Gold nanocrystals (NCs) have drawn tremendous interest in the scientific community due to their unique ability to interact with light. When irradiated with ultrafast pulsed lasers, the lattice temperature of gold NCs can rapidly increase, even above the melting and evaporation thresholds, which results in strong morphological, structural, and aggregation state modifications. Thereby, ultrafast pulsed laser irradiation can lead to the formation of metastable gold nanostructures with distinctive physicochemical features. In this Perspective, we discuss the implementation of femtosecond and nanosecond pulsed lasers to engineer gold NCs. We underline the importance of controlling the heating and cooling dynamics to achieve desired reshaping and restructuring of gold NCs at temperatures below and above its melting point. In addition, we demonstrate the need for advanced electron microscopy characterization techniques and single-particle studies to understand the detailed atomistic mechanisms behind the modifications following pulsed laser irradiation. Finally, we provide our views of the evolving opportunities of ultrafast laser irradiation as a unique tool for the fabrication of unprecedented nanomaterials and catalysts from metal and multimetal NCs to semiconductors. Das Wachstum von kristallinen Nanopartikeln (NP) umfasst im Allgemeinen drei Prozesse: Keimbildung, Wachstum und die Entwicklung der Form. Von diesen Prozessen ist die Formentwicklung trotz der Bedeutung der Morphologie für die Eigenschaften der NP am wenigsten verstanden. Hier beschreiben wir eine symmetriebasierte kinematische Theorie (SBKT) die auf klassischen Wachstumstheorien basiert, um den Prozess zu veranschaulichen. Auf Grundlage des Kristallgitters, der Keim‐ (oder Kern‐) Symmetrie und der bevorzugten Wachstumsrichtungen unter den experimentellen Bedingungen kann die SBKT die Wachstumstrajektorien veranschaulichen. Die Theorie erfüllt die konventionellen Kriterien der wichtigsten bestehenden Theorien für das Kristallwachstum und bietet Werkzeuge zum besseren Verständnis des Symmetriebrechens während des Wachstums anisotroper Strukturen. Darüber hinaus wird das komplexe dendritische Wachstum sowohl theoretisch als auch experimentell nachgewiesen. The growth of crystalline nanoparticles (NPs) generally involves three processes: nucleation, growth, and shape evolution. Among them, the shape evolution is less understood, despite the importance of morphology for NP properties. Here, we propose a symmetry‐based kinematic theory (SBKT) based on classical growth theories to illustrate the process. Based on the crystal lattice, nucleus (or seed) symmetry, and the preferential growth directions under the experimental conditions, the SBKT can illustrate the growth trajectories. The theory accommodates the conventional criteria of the major existing theories for crystal growth and provides tools to better understand the symmetry‐breaking process during the growth of anisotropic structures. Furthermore, complex dendritic growth is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. Bimetallic nanoparticles display unique physical and chemical properties, including improved chemical stability, enhanced optical properties, or higher catalytic activity. Here, a synthetic methodology is described to obtain bimetallic heterostructures and alloyed plasmonic nanocrystals through the irradiation of colloidal Au@Ag core–shell nanorods (Au@Ag NRs) with femtosecond laser pulses. Depending on the energy deposited on the Au@Ag NRs, different morphologies and degrees of alloying are obtained, such as hot‐dog‐like and rice‐like (partially alloyed) NRs, as well as fully alloyed nanospheres. By using advanced electron microscopy techniques and energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDX) tomography, both the morphology and the elemental distribution of the irradiated nanoparticles can be disclosed, and correlated to detailed investigations of their optical properties using electromagnetic simulations. The wide variety of bimetallic species provided by the proposed approach is a clear indication of the potential of combining synthetic colloidal methods with fs‐pulsed laser irradiation for the fabrication of unique multielemental nanoparticles. The citrate-assisted growth of nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) nanocubes was investigated. Control over the complexation of Ni2+ ions with citrate at different temperatures enabled fine tuning of the nanocrystal (NC) dimensions and their self-assembly into mesocrystals. Self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) doped with anisotropic gold nanorods (AuNRs) was studied by small-angle neutron scattering. Correlation distances and structured domains were analysed to determine the influence of CNC and AuNR concentration on structuring. The transfer of the nematic structure of CNCs to AuNRs is explained in terms of an entropy-driven evolution from an isotropic to a cholesteric phase, with small nematic domains already present in the "isotropic" phase in equilibrium with the chiral nematic phase. Surfactant-assisted seeded growth of metal nanoparticles (NPs) can be engineered to produce anisotropic gold nanocrystals with high chiroptical activity through the templating effect of chiral micelles formed in the presence of dissymmetric cosurfactants. Mixed micelles adsorb on gold nanorods, forming quasihelical patterns that direct seeded growth into NPs with pronounced morphological and optical handedness. Sharp chiral wrinkles lead to chiral plasmon modes with high dissymmetry factors (~0.20). Through variation of the dimensions of