certainty of the evidence in the meta-analyses. Results: A total of 21 RCTs studies involved association between garlic consumption and blood lipids level of dyslipidemia patients were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled results showed that garlic consumption significantly reduced total cholesterol (TC)(WMD = -0.64mmol/L, 95%CI = -0.75 −-0.54, P < 0.001), triglyceride (TG)(WMD = -0.17mmol/L, 95%CI = -0.26 −-0.09, P < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein(LDL-C)(WMD = -0.44mmol/L, 95%CI = -0.57 −-0.31, P < 0.001) while slightly increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C)(WMD = 0.04mmol/L, 95%CI = -0.00 − 0.08, P < 0.001). And subgroup analyses showed that TC, TG and LDL-C significantly decreased in patients aged > 50 years compared to those aged ≤ 50 years. And garlic oil greatly reduced TC and LDL-C compared with garlic power. Finally, sensitivity analysis and publication bias showed that the results were reliable. Conclusions: Evidence from this meta-analysis suggested that garlic consumption could be effective in reducing the risk of dyslipidemia and preventing CVDs. Introduction– Liver cirrhosis is a condition characterised by widespread disruption of the liver's anatomical structure and function. Lipid metabolism mostly takes place in the hepatocytes. In cases of liver cirrhosis, it is common to observe aberrant lipid profiles and impaired hepatocyte activity. The aim of present study is to determine serum lipid profile in patients with cirrhosis and its correlation with Child Turcotte Pugh score Material and methods- The present hospital based cross sectional study was conducted at department of medicine of a tertiary care centre among 100 patients diagnosed with cirrhosis during the study period of one year. Clinical history was taken and laboratory profile was done. Results were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0. Results– The mean age of patients was 49.7±12.4 years. The average values of lipid profile markers were calculated as follows Total cholesterol (mg/dl) (96.7±36.4), Triglycerides (mg/dl) (87.4±41.8), High density lipoprotein (mg/dl)(54.4±26.6) and Low density lipoprotein (mg/dl) (26.3±12.7). The mean CTP score of all the patients was 9.7±1.7. Out of all the patients 3 were in class A, 45 were in class B and 52 were in class C. Negative correlation was found between CTP and lipid profile (p<0.01). The present study outlines the many risk variables of myocardial infarction (MI) in the patient population. Blood lipid profiles were normolipidemic in the study’s subjects. Myocardial infarction patients and controls were compared concerning their lipid, lipoprotein, and apolipoprotein profiles. Materials & methods: In this study, 84 participants had their blood cholesterol, Apolipoprotein-A, LDL, VLDL, HDL, triacylglycerols, and malondialdehyde studied. Out of the total number of participants, 42 were individuals who had suffered a myocardial infarction (MI). In contrast, the other 42 were controls matched for age and sex. Results: Acute myocardial infarction (MI) patients had significantly elevated levels of total cholesterol and triacylglycerols (TAGs) (p <0.05) despite the presence of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in their blood. A significant difference was seen between the levels of apolipoprotein-A and low-density lipoprotein in the MI group and those in the control group. Researchers found that those who had a rapid heart attack exhibited significantly higher levels of malondialdehyde (p<0.05). Conclusion: For individuals diagnosed with risk factors, lipid profile monitoring, dietary antioxidant consumption, and measurement of inflammatory markers can all help lower the risk of myocardial infarction (MI). Aim: To assess and verify the effect of the gut microbiome on the susceptibility and complications of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Materials and Methods: To achieve this aim, a two‐sample and reverse Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted. In addition, an external validation study was performed using individual microbiome data of patients with T1D from the gutMEGA datasets and the National Clinical Research Center for Metabolic Diseases. The circulating metabolites facilitated two‐sample MR analysis, mediation and multivariable MR analysis to evaluate the direct relationship between the gut microbiome and T1D complications. Results: The MR analysis results from the discovery and validation phases confirmed that Veillonellaceae can potentially reduce the susceptibility of T1D. In the gutMEGA dataset, the average relative abundance of Veillonellaceae in patients with T1D was 0.66%, compared with 1.09% in the controls. Furthermore, the external validation, which included 60 patients with T1D and 30 matched healthy controls, found that the