With the IoT trend, wireless sensors are gaining growing interest. This is due to the possibility of installing them in locations inaccessible to wired sensors. Although great success has already been achieved in this area, energy limitation remains a major obstacle for further advances. As such, it is important to optimize sampling to a sufficient rate to catch important information without excessive energy consumption. One way to achieve sufficient sampling is by using an algorithm for adaptive sampling named dynamic sampling rate algorithm (DSRA); however, this algorithm requires an expert to set and tune its parameters, which might not always be readily available. This study aims to further develop this algorithm to be machine learning based to tune these parameters. To achieve this goal, the algorithm was modified and an optimization strategy that considers a predetermined error threshold was developed. Then the algorithm was implemented using simulated and real data with a set of predetermined errors thresholds to observe its performance. The results showed that the developed algorithm exhibited adaptive sampling behavior, and it could collect data efficiently depending on the predetermined error threshold. Based on the results, it is possible to conclude that the developed algorithm endows sensors with adaptive sampling capabilities based on the signal rate of change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The increasing microbial antibiotic resistance motivates research for non-antibiotic treatment alternatives. In recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), ‘bacterial interference’ has attracted interest as a possible alternative treatment option. The observation that asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) protects against recurrent UTI has prompted clinical trials with deliberate colonization of the human urinary tract as an alternative approach in patients with recurrent UTI. The strain used for colonization, the ABU isolate Escherichia coli 83972, has been shown to cause symptom-free colonizations for long periods of time. Patients on long-term colonization report a subjective benefit, and UTI treatments are rare in colonized patients. Abstract: Boring bars are frequently used in the manufacturing industry to turn deep cavities in workpieces and are usually associated with vibration problems. This paper focuses on the clamping properties’ influence on the dynamic properties of clamped boring bars. A standard clamping housing of the variety commonly used in industry today has been used. Both a standard boring bar and a modified boring bar have been considered. Two methods have been used: Euler–Bernoulli beam modeling and experimental modal analysis. It is demonstrated that the number of clamping screws, the clamping screw diameter sizes, the screw tightening torques, the order the screws are tightened has a significant influence on a clamped boring bars eigenfrequencies and its mode shapes orientation in the cutting speed—cutting depth plane. Also, the damping of the modes is influenced. The results indicate that multi-span Euler–Bernoulli beam models with pinned boundary condition or elastic boundary condition modeling the clamping are preferable as compared to a fixed-free Euler–Bernoulli beam for modeling dynamic properties of a clamped boring bar. It is also demonstrated that a standard clamping housing clamping a boring bar with clamping screws imposes non-linear dynamic boring bar behavior. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study compared the relative efficacy of a therapist-assisted relaxation treatment programme with a self-help approach and a self-monitoring condition in the treatment of chronic headaches in adolescents within a school setting. The subjects were 46 high school students, 16-18 years of age, who were randomly assigned to the three treatment conditions. The results indicated that the sell-help approach was as effective as the therapist-assisted relaxation condition in reducing the students' headache, and that these findings were maintained at a 5-month follow-up evaluation.