chiral wrinkles, the chiroptical properties can be tuned within the visible and near-infrared electromagnetic spectrum. The micelle-directed mechanism allows extension to other systems, such as the seeded growth of chiral platinum shells on gold nanorods. We report an efficient, seed‐mediated method for the synthesis of gold nanotriangles (NTs) which can be used for controlled self‐assembly. The main advantage of the proposed synthetic protocol is that it relies on using stable (over the course of several days) intermediate seeds. This stability translates into increasing time efficiency of the synthesis and makes the protocol experimentally less demanding ('fast addition' not required, tap water can be used in the final steps) as compared to previously reported procedures, without compromising the size and shape monodispersity of the product. We demonstrate high reproducibility of the protocol in the hands of different researchers and in different laboratories. Additionally, this modified seed‐mediated method can be used to produce NTs with edge lengths between ca. 45 and 150 nm. Finally, the high 'quality' of NTs allows the preparation of long‐range ordered assemblies with vertically oriented building blocks, which makes them promising candidates for future optoelectronic technologies. The irradiation of gold nanorod colloids with a femtosecond laser can be tuned to induce controlled nanorod reshaping, yielding colloids with exceptionally narrow localized surface plasmon resonance bands. The process relies on a regime characterized by a gentle multishot reduction of the aspect ratio, whereas the rod shape and volume are barely affected. Successful reshaping can only occur within a narrow window of the heat dissipation rate: Low cooling rates lead to drastic morphological changes, and fast cooling has nearly no effect. Hence, a delicate balance must be achieved between irradiation fluence and surface density of the surfactant on the nanorods. This perfection process is appealing because it provides a simple, fast, reproducible, and scalable route toward gold nanorods with an optical response of exceptional quality, near the theoretical limit. Oxidative etching was used to produce gold seeds of different sizes and crystal habits. Following detailed characterization, the seeds were grown under different conditions. Understanding protein amyloidogenesis is an important topic in protein science, fueled by the role of amyloid aggregates, especially oligomers, in the etiology of a number of devastating human degenerative diseases. However, the mechanisms that determine the formation of amyloid oligomers remain elusive due to the high complexity of the amyloidogenesis process. We have functionalized gold nanorods with a metal-chelating group to selectively immobilize soluble RepA-WH1, a model synthetic bacterial prionoid, using a hexa-histidine tag (H6). H6-RepA-WH1 undergoes stable amyloid oligomerization in the presence of catalytic concentrations of anisotropic nanoparticles. Then, in a physically separated event, such oligomers promote the growth of amyloid fibers of untagged RepA-WH1. SERS spectral changes of H6-RepA-WH1 on spherical citrate-AuNP substrates provide evidence for structural modifications in the protein, which are compatible with a gradual increase in β-sheet structure, as expected in amyloid oligomerization. The vast majority of the outstanding applications of metal nanoparticles (NPs) developed during the last two decades have arisen from their unique optical properties. Within this context, rational synthesis and assembly of gold NPs have been the main research focus, aiming at the design of nanoplasmonic devices with tailored optical functionalities. The progress made in this field is thus to be ascribed to the understanding of the origin of the interaction between light and such gold nanostructures, the dynamics of which have been thoroughly investigated with significant contributions from short and ultrashort pulse laser technologies We focus this Account on the potential of pulse lasers to provide new fundamental insights into the electron dynamics involved in the interaction of light with the free conduction electrons of Au NPs, that is, localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs). The excitation of LSPRs with a femtosecond pulse laser is followed by thermalization of the Au NP electrons and the subsequent relaxation of the nanocrystal lattice and the surrounding environment, which generally results in surface melting. By contrast, nanosecond irradiation usually induces AuNP fragmentation and uncontrolled melting due to overlapping excitation and relaxation phenomena. These concepts have been exploited toward the preparation of highly monodisperse gold nanospheres via pulse laser irradiation of polyhedral nanocrystal colloids, or in the fabrication of nanostructures with "written-in" optical properties. The applicability of pulsed coherent light has been extended toward the direct synthesis and manipulation of Au NPs. Through ablation of a gold target in a liquid with pulse lasers, spherical Au NPs can be synthesized with no need of stabilizing ligands, which is a great advantage in terms of reducing toxicity, rendering these NPs particularly suitable for medical applications. In addition, femtosecond laser irradiation has been proven a unique tool for the controlled welding of plasmonic gold nanostructures by electromagnetic field enhancement at the hot spots of assembled Au NPs. The combination of such nanostructures with pulse lasers promises significant chemical and biochemical advances, including the structural