median relative abundance of Veillonellaceae was also lower than controls at 1.10% (95% CI 0.50%‐1.80%). Specifically, the Eubacterium coprostanoligenes group, known for its ability to regulate cholesterol, was significantly associated with a lower risk of developing renal, neurological and ophthalmic complications in T1D. Moreover, high cholesterol in small high‐density lipoprotein and cholesteryl esters in high‐density lipoprotein were associated with a reduced risk of T1D renal and ophthalmic complications. The mediation and multivariable MR analysis combining cholesterol indicated that the E. coprostanoligenes group is the most dominant factor influencing T1D complications. Childhood maltreatment influences adult physical health through cascading effects over the life course and it is critical to identify intervening processes. Marital quality has significant implications for adult physical health via cognitive, emotional, and behavioral pathways and may be a viable pathway. Given that cardiometabolic biomarkers are associated with the leading causes of death in the United States, the current study longitudinally investigated marital quality, health locus of control, and eating habits in a serial mediation model linking childhood maltreatment to high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). Using a sample of 352 adults from the study of Midlife Development in the United States, we used three waves of data to test our hypotheses. Results of structural equation models indicate that although all the hypothesized direct effects were statistically significant, the serial indirect effects were non-significant. Childhood maltreatment was associated with a lower quality marriage, marital quality was associated with higher levels of health locus of control which, in turn, was associated with healthier eating habits. Finally, healthier eating habits were associated with greater HDL, but not lower LDL. Additionally, marital quality exerted a direct effect on LDL and mediated the relationship between maltreatment and LDL, but not HDL. For researchers, marital quality appears to be a mechanism linking childhood maltreatment to cardiometabolic biomarkers, yet health locus of control and eating habits do not appear to have strong effects. Context Cottonseed oil (CSO) is higher in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and saturated fatty acids (SFAs) than many liquid plant oils. Objectives To conduct a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining effects of CSO on markers of lipid metabolism and evaluate lipid and lipoprotein effects of incorporating CSO into a healthy dietary pattern using regression equations. Data Sources A systematic search was conducted for RCTs comparing CSO with a non-CSO comparator in any population. Data Analyses The Katan regression equation was used to predict lipid/lipoprotein changes when incorporating CSO into a US-style healthy eating pattern at 25 to 100% of the total oil allowance (ie, 27 g/2000 kcal) compared with average American intake (NHANES 2017 to 2020 pre-COVID pandemic). Results In total, 3 eligible publications (n = 2 trials), with 58 participants that provided 44% and 30% of total energy as CSO, were included. Fasting low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C; ≈ –7.7 mg/dL) and triglycerides (≈ –7.5 mg/dL) were lower after 5 days of a CSO-enriched diet vs olive oil (OO). In a 56-day trial, CSO lowered total cholesterol (TC; ≈ –14.8 mg/dL), LDL-C (≈ –14.0 mg/dL), and non–high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (≈ –14.2 mg/dL) vs OO. Postprandially, angiopoietin-like protein-3, -4, and -8 concentrations decreased with CSO and increased with OO intake. Compared with average American intake, a healthy eating pattern with 27 g of CSO was estimated to lower TC (–8.1 mg/dL) and LDL-C (–7.3 mg/dL) levels, with minimal reduction in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (–1.1 mg/dL). Compared with the healthy eating pattern, incorporating 27 g of CSO was predicted to increase TC and LDL-C levels by 2.4 mg/dL. Conclusion Limited high-quality research suggests CSO may improve lipid/lipoprotein levels compared with OO. Emerging scientific studies have supported the hypothesis that exposure to environmental chemicals increases the incidence of diverse human metabolic disorders. