Because Africa and colonialism occupy center stage in modern Portuguese history, writers working after the end of the dictatorship in 1974 dealt extensively with the colonial wars that began in 1961. Novels since the 1990's have focused on the worldview and identity of the colonizers, the issue of identifying with Africa, and the legacy of the colonial presence. The article discusses four contemporary novels: Miguel Sousa Tavares's 'Equador' (2003), Maria Isabel Barreno's 'O Senhor das Ilhas' (1994), António Lobo Antunes's 'O Esplendor de Portugal' (1997), and Eduardo Bettencourt Pinto's 'A Casa das Rugas' (2004).