determination of organic reaction intermediates, the investigation of phase transitions in inorganic nanomaterials at mild reaction conditions, or the efficient photothermal destruction of cancer cells avoiding damage of surrounding tissue. Directed assembly of gold nanorods through the use of dithiolated molecular linkers is one of the most efficient methodologies for the morphologically controlled tip-to-tip assembly of this type of anisotropic nanocrystals. However, in a direct analogy to molecular polymerization synthesis, this process is characterized by difficulties in chain-growth control over nanoparticle oligomers. In particular, it is nearly impossible to favor the formation of one type of oligomer, making the methodology hard to use for actual applications in nanoplasmonics. We propose here a light-controlled synthetic procedure that allows obtaining selected plasmonic oligomers in high yield and with reaction times in the scale of minutes by irradiation with low fluence near-infrared (NIR) femtosecond laser pulses. Selective inhibition of the formation of gold nanorod n-mers (trimers) with a longitudinal localized surface plasmon in resonance with a 800 nm Ti:sapphire laser, allowed efficient trapping of the (n - 1)-mers (dimers) by hot spot mediated photothermal decomposition of the interparticle molecular linkers. Laser irradiation at higher energies produced near-field enhancement at the interparticle gaps, which is large enough to melt gold nanorod tips, offering a new pathway toward tip-to-tip welding of gold nanorod oligomers with a plasmonic response at the NIR. Thorough optical and electron microscopy characterization indicates that plasmonic oligomers can be selectively trapped and welded, which has been analyzed in terms of a model that predicts with reasonable accuracy the relative concentrations of the main plasmonic species. Analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) is a powerful technique to observe colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) directly in solution and obtain critical information about their physical-chemical properties. Nevertheless, a more comprehensive implementation of AUC for the characterisation of such a class of crystalline colloids has been traditionally impaired by the requirement of having a priori knowledge of the complex, multilayered structure formed by NC in solution. This includes the nature (density and mass) of the surface ligands (SLs) that provide NC colloidal stability and the shell of solvent molecules formed on it. Herein, we propose a methodology to determine the NCs size by using SLs with a density equal to that of the solvent. Thereby, the buoyancy force of the SL shell is neutral, and the density of the NCs is sufficient a priori knowledge to calculate their related mass and size distributions. The simplicity and reliability of the method are evaluated with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) stabilized spherical gold NCs (AuNCs) of dimensions ranging from 1 to 17 nm. The proposed method has great potential to be transferred to any non-crystalline and crystalline colloids of different nature and composition, which have a density that is equal to the bulk and can be stabilized by SLs having a density that matches that of the solvent. Colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted significant attention due to their unique physicochemical properties suitable for diagnosing and treating different human diseases. Nevertheless, the successful implementation of NPs in medicine demands a proper understanding of their interactions with the different proteins found in biological fluids. Once introduced into the body, NPs are covered by a protein corona (PC) that determines the biological behavior of the NPs. The formation of the PC can eventually favor the rapid clearance of the NPs from the body before fulfilling the desired objective or lead to increased cytotoxicity. The PC nature varies as a function of the different repulsive and attractive forces that govern the NP-protein interaction and their colloidal stability. This review focuses on the phenomenon of PC formation on NPs from a physicochemical perspective, aiming to provide a general overview of this critical process. Main issues related to NP toxicity and clearance from the body as a result of protein adsorption are covered, including the most promising strategies to control PC formation and, thereby, ensure the successful application of NPs in nanomedicine. In this work, we investigated experimentally and theoretically the plasmonic Fano resonances (FRs) exhibited by core–shell nanorods composed of a gold core and a silver shell (Au@Ag NRs). The colloidal synthesis of these Au@Ag NRs produces nanostructures with rich plasmonic features, of which two different FRs are particularly interesting. The FR with spectral location at higher energies (3.7 eV) originates from the interaction between a plasmonic mode of the nanoparticle and the interband transitions of Au. In contrast, the tunable FR at lower energies (2.92–2.75 eV) is ascribed to the interaction between the dominant transversal LSPR mode of the Ag shell and the transversal plasmon mode of the Au@Ag nanostructure. The unique symmetrical morphology and FRs of these Au@Ag NRs make them promising candidates for plasmonic sensors and metamaterials components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A synthesized thiol-functionalized non-ionic surfactant based on the IGEPAL® (polyoxyethylene(5) nonyl phenyl ether) structure, has been used to replace citrate ions from the surface of gold nanoparticles with 13.5 nm diameters. Upon IGEPAL®-type stabilization in water, the nanoparticles were transferred to ethanol, where a layer of silica was efficiently grown on the nanocrystal surface through the conventional Stöber approach. This method allows fine control over the silica thickness, showing uniform and homogeneous core-shell nanoparticles. Additionally, the luminescent properties of the IGEPAL® surfactant allow the versatile preparation of robust fluorescent nanoparticles with multiplexing potential as simultaneous plasmonic and fluorescence probes. Liquid crystalline (LC) dimers formed helical nanofilaments depending on the parity of the alkyl linker, revealing an unusual odd–even effect. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the observed tendency. Elongation of the linker translates to an increase of the pitch of the helices, which allows achieving tuneable helical assemblies of Au nanoparticles doped to the LC matrix. The combination of cell microenvironment control and real-time monitoring of cell signaling events can provide key biological information. Through precise multipatterning of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) around cells, sensing and actuating elements can be introduced in the cells' microenviroment, providing a powerful substrate for cell studies. In this work, a combination of techniques are implemented to engineer complex substrates for cell studies. Alternating GNPs and bioactive areas are created with micrometer separation by means of a combination of vacumm soft-lithography of GNPs and protein microcontract printing. Instead of conventional microfluidics that need syringe pumps to flow liquid in the microchannels, degas driven flow is used to fill dead-end channels with GNP solutions, rendering the fabrication process straightforward and accessible. This new combined technique is called Printing and Vacuum lithography (PnV lithography). By using different GNPs with various organic coating ligands, different macroscale patterns are obtained, such as wires, supercrystals, and uniformly spread nanoparticle layers that can find different applications depending on the need of the user. The application of the system is tested to pattern a range of mammalian cell lines and obtain readouts on cell viability, cell morphology, and the presence of cell adhesive proteins. Efficient plasmonic photothermal therapies (PPTTs) using non-harmful pulse laser irradiation at the near-infrared (NIR) are a highly sought goal in nanomedicine. These therapies rely on the use of plasmonic nanostructures to kill cancer cells while minimizing the applied laser power density. Cancer cells have an unsettled capacity to uptake, retain, release, and re-uptake gold nanoparticles, thus offering enormous versatility for research. In this work, we have studied such cell capabilities for nanoparticle trafficking and its impact on the effect of photothermal treatments. As our model system, we chose uveal (eye) melanoma cells, since laser-assisted eye surgery is routinely used to treat glaucoma and cataracts, or vision correction in refractive surgery. As nanostructure, we selected gold nanostars (Au NSs) due to their high photothermal efficiency at the near-infrared (NIR) region of the electromagnetic spectrum. We first investigated the photothermal effect on the basis of the dilution of Au NSs induced by cell division. Using this approach, we obtained high PPTT efficiency after several cell division cycles at an initial low Au NS concentration (pM regime). Subsequently, we evaluated the photothermal effect on account of cell division upon mixing Au NS-loaded and non-loaded cells. Upon such mixing, we observed trafficking of Au NSs between loaded and non-loaded cells, thus achieving effective PPTT after several division cycles under low irradiation conditions (below the maximum permissible exposure threshold of skin). Our study reveals the ability of uveal melanoma cells to release and re-uptake Au NSs that maintain their plasmonic photothermal properties throughout several cell division cycles and re-uptake. This approach may be readily extrapolated to real tissue and even to treat in situ the eye tumor itself. We believe that our method can potentially be used as co-therapy to disperse plasmonic gold nanostructures across affected tissues, thus increasing the effectiveness of classic PPTT. One of the most important and distinctive features of plasmonic nanostructures is their ability to confine large electromagnetic fields on nanometric volumes; i.e., the so-called hot spots. The generation, control and characterization of the hot spots are fundamental for several applications, like surface-enhanced spectroscopies. In this work, we characterize the near-field distribution and enhancement of nanostructured gold thin films fabricated by glancing angle deposition magnetron sputtering. These films are composed of columnar nanostructures with high roughness and high density of inter-columnar gaps, where the electromagnetic radiation can be confined, generating hot spots. As expected, the hot spots are localized in the gaps between adjacent nanocolumns and we use scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy to image their distribution over the surface of the samples. The experimental results are compared with finite-difference time-domain simulations, finding an excellent agreement between them. The spectral dependence of the field-enhancement is also studied with the simulations, together with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy at different excitation wavelengths in the visible-NIR range, proving a broad-band response of the substrates.