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association between fluoride exposure and metabolic syndrome (MetS) prevalence in people from the Central Region of Mexico. This research included 575 adult individuals. Urinary fluoride concentrations were determined using a potentiometric method. Anthropometric measurements and blood pressure were also acquired. Serum fasting glucose and lipid levels were quantified. For the MetS screening, we used the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) criteria. The mean urinary fluoride levels were 3.50 ± 2.50 mg/L. The prevalence of MetS was approximately 27 and 25% according to NCEP ATP III and IDF criteria, respectively. A multivariate logistic regression analysis showed significant associations (p < 0.05) between urinary fluoride concentrations and MetS occurrence using NCEP ATP III criteria (OR = 1.60; 95% CI 1.05–2.10) and IDF criteria (OR = 1.35; 95% CI 0.95–1.45). The disease severity of psoriasis is mainly assessed subjectively via psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) and body surface area (BSA), while an optimal measure of cutaneous response, may overlook systemic inflammation in psoriasis patients. The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), monocyte to high density lipoprotein ratio (MHR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) exhibit notable associations with the inflammation severity in multiple diseases. The aim of this retrospective study was to explore the associations between inflammatory parameters and the skin lesions' severity of psoriasis. After analysis, we found that patients with psoriasis had higher NLR, MLR, PLR, MHR, and SII levels compared to the control group. At baseline, the parameters of NLR (r = 0.124, P = 0.003), MLR (r = 0.153, P < 0.001), MHR (r = 0.217, P < 0.001) and SII (r = 0.141, P = 0.001) had a positive correlation with PASI in psoriasis patients. At the same time, we analyzed the patients who received different systemic therapy. We observed a significant decrease in NLR, PLR, MLR, and SII in psoriasis patients after treatment. Notably, TNF-α inhibitors and IL-17A inhibitors subgroups showed a more significant reduction than IL-23/IL-12/23 inhibitors and MTX medication. Additionally, we found the change of NLR (r = 0.194, P < 0.001), PLR (r = 0.104, P = 0.014), MLR (r = 0.191, P < 0.001), MHR (r = 0.106, P = 0.012), and SII (r = 0.228, P < 0.001) had a positive correlation with the change of PASI in psoriasis patients. Background: New evidence links elevated blood aldosterone levels to endothelial dysfunction which causes insulin resistance and kidney damage in diabetics. In this study, we aimed to measure serum aldosterone levels and assess the severity of renal injury in different stages of diabetic nephropathy. Methods: The 52 participants in this case-control study were classified according to albuminuria and ACR, and they all had type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM): Group (A): 13 healthy individuals as control, Group (B): 13 controlled patients with T2DM with normoalbuminuria and normal albumin/create ratio =30mg/gm, Group (C): 13 patients with T2DM with microalbuminuria and albumin/create ratio 30-300mg/g, and Group (D): 13 patients with T2DM with macroalbuminuria and albumin/create ratio =300mg/g. Serum aldosterone and serum renin were assessed. Results: Serum aldosterone and renin differed significantly between the four groups (p<0.001). In the microalbuminuria diabetic group, a statistically significant strong negative correlation was found between s. aldosterone and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (p= 0.025), and a statistically significant strong positive correlation was found between s. aldosterone and Alb/Cr ratio & s. renin (p=.0.037, 0.007 respectively). In the macroalbuminuria diabetic group, a statistically significant strong negative correlation was found between s. aldosterone and all of the Alb/Cr ratios, as well as total leucocytic count (TLC) (p=0.009, 0.029 respectively), and a statistically significant strong positive correlation was found between s. aldosterone, HDL, and K (p=0.042, 0.013, respectively). Post hoc analysis of S. Aldosterone showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the four studied groups (P<0.001), and as regards S. renin there was a statistically significant difference between Group A vs Group D (p= P3,0.015), Group B vs Group D (p=0.001), and Group C vs Group D (p<00.001). Background: Children who have chronic kidney disease (CKD) or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) often present with a range of concurrent medical conditions, one of which is dyslipidemia. This work aimed to detect the frequency of dyslipidemia among children with ESRD at Zagazig university hospitals. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study included (61 children patients) aged from 4 to 17 years old, who had ESRD (CKD grade V) with estimated glomerular filtration rate less than 15 ml/min/1.73m2 by modified Schwartz equation and on regular hemodialysis. A comprehensive history taking, thorough physical examination, and laboratory tests, including regular labs and the lipid profile, were conducted for all patients. Results: High percentage of examined children had high lipid profile (29.5 %) of the populations, The prevalence of abnormally high levels of total serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density were found to be 29.5%, 75.4% and 16.4% respectively. Triglycerides, VLDL-C, and HDL levels were found to be higher during maintenance hemodialysis. No significant correlation was found between duration of hemodialysis, urea, and creatinine, with Cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein, and very low-density lipoprotein, except for a significant positive correlation between phosphate (Po4) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) (P =0.022). Conclusion: The prevalence of dyslipidemia was found to be high among HD patients in Zagazig university hospitals. Background: The interaction between CD47 and signal-regulatory protein-alpha (SIRPα) inhibits phagocytosis, and their clinicopathological characteristics have been evaluated in various diseases. However, the significance of CD47 and SIRPα expression, as well as the combined effect, in Extranodal Natural killer/T-cell Lymphoma (ENKTL) remains uncertain. Methods: In total, 76 newly diagnosed ENKTL patients (mean age 49.9 years, 73.7% male) were included in this study. CD47 and SIRPα expression were examined by immunohistochemistry. Survival analyses were conducted through Kaplan-Meier curves and the Cox regression model. Results: Seventy-one (93.4%) cases were categorized as the CD47 positive group and 59 (77.6%) cases were categorized as the SIRPα positive group. CD47-negative cases had more advanced-stage illness (P = 0.001), while SIRPα-positive cases showed significantly lower levels of high-density lipoprotein (P < 0.001). In univariable analysis, CD47, SIRPα expression, and their combination were significantly associated with prognosis (P < 0.05). In multivariable analysis, only positive SIRPα expression remained significantly associated with superior overall survival (Hazard ratio [HR] 0.446; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.207–0.963; P = 0.004). Furthermore, SIRPα expression could re-stratify the survival of patients in ECOG (< 2), advanced CA stage, PINK (HR), CD38-positive, PD1-positive, and CD30-positive groups. Conclusions: SIRPα status was a potential independent prognostic factor for ENKTL. Aims: Telemedicine has been promoted as an effective way of managing type‐2 diabetes (T2DM) in primary care. However, the effectiveness of telemedicine is unclear. We investigated the clinical and cost‐effectiveness of different telemedicine interventions for people with T2DM, compared to usual care. Methods: We searched Medline, Embase, Cochrane, CINHAL, ProQuest and EconLit for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that examined the effectiveness of telemedicine interventions on clinical outcomes (HbA1c, body mass index [BMI], weight, diastolic blood pressure [DBP], systolic blood pressure [SBP], fasting blood glucose, high‐density lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol, low‐density lipoprotein [LDL] cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglyceride) in adults with T2DM, published in English from inception until 31 December 2022. Meta‐analyses were conducted using random‐effects models pooling mean differences, heterogeneity was quantified using the I2 statistic. Publication bias was assessed using funnel plots, Egger tests and trim and fill. Subgroup analyses included type of telemedicine intervention, telemedicine mode of delivery and type of healthcare professionals. This study was registered with PROSPERO, CRD 42022375128. Results: Of the 4093 records identified, 21 RCTs, 10,732 participants from seven regions, were included. Reported interventions included telephone (k = 16 studies), internet‐based (k = 2), videoconference (k = 2) and telephone and emails (k = 1). We observed no statistically significant differences between synchronous or asynchronous telemedicine interventions compared to usual care for HbA1c (−0.08% (−0.88 mmol/mol); 95% CI: −0.18, 0.02), BMI (0.51 kg/m2; 95% CI: −0.21, 1.22), SBP (−1.48 mmHg; 95% CI: −3.22, 0.26), DBP (3.23 mmHg; 95% CI: −0.89, 7.34), HDL‐cholesterol (0.01 mmol/L; 95% CI: −0.03, 0.05), LDL‐cholesterol (0.08 mmol/L; 95% CI: −0.22, 0.37), triglycerides (−0.08 mmol/L, 95% CI: −0.31, −0.15), total cholesterol (−0.10 mmol/L; 95% CI: −0.25, 0.04) and weight (−0.50 kg; 95% CI: −1.21, 0.21). Conclusions: Telemedicine was as effective as usual care in improving health outcomes of people with T2DM. They can provide a safe solution in times of rising demands for primary healthcare services, or in extreme events, like a global pandemic. Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the impact of VLCKD on cardiovascular risk factors in patients with T2DM. Methods: Until March 2024, extensive searches were conducted on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and other relevant databases. The purpose was to identify clinical trials examining the impact of VLCKD on glycemic control, lipid profile, and blood pressure. The GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) method was used to assess the evidence's degree of certainty. Results: Our initial search found a total of 2568 records and finally 29 trials were included in final analysis. Our results showed that adherence from VLCKD led to significant reduction in fasting blood sugar (WMD= -11.68 mg/dl; 95% CI: -18.79, -4.56; P = 0.001), HbA1c (WMD= -0.29; 95% CI: -0.44, -0.14; P < 0.001), HOMA-IR(WMD= -0.71; 95% CI: -1.14, -0.29; P = 0.001), insulin (WMD= -1.45; 95% CI: -2.54, -0.36; P = 0.009), triglyceride (WMD= -17.95; 95% CI: -26.82, -9.07; P < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (WMD= -2.85, 95% CI: -4.99, -0.71; P = 0.009) and diastolic blood pressure (WMD= -1.40; 95% CI: -2.66, -0.13; P = 0.03). We also found a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level after adherence from VLCKD diet (WMD = 3.93, 95% CI: 2.03, 5.84; P = 0.000). We couldn't find any significant differences between groups in term of LDL and total cholesterol levels. Objective: Weight regain after weight loss is a challenge in obesity management. The metabolic changes and underlying mechanisms in obese people with weight fluctuation remain to be elucidated. In the present study, we aimed to profile the features and clinical significance of liver transcriptome in obese mice with weight regain after weight loss. Methods: The male C57BL/6J mice were fed with standard chow diet or high-fat diet (HFD). After 9 weeks, the HFD-induced obese mice were randomly divided into weight gain (WG), weight loss (WL) and weight regain (WR) group. After 10 weeks of dietary intervention, body weight, fasting blood glucose (FBG), intraperitoneal glucose tolerance, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (T-CHO) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were measured. Morphological structure and lipid droplet accumulation in the liver were observed by H&E staining and oil red O staining, respectively. The liver transcriptome was detected by RNA sequencing. Protein expressions of liver cytochrome P450 3a11 (Cyp3a11) and E4 promoter-binding protein 4 (E4bp4) were determined by Western blot. Results: After 10 weeks of dietary intervention, the body weight, FBG, glucose area under the curve, T-CHO and LDL-C in WL group were significantly lower than those in WG group (P < 0.05). At 4 weeks of HFD re-feeding, the mice in WR group presented body weight and T-CHO significantly lower than those in WG group, whereas higher than those in WL group (P < 0.05). Hepatic vacuolar degeneration and lipid droplet accumulation in the liver were significantly alleviated in WL group and WR group, compared to those in WG group. The liver transcriptome associated with lipid metabolism was significantly altered during weight fluctuation in obese mice. Compared with those in WG group, Cyp3a11 in the liver was significantly upregulated, and E4bp4 was significantly downregulated in WL and WR groups. Conclusion: Obese mice experience weight regain after weight loss by HFD re-feeding, but their glucose and lipid metabolism disorders are milder than those induced by the persistence of obesity. Downregulated E4bp4 and upregulated Cyp3a11 are detected in obese mice after weight loss, suggesting that the E4bp4-Cyp3a11 axis may involved in metabolic mechanisms underlying weight regulation. The association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is controversial. HDL-C is one content type of high-density lipoprotein (HDL). HDL consists of diverse proteins and lipids and can be classified into different subclasses based on size, shape, charge, and density, and can change dynamically in disease states. Therefore, HDL-C levels alone cannot represent HDLs' cardioprotective role. In this review, we summarized the methods for separating HDL subclasses, the studies on the association between HDL subclasses and cardiovascular risk (CVR), and the impact of lipid-modifying medications and nonpharmacological approaches (exercise training, dietary omega fatty acids, and low-density lipoprotein apheresis) on HDL subclasses. As HDL is a natural nanoplatform, recombinant HDLs (rHDLs) have been used as a delivery system in vivo by loading small interfering RNA, drugs, contrast agents, etc. Therefore, we further reviewed the HDL subclasses used in rHDLs and their advantages and disadvantages. Background: The high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to apolipoprotein A-I index (HDL-C/ApoA-I) may be practical and useful in clinical practice as a marker of atherosclerosis. This study aimed to investigate the association between the HDL-C/ApoA-I index with cardiometabolic risk factors and subclinical atherosclerosis. Methods: In this cross-sectional sub-analysis of the GEA study, 1,363 individuals, women (51.3%) and men (48.7%) between 20 and 75 years old, without coronary heart disease or diabetes mellitus were included. We defined an adverse cardiometabolic profile as excess adipose tissue metrics, non-alcoholic liver fat measured by non-contrasted tomography, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemias, and insulin resistance. The population was stratified by quartiles of the HDL-C/Apo-AI index, and its dose-relationship associations were analysed using Tobit regression, binomial, and multinomial logistic regression analysis. Results: Body mass index, visceral and pericardial fat, metabolic syndrome, fatty liver, high blood pressure, and CAC were inversely associated with the HDL-C/ApoA-I index. The CAC > 0 prevalence was higher in quartile 1 (29.2%) than in the last quartile (22%) of HDL-C/ApoA-I index (p = 0.035). The probability of having CAC > 0 was higher when the HDL-C/ApoA-I index was less than 0.28 (p < 0.001). This association was independent of classical coronary risk factors, visceral and pericardial fat measurements. Conclusion: The HDL-C/ApoA-I index is inversely associated with an adverse cardiometabolic profile and CAC score, making it a potentially useful and practical biomarker of coronary atherosclerosis. Overall, these findings suggest that the HDL-C/ApoA-I index could be useful for evaluating the probability of having higher cardiometabolic risk factors and subclinical atherosclerosis in adults without CAD. Objectives Methods Results Conclusion Experimental and small human studies have indicated that high total adiponectin levels have beneficial cardiometabolic effects. In contrast, however, high total adiponectin levels are also associated with higher all‐cause and cardiovascular mortality in thoroughly adjusted epidemiological studies. To gain further insight into these seemingly contradictory results, we report results on total adiponectin from the indigenous Melanesian population of Kitava, Trobriand Islands, Papua New Guinea, where an apparent absence of cardiometabolic disease has been previously reported.Fasting levels of serum total adiponectin were measured cross‐sectionally in ≥40‐year‐old Kitavans (n = 102) and Swedish controls matched for age and sex (n = 108). Multivariable linear regression was used for the analysis of associations with total adiponectin when controlled for group, sex, smoking, hypertension and/or type 2 diabetes, age, and body mass index.Total adiponectin was lower for Kitavans compared to Swedish controls (Median [Mdn] 4.6 μg/mL, range 1.0–206 μg/mL and Mdn 9.7 μg/mL, range 3.1–104 μg/mL, respectively, r = .64, p < .001). Lipid nanoparticles often contain a phosphatidylcholine with a long chain fatty acid, 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DSPC). However, their preparation often encounters difficulties such as the inability to yield <20 nm nanoparticles due to the aggregation-prone behavior of DSPC. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are ∼10 nm protein-bound lipid nanoparticles in our body, and microfluidic preparations of HDL-mimicking nanoparticles (μHDL) have been reported. Herein, we report a new microfluidic mixing mode that enables preparation of μHDL with DSPC in high yield (≥90% on a protein basis). The critical mechanism of this mode is a spontaneous asymmetric distribution of the ethanol flow injected in a symmetric manner followed by turbulent mixing in a simple rectangular parallelepiped-shaped chip. BACKGROUND: Oxidative modification of high-density lipoprotein occurs in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome. However, the relationship between oxidized high-density lipoprotein and ovulation dysfunction and its mechanism are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect and potential mechanism of oxidized high-density lipoprotein on ovarian granulosa cell apoptosis. METHODS: Polycystic ovary syndrome rat model was established, then the high-density lipoprotein was harvested from the rat serum of heart blood. The degree of oxidation of the high-density lipoprotein was detected by high-density lipoprotein inflammation index assay, malondialdehyde assay and lipoprotein agarose gel electrophoresis assay. The normal rat ovarian granulosa cells were isolated and treated with high-density lipoprotein and oxidized high-density lipoprotein isolated from the model rat serum. Cell viability was detected by CCK-8 assay. Cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. The generation of reactive oxygen species was detected by H2DCF-DA staining. The p38 signaling activity was detected by western blot assay. Ovarian granulosa cells were pretreated with reactive oxygen species inhibitors N-acetylcysteine, tetramethylpiperidine (Tempol) and p38 inhibitor SB203580, and then treated with oxidized high-density lipoprotein. Finally, cell apoptosis, reactive oxygen species production and p38 signaling activity were detected. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: A portion of the high-density lipoprotein from the serum of polycystic ovary syndrome model rats affected oxidative modification. High-density lipoprotein and oxidized high-density lipoprotein isolated from the model rat serum inhibited granulosa cell viability and promoted apoptosis (all P < 0.05). They promoted rat granulosa cell reactive oxygen species production and p38 activation (all P < 0.05). N-acetylcysteine, Tempol and SB203580 reversed oxidized high-density lipoprotein induced granulosa cell apoptosis (all P < 0.05). N-acetylcysteine and Tempol suppressed oxidized high-density lipoprotein-induced p38 activation (all P < 0.05). SB203580 did not have a regulatory effect on reactive oxygen species production (P > 0.05). In summary, polycystic ovary syndrome can promote partial oxidative modification of high-density lipoprotein. The oxidized high-density lipoprotein promotes rat granulosa cell apoptosis by the activation of the reactive oxygen species-initiated p38 signaling pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Observational studies have found a correlation between the levels of blood lipids and the development and progression of endometriosis (EM). However, the causality and direction of this correlation is unclear. This study aimed to examine the bidirectional connection between lipid profiles and the risk of EM using publicly available genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics. Methods: Eligible exposure variables such as levels of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were selected using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis method following a series of quality control procedures. Data on EM were obtained from the publicly available Finnish database of European patients. Inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode methods were used to analyze the causal relationship between lipid exposure and EM, exclude confounders, perform sensitivity analyses, and assess the stability of the results. Reverse MR analyses were performed with EM as exposure and lipid results as study outcomes. Results: IVW analysis results identified HDL as a protective factor for EM, while TG was shown to be a risk factor for EM. Subgroup analyses based on the site of the EM lesion identified HDL as a protective factor for EM of the uterus, while TG was identified a risk factor for the EM of the fallopian tube, ovary, and pelvic peritoneum. Reverse analysis did not reveal any effect of EM on the levels of lipids. Conclusion: Blood lipids, such as HDL and TG, may play an important role in the development and progression of EM. Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder with rising incidence in Malaysia. The phenotype of PCOS is based on patients' clinical and biochemical characteristics. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the phenotype classification and the main risk factor for PCOS in women attending infertility treatment at the Subfertility Clinic, National Population and Family Development Board (NPFDB). Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among women undergoing infertility treatment at the Subfertility Clinic of NPFDB from January 2018 to December 2019. The women underwent physical examination, had their menstrual history recorded, and were diagnosed with PCOS based on Rotterdam criteria. Meanwhile, blood was taken for lipid, glucose and reproductive hormone analysis. Results: A total of 84 women who attended for infertility treatment were diagnosed with PCOS. The findings showed that the majority of PCOS women were diagnosed with PCOS phenotype D. PCOS women exhibited notable characteristics, including significantly increased body mass index (BMI), increased blood pressure, menstrual irregularities, polycystic ovaries and hirsutism. Elevated levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone were observed in PCOS women, while follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and progesterone levels were significantly diminished. Moreover, PCOS women manifested lower levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and increased 2-hour postprandial glucose levels compared to the control group. Interestingly, progesterone levels showed a statistically significant relationship with PCOS, whereby high progesterone levels decrease the risk of PCOS development (odds ratio [OR], 0.793; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.638-0.987, p<0.05). Conclusion: PCOS women who came for infertility treatment in Subfertility Clinic, NPFDB were predominantly phenotype D, had low progesterone levels and presented anovulation problems with polycystic ovaries, and these characteristics are risk factors for PCOS.
